Abstract

International audience; The increased focus on supersonic and hypersonic flows necessitates methods to study such flows in laboratory-based facilities, thus motivating researchers to find effective, efficient, and affordable methods to produce them in laboratories. It is desirable for the rocket nozzles to operate efficiently at different altitudes, which made the Altitude Compensating Nozzles emerge as a solution. In this work, we propose a new design for such nozzles, namely, the ringed nozzle. The proposed nozzle consists of a stack of parallel rings that serve as a nozzle with bleeding slots. This design can be utilised to obtain different exit Mach numbers and attain the desired performance according to the pressure ratio, serving as an Altitude Compensating Nozzle. The stack of rings might be altered to tailor nozzle shape and area ratio corresponding to the nozzle requirement. The nozzle is analysed from an engineering perspective by comparing the thrust coefficient and specific impulse, and the numerical simulations show promising results.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate and compare, radiographically and clinically, the impacts of calcium-silicate based-cement (CSBC), nano-hydroxyapatite and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) as pulpotomy agents in permanent immature molars with incomplete root development. Sixty-three participants (63 permanent immature molars) were included in this study. The patients were randomly divided into three equal groups. Fast setting MTA (MM-MTA), nano-hydroxyapatite and platelet-rich fibrin were used as pulpotomy agents. The teeth were evaluated clinically and radiographically after 6 and 12 months by two blinded examiners. Apical closure and pulp canal obliteration percentages were recorded. The in vitro reaction of the tested materials after a 7-day immersion period of the different materials in phosphate-buffered solution was analyzed using scanning electron microscopy to associate the in vitro mineralization with in vivo pulp canal obliteration percentages. Data were analyzed using Chi-square and ANOVA tests (α = 0.05). No significant difference was found between the three tested groups in terms of clinical and radiographic success (p > 0.05). All cases demonstrated evidence of root growth, including complete apical closure or continued apical closure. At 12 months, complete apical closure was found among the MM-MTA group (50%), nano-hydroxyapatite group (55%) and platelet-rich fibrin group (60%) (p > 0.05). After 12 months, pulp canal obliteration was more observed in the MM-MTA and nano-hydroxyapatite groups than in the PRF group (p < 0.05). MM-MTA (auto-mixed), NHA (hand-mixed) and PRF (autologous) could be used as pulpotomy agents since they exhibit comparable high clinical and radiographic success rates. However, the fact that the groups managed with MM-MTA and NHA have a higher tendency to canal obliteration might indicate that PRF should be considered the first choice material as pulpotomy agent, as it would make retreatment considerably easier. Abstract

International audience; Creating a supersonic jet in the laboratory is both a challenging and an expensive task. The supersonic flow is sensitive to the shape of the wall bounding it because a shock could be developed at the sharp edges. Moreover, the growth of boundary layer, within and outside the nozzle, makes the design of a convergent-divergent nozzle a sophisticated work. The present work proposes an optimization algorithm that is believed to be efficient in constructing a nozzle contour to deliver a shock-free radially uniform flow at the exit plane. The steepest descent optimization technique is employed to obtain the shape with minimum radial velocity at the outlet, along with restriction on the inlet angle, i.e., the angle of divergence immediately downstream the throat. Three different ways of implementing the constraints are discussed and compared with the experimental results after fabricating the nozzle. The optimized nozzle shows a potential core of 7 throat diameters height at the nozzle exit and an axial extent of 28 throat diameters downstream the exit plane. Further, the nozzle appears to operate efficiently even after increasing the nominal total temperature by 25% or decreasing it by 50%.

Abstract

The aim of the present in vitro study was to evaluate specific mechanical and physicochemical properties of two calcium silicate based sealers, (AH Plus Bioceramic “AHPB”; Well-Root ST “WRST”), and a conventional resin sealer (AH Plus “AHP”). These aims were accomplished by assessing the porosity, pH, compression strength, roughness, wettability and cell attachment of the tested materials. The results were compared statistically using the one-way ANOVA test. Higher pH values were obtained in both AHPB and WRST compared to AHP at 3, 24 and 72 h (p < 0.05). A greater level of porosity and wettability was detected for both AHPB and WRST compared to the resin sealer AHP (p < 0.05). Evident cell growth characterized by elongated morphology was observed on the surface of AHPB and WRST, while only a thin layer of cells was seen on the surface of AHP. A significant lower compression strength and modulus were obtained in the specimens created using AHPB compared to those made with AHP and WRST (p < 0.05). The removal of calcium silicates may be quite tricky during endodontic retreatment. In conclusion, considering the limitations of the present in vitro study, both calcium silicate sealers demonstrated good physicochemical properties. However, the lower compression strength and modulus of AHPB may facilitate its removal and make the retreatment procedures considerably easier. Abstract

Background Although there are many asymptomatic patients, one of the problems of COVID-19 is early recognition of the disease. COVID-19 symptoms are polymorphic and may include upper respiratory symptoms. However, COVID-19 symptoms may be mistaken with the common cold or allergic rhinitis. An ARIA-EAACI study group attempted to differentiate upper respiratory symptoms between the three diseases. Methods A modified Delphi process was used. The ARIA members who were seeing COVID-19 patients were asked to fill in a questionnaire on the upper airway symptoms of COVID-19, common cold and allergic rhinitis. Results Among the 192 ARIA members who were invited to respond to the questionnaire, 89 responded and 87 questionnaires were analysed. The consensus was then reported. A two-way ANOVA revealed significant differences in the symptom intensity between the three diseases (p < .001). Conclusions This modified Delphi approach enabled the differentiation of upper respiratory symptoms between COVID-19, the common cold and allergic rhinitis. An electronic algorithm will be devised using the questionnaire.

This study investigated the antibacterial activity, bond strength to dentin (SBS), and ultra-morphology of the polymer–dentin interface of experimental adhesive systems doped with pyrogallol (PY), which is a ubiquitous phenolic moiety that is present in flavonoids and polyphenols. A universal adhesive containing 4-META and 10-MDP was used in this study. PY behaves as an antioxidant and anti-cancerogenic agent and it was incorporated into the adhesive at different concentrations (0.5 and 1 wt.%). The antibacterial activity and SBS were analyzed and the results were statistically analyzed. The ultra-morphology of the polymer–dentin interface was assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). At 24 h, a lower antibacterial activity was observed for the control adhesive compared to those with 0.5% and 1% PY. No difference was seen in SBS between the three groups at 24 h. After 6 months, the SBS of the 0.5% PY adhesive was significantly lower than the other tested adhesives. The specimens created with 1% PY adhesive presented a higher bond strength at six months compared with that found at 24 h. No morphological differences were found at the polymer–dentin interfaces of the tested adhesives. Pyrogallol may be incorporated into modern universal adhesive systems to preserve the polymer–dentin bonding interface and confer a certain degree of antibacterial activity.

Abstract

Background: The foot is the most complex body’s structure; it is highly susceptible to disorders because of its loading pattern. The complexity of the foot structure geometry implies the use of reverse engineering tools to obtain a model that can accurately mimic the biomechanical behavior of the foot. Objective: The objective of this study is to establish a state-of-the-art ankle-foot finite element (FE) model with anatomically realistic geometry and structure in order to get the model that will suit all cases for future studies on stress injuries and foot insole designs under different loading conditions.Material and Methods: In this analytical study, tomography images were imported in DICOM format, after that, the object was exported in the form of three-dimensional structures in STL file format to define and assemble the structures. After that, the computer simulation on numerical model was done. One-way Analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was performed, and a threshold (pResults: The results showed no significant differences (P>0.05) between the values of the plantar pressure corresponding to neutral standing condition with other foot models in literature. The stresses transferred to the bone structure show that the relatively higher stress was located in the fifth, fourth and third tarsometatarsal, where the maximum von Mises stress in the bone structure was 2155.4 kPa. Conclusion: The state-of-the-art ankle-foot FE model with anatomically realistic geometry and structure will be very helpful for future studies on stress injuries and foot insole designs under different loading conditions.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to compare the physicochemical properties, filling ability, and antibacterial activity of a premixed calcium silicate-based sealer to those of a powder&ndash, liquid bioceramic sealer. Ceraseal (CS) and BioRoot (BR) materials were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy at 7 and 14 d of immersion in distilled water. The filling ability of the two sealers as well as the water contact angle, solubility, flow, roughness, crystalline microstructure, pH, and compressive strength were also evaluated. The antibacterial activity was assessed through an agar diffusion as well as through direct tests. All the results were statistically analyzed using one-way or two-way analysis of variance tests. Statistically significant lower void percentages were observed for CS at 2 and 8 mm from the working length (WL) compared to those for the BR group, whilst no significant difference was observed at 5 mm from the WL. BR sealer showed higher alkaline pH, rougher surface, lower water contact angle values, lower flowability, and higher solubility compared to CS. BR showed globular and needle-like crystalline microstructure, whilst CS had globular and flower-like crystalline microstructure up to 72 h. No statistical difference was found for the compressive strength between the two sealers. BR and CS showed no antibacterial effect against Enterococcus faecalis after 3 h, whilst both sealers showed antibacterial capacity after 24 and 72 h. BR demonstrated higher antibacterial activity after 24 h. In conclusion, the use of bioceramic sealers may play an important role in controlling bacterial growth. Moreover, CS may have superior filling ability and lower solubility than the BioRoot sealer due to its specific chemical composition and mixing method.

Abstract

Aim The purpose of this study was to evaluate the microscopic and chemical effects of phosphoric acid gel, phosphoric acid liquid, and polyacrylic acid application for 15 seconds (s) on coronal dentin. Materials and methods Twelve extracted teeth were selected. Three etching acids were used to prepare the dentin surfaces. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX) were used to analyze the chemical and morphological changes of the dentinal surfaces, including the depth of demineralization. Collected data were statistically analyzed by the one-way analysis of variance test. Results Dentin etched with phosphoric acid gel or liquid showed greater peritubular dentin dissolution, including complete removal of the smear layer. In addition, there were many silica particles on the dentin etched by phosphoric acid gel 37%. The dentin that was etched with 25% polyacrylic acid for 15 seconds showed no smear layer removal. Chemical analysis (EDX) showed that dental surfaces etched with phosphoric acid liquid 37% for 15 seconds showed the strongest mineral dissolution at the calcium surface, with a calcium content of 5.25%. On the other hand, EDX analysis of the dental surface etched with 25% polyacrylic acid showed more surface enrichment in calcium (17.19%). Conclusion Although phosphoric acid (gel or liquid) 37% cleans the dental surface, phosphoric acid gel precipitates silica particles on the etched dentin surface. These particles cannot be removed by rinsing off this acid. The application of polyacrylic acid for 15 seconds does not noticeably demineralized dentin, nor remove the smear layer. Clinical significance The clinician should use phosphoric acid (gel or liquid) to clean dental surfaces to prepare them for the bonding process. The low demineralizing effects of the polyacrylic acid permits its use near the pulp.

Abstract

(1) Background: This study investigated the effect of the adhesive layer thickness and the length of resin tags on dentin bond strength of five universal adhesives applied in self-etch mode. (2) Methods: One hundred and fifty extracted human third molars were used. Five different universal adhesives were applied in self-etch mode on the dentin surface. Half of the specimens were subjected to an aging procedure for six months. A shear bond strength (SBS) test was performed and the results were statistically analyzed with a t-test and one-way ANOVA test. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was executed to measure the adhesive layer thickness and tag depth. (3) Results: No statistical differences were found between the five adhesive systems after a 24 h storage period, regardless of layer thickness and tag depth (p &lt, 0.05). After 6 months of aging in water at 37 °C, Iperbond Max and Scotchbond Universal preserved the bond strength over time (p &lt, 0.05), whilst the SBS of Iperbond Ultra, FuturaBond M+, and Ibond Universal decreased significantly after the aging period. No relation was observed between the adhesive thickness or tags’ length on SBS. (4) Conclusions: Within the limitation of this study, the stability over time of the bond strength of universal adhesives depends on their compositions regardless of the adhesive layer thickness and/or tags’ length.

Abstract

International audience; The phytohormone jasmonic acid (JA) and its derivatives, collectively referred to as jasmonates, regulate many developmental processes, but are also involved in response to numerous abiotic/biotic stresses. Thus far, powerful reverse genetic strategies employing perception, signaling or biosynthesis mutants have broadly contributed to our understanding of JA implication in plant stress response and development; so did the chemical gain-of-function approach based on exogenous application of the hormone. However, there is currently no method that allows for in planta tightly controlled JA production. Investigating the control of the JA synthesis pathway in bacteria-infected cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) plants, we identified a transcription factor (TF), namely GhERF-IIb3, that could act as positive regulator of the JA pathway. Expression of this well-conserved TF in cotton leaves was sufficient to bring about in situ JA accumulation at physiological concentrations associated with enhanced cotton defense response to bacterial infection.

Abstract

SummaryDuring spinal cord development, astrocyte precursors arise from neuroepithelial progenitors, delaminate from the ventricular zone, and migrate toward their final locations where they differentiate. Although the mechanisms underlying their early specification and late differentiation are being deciphered, less is known about the temporal control of their migration. Here, we show that the epithelial-mesenchymal transition regulator Zeb1 is expressed in glial precursors and report that loss of Zeb1 function specifically delays the onset of astrocyte precursor delamination from the ventricular zone, correlating with transient deregulation of the adhesion protein Cadherin-1. Consequently, astrocyte precursor invasion into the Zeb1−/− mutant white matter is delayed, and induction of their differentiation is postponed. These findings illustrate how fine regulation of adhesive properties influences the onset of neural precursor migration and further support the notion that duration of exposure of migrating astrocyte precursors to environmental cues and/or their correct positioning influence the timing of their differentiation.

Abstract

Large applications executing on Grid or cluster architectures consisting of hundreds or thousands of computational nodes create problems with respect to reliability. The source of the problems are node failures and the need for dynamic configuration over extensive run-time. This paper presents two fault-tolerance mechanisms called theft induced checkpointing and systematic event logging. These are transparent protocols capable of overcoming problems associated with both, benign faults, i.e., crash faults, and node or subnet volatility. Specifically, the protocols base the state of the execution on a dataflow graph, allowing for efficient recovery in dynamic heterogeneous systems as well as multi-threaded applications. By allowing recovery even under different numbers of processors, the approaches are especially suitable for applications with need for adaptive or reactionary configuration control. The low-cost protocols offer the capability of controlling or bounding the overhead. A formal cost model is presented, followed by an experimental evaluation. It is shown that the overhead of the protocol is very small and the maximum work lost by a crashed process is small and bounded.

Abstract

PURPOSE: (1) Describe both nervous pathways to the sphincters, and highlight the anatomical support of their coordination. (2) Obtain a 3D representation of this complex innervation system. METHODS: A computer-assisted anatomical dissection technique was used. Serial histological sections were cut in the pelvis of four female human foetuses (aged 19-32weeks of gestation). The sections were treated with conventional staining, and with seven different immunostainings. The sections were digitalized and, finally, a 3D representation was built from the corresponding images. RESULTS: Myelinated and sensory fibres were detected at the inferior hypogastric plexus (IHP) level. Our analysis showed that most of the afferent sensory fibres come from the urinary and anal sphincters through the anterior and posterior branches of the IHP respectively. A highly positive nitrergic (anti-NOS1) and sensitive (anti-CGRP) labelling was found in the external layer of the urethral sphincter. The 3D representation allowed describing the two components of the innervation system. A sensory-motor regulation loop was found for both sphincters. CONCLUSION: A 3D description of the components of both nervous pathways to the sphincters has been established. Our findings on the innervation of the sphincters tend to question the classical infra/supra levatorian muscle description. The coordinated work of the internal and external layers of the anal and urethral sphincter is probably mediated by multiple roles regulation.

Abstract

The Barada and Awaj basin is the most important and extensively used water basin in Syria. Chemical and isotopic data of groundwater have been used to determine the spatial distribution of hydrogeological features in the upper part of Awaj River catchment area located southwest of this basin. Hydrogeochemical evolution of groundwater reveals the domination of dissolution/precipitation mechanisms in these very complex stratigraphic sequences. The dissolution of carbonate rocks as well as reverse cation exchange processes seem to be the main factors controlling groundwater mineralization. The isotopic composition of precipitation and groundwater indicate that the modern-day atmospheric precipitation is the main source of groundwater recharge before an important evaporation occurred. The isotopic data also imply an existence of hydraulic connection between the different aquifers system. The results obtained allowed us to delineate two main spatial groundwater zones within the study area with different flow components. The south, central and eastern parts are considered to be one zone which is characterised by a shallow horizontal flow associated with active interaction between groundwater and hosting rocks. The nitrate concentrations in this zone are attributed to anthropogenic sources. The second zone consists in south-western, western and north-western parts where the karstic features are well developed mainly in the Jurassic strata. This zone is characterized by a high vulnerability to pollution confirmed by high values of nitrate coming from sewage water. The deep vertical groundwater flow component seems to be dominant in this zone and is controlled by fractures and geological structures.

Abstract

Northwest Africa (NWA) 3164 and 5167 are two angrites with a granulitic texture unlike that of other angrites, with a variable, up to millimeter grain size. Besides mineralogical and chemical similarities to other angrites, NWA 3164 and 5167 exhibit unique characteristics. Ca-rich olivine dominates (in NWA 3164: ∼49 vol%, Fo57; NWA 5167: 40 vol%, Fo59). Fassaitic clinopyroxene is the second major phase (in NWA 3164: 29 vol%; in NWA 5167: 36 vol%) with a significant Tschermak component. In addition, two Al-rich phases are present: plagioclase An99 and hercynitic spinel (∼6 and ∼7 vol% respectively for NWA 3164; 17 and 4 vol% respectively for NWA 5167). Heavily weathered iron sulfide and kamacite, (9 wt% in NWA 3164; 4 wt% in NWA 5167) are the remaining minor phases, a unique feature among angrites. All mineral phases are homogeneous. Like other angrites, NWA 3164 and 5167 exhibit a superchondritic Ca/Al ratio, with negligible amounts of alkalis and very low silica content. The presence of metal results from the incorporation of exogenous iron following impact. Subsequent annealing resulted in the observed granulitic texture. Major element composition indicates that both NWA 3164 and 5167 are derived from a picritic angrite precursor after incorporation of metal and annealing. After correction for iron and Fo90 olivine incorporation, bulk rock REE abundances of both NWA 3164 and NWA 5167 appear lower than those of quenched angrites, showing the lowest absolute abundances among angrites. Laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) analyses of clinopyroxene, olivine and anorthite indicate that difference of Rare Earth Element (REE) abundances between NWA 3164 and NWA 5167 can be explained by adding traces of phosphate to NWA 3164. NWA 3164/5167 trace elements abundances are similar, showing depletion in volatile elements and enrichment in refractory lithophile elements such as Ca, Ti, and Al. The most incompatible elements are depleted as well, unlike other angrites. This indicates that the source of these younger angrites was more depleted in incompatible elements when compared to the older magmatic angrites. The low Hf/W is understood as the result of exogenous iron incorporation and therefore the Hf/W and W isotopic heterogeneity of the angrite parent body (APB) mantle is secondary. Comparison with other angrites suggests that iron incorporation may be necessary to explain their low Hf/W and W isotopic compositions.

Abstract

International audience; Artificial neural network ANN prediction approaches applied to the modeling of soil behavior are often solved in the forward direction, by measuring the response of the soil (outputs) to a given set of soil inputs. Conversely, one may be interested in the assessment of a given set of soil inputs that leads to given (target) soil outputs. This is the inverse of the former problem. In this study, we develop and test an inverse artificial neural network model for the prediction of the optimal soil treatment to reduce copper (Cu) toxicity assessed by a given target concentration of Cu in dwarf bean leaves (BL) from selected soil inputs. In this study the inputs are the soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and a given target toxicity value of Cu, whereas the output is the best treatment to reduce the given toxicity level. It is shown that the proposed method can successfully identify the best soil treatment from the soil properties (inputs). Two important challenges for optimal treatment prediction using neural networks are the non-uniqueness of the solution of the inverse problem and the inaccuracies in the measurement of the soil properties (inputs). It is shown that the neural network prediction model proposed can overcome both these challenges. It is also shown that the proposed inverse neural network method can potentially be applied with a high level of success to the phytoremediation of contaminated soils. Before large-scale application, further validation is needed by performing several experiments and investigations including additional factors and their combinations to capture the complex soil behavior.

Abstract

International audience; The hydrochemistry of groundwater from the Mogher Al Mer area, located in southwestern Syria, has been used as a tool to identify and assess the hydrogeological systems and associated conditions. In this arid region of Syria, groundwater is considered as the main source of water supply for both drinking and irrigation purposes. The detailed description of hydrogeochemical conditions, including major ions, physico-chemical and in situ field parameters, has underlined the very complex variability of the stratigraphic sequences and hence the numerous hydrogeological units within the study area. On the one hand, groundwater chemical signature is found to be mainly controlled by the water–rock interaction processes in the mountainous western part of the study area. On the other hand, anthropogenic influences are observed in the eastern plain. In terms of recharge mechanisms, the region can be considered as a part of a main intermediate or even regional flow system instead of a local one.

The aim of this laboratory study was to compare two predators of the rosy apple aphid (RAA) Dysaphis plantaginea: the generalist Forficula auricularia and the specialist Episyrphus balteatus. Predation by 2nd and 3rd instar larvae of E. balteatus and 3rd and 4th instar nymphs of F. auricularia was evaluated individually and in combination for 24 h in Petri dishes. Five different densities (25, 50, 75, 100 and 200) of 1st or 3rd instar nymphs of RAA were incubated at three different temperatures (15, 20 and 25 °C). Overall, the older life-stages of both predator species were more voracious than younger individuals. The two predator species did not negatively interact. Instead, when the RAA density was not limiting they had an additive effect. Although the predators consumed significantly higher numbers of RAA when the younger life-stages were offered, they fed more efficiently on the older life-stages of RAA with consumption of 1.8- to 2.7-fold higher biomass. In general, the most RAA were consumed at 20 °C. Syrphids consumed more RAA at 15 °C than at 25 °C whereas earwigs consumed slightly more aphids at 25 °C than at 15 °C. Overall, the two predators consumed a constant proportion of RAA at the first four RAA densities until reaching satiation. This finding suggests that in theory they would be effective in regulating RAA numbers in early spring when field RAA populations are beginning to build up. The potency of both predators, alone or in combination, should now be tested for augmentative approaches in semi-field and field studies

It is proposed that this represents residue from hafting, taking the practice back a further 30 000 years from the date previously noted and published in Nature. The bitumen was tracked to a source 40km away, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and carbon isotopes.

Abstract

International audience; We propose a new detection method for ultrasound-modulated optical tomography that allows us to perform parallel speckle detection with optimum shot-noise sensitivity, using a CCD camera. Moreover, we show that making use of a spatial filter system allows us to fully filter out speckle decorrelation noise. This method is confirmed by a test experiment
