Este texto traz informações de forma contextualizada sobre o Povo Truká e sua relação com a Caatinga. Todavia, esta dinâmica tem como princípio a convivência comunitária, em busca de autonomia para construção de espaços para convivência e preservação, através da proposição de políticas públicas. Esses espaços fazem parte do patrimônio material e imaterial do universo religioso do povo Truká e possuem um papel importante na vivência cultural deste povo. Trazemos os discursos sobre emergência étnica no Nordeste, suas características e procedências, tendo a luta dos Truká e outros povos como essenciais para esse movimento que permeia a construção de identidades. ABSTRACT This text provides contextualized information about the Truká People and their relationship with the Caatinga. However, this dynamic has as its principle community coexistence, in search of autonomy to build spaces for coexistence and preservation, through the proposition of public policies. These spaces are part of the material and immaterial heritage of the religious universe of the Truká people and play an important role in the cultural experience of this people. We bring the discourses on ethnic emergence in the Northeast, its characteristics and origins, having the struggle of the Truká and other peoples as essential for this movement that permeates the construction of identities. Semi-arid regions are known for erratic precipitation patterns with significant effects on the hydrological cycle and water resources availability. High temporal and spatial variation in precipitation causes large variability in runoff over short durations. Due to low soil water storage capacity, base flow is often missing and rivers fall dry for long periods. Because of its climatic characteristics, the semi-arid north-eastern region of Brazil is prone to droughts. To counter these, reservoirs were built to ensure water supply during dry months. This paper describes problems and solutions when calibrating and validating the eco-hydrological model SWIM for semi-arid regions on the example of the Pajeú watershed in north-eastern Brazil. The model was calibrated to river discharge data before the year 1983, with no or little effects of water management, applying a simple and an enhanced approach. Uncertainties result mainly from the meteorological data and observed river discharges. After model calibration water management was included in the simulations. Observed and simulated reservoir volumes and river discharges are compared. The calibrated and validated models were used to simulate the impacts of climate change on hydrological processes and water resources management using data of two representative concentration pathways (RCP) and five earth system models (ESM). The differences in changes in natural and managed mean discharges are negligible ( 5%) under RCP2.6 for the ESM ensemble mean. In semi-arid catchments, the enhanced approach should be preferred, because in addition to discharge, a second variable, here evapotranspiration, is considered for model validation., BMBF Germany, BMGF Germany

Objetivo: analisar o polimorfismo genético de GSTP1 localizado no cromossomo 11.q13.2, exon 5 (Ile105Val) e associar a marcadores de estresse oxidativo e infecção por HPV. Métodos: o DNA foi extraído de raspados cervicais para identificação do HPV por PCR e genotipagem utilizando HPV-Screening PapilloCheck® e de sangue total para análise do polimorfismo por RFLP-PCR. O estresse oxidativo foi analisado através dos níveis séricos das espécies reativas ao ácido tiobarbitúrico, grupos carbonil, grupos tiol e atividade da catalase. Resultados: 75% das mulheres HPV positivas apresentaram infecções simples e os tipos virais 16 e 45 foram mais frequentes. 56,25% das mulheres apresentaram o genótipo variante Ile105Val GSTP1 (Ile/Val ou Val/Val) com prevalência de heterozigotos (43,75%). Entre as mulheres HPV positivas, a presença do variante alélico levou a um maior risco de desenvolver lesões cervicais (OR = 29,44). Mulheres infectadas com HPV (especialmente de alto risco) apresentaram menor atividade da catalase e aumento dos grupos carbonila. Considerando a presença dos genótipos variantes Ile/Val e Val/Val, as mulheres infectadas apresentaram aumento dos marcadores de estresse oxidativo e as mulheres HPV negativas apresentaram diminuição da capacidade antioxidante. Conclusão: estes achados sugerem uma possível influência do genótipo variante GSTP1 no aumento do estresse oxidativo e suscetibilidade a lesões cervicais em mulheres infectadas com HPV.Palavras-chave: gstp1; espécies reativas de oxigênio; hpv; lesão cervical.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------AbstractObjective: to analyze the genetic polymorphism of GSTP1 located on chromosome 11q13.2 exon 5 (Ile105Val) and its association with oxidative stress markers and HPV infection. Methods: DNA were extracted from cervical scrapes for HPV identification by PCR, genotyping using HPV-Screening PapilloCheck®, and from whole blood for analysis of polymorphisms by RFLP-PCR. Oxidative stress was analyzed by measuring the serum levels of thiobarbituric acid reactive species, carbonyl groups, thiol groups, and catalase activity. Results: of all HPV-positive women, 75% had simple infections. Viral types 16 and 45 were the most frequent. A total of 56.25% of women had variant Ile105Val GSTP1 genotype (Ile/Val or Val/Val) with a heterozygous prevalence (43.75%). Among the HPV-positive women, the presence of the allelic variant led to a higher risk of developing cervical lesions (OR = 29.44). Women infected with HPV (especially the high-risk type) showed lower catalase activity and an increase in carbonyl groups. Considering the presence of variant genotypes Ile/Val and Val/Val, the infected women presented an increase in some oxidative stress markers, and HPV-negative women showed a decreased antioxidant capacity. Conclusion: these results indicate the potential influence of variant GSTP1 genotype on increased oxidative stress and susceptibility to cervical lesions in women infected with HPV.Keywords: gstp1; reactive oxygen species; HPV; cervical injury.

Este artigo tem por objetivo verificar por meio dos relatórios financeiros e não financeiros, como os itens sobre provisões e passivos contingentes têm sido divulgados pelos 20 melhores clubes esportivos brasileiros no período entre 2014 e 2018, listados pelo ranking nacional da Confederação Brasileira de Futebol (CBF), e se esta evidenciação está em conformidade com o padrão estabelecido pelo Comitê de Pronunciamentos Contábeis (CPC) 25 em complemento à Instrução Técnica Geral (ITG) 2003 (R1). Quanto ao objetivo estabelecido, o estudo caracteriza-se como descritivo e documental, no que concerne à abordagem do problema e natureza dos dados é misto ou híbrido. A coleta de dados deu-se mediante busca dos relatórios disponibilizados nos sites dos clubes analisados e contou com um checklist para análise. Analisou-se a frequência relativa observada de cada apontamento (S “Sim”, NN “Não Divulgado”, NI “Não Informado” e NA “Não se Aplica”) por clube e ano analisado, e, consequentemente, com os resultados tabulados, realizou-se a aplicação de dois indicadores para quantificar o nível de aderência dos clubes, sendo um índice estrito e um índice tolerante. Os resultados apontam desconformidade na qualidade de evidenciação das provisões e contingências passivas para a maioria das entidades. Contudo, percebeu-se que a média anual de conformidade e qualidade da evidenciação nos clubes analisados é crescente.

Entender a influência da inveja, Bem-Estar Subjetivo e Saúde Mental nas relações interpessoais, sociais e profissionais nas instituições de ensino tem se tornado de grande relevância. Este estudo teve por objetivo verificar se o bem-estar subjetivo e a saúde mental atuam como preditores da inveja em professores de Instituição de Ensino Superior Pública. A amostra foi composta por 101 mulheres e 75 homens, com idade média de 32,35 anos (DP = 5,144). A coleta dos dados ocorreu por meio de um questionário de autopreenchimento composto por questões sociodemográficas e de Escala Disposicional de Inveja (DES), Escala de Bem-estar subjetivo (EBES), e a Escala de Saúde mental - SF36. A correlação Pearson demostrou que a inveja é positiva e moderadamente correlacionada com afeto negativo e negativamente com a satisfação com a vida, afeto positivo, vitalidade e saúde mental. Além disso, a análise de regressão múltipla mostrou que Afeto Negativo [F (1,174) = 35.36; p = .001] e Satisfação com a Vida [F (1,173) = 6.068; p = .015] são preditores de inveja. Os resultados sugerem que pessoas invejosas apresentam afetos negativos e possuem uma menor satisfação com a vida. Palavras-chaves: Inveja. Bem-estar Subjetivo. Saúde Mental. Docente. ABSTRACT Understanding the influence of envy, Subjective Well-Being and Mental Health on interpersonal, social and professional relationships in educational institutions has become of great relevance. This study aimed to verify whether subjective well-being and mental health act as predictors of envy in teachers of a Public Higher Education Institution. The sample consisted of 101 women and 75 men, with an average age of 32.35 years (SD = 5.144). Data collection took place through a self-administered questionnaire composed of sociodemographic questions and those of the Disjunctive Scale of Envy (DES), the subjective Wellbeing Scale (EBES), and the Mental Health Scale - SF36. The Pearson correlation demonstrated that envy is positively and moderately correlated with negative affect and negatively with life satisfaction, positive affect, vitality and mental health. In addition, the multiple regression analysis showed that that Negative Affect [F (1,174) = 35.36; p = .001] and Life Satisfaction [F (1,173) = 6,068; p = .015] are predictors of envy. This paper discusses the creative process of the street performance Motim (Mutiny) (2015) from the perspective of laughter as a bio-potent performative action. We discuss how the relational thinking emerged within the framework of a process dramaturgy (Kerkhove, 1997), conceptualizing creative thinking as a network (Salles, 2006). The collaborative creative process of Motim started with three ways of approaching the act of laughing: physicality, memory and contagion. By focusing on contagion, we will discuss how relational thinking was installed in the creative process of Motim and was powered by the investigative aspect of laughter as contagion., C’article a pour but faire un etude du processus creatif de la perfomance Motim (Emeute) (2015), en discutent l’acte de rire comme un acte bio puissant et performatif. On aborde comme dans une dramaturgie en processus la pensee relationnelle a emerge pour la construction de la dramaturgie, dans une comprehension de la pensee creative comme un reseau (Salles, 2006). Le processus creatif et collaboratif de Motim a eu comme base trois parcours pour aborder le rire: la physicalite, la memoire et la contagion. En portant une attention particuliere sur la contagion, on discute comment la pensee relationnelle a ete presente dans le processus creatif de Motim et a ete potentialise par le sujet du rire comme contagion., O artigo traz uma reflexão sobre o processo de criação da montagem de rua intitulada Motim (2015), a partir do riso como ato biopotente e performativo. Parte-se da reflexão sobre como, em uma dramaturgia de processo (Kerkhove, 1997), deu-se o pensamento relacional para construção desta dramaturgia, conceitualizando o pensamento criativo como rede (Salles, 2006). A construção colaborativa de Motim partiu do riso através de três eixos investigativos: fisicalidade, memoria e contagio. Com ênfase no contagio, discute-se como o pensamento relacional abordado por Salles instaurou-se na montagem de Motim e se potencializou pelo eixo investigativo do riso como contagio.

Este estudo procura oferecer subsídios práticos para reflexões sobre a importância do trabalho de campo na formação de geógrafos. Como realidade objetiva, toma-se por base uma experiência vivenciada durante o segundo semestre letivo de 2013, no curso de Geografia do Centro de Estudos Superiores de Imperatriz, da Universidade Estadual do Maranhão, na disciplina Prática: Experimentação em Cartografia. Utilizou-sede um vasto referencial teórico, abordando principalmente os conceitos de lugar e paisagem, aspectos físicos, econômicos e históricos da área de estudo e a teoria da comunicação cartográfica. Na abordagem do lugar, foram utilizadas conversas informais com moradores, sendo feitas algumas anotações dos depoimentos dos mesmos. Na abordagem da paisagem, foram utilizados mapas de hipsometria e uso da terra, fotografias e observações in loco. Destacam-se as contribuições na formação dos futuros geógrafos, pois eles tiveram a oportunidade de experimentar na prática os conceitos de lugar e paisagem, conhecer um pouco da história de vida de alguns moradores, vivenciar o cotidiano destes moradores e interpretar, na prática, mapas temáticos produzidos por integrantes do LabCartE (Laboratório de Cartografia e Ensino). Atividades dessa natureza contribuem tanto para a formação acadêmica, quanto para a formação de cidadãos conscientes e participantes nas mudanças da sociedade. Entende-se que é na universidade que o acadêmico começa a vivenciar e praticar ciência, e ciência se faz com método. Portanto, o trabalho de campo deve ser realizado de forma consciente, tanto pelo professor coordenador quanto pelos alunos participantes. ABSTRACTThis study tries to offer practical subsidies for reflections on the importance of fieldwork in the training of geographers. As an objective reality, based on an experience during the second semester of 2013 in the Geography course of the Center for Higher Studies of Imperatriz, State University of Maranhão, in the discipline Practical: Experimentation in Cartography. A broad theoretical framework was used, focusing mainly on the concepts of place and landscape, physical, economic and historical aspects of the area of study and the theory of cartographic communication. In the approach of the place, informal conversations with residents were used, being made some notes of the testimonies of the same ones. In the landscape approach, maps of hypsometry and land use, photographs and in loco observations were used. We highlight the contributions in the training of future geographers, since they had the opportunity to experience the concepts of place and landscape in practice, to know a little of the life history of some residents, to experience the daily life of these residents and to interpret thematic maps in practice produced by members of the Laboratory of Cartography and Teaching. Activities of this nature contribute both to the academic formation and to the formation of conscious citizens and participants in the changes of society. It is understood that it is in the university that the academic begins to experience and practice science, and science is done with the method. Therefore, the fieldwork must be carried out in a conscious way, both by the coordinating teacher and by the participating students. The constant changes in the business scenario provided a greater dynamic in technological advances and environmental practices. In this segment, efficiently manage reverse logistics has become a key point. In this context, this study has the general objective to understand how it develops the reverse cycle of glass containers in a bottling drinks. To this end, the following specific objectives are established: a) describe the processes wrapped in reverse cycle, showing all materials and related initiatives; b) evidence that the reasons for an organization to implement reverse logistics in the study segment. The study was conducted a bottling of Pernambuco drinks sales is a reference in Brazil and worldwide. Therefore it was used as a method qualitative research. Data collection was undertaken through semi-structured interviews and observation. The results showed that applies bottler well structured RL practices, having an active and controlled chain reverse supply, which allows the reintroduction of the glass containers in the production process. Thus, the bottler can practically void waste and reduce environmental impacts. In addition, the organization recycles all materials linked to containers, namely, neck label and providing responsible environmental solutions. As constantes mudanças no cenário empresarial propiciaram uma dinâmica maior nos avanços tecnológicos e nas práticas ambientais. Neste segmento, gerenciar eficientemente a logística reversa tornou-se um ponto chave. Neste contexto, este estudo tem como objetivo geral compreender como se desenvolve o ciclo reverso dos vasilhames de vidro em uma engarrafadora de bebidas. Para tanto, estabeleceu-se os seguintes objetivos específicos: a) descrever os processos envoltos no ciclo reverso, evidenciando todos os materiais e iniciativas relacionadas; e b) evidenciar quais as motivações para uma organização implementar a logística reversa no segmento estudado. O estudo foi realizado uma engarrafadora de bebidas pernambucana que é referência de vendas no Brasil e no mundo. Para tanto utilizou-se como método a pesquisa qualitativa. A coleta de dados foi empreendida por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas e observação. Os resultados demonstraram que a engarrafadora aplica práticas de logística reversa bem estruturadas, tendo uma cadeia de suprimentos reversa ativa e controlada, a qual possibilita a reintrodução dos vasilhames de vidro no processo produtivo. Assim, a engarrafadora consegue praticamente anular os desperdícios e diminuir os impactos no meio ambiente. Além disso, a organização recicla todos os materiais atrelados aos vasilhames, quais sejam, gargalo e rótulo fornecendo soluções socioambientais responsáveis.

Esse artigo é parte de uma pesquisa pautada no referencial teórico e metodológico da Análise de Discurso Crítica, de Norman Fairclough, que almeja perceber as representações sobre anistia, assim como as disputas de poder e de sentido dos que militam na questão. Objetivamos com ele trazer a lume a o tratamento diferenciado dos demais militares que os anistiados recebendo Ministério da Defesa. O Ministério da Defesa interpreta que os militares anistiados devem se submeter a um regime jurídico específico e finda por suprimir direitos destes. Ocupamo-nos então por expor como é construído, dentro do Estado, esse discurso, demonstrando a construção da distinção que suprime direitos, a dignidade dos anistiados e, por que não dizer, o próprio sentido da anistia.

En este libro derivado de investigación, titulado Saber, Poder y Nuevas Formas de Lucha en Michel Foucault se sustenta que las investigaciones de Michel Foucault intentan desenmascarar el estatuto del sujeto moderno, el sujeto constituyente, para lo cual realiza desplazamientos permanentes que le permiten abrir su reflexión a una búsqueda que concluye con la propuesta de una ética como arte de vivir que emerge como un ejercicio de resistencia al poder político y a los mecanismos de sujeción en Occidente. El poder y la resistencia son preocupaciones constantes que aparecen a lo largo de su itinerario filosófico de distintas formas. Sus elaboraciones sobre las relaciones de poder no lo llevan a plantear la imposibilidad de escapar a las relaciones de poder, a los micropoderes y macropoderes que regulan la vida. El pensador francés no hace la teorización de un poder esencialmente represivo del que es imposible escapar. La hipótesis que orienta este libro considera que Foucault responde a las preguntas ¿por qué resistir? ¿por qué oponerse a la sumisión? ¿por qué es preferible la lucha a la sumisión? sin introducir nociones normativas que permitan decir qué está mal en el moderno régimen de producción de la verdad y por qué oponerse a él. La problematización ética le permite al filósofo francés dar cuenta de la condición humana en la modernidad sin recurrir a un criptonormativismo autorreferencial.

The grated cheese is a food product, ready for consumption, commonly marketed in Brazil. However it is one of the products that have higher level of nonconformity for its microbiological quality, offering public health risks. The objective of this study was to evaluate the physicochemical and microbiological quality of grated cheeses. Samples of 19 brands of grated cheese produced in Brazil and sold in Recife-PE were collected in August 2013. The samples were packed and transported to the Experimental Laboratory of Food Analysis, Federal Rural University of Pernambuco. The results were compared with the decree n° 357/1997 of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply. Found that sixteen percent (16%) of the samples had levels of sorbic acid above those permitted by law, and forty-two percent (42%) of the samples had counts of yeasts and molds (fungi) above the accepted limit, but all marks showed compliance in relation to other physical, chemical and microbiological parameters. Highlights the need for greater oversight of the grated cheese and improvement of sanitary conditions of processing, avoiding risks to consumer health. O queijo ralado é um dos produtos alimentícios, pronto para o consumo, comumente comercializados no Brasil. Entretanto é um dos produtos que apresentam maior nível de não conformidade quanto a sua qualidade microbiológica, oferecendo riscos à saúde pública. O objetivo do presente trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade físico-química e microbiológica de queijos ralados. Foram coletadas, em agosto de 2013, amostras de 19 marcas de queijos ralados industrializados produzidos no Brasil e comercializados na cidade do Recife-PE. As amostras foram transportadas ao Laboratório Experimental de Análise de Alimentos da Universidade Federal Rural de Pernambuco. Os resultados encontrados foram confrontados com a portaria nº 357/1997 do Ministério da Agricultura Pecuária e Abastecimento. Verificou que dezesseis por cento (16%) das amostras apresentaram teores de ácido sórbico acima do permitido pela legislação, e quarenta e dois por cento (42%) das amostras apresentaram contagens de bolores e leveduras (fungos) acima do limite tolerado, porém todas as marcas apresentaram conformidade em relação aos demais parâmetros físico-químicos e microbiológicos. Evidencia-se, portanto, a necessidade de uma maior fiscalização do queijo ralado e melhorias das condições higiênico-sanitárias de processamento, evitando riscos à saúde dos consumidores.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2022-01-01 Fresh and local production of tropical fish species are growing in demand in subtropical and temperate regions. However, their productions are limited by the short growing season and uncertainty related to using agricultural greenhouses. Thus, this study evaluated the economic feasibility of Amazon River prawn (Macrobrachium amazonicum) and tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) grow-outs in monoculture and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture (IMTA) systems carried out in a subtropical region of Brazil, considering the transfer of the fish to agricultural greenhouses to complete the grow-out during the winter season. Simulations were performed of each system on small- (1 ha) and medium (5 ha)-sized properties to test the effects of production system and scale on cost return and cash flow, economic indicators, and sensitivity (risk) to productivity and market changes. Treatments were prawn monoculture (PRWN), tambaqui monoculture (FISH), IMTA of prawns and tambaqui reared free-swimming (IMTA), and IMTA of prawns reared free-swimming and tambaqui reared in net cages (CAGE). Harvested prawns were marketed for recreational fishing and the tambaqui is traded for the next grow-out phase after overwintering in greenhouses. Internal rate of return (IRR), net present value (NPV), payback period (PP), and benefit–cost ratio (BCR) showed economic feasibility for all systems, and shorter PP and greater profitability were observed with an increased size of the properties. In addition, the integrated systems showed resilience by remaining economically feasible when subjected to variations in productivity, major costs, and selling price. Further research should test the technical feasibility of producing tambaqui in greenhouses during the winter in colder climates. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-12-28 Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) Introduction: Gingival recession (GR) is a relevant clinical condition due to its high prevalence worldwide, which leads to aesthetic demands and dentin hypersensitivity. Collagen matrices have been associated with different designs of coronally advanced flaps (CAFs) to treat GR defects. However, the literature lacks long-term follow-up of this treatment option. The aim of this study is to present the long-term follow-up (up to 7 years) of two GR defects (associated or not with noncarious cervical lesion) treated with a CAF and a collagen matrix (CM). Case presentation Case 1 underwent a CAF associated with a CM to treat a single GR defect. After 7 years, Case 1 presented with 3 mm of recession reduction, which corresponds with the 85.7% of root coverage. Case 2 presented two GR defects associated with noncarious cervical lesions (NCCLs). The NCCLs were partially restored with resin composite and then underwent a modified CAF for multiple defects and a CM. After 5 years of follow-up, Case 2 presented with 1.5 and 2.5 mm of recession reduction, which corresponds with the average 83.3% defect coverage. Conclusion These two cases may show that CMs can provide long-term stable outcomes in the treatment of GR defects. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-01-01 This study investigates ceriantharian tubes to better understand the biodiversity of marine benthic crustaceans. The inner and outer surfaces of eight tubes of Ceriantharia from the northern coast of the state of São Paulo, Brazil, were analyzed. We observed 14 taxa of crustaceans, including one novel species, Podocerus carmelina sp. nov. We also report two new location records for previously known species and provide an identification key for Podocerus species with type localities in the Atlantic Ocean. The new species can be easily differentiated from its congeners by the following features: pereonite 3 with weak dorsal carina; gnathopod 2 carpus indistinct, almost entirely fused to propodus, propodus bearing several facial short plumose setae, palm defined by a proximal blunt projection, with a subtriangular tooth medially, a ‘u-shaped’ concavity and a crenulated lobe distally; pereonite 4 elongated, about 2.2 × deeper than wide; pereonites 5–6 anteroventral corner with a subacute projection; coxa 5 anteroventral corner with a notch, forming an acute spine; telson dorsal lobe with three stout setae, with naked lateral margins; uropod 2 outer ramus with one subapical long and stout plumose seta. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-09-01 Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq) Objectives: The majority of available scores to assess mortality risk of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients in the emergency department have high risk of bias. Therefore, this cohort aimed to develop and validate a score at hospital admission for predicting in-hospital mortality in COVID-19 patients and to compare this score with other existing ones. Methods: Consecutive patients (≥ 18 years) with confirmed COVID-19 admitted to the participating hospitals were included. Logistic regression analysis was performed to develop a prediction model for in-hospital mortality, based on the 3978 patients admitted between March–July, 2020. The model was validated in the 1054 patients admitted during August–September, as well as in an external cohort of 474 Spanish patients. Results: Median (25–75th percentile) age of the model-derivation cohort was 60 (48–72) years, and in-hospital mortality was 20.3%. The validation cohorts had similar age distribution and in-hospital mortality. Seven significant variables were included in the risk score: age, blood urea nitrogen, number of comorbidities, C-reactive protein, SpO2/FiO2 ratio, platelet count, and heart rate. The model had high discriminatory value (AUROC 0.844, 95% CI 0.829–0.859), which was confirmed in the Brazilian (0.859 [95% CI 0.833–0.885]) and Spanish (0.894 [95% CI 0.870–0.919]) validation cohorts, and displayed better discrimination ability than other existing scores. It is implemented in a freely available online risk calculator (https://abc2sph.com/). Conclusions: An easy-to-use rapid scoring system based on characteristics of COVID-19 patients commonly available at hospital presentation was designed and validated for early stratification of in-hospital mortality risk of patients with COVID-19. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-10-01 The Tocantins-Araguaia Basin is one of the largest river systems in South America, located entirely within Brazilian territory. In the last decades, capital-concentrating activities such as agribusiness, mining, and hydropower promoted extensive changes in land cover, hydrology, and environmental conditions. These changes are jeopardizing the basin’s biodiversity and ecosystem services. Threats are escalating as poor environmental policies continue to be formulated, such as environmentally unsustainable hydropower plants, large-scale agriculture for commodity production, and aquaculture with non-native fish. If the current model persists, it will deepen the environmental crisis in the basin, compromising broad conservation goals and social development in the long term. Better policies will require thought and planning to minimize growing threats and ensure the basin’s sustainability for future generations. Background: Conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) are fatty acids that are found in the lipids from goat milk, and appear to protect neurons from excitotoxicity. Methods: We investigated in developing rats the effects of a maternal CLA-rich diet (containing 7% lipids from goat milk) on body development and cerebral electrical activity of the progeny from dams receiving the CLA diet during gestation (G), lactation (L) or both periods (G + L). Results: Compared to a control group (C) receiving a diet with 7% soybean oil, body weight increased at 14, 21 and 28 days, but not at 35-45 days, in L and G + L groups (P < 0.05). No intergroup difference was found on body and brain weights, body length, abdominal and thoracic circumferences, body mass index and abdominal to thoracic circumference ratio at 35?45 days. In contrast, at this later age the CSD velocities of propagation were significantly higher (P < 0.05) in L as compared with the C and G group, and in the L + G, as compared with the C, G and L groups, suggesting a long-lasting brain effect. Conclusion: These data indicate that a maternal CLA-rich diet can differentially influence body weight increment (short-term effect), and CSD propagation (long-term effect) in the progeny, and the lactation is the most critical period for such diet actions. General significance. The facilitating effect of the lipids from goat milk on an excitability-related phenomenon in the brain (CSD) can be of clinical relevance, since CSD has been associated to neurological disturbances like migraine and epilepsy. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-12-01 Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Assessment of human nutrition is a complex process, in pregnant women identify dietary patterns through mean nutrient consumption can be an opportunity to better educate women on how to improve their overall health through better eating. This exploratory study aimed to identify a posteriori dietary patterns in a cohort of nulliparous pregnant women. The principal component analysis (PCA) technique was performed, with Varimax orthogonal rotation of data extracted from the 24-h dietary recall, applied at 20 weeks of gestation. We analysed 1.145 dietary recalls, identifying five main components that explained 81% of the dietary pattern of the sample. Dietary patterns found were: Obesogenic, represented by ultra-processed foods, processed foods, and food groups rich in carbohydrates, fats and sugars; Traditional, most influenced by natural, minimally processed foods, groups of animal proteins and beans; Intermediate was similar to the obesogenic, although there were lower loads; Vegetarian, which was the only good representation of fruits, vegetables and dairy products; and Protein, which best represented the groups of proteins (animal and vegetable). The obesogenic and intermediate patterns represented over 37% of the variation in food consumption highlighting the opportunity to improve maternal health especially for women at first mothering. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-11-26 Tropical forest hotspots have a high diversity of species but have lost > 70% of their original vegetation cover and are characterized by a multitude of small and isolated fragments. Paradoxically, conservation actions in these areas are still mainly focused on protection of large tracts of forests, a strategy now infeasible because of the small area of forest remnants. Here we use the Vulnerable black-handed titi monkey Callicebus melanochir as a model to study the effects of habitat loss, fragmentation and degradation on arboreal mammals and to provide insights for science-driven conservation in fragmented landscapes in tropical forest hotspots. We surveyed 38 Atlantic Forest fragments in Bahia State, Brazil and assessed the effects of patch area, quality and visibility, and landscape connectivity on the occurrence of our model species. Patch area was the single best model explaining species occurrence. Nonetheless, patch quality and visibility, and landscape connectivity, positively affect occurrence. In addition to patch area, patch quality, patch visibility and landscape connectivity are useful for predicting the occurrence of arboreal mammals in the fragments of tropical forest hotspots. We encourage the assessment of habitat quality (based on remotely sensed vegetation indices) and habitat visibility (based on digital elevation models) to improve discoverability of arboreal mammal populations and selection of fragments for conservation purposes across fragmented landscapes of tropical forest hotspots. Large remnants of tropical forest hotspots are scarce and therefore we require baseline data to support conservation actions and management in small forest fragments. In this study, we diverge from traditional macroecological approaches by considering both biotic (avian species diversity) and abiotic (climatic) factors in determining the global distribution pattern of feather mite species richness, one of the most abundant and diverse bird ectosymbionts. Location: Global. Methods: We used a global dataset of feather mite–bird interactions published in 2016, complemented with an up-to-date literature survey. We created statistical models designed to explain the effect of abiotic (i.e., temperature, precipitation and energy-related variables) and biotic factors (bird species richness) on the species richness of feather mites. We used these models to predict global distribution patterns of mites and estimate each explanatory variable's relative importance in temperate and tropical regions. Results: According to our models, bird species richness accounts for ~63% of the global distribution pattern of mites, which is ten times more relevant than climatic variables. Among abiotic drivers, precipitation intensity and seasonality were the most important variables, accounting for 10% of mite species richness. This figure is lower in tropical regions, where biotic factors are seven times more important than in temperate regions. Main conclusions: We demonstrate that global mite diversity was primarily determined by biotic and, to a lesser extent, abiotic factors. The relative importance of the predictive variables, however, varied between tropical and temperate regions. The strong association between bird species richness and feather mite species diversity at a global scale raises concerns about the potential for future co-extinctions. The worms were identified based on morphological and molecular data using the 28S rDNA gene and the COI gene. Specimens of A. longa from the pinniped Otaria flavescens were also analyzed. As the first isolation of A. longa from cetaceans, the present study increases the distribution area and range of definitive hosts of this trematode, and provides new molecular data to complement the phylogeny of the group in future studies, thus contributing to the scientific knowledge of this potentially zoonotic parasite. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-12-01 Spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB) is a major pregnancy complication involving biological, social, behavioural and environmental mechanisms. Workload, shift and intensity may play a role in the occurrence of sPTB. This analysis is aimed addressing the effect of occupational activities on the risk for sPTB and the related outcomes. We conducted a secondary analysis of the EMIP study, a Brazilian multicentre cross-sectional study. For this analysis, we included 1,280 singleton sPTB and 1,136 singleton term birth cases. Independent variables included sociodemographic characteristics, clinical complications, work characteristics, and physical effort devoted to household chores. A backward multiple logistic regression analysis was applied for a model using work characteristics, controlled by cluster sampling design. On bivariate analysis, discontinuing work during pregnancy and working until the 7th month of pregnancy were risks for premature birth while working during the 8th - 9th month of pregnancy, prolonged standing during work and doing household chores appeared to be protective against sPTB during pregnancy. Previous preterm birth, polyhydramnios, vaginal bleeding, stopping work during pregnancy, or working until the 7th month of pregnancy were risk factors in the multivariate analysis. The protective effect of variables compatible with exertion during paid work may represent a reverse causality. Nevertheless, a reduced risk associated with household duties, and working until the 8th-9th month of pregnancy support the hypothesis that some sort of physical exertion may provide actual protection against sPTB. Both, free and restrained shrinkage conditions are studied. The experiments show that pure soils do not curl upon unrestrained shrinkage; however, (under the same conditions) kaolinite/sand mixtures exhibited a marked curling. Furthermore, the mixture with the higher sand content broke through the middle of the sample after displaying a significant curling. Soils subjected to restricted shrinkage developed cracks with slight curling. To simulate the observed behavior, a mechanical model able to reproduce the detachment of the soil sample from the mold is proposed in this work and implemented in a fully coupled hydro-mechanical finite-element code. It is concluded that suction and differential shrinkage are key factors influencing the curling behavior of soils. The proposed framework was able to satisfactorily explain and reproduce the different stages and features of soil behavior observed in the experiments. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2022-05-01 The contraction of the amount of suitable habitat due to climate change can result in a species becoming threatened with extinction. Strong evidence supports that this effect will be pronounced for several species of small mammals in the near future. We address these issues using the ensemble technique to generate potential distribution models for Neotropical marsupials associated with aquatic environments, Chironectes minimus and Lutreolina crassicaudata, and predict the effects of climate change on the distribution of these two species. We later evaluate the effectiveness of the Fully Protected Areas for the two species in the present and future scenarios. Based on our models, we recommend priority areas for the conservation of these species, emphasizing conservation efforts across borders between countries. Our results indicated that both species will suffer a significant restriction of their potential distributions until 2050. Our models predicted that the loss of suitable areas will be greater for C. minimus, with only ~33% of the original distribution area remaining. The models also indicated that the current system of Fully Protected Areas in the Neotropical region will protect L. crassicaudata in a small area of its current and future potential distribution, inserted in climatically stable areas (~14%). These scenarios for these species support strong impacts on the biodiversity protection in aquatic environments in the Neotropical region. We strongly recommend the priority planning and implementation of transboundary Fully Protected Areas in stable areas of distribution of these species to maintain the protection of these marsupials and the ecosystems to which they are associated. Molybdenum (Mo) is a nutrient directly related to the assimilation of N. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of Mo and N on nitrate reductase activity (NRA), productivity and technological quality of sugarcane in ratoon cane cycle under Mo and N fertilization. A field experiment was carried out using the variety SP 933,094, subjected to four doses of Mo (0, 100, 200 and 400 g ha−1) and three doses of N (0, 60 and 120 kg ha−1). Biometric growth variables, NRA, productivity and technological quality of the sugarcane were evaluated. NRA increased with the application of Mo doses at all N levels, with a maximum of 400 g ha−1. The increase in the agricultural productivity was higher with N application of 120 kg ha−1, equal to 17 Mg ha−1 with Mo application of 206 g ha−1. The maximum increments in sugar productivity caused by Mo application were 12%, 27% and 18%, respectively, with N doses of 0, 60 and 120 kg ha−1. The combined doses of 120 kg ha−1 of N and 200 g ha−1 of Mo promoted greater agricultural productivity and sugar productivity. Our results suggest that Mo did not promote reduction in the use of N, but showed that nitrogen fertilization was stimulated by the use of Mo, by the increase in NRA, increasing the productivity and technological quality of sugarcane. Among the sap-sucking insects that infest sugarcane [Saccharum spp. (Poaceae)] around the world, scale insects (Hemiptera: Coccomorpha) stand out with 103 recorded species. Most of them are frequently regarded as secondary or occasional pests (Garcia Morales et al., 2016). In Brazil, eighteen species of scale insects have already been reported on sugarcane. Of these, Aclerda takahashii (Kuwana, 1932) (Aclerdidae), Margarodes sp., (Margarodidae) and Saccharicoccus sacchari (Cockerell, 1895) (Pseudococcidae) are known to the state of Rio Grande do Sul (Garcia Morales et al., 2016; Borges Filho et al., 2019; Monteiro et al., 2019). Substantial changes in xylem ureides, glutamine and asparagine are known to mark the functioning of these two processes of N assimilation. The objective was to evaluate whether similar changes in these metabolites occur in the source organs, roots and nodules, as well as the timing of these events. The clearest relationship was found for asparagine, the main product of nitrate assimilation in the root exported in the xylem, where in the presence of nitrate, substantial increases took place in both the xylem and root. The markers of N2 fixation, ureides and glutamine, showed a much less expressive change (ureides) or no significant change (glutamine) in the nodules compared to the substantial change recorded in the xylem. The highly contrasting level of asparagine in the nodule in response to N2 fixation activity has potential as a diagnostic tool for activity of this assimilatory process. The timing of changes in the source organs coincided with that of the xylem. Activities of glutamine synthetase, glutamine oxoglutarate amino transferase and asparagine synthetase in roots and nodules varied according to the treatment, consistent with changes in assimilatory activity. A short period of N starvation accelerated nitrate uptake and assimilation in the roots when nitrate became available. The evidence did not support nitrate assimilation in nodules. Despite that, this biome still includes many areas that are poorly known floristically, including several protected areas, such as the Floresta Nacional do Rio Preto (Flona do Rio Preto), located in the Brazilian State of Espírito Santo. This study used a published vascular plant species list for this protected area from the Catálogo de Plantas das Unidades de Conservação do Brasil as the basis to synthesise the species richness, endemism, conservation and new species occurrences found in the Flona do Rio Preto. New information The published list of vascular plants was based on field expeditions conducted between 2018 and 2020 and data obtained from herbarium collections available in online databases. Overall, 722 species were documented for the Flona do Rio Preto, 711 of which are native to Brazil and 349 are endemic to the Atlantic Forest. In addition, 60 species are geographically disjunct between the Atlantic and the Amazon Forests. Most of the documented species are woody and more than 50% of these are trees. Twenty-three species are threatened (CR, EN and VU), while five are Data Deficient (DD). Thirty-two species are new records for the State of Espirito Santo. Our results expand the knowledge of the flora of the Atlantic Forest and provide support for the development of new conservation policies for this protected area. Larger geographical areas contain more species—an observation raised to a law in ecology. Less explored is whether biodiversity changes are accompanied by a modification of interaction networks. We use data from 32 spatial interaction networks from different ecosystems to analyse how network structure changes with area. We find that basic community structure descriptors (number of species, links and links per species) increase with area following a power law. Yet, the distribution of links per species varies little with area, indicating that the fundamental organization of interactions within networks is conserved. Our null model analyses suggest that the spatial scaling of network structure is determined by factors beyond species richness and the number of links. We demonstrate that biodiversity–area relationships can be extended from species counts to higher levels of network complexity. We confirmed the occurrence of 16 species in Espírito Santo state, of which four are new records and only three are not found in protected areas. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-12-30 The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of the decrease of fishmeal in diets with crude protein levels on performance, nutrient retention efficiency, and intestinal histology in the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). We used 180 tilapia fingerlings with an initial weight of 1.17 ± 0.05 g, distributed in 18 aquariums for 75 days. The results were analyzed in a completely randomized design, with six treatments in a 3x2 factorial, corresponding to three crude protein levels in the diets (20%, 24% and 28%) and two levels of inclusion of fishmeal-FP (25% or 50% of the protein level of the diet), with three replications. When the analysis of variance showed significant differences between treatments, the means were compared by the Tukey test. Production performance and nutrient retention efficiency and changes in histology and height of intestinal villi were evaluated. The increase in protein in the diet provided an increase in weight gain and the specific growth rate. Diets with protein levels of 28% promote nutrient balance to the point of decreasing the inclusion of fishmeal (25%), reflecting better productive performance indexes and adaptations in the morphology of the digestive tract of Nile tilapia. Histomorphometric changes are related to the diet provided and represent an adaptive response to metabolism. It was concluded that juvenile tilapia diets with 28% crude protein can decrease the inclusion of fishmeal (25%), reflecting better productive performance indexes and adaptations in digestive tract morphology.
