1. Enhanced performance of planar perovskite solar cells by doping the SnO2 electron transport layer with guanidinium chloride

Abstract: Tin (IV) oxide is a highly promising electron transport layer (ETL) for lead halide perovskite solar cells due to its high conductivity, transparency, wide band gap, and the possibility of low-temperature processing. Nonetheless, charge carrier recombination processes at the SnO2/perovskite interface diminish the device performance. Here, we demonstrate that SnO2 doping with guanidine hydrochloride (G-SnO2) leads to efficient surface passivation and a larger band offset between the ETL and the perovskite layer, resulting in reduced voltage losses and faster electron transfer. Moreover, G-SnO2 facilitates the growth of highly crystalline perovskite layers. Consequently, a power conversion efficiency of up to 23.48% and a high open-circuit voltage of 1.18 V are obtained in solar cells incorporating the G-SnO2 ETL. These devices also exhibited negligible hysteresis and maintained more than 96% of their initial power conversion efficiency after 1,250 h exposure to the air without encapsulation.

2. Practice of electron microscopy on nanoparticles sensitive to radiation damage: CsPbBr3 nanocrystals as a case study

Abstract: In-depth and reliable characterization of advanced nanoparticles is crucial for revealing the origin of their unique features and for designing novel functional materials with tailored properties. Due to their small size, characterization beyond nanometric resolution, notably, by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and associated techniques, is essential to provide meaningful information. Nevertheless, nanoparticles, especially those containing volatile elements or organic components, are sensitive to radiation damage. Here, using CsPbBr3 perovskite nanocrystals as an example, strategies to preserve the native structure of radiation-sensitive nanocrystals in high-resolution electron microscopy studies are presented. Atomic-resolution images obtained using graphene support films allow for a clear comparison with simulation results, showing that most CsPbBr3 nanocrystals are orthorhombic. Low-dose TEM reveals faceted nanocrystals with no in situ formed Pb crystallites, a feature observed in previous TEM studies that has been attributed to radiation damage. Cryo-electron microscopy further delays observable effects of radiation damage. Powder electron diffraction with a hybrid pixel direct electron detector confirms the domination of orthorhombic crystals. These results emphasize the importance of optimizing TEM grid preparation and of exploiting data collection strategies that impart minimum electron dose for revealing the true structure of radiation-sensitive nanocrystals.

3. Analysis of the Calcium Phosphate-Based Hybrid Layer Formed on a Ti-6Al-7Nb Alloy to Enhance the Ossseointegration Process

Abstract: This paper reports on hybrid, bioactive ceramic Ca-P-based coating formation on a Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy substrate to enhance the osseointegration process. The Ti alloy was anodized in a Ca3(PO4)2 suspension and then the additional layer was formed by the sol-gel technique to obtain a mixture of the calcium phosphate compounds. The oxide layer was porous and additional ceramic particles were formed after sol-gel treatment (scanning electron microscopy analysis coupled with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy). The ceramic particles were formed on some parts of the oxide layer and did not completely fill the pores. The layer thickness of the anodized Ti alloy was comprised between 3.01 and 5.03 µm and increased to 7.52–12.30 µm after the formation of an additional layer. Post-treatment of the anodized Ti alloys caused a decrease in surface roughness, and the layer became strongly hydrophilic. Crystalline phase analysis (X-ray diffraction, XRD) showed that the hybrid layer was composed of TiO2 (anatase), Ca3(PO4)2, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 and a partially amorphous phase; thus, the layer was also analyzed by Raman spectroscopy. The hybrid layer showed worse adhesion to the substrate than the anodized layer only; however, the coating was not brittle, and the first delamination of the layer was determined at 1.84 ± 0.11 N during scratch-test measurement. The hybrid coating was favorable for collagen type I and lactoferrin adsorption, strongly influencing the proliferation of osteoblast-like MG-63 cells. The coatings were cytocompatible and may find applications in formation of the functional layers on long-term implants’ surface after.

4. High-quality NbN nanofilms on a GaN/AlN heterostructure

Abstract: We demonstrate high-quality monocrystalline NbN films deposited by DC magnetron sputtering on a GaN/AlN waveguiding heterostructure. NbN layers with a thickness of 8 nm are grown along the [111] direction, and show two orientation domains with NbN(111) [2-1-1]//AlN (0001) [10-10] and NbN(111) [2-1-1]//AlN(0001) [01-10] epitaxial relationships. Our NbN films display a critical temperature of 13.2 K, with the superconducting transition taking place in a temperature range of only 0.7 K.

Abstract: International audience; Germanium is a promising active material for high energy density anodes in Li-ion batteries thanks to its good Li-ion conduction and mechanical properties. However, a deep understanding of the (de)lithiation mechanism of Ge requires advanced characterizations to correlate structural and chemical evolution during charge and discharge. Here we report a combined operando X-ray diffraction (XRD) and ex situ 7Li solid-state NMR investigation performed on crystalline germanium nanoparticles (c-Ge Nps) based anodes during partial and complete cycling at C/10 versus Li metal. High-resolution XRD data, acquired along three successive partial cycles, revealed the formation process of crystalline core–amorphous shell particles and their associated strain behavior, demonstrating the reversibility of the c-Ge lattice strain, unlike what is observed in the crystalline silicon nanoparticles. Moreover, the crystalline and amorphous lithiated phases formed during a complete lithiation cycle are identified. Amorphous Li7Ge3 and Li7Ge2 are formed successively, followed by the appearance of crystalline Li15Ge4 (c-Li15Ge4) at the end of lithiation. These results highlight the enhanced mechanical properties of germanium compared to silicon, which can mitigate pulverization and increase structural stability, in the perspective for developing high-performance anodes.

Abstract: International audience; Nickel oxide (NiOx) is an emerging hole transport layer (HTL) material in halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs), combining high hole mobility, transparency, and stability. Current limitations of the device performance are mainly related to the inefficient hole extraction caused by contact problems between NiOx and the perovskite layer. Based on its expected strong interaction with both the NiOx surface and the perovskite layer, we selected 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) as a molecular passivation agent for the HTL. Photoelectron spectroscopy and photophysical studies demonstrate that DMAP passivation creates a more favorable band alignment at the NiOx/perovskite interface. This leads to decreased carrier recombination near the interface and enhanced hole transfer. In addition, X-ray diffraction reveals reduced strain, improved crystalline quality, and a redistribution of excess PbI2 in perovskite layers grown on DMAP-passivated NiOx. As a consequence, PSCs with the DMAP-modified HTL exhibit a strongly increased fill factor and power conversion efficiency with values close to 80 and 18%, respectively. Moreover, they show negligible hysteresis and enhanced environmental stability compared to devices with untreated HTLs.

Abstract: The diffusional behaviour of H2 adsorbed in a novel mesoporous N-doped carbon material and on exfoliated graphite has been studied with quasi-elastic neutron scattering. While the activation energies for diffusion obtained for exfoliated graphite was in line with prior results, H2 in the mesoporous carbon showed an exceptionally low diffusion barrier and behaved qualitatively like liquid hydrogen. Complementary results from neutron and X-ray diffraction as well as from isothermal nitrogen sorption studies provide a full characterisation of this novel mesoporous carbon.

10. Water content control during solution-based polymerization: a key to reach extremely high conductivity in PEDOT thin films

Abstract: Conductive polymers are a very promising alternative for the fabrication of transparent conductive materials. They have many advantages compared to existing materials, like a low-cost and a high flexibility. However, electrical conductivity still needs to be improved. We report a straightforward solution-based approach for the fabrication of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) thin films with conductivity as high as 6046 ± 510 S cm−1, based on accurate water content control during the polymerization step. The crystallinity improvement is evidenced by GIWAXS characterization, and low temperature electrical conductivity measurements give new insights on the transport mechanisms at stake. This very high conductivity is, to our knowledge, the highest reported value for solution-based synthesis of PEDOT based materials.

Abstract: International audience; The (de)lithiation process and resulting atomic and nanoscale morphological changes of an a-Si/c-FeSi2/graphite composite negative electrode are investigated within a Li-ion full cell at several current rates (C-rates) and after prolonged cycling by simultaneous operando synchrotron wide-angle and small-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS and SAXS). WAXS allows the probing of the local crystalline structure. In particular, the observation of the graphite (de)lithiation process, revealed by the LixC6 Bragg reflections, enables access to the respective capacities of both graphite and active silicon. Simultaneously and independently, information on the silicon state of (de)lithiation and nanoscale morphology (1 to 60 nm) is obtained through SAXS. During lithiation, the SAXS intensity in the region corresponding to characteristic distances within the a-Si/c-FeSi2 domains increases. The combination of the SAXS/WAXS measurements over the course of several charge/discharge cycles, in pristine and aged electrodes, provides a complete picture of the C-rate-dependent sequential (de)lithiation mechanism of the a-Si/c-FeSi2/graphite anode. Our results indicate that, within the composite electrode, the active silicon volume does not increase linearly with lithium insertion and point toward the important role of the electrode morphology to accommodate the nanoscale silicon expansion, an effect that remains beneficial after cell aging and most probably explains the excellent performance of the composite material.

Abstract: We recently presented the elaboration and functional properties of a new generation of hybrid membranes for PEMFC applications showing promising performances and durability. The strategy was to form, inside a commercial sPEEK membrane, via in situ sol–gel (SG) synthesis, a reactive SG phase able to reduce oxidative species generated during FC operation. In order to understand structure-properties interplay, we use a combination of direct space (AFM/3D FIB-SEM) and reciprocal space (SANS/WAXS) techniques to cover dimensional scales ranging from a hundred to few nanometers. AFM modulus images showed the SG phase distributed into spherical domains whose size increases with the SG uptake (ca. 100–200 nm range). Using contrast variation SANS, we observed that the sPEEK nanostructure is mostly unaffected by the insertion of the SG phase which presents a fractal-like multiscale structure. Additionally, the size of both the particles (aggregates/primary) is much too large to be sequestered in the ionic pathways of sPEEK. These findings indicate that the SG-NPs mainly grow within the amorphous interbundle domains. Noticeable rightward shift and widening of the ionomer peak are observed with the SG content, suggesting ion channel compression and greater heterogeneity of the ionic domain size. The SG phase develops in the interbundle regions with a limited impact on the water uptake but leading to a discontinuity of ionic conductivity. This Fourier and real spaces study clarifies the structure of the hybrid membranes and brings into the question the ideal distribution/localization of the SG phase to optimize the membrane's stabilization.

Abstract: International audience; Tin oxide (SnO2) is an emerging electron transport layer (ETL) material in halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Among current limitations, open-circuit voltage (VOC) loss is one of the major factors to be addressed for further improvement. Here a bilayer ETL consisting of two SnO2 nanoparticle layers doped with different amounts of ammonium chloride is proposed. As demonstrated by photoelectron spectroscopy and photophysical studies, the main effect of the novel ETL is to modify the energy level alignment at the SnO2/perovskite interface, which leads to decreased carrier recombination, enhanced electron transfer, and reduced voltage loss. Moreover, X-ray diffraction reveals reduced strain in perovskite layers grown on bilayer ETLs with respect to single-layer ETLs, further contributing to a decrease of carrier recombination processes. Finally, the bilayer approach enables the more reproducible preparation of smooth and pinhole-free ETLs as compared to single-step deposition ETLs. PSCs with the doped bilayer SnO2 ETL demonstrate strongly increased VOC values of up to 1.21 V with a power conversion efficiency of 21.75% while showing negligible hysteresis and enhanced stability. Moreover, the SnO2 bilayer can be processed at low temperature (70 °C), and has therefore a high potential for use in tandem devices or flexible PSCs.

Abstract: This paper reports on hybrid, bioactive ceramic Ca-P-based coating formation on a Ti-6Al-7Nb alloy substrate to enhance the osseointegration process. The Ti alloy was anodized in a Ca3(PO4)2 suspension and then the additional layer was formed by the sol-gel technique to obtain a mixture of the calcium phosphate compounds. The oxide layer was porous and additional ceramic particles were formed after sol-gel treatment (scanning electron microscopy analysis coupled with energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy). The ceramic particles were formed on some parts of the oxide layer and did not completely fill the pores. The layer thickness of the anodized Ti alloy was comprised between 3.01 and 5.03 &micro, m and increased to 7.52&ndash, 12.30 &micro, m after the formation of an additional layer. Post-treatment of the anodized Ti alloys caused a decrease in surface roughness, and the layer became strongly hydrophilic. Crystalline phase analysis (X-ray diffraction, XRD) showed that the hybrid layer was composed of TiO2 (anatase), Ca3(PO4)2, Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2 and a partially amorphous phase, thus, the layer was also analyzed by Raman spectroscopy. The hybrid layer showed worse adhesion to the substrate than the anodized layer only, however, the coating was not brittle, and the first delamination of the layer was determined at 1.84 &plusmn, 0.11 N during scratch-test measurement. The hybrid coating was favorable for collagen type I and lactoferrin adsorption, strongly influencing the proliferation of osteoblast-like MG-63 cells. The coatings were cytocompatible and may find applications in formation of the functional layers on long-term implants&rsquo, surface after.

Abstract: Eu$^{2+}$ is used to replace toxic Pb$^{2+}$ in metal halide perovskite nanocrystals (NCs). The synthesis implies injection of cesium oleate into a solution of europium (II) bromide at an experimentally determined optimum temperature of 130C and a reaction time of 60s. Structural analysis indicates the formation of spherical CsEuBr$_3$ nanoparticles with a mean size of 43nm. Using EuI$_2$ instead of EuBr$_2$ leads to the formation of 18nm CsI nanoparticles, while EuCl$_2$ does not show any reaction with cesium oleate forming 80nm EuCl2 nanoparticles. The obtained CsEuBr3 NCs exhibit bright blue emission at 413nm (FWHM 30 nm) with a room temperature photoluminescence quantum yield of 39%. The emission originates from the Laporte-allowed 4f7-4f65d1 transition of Eu$^{2+}$ and shows a PL decay time of 263ns. The long-term stability of the optical properties is observed, making inorganic lead-free CsEuBr$_3$ NCs promising deep blue emitters for optoelectronics., The Journal of Chemical Physics (2019)

Abstract: Organic conducting polymers are promising materials for thermoelectric applications due to their high electrical conductivity and intrinsic low thermal conductivity. Among them, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) has a positive Seebeck coefficient (p-type) and is commercially available. It has therefore gained a lot of attention in the field. However, it remains challenging to process a large amount of organic thermocouples to produce an efficient thermoelectric generator (TEG). In addition, finding a way to use bidimensional (2D) printed thermocouples in a tridimensional (3D) TEG structure is not straightforward. In this article, we propose the use of ultrasonic spray-coating as a straightforward large-scale printing technique to prepare highly conducting and in situ polymerized PEDOT:OTf. The spray-coated material can reach an electrical conductivity as high as 2215 ± 665 S cm−1 at 132 ± 10 nm film thickness. We studied the influence of several parameters, such as co-solvent addition, thickness control and rinsing procedure on the conduction properties. GIWAXS and low temperature electrical conductivity measurements on films of different thicknesses allowed us to elucidate the structures of the as-prepared materials and the charge transport mechanisms. Finally, a fully printed and rolled TEG containing 156 thermocouples was prepared as a proof of concept, generating a power output of 1 μW with a 48 °C thermal gradient.

19. Impact of Morphology on Charge Carrier Transport and Thermoelectric Properties of N‐Type FBDOPV‐Based Polymers

Abstract: International audience; The impact of the chemical structure and molecular order on the charge transport properties of two donor–acceptor copolymers in their neutral anddoped states is investigated. Both polymers comprise 3,7-bis((E)-7-fluoro-1-(2-octyl-dodecyl)-2-oxoindolin-3-ylidene)-3,7-dihydrobenzo[1,2-b:4,5-b′]difuran-2,6-dione (FBDOPV) as electron-accepting unit, copolymerized with 9,9-dioctyl-fluorene (P(FBDOPV-F)) or with 3-dodecyl-2,2′-bithiophene(P(FBDOPV-2T-C12)). These copolymers possess an amorphous and semicrystalline nature, respectively, and exhibit remarkable electron mobilities of 0.065 and 0.25 cm2 V–1 s–1 in field effect transistors. However, after chemical n-doping with 4-(1,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-benzoimidazol-2-yl)phenyl) dimethylamine (N-DMBI), electrical conductivities four orders of magnitude higher can be achieved for P(FBDOPV-2T-C12) (σ = 0.042 S cm−1). More charge-transfer complexes are formed between P(FBDOPV-F) and N-DMBI, but the highly localized polaronic states poorly contribute to the charge transport. Doped P(FBDOPV-2T-C12) exhibits a negative Seebeck coefficient of –265 μV K−1 and a thermoelectric power factor (PF) of 0.30 μW m−1 K−2 at 303 K which increases to 0.72 μW m−1 K−2 at 388 K. The in-plane thermal conductivity (κ|| = 0.53 W m−1 K−1) on the same micrometer-thick solution-processed film is measured, resulting in a figure of merit (ZT) of 5.0 × 10−4 at 388 K. The results provide important design guidelines to improve the doping efficiency and thermoelectric properties of n-type organic semiconductors.

Abstract: International audience; Failure mechanisms associated with silicon‐based anodes are limiting the implementation of high‐capacity lithium‐ion batteries. Understanding the aging mechanism that deteriorates the anode performance and introducing novel‐architectured composites offer new possibilities for improving the functionality of the electrodes. Here, the characterization of nano‐architectured composite anode composed of active amorphous silicon domains (a‐Si, 20 nm) and crystalline iron disilicide (c‐FeSi2, 5–15 nm) alloyed particles dispersed in a graphite matrix is reported. This unique hierarchical architecture yields long‐term mechanical, structural, and cycling stability. Using advanced electron microscopy techniques, the nanoscale morphology and chemical evolution of the active particles upon lithiation/delithiation are investigated. Due to the volumetric variations of Si during lithiation/delithiation, the morphology of the a‐Si/c‐FeSi2 alloy evolves from a core‐shell to a tree‐branch type structure, wherein the continuous network of the active a‐Si remains intact yielding capacity retention of 70% after 700 cycles. The root cause of electrode polarization, initial capacity fading, and electrode swelling is discussed and has profound implications for the development of stable lithium‐ion batteries.

Abstract: Advanced anode material designs utilizing dual phase alloy systems like Si/FeSi2 nano-composites show great potential to decrease the capacity degrading and improve the cycling capability for Lithium (Li)-ion batteries. Here, we present a multi-scale characterization approach to understand the (de-)lithiation and irreversible volumetric changes of the amorphous silicon (a-Si)/crystalline iron-silicide (c-FeSi2) nanoscale phase and its evolution due to cycling, as well as their impact on the proximate pore network. Scattering and 2D/3D imaging techniques are applied to probe the anode structural ageing from nm to μm length scales, after up to 300 charge-discharge cycles, and combined with modeling using the collected image data as an input. We obtain a quantified insight into the inhomogeneous lithiation of the active material induced by the morphology changes due to cycling. The electrochemical performance of Li-ion batteries does not only depend on the active material used, but also on the architecture of its proximity. Alloy systems like Si/FeSi2 nano composites have great potential as stable anode materials in Li-ion batteries, but their characterization at different scales and throughout their ageing remains challenging. Here the authors use scattering and 2D/3D imaging techniques combined with modeling to elucidate morphology changes upon cycling of the anode.

Abstract: International audience; Prelithiation of silicon/graphite-based composite anodes is a promising strategy to limit Li-ion battery capacity loss over long cycling. We report on the spontaneous-corrosion-driven-lithiation (SCDL) of lithium metal on the anode surface of a-Si/c-FeSi$_2$/graphite//LiNi$_{0·6}$Mn$_{0·2}$Co$_{0·2}$O$^2$ cells, and compare it to electrochemically-driven-lithiation (EDL). High cyclability performances are achieved, i.e. more than 1760 cycles at 100% depth-of-discharge with less than 11% capacity loss at C/2. To quantify the fate of the lithium supply over prolonged cycling and follow in situ the benefits of prelithiation, we perform simultaneous operando synchrotron wide-angle and small-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS/SAXS). By accessing both the graphite lithiation process (WAXS) and the nanostructural variations of the silicon phase (SAXS), we obtain a complete picture of the lithium repartition during lithiation/delithiation of the prelithiated anode. Results indicate that the additional lithium is stored in the silicon, which acts as a reservoir compensating for lithium trapping. The silicon phase therefore plays an essential role but without the detrimental effect of large volume variations. By design, SCDL leads to a more heterogeneous prelithiation compared to EDL given that only the electrode area directly in contact with the lithium metal is initially prelithiated. However, we show that during cycling the additional lithium is redistributed throughout the electrode by migrating into the silicon and, finally, the two methods yield equivalent systems, with similar electrode morphologies and a much increased cell performance over cycling. Prelithiation could therefore be used for the production of high energy density and highly stable Li-ion batteries, implementing the easily up-scalable SCDL process.

Abstract: Ternary metal chalcogenide nanocrystals (NCs) offer exciting opportunities as novel materials to be explored on the nanoscale showing optoelectronic properties tunable with size and composition. CuInS2 (CIS) NCs are the most widely studied representatives of this family as they can be easily prepared with good size control and in high yield by reacting the metal precursors (copper iodide and indium acetate) in dodecanethiol (DDT). Despite the widespread use of this synthesis method, both the reaction mechanism and the surface state of the obtained NCs remain elusive. Here, we perform in situ X-ray diffraction using synchrotron radiation to monitor the pre- and postnucleation stages of the formation of CIS NCs. SAXS measurements show that the reaction intermediate formed at 100 °C presents a periodic lamellar structure with a characteristic spacing of 34.9 A. Abstract: In this study, we report originally the excellent electrochemical performance of a micro-supercapacitor based on diamond-coated silicon nanowire (SiNW) electrodes using an aqueous electrolyte (0.1 M LiClO4). The deposition of a nanometric boron-doped diamond coating on SiNWs allowed the enlargement of the electrochemical window up to 3 V maintaining an extraordinary capacitive electrochemical response due to its high overvoltage. Thereby, the device exhibited an areal capacitance of 0.4 mF cm-2, a high power density of 50 mW cm-2 as well as an outstanding cycling stability after 2·106 galvanostatic charge-discharge cycles at a high current density of 10 mA cm-2. In addition, an ultra-fast charge-discharge rate was determined to be 1.5 ms, demonstrating the supercapacitor's enormous ability to deliver high power values at very rapid pulse times (Pmax: 321 mW cm-2). These results also evidence the potential of diamond coating to overcome the main drawbacks of silicon (e.g. rapid silicon oxidation due to presence of water) to be employed in aqueous electrolyte supercapacitors. Consequently, the role of diamond paves the way to high performance SiNW-based micro-supercapacitor development at large electrochemical windows in aqueous electrolytes, which are at present limited to 1 V.

Abstract: International audience; The growth of GaN on graphene by molecular beam epitaxy was investigated. The most stable epitaxial relationship, i.e. [00.1]-oriented grains, is obtained at high temperature and N-rich conditions, which match those for nanowire growth. Alternatively, at moderate temperature and Ga-rich conditions, several metastable orientations are observed at the nucleation stage, which evolve preferentially towards [00.1]-oriented grains. The dependence of the nucleation regime on growth conditions was assigned to Ga adatom kinetics. This statement is consistent with the calculated graphene/GaN in-plane lattice coincidence and supported by a combination of transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, photoluminescence, and Raman spectroscopy experiments.

Abstract: International audience; Silicon-germanium nanostructures are promising anode materials for high stability, high capacity and fast cycling Li-ion batteries. In this work, we report on the outstanding performance of original SiGe/Si core@shell nanoparticle heterostructures synthetized in one step by laser pyrolysis of silane and germane. By tuning the silane to germane ratio, the composition of Si100-xGex alloy was readily adjusted. Nanoparticles with x = 0, 20, 47, 77, and 100 were investigated and the composition of each alloy (including internal mixed phases) was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The electrochemical performances of the Si100-xGex alloys were evaluated by cycling half cell batteries from C/5 to 5C. The optimal trade-off between stability and capacity was obtained in Si53Ge47 core shell nanoparticles alloy. This material exhibits the best performance reported so far for SiGe compounds, with a reversible specific capacity of 1695 mAh.g-1 after 60 cycles (90 % of its initial value). The (de)alloying properties of this optimal Si53Ge47 heterostructure were followed by Operando synchrotron WAXS measurements, suggesting sequential lithiation of the various phases present in the material. The alloying process, combined with the realization of peculiar nanostructures composed of a Ge-rich core and a Si-rich shell, therefore allow to reach electrochemical properties suited for a practical application in energy storage device.

Abstract: Pervaporative dehydration of 96 vol% ethanol solution was used as an experimental model for the determination of hybrid alginate membranes separation performance. Series of membranes filled with different metal oxides particles (magnetite, zinc, silver, titanium(IV) and chromium(III) oxide) were prepared and the effect of the oxide’s nature and filling ratio on pervaporative transport and separation effectiveness was discussed. Hierarchical agglomerative cluster analysis of the evaluated parameters was applied to divide all membranes into four clusters, with the most effective comprising of 10 and 15 wt% magnetite loaded for which Pervaporative Separation Index reached the value of 56.79 and 76.59, respectively.

Abstract: International audience; Microalgae are good candidates for toxic metal remediation biotechnologies. This study explores the cellular processes implemented by the green microalga Coccomyxa actinabiotis to take up and cope with silver over the concentration range of 10(-7) to 10(-2) M Ag(+). Understanding these processes enables us to assess the potential of this microalga for applications for bioremediation. Silver in situ speciation and localization were investigated using X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy. Silver toxicity was evaluated by monitoring microalgal growth and photochemical parameters. Different accumulation mechanisms were brought out depending on silver concentration. At low micromolar concentration, microalgae fixed all silver initially present in solution, trapping it inside the cells into the cytosol, mainly as unreduced Ag(I) bound with molecules containing sulfur. Silver was efficiently detoxified. When concentration increased, silver spread throughout the cell and particularly entered the chloroplast, where it damaged the photosystem. Most silver was reduced to Ag(0) and aggregated to form crystalline silver nanoparticles of face-centered cubic structure with a mean size of 10 nm. An additional minor interaction of silver with molecules containing sulfur indicated the concomitant existence of the mechanism observed at low concentration or nanoparticle capping. Nanoparticles were observed in chloroplasts, in mitochondria, on the plasma membrane, on cytosolic membrane structures, and in vacuoles. Above 10(-4) M Ag(+), damages were irreversible, and photosynthesis and growth were definitely inhibited. However, high silver amounts remained confined inside microalgae, showing their potential for the bioremediation of contaminated water.

Abstract: Thianthrenes have been nearly forgotten as phosphors in recent years, but are now coming back, showing their strong potential in luminescent applications. Here, we present a comprehensive photophysical study of a carbazolyl derivative of thianthrene in different matrices and environments. The diffusion of oxygen is slowed down in the rigid environment of thianthrene organic crystals, suppressing their phosphorescence quenching.Triplet–triplet annihilation is also not significantly active in these systems. Both conditions facilitate the observation of simultaneous fluorescence and phosphorescence emissions at room temperature, in air, giving origin to strong white luminescence. Moreover, the color coordinates of the dual fluorescence–phosphorescence white emission, which is observed only in rigid amorphous media and in crystals, can be tuned.

Abstract: The motion of CH3NH3+ cations in the low-temperature phase of the promising photovoltaic material methylammonium lead triiodide (CH3NH3PbI3) is investigated experimentally as well as theoretically, with a particular focus on the activation energy. Inelastic and quasi-elastic neutron scattering measurements reveal an activation energy of ∼48 meV. Through a combination of experiments and first-principles calculations, we attribute this activation energy to the relative rotation of CH3 against an NH3 group that stays bound to the inorganic cage. The inclusion of nuclear quantum effects through path integral molecular dynamics gives an activation energy of ∼42 meV, in good agreement with the neutron scattering experiments. For deuterated samples (CD3NH3PbI3), both theory and experiment observe a higher activation energy for the rotation of CD3 against NH3, which results from the smaller nuclear quantum effects in CD3. The rotation of the NH3 group, which is bound to the inorganic cage via strong hydrogen bonding, is unlikely to occur at low temperatures due to its high energy barrier of ∼120 meV.

Abstract: International audience; Supercapacitors offer high power densities but require further improvements in energy densities for widespread commercial applications. In addition to the conventional strategy of using large surface area materials to enhance energy storage, recently, matching electrolyte ion sizes to material pore sizes has been shown to be particularly effective. However, synthesis and characterization of materials with precise pore sizes remain challenging. Herein, we propose to evaluate the layered structures in graphene derivatives as being analogous to pores and study the possibility of ion sieving. A class of pillared graphene based materials with suitable interlayer separation were synthesized, readily characterized by X-ray diffraction, and tested in various electrolytes. Electrochemical results show that the interlayer galleries could indeed sieve electrolyte ions based on size constrictions: ions with naked sizes that are smaller than the interlayer separation access the galleries, whereas the larger ions are restricted. These first observations of ion sieving in pillared graphene-based materials enable efficient charge storage through optimization of the d-spacing/ion size couple.

Abstract: International audience; Tin sulfide nanoparticles have a great potential for use in a broad range of applications related to solar energy conversion (photovoltaics, photocatalysis), electrochemical energy storage, and thermoelectrics. The development of chemical synthesis methods allowing for the precise control of size, shape, composition, and crystalline phase is essential. We present a novel approach giving access to monodisperse square SnS nanoplatelets, whose dimensions can be adjusted in the range of 4-15 nm (thickness) and 15-100 nm (edge length). Their growth occurs via controlled assembly of initially formed polyhedral seed nanoparticles, which themselves originate from an intermediate tetrachlorotin-oleate complex. The SnS nanoplatelets crystallize in the alpha-SnS orthorhombic herzenbergite structure (space group Pnma) with no evidence of secondary phases. Electron tomography, high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy and electron diffraction combined with image simulations evidence the presence of ordered Sn vacancy rich (100) planes within the SnS nanoplatelets, in accordance with their slightly S-rich composition observed. When using elemental sulfur instead of thioacetarnide as the sulfur source, the same reaction yields small (2-3 nm) spherical SnS2 nanoparticles, which crystallize in the berndtite 4H crystallographic phase (space group P3m1). They exhibit quantum confinement (E-g = 2.8 eV vs 2.2 eV in the bulk) and room temperature photoluminescence. By means of electrochemical measurements we determined their electron affinity EA = -4.8 eV, indicating the possibility to use them as a substitute for CdS (EA = -4.6 eV) in the buffer layer of thin film solar cells.

Abstract: International audience; The structure of solution cast Nafion (R) membranes that were uniaxially stretched, and then thermally annealed was studied over an extended observation window, from a few angstroms to several hundreds of angstroms, using both Small-Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS) and Wide-Angle X-Ray Diffraction (WAXD). This Nafion (R) membrane preparation allowed highlighting new structural features, never reported previously. Indeed, while SAXS data evidenced moderate effect of stretching with different behaviors of the matrix and ionomer peaks, WAXD spectra showed a strong stretching induced anisotropy of the crystalline phase. Abstract: Establishing good electrical contacts to nanoscale devices is a major issue for modern technology and contacting 2D materials is no exception to the rule. One-dimensional edge-contacts to graphene were recently shown to outperform surface contacts but the method remains difficult to scale up. We report a resist-free and scalable method to fabricate few graphene layers with electrical contacts in a single growth step. This method derives from the discovery reported here of the growth of few graphene layers on a metallic carbide by thermal annealing of a carbide forming metallic film on SiC in high vacuum. We exploit the combined effect of edge-contact and partially-covalent surface epitaxy between graphene and the metallic carbide to fabricate devices in which low contact-resistance and Josephson effect are observed. Abstract: Mixed halide hybrid perovskites CH3NH3PbI3–xClx (MAPICl) show higher charge carrier diffusion lengths, improved solar cell characteristics, and enhanced stability as compared to their single halide counterparts CH3NH3PbI3 (MAPI). This is surprising in view of the fact that the actually observed Cl content is very low (x < 0.1) as the incorporation of large amounts of Cl in the MAPI lattice is crystallographically not possible. Understanding the role of chlorine in these systems is therefore of the utmost importance and has been the subject of several experimental and theoretical studies. The main conclusions are that Cl addition leads to larger grain sizes and preferential crystalline orientation; however, so far a more quantitative description of these aspects is lacking. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction microscopy is a very promising technique in this respect, as it allows for the direct imaging of crystalline domains oriented in a selected direction with a resolution of some hundreds of nanometers. Abstract: The spin–orbit coupling relating the electron spin and momentum allows for spin generation, detection and manipulation. It thus fulfils the three basic functions of the spin field-effect transistor. However, the spin Hall effect in bulk germanium is too weak to produce spin currents, whereas large Rashba effect at Ge(111) surfaces covered with heavy metals could generate spin-polarized currents. The Rashba spin splitting can actually be as large as hundreds of meV. Here we show a giant spin-to-charge conversion in metallic states at the Fe/Ge(111) interface due to the Rashba coupling. We generate very large charge currents by direct spin pumping into the interface states from 20 K to room temperature. The presence of these metallic states at the Fe/Ge(111) interface is demonstrated by first-principles electronic structure calculations. By this, we demonstrate how to take advantage of the spin–orbit coupling for the development of the spin field-effect transistor., Engineering the interaction between spin and charge is important for the creation of spintronics devices. Here, the authors show that the Rashba effect at a single crystalline Fe/Ge(111) interface produces enhanced spin-charge conversion, which could help develop a spin field-effect-transistor.

44. Accessing the Lithiation/Delithiation Mechanism of a Li-Ion Battery FeSi2/Si/Graphite Composite Negative Electrode and Differentiating the Si/Graphite Contributions By Simultaneous Operando Synchrotron SAXS/Waxs

Abstract: Combined with renewable energy harvesting technologies, such as solar panels or wind turbines, energy storage is the key to keeping up with the ever-increasing demand for electric energy and reducing the world dependency on fossil fuels. Over the last three decades lithium-ion batteries (LiBs), starting with the first commercialized cell by Sony in 1990 [1], have evolved from the most promising energy-storage technologies [2] to the most widely used nowadays. Not only can LiBs be found in portable devices such as laptops, they are also used in larger scale applications such as electric vehicles. Since the first commercialization of LiBs, graphite (372 mAh.g-1) has been the usual negative electrode material. Nevertheless, the continuous demand, in the automotive industry in particular, for more performant, light, safe and cheap LiBs drives research towards the design and development of new electrode materials characterized in particular by high energy densities and a longer capacity retention during cycling. Among the candidates for high specific gravimetric capacity is silicon (3579 mAh.g-1) [3]. However, two major problems hamper the use of this material as a LiB electrode material. The first is its high volumetric change (297 % [4]) during lithiation, which causes particle cracking and pulverization during cycling which in turn leads to a quick fading of the cell capacity. The second is its high first cycle irreversible capacity. Reducing the particle size to the nanoscale and thus reducing the mechanical strain on the particle by attenuating its volumetric expansion/contraction helps alleviate pulverization. However, because of poor electrode structural stability during cycling this approach alone does not stop capacity degradation [5]. Using a dual-phase composite material that contains an inactive host matrix in which the active material is well-dispersed also alleviates pulverization. The FeSi2/Si/graphite anode material is particularly interesting due to its low-cost, high reversible capacity and good cycling stability [6]. This material is composed of a dual-phase FeSi2 (inactive)/amorphous Si (active) composite and graphite, a conductive matrix to accommodate the Si volumetric expansion, and is seen as well suited for the development of high capacity LiBs. Be that as it may, it is still unclear how this complex material functions and what makes it so performant. With the aim of accessing the lithiation/delithiation mechanism of a FeSi2/Si/graphite negative LiB electrode, we performed simultaneous operando Small and Wide Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS and WAXS) measurements on a cycling NMC//FeSi2/Si+graphite pouch-cell filled with a 1 mol.L-1 LiPF6 in FEC/EMC (30/70 wt%) electrolyte at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France. Through WAXS we were able to investigate the local structure (10-1 nm) of the cell materials and in particular observe the lithiation/delithiation of the graphite phase by following its corresponding Bragg peak and those of its different lithiated phases (LiC30, LiC24, LiC18, LiC12 and LiC6). Simultaneously, we gained information on the active silicon state of lithiation/delithiation by observing the morphology changes occurring at the nano-scale (1 nm to 10 nm) during the volumetric expansion/contraction of the silicon through SAXS measurements. The combined information give us insight on the lithiation/delithiation mechanism of the negative electrode and enabled us to dissociate the capacity contribution of the silicon phase from that of the graphite phase as a function of potential, time and capacity. By cycling the cell at several current-rates and by repeating the same experiment on an aged cell cycled 300 times, we were also able to enquire into the impact of fast-charging and ageing on the lithiation/delithiation mechanism of the negative electrode. In this talk, we will present those results after proposing a lithiation/delithiation mechanism for the FeSi2/Si/graphite composite electrode. Abstract: Highly oriented hybrid thin films composed of rod-shaped CdSe nanocrystals and poly(3-hexylthiophene) are prepared by mechanical rubbing. The orientation distribution of both CdSe nanorods and crystalline P3HT domains is determined by a combination of transmission electron microscopy (electron diffraction, low dose high-resolution TEM, and tomography), grazing incidence X-ray diffraction measurements, and UV-vis spectroscopy. After rubbing, P3HT crystalline domains show a preferential face-on orientation ((010) contact plane) and the chains align parallel to the rubbing direction. CdSe nanorods also align parallel to the rubbing direction, but the level of alignment is a function of their concentration in the polymer matrix: the lower their concentration, the higher the level of in-plane orientation of both the nanorods and the polymer chains. GIXD and electron diffraction suggest that CdSe nanorods adopt a preferential contact plane on the substrate after rubbing. The high in-plane alignment of the nanorods is mainly due to the orientation of the surrounding P3HT matrix. In particular, low dose HR-TEM shows that the local orientation of individual NRs matches the orientation of the surrounding pi-stacked P3HT chains. For a high NR concentration, bundling of NRs into larger aggregates prevents their efficient alignment by rubbing.

Abstract: The field of spintronics is based on the manipulation of the spin degree of freedom. It uses the carrier spin angular momentum as a basic functional unit in addition to the charge. The first requirement of a semiconductor-based spintronic technology is the efficient generation of spin-polarized carriers into the device heterostructure made of Si or Ge (the materials of mainstream microelectronics) at room temperature. In this presentation, we focus on the generation of a sizeable spin population into Ge by spin pumping. Spin pumping corresponds to the generation of a pure spin current in the Ge film by exciting the ferromagnetic resonance of an adjacent ferromagnetic electrode with microwaves. The pure spin current is then detected using spin-orbit based effects. Our aim is to understand the basic mechanisms of spin pumping into Ge as well as the spin-to-charge conversion by inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE, bulk effect) [1-4] and Rashba-Edelstein effect (interface effect) [5]. The influence of interface states is clearly demonstrated. Moreover, using the spin-split Rashba sub-surface states of the Ge(111) surface, we succeeded in demonstrating a giant conversion of a spin current generated by spin pumping into a charge current by the Rashba-Edelstein effect [6,7]. Abstract: A large enhancement of the magnetic anisotropy of Ni nanowires (NWs) embedded in anodic aluminium oxide porous membranes is obtained as a result of an induced magnetoelastic (ME) anisotropy contribution. This unusual large anisotropy enhancement depends on the diameter of the NWs and exceeds the magnetostatic (MS) contribution. As a consequence, it leads to effective magnetic anisotropy energies as large as 1.4 × 10(6) erg cm(-3), which are of the same order of magnitude and comparable to the MS energies of harder magnetic materials like Co NWs. Specifically, from ferromagnetic resonance experiments, the magnetic anisotropy of the NWs has been observed to increase as its diameter is decreased, leading to values that are about four times larger than the corresponding value when only the MS anisotropy is present. Our results are consistent with the recently proposed growth mechanism of Ni NWs that proceeds via a poly-crystalline stage at the bottom followed by a single-crystalline stage with texture [110] parallel to the axis of the NWs. A strong correlation between reducing the diameter of the NWs with the decrease of the length of the poly-crystalline segment and the enhancement of the effective magnetic anisotropy has been shown. Magnetization curves obtained from alternating gradient magnetometry experiments show that the average ME anisotropy results from the competition between the magnetic anisotropies of both crystalline segments of the NWs. Understanding the influence of size and confinement effects on the magnetic properties of nanocomposites is of prime interest for the development of novel and agile devices.

Abstract: The spin–orbit coupling relating the electron spin and momentum allows for spin generation, detection and manipulation. It thus fulfils the three basic functions of the spin field-effect-transistor made of semiconductors. In this paper, we review our recent results on spin–charge conversion in bulk germanium and at the Ge(111) surface. We used the spin pumping technique to generate pure spin currents to be injected into bulk germanium and at the Fe/Ge(111) interface. The mechanism for spin–charge conversion in bulk germanium is the spin Hall effect and we could experimentally determine the spin Hall angle θSHE, i.e., the spin–charge conversion efficiency, in heavily doped n-type and p-type germanium. We found very small values at room temperature: θSHE ≈ (1–2) × 10−3 in n-Ge and θSHE ≈ (6–7) × 10−4 in p-Ge. Moreover, we pointed out the essential role of spin dependent scattering on ionized impurities in the spin Hall effect mechanism. Abstract: International audience; Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) is certainly the most known and most used conductive polymer because it is commercially available and shows great potential for organic electronic, photovoltaic, and thermoelectric applications. Studies dedicated to PEDOT films have led to high conductivity enhancements. However, an exhaustive understanding of the mechanisms governing such enhancement is still lacking, hindered by the semicrystalline nature of the material itself. In this article, we report the development of highly conductive PEDOT films by controlling the crystallization of the PEDOT chains and by a subsequent dopant engineering approach using iron(III) trifluoromethanesulfonate as oxidant, N-methyl pyrrolidone as polymerization rate controller and sulfuric as dopant. XRD, HRTEM, Synchrotron GIWAXS analyses and conductivity measurements down to 3 K allowed us to unravel the organization, doping, and transport mechanism of these highly conductive PEDOT materials. N-methyl pyrrolidone promotes bigger crystallites and structure enhancement during polymerization, whereas sulfuric acid treatment allows the replacement of triflate anions by hydrogenosulfate and increases the charge carrier concentration. We finally propose a charge transport model that fully corroborates our experimental observations. These polymers exhibit conductivities up to 5400 S cm(-1) and thus show great promise for room temperature thermoelectric applications or ITO alternative for transparent electrodes.

Abstract: International audience; tert-butylthiol (tBuSH) is used as the sulfur source, surface ligand and co-solvent in the synthesis of CuInS2 nanocrystals (NCs). The presented method gives direct access to short-ligand-capped NCs without post-synthetic ligand exchange. The obtained 5nm CuInS2 NCs crystallize in the cubic sphalerite phase with space group F-43m and a lattice parameter a=5.65 angstrom. Their comparably large optical and electrochemical band gap of 2.6-2.7eV is attributed to iodine incorporation into the crystal structure as reflected by the composition Cu1.04In0.96S1.84I0.62 determined by EDX. Conductivity measurements on thin films of the tBuSH-capped NCs result in a value of 2.5(.)10(-2)Sm(-1), which represents an increase by a factor of 400 compared to established dodecanethiol-capped CuInS2 NCs.
