Under illumination with 450 nm light, porous BiVO4 photoelectrodes support photoeletrochemical Kolbe coupling with up to near quantitative faradaic efficiency and apparent quantum yield of 12% at applied voltages

Melanins are a class of conjugated biopolymers with varying compositions and functions, which have a variety of potential medical and technical applications. Here, this work examines the conjugated polymers derived from a variety of phenolic monomers (catechol (CAT), levodopa (DOPA), and homogentisic acid (HGA)), using a selection of different analytical chemistry techniques to compare their properties with a view to understanding structure–function relations. The polymers display measurable conductivity, with electronic properties tuned by the functional groups pendant on the polymer backbones (which served as dopants) suggesting their potential for application in electronic devices.

A one-step method for the conversion of nitroarenes into phenols under operationally simple, transition-metal-free conditions is described. This denitrative functionalisation protocol provides a concise and economical alternative to conventional three-step synthetic sequences. Experimental and computational studies suggest that unactivated nitroarenes may be substituted via an electron-catalysed radical-nucleophilic substitution (SRN1) chain mechanism.

The design and development of an oxime-based hydroxylation reagent, which can chemoselectively convert aryl halides (X = F, Cl, Br, I) into phenols under operationally simple, transition-metal-free conditions is described. Key to the success of this approach was the identification of a reducing oxime anion which can interact and couple with open-shell aryl radicals. We report a new general method for trapping short-lived radicals, based on a homolytic substitution reaction SH2′. This departure from conventional radical trapping by addition or radical-radical cross-coupling results in high sensitivity, detailed structural information, and general applicability of the new approach. The radical traps in this method are terminal alkenes possessing a nitroxide leaving group (e.g., allyl-TEMPO derivatives). The trapping process thus yields stable products which can be stored and subsequently analyzed by mass spectrometry (MS) supported by well-established techniques such as isotope exchange, tandem MS, and high-performance liquid chromatography-MS. The new method was applied to a range of model radical reactions in both liquid and gas phases including a photoredox-catalyzed thiol-ene reaction and alkene ozonolysis. An unprecedented range of radical intermediates was observed in complex reaction mixtures, offering new mechanistic insights. Gas-phase radicals can be detected at concentrations relevant to atmospheric chemistry.

Melanins are a class of biopolymers that are widespread in nature, with diverse origins, compositions, and functions, and their chemical and optoelectronic properties render them potentially useful for application in materials science for various biotechnological applications. For patients with alkaptonuria, the accumulation of homogentisic acid (HGA) in their bodies is associated with the concomitant deposition of pyomelanin, which is a pigment that contains significant amounts of polymerized HGA (polyHGA) in the bodily tissues of the patients. The polymerization of HGA under various different conditions in vitro is investigated using a selection of different analytical chemistry techniques to understand if there may be a correlation between the conditions and pigment deposition in vivo, and their potential for application as green/sustainable and components of electronic devices.

A PEG-Tyr block copolymer forms a kinetically stable colloidal solution in water at room temperature which undergoes an irreversible conversion to a gel phase upon heating. A micellar solution and a gel can therefore be studied under identical experimental conditions. This made it possible to compare physical properties and chemical reactivity of micelles and gels in identical chemical environments and under identical conditions. EPR spectra of the spin-labelled copolymer showed that tyrosine mobility in gels was slightly reduced compared to micelles. Chemical reactivity was studied using photochemical degradation of tyrosine and tyrosine dimerization, in the absence and in the presence of an Fe(iii) salt. The reactivity trends were explained by reduced tyrosine mobility in the gel environment. The largest reactivity difference in gels and micelles was observed for bimolecular dityrosine formation which was also attributed to the reduction in molecular mobility.

Host-guest interactions between nitroxide stable radicals and supramolecular coordination cages were investigated using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy in water and acetonitrile. TEMPO showed negligible association with the cages in water, while 4-oxo-TEMPO bound with a strength comparable to that previously reported for related ketones. Carboxylic acid-functionalized nitroxides bound strongly to the acetonitrile-soluble coordination cages. In all cases, host-guest complex formation resulted in significant decreases in the molecular tumbling rate of the guests, with tumbling becoming strongly anisotropic. The polarity of the cage environment in both solvents was found to be intermediate between water and acetonitrile.

Nanoparticles could conceal bioactive proteins during therapeutic delivery, avoiding side effects. Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) coated with a temperature-sensitive polymer were tested for protein release. We show that coated SPIONs can entrap test proteins and release them in a temperature-controlled manner in a biological system. Magnetically heating SPIONs triggered protein release at bulk solution temperatures below the polymer transition. The entrapped growth factor Wnt3a was inactive until magnetically triggered release, upon which it could increase mesenchymal stem cell proliferation. Once the polymer transition will be chemically adjusted above body temperature, this system could be used for targeted cell stimulation in model animals and humans.

EPR spectroscopy was used to monitor formation of free radicals in human hair upon UV irradiation. While the EPR spectra of brown hair were dominated by melanin signal, those of white hair were keratin-derived. The decay of UV induced keratin radicals was enhanced at increased ambient humidity. We argue that at higher humidity the swollen hair provides a more liquid-like environment, and higher molecular mobility in this environment leads to faster radical reactions. This interpretation is consistent with the increased UV-triggered protein damage in hair at high humidity as demonstrated by the protein loss, MALDI-TOF and FT-IR data.

Bioremediation from disabled self-destruction Explosives used in mining, construction, or military operations leave behind contaminated soils. Although bioremediation could help, plants do not thrive on these soils. Johnston et al. have now found out why (see the Perspective by Noctor). An enzyme found in plant mitochondria and chloroplasts spins out of control when given the explosive TNT, generating toxic reactive oxygen species and subverting biochemical pathways. With the key enzyme disabled, the plants are better at tolerating and accumulating TNT. These results point the way to future bioremediation and herbicide strategies. A dinuclear, butadiene-bridged complex, trans-μ2:η2,η2-1,3-butadiene-bis(trichloroplatinate(ii)) (1) was unexpectedly obtained on photolysis of acetone solutions of (NBu4)2[PtCl6].

Intramolecular spin exchange in four flexible PEG-based bis-nitroxides was studied by X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy as a function of temperature and solvent viscosity. A series of biradicals with different lengths of the ethylene glycol bridge connecting the two nitroxide groups was investigated in aqueous and mixed 1:1 i-propanol:water solutions. Conformational transitions in liquid solutions of the biradicals were analyzed, and thermodynamic parameters of the conformational reorganization were calculated from the EPR spectra. Intramolecular distances r between paramagnetic >N–O• fragments in biradicals in frozen solutions were calculated and compared with dynamic properties of the biradicals.

The formation of alginate gel from low molecular weight alginate and very low molecular weight alginate in the presence of divalent cations was investigated using Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The transition from sol to gel in the presence of divalent cations was monitored by the changes in the dynamics of spin labelled alginate. The immobilisation of the spin labelled alginate in the gel reflects the strength of interaction between the cation and alginate chain. Diffusion experiments showed that both the cation and alginate polyanion in the gel fibres can exchange with molecules in solution. In particular, we showed that dissolved alginate polyanions can replace alginates in the gel fibres, which can hence diffuse through the bulk of the gel. This illustrates the surprisingly highly dynamic nature of these gels and opens up the possibility of preparing multicomponent alginate gels via polyanion exchange process.

Monoclinic bismuth vanadate nanoparticles (nan-BiVO4) have been used for the selective photo-oxidation of benzyl alcohols (13 examples) to benzaldehydes under visible light irradiation using dioxygen as oxidant. Illumination with a blue LED (λmax = 470 nm) gave yields more than 30 times greater than bulk BiVO4 with >99% selectivity for several cases. Photo-oxidation of PhCH2OH/PhCD2OH isotopomers gave a kinetic isotope effect of 1.3 indicating that C–H bond activation is not the rate determining step in contrast to other reported photocatalysts including TiO2 and carbon nitride. Collectively, structural characterisation, spectroscopic, and reactivity data are correlated with the greater surface area of nan-BiVO4 compared to bulk BiVO4. This work aims to determine the roles of reactive oxygen species HO∙ and HO2 − in the bleaching of melanins by alkaline hydrogen peroxide. Experiments using melanosomes isolated from human hair indicated that the HO∙ radical generated in the outside solution does not contribute significantly to bleaching. However, studies using soluble Sepia melanin demonstrated that both HO2 − and HO∙ will individually bleach melanin. Additionally, when both oxidants are present, bleaching is increased dramatically in both rate and extent. Careful experimental design enabled the separation of the roles and effects of these key reactive species, HO∙ and HO2 −. Rationalisation of the results presented, and review of previous literature, allowed the postulation of a simplified general scheme whereby the strong oxidant HO∙ is able to pre-oxidise melanin units to o-quinones enabling more facile ring opening by the more nucleophilic HO2 −. In this manner the efficiency of the roles of both species is maximised.

Stable benzotriazinyl radicals (Blatter's radicals) recently attracted considerable interest as building blocks for functional materials. The existing strategies to derivatize Blatter's radicals are limited, however, and synthetic routes are complex. Here, we report that an inexpensive, commercially available, analytical reagent Nitron undergoes a previously unrecognized transformation in wet acetonitrile in the presence of air to yield a new Blatter-type radical with an amide group replacing a phenyl at the C(3)-position. This one-pot reaction of Nitron provides access to a range of previously inaccessible triazinyl radicals with excellent benchtop stabilities. Mechanistic investigation suggests that the reaction starts with a hydrolytic cleavage of the triazole ring followed by oxidative cyclization. Several derivatives of Nitron were prepared and converted into Blatter-type radicals to test the synthetic value of the new reaction. These results significantly expand the scope of using functionalized benzotriazinyls as stable radical building blocks., Blatter's radicals are highly valuable stable organic free radicals, comprising a heterocyclic ring system functionalized with a heteroaryl or alkyl group at the C-3 position. Here, the authors report a synthetic strategy to obtain Blatter's radical substituted with an amine and amide group.

Non-thermal plasmas were used as radical initiators in three radical chain reactions: dehalogenation, 5-exo-trig cyclisation and trifluoromethylation with the Togni II reagent. The use of non-volatile solvents (or solvent-free conditions) gave high yields in all reactions under optimised conditions. Short reaction times and mild conditions make this method an attractive alternative to conventional radical initiators.

We describe the synthesis of spin-labeled bis-ureas which coassemble with bis-urea gelators and report on self-assembly as detected using electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR). Specifically, EPR detects the gel-sol transition and allows us to quantify how much spin-label is immobilized within the gel fibers and how much is present in mobile solvent pools-as controlled by temperature, gelator structure, and thermal history. EPR is also able to report on the initial self-assembly processes below the gelation threshold which are not macroscopically visible and appears to be more sensitive than NMR to intermediate-sized nongelating oligomeric species. By studying dilute solutions of gelator molecules and using either single or double spin-labels, EPR allows quantification of the initial steps of the hierarchical self-assembly process in terms of cooperativity and association constant. Finally, EPR enables us to estimate the degree of gel-fiber solvation by probing the distances between spin-labels. Comparison of experimental data against the predicted distances assuming the nanofibers are only composed of gelator molecules indicates a significant difference, which can be assigned to the presence of a quantifiable number of explicit solvent molecules. In summary, EPR provides unique data and yields powerful insight into how molecular-scale mobility and solvation impact on assembly of supramolecular gels.

The polymerisation inhibitor, 2-nitrophenol reacts with radicals generated in self-initiated thermal styrene polymerisation to form the unexpected benzoxazine 1. We propose the mechanism for the formation of 1 and show that it is produced by a radical mediated C–H activation.

Non-thermal atmospheric pressure ('cold') plasmas have received increased attention in recent years due to their significant biomedical potential. The reactions of cold plasma with the surrounding atmosphere yield a variety of reactive species, which can define its effectiveness. While efficient development of cold plasma therapy requires kinetic models, model benchmarking needs empirical data. Experimental studies of the source of reactive species detected in aqueous solutions exposed to plasma are still scarce. Biomedical plasma is often operated with He or Ar feed gas, and a specific interest lies in investigation of the reactive species generated by plasma with various gas admixtures (O2, N2, air, H2O vapor, etc.) Such investigations are very complex due to difficulties in controlling the ambient atmosphere in contact with the plasma effluent. In this work, we addressed common issues of 'high' voltage kHz frequency driven plasma jet experimental studies. A reactor was developed allowing the exclusion of ambient atmosphere from the plasma-liquid system. The system thus comprised the feed gas with admixtures and the components of the liquid sample. This controlled atmosphere allowed the investigation of the source of the reactive oxygen species induced in aqueous solutions by He-water vapor plasma. The use of isotopically labelled water allowed distinguishing between the species originating in the gas phase and those formed in the liquid. The plasma equipment was contained inside a Faraday cage to eliminate possible influence of any external field. The setup is versatile and can aid in further understanding the cold plasma-liquid interactions chemistry.

The catalytic formation of hydroxyl radicals in oxidative hair colourant systems in the presence of added copper ions was measured and quantified using a colorimetric probe N,N'-(5-nitro-1,3-phenylene)bisglutaramide. Also monitored in the same experiments was the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. The first set of experiments was performed using aqueous model solutions containing the key oxidant actives in a hair colourant, ammonium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide at pH 10, with added copper and calcium ions. The second set of experiments was performed in the presence of hair containing different levels of copper in conditions very close to those found during hair colouring. Both sets of experiments demonstrate the ability of copper ions to trigger the formation of hydroxyl radicals and catalyse the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide. The ability of chelants ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) and N,N'-ethylenediamine disuccinic acid (EDDS) to moderate the flux of hydroxyl radicals formed in solution systems was demonstrated in the presence of copper ions alone. However, only EDDS was successful in the presence of both calcium and copper ions. This was confirmed in the hair experiments where again only EDDS was successful at preventing hydroxyl radical formation where hair is added as the source of copper and calcium ions. These results are explained using metal speciation modelling and demonstrate the importance of the chelant to be able to specifically bind and prevent the one-electron redox chemistry of copper in the presence of high levels of calcium ions as found in hair. The formation of hydroxyl radicals during the colouring process was shown to lead to hair structure damage as measured by protein loss. EDDS was demonstrated to significantly reduce cuticle damage by suppressing the formation of the hydroxyl radicals in systems with realistic concentrations of calcium and copper.

The results of three experimental studies, i.e. GC-MS of peroxide-crosslinked alkene/alkane mixtures, 13 C NMR of peroxide-cured, 13 C-labeled 2 -ethylidene- 5 norbornene - ethylene-propylene-diene-monomer (EPDM) and EPR of peroxide curing of EPDM, are combined, yielding a more accurate description of the mechanism of peroxide cure of EPDM. Both alkyl and allyl macro-radicals are formed via H-abstraction from the EPM main chain and the residual diene unsaturation, respectively. Combination of these macro-radicals yields alkyl/alkyl, alkyl/allyl and allyl/allyl cross-links and addition of these macro-radicals to the residual diene unsaturation yields alkyl/alkene and allyl/alkene cross-links.

Chiral polyaniline nanofibers were synthesized by using two different oxidants potassium tetrachloroaurate (PTC) and ammonium persulfate (APS) in sequence to oxidize aniline in the presence of a chiral inducing agent (1S)-(+)-10-camphorsulfonic acid (( S )-(+)-CSA) or ( R )-(−)-CSA. The optical activity of the chiral polyaniline varies as a function of the mass ratio of PTC to APS, with the highest optical activity being observed in the ratio range from 1.0 to 2.5. The resulting chiral polyaniline nanofibers were then included into agarose hydrogels via ‘wet process’ and the chiroptical properties of the polyaniline nanofibers are retained within the composite hydrogels, although the degree of chiral organization of the polyaniline appears to be somewhat modified by the presence of the agarose matrix.

Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy and spin trapping were used to explore the mechanism of alcohol oxidation over gold catalysts. Reaction of secondary alcohols with supported and unsupported gold catalysts (e.g., Au/CeO(2), polymer-incarcerated Au nanoparticles, PPh(3)-protected Au nanoparticles) in the presence of spin traps led to the formation of a hydrogen spin adduct. Using isotope labeling, we confirmed that the hydrogen in the spin adduct originates from the cleavage of the C-H bond in the alcohol molecule. The formation of the hydrogen spin adduct most likely results from the abstraction of hydrogen from the Au surface by a spin trap. These results thus strongly suggest intermediate formation of Au-H species during alcohol oxidation. The role of oxygen in this mechanism is to restore the catalytic activity rather than oxidize alcohol. This was further confirmed by carrying out gold-catalyzed alcohol oxidation in the absence of oxygen, with nitroxides as hydrogen abstractors. The support (e.g., metal oxides) can activate oxygen and act as an H abstractor from the gold surface and hence lead to a faster recovery of the activity. Peroxyl radicals were also observed during alcohol oxidation, consistent with a free-radical autoxidation mechanism. However, this mechanism is likely to be a minor side reaction, which does not lead to the formation of an appreciable amount of oxidation products.

Electron spin-echo envelope modulation (ESEEM) spectroscopy was used to investigate intramolecular and intermolecular complexes of cyclodextrins (CDs) with a nitroxide group. The interaction with solvent molecules (D(2)O) was followed through the (2)H modulation depth. Competition experiments with adamantane-type guests were used to confirm complexation. The shielding of the nitroxide group from solvent upon inclusion into a CD cavity made this technique more sensitive to complexation than cw EPR spectroscopy. ESEEM analysis of a series of CDs mono and bis spin-labeled on the primary rim of the cavity showed that only one compound formed a self-inclusion complex. This suggests that significant linker length/flexibility is required for formation of inclusion complexes in functionalized CDs. DEER (double electron-electron resonance) experiments confirmed that the self-inclusion complex of the spin-labeled CD was intra- rather than intermolecular.

Cross-linking of ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubbers containing different amounts of dicyclopentadiene (DCPD), 5-ethylidene-2-norbornene (ENB) and 5-vinyl-2-norbornene (VNB) dienes was examined by EPR spectroscopy. The cross-linking was initiated by thermal decomposition of dicumyl peroxide at 440 K. The concentration of free radicals increased towards the end of the cross-linking process before reaching a maximum and decaying to zero. This is explained by the spatial confinement of the radicals in the cross-linked rubber, which leads to increased life time and, hence, higher radical concentration at a time when most peroxide has decomposed. The EPR spectra showed the presence of two components: a well-resolved spectrum overlapping a broad line. Both components are assigned to allyl radicals possessing different mobility. The more mobile component is assigned to allyl radicals along the EPDM chains, whereas the immobilised allyl radicals are formed in the cross-links. The stability of the allyl radicals decreases in the order DCPD > ENB > VNB. EPDMs containing two dienes show more persistent radicals than their single-diene counterparts. The most persistent radicals are observed for highly cross-linked (e.g., 28% ENB) or mixed diene EPDMs (e.g., 2.2% DCPD–4.4% ENB); the EPR spectra of free radicals in these systems can be observed for several hours.

New nanocomposites containing functionalized acrylate monomers and Au nanoparticles (NPs, 1.5−3 nm core diameter, 1−2 wt %) have been developed for an all-optical fabrication of periodic bulk structures by holographic photopolymerization. The Au NPs were coated with ethyl 11-mercaptoundecanoate to ensure good solubility in low-polarity organic media. The materials with only 1.5 wt % Au NPs show unusually high amplitude of the refractive index modulation in the diffraction volume gratings (0.0073). Both volume and surface relief gratings are formed during the holographic exposure. The proposed mechanism of the refractive index contrast amplification (as compared to monomer mixture without NPs) includes interception of free radicals by Au nanoparticles. This slows down the free-radical photopolymerization, thus promoting the increase in lateral periodic redistribution of the components in the interference pattern. Optically active polyaniline nanorods and hierarchically structured gold microspheres are synthesized using tetrachloroaurate as an efficient oxidant of aniline in the presence of a chiral inducing agent camphorsulfonic acid. The chiral organization of the resultant polyaniline nanorods is strongly affected by the ratio of aniline to AuCl4−, with the highest optical activity being observed for the ratio around 5:2. The particle size and size distributions of the gold microspheres are influenced by the concentration of the oxidant tetrachloroaurate.

Variable temperature electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra of spin-labeled Au nanoparticles in toluene solution were recorded at X-, Q- and W-bands. The chain length of the nitroxide-based spin-labeled ligand and the surrounding alkanethiol ligands was systematically varied. The spectra were analyzed using the NLSL program (Budil, D. E.; Lee, S.; Saxena, S.; Freed, J. H. J. Magn. Reson., Ser. A 1996, 120, 155) which simulates slow motion spectra using the stochastic Liouville approach. The simulation results show that the rotational diffusion parameters for particles (∼2.6 nm Au core diameter) are dominated by the local motion of the ligand. The length of the spin label has the biggest effect on the nitroxide dynamics followed by the chain length of the surrounding ligands. The results are consistent with the loose packing of ligands on the nanoparticle surface. The packing density of ligands further decreases with the increasing distance from the Au surface. A study of the magnetic and electrochemical properties of a TEMPO-substituted disulfide diradical in three different environments was carried out: in solution, in the crystal, and as a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) on an Au(111) substrate, and the relationship between them was explored. In solution, this flexible diradical shows a strong spin-exchange interaction between the two nitroxide functions that depends on the temperature and solvent. Structural, dynamic, and thermodynamic information has been extracted from the EPR spectra of this dinitroxide. The magnetic interactions in the crystal include intra- and intermolecular contributions, which have been studied separately and shown to be antiferromagnetic in both cases. Finally, we demonstrate that both the magnetic and electrochemical properties are preserved upon chemisorption of the diradical on a gold surface.
