File S1 Glossary of abbreviations used in the paper., This research was funded by the TERRANOVA Project, H2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie grant agreement no. 813904., Reliable quantitative vegetation reconstructions for Europe during the Holocene are crucial to improving our understanding of landscape dynamics, making it possible to assess the past effects of environmental variables and land-use change on ecosystems and biodiversity, and mitigating their effects in the future. We present here the most spatially extensive and temporally continuous pollen-based reconstructions of plant cover in Europe (at a spatial resolution of 1° × 1°) over the Holocene (last 11.7 ka BP) using the ‘Regional Estimates of VEgetation Abundance from Large Sites’ (REVEALS) model. This study has three main aims. First, to present the most accurate and reliable generation of REVEALS reconstructions across Europe so far. This has been achieved by including a larger number of pollen records compared to former analyses, in particular from the Mediterranean area. Second, to discuss methodological issues in the quantification of past land cover by using alternative datasets of relative pollen productivities (RPPs), one of the key input parameters of REVEALS, to test model sensitivity. Finally, to validate our reconstructions with the global forest change dataset. The results suggest that the RPPs.st1 (31 taxa) dataset is best suited to producing regional vegetation cover estimates for Europe. Abstract: International audience; A digital Finite Impulse Response (FIR) filter is a ubiquitous block in digital signal processing applications and its behavior is determined by its coefficients. To protect filter coefficients from an adversary, efficient obfuscation techniques have been proposed, either by hiding them behind decoys or replacing them by key bits. In this article, we initially introduce a query attack that can discover the secret key of such obfuscated FIR filters, which could not be broken by existing prominent attacks. Then, we propose a first of its kind hybrid technique, including both hardware obfuscation and logic locking using a point function for the protection of parallel direct and transposed forms of digital FIR filters. Experimental results show that the hybrid protection technique can lead to FIR filters with higher security while maintaining the hardware complexity competitive or superior to those locked by prominent logic locking methods. It is also shown that the protected multiplier blocks and FIR filters are resilient to existing attacks. The results on different forms and realizations of FIR filters show that the parallel direct form FIR filter has a promising potential for a secure design.

Abstract: International audience; ICG (impedance cardiography) is in parallel to ECG (electrocardiography) an important indicator of the functioning of the heart and of the overall cardiovascular system. Adding the ICG to ECG measurement functionality into the wearable devices improves the quality of health monitoring, as the ICG reflects relevant hemodynamic parameters (informative time intervals, but also the stroke volume and cardiac output and their variability). The most challenging task of the ICG signal processing is to extract the key points B, C, X of the cardiac periodstart, peak-location, and value at this point and the end of the LVET (left ventricular ejection time) sub-period in the cardiac cycle. A novel block diagram and analog implementation of it has been proposed, analyzed, and discussed, with discussion of the benefits of the proposed solution. The proposed solution enables developing of relatively simple very power-efficient solutions, monitoring the ICG values of the person with smart and efficient data acquisition and processing.

Abstract: Level-crossing ADCs reduce the size of data streams in wearable devices. However, in the context of electrocardiogram (ECG) signals, such an event-driven data source results in a variable length two-dimensional (time-amplitude tuples) data vector for each ECG beat. It is difficult to apply many standard signal processing techniques to this data making classifiers more complex. In this paper we resolve these difficulties by mapping the variable length 2D vectors to a fixed length feature vector comprising the first 81 coefficients of a Chebyshev polynomial expansion of the ECG beat. We show that beat reconstruction based on these 81 coefficients results in an average RMS difference to the original beat of only ≈ 3.08%. Using these coefficients as the feature set input to a simple three-layered ANN binary (Normal / Abnormal) ECG classifier and we demonstrate 98.15% average accuracy and 96.07% average sensitivity. Using the same simple ANN structure we also constructed a 4-class ANN structure which achieved 98.80% average accuracy and 91.5% average sensitivity. Both these networks have only 20k parameters and outperform the state-of-the-art classifiers, enabling low-power edge computing.

Abstract: International audience; Cardiovascular diseases can be detected early by analyzing the electrocardiogram of a patient using wearable systems. In the context of smart sensors, detecting arrhythmias with good accuracy and ultra-low power consumption is required for long-term monitoring. This paper presents a novel cardiac arrhythmia classification method based on antidictionaries. The features are sequences of consecutive slopes generated from the input signal's event-driven processing. The proposed system shows an average detection accuracy of 98% while offering an ultra-low complexity. This antidictionary-based method is also particularly suited to imbalanced datasets since the antidictionaries are created exclusively from heartbeats classified as normal beats.

Abstract: International audience; Cardiovascular diseases can be detected early by analyzing the electrocardiogram of a patient using wearable systems. In the context of smart sensors, detecting arrhythmias with good accuracy and ultra-low power consumption is required for long-term monitoring. This paper presents a novel cardiac arrhythmia classification method based on antidictionaries. The features are sequences of consecutive slopes that are generated from event-driven processing of the input signal. The proposed system shows an average detection accuracy of 98% while offering an ultra-low complexity. This antidictionary-based method is also particularly suited to imbalanced datasets since the antidictionaries are created exclusively from heartbeats classified as normal beats.

Abstract: The aim of this article is to provide a general overview of an integrated product development focused on the important aspects and new ways in system engineering and mechatronic design. First, the chapter introduces fundamental definitions and continues with requirement and concept evaluation techniques. Only some phases of the development process are presented in this paper (i.e. Analysis/ Certification, Specification/ Validation). The design approach presented in this paper is combined with a SysML modeling approach which is ongoing joint research topic of TUT and TKK.

Abstract: International audience; Early design is widely accepted inside the engineering design community as a crucial design phase. This is due to the fact that decisions taken at this stage constrained heavily the final performances of products. This article presents a design framework dedicated to the early design phases of mechatronic products. This framework provides a scientifically coherent methodology for refinement, analysis, modeling, comparison and evaluation of design solutions at early stage of the design process. SysML is proposed by the authors as a powerful modeling language properly adapted to mechatronic requirements. In addition, the article proposes to combine SysML with dimensional analysis and qualitative physics in order to provide a design tool able to proceed also with early simulations, comparisons and evaluations. The framework proposed in this article is based on strong theoretical bases and is the combination of two doctoral works. A third doctoral work is planned on the same research issue.

However, despite advances in ancient DNA research that conclusively identified the pandemic’s causative agent (bacterium Yersinia pestis), our knowledge of the Black Death remains limited, based primarily on qualitative remarks in medieval written sources available for some areas of Western Europe. Here, we remedy this situation by applying a pioneering new approach, ‘big data palaeoecology’, which, starting from palynological data, evaluates the scale of the Black Death’s mortality on a regional scale across Europe. We collected pollen data on landscape change from 261 radiocarbon-dated coring sites (lakes and wetlands) located across 19 modern-day European countries. We used two independent methods of analysis to evaluate whether the changes we see in the landscape at the time of the Black Death agree with the hypothesis that a large portion of the population, upwards of half, died within a few years in the 21 historical regions we studied. While we can confirm that the Black Death had a devastating impact in some regions, we found that it had negligible or no impact in others. These inter-regional differences in the Black Death’s mortality across Europe demonstrate the significance of cultural, ecological, economic, societal and climatic factors that mediated the dissemination and impact of the disease. Abstract: High-throughput sequencing technologies were used to identify plant viruses in cereal samples surveyed from 2012 to 2017. Fifteen genome sequences of a tenuivirus infecting wheat, oats, and spelt in Estonia, Norway, and Sweden were identified and characterized by their distances to other tenuivirus sequences. Like most tenuiviruses, the genome of this tenuivirus contains four genomic segments. The isolates found from different countries shared at least 92% nucleotide sequence identity at the genome level. The planthopper Javesella pellucida was identified as a vector of the virus. Laboratory transmission tests using this vector indicated that wheat, oats, barley, rye, and triticale, but none of the tested pasture grass species (Alopecurus pratensis, Dactylis glomerata, Festuca rubra, Lolium multiflorum, Phleum pratense, and Poa pratensis), are susceptible. Taking into account the vector and host range data, the tenuivirus we have found most probably represents European wheat striate mosaic virus first identified about 60 years ago. Interestingly, whereas we were not able to infect any of the tested cereal species mechanically, Nicotiana benthamiana was infected via mechanical inoculation in laboratory conditions, displaying symptoms of yellow spots and vein clearing evolving into necrosis, eventually leading to plant death. Surprisingly, one of the virus genome segments (RNA2) encoding both a putative host systemic movement enhancer protein and a putative vector transmission factor was not detected in N. benthamiana after several passages even though systemic infection was observed, raising fundamental questions about the role of this segment in the systemic spread in several hosts.

Abstract: Neurocognitive disorders are frequent among chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. Identifying and characterizing cognitive impairment (CI) can help to assess the ability of adherence to CKD risk reduction strategy, identify potentially reversible causes of cognitive decline, modify pharmacotherapy, educate the patient and caregiver and provide appropriate patient and caregiver support. Numerous factors are associated with the development and progression of CI in CKD patients and various conditions can influence the results of cognitive assessment in these patients. Abstract: International audience; ICG (impedance cardiography) and ECG (electrocardiography) provide important indications about functioning of the heart and of overall cardiovascular system. Measuring ICG along with ECG using wearable devices will improve the quality of health monitoring, as ICG points to important hemodynamic parameters (such as time intervals, stroke volume, cardiac output, and their variability). In this work, various electrode locations (12 different setups) have been tested for possible joint ECG & ICG data acquisition (using the same electrodes) and signal quality has been evaluated for every setup. It is shown that, while typically ICG is acquired over the whole thorax, a wrist-based joint acquisition of ECG & ICG signals can achieve acceptable signal quality and therefore can be considered in wearable sensing.

Abstract: International audience; To detect cardiovascular diseases (CVD), electrocardiogram (ECG) of a patient must be recorded and analyzed for a long period. For an effective diagnosis, the ECG recording system must automatically adapt to new patients. This paper presents a low-complexity artificial neural network that exclusively uses the consecutive slopes of ECG signal as inputs. These features are extracted using a level-crossing ADC and a simple TDC-based event-driven processing chain. The proposed clockless system can detect arrhythmias in ECG with 98.4% accuracy and reduce the ANN hardware complexity by more than half compared to recent literature. It is perfectly adapted to integrated wearable monitoring systems and shows good adaptability to new patients. Abstract: International audience; This paper describes the study of an integrated system for the detection of the B-C-X characteristic points of impedance cardiography (ICG) signals, to evaluate the stroke volume of a patient. It compares a discrete-time digital approach and a continuous-time digital architecture, using a level-crossing Analog-to-Digital Conversion (LC-ADC). The results show that the measurement accuracy of the stroke volume, with a relative error between 9% and 13%, is sufficient for practical use and opens the opportunity for future fully integrated circuit solutions. This study also points out that, unlike ECG, the continuous-time digital approach does not bring any improvements for ICG-based systems.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a high-level circuit obfuscation technique to prevent the theft of intellectual property (IP) of integrated circuits. In particular, our technique protects a class of circuits that relies on constant multiplications, such as filters and neural networks, where the constants themselves are the IP to be protected. By making use of decoy constants and a key-based scheme, a reverse engineer adversary at an untrusted foundry is rendered incapable of discerning true constants from decoy constants. The time-multiplexed constant multiplication (TMCM) block of such circuits, which realizes the multiplication of an input variable by a constant at a time, is considered as our case study for obfuscation. Furthermore, two TMCM design architectures are taken into account; an implementation using a multiplier and a multiplierless shift-adds implementation. Optimization methods are also applied to reduce the hardware complexity of these architectures. The well-known satisfiability (SAT) and automatic test pattern generation (ATPG) attacks are used to determine the vulnerability of the obfuscated designs. It is observed that the proposed technique incurs small overheads in area, power, and delay that are comparable to the hardware complexity of prominent logic locking methods. Yet, the advantage of our approach is in the insight that constants-instead of arbitrary circuit nodes-become key-protected. Abstract: International audience; The Besicovitch pseudodistance defined in [1] for biinfinite sequences is invariant by translations. We generalize the definition to arbitrary locally compact second-countable groups and study how properties of the pseudodistance, including invariance by translations, are determined by those of the sequence of sets of finite positive measure used to define it. In particular, we restate from [2] that if the Besicovitch pseudodistance comes from an exhaustive Følner sequence, then every shift is an isometry. For non-Følner sequences, it is proved that some shifts are not isometries, and the Besicovitch pseudodistance with respect to some subsequences even makes them discontinuous.

Abstract: The open-source event-driven ECG dataset is available at https://github.com/jedaiproject/Open-Source-Event-Driven-ECG-Dataset; International audience; In this article, non-uniformly sampled electrocardiogram (ECG) signals obtained from level-crossing analog-to-digital converters (LC-ADCs) are analyzed for event-driven classification and compression performance. The signal compression results show that it is important to assess the distortion in event-driven signals when simulating LC-ADC models, especially at lower resolutions and larger quantization steps. The effects of varying the LC-ADC parameters for the application of cardiac arrhythmia classifiers are also assessed using an artificial neural network (ANN) and the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database. In comparison with uniformly-sampled data, it is possible to achieve comparable classification accuracy at a much lower complexity with event-driven ECG signals. Abstract: Aerosolized black carbon is monitored worldwide to quantify its impact on air quality and climate. Given its importance, measurements of black carbon mass concentrations must be conducted with instruments operating in quality-checked and ensured conditions to generate data which are reliable and comparable temporally and geographically. In this study, we report the results from the largest characterization and intercomparison of filter-based absorption photometers, the Aethalometer model AE33, belonging to several European monitoring networks. Under controlled laboratory conditions, a total of 23 instruments measured mass concentrations of black carbon from three well-characterized aerosol sources: synthetic soot, nigrosin particles, and ambient air from the urban background of Leipzig, Germany. The objective was to investigate the individual performance of the instruments and their comparability; we analyzed the response of the instruments to the different aerosol sources and the impact caused by the use of obsolete filter materials and the application of maintenance activities. Differences in the instrument-to-instrument variabilities from equivalent black carbon (eBC) concentrations reported at 880 nm were determined before maintenance activities (for soot measurements, average deviation from total least square regression was −2.0 % and the range −16 % to 7 %; for nigrosin measurements, average deviation was 0.4 % and the range −15 % to 17 %), and after they were carried out (for soot measurements, average deviation was −1.0 % and the range −14 % to 8 %; for nigrosin measurements, the average deviation was 0.5 % and the range −12 % to 15 %). The deviations are in most of the cases explained by the type of filter material employed by the instruments, the total particle load on the filter, and the flow calibration. The results of this intercomparison activity show that relatively small unit-to-unit variability of AE33-based particle light absorbing measurements is possible with well-maintained instruments. It is crucial to follow the guidelines for maintenance activities and the use of the proper filter tape in the AE33 to ensure high quality and comparable black carbon (BC) measurements among international observational networks., ACTRIS and COLOSSAL provided financial support for the execution of the experiments. Abstract: The skew monoidal categories of Szlach\'anyi are a weakening of monoidal categories where the three structural laws of left and right unitality and associativity are not required to be isomorphisms but merely transformations in a particular direction. In previous work, we showed that the free skew monoidal category on a set of generating objects can be concretely presented as a sequent calculus. This calculus enjoys cut elimination and admits focusing, i.e. a subsystem of canonical derivations, which solves the coherence problem for skew monoidal categories. In this paper, we develop sequent calculi for partially normal skew monoidal categories, which are skew monoidal categories with one or more structural laws invertible. Each normality condition leads to additional inference rules and equations on them. We prove cut elimination and we show that the calculi admit focusing. The result is a family of sequent calculi between those of skew monoidal categories and (fully normal) monoidal categories. Abstract: In this paper, we develop the proof theory of skew prounital closed categories. These are variants of the skew closed categories of Street where the unit is not represented. Skew closed categories in turn are a weakening of the closed categories of Eilenberg and Kelly where no structural law is required to be invertible. The presence of a monoidal structure in these categories is not required. We construct several equivalent presentations of the free skew prounital closed category on a given set of generating objects: a categorical calculus (Hilbert-style system), a cut-free sequent calculus and a natural deduction system corresponding to a variant of planar (= non-commutative linear) typed lambda-calculus. We solve the coherence problem for skew prounital closed categories by showing that the sequent calculus admits focusing and presenting two reduction-free normalization procedures for the natural deduction calculus: normalization by evaluation and hereditary substitutions. Normal natural deduction derivations (beta-eta-long forms) are in one-to-one correspondence with derivations in the focused sequent calculus. Unexpectedly, the free skew prounital closed category on a set satisfies a left-normality condition which makes it lose its skew aspect. This pitfall can be avoided by considering the free skew prounital closed category on a skew multicategory instead. The latter has a presentation as a cut-free sequent calculus for which it is easy to see that the left-normality condition generally fails. Abstract: Light-absorbing carbonaceous aerosols emitted by biomass or fossil fuel combustion can contribute to amplify Arctic climate warming by lowering the albedo of snow. The Svalbard archipelago, being near to Europe and Russia, is particularly affected by these pollutants, and improved knowledge of their distribution in snow is needed to assess their impact. Here we present and synthesize new data obtained on Svalbard between 2007 and 2018, comprising 324 measurements of elemental (EC) and organic carbon (OC) in snow from 49 sites. We used these data, combined with meteorological and aerosol data and snowpack modelling, to investigate the variability of EC and OC deposition in Svalbard snow across latitude, longitude, elevation and time. Overall, EC concentrations (CsnowEC) ranged from −1, while OC concentrations (CsnowOC) ranged from −1, with the highest values observed near Ny-Ålesund. Calculated snowpack loadings (LsnowEC, LsnowOC) in April 2016 were 0.1 to 16.2 mg m−2 and 1.7 to 320.1 mg m−2, respectively. The median CsnowEC and LsnowEC in the late 2015‒16 winter snowpack on glaciers were close to or lower than those found in earlier (2007–09), comparable surveys. Both LsnowEC and LsnowOCC increased exponentially with elevation and snow accumulation, with dry deposition likely playing a minor role. Estimated area-averaged snowpack loads across Svalbard were 1.8 mg EC m−2 and 71.5 mg OC m−2 in April 2016. An ~ 11-year long dataset of spring surface snow measurements from central Brøgger Peninsula was used to quantify the interannual variability of EC and OC deposition in snow. On average, CsnowEC and CsnowOC at Ny-Ålesund (50 m a.s.l.) were 3 and 7 times higher, respectively, than on the nearby Austre Brøggerbreen glacier (456 m a.s.l.), and the median EC/OC in Ny-Ålesund was 6 times higher, pointing to some local EC emission from Ny-Ålesund. While no long-term trends between 2011 and 2018 were found, CsnowEC and CsnowOC showed synchronous variations at Ny-Ålesund and Austre Brøggerbreen. Comparing CsnowEC at Austre Brøggerbreen with aerosol data from Zeppelin Observatory, we found that snowfall washout ratios between 10 and 300 predict a range of CsnowEC in agreement with that measured in surface snow. Together, results from this study and comparable surveys confirm the existence of a longitudinal gradient in EC deposition across the Arctic and sub-Arctic, with the lowest CsnowEC found in the western Arctic (Alaska, Yukon) and central Greenland, and the highest in northwestern Russia and Siberia.

Abstract: International audience; A large-scale experimental study has been conducted at the Coriolis Rotating Platform to investigate the dynamics of uni- and bi-directional exchange flows along a channel with a trapezoidal cross section under the influence of background rotation. High-resolution two-dimensional particle image velocimetry and micro-conductivity probes were used to obtain detailed velocity fields and density profiles of the exchange flow generated across the channel under different parametric conditions. Experimental measurements give new insight into the stratified-flow dynamics dependence on the magnitude of Burger number, defined as the ratio of the Rossby radius to the channel width, such that values lower than 0.5 characterize unsteady exchange flows. The measurements highlight the role that both ambient rotation and net-barotropic forcing have on the geostrophic adjustment of the dense outflowing layer and on the corresponding counter-flowing water layer fluxes. The coupled effect of these two parametric conditions largely affects the transverse velocity distribution and, for the largest net-barotropic flow in the upper fresh water layer, leads to the partial blockage of the lower saline outflow. Moreover, an increase in the mixing layer thickness, associated with larger rotation rates, and due the interface dynamics, is observed, with shear-driven interfacial instabilities analyzed to highlight the influence of both ambient rotation and net-barotropic forcing

Abstract: Earthworms are an important soil taxon as ecosystem engineers, providing a variety of crucial ecosystem functions and services. Little is known about their diversity and distribution at large spatial scales, despite the availability of considerable amounts of local-scale data. Earthworm diversity data, obtained from the primary literature or provided directly by authors, were collated with information on site locations, including coordinates, habitat cover, and soil properties. Datasets were required, at a minimum, to include abundance or biomass of earthworms at a site. Where possible, site-level species lists were included, as well as the abundance and biomass of individual species and ecological groups. This global dataset contains 10,840 sites, with 184 species, from 60 countries and all continents except Antarctica. The data were obtained from 182 published articles, published between 1973 and 2017, and 17 unpublished datasets. The region experiences rapid variations in atmospheric flow during the snow season (from late September to May) and can be affected by air advected from both lower and higher latitudes, which likely impact the chemical composition of snowfall. While long-term changes in Svalbard snow chemistry have been documented in ice cores drilled from two high-elevation glaciers, the spatial variability of the snowpack composition across Svalbard is comparatively poorly understood. Here, we report the results of the most comprehensive seasonal snow chemistry survey to date, carried out in April 2016 across 22 sites on seven glaciers across the archipelago. At each glacier, three snowpits were sampled along the altitudinal profiles and the collected samples were analysed for major ions (Ca2+, K+, Na+, Mg2+, NH4+, SO42-, Br−, Cl−, and NO3-) and stable water isotopes (δ18O, δ2H). The main aims were to investigate the natural and anthropogenic processes influencing the snowpack and to better understand the influence of atmospheric aerosol transport and deposition patterns on the snow chemical composition. The snow deposited in the southern region of Svalbard is characterized by the highest total ionic loads, mainly attributed to sea-salt particles. Both NO3- and NH4+ in the seasonal snowpack reflect secondary aerosol formation and post-depositional changes, resulting in very different spatial deposition patterns: NO3- has its highest loading in north-western Spitsbergen and NH4+ in the south-west. The Br− enrichment in snow is highest in north-eastern glacier sites closest to areas of extensive sea-ice coverage. Spatial correlation patterns between Na+ and δ18O suggest that the influence of long-range transport of aerosols on snow chemistry is proportionally greater above 600–700 m a.s.l.

Abstract: Recently, graph clustering has become one of the most used techniques to understand structures and inherent knowledge in graph data. This trend progressively attracts the attention of companies and the research community. For example, in the industrial field, it is used for multiple applications like social networks (e.g. Facebook), where communities can be modeled as clusters in a graph. As for collaborative networks (e.g. DBLP), a cluster can represent a team with similar research interests. Several works have been established where their proposed approaches are based on advanced algorithms mainly graph clustering algorithms and modularity based-ones. The former has demonstrated their efficiency notably by providing supplementary information about clusters in a list. Besides, they can identify hub and outlier vertices. Despite their importance, the utility of such algorithms is limited by their high complexity particularly when dealing with Big and dynamic graphs. This limitation motivates us to propose new algorithms with higher performances in our thesis. For more details, our contributions can be summarized in the following points: (1) carrying out of a comparative study between the most popular Big Data platforms (2) proposing a distributed algorithm called DSCAN for large graphs clustering and (3) extending DSCAN to develop an incremental algorithm for dynamic and large graphs. A comparative study between our proposed algorithms and other baselines has shown their effectiveness and their scalability when dealing with large and dynamic graphs, Récemment, le clustering de graphes est devenu l’une des techniques les plus utilisées pour comprendre les structures et les connaissances cachées dans les graphes. Le clustering de graphes vise principalement à détecter tous les sous graphes denses dans un graphe donné. Un tel traitement peut toucher de nombreuses applications. Plus précisément, dans les réseaux sociaux (par exemple Facebook), les groupes dans un graphe peuvent être considérés comme étant des communautés. Dans un réseau de collaboration (par exemple DBLP), un cluster peut être un groupe de chercheurs ayant des intérêts de recherche similaires. C’est dans ce contexte que se situe le travail de cette thèse, il consiste à traiter le clustering de grands graphes dynamiques où ce projet de thèse touche plusieurs aspects tels que, le volume massif de données, le traitement des flux des données en plus des mises à jour de graphes en temps réel. De ce fait, dans cette thèse trois contributions sont proposées. La première contribution consiste à effectuer une étude comparative aussi bien théorique que technique entre les plateformes les plus populaires de Big Data notamment : Hadoop, Spark, Samza et Flink. La deuxième contribution consiste à proposer un algorithme distribué pour le clustering de grands graphes. L’algorithme proposé se base sur le clustering structurel. Une étude comparative avec d’autres algorithmes similaires a été effectuée dont l’objectif de montrer l’efficacité de l’algorithme proposé. Les résultats expérimentaux relevés ont affirmé cette efficacité particulièrement dans le passage à l’échelle. La dernière contribution était de proposer un algorithme de clustering de graphes dynamiques. Dans cette contribution, un algorithme incrémental a été proposé pour combattre le problème de temps de calcule de graphes larges et dynamiques, puisque avec les autres algorithmes chaque mis à jour appliquée sur le graphe initial nécessite de refaire le clustering de le début. Une étude comparative entre l’algorithme proposé et d’autres algorithmes a montré l’efficacité de l’algorithme proposé.

Abstract: Environmental pollution with chiral organic compounds is an emerging problem requiring innovative sensing methods. Amino-functionalized thioureas, such as 2-(dimethylamino)cyclohexyl-(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)thiourea (Takemoto’s catalyst), are widely used organocatalysts with virtually unknown environmental safety data. Ecotoxicity studies based on the Vibrio fischeri luminescence inhibition test reveal significant toxicity of Takemoto’s catalyst (EC50 = 7.9 mg/L) and its NH2-substituted analog (EC50 = 7.2–7.4 mg/L). The observed toxic effect was pronounced by the influence of the trifluoromethyl moiety. En route to the porphyrin-based chemosensing of Takemoto-type thioureas, their supramolecular binding to a series of zinc porphyrins was studied with UV-Vis and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, computational analysis and single crystal X-ray diffraction. The association constant values generally increased with the increasing electron-withdrawing properties of the porphyrins and electron-donating ability of the thioureas, a result of the predominant Zn⋯N cation–dipole (Lewis acid–base) interaction. The binding event induced a CD signal in the Soret band region of the porphyrin hosts—a crucial property for chirality sensing of Takemoto-type thioureas.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, a new methodology for choosing design parameters of level-crossing analog-to-digital converters (LC-ADCs) is presented that improves sampling accuracy and reduces the data stream rate. Using the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia dataset, several LC-ADC models are designed, simulated and then evaluated in terms of compression and signal-to-distortion ratio. A new one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) based classifier is presented. The 1D-CNN is used to evaluate the event-driven data from several LC-ADC models. With uniformly sampled data, the 1D-CNN has 99.49%, 92.4% and 94.78% overall accuracy, sensitivity and specificity, respectively. In comparison, a 7-bit LC-ADC with 2385Hz clock frequency and 6-bit clock resolution offers 99.2%, 89.98% and 91.64% overall accuracy, sensitivity and specificity, respectively. It also offers 3x data compression while maintaining a signal-to-distortion ratio of 21.19dB. Furthermore, it only requires 49% floating-point operations per second (FLOPS) for cardiac arrhythmia classification in comparison with the uniformly sampled ADC. Finally, an open-source event-driven arrhythmia database is presented.

Abstract: part : TC 1: Foundations of Computer Science; International audience; Signal flow graphs are combinatorial models for linear dynamical systems, playing a foundational role in control theory and engineering. In this survey, we overview a series of works [3, 10, 11, 13, 15–18, 31, 51, 63] that develop a compositional theory of these structures, and explore several striking insights emerging from this approach. In particular, the use of string diagrams, a categorical syntax for graphical models, allows to switch from the traditional combinatorial treatment of signal flow graphs to an algebraic characterisation. Within this framework, signal flow graphs may then be treated as a fully-fledged (visual) programming language, and equipped with important meta-theoretical properties, such as a complete axiomatisation and a full abstraction theorem. Moreover, the abstract viewpoint offered by string diagrams reveals that the same algebraic structures modelling linear dynamical systems may also be used to interpret diverse kinds of models, such as electrical circuits and Petri nets.In this respect, our work is a contribution to compositional network theory (see e.g., [1, 2, 4–6, 9, 12, 20, 21, 23, 24, 26, 28–30, 32, 37, 49, 59], ?), an emerging multidisciplinary research programme aiming at a uniform compositional study of different sorts of computational models.

Abstract: International audience; The design of a robust perception method is a substantial component towards achieving underwater human–robot collaboration. However, in complex environments such as the oceans, perception is still a challenging issue. Data‐fusion of different sensing modalities can improve perception in dynamic and unstructured ocean environments. This study addresses the control of a highly maneuverable autonomous underwater vehicle for diver tracking based on visual and acoustic signals data fusion measured by low‐cost sensors. The underwater vehicle U‐CAT tracks a diver using a 3‐degree‐of‐freedom fuzzy logic Mamdani controller. The proposed tracking approach was validated through open water real‐time experiments. Combining acoustic and visual signals for underwater target tracking provides several advantages compared to previously done related research. The obtained results suggest that the proposed solution ensures effective detection and tracking in poor visibility operating conditions.

Three of them represents sector of higher education and four are schools located in the neighbour of the technical university. Unfortunately, in recent years number of candidates entering to technical universities (particularly in Europe) decreases. Partners exchange ideas how to increase number of students who starts education in technical area. Another project goal is to examine possibilities how the university can contribute in increasing quality of technical education at schools. Main project ideas and results of project activities are reported in the paper.

The cause–effect relationships between chemical exposure and female reproductive disorders, however, have proven problematic to determine. This has made it difficult to assess the risks chemical exposures pose to a woman’s reproductive development and function. To address this challenge, this review uses the adverse outcome pathway (AOP) concept to summarize current knowledge about how chemical exposure can affect female reproductive health. We have a special focus on effects on the ovaries, since they are essential for lifelong reproductive health in women, being the source of both oocytes and several reproductive hormones, including sex steroids. The AOP framework is widely accepted as a new tool for toxicological safety assessment that enables better use of mechanistic knowledge for regulatory purposes. AOPs equip assessors and regulators with a pragmatic network of linear cause–effect relationships, enabling the use of a wider range of test method data in chemical risk assessment and regulation. Based on current knowledge, we propose ten putative AOPs relevant for female reproductive disorders that can be further elaborated and potentially be included in the AOPwiki. This effort is an important step towards better safeguarding the reproductive health of all girls and women.

Abstract: We report Peacock&ndash, Weakley complexes, Na9[Ln(W5O18)2]∙35H2O, formed with Tm(III), 1, and Yb(III), 2. Their syntheses, physico-chemical characterizations, crystal structures, and magnetic properties are described. Ab initio calculations are also reported. These polyoxometalate (POM) complexes were obtained using original synthetic conditions where acidification was performed with a stoichiometric amount of nitric acid to an acidity of Z = &nu, (H+)/&nu, (WO42&ndash, ) = 8/10 = 0.80. Both the Tm(III) and Yb(III) derivatives were found to exhibit field-induced slow relaxation of their magnetization likely controlled by Raman and Orbach relaxation processes. 1 is a rare example of a Tm(III)-based single-molecule magnet (SMM) and is a consequence of the oblate tetragonal anti-prismatic symmetry of the coordination sphere.

Abstract: Part 2: E-Government Services and Open Government; International audience; This paper discusses challenges and obstacles of the Estonian customs authority while implementing the new EU VAT directive aiming to raise efficiency in the VAT declaration life-cycle. The general goal of the directive is to reduce cross-border fraud, gain revenue and modernize the system for governments and businesses. Due to the fact that the impact of the new VAT directive is tremendous, it also changes radically AS-IS work routines of customs authorities. The current paper presents the Estonian experience regarding the implementation of the new work procedures through providing data of the new technology developments and bringing out main concerns in terms of ongoing development activities. Transforming old ICT systems to newer platforms with regards to the new directive also changes current work procedures, which means that adjustments in the organization are also required. The central reason to move towards automatization is the dramatically increasing volumes of shipments requiring customs clearance. However, it is a complex process to achieve this task because of different or non-agreed data sets shared in the existing systems by various stakeholders as well as low quality of data. Consequently, the results of the paper are aimed to aid implementing the changes in various other customs authorities in the EU.

Abstract: Part 2: Digital Transformation; International audience; Countries are struggling to develop data exchange infrastructures needed to reap the benefits of e-government. Understanding the development of infrastructures can only be achieved by combining insights from institutional, technical and process perspectives. This paper contributes by analysing data exchange infrastructures in the Netherlands and Estonia from an integral perspective. The institutional design framework of Koppenjan and Groenewegen is used to analyse the developments in both countries. The analysis shows that the starting points, cultures, path dependencies and institutional structure result in different governance models for data exchange infrastructures. Estonia has a single – centrally governed – data-exchange infrastructure that is used by public and private parties for all kinds of data exchanges (including citizen-to-business and business-to-business). In contrast, the institutional structure in the Netherlands demands a strict demarcation between public and private infrastructures, resulting in several data exchange infrastructures. While there are examples of sharing infrastructure components across various levels of the Dutch government, public infrastructures cannot be used for business-to-business or citizen-to-business data exchange due to the potential for market distortion by government. Both the centrally governed Estonian model and the decentrally governed Dutch model have pros and cons on multiple levels.

Abstract: Online ahead of print; International audience; Each year breast-cancer (BC) is the most common invasive cancer in women, causing a considerable death rate. Given that, BC is classified as a hormone-dependent cancer, when it collides with pregnancy, different questions may arise for which there are still no convincing answers. To deal with this issue, two new frameworks are proposed within this paper: CORAM and DIST-CORAM. The former is the first unified framework dedicated to the extraction of a generic basis of Correlated-Rare association rules from gene expression data. The proposed approach has been successfully applied on a breast-cancer Gene Expression Matrix (GSE1379) with very promising results. The latter, the DIST-CORAM approach, is a big-data processing system based on Apache spark, which deals with correlation mining from streams of micro-array pregnancy associated breast-cancer (PABC). It is successfully applied on the (GSE31192) gene expression matrix (GEM). The correlated patterns of gene-sets affirm that PABC exhibits heightened aggressiveness compared to cancers for Non-PABC women. In fact, the high levels of estrogen and progesterone hormones unfortunately contribute to the tumor aggressiveness and the proliferation of the cancer.

Abstract: International audience; This paper presents a condensed review of the European smart body area network (BAN) standardization work and its already published standards. The work is carried out under the ETSI Technical Committee (TC) SmartBAN. The goal of ETSI TC SmartBAN is to define and develop new European BAN standards; fostering the successful market adoption of wireless BAN technology by providing a standardized way to bring new interoperable products into the health, medical, sport, leisure and IoT markets, targeting to global exploitation. TC SmartBAN covers wireless communications, especially the physical and medium access control layers, associated security, semantic interoperability and open data representation, which are necessary features in the data transmissions, as well as building blocks of the future smart coordinator. The use of smart coordinator centralizes the network intelligence to the hub, which enables implementation of simple nodes. The SmartBAN approach will be computationally light, and it supports reliable operations across heterogeneous networks. Due to the semantic approach in all functional levels, SmartBAN also supports high interoperability. For emergency traffic, SmartBAN provides different priority classes and fast channel access associated with a low latency. Novel concept adopted in the SmartBAN for high-priority traffic is a multi-use channel access, which can also improve the spectral efficiency. Not only on-body nodes and applications, TC SmartBAN is considering in-body communications for capsule endoscopy. In addition, SmartBAN collaborates with other standardization groups, such as oneM2M and AIOTI, to widen the impact of its work.

Abstract: In this paper we demonstrate methods for reliable and efficient training of discrete representation using Vector-Quantized Variational Auto-Encoder models (VQ-VAEs). Discrete latent variable models have been shown to learn nontrivial representations of speech, applicable to unsupervised voice conversion and reaching state-of-the-art performance on unit discovery tasks. For unsupervised representation learning, they became viable alternatives to continuous latent variable models such as the Variational Auto-Encoder (VAE). However, training deep discrete variable models is challenging, due to the inherent non-differentiability of the discretization operation. In this paper we focus on VQ-VAE, a state-of-the-art discrete bottleneck model shown to perform on par with its continuous counterparts. It quantizes encoder outputs with on-line $k$-means clustering. We show that the codebook learning can suffer from poor initialization and non-stationarity of clustered encoder outputs. We demonstrate that these can be successfully overcome by increasing the learning rate for the codebook and periodic date-dependent codeword re-initialization. As a result, we achieve more robust training across different tasks, and significantly increase the usage of latent codewords even for large codebooks. This has practical benefit, for instance, in unsupervised representation learning, where large codebooks may lead to disentanglement of latent representations., Published at IJCNN 2020

Abstract: Logical Methods in Computer Science ; Volume 16, Issue 3 ; 1860-5974, We demonstrate that the most well-known approach to rewriting graphical structures, the Double-Pushout (DPO) approach, possesses a notion of sequential compositions of rules along an overlap that is associative in a natural sense. Notably, our results hold in the general setting of $\mathcal{M}$-adhesive categories. This observation complements the classical Concurrency Theorem of DPO rewriting. We then proceed to define rule algebras in both settings, where the most general categories permissible are the finitary (or finitary restrictions of) $\mathcal{M}$-adhesive categories with $\mathcal{M}$-effective unions. If in addition a given such category possess an $\mathcal{M}$-initial object, the resulting rule algebra is unital (in addition to being associative). We demonstrate that in this setting a canonical representation of the rule algebras is obtainable, which opens the possibility of applying the concept to define and compute the evolution of statistical moments of observables in stochastic DPO rewriting systems.

Abstract: International audience; This article argues that the transformation of the development paradigm into the sustainability discourse introduces the prospect of establishing strategic partnerships for addressing one of our most pressing global issues. The strategic partnerships would facilitate multi-level cooperative social action that would contribute to improving the quality of multi-level social relations. Thus, the strategic partnerships would contribute to the sustainability discourse by establishing a means of cooperating to protect one of the greatest values shared by humanity-the natural environment. The article argues that applying the concepts and principles connected with sustainability in the Asian-Pacific would make evident the complementary connection between social-economic flourishing, eco-justice, and cooperative interstate activity. This article contributes to the literature addressing the factors that shape the global arena by explaining how the sustainability discourse transforms the established approach to development into the prospect of cooperative strategic partnerships in the Asian-Pacific.

Abstract: International audience; The paper is focused on new educational activities focused on attracting young people for technical education. The idea is based on realization of the project under Erasmus+ Strategic Partnership (Key Action 2). The project based on exchange of good practices involves seven partners. Three of them represents sector of higher education and four are schools located in the neighbor of the technical university. Partners exchange ideas how to increase number of students who starts education in technical area, which seems a bit difficult, but engineers are very expected by the industry. The second project goal is to examine possibilities how the university can contribute in increasing quality of technical education at schools. Main project ideas and results of realized project activities are reported in the paper.

Abstract: The Eilenberg-Kelly theorem states that a category C with an object I and two functors ⊗ : C × C → C and ⊸ : C op × C → C related by an adjunction − ⊗ B ⊣ B ⊸ − natural in B is monoidal iff it is closed and moreover the adjunction holds internally. We dissect the proof of this theorem and observe that the necessity for a side condition on closedness arises because the standard definition of closed category is left-skew in regards to associativity. We analyze Street's observation that left-skew monoidality is equivalent to left-skew closedness and establish that monoidality is equivalent to closedness unconditionally under an adjusted definition of closedness that requires normal associativity. We also work out a definition of right-skew closedness equivalent to right-skew monoidality. We give examples of each type of structure; in particular, we look at the Kleisli category of a left-strong monad on a left-skew closed category and the Kleisli category of a lax closed monad on a right-skew closed category. We also view skew and normal monoidal and closed categories as special cases of skew and normal promonoidal categories and take a brief look at left-skew prounital-closed categories.

Abstract: International audience; Currently available test methods are not well-suited for the identification of chemicals that disturb hormonal processes involved in female reproductive development and function. This renders women's reproductive health at increasing risk globally, which, coupled with increasing incidence rates of reproductive disorders, is of great concern. A woman's reproductive health is largely established during embryonic and fetal development and subsequently matures during puberty. The endocrine system influences development, maturation, and function of the female reproductive system, thereby making appropriate hormone levels imperative for correct functioning of reproductive processes. It is concerning that the effects of human-made chemicals on the endocrine system and female reproductive health are poorly addressed in regulatory chemical safety assessment, partly because adequate test methods are lacking. Our EU-funded project FREIA aims to address this need by increasing understanding of how endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) can impact female reproductive health. We will use this information to provide better test methods that enable fit-for-purpose chemical regulation and then share our knowledge, promote a sustainable society, and improve the reproductive health of women globally.

Abstract: International audience; Tree architecture has evolved to support a top-heavy above-ground biomass, but this integral feature poses a weight-induced challenge to trunk stability. Maintaining an upright stem is expected to require vertical proprioception through feedback between sensing stem weight and responding with radial growth. Despite its apparent importance, the principle by which plant stems respond to vertical loading forces remains largely unknown. Here, by manipulating the stem weight of downy birch (Betula pubescens) trees, we show that cambial development is modulated systemically along the stem. We carried out a genetic study on the underlying regulation by combining an accelerated birch flowering program with a recessive mutation at the ELIMAKI locus (EKI), which causes a mechanically defective response to weight stimulus resulting in stem collapse after just 3 months. We observed delayed wood morphogenesis in eki compared with WT, along with a more mechanically elastic cambial zone and radial compression of xylem cell size, indicating that rapid tissue differentiation is critical for cambial growth under mechanical stress. Furthermore, the touch-induced mechanosensory pathway was transcriptionally misregulated in eki, indicating that the ELIMAKI locus is required to integrate the weight-growth feedback regulation. By studying this birch mutant, we were able to dissect vertical proprioception from the gravitropic response associated with reaction wood formation. Our study provides evidence for both local and systemic responses to mechanical stimuli during secondary plant development.

Abstract: Part 1: Block Chain; International audience; Public procurement constitutes a core government function for providing goods and services to citizens. The overall success of a digitized public-procurement function yields progress and economic growth for the nation. In this research, we analyze the potential of blockchain-based systems to enhance effectiveness, ease, and transparency in public procurement in the case of Nigeria and identify the current challenges facing public procurement, i.e., lack of trust and transparency among critical stakeholders in the procurement process, systems that only weakly support transaction recording and documentation, complex process structures, corruption in institutions involved in the procurement process. To address these issues, a blockchain-based framework is developed to enable interoperability of information-systems involved in the procurement process, increase citizen participation in eliciting project requirements and to enable a more transparent project monitoring and auditing. We apply the framework to a case study with respect to identifying on-chain activities that enable system interoperability, e-participation and project auditability.

Abstract: Wildfire occurrence is influenced by climate, vegetation and human activities. A key challenge for understanding the risk of fires is quantifying the mediating effect of vegetation on fire regimes. Here, we explore the relative importance of Holocene land cover, land use, dominant functional forest type, and climate dynamics on biomass burning in temperate and boreo-nemoral regions of central and eastern Europe over the past 12 kyr. We used an extensive data set of Holocene pollen and sedimentary charcoal records, in combination with climate simulations and statistical modelling. Biomass burning was highest during the early Holocene and lowest during the mid-Holocene in all three ecoregions (Atlantic, continental and boreo-nemoral) but was more spatially variable over the past 3–4 kyr. Although climate explained a significant variance in biomass burning during the early Holocene, tree cover was consistently the highest predictor of past biomass burning over the past 8 kyr. In temperate forests, biomass burning was high at ∼45 % tree cover and decreased to a minimum at between 60 % and 70 % tree cover. In needleleaf-dominated forests, biomass burning was highest at ∼ 60 %–65 % tree cover and steeply declined at >65 % tree cover. Biomass burning also increased when arable lands and grasslands reached ∼ 15 %–20 %, although this relationship was variable depending on land use practice via ignition sources, fuel type and quantities. Higher tree cover reduced the amount of solar radiation reaching the forest floor and could provide moister, more wind-protected microclimates underneath canopies, thereby decreasing fuel flammability. Tree cover at which biomass burning increased appears to be driven by warmer and drier summer conditions during the early Holocene and by increasing human influence on land cover during the late Holocene. We suggest that long-term fire hazard may be effectively reduced through land cover management, given that land cover has controlled fire regimes under the dynamic climates of the Holocene.
