As the body's largest organ, the skin is an integrated multisensory system with self‐healing ability and helps stabilize body temperature. It is herein, inspired by natural skin, a wearable patch made from porous polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) skeleton, poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogel, and silicon oxide (SiO2) particles, offers a combination of self‐healing properties, along with hybrid radiative and evaporative cooling mechanisms, designed for electromyographic (EMG) signal detection and human‐machine interaction. The patch has both high mid‐infrared (MIR) emittance (96%) and visible to near‐infrared (visNIR) reflectance (80%), coupled with efficient water evaporation from the PVA hydrogel, resulting in a hybrid cooling power of 180 W m−2. It obtains a temperature drop of ≈7.7 °C using this patch under a solar intensity of ≈700 W m−2. Furthermore, the patch demonstrates self‐healing ability with ultrafast recovery of electrical conductivity (1 s) and a self‐healing efficiency (≈71%) of fracture strain. Thus, the wearable patch can detect high‐quality EMG signals and provide cooling effects and self‐healing capabilities that enhance comfortability and durability. These features make the patch an advanced solution for developing next‐generation wearable patches that can meet the rigorous demands of durable body temperature control in various applications. In this paper, the effect of sensing-structure taper ratio on two-dimensional (2-D) mechanical wind sensors is demonstrated for the first time. The mechanical wind sensor consists of a sensing structure vertically arranged in the center of a cross cantilever. It detects the wind speed and direction by measuring the airflow-induced cantilever deformation with eight strain gauges attached to the beam surface. Five forms of sensing structures with different taper ratios are designed and manufactured to investigate their effects on the performance of 2-D mechanical wind sensors. A series of experiments are conducted and the results reveal that the taper ratio of the sensing structure can affect the measurement range and the sensitivity of the 2-D mechanical wind sensor. A lower taper ratio results in a higher critical wind speed, which makes the mechanical wind sensor a wider measurement range. Moreover, the results also show that a wider measurement range usually means a lower sensitivity for a single device, and hence the measurement range and the sensitivity of the mechanical wind sensor are a contradiction. The effect rule of the taper ratio presented in this paper can provide a valuable reference for the design and manufacture of 2-D mechanical wind sensors. In this paper, the design, fabrication, and characterization of a robust MEMS thermal wind sensor utilizing ceramic film packaging are proposed. The ceramic film is fabricated by means of low temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology, achieving the excellent adhesion between silicon substrate and ceramic film without any thermal adhesive. The most important is that the adverse effects of the packaging on the performance of the thermal wind sensor can be minimized by adjusting the thickness and thermal conductivity of the ceramic film during the preparation of the ceramic slurry. The influences of thickness and thermal conductivity of ceramic film on the performance of sensor have been simulated by finite element method, and the results are in reasonable agreement with theoretical analysis. The proposed sensors were tested and calibrated in a wind tunnel. Experiments results demonstrate that the sensitivity of the proposed sensor is decreased only 4.7%, compared with the sensor without ceramic film. The maximum measurement error of the proposed sensor in wind speed and direction is 0.66 m/s and 5°, respectively. Compared with the sensor packaged with $250\mu \text{m}$ ceramic carrier, the heating power of the proposed sensor is reduced by nearly 50% and the sensitivity is increased by an order of magnitude at the same time. Modeling of the packaged wind sensor operating on constant power (CP) mode is proposed in this paper. The proposed model is based on the theory of heat conduction and forced convection. The presented model indicates that the total output dc voltage is proportional to the square root of the wind speed, and ${V}_{x}$ , as well as ${V}_{y}$ , varies with the wind direction based on cosine function. The wind sensor is fabricated by microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology and packaged with the glue. The test is performed in the wind tunnel and the measured results indicate an agreement with the presented model. This paper introduces a novel sensing element scheme to improve the accuracy of 2-D micromachined thermal wind sensor. The sensing element consists of eight heaters and eight thermistors placed on ceramic substrate. The octagon-arranged sixteen resistors are divided into two wind sensing groups, cross-type group and saltire-type group. These two groups monitor wind independently, and the final measured wind speed and direction are extracted from the measurement results of the two groups. Based on this octagon-sensing design, the sensor achieves higher accuracy for wind measurement, which is verified by the experiment. The results show that for the wind speed up to 33 m/s, the sensor has a measurement error less than ±1%, and the airflow direction over the full range of 360° is determined with a maximum error of ±1.5°. This paper presents the design, fabrication, and performance of a micromachined silicon thermal wind sensor with improved sensitivity. Deep reactive ion etching (DRIE) trenches are fabricated between the heater and the thermistors to suppress the lateral heat conduction in the chip. In addition, eight thermistors symmetrically arranged in four directions around the heater form two Wheatstone full-bridges, resulting in about 50% increase of the sensitivity with respect to four thermistors. Based on these two methods, the sensitivity of the micromachined silicon thermal wind sensor is improved remarkably, which is verified by the experiment. The results show that the measurement wind speed range is up to 33 m/s in constant voltage (CV) mode with the initial heating power of 256 mW. The sensitivity is measured to be 29.37 mV/ms−1 at the wind speed 3.3 m/s, achieving improvement of about 226%, compared with that of the traditional wind sensor. Researches show that androgens have important effects on migration of endothelial cells and endothelial protection in coronary heart disease. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) as a progenitor cell type that can differentiate into endothelial cells, have a critical role in angiogenesis and endothelial protection. The relationship between androgen and the functions of EPCs has animated much interest and controversy. In this study, we investigated the angiogenic and migratory functions of EPCs after treatment by dihydrotestosterone (DHT) and the molecular mechanisms as well. We found that DHT treatment enhanced the incorporation of EPCs into tubular structures formed by HUVECs and the migratory activity of EPCs in the transwell assay dose dependently. Moreover, microarray analysis was performed to explore how DHT changes the gene expression profiles of EPCs. We found 346 differentially expressed genes in androgen-treated EPCs. Angiogenesis-related genes like Egr-1, Vcan, Efnb2, and Cdk2ap1 were identified to be regulated upon DHT treatment. Furthermore, the enhanced angiogenic and migratory abilities of EPCs after DHT treatment were inhibited by Egr1-siRNA transfection. In conclusion, our findings suggest that DHT markedly enhances the vessel forming ability and migration capacity of EPCs. Egr1 signaling may be a possible pathway in this process. Summary Motor behaviors recruit task-specific neuronal ensembles in motor cortices, which are consolidated over subsequent learning. However, little is known about the molecules that can identify the participating neurons and predict the outcomes of the consolidation process. Using a mouse rotarod-learning task, we showed that lesion or inactivation of the secondary motor (M2) cortex disrupts learning of skilled movements. We tracked the endogenous promoter activity of the neuronal activity-regulated gene Arc in individual M2 neurons during rotarod learning by in vivo two-photon imaging of a knockin reporter. We found that task training initially recruits Arc-promoter-activated neurons and then consolidates them into a specific ensemble exhibiting persistent reactivation of Arc-promoter. The intensity of a neuron’s initial Arc-promoter activation predicts its reactivation probability and neurons with weak initial Arc-promoter activation are dismissed from the ensemble during subsequent training. Background: Antioxidant vitamin (vitamin E, beta-carotene, and vitamin C) are widely used for preventing major cardiovascular outcomes. However, the effect of antioxidant vitamin on cardiovascular events remains unclear. Methodology and Principal Findings: We searched PubMed, EmBase, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, and the proceedings of major conferences for relevant literature. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials that reported on the effects of antioxidant vitamin on cardiovascular outcomes as compared to placebo. Outcomes analyzed were major cardiovascular events, myocardial infarction, stroke, cardiac death, total death, and any possible adverse events. We used the I2 statistic to measure heterogeneity between trials and calculated risk estimates for cardiovascular outcomes with random-effect meta-analysis. Independent extraction was performed by two reviewers and consensus was reached. Of 293 identified studies, we included 15 trials reporting data on 188209 participants. These studies reported 12749 major cardiovascular events, 6699 myocardial infarction, 3749 strokes, 14122 total death, and 5980 cardiac deaths. Overall, antioxidant vitamin supplementation as compared to placebo had no effect on major cardiovascular events (RR, 1.00; 95%CI, 0.96–1.03), myocardial infarction (RR, 0.98; 95%CI, 0.92–1.04), stroke (RR, 0.99; 95%CI, 0.93–1.05), total death (RR, 1.03; 95%CI, 0.98–1.07), cardiac death (RR, 1.02; 95%CI, 0.97–1.07), revascularization (RR, 1.00; 95%CI, 0.95–1.05), total CHD (RR, 0.96; 95%CI, 0.87–1.05), angina (RR, 0.98; 95%CI, 0.90–1.07), and congestive heart failure (RR, 1.07; 95%CI, 0.96 to 1.19). Conclusion/Significance: Antioxidant vitamin supplementation has no effect on the incidence of major cardiovascular events, myocardial infarction, stroke, total death, and cardiac death. Dopamine is a major neuromodulator in both vertebrates and invertebrates and has profound effects on many physiological processes, including the regulation of attention. Most studies of the functions of dopamine use models with long-term blockade of dopamine release and few effects of transient blockade have yet been reported. The goal of the present study was to determine the role of dopamine in attention-like behavior in Drosophila by taking advantage of the fly's orientation behavior during flight. The examination of several different transgenic flies in a single-target visual attention paradigm showed that flies lost their orientation ability if dopamine release was blocked from the beginning of the development of dopaminergic neurons. This is similar to the attention loss in mammals. However, if the blockade of dopamine release was induced during the experimental procedure, flies performed normally. Statistical analysis of the behavioral assessment showed a significant difference between long-term and transient blockade. Using the RNA interference approach, we generated flies with down-regulated J-domain protein, which is a potential cochaperone in synaptic vesicle release, to make an alternative form of long-term dopamine-blockade mutant. Behavioral assays revealed that flies with permanent J-domain protein down-regulation specifically in dopaminergic neurons have an attention defect similar to that induced by long-term blockade of dopamine release. Furthermore, dopamine depletion beginning at eclosion also caused an attention deficit. Introduction: This prospective, longitudinal, community-based study, EpidemiologiCal POpulatioN STudy of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in Lake CounTy, Illinois (CONTACT), investigated coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) immunity, occupational risks related to SARS-CoV-2 exposure, and long-term immunoglobulin G (IgG) seroconversion kinetics. Methods: At baseline and follow up (3, 6, and 9 months), non-hospitalized adult participants provided nasal and blood serum specimens for molecular [reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)] and serological (IgG) testing (4 November 2020–30 October 2021). Results: At baseline, 6.4% (65/1008) had evidence of current/prior SARS-CoV-2 infection. At 3, 6, and 9 months, positive PCR tests were obtained from 0.4% (3/781), 0.4% (3/733), and 0% (0/673) of participants, respectively. Positive IgG occurred at baseline and 3, 6, and 9 months in 4.5% (45/1008), 6.0% (48/799), 5.4% (39/733), and 2.8% (19/673) of participants, respectively. Of participants positive for IgG at baseline, 28 had a negative IgG test at a follow-up visit; of those 28, 21 had their first negative IgG test within 6 months. Participants were more likely to retain positive IgG if they were 18–29 years of age, were male, or had medium-high/high-risk occupations. A high vaccination rate (70% received ≥ 1 dose by 9 months) was observed. Influence of occupational status or characteristics on transmission and IgG, and COVID-19 vaccination trends, are shown. Conclusions: This study expands on prior studies assessing COVID-19 immunity and IgG seroconversion by including both RT-PCR and serologic testing and longitudinal follow-up of study participants. We observed decreased infection rates over the 9 month follow-up period as well as a decline in IgG persistency after 6 months. The findings from this community-based study regarding vaccinate rates, infection rates by PCR, and IgG persistency over time can help improve our understanding of COVID-19 immunity, occupational risks related to SARS-CoV-2 exposure, and the kinetics of long-term IgG seroconversion, which is important to help guide local and national mitigation strategies. Introduction: Ascending aorta or hemi‐arch replacement is a frequently used treatment for patients with acute type A thoracic aortic dissection, particularly those who are elderly or have multiple comorbidities. However, in cases where there are secondary entry tears in the aortic arch or descending aorta, this procedure may not fully resolve the issue. The true lumen may remain compressed due to perfusion of the false lumen and usually require reoperation. Methods: Between January 2019 and July 2022, 18 patients underwent endovascular total aortic arch repair and fenestration technique without requiring median re‐sternotomy. Aortic stent grafts were implanted via the femoral approach, utilizing prosthetic vessels as an appropriate proximal landing zone for aortic stent graft deployment. Based on the debranching conditions of the arch in previous surgery, single, double or triple in situ fenestrations (ISFs) were performed, respectively. Results: All 18 cases were technically successful, with a median follow‐up period of 20 months (range: 18–31 months). All patients had a favourable postoperative course, with no deaths within 30 days or during their hospital stay. There were no instances of disabling stroke, paraplegia, endo‐leak, stent graft migration or stent graft‐induced new entry. In addition, all patients exhibited complete thrombosis of the false lumen at the level of the aortic arch. Conclusion: Our preliminary experience suggests that endovascular total arch repair combined with ISF technique is a viable, effective and safe option for treatment. A self-heated double Wheatstone bridge configuration for a 2-D wind sensor is presented. Without a central heating element, eight thermistors are symmetrically arranged in two orthogonal directions, and four of them in each direction make up a Wheatstone bridge. The eight thermistors simultaneously act as the heating sources and temperature sensing elements. By applying the constant current supply to the bridge, the terminal voltage across the bridge and the bridge output voltage are utilized to measure the wind speed and direction, respectively. The 2-D wind sensor has been simulated numerically and fabricated directly on the ceramic substrate. Experiments demonstrate that the measured speed varies from 0 to 40 m/s with an error less than ±2 m/s while the measured direction spans from 0° to 360° with an error less than ±3° after calibration. In this paper, we present a robust, low-power and wide-range MEMS thermal wind sensor, which is based on a glass reflow process. A general analytical model is first proposed for obtaining the heater's temperature and the temperature distribution on the sensor surface. Based on this model, the effect of the sensor's geometry and package on the sensor's performance is investigated. These results demonstrate how the measurement range and the sensitivity of the sensor can be optimized with a change in structural geometries. Besides, it has shown that the package structure of the sensor is also important for obtaining the required performance. Then, calculated results are validated with 2-D finite element method (FEM) solver CMOSOL. It is found that although there is some deviation between theoretical and simulation results, the model can have good reference value for latter MEMS thermal wind sensor design. Finally, the sensor is characterized in a wind tunnel. At a constant heating power of 14.5 mW, measurement results show that the sensor can detect airflow speeds of up to 33 m/s, with an accuracy better than 0.5 m/s at low speeds and 5% Full-Scale at high speeds. Most wind energy harvesters that are based on wind-induced vibrations can only operate in a specific wind direction, which limits their application in environments with time-varying wind directions. Previously reported in-plane omnidirectional piezoelectric wind energy harvesters (PWEHs) based on vortex-induced vibrations can produce stable electrical output characteristics when the wind direction changes, but their output powers are relatively low and the working wind speed ranges are relatively narrow. To solve this issue, this work presents an in-plane omnidirectional flutter PWEH which is mainly composed of the bluff body of a hollow cylindrical shell and the inside elastic supporting structure of several piezoelectric composite beams. Finite element analysis shows that harvesters with both four and six supporting beams offer good stiffness and electromechanical conversion isotropies. Experiments demonstrate that both prototype devices are flutter PWEHs with rotation axes located on the rear of the geometrical center of the bluff body. The effect of wind speed on their directionality is small, and both prototypes show in-plane omnidirectional operation over a wide wind speed range, over which the electrical outputs remain relatively high. The prototype with six beams is preferred from the viewpoint of the wind direction adaptability. The onset wind speeds in different directions all range between 5.8 and 6.0 m/s, showing the good isotropy. The minimum and maximum powers are approximately 266.4 and 300.1 μW, respectively, at 10 m/s, and it shows in-plane omnidirectional energy harvesting performance in the wind speed range from 6.5 m/s up to more than 10 m/s. Introduction: EpidemiologiCal POpulatioN STudy of SARS-CoV-2 in Lake CounTy, Illinois (CONTACT) is an observational, epidemiological study with a 9-month longitudinal follow-up of nonhospitalized persons aged 18 years or older currently living or employed in Lake County, IL. We describe the study design and report baseline characteristics of the study participants, including the proportion of participants with acute or previous SARS-CoV-2 infection at enrollment.At enrollment and subsequent timepoints, participants recruited through digital and paper-based advertising campaigns reported their occupational and school-based exposure, risk factors, and behaviors, and provided nasal and serum specimens. Stratified enrichment was used to enhance enrollment into medium- and higher-risk groups within four occupational risk groups for SARS-CoV-2 infection. RT-PCR and serologic (IgG) testing were conducted to detect acute or previous SARS-CoV-2 infection in participants, respectively.Between November 2020 and January 2021, 1008 participants (female 70.7%, mean age ± SD 51 ± 13.8 years) completed the questionnaire and diagnostic testing. Among participants, 41.8% (n = 421) were considered low risk, 24.6% (n = 248) were medium-to-low risk, 22.3% (n = 225) were medium-to-high risk, and 11.3% (n = 114) were high risk. Of 56 (5.6%) participants with evidence of acute or previous SARS-CoV-2 infection at baseline, 11 (19.6%) were RT-PCR-positive, 36 (64.3%) were IgG-seropositive, and 9 (16.1%) were positive by both assays. We describe the study design and report baseline characteristics of the study participants, including the proportion of participants with acute or previous SARS-CoV-2 infection at enrollment.At enrollment and subsequent timepoints, participants recruited through digital and paper-based advertising campaigns reported their occupational and school-based exposure, risk factors, and behaviors, and provided nasal and serum specimens. Stratified enrichment was used to enhance enrollment into medium- and higher-risk groups within four occupational risk groups for SARS-CoV-2 infection. RT-PCR and serologic (IgG) testing were conducted to detect acute or previous SARS-CoV-2 infection in participants, respectively.Between November 2020 and January 2021, 1008 participants (female 70.7%, mean age ± SD 51 ± 13.8 years) completed the questionnaire and diagnostic testing. Among participants, 41.8% (n = 421) were considered low risk, 24.6% (n = 248) were medium-to-low risk, 22.3% (n = 225) were medium-to-high risk, and 11.3% (n = 114) were high risk. Of 56 (5.6%) participants with evidence of acute or previous SARS-CoV-2 infection at baseline, 11 (19.6%) were RT-PCR-positive, 36 (64.3%) were IgG-seropositive, and 9 (16.1%) were positive by both assays. Participants who were adherent vs nonadherent to social distancing measures (odds ratio [95% CI] 0.8 [0.4–1.8]) were less likely, while those in higher vs lower occupational risk groups (2.0 [1.0–4.4]) were more likely to have evidence for acute or previous SARS-CoV-2 infection.In fall/winter 2020/21, 5.6% of adults in a Lake County convenience sample had evidence for acute or previous SARS-CoV-2 infection at baseline. Nonadherence to social distancing measures and high-risk professions were associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Abstract: Objective: To investigate the possible role of apolipoprotein M (ApoM) in the development of coronary artery disease (CAD). Design and methods: Case-controlled study, which consisted of 118 CAD patients and 255 unrelated subjects used as control group. Plasma concentration of ApoM was determined by dot blot, severity of CAD was expressed with Gensini score or the numbers of lesioned coronary arteries, and serum lipid levels were also measured. Results and discussion: Our study shows the mean level of plasma ApoM is 1.3757±0.1493 ODu mm−2 in CAD patients, while it is 1.3502±0.1288 ODu mm−2 in control group, and there are significant differences in plasma level of ApoM between two groups (t =0.032, P <0.05). Concentration of plasma ApoM is positively associated with plasma total cholesterol (r =0.38, P =0.025), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (r =0.29, P =0.03), low density lipoprotein cholesterol (r =0.16, P =0.03) and apolipoproein A–I (r =0.24, P =0.03). Multiple logistic and linear regression analysis showed that plasma concentration of ApoM did not correlate either with the number of lesioned coronaries or the Gensini score after adjusted for conventional cardiovascular risk factors (P >0.05, respectively). Conclusion: The findings suggest that ApoM could not be an independent risk factor but a biomarker of CAD. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Mushroom bodies (MBs), one of the central brain structures in Drosophila melanogaster, are involved in several cognitive behaviors, such as olfactory learning and memory, visual context generalization, choice behavior facing conflicting cues. Attention is a cognitive behavior, and it facilitates a focus on the attended event while filtering out irrelevant events, thereby allowing more rapid and accurate reactions at a lower threshold in primates. Using the visual orientation paradigm in a flight simulator, we observed that MBs modulate salience-based selective fixation behavior, which resembles attention in primates to a certain degree. We found that the fixation ability of MB-deficient flies was significantly reduced when the contrast levels were lowered as well as when a certain amount of background noise was applied. Moreover, MB-deficient flies exhibited poor object fixation ability in the presence of an olfactory ‘distracter’. Furthermore, during visual selection among multiple objects of different contrast, flies with MBs were able to ‘pop-out’ of the most salient object in a three-object selection paradigm. Finally, we determined that flies exhibited cross-modal synergistic integration between olfactory and visual signals during object-fixation behavior, which was independent of MBs. Taken together, our findings suggest that MBs do not contribute to cross-modal synergetic integration between olfactory and visual signals; instead, they confer sensory gain control and inhibitory gating in flies, this property allows entry of the salient signal as well as filters out background noise and irrelevant signals.
