BackgroundAging is an important risk factor for erectile dysfunction (ED). Both calorie restriction (CR) and physical exercise (PE) have been established as a non-medical method for the improvement of detrimental changes in aging. It is well documented that both CR and PE influence on sympathetic and parasympathetic systems; however, there are few studies on non-adrenergic non-cholinergic pathways. This study aims to investigate the NO-mediated mechanisms of CR and PE on corpus cavernosum in aged rats.Materials and Methods3 and 15 month-old rats were divided into five experimental groups: young rats fed ad libitum (Y-C), aged rats fed ad libitum (O-S), aged rats with CR (O-CR), aged rats with PE (O-PE), and aged rats with CR and PE (O-CR-PE). CR was applied to animals as a 40% reduction of daily food intake for 6 weeks. PE was moderate swimming at 30 min at 3 days/week. The effects of CR and PE were evaluated by histologic, biologic, and in-vitro tissue bath studies.ResultsThe outcomes in CR and PE groups (characterized by decreased nitrosative damage together with increased antioxidant capacity) were improved in comparison to the O-S. Apoptotic biomarkers were also lower and both endothelial and smooth muscle cell’ functions were preserved too. There was no statistical difference between apoptosis, antioxidant capacity, and nitrosative damage parameters. Contractile responses to phenylephrine and relaxation responses to carbachol were: O-CR > O-PE > O-CR-PE. In these groups, NOS protein levels determined by western-blot were: eNOS: O-CR = O-CR + PE > O-PE; iNOS: O-CR = O-PE > O-CR-PE; nNOS: O-PE > O-CR-PE > O-CR.ConclusionIn our study, both CR and PE prevented age-related changes in the corpus cavernosum of rats. Reducing nitrosative damage in the neurovascular structure was the main mechanism. CR and exercise restored the endothelial and smooth muscle cells in corpus cavernosum by decreasing apoptosis. The mechanism of enhancing functional response in corpus cavernosum with CR was the improvement of endothelial function via eNOS activation however it involves increases in the NO-cGMP signaling pathway by an endothelium-independent mechanism with PE. This might be a direct stimulation of smooth muscle cells by NO, which released from the cavernous nerve endings via nNOS activation.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to analyze the histopathological and biochemical effects of dexmedetomidine on the rat uteri exposed to experimental ischemia-reperfusion injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-four female rats were randomly divided into three groups. Group 1 was defined as the control group. An experimental uterine ischemia-reperfusion model was created in Group 2. Group 3 was assigned as the treatment group. Similar uterine ischemia-reperfusion models were created for the rats in Group 3, and then, unlike the other groups, 100 μg/kg of dexmedetomidine was administered intraperitoneally immediately after the onset of reperfusion. In blood biochemical analysis, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities and malondialdehyde (MDA), interleukin 1beta (IL-1β), interleukin 6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels were measured. In the histopathological analyses, endometrial epithelial glandular changes (leukocytosis, cell degeneration) and endometrial stromal changes (congestion, edema) were analyzed using the tissue damage scoring system. RESULTS: It was observed that IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α levels were significantly suppressed in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p=0.001, p<0.001 and p=0.001, respectively). MDA level was noted as the highest in Group 2. The MDA value in Group 3 was measured at 5.37±0.82, which was signifi- cantly decreased compared to Group 2 (p<0.001). An increase in antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD and GSH-PX) was observed in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p=0.001 and p=0.006, respectively). In our histopathological analysis, a significant improvement in endometrial epithelial glandular and endometrial stromal changes was revealed in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In our study, it has been documented that dexmedetomidine protects the uterine tissue against ischemia-reperfusion injury. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: This study’s objective was to identify the factors and impact of serums calcium 25-Hydroxy vitamin D, ferritin, uric acid, and sleeping disorders on benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) patients. Methods: This is a case and control design study. The consecutive patients’ visits (age, older than 25 years) with idiopathic BPPV were recruited in the present study. For each patient, 3:1 sex and age-matched healthy people were assigned as the control. The study comprised 177 patients with BPPV and 656 controls. The study included biochemical, clinical, physical examinations, PSQI sleep quality, supine roll test, and Dix–Hallpike test for the diagnosis of all patients, and pure-tone audiometry (PTA) was used to assess hearing. Univariate and multivariate stepwise regression analyses were used for statistical analysis. Results: The study comprised 833 patients with 295 males (35.4%) and 538 females (64.6%) who were between 25 and 70 years old. Of a total of 833 participants, 177 were BPPV patients, and 656 subject were normal. The results shown that there were significant differences between the BPPV and the normal group in terms of BMI (p = 0.039), physical activity (p = 0.003), cigarette smoking (p = 0.035), nargile-waterpipe use (p < 0.001), diabetes (p < 0.001), hypertension (p < 0.001), congestive heart failure (CHF) (p < 0.001), neurology (p < 0.001), tinnitus (p < 0.001), dizziness (p < 0.001), headache (p < 0.001), vitamin D (p = 0.004), calcium (p = 0.004), magnesium (p < 0.001), potassium (p = 0.019), phosphorus (p < 0.001), haemoglobin (p < 0.001), serum glucose (p < 0.001), HbA1c (p < 0.001), triglyceride (p < 0.001), systolic BP (p = 0.004), diastolic BP (p = 0.008), and microalbuminuria (p = 0.005); ATP III metabolic syndrome (p = 0.038), IDF metabolic syndrome (p = 0.034), and poor sleep (p = 0.033). In terms of the type of BPPV, the posterior canal was the most commonly affected (n = 126, 71.2%), followed by the horizontal (n = 43, 24.3%) and anterior canal (n = 8, 4.5%). The analysis indicated that serum ferritin (p < 0.001), uric acid (p < 0.001), blood pressure (p < 0.001), dizziness (p < 0.001), cigarette–water-pipe smokers (p = 0.004), headaches/migraines (p = 0.005), calcium (p = 0.007), vitamin D deficiency (p = 0.008), sleepiness (p = 0.016), physical activity (p = 0.022), CHF (p = 0.024), and tinnitus (p = 0.025) were considered as risk predictors for BPPV. Conclusions: The results revealed that the serum levels of vitamin D, ferritin, uric acid, and calcium are low among the study population and supplementation could be considered as prevention in BPPV patients.

We aimed to analyze the effects of diacerein in a rat model of partial unilateral ureteral obstruction (PUUO).

Objective: To reveal the effect of 2100 MHz radio frequency (RF) radiation on thyroid tissues of rats in the 10 days (group E1) and 40 days (group G1) exposure groups. Methods: In this study, 30 healthy female Wistar albino rats, weighing 200-256 g each, were used. The animals were randomly divided into four groups (E1, E2, G1 and G2). Groups E2 and G2 served as the control groups. The exposure groups were exposed to 2100 MHz RF radiation emitted by a generator, simulating a 3G-mobile phone for 6 hours/day, 5 consecutive days/week, at the same time of the day (between 9 am and 3 pm), for 10 days (group E1) and 40 days (group G1). Results: Catalase and xanthine oxidase enzyme activities were compared between the groups E1 and E2; it was found that the difference was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Between the groups G1 and G2, the difference was found to be significant with respect to catalase activities. Tissue samples of the early and late groups showed no serious pathological findings in the histopathological examination. Conclusion: We believe that comprehensive, clinical and experimental studies are needed to assess the effect of the RF exposure duration and dosage of exposure on thyroid tissues. Background Atherosclerosis, which is one of the leading causes of death all over the world, can create major or minor thromboembolic complications with the exponentially increasing diabetic status. Despite all the studies, the mechanism by which endothelial damage in atherosclerosis is triggered in diabetic setting is still not fully understood. Methods In this study, tissue factor (TF), which is thought to act together in the formation of vasular endothelial growth factor (VEGF-A) and coagulopathy in diabetic atherosclerotic patients, may be an important indicator in this regard, a total of 100 cases who were undergone off-pump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) which were at same risk group examined by dividing into diabetic status. Early postoperative process and biochemical parameters analyzed in terms of TF and VEGF-A levels measured before and after the operation. Results TF and VEGF-A expression of the T1DM group were statistically high compared to non-diabetics. Significantly longer hospital stays with changes in TF and VEGF-A were found in patients in the diabetic group compared to pre- and postoperatively, respectively; TF (95% CI: 0.879–0.992; p = 0.025), VEGF-A (95% CI: 0.964–0.991; p = 0.001) and hospital stay (95% CI: 1.96–7.49; p = 0.0001). Preoperatively measured carotid intima-media thickness (CT) was higher in diabetics and was significantly associated with atrial fibrillation (AF), (r = 0.873). Surgical team and protocols were same and OPCAB procedures were routinely applied to all patients in our clinic. No minor or major events were observed in any of the cases. Conclusion TF and VEGF-A values in patients with diabetic atherosclerosis may be important in the early detection of thromboembolic complications.

Abstract Background Postoperative atrial fibrillation is the most common arrhythmia seen after cardiac surgery. We aimed to determine the effect of obesity and metabolic syndrome on postoperative atrial fibrillation, whether they are independent risk factors, and their effect level. We also analyzed the effect of atrial fibrillation on postoperative complications. Methods In our clinic, 756 patients who underwent coronary artery bypass grafting between June 2010–September 2017 were evaluated retrospectively. Preoperatively, demographic characteristics, chronic diseases, body mass index, waist circumference measurements, and ejection fraction values of the cases were determined from file records. Perioperatively, cross-clamp and cardiopulmonary bypass times, intra-aortic balloon use, distal coronary bypass counts were determined. Postoperatively, complications, duration of intensive care unit and hospital stay, and mortality were evaluated. The patients were followed up with continuous 3-lead ECG monitorization on the postoperative first day and 12-lead ECG records once in a day on the remaining days. In the study, the first endpoint was the determination of atrial fibrillation and the second endpoint was the discharge time of the patient. Results The rate of postoperative atrial fibrillation was 21.3%. Atrial fibrillation was seen in 33% of metabolic syndrome cases and in 38.5% of obese cases. Atrial fibrillation was seen in 23, 24 and 17% of cases using statin, ACE inhibitor and beta blocker, respectively. It was seen in 21% of smokers and 20% of the COPD cases. In the study, metabolic syndrome, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and obesity, between the ages of 56–78 with Metabolic syndrome, were found to affect the development of postoperative atrial fibrillation (2.46), (2.3), (1.6), and (1.65) times, respectively. In cases with postoperative atrial fibrillation, infection and stroke were 1.45 and 8.85 times more frequent, respectively. Patients with metabolic syndrome were found to have 31% longer hospital stay, and 17% higher infection rate. In obese patients, hospitalization was 23.5% longer. Conclusions Metabolic syndrome and obesity were found to be two independent risk factors for postoperative atrial fibrillation. If causes and mechanisms of postoperative atrial fibrillation are identified in planned cardiovascular interventions, we believe that cost of hospitalization and morbidity will be reduced.

Abstract Background The increase in nitric oxide (NO) levels in the oral cavity and saliva have been associated with various oral diseases; however, the gastro-salivary interaction of NO remains controversial. Thus, the aim of this study was to determine and compare salivary NO levels of dyspeptic and non-dyspeptic healthy children and to conduct an evaluation of its association with dental caries. Methods Seventy children with dyspepsia (dyspeptic group) and 30 children without any gastrointestinal complaints (control group) were included in the study. Two biopsies from the gastric tissues were collected from dyspeptic children for histopathologic examination. Oral examination involved the assessment of dental caries, gingival index, plaque index, buffering capacity, salivary flow rate and pH. Salivary Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and Lactobacilli sp. counts were performed by commercial kits. The aim of the present study was to analyse the nitric oxide (NO) levels in gingival crevicular fluid (GCF) of patients with chronic periodontitis (CP) treated with probiotic-containing food supplements as an adjunct to initial periodontal therapy (IPT). The present study was a randomized, double blind clinical trial conducted in Yeditepe University Dental Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey. Thirty-six CP patients, with ≥2 nonmolar teeth in each quadrant with probing depth (PD) of 5–7 mm at proximal sites and radiologically detectable horizontal alveolar bone loss were randomized into two treatment groups. The test group received IPT + probiotic-containing food supplements, whereas the control group received IPT + placebo. GCF sampling was performed at the baseline and 3 and 6 months after treatment. Introduction: Oral anticoagulation with warfarin is indicated for patients with prosthetic heart valves. The effects of religious fasting during Ramadan month (in the Islamic calendar) on anticoagulation aren’t clear. Objectives: To study the impact of Ramadan fasting on international normalized ratio (INR), quality of anticoagulation, dose of warfarin used and blood osmolarity. Methods: 18 patients were followed-up prospectively for 3 months (pre- Ramadan, Ramadan and post-Ramadan months). Patients presented for weekly visits in which blood samples were obtained. Results: No significant difference in INR and warfarin dose was found between Ramadan month, and months before and after it. The post-Ramadan INR was significantly larger than pre-Ramadan (p = 0.004). Blood osmolarity was significantly lower during Ramadan compared to pre- and post-Ramadan months. Abstract The lateral costal artery has sometimes been identified as the culprit for the "steal phenomenon" after coronary artery bypass grafting, besides being occasionally used for myocardial revascularization. Its branches make anastomoses with the internal thoracic artery through lateral intercostal arteries. We aim to report, on three cases, the clinical significance of a well-developed lateral costal artery after coronary artery bypass grafting. Two out of three patients who underwent coronary artery bypass graft surgery in our center between June 2010 and August 2017, applied to us with stable angina pectoris, while the third one was diagnosed with acute coronary syndrome after applying to the emergency department. In coronary cineangiography, in all three cases, a well-developed accessory vessel arising from the proximal 2.5 cm segment of the left internal thoracic artery coursed as far as the 6th rib was detected, and it was confirmed to be the lateral costal artery. A stable angina pectoris in two of the patients was thought to be the result of steal phenomenon caused by the well-developed lateral costal artery. In the two cases with stable angina pectoris the lateral costal artery was obliterated via coil embolization. In the other case with the proximal left anterior descending artery stenosis, before percutaneous coronary intervention, the lateral costal artery was obliterated via coil embolization and the occluded subclavian artery was stented. Routine visualization in cineangiography and satisfactory surgical exploration of the left internal thoracic artery could be very helpful to identify any possible accessory branch of the left internal thoracic artery like the lateral costal artery.

Abstract Objective: The effects of energy source on the maintenance of sinus rhythm and the contribution of demographic characteristics to the case selection in patients submitted to ablation performed concurrently with mitral valve surgery were analyzed. Methods: Cryothermal (n=42; 43.8%) and radiofrequency (n=54; 56.3%) energy were employed in 96 patients submitted to mitral valve replacement and Cox maze IV procedure. Patients were called for control visits between 15 days and 12 months after discharge. The causal relationship between recurrence of atrial fibrillation and factors such as left atrial diameter, C-reactive protein, hypertension, left ventricular ejection fraction, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and body mass index was determined. Results: Maintenance rates of the sinus rhythm with radiofrequency and cryoablation were 97.6% and 96.3%, respectively, in the first postoperative month, whereas at the 12th postoperative month were 88.1% and 83.3%. No significant difference was found between groups in relation to the energy source. Sensitivity and specificity for left atrial diameter with a cut-off value of 50.5 mm were 85.7% and 70.7%, respectively. Sensitivity and specificity for C-reactive protein with a cut-off value of 12 mg/dL on the 15th postoperative day were 83.3% and 88.9%, respectively. The effect of body mass index on atrial fibrillation recurrence was 3.2 times. Sensitivity and specificity for left ventricular ejection fraction 37% cut-off value were 96.3% and 11.4%, respectively. Atrial fibrillation in hypertensive cases was 5.3 times more. In patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, recurrence of atrial fibrillation was 40%. The causal relation between recurrence of atrial fibrillation and the studied factors was established. Conclusion: Demographic characteristics have a significant impact on ablation efficiency, while the type of energy source does not.

Abstract Among all cystic echinococcosis cases, only 0.5%-2% exhibit a cardiac involvement. Only 10% of these become symptomatic. Considering the long time interval between the start of infestation and symptoms to occur, it is hard to diagnose cystic echinococcosis. When detected, even if it is asymptomatic, intramyocardial hydatid cyst requires surgical intervention due to risks of spontaneous rupture and anaphylaxis. In literature, no case of hydatid cyst located in the coronary arterial wall has been reported. Twenty-two-year-old male patient with previous history of pulmonary cystic echinococcosis was referred to us with typical symptoms of coronary artery disease. Coronary cineangiography revealed proximal left diagonal artery (LAD) occlusion. Pre-operative transthoracic echocardiography of the patient planned to undergo coronary artery bypass grafting unveiled an intracoronary calcified cystic mass. In operation, the calcified cystic mass with well-defined borders and size of 2x2 cm located within wall of proximal segment of the LAD artery was excised and double bypass with left internal thoracic artery (LITA) and great saphenous vein grafts to the LAD and first diagonal arteries, respectively, was done. Pathological analysis of the mass revealed it to be an inactive calcified hydatid cyst. Echinococcal IgG-ELISA test was positive. 12-week oral albendazole treatment (2x400 mg/day) was launched postoperatively and the patient was discharged on 7th postoperative day.

Abstract Objective: The aims of this study were to determine whether the detection of preoperative clopidogrel resistance in patients undergoing cardiac surgery while using clopidogrel could play a guiding role in the prediction of postoperative excessive bleeding, transfusion requirements, and risks and to provide clinically significant data. Methods: Two hundred and twenty-two patients [median age: 59.4 (38-83) years; 38 females] undergoing emergency and elective coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgeries in our clinic were evaluated prospectively. Patients with multiple systemic diseases, other than diabetes mellitus (DM) and hypertension (HT), were excluded. Patients receiving clopidogrel were also evaluated for clopidogrel resistance and grouped according to the results of this test. Assessments of platelet functions were performed by multiplate impedance aggregometry method and adenosine diphosphate test. Results: The use of postoperative fresh blood replacement and platelet transfusion was higher in patients receiving clopidogrel than in those not receiving it (P=0.001, P=0.018). DM, HT, myocardial infarction, and the number of presentation to the emergency room were significantly higher in patients receiving clopidogrel than in those not receiving it (P0.05). Conclusion: We think that resistance studies in patients receiving clopidogrel before cardiac surgery are not efficient to predict bleeding and bleeding-related complications in patients undergoing emergency and elective CABG surgeries.

Abstract Objective: In our clinic, we aimed to investigate the effect of preoperative risk factors and postoperative complications on reoperation and mortality in cases with Behçet's disease which presents very rare coronary artery involvement. Methods: Thirteen patients with Behçet's Disease who had undergone coronary artery bypass grafting in our center between 2003 and 2015 were analyzed. We evaluated the clinical and laboratory findings, complications and mortality rates of our patients in light of the literature. Results: The mean age was 38.5 (30-55; 3 women). The mean time from onset of Behçet's disease to coronary artery disease was 4,7 (3-11) years. Fifty-four percent of the patients were asymptomatic. Coronary artery disease of these was exposed while peripheral vascular surgery was planned due to complications of Behçet's disease. Symptomatic patients presented angina pectoris (31%), acute coronary syndrome (8%) and arrhythmia (8%). In coronary pathology of patients, distal type obstruction (31%), aneurysm and pseudoaneurysm (31%), proximal segment thrombus (15%), chronic type stenosis and occlusions (31%) were present. Early mortality (15%) was due to acute myocardial infarction while the late mortality (15%) was due to cerebral and gastrointestinal bleeding. Reoperation was due to bleeding in one case on the 1st postoperative day and due to acute pulmonary embolism in another case in the 3rdpostoperative year. Conclusion: In Behçet's disease, coronary artery bypass grafting is a procedure with high mortality, especially in the acute period. The on-pump surgery technique in these cases can be safely performed for multiple bypasses and in patients above 40 years old.

This study aims to investigate the curative effects of Morin, a flavonoid, against arsenic toxicity in 3T3 embryonic fibroblast cells and its effect on the molecular mechanisms of cells. The cytotoxicity and viability of the cells were measured by MTT and LDH tests. Arsenic (0.74 μM) was used to trigger toxicity and Morin (50 μM) was used for treatment. The levels of oxidative stress biomarkers and the activities of antioxidant enzymes were measured by spectrophotometric method, and inflammatory markers were measured by ELISA method. While mRNA expression levels of Bax, Bcl-2 levels, and Caspase-3 activity were measured by qRT-PCR technique, TUNEL staining was performed to detect DNA breaks and DAPI staining to visualize nuclear changes. Protein structures were retrieved from the protein data bank. OpenBabel and Autodock programs were used for the molecular docking study. Morin rescued the 3T3 embryonic fibroblast cells exposed to arsenic. However, Arsenic decreased the activities of antioxidant enzymes in cells and significantly increased oxidative stress, inflammation, and apoptosis. Morin treatment reduced oxidative damage and TNF-α and IL-1β levels. Arsenic-induced Caspase-3 mRNA expression level and Bax protein mRNA expression level were significantly increased, while Bcl-2 mRNA expression level was significantly decreased. While Caspase-3 mRNA expression level and Bax protein mRNA expression level decreased with morin treatment, Bcl-2 mRNA expression level increased significantly. Molecular docking study results showed good binding affinity of morin in SOD, GSH-Px, Bax, Bcl-2, Caspase-3, TNF-α, and IL-1β structures. Background: This study investigates the protective effects of etomidate against oxidative damage in an experimental model of ovarian ischemia-reperfusion injury., Methods: A total of 24 female rats were randomized into three groups. Group 1 served as the control. Group 2 underwent an ovarian torsion/detorsion procedure. Group 3 underwent similar procedures as Group 2; additionally, 4 mg/kg of etomidate was administered intraperitoneally 30 minutes before ovarian detorsion. Blood samples were analyzed for lipid peroxidation, pro-inflammatory cytokine levels, and antioxidant enzyme activity RESULTS: Biochemical analysis of blood samples revealed reductions in pro-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-1 Beta (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p=0.005, p=0.016, and p<0.001, respectively). Additionally, a decrease in malondialdehyde (MDA) levels was observed in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p<0.001). In contrast, activities of antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-PX), were significantly increased in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p=0.031 and p=0.001, respectively). Furthermore, Group 3 demonstrated notable reductions in histopathological scores for follicular degeneration, vascular occlusion, bleeding, and inflammation compared to Group 2 (p<0.001, p<0.001, p<0.001, and p=0.001, respectively)., Conclusion: Etomidate alleviates ischemia-reperfusion injury in a rat ovarian torsion-detorsion model by improving both histopathological and biochemical outcomes.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the histopathological and biochemical effects of ketamine on penile tissues following ischemia-reperfusion injury induced by priapism., Methods: Twenty-four male rats were randomized into three groups. Group 1 served as the control group. Group 2 underwent the priapism model to induce ischemia-reperfusion injury. Group 3, the treatment group, experienced a similar ischemia-reperfusion model as Group 2; additionally, 50 mg/kg of ketamine was administered intraperitoneally just before reperfusion. Blood biochemical analyses and penile histopathological evaluations were performed., Results: In Group 3, significant improvements were observed in all histopathological scores, including desquamation, edema, inflammation, and vasocongestion compared to Group 2 (p<0.001). Blood biochemical analyses showed that the malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were recorded as 10 in Group 2, with a significant decrease in Group 3 (p=0.013). Similarly, proinflammatory cytokine levels, including interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), were found to be suppressed in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p=0.003, p=0.022, and p=0.028, respectively). Antioxidant enzyme activities, such as glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), were higher in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p=0.016 and p=0.024, respec-tively)., Conclusion: Ketamine is an effective anesthetic agent in alleviating the effects of penile ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Purpose The purpose of this research is to examine the impact of syringic acid on ischemia-reperfusion injury in cavernosal tissue, utilizing a rat model of induced priapism. Materials and methods A total of 24 rats were allocated into three groups. Group 1 was designated as the control group, while Group 2 underwent ischemia-reperfusion injury assessment using the priapism model. Group 3 underwent the same procedures as Group 2, with the addition of intraperitoneal administration of syringic acid (100 mg/kg) 60 min after priapism initiation. All rats underwent penectomy, and sufficient blood samples were collected. Histopathological assessment of penile cavernosal tissue involved grading tissue damage, inflammation, vasocongestion, desquamation, and edema on a scale of 0-3 (0: normal, 1: mild, 2: moderate, 3: severe). Result Significant differences were observed among the three groups in terms of IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha levels (p=0.001 and p<0.001, respectively). IL-1 beta and TNF-alpha levels in Group 2 were found to be significantly higher than Group 3 (p=0.003 and p=0.004). There was also a significant difference among the three groups in terms of median MDA levels (p<0.001). Furthermore, the median MDA level in Group 2 was found to be significantly higher than that in Group 3 (p<0.001). While significant differences were observed among the three groups in terms of median SOD and GSH-px levels, no significant difference was found among the groups in terms of median PC levels (p=0.004, p= 0.048, and p=0.159, respectively). In direct microscopic examination, a significant improvement in pathological scores was noted in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p<0.001). Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess the effectiveness of syringic acid in preventing ischemia-reperfusion injury following detorsion in a rat model of induced testicular torsion., Material and Methods: In our study, a total of 24 rats, eight in each group, were used. Group 1 served as the control group. Group 2 underwent testicular torsion and detorsion. Group 3 underwent the same procedures as Group 2, but also received 100 mg/kg syringic acid immediately following ischemia. Spectrophotometric analysis was performed on blood samples, and the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), as well as the values of malondialdehyde (MDA), were evaluated under direct microscopic examination of the testis to determine tissue injury. The architecture of the seminiferous tubules and spermatogenesis processes were graded using the Johnsen and Cosentino scoring systems., Results: The mean value of MDA was higher in Group 2 compared to the other groups (p < 0.001). Group 3 demonstrated a decline in the concentrations of proinflammatory cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, and interleukin-1 beta, as indicated by biochemical analysis of blood samples, when compared to Group 2 (p-values: 0.045, 0.001, and <0.001, respectively). Introduction: Sclerostin is a glycoprotein known as a negative regulator of bone formation, predominantly expressed by mature  osteocytes. There is no causative evidence information on the role of sclerostin in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in humans., Aim: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between serum sclerostin levels and oxidative status and biochemical parameters in T2DM patients and healthy people., Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study, conducted in a clinical trial center, included 45 subjects with T2DM and 45 subjects as controls., Results: Serum sclerostin, total oxidative status (TOS), albumin, and ferritin levels were significantly higher in T2DM patients than in the control group (p<0.05). Total antioxidant status (TAS) was significantly higher in the control group (p<0.05). There was a weak positive correlation between sclerostin and TOS (r=0.23, p=0.03) and a weak negative correlation between sclerostin and TAS (r=-0.28, p=0.03)., Conclusions: We have demonstrated that serum sclerostin levels increase in patients with T2DM and that the increased sclerostin levels are associated with oxidative stress., (This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the CC0 Public Domain Dedication.)

Purpose: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common and fatal malignancies in humans, still leading to serious morbidity and mortality. We here aimed to investigate the effects of flavonoid apigenin, which is considered to have anti-tumoral activity on CRC with high epidemiological prevalence, on cell proliferation and cell survivals, and the positive and negative dose-dependent effects of genetic or mutational alterations in SWH pathway components on HT29 CRC cell lines. Methods: Human colon cancer cell lines HT-29 were commercially available. In each flask, 5 groups were formed, each of which consists of 5,000 cells for different dose groups and the cells were plated. After a 24 and 48 h incubation period, cytotoxicity values were measured by MTT assay and gene expression was assessed by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis method. Results: Application of 12.5 and 25 nM of apigenin significantly increased cell death in HT29 cell lines. LATS1, STK3 and TP53 gene expression decreased in the same dose groups compared to control and other groups. Conclusion: It has been concluded that TP53 gene is strongly correlated with LATS1 and STK3 genes among the SWH pathway factors in the progression of CRC and could be used as an important marker for early detection of malignant transmission. Introduction: Henoch-Schönlein Purpura (HSP) is a systemic vasculitic syndrome characterized by non-thrombocytopenic purpura, arthritis/arthralgia, abdominal pain, and glomerulonephritis. The pathogenesis of HSP has not been clearly identified. Oxidative damage has a role in the pathogenesis of most cases., Aim: This study aimed to evaluate changes of oxidative stress by studying parameters like superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and malondialdehyde (MDA) in an attempt to identify the role of oxidative stress in HSP from another perspective., Materials and Methods: This study enrolled 23 pediatric patients (ten girls and thirteen boys) diagnosed with HSP who were under follow-up at Sutcu Imam University School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics between 2014 and 2016 and twenty healthy children as the control group. The parents of all subjects gave informed consent to participate in the study. In the HSP group, the beginning season of the illness and the systemic involvement during follow-up were determined. Blood specimens were obtained at presentation before any treatment was started. SOD, CAT activities, and MDA values in erythrocyte and plasma samples were compared between the patient group and the healthy children., Results: Twenty-three patients with HSP (13 males, 10 females) and 20 healthy children participated in this study. The mean age of the HSP cases was 8.21±3.78 years (range 2-16 years) and of the controls was 8.6±4.2 (range 3-14 years). The mean MDA value was 2.95±0.71 nmol/ml in the patient group and 2.67±0.66 nmol/ml in the control group (p=0.787). The mean level of the CAT enzyme was 1.32±0.35 U/g Hb in the patient group and 7.8±1.74 U/g Hb in the control group (p=0.001). The mean levels of the SOD enzyme were 3.06±0.85 U/g Hb in the patient group and 0.97±0.36 U/g Hb in the control group (p=0.001)., Conclusions: Although high MDA levels support the role of lipid peroxidation in the pathogenesis of HSP, statistical significance was not reached owing to a limited number of our patients. The reduced CAT enzyme activity is consistent with the findings of previous reports. Introduction: Very few studies have evaluated the association between mercury exposure and oxidative stress in humans, particularly in children., Aim: This is the first report where we aimed to determine the oxidative stress status of children who were accidentally exposed to elemental mercury., Materials and Methods: In the present study, the study group was composed of 86 randomly selected children poisoned by mercury; the control group was composed of 78 children who had no history of mercury exposure. At admission, blood samples were collected. Blood superoxide dismutase activity, catalase enzyme activity, and glutathione peroxidase activity were measured by Fridovich, Beutler, and Lawrence Burk methods respectively, and the results were given as U/g Hb. Malondialdehyde level was measured by Ohkawa methods, and the results were given as mmol/ml., Results: Catalase activity was significantly lower in the patient group compared to the control group (1.28±0.62 vs. 3.90±0.86 U/g Hb, p=0.010). In exposed children, SOD activity was significantly higher than the controls (5936±810 vs. 2226±464 U/g Hb, p=0.03), while the GSH-Px activity was significantly lower (13.01±3.21 vs. 34.97±7.32 U/g Hb, p=0.013). This experimental study aims to evaluate the efficacy of milrinone against ischaemia-reperfusion injury due to testicular torsion/detorsion. Group 1 was defined as the control group. Testicular torsion/detorsion model was performed in Group 2. Group 3 had similar procedures to the rats in Group 2. In addition, 0.5 mg/kg of milrinone was administered intraperitoneally immediately after testicular torsion in Group 3. Histopathological examinations indicated a dramatic improvement in terms of inflammation, haemorrhage, oedema, congestion, Cosentino and Johnson scores in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p = .037, p = .045, p = .018, p = .040, p = .033 and p = .03 respectively). Blood biochemical analyses, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-px) activity and total antioxidant status (TAS) levels increased significantly in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p = .001, p = .024 and p < .001). Malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl (PC), interleukin 1beta (IL-1beta), tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and total oxidant status (TOS) levels decreased in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p = .001, p = .018, p < .001, p = .036 and p = .002 respectively). This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of sinapic acid (SA) on biochemical and histopathological changes in an experimental testicular torsion-detorsion rat model. Twenty-four rats were randomised into four groups: sham group, ischemia/reperfusion (IR) group subjected to testicular torsion for 2 hr and then detorsion for 4 hr, and two groups treated with SA1 and SA2 (10 mg/kg and 20 mg/kg, by single intraperitoneal injection, 30 min before reperfusion). Serum testosterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH) were measured by an autoanalyzer, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl (PC), and nitric oxide (NO) oxidative stress parameters by spectrophotometric methods, and tumour necrosis factor (TNF-α), interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β), and interleukin 6 (IL-6) parameters by the Elisa method. In addition, immunohistochemical and histopathological examinations were performed on testicular tissues. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of serum testosterone, FSH and LH levels (p > .05). SA significantly reduced increased testicular damage, oxidative stress, inflammation, cell death and also restored decreased antioxidant enzyme activities (p < .05). Pre-treatment of rats with SA reduced testicular dysfunction and morphological changes IRI. Objective: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a heterogeneous, highly heritable, a common childhood neurobehavioural disorder resulting from complex gene-gene and gene-environment interactions. The erythropoietin (Epo)/erythropoietin receptors (EpoR) system turned out to have additional important functions in nonhematopoietic tissue. In this study, we aimed to investigate the levels of Epo and and EpoR, and also their diagnostic values in children with ADHD., Methods: A total of 70 children were included in the study, 35 drug-naive patients with ADHD (age: 6-12 years; male/female: 20/15) and 35 healthy controls (age: 6-12 years; male/female: 22/13). Serum Epo and EpoR levels was determined using a commercial sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit., Results: The results indicated that the levels of Epo decreased in patients with ADHD compared to control (p < 0.05). On the other hand, EpoR levels increased in these patients (p < 0.05). Furthermore, the ratio of Epo/EpoR was significantly lower in ADHD patients than controls (p < 0.05). Receiver operator characteristic curve analysis showed high diagnostic performance for Epo and EpoR, areas under curve were 0.980 and 1.000, respectively., Conclusion: This is the first report to investigate the association between serum Epo and EpoR levels in ADHD patients. Our results indicated that Epo may play a role in the etiology of ADHD, and Epo therapy may be beneficial in these disorders if given in addition to the routine treatment of children with ADHD. Furthermore, our results reveal possible diagnostic value of Epo and EpoR.

We suppose that apigenin may inhibit the cellular process of sepsis-induced lung injury, which is considered to be a major cause of morbidity and mortality, and may improve inflammation and oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential protective effect of apigenin in a rat model of polymicrobial sepsis. Eight groups consisting of a total of 64 female Wistar albino rats were used for this study. Pro-inflammatory (TNF-α, IL-1-β, IL-6) and anti-inflammatory (TGF-β, IL-10) cytokine levels were measured with the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay technique, oxidant/antioxidants parameters were measured using the spectrophotometric method and Bax and Caspase-3 immunohistochemical methods. TNF-α, TGF-β, IL-1β, and IL-6 levels significantly increased in the sepsis-induced group than in the control groups, while IL-10 levels decreased. Lipid peroxidase (LPO), an oxidative stress marker, increased, while the antioxidant defense parameters of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) activities, glutathione (GSH) levels decreased. Although Bax and Caspase-3 immunoreactivity and H score levels significantly increased in the sepsis group, significant decreases were found in the groups treated with apigenin. The study aimed to investigate the effects of dexmedetomidine against ischaemia-reperfusion injury occurring after priapism in a model of induced-priapism in rats. A total of 18 male rats were randomised into three groups. Group 1 was the control group. A priapism model was performed rats in Group 2 and then ischaemia-reperfusion injury was evaluated. Group 3 had similar procedures to the rats in Group 2. Rats in Group 3 additionally had 100 μg/kg dexmedetomidine administered intraperitoneally immediately after reperfusion. Blood and tissue samples were analysed. Biochemical analysis of blood samples revealed a decrease in the levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines including interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 Beta), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumour necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p:.04, p:.009 and p:.009, respectively). Similarly, the highest malondialdehyde (MDA) level was in Group 2 (p:.002). The levels of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activities were significantly higher in Group 3 than that of Group 2 (p:.037 and p:.045, respectively). Direct microscopic examinations revealed positive changes in desquamation, oedema, inflammation and vasocongestion scores in Group 3 compared to Group 2 (p:.007, p:.008, p:.007 and p:.006, respectively). Introduction: A smokeless tobacco known as Maras powder (MP) is commonly consumed in the southern region of Turkey. To the extent of our knowledge, no previous study in literature has reported acute MP intoxication in children., Aim: Our aim was to determine the clinical effects and treatment strategies of MP poisoning in children.Materials and methods: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of children <18 years of age with MP intoxication who were followed up in the Intensive Care Unit between January 2016 and April 2018 in our center., Results: Forty-one patients (M/F= 25/16) were included in this study. The mean age was 13.2±22.4 months (age range: 7 to 30 months). The patients presented with vomiting (n=23, 56%), cough (n=17, 41.5%), loss of consciousness (n=11, 26.8%), respiratory distress (n=6, 14.6%), convulsion (n=7, 17%), cyanosis (n=1, 2.4%), and abdominal pain (n=1, 2.4%) following oral ingestion of the substance. On their physical examination all patients with convulsion were in a comatose state. Thirty-two patients (78%) had tachycardia; 15 patients (36.5%) had pharyngeal hyperemia; and three (7.3%) had hiccups. Several chemicals, including environmental toxicants and clinically useful drugs, cause severe cellular damage to different organs of our body through metabolic activation to highly reactive substances such as free radicals. Carbon tetrachloride is an organic compound of which chemical formula is CCl₄. CCl 4 is strong toxic in the kidney, testicle, brain, heart, lung, other tissues, and particularly in the liver. CCl 4 is a powerful hepatoxic, nephrotoxic and prooxidant agent which is widely used to induce hepatotoxicity in experimental animals and to create hepatocellular carcinoma, hepatic fibrosis/cirrhosis and liver injury, chemical hepatitis model, renal failure model, and nephrotoxicity model in recent years. The damage-causing mechanism of CCl 4 in tissues can be explained as oxidative damage caused by lipid peroxidation which starts after the conversion of CCl 4 to free radicals of highly toxic trichloromethyl radicals (•CCl₃) and trichloromethyl peroxyl radical (•CCl₃O 2 ) via cytochrome P450 enzyme. Complete disruption of lipids (i.e., peroxidation) is the hallmark of oxidative damage. Free radicals are structures that contain one or more unpaired electrons in atomic or molecular orbitals. These toxic free radicals induce a chain reaction and lipid peroxidation in membrane-like structures rich in phospholipids, such as mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum. CCl 4 -induced lipid peroxidation is the cause of oxidative stress, mitochondrial stress, endoplasmic reticulum stress. Free radicals trigger many biological processes, such as apoptosis, necrosis, ferroptosis and autophagy. Recent researches state that the way to reduce or eliminate these CCl 4 -induced negative effects is the antioxidants originated from natural sources. For normal physiological function, there must be a balance between free radicals and antioxidants. If this balance is in favor of free radicals, various pathological conditions occur. Free radicals play a role in various pathological conditions including Pulmonary disease, ischemia / reperfusion rheumatological diseases, autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, kidney diseases, hypertension, eye diseases, neurological disorders, diabetes and aging. Free radicals are antagonized by antioxidants and quenched. Antioxidants do not only remove free radicals, but they also have anti-inflammatory, anti-allergic, antithrombotic, antiviral, and anti-carcinogenic activities. Antioxidants contain high phenol compounds and antioxidants have relatively low side effects compared to synthetic drugs. The antioxidants investigated in CCI 4 toxicity are usually antioxidants from plants and are promising because of their rich resources and low side effects. Data were investigated using PubMed, EBSCO, Embase, Web of Science, DOAJ, Scopus and Google Scholar, Carbon tetrachloride, carbon tetrachloride-induced toxicity, oxidative stress, and free radical keywords. This study aims to enlighten the damage-causing mechanism created by free radicals which are produced by CCl 4 on tissues/cells and to discuss the role of antioxidants in the prevention of tissue/cell damage. Introduction: Aim and background: the incidence of obesity has increased among children, and obesity has been considered an independent risk factor for chronic kidney disease. We aimed to determine the degree of kidney function impairment by evaluating urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) levels. Materials and methods: in total, 15 obese, 26 overweight, and 26 control adolescents aged 10 to 16 years were enrolled into the study. Urine samples were evaluated for NGAL and KIM-1 levels using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kits. We investigated the association between obesity and related comorbidities with urinary NGAL and KIM-1 excretion. Results: no significant differences were noted between the obese, overweight, and control groups in urinary NGAL and KIM-1 excretion (p = 0.327 and p = 0.917, respectively). In the obese and overweight groups urinary NGAL levels were 50.39 [30.88-74.22] in females and 26.67 [23.24-45.59] in males (p = 0.013). Also, urinary NGAL levels were increased in obese and overweight adolescents with LDL dyslipidemia at 64.12 [30.98-114.32] as compared to those without LDL dyslipidemia: 39.51 [25.59.56.37] (p = 0.024). Furthermore, a correlation was observed between insulin and homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance levels with the NGAL/creatinine ratio in the overweight group (r = 0.515; p = 0.008, and r = 0.483; p = 0.014, respectively). Such correlation was not found in the obese group. Conclusion: the effect of obesity on renal function could not be determined in children. A longer exposure may be required for obesity-induced disruption of renal function in children. Renal function may be disrupted by dyslipidemia in obese adolescents. Furthermore, obesity impaired renal function in female adolescents. The normalization of these urinary markers as related to urine creatinine should be discussed.

Cadmium (Cd) is a significant ecotoxic heavy metal that adversely affects all biological processes of humans, animals and plants. Exposure to acute and chronic Cd damages many organs in humans and animals (e.g. lung, liver, brain, kidney, and testes). In humans, the Cd concentration at birth is zero, but because the biological half-life is long (about 30 years in humans), the concentration increases with age. The industrial developments of the last century have significantly increased the use of this metal. Especially in developing countries, this consumption is higher. Oxidative stress is the imbalance between antioxidants and oxidants. Cd increases reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and causes oxidative stress. Excess cellular levels of ROS cause damage to proteins, nucleic acids, lipids, membranes and organelles. This damage has been associated with various diseases. These include cancer, hypertension, ischemia/perfusion, cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, insulin resistance, acute respiratory distress syndrome, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, asthma, skin diseases, chronic kidney disease, eye diseases, neurodegenerative diseases (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and Huntington disease). Natural antioxidants are popular drugs that are used by the majority of people and have few side effects. Natural antioxidants play an important role in reducing free radicals caused by Cd toxicity. Introduction: 2-AAF and DEN are well-known liver toxicants commonly used to stimulate tumors in laboratory animals., Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of octreotide on DEN-induced and 2-AAF-supplemented hepatocarcinogenesis in Wistar albino rats., Materials and Methods: In this study, 64 Wistar albino rats were divided into 8 groups. DEN (175 mg/kg) initiated and 2-AAF (20 mg/kg) promoted liver carcinogenesis in rats. The tumor growth inhibitor octreotide (300 μg/kg) was used. Rats were sacrificed at the end of experiment and their liver tissues were taken for the study. SOD, GSH-Px, CAT activities, NO and MDA levels were measured spectrophotometrically. Also, Hsp70 and 8-OHdG was measured by the ELISA method., Results: In group 7, MDA, 8-OHdG, and Hsp70 levels were significantly increased. In addition, SOD, GSH-Px activity was significantly reduced in this group. MDA, 8-OHdG and Hsp70 levels were significantly reduced in Group 8, which received octreotide for treatment., Conclusion: DEN and 2-AAF cause very serious liver damage. Octreotide protects the liver from carcinogenesis, increases the activity of cellular antioxidant enzymes and helps reduce DNA damage. Objective: In this study, the aim was to investigate the biochemical, physiological and histological changes that occur in masticatory muscles of the masticatory system with aging., Design: In this study, 14 BALB/c mice were used. Animals were divided into two equal groups of seven. Group I was organized as the group of young animals (n = 7) and Group II as the group of adult animals (n = 7). After routine histological follow-up was performed, the tissues were embedded in paraffin. 4-5 μm thick cross-sections were taken from paraffin-embedded tissues and they were stained with Haemotoxylin and Eosin Type I collagen and Matrix metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) immunohistochemically., Results: It was observed that there was a decrease and shrinking in blood vessels due to aging. In young mice, Type I collagen and MMP-2 immunoreactivity in the masseter muscle tissue showed low staining, while Type I collagen and MMP-2 immunoreactivity in the temporal muscle tissue showed moderate staining. Type I collagen and MMP-2 immunoreactivity were significantly higher in the masseter and temporal muscles of elderly mice (p = 0.001). In the H-score evaluation, MMP-2 immune reactivity was significantly lower in young mice than in older mice (p = 0.001)., Conclusion: It was determined that severe pain complications and functional losses are likely to occur with the increase of degeneration due to aging of masticator muscles., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Objectives: The effectiveness of the myo-inositol oxygenase (MIOX) enzyme was investigated in the diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI)., Methods: In total, 40 rats were divided into 5 groups (n = 8, for each group) while left kidney ischemia-reperfusion was implemented in groups 2, 3, 4 and 5. Group 1 was the control group. Group 2 underwent 1‑hour ischemia and 2‑hour reperfusion. Group 3 underwent 1‑hour ischemia and 4‑hour reperfusion. Group 4 underwent 2‑hour ischemia and 2‑hour reperfusion. Group 5 underwent 2‑hour ischemia and 4‑hour reperfusion., Results: Serum creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels in all ischemia-reperfusion groups were higher than in the control group (p<0.001). Serum MIOX level was higher in groups 2, 3 and 4 than in group 1 (p=0.002). Tissue MIOX level was lower in groups 2, 4, and 5 than in group 1 (p=0.039). Serum and tissue neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin levels were not significantly different between the groups. The injury level in histopathologic examination was as follows: group 1

Purpose: This study aimed to demonstrate the effects of oxytocin on penile tissues in ischemia-reperfusion injury developed after priapism., Methods: Forty Wistar Albino strain male rats were divided into four groups. The control group (n = 10) was not intervened. In Group 2, a rat model of priapism was constructed and maintained for 1 h. In Group 3, reperfusion was ensured for 30 min following priapism. Rats in Group 4 rats were given oxytocin 30 min before the induction of reperfusion following priapism. All rats were penectomized, and adequate amounts of blood sample were drawn. Inflammation, vasocongestion, desquamation, and edema in penile tissue were scored between 0 and 3 points (0: normal, 1: mild, 2: moderate, 3: severe) to evaluate the severity of tissue damage. The activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), and nitric oxide (NO) in blood samples were determined spectrophotometrically., Results: In histopathological examination, statistically significant positive changes were detected in vasocongestion, inflammation, desquamation, and edema scores in Group 4 than in Group 2 and Group 3 (p < 0.001). Biochemical test results revealed that NO levels were significantly lower in Group 4 than in Group 3 (p < 0.001). Serum GSH-Px activities in Group 4 significantly increased when compared with the other groups 2 and 3 (p = 0.002, p = 0.001, respectively). There was no statistical difference among the groups regarding SOD activities and MDA levels (p > 0.05)., Conclusions: Oxytocin protected against priapism-induced ischemia-reperfusion injury developed in cavernosal tissue as observed based on histopathological and biochemical evidence. Although this is an experimental study, oxytocin can be thought as an alternative drug in the treatment of priapism.

Heavy metals taken into the organism can make the toxic effects on the metabolism in various ways. For example, they may interact with proteins to alter and inhibit their enzymatic and structural functions. Mercury is one of the toxic elements that are widely distributed in nature. Mercury toxicity poses a serious threat to human health. It is an element that causes oxidative stress to increase in individuals, leading to tissue damage. Oxidative stress is the result of the imbalance between the production of oxidative species and cellular antioxidant defense. Phytotherapy continues to play an important role in health care. Natural phytotherapeutic antioxidants, exhibit a broad sequence of biological impacts, including anti-oxidative stress, anti-aging, anti-toxicicity and anticancer. Many studies have also shown that the phytotherapeutic agents play an important role in the removal of mercury from the tissue and in reducing oxidative stress. Our goal in this review was to investigate alternative ways of extracting the mercury in the tissue.

Hepatocellular carcinoma is one of the most common cancers in the world, and it is influenced by agents such as DEN, 2-AAF, phenobarbital, alcohol, aflatoxin B1 metabolite or hepatitis viruses (B and C). Oxidative stress is becoming recognized as a key factor in the progression of hepatocarcinogenesis. Reactive oxygen species can play a leading role in initiation and promotion of hepatic carcinogenesis. The metabolites of DEN Diethylnitrosamine (DEN) mediate the binding of tumour promoters by covalently binding to the DNA with one or two oxidation-providing electrons. 2-AAF is the inducer of DEN, and it is involved in tumour formation in the bladder and liver. Reactive Oxygen species (ROS); carbohydrates, lipids, DNA and enzymes, such as affect all important structures. Additionally, an excessive amount of ROS is highly toxic to cells. Antioxidants are protects against ROS, toxic substances, carcinogens. This review focuses on the literature on studies of Hepatic Carcinogenesis, oxidative stress and antioxidant therapy.

Study Design: Oxidative/nitrosative stress in vertebral endplates of patients with low back pain and Modic changes (MCs) (types I, II, and III) endplate changes on magnetic resonance imaging., Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the levels of oxidative/nitrosative stress biomarkers in patients with MCs., Summary of Background Data: Degenerated discs and endplate abnormalities is postulated as a possible source of low back pain. Oxidative/nitrosative stress plays an important the role in various human diseases. However, the presence of oxidative/nitrosative stress has not been studied in patients with low back pain and endplate changes on magnetic resonance imaging., Methods: Patients with MCI, II, and III (n = 32) and age- and sex-matched controls subjects (n = 15) were enrolled in this study. Also, 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT) and nitric oxide levels as nitrosative stress biomarkers were measured with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Also, the activities of catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), and the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) as oxidative stress biomarkers were determined on spectrophotometer., Results: Oxidative/nitrosative stress was confirmed by the significant elevation in nitric oxide, 3-NT, MDA and decreased of CAT and SOD activities in MCI compared with other MCs and the control group (P < 0.05). The highest CAT and SOD activities were found in patients with MCII compared with the other MCs and the control group. However, the levels of nitric oxide, 3-NT, and MDA showed moderate increase in this group (P < 0.05). In addition, the levels of nitrosative stress biomarkers in patients with MCIII were approximated to the control values (P > 0.05). However, the levels of oxidative stress biomarkers in patients with MCIII were slightly higher than that of the control group (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: Our findings indicated that oxidative/nitrosative stress in patients with MCI may be aggravated as a result of oxidant/antioxidant imbalance and it may cause formation of the lesion in these patients. However, the increased antioxidant activities and MDA, 3-NT levels in patients with MCII and MCIII may be an adaptative response to against oxidative/nitrosative stress., Level of Evidence: 4.

Purpose: We aimed to evaluate the effect of 2100 MHz radiofrequency radiation on the parotid gland of rats in short and relatively long terms., Material and Methods: Thirty Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups. Groups A and B served as the control groups (for 10 days and 40 days, respectively), and each group included six rats. Groups C and D were composed of nine rats each, and they were the exposure groups. The rats were exposed to 2100 MHz radiofrequency radiation emitted by a generator, simulating a third generation mobile phone for 6 hours/day, 5 days/week, for 10 or 40 days. Following exposure, the rats were sacrificed and parotid glands were removed. Histopathological and biochemical examinations were performed., Results: Although there were no histopathological changes in the control groups except for two animals in group A and three animals in group B, the exposure groups C (10 days) and D (40 days) showed numerous histopathological changes regarding salivary gland damage including acinar epithelial cells, interstitial space, ductal system, vascular system, nucleus, amount of cytoplasm and variations in cell size. The histopathological changes were more prominent in group D compared to group C. There was statistically significant different parameter regarding variation in cell size between the groups B and D (p=0.036)., Conclusion: The parotid gland of rats showed numerous histopathological changes after exposure to 2100 MHz radiofrequency radiation, both in the short and relatively long terms.
