Abstract The impact of climate change on human social development has been a topic of research for a long time. Ceramic pipes, which are vital components of urban drainage engineering, are crucial means of managing rain hazards and floods. Exploring the historical evolution of ceramic pipes can help in better understanding the interplay between climate change and human behavior. This study examined the diameters of 86 ceramic pipes unearthed from six cultural sites in central China, including Pingliangtai, Taosi, and Erlitou, dated to 4600–3040 a BP. By combining speleothem records from the excavation sites with precipitation and temperature composite curves for China using Pearson correlation analysis, and verifying with pollen records. The results show that changes in rainfall were the main factor influencing the diameters of the ceramic pipes. This indicates that during this period, ancient people in the Central Plains of China were able to adjust the size of the ceramic pipes to regulate the water management capacity of urban water systems, thereby adapting urban development to climate change.

Abstract Background and aims Electrophysiological characteristics and radiofrequency catheter ablation (RFCA) of premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) originating from the superior septal left ventricle (SSLV) have not yet been fully characterized. Methods and results This study included 247 patients who underwent RFCA for PVCs arising from the ventricular outflow tract between February 2020 and August 2022. The successful ablation site was on the SSLV in 37 of the 247 patients. In 12 (32.4%) of those 37 patients, a low amplitude and high frequency spiky potential (SP) was recognized. Five patients showed a narrow QRS duration (86.8 ± 4.6 ms), with a discrete SP observed in PVCs and sinus rhythm, which showed an isoelectric line with the ventricular electrogram at the earliest activation site. Seven patients showed a wide QRS duration (131.6 ± 4.5 ms), with SP observed in PVCs without an isoelectric line with the ventricular electrogram. RFCA was successful at the site of the earliest SP in all 12 patients. The time from SP onset at the successful ablation site to the QRS onset (local activation time) was 30 ± 12 ms, which differed significantly from that for the remaining 25 patients withoutSP(22.1 ± 7.1 ms, P

Introduction: In this study, we aim to describe the radiological characteristics of degenerative cervical kyphosis (DCK) with cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) and discuss the relationship between DCK and the pathogenesis of spinal cord dysfunction. Methods: In total, 90 patients with CSM hospitalized in our center from September 2017 to August 2022 were retrospectively examined in this study; they were then divided into the kyphosis group and the nonkyphosis group. The patients' demographics, clinical features, and radiological data were obtained, including gender, age, duration of illness, cervical Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) score, cervical lordosis (CL), height of intervertebral space, degree of wedging vertebral body, degree of osteophyte formation, degree of disc herniation, degree of spinal cord compression, and anteroposterior diameter of the spinal cord. In the kyphosis group, kyphotic segments, apex of kyphosis, and segmental kyphosis angle were recorded. Radiological characteristics between the two groups were also compared. Correlation analysis was performed for different spinal cord compression types. Results: As per our findings, the patients in the kyphosis group showed more remarkable wedging of the vertebral body, more severe anterior compression of the spinal cord, and a higher degree of disc herniation, while the posterior compression of the spinal cord was relatively mild when compared with the nonkyphosis group. CL was related to the type of spinal cord compression, as cervical kyphosis is an independent risk factor for anterior spinal cord compression. Conclusions: DCK might play a vital role in the pathogenesis of spinal cord dysfunction. In patients with DCK, it was determined that the anterior column is less supported, and more severe anterior spinal cord compression is present. The anterior approach is supposed to be preferred for CSM patients with DCK.

Abstract Background Previous evidence showed a possible link of dyslipidemia with bone health. Nevertheless, the correlation of remnant cholesterol (RC) with bone mineral density (BMD) has yet to be well investigated. This study investigated the association of RC with total spine BMD in general Americans. Methods This study explored the relationship of RC with total spine BMD in subjects aged ≥ 20 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2013–2018. After adjusting for covariates, multivariate linear regression and stratified analyses were conducted to determine the correlation of serum RC with total spine BMD in adult Americans. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) was applied to examine the nonlinear association of serum RC with total spine BMD. Results This study included 3815 individuals ≥ 20 years old, 1905 (49.93%) of whom were men and 1910 (50.07%) of whom were women. After adjusting for all covariates, the results showed a negative relationship of serum RC with total spine BMD (β= -0.024, 95% CI: -0.039, -0.010). The interaction tests of age, sex, race, and BMI showed no statistically significant effects on the association. In recent years, thermosensitive polysaccharide-based injectable hydrogels have gained increasing attention in biomedical applications, including wound healing, drug delivery, and cartilage repair. These hydrogels have favorable biocompatibility, biodegradability, and tunable physical and chemical properties. Thermosensitive polysaccharide-based injectable hydrogels are a class of intelligent soft matter material. They can undergo a reversible liquid-solid transition when exposed to temperature stimuli. Therefore, their precursor solutions can be accurately inserted into target sites with irregular geometries in a minimally invasive way and then transformed into gels in situ by the organism's temperature stimulation to deliver biologically active molecules. This review summarizes the recent developments of thermosensitive injectable polysaccharide-based hydrogels. The focus is on the mechanism of sol-gel phase transition, as well as the design and preparation of thermosensitive polysaccharides and their applications in biomedical fields. In addition, the outlook of the challenges in biomedical applications is provided at the end of the paper.

Abstract In implantable electrophysiological recording systems, the headstage typically comprises neural probes that interface with brain tissue and integrated circuit chips for signal processing. While advancements in MEMS and CMOS technology have significantly improved these components, their interconnection still relies on conventional printed circuit boards and sophisticated adapters. This conventional approach adds considerable weight and volume to the package, especially for high channel count systems. To address this issue, we developed a through-polymer via (TPV) method inspired by the through-silicon via (TSV) technique in advanced three-dimensional packaging. This innovation enables the vertical integration of flexible probes, amplifier chips, and PCBs, realizing a flexible, lightweight, and integrated device (FLID). The total weight of the FLIDis only 25% that of its conventional counterparts relying on adapters, which significantly increased the activity levels of animals wearing the FLIDs to nearly match the levels of control animals without implants. Furthermore, by incorporating a platinum-iridium alloy as the top layer material for electrical contact, the FLID realizes exceptional electrical performance, enabling in vivo measurements of both local field potentials and individual neuron action potentials. These findings showcase the potential of FLIDs in scaling up implantable neural recording systems and mark a significant advancement in the field of neurotechnology.

Abstract This study explores the bidirectional association between multimorbidity and falls in Chinese middle-aged and elderly adults. Participants aged 45 and above from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study were included. Binary logistic regression assessed the impact of chronic conditions on fall incidence (stage I), while multinomial logistic regression examined the relationship between baseline falls and multimorbidity (stage II). The fully adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for one, two, or three or more chronic conditions were 1.34, 1.65, and 2.02, respectively. Among participants without baseline falls, 28.61% developed two or more chronic conditions during follow-up, compared to 37.4% of those with a history of falls. Fully adjusted ORs for one, two, or three or more chronic conditions in those with a history of falls were 1.21, 1.38 and 1.70, respectively. The bidirectional relationship held in sensitivity and subgroup analyses. A bidirectional relationship exists between multimorbidity and falls in Chinese middle-aged and elderly adults. Strengthening chronic condition screening and treatment in primary healthcare may reduce falls risk, and prioritizing fall prevention and intervention in daily life is recommended.

Abstract To overcome the problems of commercial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents (CAs) (i.e., small molecule Gd chelates), we have proposed a new concept of Gd macrochelates based on the coordination of Gd3+ and macromolecules, e.g., poly(acrylic acid) (PAA). To further decrease the r 2/r 1 ratio of the reported Gd macrochelates that is an important factor for T 1 imaging, in this study, a superior macromolecule hydrolyzed polymaleic anhydride (HPMA) was found to coordinate Gd3+. The synthesis conditions were optimized and the generated Gd-HPMA macrochelate was systematically characterized. The obtained Gd-HPMA29 synthesized in a 100 L of reactor has a r 1 value of 16.35 mM−1 s−1 and r 2/r 1 ratio of 2.05 at 7.0 T, a high Gd yield of 92.7% and a high product weight (1074 g), which demonstrates the feasibility of kilogram scale facile synthesis. After optimization of excipients and sterilization at a high temperature, the obtained Gd-HPMA30 formulation has a pH value of 7.97, osmolality of 691 mOsmol/kg water, density of 1.145 g/mL, and viscosity of 2.2 cP at 20 ℃ or 1.8 cP at 37 ℃, which meet all specifications and physicochemical criteria for clinical injections indicating the immense potential for clinical applications. Near-infrared (NIR) phosphor-converted light-emitting diodes/laser diodes (LEDs/LDs) are prospective lighting sources for NIR spectroscopy. However, developing NIR phosphor materials with desired thermal robustness and high photoelectric efficiency is a crucial challenge for their applications. In this work, based on the cationic radius matching effect, a series of (Lu,Y)3(Al,Sc,Cr)2Al3O12 NIR phosphor ceramics (LuYScCr NIR-PCs) were fabricated by vacuum sintering. Excellent thermal stability (95%@150 ℃) was obtained in the prepared NIR-PCs, owing to their weak electron–phonon coupling effect (small Huang–Rhys factor). Being excited at 460 nm, NIR-PCs realized a broadband emission (650–850 nm) with internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 60.68%. Combining NIR-PCs with LED/LD chips, the maximum output power of the encapsulated LED prototype was 447 mW@300 mA with photoelectric efficiency of as high as 18.6 %@180 mA, and the maximum output power of the LD prototype was 814 mW@2.5 A. The working temperatures of NIR-PCs were 70.8 ℃@300 mA (LED) and 102.8 ℃@3 A (LD). Finally, the prepared NIR-PCs applied in food detection were verified in this study, demonstrating their anticipated application prospects in the future.

Abstract Recent studies have indicated that the injection of carbon dioxide (CO2) can lead to increased oil recovery in fractured shale reservoirs following natural depletion. Despite advancements in understanding mass exchange processes in subsurface formations, there remains a knowledge gap concerning the disparities in these processes between the matrix and fractures at the pore scale in formations with varying permeability. This study aims to experimentally investigate the CO2 diffusion behaviors and in situ oil recovery through a CO2 huff ‘n’ puff process in the Jimsar shale oil reservoir. To achieve this, we designed three matrix-fracture models with different permeabilities (0.074 mD, 0.170 mD, and 0.466 mD) and experimented at 30 MPa and 91 °C. The oil concentration in both the matrix and fracture was monitored using a low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (LF-NMR) technique to quantify in situ oil recovery and elucidate mass-exchange behaviors. The results showed that after three cycles of CO2 huff ‘n’ puff, the total recovery degree increased from 30.28% to 34.95% as the matrix permeability of the core samples increased from 0.074 to 0.466 mD, indicating a positive correlation between CO2 extraction efficiency and matrix permeability. Under similar fracture conditions, the increase in matrix permeability further promoted CO2 extraction efficiency during CO2 huff ‘n’ puff. Specifically, the increase in matrix permeability of the core had the greatest effect on the extraction of the first-cycle injection in large pores, which increased from 16.42% to 36.64%. The findings from our research provide valuable insights into the CO2 huff ‘n’ puff effects in different pore sizes following fracturing under varying permeability conditions, shedding light on the mechanisms of CO2-enhanced oil recovery in fractured shale oil reservoirs.

Abstract To address the problem of pillar instability in residual mining areas under repeated mining disturbances, the prediction of pillar instability time and mining technology is studied by using numerical simulations, theoretical examinations, and practical experimentation techniques utilizing the remaining facade of the Shenghua Coal Industry 3103. On the basis of the findings, employing a fully mechanized mining technique exerts greater pressure on the coal pillar, increasing the likelihood of plastic failure. However, adopting the segmental filling mining approach can effectively disperse this pressure, consequently mitigating potential damage to the coal pillar. Initially, the coal pillar undergoes a progressive yielding or collapsing process at its periphery, leading to instability once the area of the projectile core of the coal pillar decreases beyond a specific threshold. The dimensions of both the affected roadway and the coal pillar play a pivotal role in determining the coal pillar's load‐bearing capacity. A prediction model for pillar instability is established. If the area of the projectile core is less than 34% during remining, the mining method should be changed or pillar reinforcement should be implemented. The accurate prediction and adaptation of the model's mining approach ensure the secure extraction of coal pillars within the remaining mining region, with successful validation of the model's performance.

Abstract Translational control is crucial for protein production in various biological contexts. Here, we use Ribo-seq and RNA-seq to show that genes related to oxidative phosphorylation are translationally downregulated during heart regeneration. We find that Nat10 regulates the expression of Uqcr11 and Uqcrb mRNAs in mouse and human cardiomyocytes. In mice, overexpression of Nat10 in cardiomyocytes promotes cardiac regeneration and improves cardiac function after injury. Conversely, treating neonatal mice with Remodelin—a Nat10 pharmacological inhibitor—or genetically removing Nat10 from their cardiomyocytes both inhibit heart regeneration. Mechanistically, Nat10 suppresses the expression of Uqcr11 and Uqcrb independently of its ac4C enzyme activity. This suppression weakens mitochondrial respiration and enhances the glycolytic capacity of the cardiomyocytes, leading to metabolic reprogramming. We also observe that the expression of Nat10 is downregulated in the cardiomyocytes of P7 male pig hearts compared to P1 controls. The levels of Nat10 are also lower in female human failing hearts than non-failing hearts. We further identify the specific binding regions of Nat10, and validate the pro-proliferative effects of Nat10 in cardiomyocytes derived from human embryonic stem cells. Our findings indicate that Nat10 is an epigenetic regulator during heart regeneration and could potentially become a clinical target.

Post-weld heat treatment and rolling deformation are used to improve the mechanical properties of 2195-O Al–Li alloy friction stir welding (FSW) joints, and the effects on the grain structure, precipitation behaviors, hardness distribution, and tensile performance are discussed. Microstructural characterization was conducted using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Mechanical properties were measured by hardness test and tensile test. Results show that coarse precipitates are subjected to various degrees of dissolution after FSW. Solution treatment following artificial aging (SAA) and 40% rolling deformation + SAA treatment (R40-SAA) enables the dissolution of coarse precipitates completely and precipitation of strengthening phases (T1 and θ′) in the nugget zone (NZ), thermo-mechanically affected zone and heat-affected zone (HAZ). These strengthening precipitates have little difference in precipitation behavior after SAA and R40-SAA treatment and remain consistent across all regions, resulting in joint hardness change a little between these two joints with a homogeneous distribution. The change in precipitates leads to an increase in hardness and enhances both the SAA joint strength and the R40-SAA joint strength to 503 MPa and 528 MPa (superior to the original joints by 309 MPa and 334 MPa, respectively), respectively. The SAA joints fracture in the NZ resulting from the development of AGG, and develop an intergranular fracture morphology with an elongation of 4.2%. The R40-SAA joints have an elongation of 7.2% due to the generation of uniformly fine grains in the NZ, and fail in the HAZ exhibiting a brittle fracture mechanism.

Abstract Background The forgotten ureteral stents (FUS) is one of the late complications of stent placement. This systematic review summarized different aspects of FUS and focused on the problems and solutions related to FUS. Methods This systematic review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) statement. PubMed® and Embase® were searched from inception until October 1st, 2022. Eligible studies were those defining FUS as a stent unintentionally left in situ longer than at least 2 months. Results Total 147 studies with 1292 patients were finally included. The mean indwelling time of FUS was 33.5 months (range from 3 months to 32 years). The most common initial cause for stent placement was adjunct treatment to urolithiasis (79.2%). The major forgetting reasons were patient-related (83.9%), which included poor compliance, lapse in memory, and misconceptions about the necessity of timely removal. Primary presenting complaints were flank pain (37.3%), lower urinary tract symptoms (33.3%), and hematuria (22.8%). Encrustation (80.8%) and urinary tract infections (40.2%) were the most common complications detected in patients with FUS. Computed tomography evolving as a preferred imaging test (76.1%) was indispensable for evaluating encrustation, migration, fracture and other complicated situations in patients with FUS. Besides, evaluation of kidney function and infection status was also of great importance. Multiple and multimodal procedures (59.0%) were often necessitated to achieve the stent-free status, and were mostly endoscopic procedures. Cystoscope was most commonly used (64.8%). Retrograde ureteroscopy (43.4%) and antegrade stent removal (31.6%) were often used when dealing with more complicated situations. Extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy (30.4%) was often used as adjunctive to other endoscopic procedures, but it sometimes failed. The decision regarding the choice of treatment is based on the volume and site of encrustation, the direction of migration, the site of fracture, kidney function and other urinary comorbidities. Conclusions FUS not only pose hazard to patients’ health, but also impose a huge economic burden on medical care. Thorough preoperative evaluation is fundamental to developing the treatment strategy. The management of FUS should be individualized using different treatment modalities with their advantages to minimize patients’ morbidities. Prevention is better than cure. Strengthening health education and setting a tracking program are of great importance to the prevention of FUS.

Abstract Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator-1 (PGC-1) family (PGC-1s), consisting of three members encompassing PGC-1α, PGC-1β, and PGC-1-related coactivator (PRC), was discovered more than a quarter-century ago. PGC-1s are essential coordinators of many vital cellular events, including mitochondrial functions, oxidative stress, endoplasmic reticulum homeostasis, and inflammation. Accumulating evidence has shown that PGC-1s are implicated in many diseases, such as cancers, cardiac diseases and cardiovascular diseases, neurological disorders, kidney diseases, motor system diseases, and metabolic disorders. Examining the upstream modulators and co-activated partners of PGC-1s and identifying critical biological events modulated by downstream effectors of PGC-1s contribute to the presentation of the elaborate network of PGC-1s. Furthermore, discussing the correlation between PGC-1s and diseases as well as summarizing the therapy targeting PGC-1s helps make individualized and precise intervention methods. In this review, we summarize basic knowledge regarding the PGC-1s family as well as the molecular regulatory network, discuss the physio-pathological roles of PGC-1s in human diseases, review the application of PGC-1s, including the diagnostic and prognostic value of PGC-1s and several therapies in pre-clinical studies, and suggest several directions for future investigations. This review presents the immense potential of targeting PGC-1s in the treatment of diseases and hopefully facilitates the promotion of PGC-1s as new therapeutic targets.

Abstract Background Prostatic fibrosis, characterized by the accumulation of myofibroblasts and collagen deposition, is closely associated with LUTS and may lead to mechanical obstruction of the urethra. Additionally, Metabolic Syndrome (MetS), characterized by central obesity, high blood sugar, lipid metabolism disorders, and hypertension, is increasingly recognized as a proinflammatory condition linked to prostate inflammation. Methods Clinical data from 108 subjects who underwent transurethral resection of the prostate or bipolar plasmakinetic enucleation of the prostate were prospectively collected between June 2021 and August 2022. Patients were divided in two groups according to whether or not they had a diagnosis of MetS. Specimens were stained with Masson trichrome and the periurethral prostatic fibrosis extent was evaluated using quantitative morphometry. Abstract The combustion performance of a scramjet engine is based on a two-phase mixing process of its fuel. To elucidate the mechanism of jet atomization in supersonic airflows, a numerical simulation of liquid jet atomization in a supersonic crossflow is carried out. The Euler method is used to calculate the gas phase, while the Lagrangian particle tracking method is used to calculate the liquid phase. The Reitz wave model is used to simulate the first breakup of the liquid jet, and the Kelvin-Helmholtz/Rayleigh-Taylor hybrid breakup model is used to simulate the second breakup of the droplets. The influence of the liquid/gas momentum flux ratio and the diameter of the jet on the atomization characteristics is discussed. The results show that the penetration depth increases with increasing nozzle diameter and liquid/gas momentum flux ratio. A jet with a larger liquid/gas momentum flux ratio breaks faster, and its Sauter mean diameter is smaller. The Sauter mean diameter of a droplet decreases with decreasing nozzle diameter. At 30 mm downstream of the nozzle, all jets are basically atomized, and the SMD of the jet is around 10 μm. The nozzle diameter has a greater influence on the jet penetration depth than does the liquid/gas momentum flux ratio.

Abstract Intratumor heterogeneity (ITH) of bladder cancer (BLCA) contributes to therapy resistance and immune evasion affecting clinical prognosis. The molecular and cellular mechanisms contributing to BLCA ITH generation remain elusive. It is found that a TM4SF1‐positive cancer subpopulation (TPCS) can generate ITH in BLCA, evidenced by integrative single cell atlas analysis. Extensive profiling of the epigenome and transcriptome of all stages of BLCA revealed their evolutionary trajectories. Distinct ancestor cells gave rise to low‐grade noninvasive and high‐grade invasive BLCA. Epigenome reprograming led to transcriptional heterogeneity in BLCA. During early oncogenesis, epithelial‐to‐mesenchymal transition generated TPCS. TPCS has stem‐cell‐like properties and exhibited transcriptional plasticity, priming the development of transcriptionally heterogeneous descendent cell lineages. Moreover, TPCS prevalence in tumor is associated with advanced stage cancer and poor prognosis. The results of this study suggested that bladder cancer interacts with its environment by acquiring a stem cell‐like epigenomic landscape, which might generate ITH without additional genetic diversification.

ObjectiveSleep disorders is a worldwide public health problem. We sought to examine the association between sarcopenia, a decline in skeletal muscle mass and function, and sleep disorders within the adult demographic of the United States during the period spanning 2011 to 2018.MethodsDiagnosis of sarcopenia and sleep disorders was ascertained through appropriate calculations and a structured questionnaire. The primary correlation analysis was conducted using a weighted multivariate logistic regression model. Furthermore, to confirm the presence of a potential non-linear association between sarcopenia and sleep disorders, additional analyses were performed using multivariate logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regression with dose-response curve analysis. Subgroup analyses were also conducted to explore the influence of relevant socio-demographic factors and other covariates.ResultsThe final analysis encompassed 5,616 participants. Model 4, inclusive of all pertinent covariates, revealed a positive correlation between sarcopenia and sleep disorders, yielding an odds ratio (OR) of 1.732 (95% CI: 1.182–2.547; P = 0.002). Further analysis, utilizing the restricted cubic spline model, indicated a decreasing trend in sleep disorders as sarcopenia indices rose. Stratified analyses across diverse variables underscored the significant impact of sarcopenia on sleep disorders prevalence in several subgroups. Specifically, males, individuals aged 40 and above, non-Hispanic whites, those with high school education or equivalent, unmarried individuals, obese individuals (BMI ≥ 30), alcohol drinkers, former smokers, diabetics, and those engaging in less rigorous recreational activities exhibited a more pronounced association between sarcopenia and sleep disorders. The incidence of sleep disorders exhibited an upward trend as the incidence of sarcopenia declined among study participants.ConclusionsIn summary, our study provides evidence of an association between sarcopenia and the prevalence of sleep disorders, with a negative correlation observed between the sarcopenia index and the odds ratio of sleep disorders. These findings suggest that maintaining optimal muscle mass may have a beneficial impact on sleep-related issues. In terms of exploring the mechanisms underlying the relationship between sarcopenia and sleep disorders, more in-depth research is warranted to ascertain the definitive causal relationship.

Dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the main diseases that causes blindness in humans, and the number of cases is increasing yearly. However, effective treatments are unavailable, and arbutin (ARB) has been reported to have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging effects in other age-related diseases. However, whether ARB can be used to treat dry AMD remains unknown. To explore the therapeutic potential and molecular mechanism of arbutin in the treatment of dry AMD. MTT assays, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production assays, flow cytometry assays, qPCR and western blotting were used to assess the impact of ARB on human RPECs induced by H2O2. A transcriptome sequencing assay was used to further explore how ARB acts on human RPECs treated with H2O2. Hematoxylin and eosin (H&E) staining and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) assays were used to observe the impact of ARB on mouse retina induced by sodium iodate. ARB counteracted the H2O2-induced reduction in human RPECs viability, ARB reversed H2O2-induced cellular ROS production by increasing the expression of antioxidant-related genes and proteins, ARB also reversed H2O2-induced cell apoptosis by altering the expression of apoptosis-related genes and proteins. Transcriptome sequencing and western blotting showed that ARB reduced ERK1/2 and P-38 phosphorylation to prevent H2O2-induced oxidation damage. The in vivo experiments demonstrated that ARB protected against retinal morphology injury in mice, increased serum T-AOC levels and increased antioxidant oxidase gene expression levels in the mouse retina induced by sodium iodate. We concluded that ARB reversed the H2O2-induced decrease in human RPECs viability through the inhibition of ROS production and apoptosis. The ERK1/2 and P38 MAPK signaling pathways may mediate this process. ARB maintained retinal morphology, increased serum T-AOC level and improved the expression of antioxidant oxidase genes in mice.

Deltacoronavirus, widely distributed among pigs and wild birds, pose a significant risk of cross-species transmission, including potential human epidemics. Metagenomic analysis of bird samples from Qinghai Lake, China in 2021 reported the presence of Deltacoronavirus. A specific gene fragment of Deltacoronavirus was detected in fecal samples from wild birds at a positive rate of 5.94% (6/101). Next-generation sequencing (NGS) identified a novel Deltacoronavirus strain, which was closely related to isolates from the United Arab Emirates (2018), China (2022), and Poland (2023). Subsequently the strain was named A/black-headed gull/Qinghai/2021(BHG-QH-2021) upon confirmation of the Cytochrome b gene of black-headed gull in the sample. All available genome sequences of avian Deltacoronavirus, including the newly identified BHG-QH-2021 and 5 representative strains of porcine Deltacoronavirus (PDCoV), were classified according to ICTV criteria. In contrast to Coronavirus HKU15, which infects both mammals and birds and shows the possibility of cross-species transmission from bird to mammal host, our analysis revealed that BHG-QH-2021 is classified as Putative species 4. Putative species 4 has been reported to infect 5 species of birds but not mammals, suggesting that cross-species transmission of Putative species 4 is more prevalent among birds. Recombination analysis traced BHG-QH-2021 origin to dut148cor1 and MW01_1o strains, with MW01_1o contributing the S gene. Surprisingly, SwissModle prediction showed that the optimal template for receptor-binding domain (RBD) of BHG-QH-2021 is derived from the human coronavirus 229E, a member of the Alphacoronavirus, rather than the anticipated RBD structure of PDCoV of Deltacoronavirus. Further molecular docking analysis revealed that substituting the loop 1–2 segments of HCoV-229E significantly enhanced the binding capability of BHG-QH-2021 with human Aminopeptidase N (hAPN), surpassing its native receptor-binding domain (RBD). Most importantly, this finding was further confirmed by co-immunoprecipitation experiment that loop 1–2 segments of HCoV-229E enable BHG-QH-2021 RBD binding to hAPN, indicating that the loop 1–2 segment of the RBD in Putative species 4 is a probable key determinant for the virus ability to spill over into humans. Our results summarize the phylogenetic relationships among known Deltacoronavirus, reveal an independent putative avian Deltacoronavirus species with inter-continental and inter-species transmission potential, and underscore the importance of continuous surveillance of wildlife Deltacoronavirus.

The potentially lethal zoonotic disease alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is caused by the metacestode larval stages of the tapeworm Echinococcus multilocularis. Metacestode growth and proliferation occurs within the inner organs of mammalian hosts, which is associated with complex molecular parasite–host interactions. The host has developed various ways to resist a parasitic infection, and the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is one of the most important strategies. Here, we found that scavenging of ROS reduced metacestode larval growth and germinative cell proliferation in in vivo models. Furthermore, using in vitro-cultured metacestode vesicles, we found that increased ROS levels enhanced metacestode growth and germinative cell proliferation, which was achieved by positively activating the ROS-EmERK-EmHIF1α axis. These results indicate that, beside its capacity to damage the parasite, ROS also play critical roles in metacestode growth and germinative cell proliferation. This study suggests that the effects of ROS on parasite may be bidirectional during AE infection, reflecting the parasite’s adaptation to the oxidative stress microenvironment.

BackgroundThe HIV-1 molecular network is an innovative tool, using gene sequences to understand transmission attributes and complementing social and sexual network studies. While previous research focused on static network characteristics, recent studies’ emphasis on dynamic features enhances our understanding of real-time changes, offering insights for targeted interventions and efficient allocation of public health resources. ObjectiveThis study aims to identify the dynamic changes occurring in HIV-1 molecular transmission networks and analyze the primary influencing factors driving the dynamics of HIV-1 molecular networks. MethodsWe analyzed and compared the dynamic changes in the molecular network over a specific time period between the baseline and observed end point. The primary factors influencing the dynamic changes in the HIV-1 molecular network were identified through univariate analysis and multivariate analysis. ResultsA total of 955 HIV-1 polymerase fragments were successfully amplified from 1013 specimens; CRF01_AE and CRF07_BC were the predominant subtypes, accounting for 40.8% (n=390) and 33.6% (n=321) of the specimens, respectively. Through the analysis and comparison of the basic and terminal molecular networks, it was discovered that 144 sequences constituted static molecular networks, and 487 sequences contributed to the formation of dynamic molecular networks. The findings of the multivariate analysis indicated that the factors occupation as a student, floating population, Han ethnicity, engagement in occasional or multiple sexual partnerships, participation in anal sex, and being single were independent risk factors for the dynamic changes observed in the HIV-1 molecular network, and the odds ratio (OR; 95% CIs) values were 2.63 (1.54-4.47), 1.83 (1.17-2.84), 2.91 (1.09-7.79), 1.75 (1.06-2.90), 4.12 (2.48-6.87), 5.58 (2.43-12.80), and 2.10 (1.25-3.54), respectively. Heterosexuality and homosexuality seem to exhibit protective effects when compared to bisexuality, with OR values of 0.12 (95% CI 0.05-0.32) and 0.26 (95% CI 0.11-0.64), respectively. Additionally, the National Eight-Item score and sex education experience were also identified as protective factors against dynamic changes in the HIV-1 molecular network, with OR values of 0.12 (95% CI 0.05-0.32) and 0.26 (95% CI 0.11-0.64), respectively. ConclusionsThe HIV-1 molecular network analysis showed 144 sequences in static networks and 487 in dynamic networks. Multivariate analysis revealed that occupation as a student, floating population, Han ethnicity, and risky sexual behavior were independent risk factors for dynamic changes, while heterosexuality and homosexuality were protective compared to bisexuality. A higher National Eight-Item score and sex education experience were also protective factors. The identification of HIV dynamic molecular networks has provided valuable insights into the characteristics of individuals undergoing dynamic alterations. These findings contribute to a better understanding of HIV-1 transmission dynamics and could inform targeted prevention strategies.

This study introduces newly discovered chrysin derivatives that show potential as candidate molecules for treating inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Compound 4b, among the synthesized compounds, displayed significant inhibitory effects on monocyte adhesion to colon epithelium induced by TNF-α, with an IC50 value of 4.71 μM. Further mechanistic studies demonstrated that 4b inhibits the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and downregulates the expression of ICAM-1 and MCP-1, key molecules involved in monocyte-epithelial adhesion, as well as the transcriptional activity of NF-κB. In vivo experiments have shown that compound 4b exhibits a dose-dependent inhibition of 2, 4, 6-trinitrobenzenesulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis in rats, thereby validating its effectiveness as a colitis inhibitor in animal models. These results indicate that 4b shows considerable promise as a therapeutic agent for managing IBD.

Abstract According to the latest evidence, the microbial metabolite Urolithin A (UA), known for its role in promoting cellular health, modulates CD8+ T cell‐mediated antitumor activity. However, the direct target protein of UA and its underlying mechanism remains unclear. Here, this research identifies ERK1/2 as the specific target crucial for UA‐mediated CD8+ T cell activation. Even at low doses, UA markedly enhances the persistence and effector functions of primary CD8+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTLs) and human chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells both in vitro and in vivo. Mechanistically, UA interacts directly with ERK1/2 kinases, enhancing their activation and subsequently facilitating T cell activation by engaging ULK1. The UA‐ERK1/2‐ULK1 axis promotes autophagic flux in CD8+ CTLs, enhancing cellular metabolism and maintaining reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, as evidenced by increased oxygen consumption and extracellular acidification rates. UA‐treated CD8+ CTLs also display elevated ATP levels and enhanced spare respiratory capacity. Overall, UA activates ERK1/2, inducing autophagy and metabolic adaptation, showcasing its potential in tumor immunotherapy and interventions for diseases involving ERKs.

Objectives There was no evidence regarding the relationship between septic shock and tracheal injury scores. Investigate whether septic shock was independently associated with tracheal injury scores in intensive care unit (ICU) patients with invasive ventilation.Design Prospective observational cohort study.Setting Our study was conducted in a Class III hospital in Hebei province, China.Participants Patients over 18 years of age admitted to the ICU between 31 May 2020 and 3 May 2022 with a tracheal tube and expected to be on the tube for more than 24 hours.Primary and secondary outcome measures Tracheal injuries were evaluated by examining hyperaemia, ischaemia, ulcers and tracheal perforation by fiberoptic bronchoscope. Depending on the number of lesions, the lesions were further classified as moderate, severe or confluent.Results Among the 97 selected participants, the average age was 56.6±16.5 years, with approximately 64.9% being men. The results of adjusted linear regression showed that septic shock was associated with tracheal injury scores (β: 2.99; 95% CI 0.70 to 5.29). Subgroup analysis revealed a stronger association with a duration of intubation ≥8 days (p=0.013).Conclusion Patients with septic shock exhibit significantly higher tracheal injury scores compared with those without septic shock, suggesting that septic shock may serve as an independent risk factor for tracheal injury.Trial registration number ChiCTR2000037842, registered 03 September 2020. Objective: Primary squamous cell thyroid carcinoma (PSCTC) is an extremely rare carcinoma, accounting for less than 1% of all thyroid carcinomas. However, the factors contributing to PSCTC outcomes remain unclear. This study aimed to identify the prognostic factors and develop a prognostic predictive model for patients with PSCTC. Methods: The analysis included patients diagnosed with thyroid carcinoma between 1975 and 2016 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Prognostic differences among the 5 pathological types of thyroid carcinomas were analyzed. To determine prognostic factors in PSCTC patients, the Cox regression model and Fine–Gray competing risk model were utilized. Based on the Fine–Gray competing risk model, a nomogram was established for predicting the prognosis of patients with PSCTC. Results: A total of 198,757 thyroid carcinoma patients, including 218 PSCTC patients, were identified. As a noninvasive, nonradiative and high-speed imaging modality, fluorescence imaging in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II, 1,000-1,700 nm) has demonstrated great potential for biomedical research and clinical study. The NIR-II window can be further divided into two spectral regions: NIR-IIa (1,000-1,300 nm) and NIR-IIb (1,500-1,700 nm). Compared to NIR-IIa, imaging in NIR-IIb region affords high-resolution imaging at subcentimeter tissue depths due to suppressed photon scattering and diminished tissue autofluorescence at long wavelengths, but relies on probes with high toxicity. To address the problem, researchers employ deep learning networks to attain NIR-IIb images from NIR-IIa images. However, current methods require numerous paired or unpaired images (more than 2800 images) as training sets, which can hardly acquire. In this work, an innovative convolutional neural network (BRCycle-GAN) is trained based on a small training set (merely 63 images) to transform NIR-IIa images into images with NIR-IIb imaging qualities. The NIR-IIb images generated by BRCycle-GAN outperform previous network models in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio, cosine similarity and other image evaluation indices.

Abstract Background The advantages of anterior cervical decompression and fusion (ACDF) were well published, while research on postoperative results in different subtypes of cervical disk herniation (CDH) still remains blank. Fire radiative power (FRP) is a key indicator for evaluating the intensity of wildfires, unlike traditional real-time fire lines or combustion areas that only provide binary information, and its accurate prediction is more important for firefighting actions and environmental pollution assessment. To this end, we used a combination of data from geostationary satellites and polar orbit satellites to correct the FRP data. Incorporating various factors that affect wildfire spread, such as meteorological conditions, topography, vegetation indexes, and population density, we constructed a comprehensive California wildfire spread dataset, covering information since 2017. Then, we established a deep learning framework that integrates various modules to analyze multimodal data for the accurate prediction of FRP imagery. We investigated the impact of input sequence length and loss function design on model predictive performance, leading to subsequent model optimization. Furthermore, our model has demonstrated acceptable performance in transfer learning and multistep prediction, emphasizing its application value in wildfire prediction and management. It can provide more detailed information about wildfire spread, showcasing the powerful capability of deep learning to process multimodal data and its potential in the emerging field of real-time FRP prediction.

Plant seeds from the Fabaceae (Leguminosae) family are commonly edible. However, little has been done to study the phytochemicals of red clover (Trifolium pratense) seeds. Our study aims to obtain comprehensive and novel findings on red clover seeds and supercritical fluid extraction (SFE)-extracted oil, with the purpose of exploring their potential as a new source of functional ingredients for food and health care products. In our study, red clover seed oil was extracted by supercritical CO2. Forty-four phytochemical compounds were preliminarily identified in red clover seeds and the extracted oil by UPLC-ESI-MS/MS metabolomics method. These compounds mainly belong to lipids, phenolic compounds, terpenoids and phytosterols. Red clover seeds contain fatty acids (4,676.1 mg/100 g dried seeds) and bioactive components such as phenolic compounds (228.4 mg/100 g) and tocopherols (94.9 mg/100 g). In red clover seed oil, unsaturated fatty acids are over 83% and are rich in linoleic acid (54.7 g/100 g oil) and oleic acid (14.0 g/100 g oil). These findings provide important guidance for introducing red clover seed oil into pharmaceutical products or as functional foods.

Abstract Background Despite its prevalence, there is ongoing debate regarding the optimal management strategy for chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH), reflecting the variability in clinical presentation and treatment outcomes. This ambidirectional, nationwide, multicenter registry study aims to assess the efficacy and safety of multimodality treatment approaches for CSDH in the Chinese population. Methods/design A multicenter cohort of CSDH patients from 59 participating hospitals in mainland China was enrolled in this study. The treatment modalities encompassed a range of options and baseline demographics, clinical characteristics, radiographic findings, and surgical techniques were documented. Clinical outcomes, including hematoma resolution, recurrence rates, neurological status, and complications, were assessed at regular intervals during treatment, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years follow-up. Result Between March 2022 and August 2023, a comprehensive cohort comprising 2173 individuals who met the criterion was assembled across 59 participating clinical sites. Of those patients, 81.1% were male, exhibiting an average age of 70.12 ± 14.53 years. A historical record of trauma was documented in 48.0% of cases, while headache constituted the predominant clinical presentation in 58.1% of patients. The foremost surgical modality employed was the burr hole (61.3%), with conservative management accounting for 25.6% of cases. Notably, a favorable clinical prognosis was observed in 88.9% of CSDH patients at 3 months, and the recurrence rate was found to be 2.4%. Conclusion This registry study provides critical insights into the multimodality treatment of CSDH in China, offering a foundation for advancing clinical practices, optimizing patient management, and ultimately, improving the quality of life for individuals suffering from this challenging neurosurgical condition. TaC enhancement particles and Re alloy were used to improve the strength and ductility of the tungsten alloy. The synergetic effect of TaC addition and Re alloying on relative density, microstructure, and mechanical properties of tungsten alloy were investigated. The results indicated that a W-based composite with 2.5 wt% TaC addition and 25 wt% Re alloying exhibited yield stress of 1.23 GPa, the ultimate compressive stress of 2.86 GPa, bending strength of 1.30 GPa and strain capacity of 42 %, which was increased by 114 %, 140 %, 226 %, and 133 % than those of pure W. Further analysis revealed that the grain boundary purification, grain refinement, and kinematic strain gradient contribution because of the addition of TaC, lattice distortion, and the generation of dislocations because of the addition of Re alloying are the main strengthening mechanisms in W–TaC-Re composite.

Abstract Background Studies have shown that integrating anlotinib with programmed death 1 (PD-1)/programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) inhibitors enhances survival rates among progressive non–small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients lacking driver mutations. However, not all individuals experience clinical benefits from this therapy. As a result, it is critical to investigate the factors that contribute to the inconsistent response of patients. Recent investigations have emphasized the importance of lipid metabolic reprogramming in the development and progression of NSCLC. Methods The objective of this investigation was to examine the correlation between lipid variations and observed treatment outcomes in advanced NSCLC patients who were administered PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors alongside anlotinib. A cohort composed of 30 individuals diagnosed with advanced NSCLC without any driver mutations was divided into three distinct groups based on the clinical response to the combination treatment, namely, a group exhibiting partial responses, a group manifesting progressive disease, and a group demonstrating stable disease. The lipid composition of patients in these groups was assessed both before and after treatment. Results Significant differences in lipid composition among the three groups were observed. Further analysis revealed 19 differential lipids, including 2 phosphatidylglycerols and 17 phosphoinositides. Conclusion This preliminary study aimed to explore the specific impact of anlotinib in combination with PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors on lipid metabolism in patients with advanced NSCLC. By investigating the effects of using both anlotinib and PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors, this study enhances our understanding of lipid metabolism in lung cancer treatment. The findings from this research provide valuable insights into potential therapeutic approaches and the identification of new therapeutic biomarkers.

Abstract Background Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the main cause of anovulatory infertility in women of reproductive age, and low-grade chronic inflammation plays a key role in the occurrence and development of PCOS. However, obesity, as a likely confounding factor, can affect the inflammatory state of PCOS patients. Objective The aim of this study was to comprehensively investigate intra-ovarian inflammatory states and their impact on embryo quality in PCOS patients with a normal BMI undergoing IVF treatment. Methods DIA-mass spectrometry-based proteomics and bioinformatic analysis were combined to comprehensively profile the protein expression of granulosa cells (GCs) from 5 normal-BMI PCOS patients and 5 controls. Thirty-four cytokines were further systematically detected in follicular fluid (FF) from 32 age- and BMI-matched normal-BMI patients using Luminex liquid chip suspension technology. Next, the differentially expressed cytokines were evaluated by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 24 newly recruited subjects, and the relationship between these cytokines and embryo quality in PCOS patients was analysed. Finally, these cytokine levels were compared and evaluated in PCOS patients with different androgen levels. Results Proteomic analysis showed that the suppression of substance metabolism and steroid biosynthesis, more interestingly, resulted in an enhanced immune and inflammatory response in the GCs of normal-BMI PCOS patients and prompted the involvement of cytokines in this process. Luminex analysis further showed that FF macrophage inflammatory protein-1 beta (MIP-1β) and stromal cell-derived factor-1 alpha (SDF-1α) levels were significantly increased in normal-BMI PCOS patients compared to controls (P = 0.005; P = 0.035, respectively), and the ELISA results were consistent with these findings. Besides, FF MIP-1β showed an inverse correlation with the number of D3 good-quality embryos and the good-quality blastocyst rate in patients with PCOS (P = 0.006; P = 0.003, respectively), which remained significant after correction for multiple comparisons. Moreover, SDF-1α levels had no relationship with embryo development in PCOS patients. Additionally, SDF-1α levels were significantly lower in PCOS patients with high androgen levels than in controls (P = 0.031). Conclusions Local ovarian inflammation was present in normal-BMI PCOS patients, affecting follicular development, and FF MIP-1β may be a potential biomarker associated with embryo quality in normal-BMI PCOS patients. In recent years, change detection (CD) of optical remote sensing images has made remarkable progress through using deep learning. However, current CD deep learning methods are usually improved from the semantic segmentation models, and focus on enhancing the separability of changed and unchanged features. They ignore the essential characteristics of CD, i.e., different land cover changes exhibit different change magnitudes, resulting in limited accuracy and serious false alarms. To address this limitation, in this article, a category context learning-based difference refinement network (CLDRNet) based on our previous work is proposed. Considering the semantic content differences of heterogeneous land covers, a category context learning module is designed, which introduces a clustering learning procedure to generate an overall representation for each category, guiding the category context modeling. The clustering learning process is differentiable and can be integrated into the end-to-end trainable CD network, so it considers the semantic content differences from the CD perspective, thereby improving the CD performance. In addition, to address the magnitude differences of different land cover changes, a two-stage CD strategy is introduced. The two stages correspond to difference map learning and difference map refinement, aiming at ensuring high detection rates and revising false alarms, respectively. Finally, experimental results on three CD datasets verify the effectiveness of our CLDRNet in both visual and quantitative analysis.

Introduction: Myocardial injury is a serious complication in sepsis with high mortality. Zero-valent iron nanoparticles (nanoFe) displayed novel roles in cecal ligation and puncture (CLP)-induced septic mouse model. Nonetheless, its high reactivity makes it difficult for long-term storage. Objectives: To overcome the obstacle and improve therapeutic efficiency, a surface passivation of nanoFe was designed using sodium sulfide. Methods: We prepared iron sulfide nanoclusters and constructed CLP mouse models. Then the effect of sulfide-modified nanoscale zero-valent iron (S-nanoFe) on the survival rate, blood routine parameters, blood biochemical parameters, cardiac function, and pathological indicators of myocardium was observed. RNA-seq was used to further explore the comprehensive protective mechanisms of S-nanoFe. Finally, the stability of S-nanoFe-1d and S-nanoFe-30 d, together with the therapeutic efficacy of sepsis between S-nanoFe and nanoFe was compared. Results: The results revealed that S-nanoFe significantly inhibited the growth of bacteria and exerted a protective role against septic myocardial injury. S-nanoFe treatment activated AMPK signaling and ameliorated several CLP-induced pathological processes including myocardial inflammation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction. RNA-seq analysis further clarified the comprehensive myocardial protective mechanisms of S-nanoFe against septic injury. Importantly, S-nanoFe had a good stability and a comparable protective efficacy to nanoFe. Conclusions: The surface vulcanization strategy for nanoFe has a significant protective role against sepsis and septic myocardial injury. This study provides an alternative strategy for overcoming sepsis and septic myocardial injury and opens up possibilities for the development of nanoparticle in infectious diseases.

Calcium-sulfate-aluminate and Portland cement (CSA-PC) hybrids with balanced engineering properties would be a preferable solution to mitigate the increasingly raised CO2 emissions by PC. Meanwhile, CSA hydrates are rather active to carbonation, therefore, it is urgent to clarify how accelerated CO2 curing (ACC) impacts the microstructure and engineering properties of CSA-PC hybrids. Herein, an ACC scheme with the CO2 gas pressure of 0.5 MPa and duration of 24 h was designed to treat hybrid CSA-PC pastes and mortars. Mechanical properties and capillary absorption of the ACC-treated CSA-PC hybrids were evaluated with profound analysis of microstructure and mineral characteristics by SEM, MIP, Nitrogen adsorption, XRD and TG/DTG. Results show that the ACC treatment can systematically increase compressive strength by up to 65.2 % and depress capillary absorption rate by up to 72.2 %, respectively, for the optimal CSA-PC mixes. Rapid carbonation of the cement clinkers and hydrates, e.g., calcium hydroxide, ettringite, and ye'elimite, results in precipitation of CaCO3 that refines the pore structure and improves the material compactness. 25 % replacement of PC with CSA shows the highest strength gain to CO2 uptake ratio (SGCUR) of 1.05. The findings deepen the mechanistic understandings in microstructure refinement of ACC-treated CSA-PC hybrids with lower CO2 emissions.

In recent years, the introduction of multiobjective evolutionary algorithms (MOEAs) into the field of endmember extraction (EE) in hyperspectral unmixing has demonstrated a breadth of results that surpass those derived from single-objective-based methodologies. Despite these advancements, the adaptation of MOEAs to EE and the attainment of globally optimal solutions represent unresolved challenges meriting continued exploration. This study addresses two principal obstacles in MOEA-based EE: the notorious “curse of dimensionality” in high-dimensional optimization, and the difficulty in striking a balance between convergence and population diversity. We propose a two-stage, evolutionary-based EE algorithm, referred to as TSEA, designed to confront these issues. A novel solution space splitting strategy is incorporated into TSEA that efficiently mitigates the curse of dimensionality by strategically contracting the search space. This advantage is largely attributed to the significant reduction of invalid solutions achieved through the simple application of a clustering procedure. Furthermore, a two-stage optimization approach is employed to meticulously uphold the convergence and diversity of the population, aiming to attain the optimal solution within the realm of high-dimensional optimization. Empirical evidence from four real hyperspectral images demonstrates that the proposed TSEA outperforms other comparison multiobjective optimization algorithms. Thus, this study contributes to the ongoing discourse on the optimization and applicability of MOEAs in the context of EE.

Abstract Curiosity, or novelty seeking, is a fundamental mechanism motivating animals to explore and exploit environments to improve survival, and is also positively associated with cognitive, intrapersonal and interpersonal well-being in humans. However, curiosity declines as humans age, and the decline even positively predicts the extent of cognitive decline in Alzheimer’s disease patients. Therefore, determining the underlying mechanism, which is currently unknown, is an urgent task for the present aging society that is growing at an unprecedented rate. This study finds that seeking behaviors for both social and inanimate novelties are compromised in aged mice, suggesting that the aging-related decline in curiosity and novelty-seeking is a biological process. This study further identifies an aging-related reduction in the activity (manifesting as a reduction in spontaneous firing) of dopaminergic neurons in the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc). Finally, this study establishes that this reduction in activity causally underlies the aging-related decline in novelty-seeking behaviors. This study potentially provides an interventional strategy for maintaining high curiosity in the aged population, i.e., compensating for the reduced activity of VTA/SNc dopaminergic neurons, enabling the aged population to cope more smoothly with the present growing aging society, physically, cognitively and socioeconomically.

Abstract Carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA19-9), carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125), and alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) are widely used tumor markers for colorectal cancer (CRC), but their clinical significance is unknown when the levels of these tumor markers were within the normal range. This retrospective study included 2145 CRC patients. The entire cohort was randomly divided into training and validation datasets. The optimal cut-off values of tumor markers were calculated using X-tile software, and univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to assess its association with overall survival (OS). The nomogram model was constructed and validated. The entire cohort was randomly divided into a training dataset (1502 cases, 70%) and a validation dataset (643 cases,30%). Calculated from the training dataset, the optimal cut-off value was 2.9 ng/mL for CEA, 10.1 ng/mL for CA19-9, 13.4 U/mL for CA125, and 1.8 ng/mL for AFP, respectively. Multivariate analysis revealed that age, tumor location, T stage, N stage, preoperative CA19-9, and CA125 levels were independent prognostic predictors. Even within the normal range, CRC patients with relatively high levels of CA19-9 or CA125 worse OS compared to those with relatively low levels. Then, based on the independent prognostic predictors from multivariate analysis, two models with/without (model I/II) CA19-9 and CA125 were built, model I showed better prediction and reliability than model II. Within the normal range, relatively high levels of preoperative CA19-9 and CA125 were significantly associated with poor OS in CRC patients. The nomogram based on CA19-9 and CA125 levels showed improved predictive accuracy ability for CRC.

Abstract Nuclear receptor subfamily 1, group D, member 1 (NR1D1, also known as REV-ERBα) belongs to the nuclear receptor (NR) family, and is a heme-binding component of the circadian clock that consolidates circadian oscillators. In addition to repressing the transcription of multiple clock genes associated with circadian rhythms, NR1D1 has a wide range of downstream target genes that are intimately involved in many physiopathological processes, including autophagy, immunity, inflammation, metabolism and aging in multiple organs. This review focuses on the pivotal role of NR1D1 as a key transcription factor in the gene regulatory network, with particular emphasis on the milestones of the latest discoveries of NR1D1 ligands. NR1D1 is considered as a promising drug target for treating diverse diseases and may contribute to research on innovative biomarkers and therapeutic targets for organ injury-related diseases. Further research on NR1D1 ligands in prospective human trials may pave the way for their clinical application in many organ injury-related disorders.

Abstract A simulation study was carried out to investigate the temporal evolution of H2S in the Huangcaoxia underground gas storage (UGS), which is converted from a depleted sulfur-containing gas field. Based on the rock and fluid properties of the Huangcaoxia gas field, a multilayered model was built. The upper layer Jia-2 contains a high concentration of H2S (27.2 g/m3), and the lower layer Jia-1 contains a low concentration of H2S (14.0 mg/m3). There is also a low-permeability interlayer between Jia-1 and Jia-2. The multi-component fluid characterizations for Jia-1 and Jia-2 were implemented separately using the Peng-Robinson equation of state in order to perform the compositional simulation. The H2S concentration gradually increased in a single cycle and peaked at the end of the production season. The peak H2S concentration in each cycle showed a decreasing trend when the recovery factor (RF) of the gas field was lower than 70%. When the RF was above 70%, the peak H2S concentration increased first and then decreased. A higher reservoir RF, a higher maximum working pressure, and a higher working gas ratio will lead to a higher H2S removal efficiency. Similar to developing multi-layered petroleum fields, the operation of multilayered gas storage can also be divided into multi-layer commingled operation and independent operation for different layers. When the two layers are combined to build the storage, the sweet gas produced from Jia-1 can spontaneously mix with the sour gas produced from Jia-2 within the wellbore, which can significantly reduce the overall H2S concentration in the wellstream. When the working gas volume is set constant, the allocation ratio between the two layers has little effect on the H2S removal. After nine cycles, the produced gas’s H2S concentration can be lowered to 20 mg/m3. Our study recommends combining the Jia-2 and Jia-1 layers to build the Huangcaoxia underground gas storage. This plan can quickly reduce the H2S concentration of the produced gas to 20 mg/m3, thus meeting the gas export standards as well as the HSE (Health, Safety, and Environment) requirements in the field. This study helps the engineers understand the H2S removal for sulfur-containing UGS as well as provides technical guidelines for converting other multilayered sour gas fields into underground storage sites.

Abstract Background Cerebral stroke (CS) is the leading cause of death in China, and a complex disease caused by both alterable risk factors and genetic factors. This study intended to investigate the association of MMP3, MMP14, and MMP25 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with CS risk in a Chinese Han population. Methods A total of 1,348 Han Chinese were recruited in this case-control study. Four candidate loci including rs520540 A/G and rs679620 T/C of MMP3, rs2236302 G/C of MMP14, and rs10431961 T/C of MMP25 were successfully screened. The correlation between the four SNPs and CS risk was assessed by logistic regression analysis. The results were analyzed by false-positive report probability (FPRP) for chance or significance. The interactions between four SNPs associated with CS risk were assessed by multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR). Results rs520540 A/G and rs679620 C/T SNP in MMP3 were associated with risk of CS in allele, codominant, dominant and log-additive models. Ischemic stroke risk were significantly lower in carriers with rs520540-A allele and rs679620-T allele than those with G/G or C/C genotypes. However, rs520540-A allele and rs679620-T allele were associated with higher risk of hemorrhagic stroke. Abstract This paper presents comprehensive research of the advantages and applicability of various concrete carbonation detection methods. Employing a combination of Phenolphthalein indicator (PI), Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X-ray phase analysis (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and Quantitative calcium carbonate analysis (CA), a detailed comparison to determine the carbonation depth in the partial carbonation zone of concrete specimens is conducted. Among the quantitative analysis methods, CA measures CaCO3 content based on chemical reactions, while TGA obtains the concentration distribution of Ca(OH)2 and CaCO3. Among qualitative analysis methods, XRD tested the intensity distribution of Ca(OH)2 and CaCO3, while FTIR traced the characteristic peaks of C-O functional groups in a specific spectral range to determine the depth of carbonation of concrete. Results indicate that the depth of carbonation values measured by CA, TGA, XRDA, and FTIR are 2–3 times higher than those measured by PI. This research may provide valuable insights for the design of carbonation detection in concrete.

Arsenic (As) accumulation in plants is a global concern. Although the application of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) has been suggested as a potential solution to decrease As concentration in plants, there is currently a gap in a comprehensive, quantitative assessment of the abiotic and biotic factors influencing As accumulation. A meta-analysis was performed to quantitatively investigate the findings of 76 publications on the impacts of AMF, plant properties, and soil on As accumulation in plants. Results showed a significant dose-dependent As reduction with higher mycorrhizal infection rates, leading to a 19.3% decrease in As concentration. AMF reduced As(V) by 19.4% but increased dimethylarsenic acid (DMA) by 50.8%. AMF significantly decreased grain As concentration by 34.1%. AMF also improved plant P concentration and dry biomass by 33.0% and 62.0%, respectively. The most significant reducing effects of As on AMF properties were seen in single inoculation and experiments with intermediate durations. Additionally, the benefits of AMF were significantly enhanced when soil texture, soil organic carbon (SOC), pH level, Olsen-P, and DTPA-As were sandy soil, 0.8%–1.5%, ≥7.5, ≥9.1 mg/kg, and 30–60 mg/kg, respectively. AMF increased easily extractable glomalin-related soil protein (EE-GRSP) and total glomalin-related soil protein (T-GRSP) by 23.0% and 28.0%, respectively. Overall, the investigated factors had significant implications in developing AMF-based methods for alleviating the negative effects of As stress on plants.

Objective Mobile health (mHealth) technologies are emerging to support the delivery of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR). This study aimed to explore the ease of use, satisfaction and acceptability of an Australian mobile pulmonary rehabilitation app (m-PR™) in people with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods In this mixed methods observational study, participants with COPD were recruited following PR assessment. Participants were educated on m-PR™ which contained symptom monitoring, individualised exercise training with exercise videos, education videos, goal setting, health notifications and medication action plan. Participants used m-PR™ for 4–8 weeks. At baseline, participants were surveyed to assess level of technology engagement. At follow-up, participants completed the system usability survey (SUS), a satisfaction survey and a semi-structured interview. Results Fifteen participants (mean age 70 [SD 10] years, 53% female) completed the study. Technology usage was high with 73% (n = 11) self-rating their technology competence as good or very good. The SUS score of 71 (SD 16) demonstrated above average perceived usability of m-PR™. The satisfaction survey indicated that 67% (n = 10) enjoyed m-PR™ and 33% (n = 5) were neutral. Most participants found the different m-PR™ components somewhat easy or very easy to use (range 69–100%) and somewhat helpful or very helpful (range 76–100%). Interview responses revealed that m-PR™ elicited divergent feelings among participants, who reported both positive and negative feelings towards the app's features, the effort required to use it and data security. Conclusion The majority of participants found m-PR™ enjoyable, easy to use and helpful in managing their COPD. Further research is warranted to understand the effectiveness of mHealth to deliver PR.
