Purpose: This study aims to investigate the joint effects of cancer and sleep disorders on the health-related quality of life (HRQoL), healthcare resource utilization, and expenditures among US adults. Methods: Utilizing the 2018-2019 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey (MEPS) database, a sample of 25,274 participants was categorized into four groups based on cancer and sleep disorder status. HRQoL was assessed using the VR-12 questionnaire. Generalized linear model (GLM) with a log-linear regression model combined gamma distribution was applied for the analysis of healthcare expenditure data. Results: Individuals with both cancer and sleep disorders (C+/S+) exhibited notably lower physical health (PCS) and mental health (MCS) scores—1.45 and 1.87 points lower, respectively. They also showed significantly increased clinic visits (2.12 times), outpatient visits (3.59 times), emergency visits (1.69 times), and total medical expenditures (2.08 times) compared to those without cancer or sleep disorders (C-/S-). In contrast, individuals with sleep disorders alone (C-/S+) had the highest number of prescription drug usage (2.26 times) and home health care days (1.76 times) compared to the reference group (C-/S-). Conclusions: Regardless of cancer presence, individuals with sleep disorders consistently reported compromised HRQoL. Furthermore, those with cancer and sleep disorders experienced heightened healthcare resource utilization, underscoring the considerable impact of sleep disorders on overall quality of life. Implications for cancer survivors: The findings of this study address the importance of sleep disorders among cancer patients and their potential implications for cancer care. Tight gas reservoirs with mobile water exhibit multi-phase flow and high stress sensitivity. Accurately analyzing the reservoir and well parameters using conventional single-phase rate transient analysis methods proves challenging. This study introduces novel rate transient analysis methods incorporating evaluation processes based on the conventional flowing material balance method and the Blasingame type-curve method to examine fractured gas wells producing water. By positing a gas-water two-phase equivalent homogenous phase that considers characteristics of mobile water, gas, and high stress sensitivity, the conventional single-phase rate transient analysis methods can be applied by integrating the phase's characteristics and defining the phase's normalized parameters and material balance pseudotime. The rate transient analysis methods based on the equivalent homogenous phase can be used to quantitatively assess the parameters of wells and gas reservoirs, such as original gas-in-place, fracture half-length, reservoir permeability, and well drainage radius. This facilitates the analysis of production dynamics of fractured wells and well-controlled areas, subsequently aiding in locating residual gas and guiding the configuration of well patterns. The specific evaluation processes are detailed. Additionally, a numerical simulation mechanism model was constructed to verify the reliability of the developed methods. Solving linear equations is a basic and significant mathematical task, and it can be executed by variational quantum algorithm (VQA) with quantum advantages by leveraging near‐term quantum device and classical optimizer. In the above algorithm, the coefficient matrix should be decomposed first but slowly with the traditional method, for realizing an effective quantum circuit. In this paper, a general framework for preparing a fast Pauli decomposition for solving arbitrary linear equations using VQA is proposed. This method has a simpler form and reduces the complexity of matrix decomposition compared with the traditional one. Moreover, the concrete tables of two and three qubits cases are given for looking up quickly and the instances of Toeplitz matrix, Yule–Walker, and arbitrary equations are demonstrated. Objective: Cerebral circulation time (CCT) and collateral score (CS) are associated with functional outcomes in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients after endovascular treatment (EVT), and may be related to each other. We aim to determine the relationship between CS and CCT on functional outcomes. Methods: We retrospectively enrolled consecutive patients with anterior circulation large vessel occlusion (LVO) AIS who received EVT. CS and CCT were measured based on digital subtraction angiography (DSA). We defined CS 0–2 and 3–4 as poor and good collateral status, respectively, and used change of CCT (cCCT), which was defined as the change of stroke side CCT (sCCT) versus healthy side CCT (hCCT). Mediating analysis was used to evaluate the influence of cCCT on the association between CS and functional outcomes, and ROC curves were further used to explore the predictive ability of the interaction between cCCT and CS for functional outcomes. Results: A total of 100 patients were enrolled in the final analysis. A higher cCCT (r = −0.239; p = 0.017) was associated with lower CS, and cCCT mediated the association of CS with functional outcome. Logistic regression analysis found that CS, cCCT and cCCT‐CS interactions were independently associated with functional outcome, and cCCT‐CS interaction has better predictive performance, with a higher area under curve value than CS or cCCT alone (0.79 vs. 0.75 or 0.75). Interpretation: To our knowledge, this study provides the first report of the association of collateral status with cCCT, and their interaction effect on functional outcome in AIS‐LVO patients receiving EVT. Recent advances with large-scale pre-trained language models (e.g., BERT) have brought significant potential to natural language processing. However, the large model size hinders their use in IoT and edge devices. Several studies have utilized task-specific knowledge distillation to compress the pre-trained language models. However, to reduce the number of layers in a large model, a sound strategy for distilling knowledge to a student model with fewer layers than the teacher model is lacking. In this work, we present Layer-wise Adaptive Distillation (LAD), a task-specific distillation framework that can be used to reduce the model size of BERT. We design an iterative aggregation mechanism with multiple gate blocks in LAD to adaptively distill layer-wise internal knowledge from the teacher model to the student model. The proposed method enables an effective knowledge transfer process for a student model, without skipping any teacher layers. Due to dissolution, weathering and erosion, limestone and marble form karstic landscape with precipitous hills, rugged valleys, caves and sinkholes. In the event of an intrusion, the magma, which resides below the limestone bedrock will ascend toward the earth's surface and fill up the fractures within the pre-existing rocks, forming dikes and sills. Dikes and veins can also be formed when minerals precipitate from hydrothermal fluids within a fracture. The objective of this study was to determine the texture and mineralogy of the dikes cutting the marble in the study area. The findings suggest that the mineral composition and physical structure of the dikes differ from the marble host rock based on its mineral, chemical and physical properties. Three samples were collected and analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) and petrographic microscope. The results show that there are at least two types of dike, which are quartz and a coarse-grained granite dike at the study area. The presence of these dikes may affect the chemical and mechanical properties of aggregates produced from the quarry, and in turn affect the excavated rocks of its usage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A technique using the single-string, closed-loop fixation method to reposit dislocated triple-looped haptic intraocular lens (IOL)–capsular bag complex is described. The long needle or curved needle with a 10-0/8-0 polypropylene suture and a 27/30-gauge needle were used as the guide needle to pass through the fenestrated haptics twice. The scleral interlaminar course was used as the fixed point. Last, a fixation knot was created in the sclerotomy by the 2 ends of the thread to close the suture loop for IOL fixation. Another knot was created about 2 to 3 mm from the exit point and was intrasclerally anchored by the aid of the attached needle. 4 eyes from 4 consecutive patients were studied retrospectively; during all follow-up visits, the IOLs were well centered and stable, and no suture erosion, hypotony, scleral atrophy, chronic inflammation, retinal tears, and/or detachments were observed. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen governance and improve this phenomenon. This study intends to investigate the mode in which the disinfection supply center participates in the supervision and management of the management of sterile items in clinical departments. It played a role in improving the standardization of the management of sterile articles in clinical departments and ensured the closed-loop management of the sterilization effectiveness of sterile articles. Methods. Every quarter, the disinfection supply center of our hospital will inspect the standardized management of sterile articles in all clinical departments of the hospital, mainly including the storage environment and facilities of sterile articles, the cleanliness of storage cabinets, placement principles, whether they are stored by category, and the quality and validity management of sterile articles. The quarterly inspection results were summarized and analyzed to find the existing problems and the causes. The disinfection supply center shall supervise the improvement. After the disinfection supply center inspected the standardized management of sterile articles in all clinical departments of the hospital for the first time according to the inspection contents, under the guidance and assistance of the nursing department and the hospital infection department, it improved the sterile article management system, conducted knowledge training for the whole hospital, and incorporated the standardized management of clinical sterile articles into the quality control inspection of the nursing department. In the later stage, the disinfection supply center is responsible for conducting routine inspection and supervision on the standardized management of sterile articles in all clinical departments of the hospital every quarter according to the inspection contents, including summarizing, analyzing, and urging the clinical departments to achieve the improvement of the management of sterile articles in clinical departments. Results. The standardization of aseptic articles after improvement was significantly higher than before and during improvement, and the qualified rate was significantly different (99.4% vs 97.9% vs 89.5%, P < 0.05). The average number of lost packages caused by nonstandard management in the department was significantly reduced. The average rate of lost sterile packages during and after the improvement was significantly lower than that before the improvement (10.5% vs 97.9% vs 89.5%, P < 0.05). It also effectively reduced the cost caused by the loss of sterile packages. Conclusion. The disinfection supply center participates in the quality control and management of sterile articles in the nursing department and regularly inspects and supervises the management of sterile articles in clinical departments. The surface of graphene oxide (GO) with different oxidation levels is widely used in gas sensing applications. 1,1-Dimethylhydrazine (unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine, UDMH) as a highly toxic and volatile pollution gas has long been investigated and discussed. The research reported here examined the stable structure of GO surface by first principles calculation. Furthermore, the adsorption mechanism of UDMH on the stable GO surface was explored and the optimal adsorption distance and upper limit of adsorption quantity were determined with their adsorption energy calculated. The results reveal that the hydroxyl group on GO did a great service to the UDMH adsorption and the UDMH tends to approach GO from the direction of -NH2, with distance being 2.9 Å. Hydrocarbon production in oil and gas fields generally progresses through stages of production ramp-up, plateau (peak), and decline during field development, with the whole process primarily modeled and forecasted using lifecycle models. SINOPEC's conventional gas reservoirs are dominated by carbonates, low-permeability tight sandstone, condensate, volcanic rocks, and medium-to-high-permeability sandstone. This study identifies the optimal production forecasting models by comparing the fitting coefficients of different models and calculating the relative errors in technically recoverable reserves. To improve forecast precision, it suggests substituting exponential smoothing method-derived predictions for anomalous data caused by subjective influences like market dynamics and maintenance activities. The preferred models for carbonate gas reservoir production forecasts are the generalized Weng's, Beta, Class-I generalized mathematical, and Hu-Chen models. The Vapor pressure and Beta models are optimal for forecasting the annual productivity of wells (APW) from gas-bearing low-permeability tight sandstone reservoirs. The Wang-Li, Beta, and Yu QT tb models are apt for moderate-to-small-reserves, single low-permeability tight sandstone gas reservoirs. The Rayleigh, Hu-Chen, and generalized Weng's models are suitable for condensate gas reservoirs. Unsymmetrical dimethylhydrazine (UDMH) contaminated waste gas and related intermediates pose a great threat to human health. TiO2–reduced graphene oxide aerogel (rGA) samples with different graphene content levels were synthetized and characterized for the degradation of UDMH. The effects of GO content, humidity, and temperature were investigated under UV and VUV light, with highest UDMH conversion values of 68% and 95%, respectively. Compared with pure TiO2, the enhanced degradation activity of TiO2–rGA under UV light can be attributed to a synergetic effect between absorption and photocatalysis, while the high UDMH conversion under VUV light relies on photolysis and ozonation. The high oxygen-containing group content, rather than a high SSA, and electron trapping by graphene are key factors determining the outstanding performance of TiO2–rGA with 80 mg of GO. Objectives: This study will evaluate the results of parameters measured during a treadmill exercise test to predict marathon performances. Methods: We studied 171 Chinese recreational athletes who participated in marathons or half-marathons (42.2 k or 21.1 k, respectively) between October 2016 and December 2017. The participants completed a survey that included questions about demographics and training, and they underwent a treadmill exercise test according to the Bruce protocol. The number of years in training, mean weekly hours of training, mean weekly training volume, and performance time in subsequent marathon events were recorded and analyzed in this study. Results: The total exercise times achieved on the treadmill test were significantly longer for men compared to women (P < 0. 0 1). The performance times in the half-marathons were significantly shorter for men compared to women (P < 0. 0 1). Training volume was the only independent predictor of total exercise time on the treadmill and performance time in marathons and half-marathons (all P < 0. 0 5). The western diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox) is a common and widespread North American pit viper species, and its venom possesses medical applications. In this research, we identified 14 of the most common transcripts encoding 11 major venom toxins including transcripts for a three-finger toxin (3FTx) from the crude venom of C. atrox. In silico three-dimensional (3D) structures of 9 venom toxins were predicted by using deduced toxin amino acid sequences and a computer programme-MODELLER. The accuracy of all predicted toxin structures was evaluated by five stereochemical structure parameters including discrete optimised protein energy (DOPE) score, root mean square deviation (RMSD), Z-score, overall quality factor (ERRAT), and f/? dihedral angle distribution of toxin backbone Ca residues, resulting that the overall predicted models are satisfied quality evaluation checks. Our present toxin transcripts and simulated individual toxin structures are important not only for revealing species-specific venom gene expression profiles, but also for predicting the toxin-toxin interactions and designing the structure-based toxin inhibitors for the treatment of snakebites. Background: Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is increasingly performed in younger patients despite the lack of comprehensive assessment of long-term outcomes. We systematically reviewed the contemporary literature to assess the 1) indications, 2) implant selection and long-term survivorship, 3) complication and reoperation rates and 4) radiographic and functional outcomes of primary THA in patients younger than 55 years.Methods: We searched the Embase and MEDLINE databases for English-language articles published between 2000 and 2018 that reported outcomes of primary THA in patients younger than 55 years with a minimum follow-up duration of 10 years.Results: Thirty-two studies reporting on 3219 THA procedures performed in 2434 patients met our inclusion criteria. The most common preoperative diagnoses were avascular necrosis (1044 [32.4%]), osteoarthritis (870 [27.0%]) and developmental dysplasia of the hip (627 [19.5%]). Modular implants (3001 [93.2%]), cementless fixation (2214 [68.8%]) and metal-on-polyethylene bearings (1792 [55.7%]) were frequently used. The mean 5- and 10-year survival rates were 98.7% and 94.6%, respectively. Data on survival beyond 10 years were heterogeneous, with values of 27%–99.5% at 10–14 years, 59%–84% at 15–19 years, 70%–77% at 20–24 years and 60% at 25–30 years. Rates of dislocation, deep infection and reoperation for any reason were 2.4%, 1.2% and 16.3%, respectively. The mean Harris Hip Score improved from 43.6/100 to 91.0/100.Conclusion: Total hip arthroplasty in patients younger than 55 years provides reliable outcomes at up to 10 years. Kratom has caught the attention of governments, policymakers, and academicians due to its unique characteristics. This paper explores the scholarly works related to the different aspects of Kratom to elucidate its research progress and identify future research agendas. We reviewed existing publications on Kratom using a bibliometric methodology. By analyzing 431 scientific publications, we identified publication sources, document analysis, countries analysis, and research keywords, which helped us understand the research locus on Kratom. After reviewing the publications, we discovered significant disagreements in categorizing and defining Kratom amongst authors based on their nationalities. We also showed the knowledge structure of existing publications via thematic analysis, illustrating that the studies focused on the opioid nature of Kratom. Also, drug abuse-related issues evolved as the motor theme of research, while other aspects are prevalent as niche or emerging research themes. This paper contributes to the literature by providing a broad idea of existing literature and offering a comprehensive outlook on Kratom, which could be helpful for policy formulation in the future. Congenital bicuspid aortic valve (BAV), the most common form of birth defect in humans, is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality. Increasing evidence demonstrates that genetic risk factors play a key role in the pathogenesis of BAV. However, BAV is a genetically heterogeneous disease and the genetic determinants underpinning BAV in an overwhelming majority of patients remain unknown. In the present study, the coding exons and flanking introns of the GATA6 gene, which encodes a zinc-finger transcription factor essential for the normal development of the aortic valves, were sequenced in 152 unrelated patients with congenital BAV. The available relatives of a proband harboring an identified GATA6 mutation and 200 unrelated, ethnically matched healthy individuals used as controls were also genotyped for GATA6 . The functional characteristics of the mutation were analyzed by using a dual-luciferase reporter assay system. As a result, a novel heterozygous GATA6 mutation, p.E386X, was identified in a family with BAV transmitted in an autosomal dominant mode. The nonsense mutation was absent in 400 control chromosomes. Biological assays revealed that the mutant GATA6 protein had no transcriptional activity compared with its wild-type counterpart. Furthermore, the mutation disrupted the synergistic transcriptional activation between GATA6 and GATA4, another transcription factor causally linked to BAV. In conclusion, this study firstly associates GATA6 loss-of-function mutation with enhanced susceptibility to familial BAV, which provides novel insight into the molecular mechanism of BAV, implying potential implications for genetic counseling and personalized management of BAV patients. The characterization of indoor (a naturally ventilated office) and outdoor (adjacent courtyard) metals in PM2.5during a winter period in Xi'an, China were carried out. The results indicated that the average mass concentrations of PM2.5in indoor and outdoor environments all exceeded the daily average limit of 75 µg m–3set by the Chinese government. The dominant metals in PM2.5were Ca, Al, Zn, Mg, Fe, and Pb in both indoor and outdoor air. Concentration of As was much higher than the standard of 6 ng m–3issued by the government. Enrichment factor analysis showed that anthropogenic emissions might be the primary sources of As, Cd, Pb, and Zn, while crust was the main origin of Co. A majority of indoor-to-outdoor concentration ratios of metal were lower than 1 indicating mostly the contribution of outdoor sources rather than indoor ones. As and Cr in both indoor and outdoor air posed the highest noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks, respectively. The noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were 2.74 and 2.54 × 10−4indoor and 4.04 and 3.87 × 10−4outdoor, which suggested that possible adverse health effects should be of concern. Resveratrol, a naturally occurring polyphenolic compound, exhibits a neuroprotective role in models of central nervous system diseases, including cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury. Apurinic/apyrimidinic endonuclease 1 (APE1) is a multifunctional enzyme that contributes to base excision repair of oxidative DNA damage and redox activation of transcription factors, associated with neuronal survival against hypoxic-ischemic injury. It was hypothesized that resveratrol protects HT22 cells against oxygen-glucose deprivation and re-oxygenation (OGD/R)-induced injuries through upregulation of APE1. It was demonstrated that resveratrol pretreatment significantly increased the viability of HT22 cells and decreased the release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), accompanied by the upregulation of APE1 mRNA, and protein levels, as well as the activity of APE1 under OGD/R conditions. In addition, resveratrol reversed OGD/R-induced oxidative DNA damage as evidenced by the decreases in the levels of 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine and APE sites. However, APE1 knockdown using short hairpin RNA sequence targeting APE1 abolished resveratrol-elicited beneficent effects against OGD/R-induced cytotoxicity and oxidative stress. This was indicated by decreased cell viability, superoxide dismutase activity and glutathione levels, and increased LDH release and reactive oxygen species levels. The results of the present study indicate that APE1 contributes to the protective effects of resveratrol against neonatal hypoxic-ischemic brain injuries, and suggest that DNA repair enzymes, including APE1, may be a unique strategy for neuroprotection against this disease. An electrowetting-on-dielectric (EWOD) electrode was developed that facilitates the use of low alternating voltages (≤5 VAC). This allows online investigation of the frequency dependence of electrowetting by means of impedance spectroscopy. The EWOD electrode is based on a dielectric bilayer consisting of an anodic tantalum pentoxide (Ta2O5) thin film (d = 59.35 nm) with a high relative permittivity (εd = 26.3) and a self-assembled hydrophobic silane monolayer. The frequency dependence of electrowetting was studied using an aqueous μL-sized sessile droplet on the planar EWOD electrode in oil. Experiments using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and optical imaging indicate the frequency dependence of all three variables in the Young-Lippmann equation: the voltage drop across the dielectric layers, capacitance per unit area, and contact angle under voltage. The electrowetting behavior induced by AC voltages is shown to be well described by the Young-Lippmann equation for AC applications below a frequency threshold. Moreover, the dielectric layers act as a capacitor and the stored electrostatic potential energy is revealed to only partially contribute to the electrowetting. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) is an idiopathic inflammatory disease. The initial lesions are typically found in the metaphyses, generally without periosteal reaction.Case Presentation: We present a case of a 14-year-old female teenager with relapsing and remitting right iliac pain. There was no evidence of infectious organisms, neoplastic processes, or hematologic malignancy based on laboratory tests. Initial computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated atypical periosteal proliferation in the right ilium. Histopathology demonstrated only non-specific chronic inflammation compatible with CRMO. Two years later, this patient developed left humeral pain. MRI and CT images revealed thickening and marrow edema involving the humeral cortex.Conclusions: This case highlights that CRMO can begin as a unifocal lesion and also possibly within the ilium, despite usually being multifocal and involving the long bone metaphysis. Congenital atrial septal defect (ASD) and progressive atriventricular block (AVB) are the two most common phenotypes linked to NK2 homeobox 5 (NKX2.5) mutations in animals and humans. However, the prevalence and spectrum of NKX2.5 mutation in patients with ASD and AVB remain to be elucidated. In the present study, the coding exons and flanking introns of the NKX2.5 gene, which encodes a homeobox-containing transcription factor essential for development of the heart, were sequenced in a cohort of 62 unrelated patients with ASD and AVB, and subsequently in a mutation carrier's available family members. As controls, 300 unrelated, ethnically-matched healthy individuals were recruited, who were also genotyped for NKX2.5. The functional consequence of the mutant NKX2.5 was evaluated in contrast to its wild-type counterpart using a dual-luciferase reporter assay system. As a result, a novel heterozygous NKX2.5 mutation, p.Q181X, was identified in an index patient with ASD and AVB, with a prevalence of ~1.61%. Genetic analysis of the proband's pedigree revealed that the mutation co-segregated with ASD and AVB with complete penetrance. The nonsense mutation, which eliminated partial homeobox and the carboxyl terminus, was absent in the 600 control chromosomes. Functional evaluation showed that the NKX2.5 mutant had no transcriptional activity. Furthermore, the mutation disrupted the synergistic activation between NKX2.5 and GATA binding protein 4, another cardiac core transcription factor associated with ASD. The results of the present study expand the spectrum of NKX2.5 mutations linked to ASD and AVB, and indicated that NKX2.5 loss-of-function mutations are an uncommon cause of ASD and AVB in humans. Congenital heart disease (CHD) represents the most frequent developmental deformity in human beings and accounts for substantial morbidity and mortality worldwide. Accumulating investigations underscore the strong inherited basis of CHD, and pathogenic variations in >100 genes have been related to CHD. Nevertheless, the heritable defects underpinning CHD remain elusive in most cases, mainly because of the pronounced genetic heterogeneity. In this investigation, a four-generation family with CHD was recruited and clinically investigated. Via whole-exome sequencing and Sanger sequencing assays in selected family members, a heterozygous variation in the SMAD4 gene (coding for a transcription factor essential for cardiovascular morphogenesis), NM_005359.6: c.285T > A; p.(Tyr95*), was identified to be in co-segregation with autosomal-dominant CHD in the entire family. The truncating variation was not observed in 460 unrelated non-CHD volunteers employed as control subjects. Functional exploration by dual-reporter gene analysis demonstrated that Tyr95*-mutant SMAD4 lost transactivation of its two key downstream target genes NKX2.5 and ID2 , which were both implicated with CHD. Additionally, the variation nullified the synergistic transcriptional activation between SMAD4 and GATA4, another transcription factor involved in CHD. These data strongly indicate SMAD4 may be associated with CHD and shed more light on the molecular pathogenesis underlying CHD, implying potential implications for antenatal precise prevention and prognostic risk stratification of the patients affected with CHD. Interferon inducible transmembrane protein 3 (IFITM3) is a double transmembrane protein. As a member of the IFITM family, IFITM3 can be upregulated by interferon (IFN) to be involved in various biological processes. In order to determine whether gene expression profiles can be altered by a lack of IFITM3, the present study used shRNAs lentivirus for knocking down the endogenous expression of IFITM3 in human HeLa cells and human whole genome microarrays to obtain gene expression profiles. A total of 1,011 downregulated transcripts and 615 upregulated transcripts were identified using the Agilent expression platform. The identified transcripts were involved in multiple pathways, including the complement pathways, and the antigen processing and presentation pathway. The present study identified the transcripts, which were affected by the downregulation of endogenous IFITM3 and the pathways they were involved in. Langkawi lies within the North-western Domain of Western Belt of Peninsular Malaysia which belongs to Sundaland and is composed of Palaeozoic sedimentary rocks, varying from the Cambrian to the Permian in age; Machinchang, Setul, Singa, and Chuping formations. Understanding the sediment depositional setting is a fundamental process in providing necessary information regarding the area's geologic history. The study's significance is to emphasize that the sedimentology, stratigraphy, and depositional environment must become the focal point of the inter-disciplinary research necessary to advance our understanding of the complex behaviors of the Earth. Updating and improving the sedimentary facies is vital to establishing a precise chronology of past events by completing the sedimentary sequences. The study involved the analysis of three sedimentary logs recorded within exposed rock sections of the Machinchang Formation in Langkawi. All sedimentary logs were then correlated to getting a composite log representing the entire succession sequence. The facies analysis belonging to Machinchang Formation shows the presence of nine facies types (F1 to F9) for this succession which can be assigned to four facies associations; tidal flat (FA1) represented by F1, F2, F3 and F4, upper shoreface (FA2) represents by F1 and F6, lower shoreface (FA3) represented by F1, F2 and F5 and foreshore (FA4) are represented by F1, F2, F7, F8 and F9. Due to limited information, this paper aims to present a detailed facies analysis and depositional environment of the Carboniferous age, Singa Formation at Pulau Ular, Langkawi, Kedah. One exposed outcrop at Hill C was examined in detail, and one sedimentary log was created. The log is categorized bed by bed into several facies according to lithology and sedimentary structures. The focus was to identify the facies succession and to analyze the depositional environment as Singa Formation. This study is vital to reconstructing the pattern of past glacial as it will provide the crucial link between glacial processes and history, ice masses, and a more comprehensive Earth system. The Singa Formation is concluded into coarsening upward facies successions based on the facies succession grades upward from offshore facies. The depositional environment of Pulau Ular is interpreted as a coastal and a glacier depositional environment. Eight facies have been recognized; shale (FC1), shale with burrows (FC2), siltstone (FC3), shale with burrows, clay to silt (FC4), laminated shale with dropstone (FC5), sandstone that consists of dropstone (FC6), shale consists of dropstone (FC7) and sandstone with diamictite rock (FC8). Many microorganisms could naturally produce ( R, R)-2,3-butanediol (( R, R)-2,3-BD), which has unique applications due to its special chiral group and spatial configuration. But the low enantio-purity of the product hindered the development of large-scale production. In this work, a synthetic constitutive metabolic pathway for enantiomerically pure ( R, R)-2,3-BD biosynthesis was constructed in Escherichia coli with vector pUC6S, which does not contain any lac sequences. The expression of this artificial constructed gene cluster was optimized by using two different strength of promoters (AlperPLTet01 (P) and AlperBB (P)). The strength of P is twice stronger than P. The fermentation results suggested that the yield of ( R, R)-2,3-BD was higher when using the stronger promoter. Compared with the wild type, the recombinant strain E. coli YJ2 produced a small amount of acetic acid and showed higher glucose consumption rate and higher cell density, which indicated a protection against acetic acid inhibition. In order to further increase the ( R, R)-2,3-BD production by reducing the accumulation of its precursor acetoin, the synthetic operon was reconstructed by adding the strong promoter P in front of the gene ydjL coding for the enzyme of ( R, R)-2,3-BD dehydrogenase which catalyzes the conversion of acetoin to ( R, R)-2,3-BD. The engineered strain E. coli YJ3 showed a 20 % decrease in acetoin production compared with that of E. coli YJ2. After optimization the fermentation conditions, 30.5 g/L of ( R, R)-2,3-BD and 3.2 g/L of acetoin were produced from 80 g/L of glucose within 18 h, with an enantio-purity over 99 %. An UHPLC–QTOF-MS/MS based metabolomics and chemical profiling approach was developed to identify the characteristic chemical markers for inspecting sulfur-fumigated Radix Angelicae Sinensis (S-RAS). Two sulfur-containing compounds in S-RAS were discovered and deduced to be (3 Z )-6-sulfite-ligustilide and (3 E )-6-sulfite-ligustilide. Furthermore, utilizing extraction ion method with the typical ion ( m/z 271.06) of (3 Z )-6-sulfite-ligustilide/(3 E )-6-sulfite-ligustilide as the diagnostic ion, another six sulfur-containing components were determined in S-RAS, and identified as 6, 8-disulfite-ligustilide and 8-sulfite-ligustilide or their isomers. The generation mechanisms of these compounds were proposed as the addition reaction of sulfurous acid with ( Z )-ligustilide and/or ( E )-ligustilide, two major naturally occurring components in RAS, at the double bonds of C6 C7 and C3 C8 positions. Using (3 Z )-6-sulfite-ligustilide and (3 E )-6-sulfite-ligustilide as the chemical markers, fourteen of sixteen batches of commercial RAS samples were inspected to be S-RAS, suggesting that the newly generated sulfur-containing compounds could be used as characteristic chemical markers for inspecting S-RAS among commercial RAS samples. In the present paper, we are concerned with the existence of Q 0 -rotating periodic solutions on a class of perturbed systems in R 2 n. This type of rotating periodic solutions has the form of X (t + T) = Q 0 X (t) , ∀ t ∈ R with T > 0 and Q 0 an orthogonal matrix. The systems under consideration are linear but completely degenerate, in another word, completely resonant. In general it is quite difficult to the situation. We establish a persistence result about Q 0 -rotating periodic solutions undergoing small perturbations. Research on exchange-spring magnets has focused on the microstructures of the materials. However, research has seldom been concerned with the effect of magnetic properties of soft magnetic phase on the energy product of an exchange-spring magnet. In this paper, a simple one-dimensional numerical simulation is used to investigate this effect in a Nd2Fe14B-based exchange-spring magnet. The results reveal that the larger the anisotropy constant, the stronger the exchange coupling, and the higher the magnetization of the soft magnetic phase, the larger the energy product of an exchange-spring magnet. Aims To examine the relationship between perioperative anxiety and postoperative pain in children and adolescents undergoing elective surgical procedures and the differences in children's perioperative anxiety and postoperative pain among subgroups of demographics. Background While anxiety and pain are regarded as two common problems experienced by children and adolescents perioperatively and the relationship between them has been reported in previous studies, there has been no review paper examining this phenomenon. Design A quantitative systematic review. Data sources Nine electronic databases were searched for studies published in English from the inception date of the databases to December 2010, using various combinations of search terms of 'adolescents', 'anxiety', 'child', 'pain', 'surgery' and 'correlation/relationship'. Review methods Using the Joanna Briggs Institute's comprehensive systematic review strategies, relevant studies were independently appraised and extracted by two reviewers using the standardized critical appraisal instruments and data extraction tool from Joanna Briggs Institute Meta Analysis of Statistics Assessment and Review Instrument. Results Ten studies were included in this review from 943 studies initially retrieved. Children and adolescents who had higher level of perioperative anxiety experienced a higher level of postoperative pain. Inconclusive evidence was found regarding differences of perioperative anxiety and postoperative pain between demographic subgroups of gender, age and past surgical experience. Conclusion Results of this review inform healthcare providers of the role perioperative anxiety plays on children's and adolescents' postoperative pain and indicate the need to use interventions to reduce perioperative anxiety and, therefore, optimize their postoperative pain management during the perioperative period. Objective: This study aimed to investigate the role of computed tomography angiography (CTA) and three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction of renal arteries in the evaluation of bleeding after mini- percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL).Methods: Thirty-one consecutive patients with continuous renal hemorrhage after mini-PCNL were enrolled from January 2015 to January 2022. Demographic and clinical data were retrospectively recorded and analyzed. All patients had received CTA evaluation and subsequently digital subtraction angiography (DSA) embolization to manage renal bleeding. CTA and 3D reconstruction of renal arteries were performed using the 320 multi-detector computed tomography technique and the images were evaluated by experienced radiologists. DSA embolization were performed by an interventional radiologist with more than 10 years of experiences.Results: CTA and 3D construction of renal arteries showed 28 cases of vascular lesions (28/31, 90.3%), including 15 cases of pseudoaneurysm (15/28, 53.6%), 9 cases of arteriovenous fistula (9/28, 32.1%), and 4 cases of suspicious bleeding spot (4/28, 14.3%). While DSA revealed 31 cases of vascular lesions (100%), including 15 cases of pseudoaneurysm (15/31, 48.4%), 10 cases of arteriovenous fistula (10/31, 32.3%), 6 cases of bleeding spot and (6/31, 19.4%). The serum creatinine level was elevated slightly before mini-PCNL and after DSA embolization (73.1±18.1 vs 92.1±33.6, P <.01). 15 patients (15/31, 48.4%) required blood transfusion, with mean blood transfusion volume of 700 ml ±660 ml (range, 400 ml-1800 ml). The bleeding was controlled without any further severe complications.Conclusion: CTA and 3D reconstruction of renal arteries were safe and effective in diagnosing renal arterial bleedings after mini-PCNL, with a sensitivity of 90.3% and a specificity of 100%. Purpose The purpose of this study was to examine the influencing factors of postoperative pain among children undergoing elective surgery. Design and Methods A survey was conducted in 2011 with a convenience sample of 66 children, 6 to 14 years old, in a tertiary hospital in Singapore. Results Children experienced moderate preoperative anxiety and postoperative pain. Gender, preoperative anxiety, and negative emotional behaviors were significant influencing factors for postoperative pain. Boys reported less postoperative pain than girls. Lemur tyrosine kinase 2 (LMTK2) is a novel membrane-anchored kinase reported to be involved in several normal and pathophysiological conditions, including endosomal membrane recycling, prostate cancer, and neurodegeneration. In this study, we have investigated the topology and orientation of LMTK2 within cellular membranes utilizing fluorescence protease protection. Appending the green fluorescent protein to either the amino or carboxyl terminus of LMTK2, we were able to determine which side of intracellular membrane these regions were located. Our results indicate that LMTK2 is an integral membrane protein in which both the amino and carboxyl termini are exposed to the cytoplasm. Cyanophages infecting marine Synechococcus strains are abundant in the world's oceans and are of considerable ecological significance by virtue of their hosts' role as prominent primary producers in the marine environment. In nature, cyanobacteria experience diel light–dark (LD) cycles, which may exert significant effects on the phage life cycle. An investigation into the role of light revealed that cyanophage S-PM2 adsorption to Synechococcus sp. WH7803 was a light-dependent process. Phage adsorption assays were carried out under illumination at different wavelengths and also in the presence of photosynthesis inhibitors. Furthermore, phage adsorption was also assayed to LD-entrained cells at different points in the circadian cycle. Cyanophage S-PM2 exhibited a considerably decreased adsorption rate under red light as compared with blue, green, yellow light or daylight. However, photosynthesis per se was not required for adsorption as inhibitors such as dichlorophenyldimethyl urea did not affect the process. Neither was S-PM2 adsorption influenced by the circadian rhythm of the host cells. The presence or absence of the photosynthetic reaction centre gene psbA in cyanophage genomes was not correlated with the light-dependent phage adsorption. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper presents an online feature selection algorithm for video object tracking. Using the object and background pixels from the previous frame as training samples, we model the feature selection problem as finding a good subset of features to better classify object from background in current frame. This paper aims to improve existing methods by taking correlation between features into consideration. We propose to use AdaBoost algorithm to iteratively select one feature which best compensates the previously selected features. Using the selected features, we then construct a compound likelihood image, which shows the ability to discriminate better than the original frame, as the input for the tracking process. We also propose to use ellipse fitting to eliminate mislabeled pixels from our training process. In addition, we propose an online feature validity test to monitor the selected features and only re-select features when the previously selected features become out-of-date. Aims The homeobox transcription factor, Iroquois protein 5 (Irx5), plays an essential role in the generation of region-selective expression of Kv4.2 gene across the left ventricular wall of rodent hearts. Here, we analyse molecular mechanisms underlying the Irx5-induced regulation of the rat Kv4.2 promoter. Methods and results The mRNA levels for Irx members in various heart regions were assessed by RT–PCR. A luciferase reporter gene with the rat Kv4.2 promoter was used to test the effects of Irx members on channel promoter activity. Irx3 and Irx5 mRNAs were differentially distributed across the left ventricular wall, whereas Irx4 message was equally abundant in various ventricular regions. Irx5, but not Irx3 or Irx4, increased Kv4.2 promoter activity in 10T1/2 fibroblasts, whereas the transcription factor decreased promoter activity in neonatal ventricular myocytes. These effects were mediated by the C-terminal portion of Irx5. Irx4 appeared to inhibit the Irx5-induced increase in channel promoter activity in 10T1/2 cells. The N-terminal region of Irx4 was necessary and sufficient for this inhibition. Furthermore, when endogenous Irx4 expression was suppressed with siRNA, Irx5 increased channel promoter activity in neonatal myocytes. Conclusion These results indicate that Irx5 possesses the ability to activate the Kv4.2 promoter. Abstract: The sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase (SERCA) is redox-regulated by posttranslational thiol modifications of cysteine-674 to regulate smooth muscle relaxation and migration. To detect oxidation of cysteine-674 that irreversibly prevents redox regulation, a polyclonal, sequence-specific antibody was developed toward a peptide containing cysteine-674 sulfonic acid. The antibody stained intact 110-kDa SERCA in pig cardiac SR that was oxidized in vitro by peroxynitrite in a sequence-specific manner, and histochemically stained atherosclerotic pig and rabbit aorta. Surprisingly, immunoblots of the pig aorta failed to stain intact 110-kDa SERCA protein, but rather, higher molecular mass aggregates and lower molecular mass bands. Of the latter bands at 70 and 60 kDa, the largest were observed in diabetic, hyperlipidemic pigs, and coincided with the most positive histochemical staining. The 70- and 60-kDa molecular mass bands also coincided with the majority of the protein detected by a monoclonal total anti-SERCA antibody, which detected the intact 110-kDa protein in normal pigs. Mass spectrometry identified SERCA in all the major bands detected by the sulfonic acid antibody as well as the oxidation of cysteine-674 in the 70-kDa band. These studies demonstrate a sequence-specific antibody that detects partial degradation products of SERCA, which represent the majority of the protein in some diabetic hypercholesterolemic pig aortae. In addition, the results suggest an association between irreversible oxidation of SERCA and its degradation, and that an important portion of the oxidized protein in tissue samples may be partially degraded. Abstract: Nitric oxide (NO) causes S-glutathiolation of the reactive cysteine-674 in the sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ ATPase (SERCA), thus increasing SERCA activity, and inhibiting Ca2+ influx and migration of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). Because increased VSMC migration contributes to accelerated neointimal growth and atherosclerosis in diabetes, the effect of culture of VSMC in high glucose (HG) was determined. Rat aortic VSMC were exposed to normal (5.5 mmol/L) or high (25 mmol/L) glucose for 3 days, and serum-induced cell migration during 6 h into a wounded cell monolayer was measured 5 min after adding the NO donor S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP) or 24 h after interleukin-1β (IL-1β) to express inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS). In normal glucose, SNAP or IL-1β significantly inhibited migration in cells infected with adenovirus to express GFP or SERCA wild type (WT), but not with a C674S SERCA mutant. After HG, NO failed to inhibit migration, nor did it decrease calcium-dependent association of calmodulin with calcineurin, indicating that NO failed to decrease intracellular calcium levels via SERCA. In contrast, overexpression of SERCA WT, but not the SERCA C674S mutant, preserved the ability for NO to inhibit migration despite exposing the cells to HG. The antioxidant, Tempol, or overexpression of superoxide dismutase also prevented the effects of HG. Further studies showed that both biotinylated-iodoacetamide and NO-induced biotinylated glutathione labeling of SERCA C674 were decreased by HG, and a sequence-specific sulfonic acid antibody detected oxidation of the C674 SERCA thiol. These results indicate that failure of NO to inhibit migration in VSMC exposed to HG is due to oxidation of the SERCA reactive cysteine-674. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Cysteine thiol modifications are increasingly recognized to occur under both physiological and pathophysiological conditions, making their accurate detection, identification, and quantification of growing importance. Among free cysteines, the bulk of modifications occurs on a subset of cysteines that are more reactive. These exist as thiolate anions at physiological pH because of their surrounding electrostatic environment. Reagents with iodoacetamide-active groups can be used to selectively label these reactive thiols with a high degree of selectivity. Thiol adducts can be detected by the failure to label with iodoacetamide or other reagents; restoration of labeling by specific reducing agents (e.g., ascorbate or glutaredoxin) can be used to detect reversible S-nitroso and S-glutathione adducts. These adducts also may be detected with radiolabels and antibodies. S-Glutathiolation in response to physiological stimuli may be detected in cells and tissues with glutathione ester labeled with biotin. Mass spectrometry can identify thiol modifications with precision, and with isotope-coded affinity tags, used to quantify modification of specific thiols. Combinations of these methods increase sensitivity and specificity, and enable quantification and precise identification of thiol modifications that occur under physiological and pathological conditions. Belle has observed surprisingly copious production of ψ(3770) in the B meson decay B → ψ(3770) K, whose rate is comparable to that of B → ψ(3686) K. We study this puzzling process in the QCD factorization approach with the effect of the S- D mixing considered. We find that the soft scattering effects in the spectator interactions play an essential role. With a proper parametrization for the higher-twist soft end-point singularities associated with kaon, and with the S- D mixing angle θ = - 12°, the calculated decay rates can be close to the data. A concept of mean last passage time at the saddle point is proposed in order to compute both the lifetime and the escape rate of a particle in a metastable potential, where the backstreaming across the saddle point is taken into account. It is shown that the mean oscillating time around the saddle point is the longest one among all the time scales at high temperatures and the inverse of the mean last passage time at the saddle point is more close to the steady escape rate.
