There are many types of natural plants in nature that contain a variety of effective and complex chemical components. These constituents can be categorized as organic acids, volatile oils, coumarins, steroids, glycosides, alkaloids, carbohydrates, phytochromes, etc., all of which play important roles in the fields of pharmaceuticals, food, nutraceuticals, and cosmetics. The study of extraction and chemical composition analysis of natural products is important for the discovery of these active ingredients and their precursors. Therefore, the aim of this article is to review the status of research on the extraction, separation and purification, and structural identification of natural products, to provide a reference for the study of natural products. Objective. The present study was designed to establish and evaluate an early prediction model of epilepsy after encephalitis in childhood based on electroencephalogram (ECG) and clinical features. Methods. 255 patients with encephalitis were randomly divided into training and verification sets and were divided into postencephalitic epilepsy (PE) and no postencephalitic epilepsy (no-PE) according to whether epilepsy occurred one year after discharge. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to screen the risk factors for PE. The identified risk factors were used to establish and verify a model. Results. This study included 255 patients with encephalitis, including 209 in the non-PE group and 46 in the PE group. Univariate and multiple logistic regression analysis showed that hemoglobin (OR = 0.968, 95% CI = 0.951–0.958), epilepsy frequency (OR = 0.968, 95% CI = 0.951–0.958), and ECG slow wave/fast wave frequency (S/F) in the occipital region were independent influencing factors for PE (P < 0.05).The prediction model is based on the above factors: −0.031 × hemoglobin −2.113 × epilepsy frequency + 7.836 × occipital region S/F + 1.595. In the training set and the validation set, the area under the ROC curve (AUC) of the model for the diagnosis of PE was 0.835 and 0.712, respectively. Conclusion. The peripheral blood hemoglobin, the number of epileptic seizures in the acute stage of encephalitis, and EEG slow wave/fast wave frequencies can be used as predictors of epilepsy after encephalitis. • We study the effects of an episode of extensive news coverage of cadmium contamination of rice in China in 2013. • The cadmium rice event reduced the incidence of joint or muscle pain (JMP) by 2% in Hunan Province. • Hunan residents switched away from unsafe drinking water sources such as surface water to deep groundwater, which contributed to the reduction in JMP incidence. • Hunan residents also reduced their consumption of rice in response to the event. • Strong evidence is in support of news and public information as supplemental approaches to formal environmental regulation. The paper studies the effects of news media coverage of the 2013 cadmium rice event in China on consumer health outcomes and avoidance behavior. A difference-in-differences analysis shows that the event caused a 2% decrease in the incidence of joint or muscle pain (JMP), a major health outcome of cadmium pollution, in high-cadmium-pollution regions relative to other regions. Individuals with higher income or with more access to traditional TV media or digital media experienced a greater level of JMP reduction. To defend against cadmium pollution, residents in cadmium-polluted regions switched their drinking water from unsafe sources such as surface water to the safe source of deep groundwater and significantly reduced their consumption of rice. Our findings demonstrate the importance of information provision as an informal approach to complement formal environmental regulation and the critical role of news media in environmental regulation and public health. Synthetic biology seeks to reprogram microbial cells for efficient production of value-added compounds from low-cost renewable substrates. A great challenge of chemicals biosynthesis is the competition between cell metabolism and target product synthesis for limited cellular resource. Dynamic regulation provides an effective strategy for fine-tuning metabolic flux to maximize chemicals production. In this work, we created a tunable growth phase-dependent autonomous bifunctional genetic switch (GABS) by coupling growth phase responsive promoters and degrons to dynamically redirect the carbon flux for metabolic state switching from cell growth mode to production mode, and achieved high-level GABA production from low-value glycerol in Corynebacterium glutamicum. A ribosome binding sites (RBS)-library-based pathway optimization strategy was firstly developed to reconstruct and optimize the glycerol utilization pathway in C. glutamicum , and the resulting strain CgGly2 displayed excellent glycerol utilization ability. Then, the initial GABA-producing strain was constructed by deleting the GABA degradation pathway and introducing an exogenous GABA synthetic pathway, which led to 5.26 g/L of GABA production from glycerol. In order to resolve the conflicts of carbon flux between cell growth and GABA production, we used the GABS to reconstruct the GABA synthetic metabolic network, in which the competitive modules of GABA biosynthesis, including the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle module and the arginine biosynthesis module, were dynamically down-regulated while the synthetic modules were dynamically up-regulated after sufficient biomass accumulation. Finally, the resulting strain G7-1 accumulated 45.6 g/L of GABA with a yield of 0.4 g/g glycerol, which was the highest titer of GABA ever reported from low-value glycerol. Therefore, these results provide a promising technology to dynamically balance the metabolic flux for the efficient production of other high value-added chemicals from a low-value substrate in C. glutamicum. • A RBS-library-based pathway optimization strategy was designed to reconstruct glycerol utilization pathway in C. glutamicum. • A tunable growth phase-dependent autonomous bifunctional switch was designed to dynamically orchestrate the carbon flux. • Growth-coupled regulation network was rebuilt using GABS to achieve a desirable metabolic state switching. • The engineered strain showed the highest titer and yield of GABA production from glycerol ever reported. Plasmonic metallic nanostructure with unique hot carrier-driven photocatalysis has recently emerged as a promising photocatalyst. Herein, we show that the plasmonic photocatalysis can be significantly promoted by supporting bimetallic Au@Ag nanoalloys (NAs) on graphene oxide (GO). The obtained Au3@Ag1/GO (molar ratio of Au to Ag∼3:1) with improved synergistic effects provides a remarkable higher visible-light (>400 nm) photocatalytic activity for a complete degradation (99.36%) of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) molecules within 70 min, while about 61.74% or 62.38% via monometallic Au/GO or Ag/GO. The optimum photocatalytic performance is attributed to the production of high yield hot carriers on NAs with enhanced localized surface plasmon resonance property and the pronounced photoinduced electron-transfer ability of modified GO support by overgrowth of NAs. [Display omitted] • Machine learning is utilized to train a global data set of major-minor elements of Cr-spinels. • Ti, Cr, and Al are critical elements for distinguishing Cr-spinel forming-environments. • The new model is successfully applied to reveal tectonic settings of magmatic sulfide deposits. This study uses the random forest machine learning algorithm to classify and predict Cr-spinel formation environments in mafic–ultramafic rocks. Cr-spinel is an early-crystallized oxide phase in these rocks and exhibits significant compositional variations that provide valuable insights into their formation environments. Traditionally, empirical diagrams have been used to classify the origins of Cr-spinel based on major and trace element compositions; however, overlap exists among spinel from different formation environments. To overcome this limitation, we develop a random forest model using a compiled dataset of Cr-spinel compositions from various tectonic settings, including small intrusions from continental collisional zones, layered intrusions and small intrusions from intra-continental plates (including large igneous provinces and intra-continental rifts), Alaskan-type complexes from oceanic subduction zones, and ophiolites from oceanic spreading centers. The model is trained, validated, and optimized using cross-validation and hyperparameter tuning. The results show high accuracy in predicting the Cr-spinel formation environments, as demonstrated by high precision, recall, and F1 scores. Feature importance analyses reveal that elements, such as Ti, Cr, and Al, play a more significant role in the prediction. Visualization techniques, i.e., the t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (TSNE) algorithm, are applied to reduce the dimensionality of the dataset and create decision boundaries for better interpretation. The model is validated using an independent Cr-spinel composition dataset obtained from an area with known geological settings, to confirm the model's reliability. The model is applied successfully to reveal the heterogeneous sources of the rifting-related Daxueshan magmatic Ni-Cu sulfide deposit in the Baoshan block in the eastern part of the Tethyan orogenic belt. The machine learning algorithm can accurately distinguish different Cr-spinel types using large and diverse datasets to provide valuable insights into geological formation conditions. This approach is a powerful tool for understanding Earth's geological processes, improving exploration models of magmatic sulfide deposit and reducing mineral exploration costs. Individuals attribute social status and personal image to owning and using a car ('car pride'), which may interact with their travel behavior in complex ways. This study explores the multi-directional relations among car pride, car ownership, and car use for a sample of 1236 adult commuters in New York City, NY and Houston, TX. Applying multivariate structural equation modeling and incorporating instrumental variables, we find evidence of a feedback loop among car pride, car ownership, and car use. Our results suggest that an individual with higher car pride is more likely to own a vehicle, and, enabled with this ownership, use it more frequently. And individuals who use their car more frequently are likely to feel more pride in owning and using their vehicle. This exploration of causal multi-directionality in transportation attitude-behavior relations has important implications for behavioral research, model development, and policy interventions. For researchers, potential bidirectionality must be anticipated from the outset of research design and accounted for appropriately in modeling to address underlying endogeneity. For policymakers, our results suggest that there are multiple intervention points within the reinforcing cycle of attitudes and car consumption. In this work, a single crystal of 4H–SiC was subjected to phosphorus irradiation at 100 keV with four different fluences at room temperature (RT) and post-irradiation annealing treatments at temperature range from 200 to 600 °C. The measured effective refractive index reflected that the disorder increased with the increasing fluences and partially recovered after our annealing treatments. Rutherford backscattering /channeling (RBS/C) experiments displayed that above the fluence of 5.0 × 1014 ions/cm2, severe damage caused in the surface of 4H-SiC crystal. The amorphous layer about 136 nm induced when the fluence is up to 1.0 × 1015 ions/cm2 according to the transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results. The amorphous phenomenon was explained by lattice swelling. We obtained the damage threshold value for the formation of amorphous in 4H–SiC crystal is about 0.3 dpa. Despite an increasingly large body of research that focuses on the potential demand for autonomous vehicles (AVs), risk preference is an understudied factor. Given that AV technology and how it will interact with the evolving mobility system are highly risky, this lack of research on risk preference is a critical gap in current understanding. By using a stated preference survey of 1142 individuals from Singapore, this study achieves three objectives. First, it develops one measure of psychometric risk preference and operationalizes prospect theory to create two economic risk preference parameters. Second, it examines how these psychometric and economic risk preferences are associated with socioeconomic variables. Third, it analyzes how risk preference influences the mode choice of AVs. The study finds that risk preference parameters are significantly associated with socioeconomic variables: the elderly, poor, females, and unemployed Singaporeans appear more risk-averse and tend to overestimate small probabilities of losses. Furthermore, all three risk preference parameters contribute to the prediction of AV adoption. These modeling results have policy implications at both the aggregate and disaggregate levels. At the aggregate level, people misperceive probabilities, are overall risk-averse, and hence under-consume AVs relative to the social optimum. At the disaggregate level, the elderly, poor, female, and unemployed are more risk-averse and thus are less likely to adopt AVs. These results suggest that it might be valuable for governments to implement policies to encourage technology adoption, particularly for disadvantaged social groups, although caution remains due to uncertainty in the long-term effects of AVs. Individualized risk preference parameters could also inform how to design regulations, safety standards, and liability allocations of AVs since many regulations are essentially mechanisms for risk allocation. One limitation of the paper is that risk preference is measured and modeled only as individual-specific but not alternative-specific variables. Given the rapid rise of remote work, there is an opportunity for new shared mobility services designed to meet the needs of passengers with multiple possible work locations. This paper develops a new optimization model to enable shared mobility systems to match drivers and passengers when passengers have flexible destinations. Constraints representing employer policies, such as mandatory co-location of colleagues and limited capacity of satellite offices are introduced in order to explore the impact of employer remote work policies on travel demand. A case study using historical demand data demonstrates that incorporating flexible work locations can increase ride-pooling participation by up to 6.7% and reduce vehicle-kilometers traveled by 4.9%. Outcomes are found to be significantly affected by employer policies. The car fulfills not only instrumental transportation functions, but also holds important symbolic and affective meaning for its owners and users. In particular, owning and using a car can be a symbol of an individual's social status or personal image ('car pride'). This paper introduces and validates a standard measure of car pride estimated from 12 survey statements using a cross-sectional sample of 1236 commuters in New York City and Houston metropolitan statistical areas. We find that car pride is higher in Houston than in New York City. We then empirically examine the bidirectional relation between car pride (attitude) and household car ownership (behavior) using structural equation modeling. To identify the bidirectional relationship we use an individual's general pride as the instrumental variable (IV) for that same individual's car pride; in the opposite direction, we use the average household vehicle ownership in the respondent's census block group as the IV for the respondent's household car ownership. We find that positive and statistically significant relations exist from car pride to car ownership, while the relation in the reverse direction is not statistically significant. On average and in both city subsamples, the relation from car pride to household car ownership (attitude-to-behavior) is much stronger than the reverse (behavior-to-attitude). In fact, in our models car pride is more predictive of car ownership than most individual and household socio-demographics included in traditional ownership forecasting models, including income. Empowered with a well-validated, standard measure for car pride and a robust approach for exploring reciprocal attitude-behavior relations in cross-sectional data, future research can extend the current understanding presented in this paper to explore car pride's relation with other travel behaviors, the dynamics of these attitude-behavior relations over time, and their implications for policies to promote sustainable travel behavior. This paper studies the impacts of renewable energy support policies on energy prices, fossil fuel supply and thus carbon emissions from fossil fuels. Such supports are climate friendly if the renewables are already competitive against fossil fuels. But if the renewables are not yet competitive, the climate change impacts are often ambiguous and are sensitive to capacity constraints of renewables production and to the fossil fuel market structure. If the renewables do not have capacity constraints, then the subsidies are subject to the Green Paradox under perfect competition, but might be climate friendly under monopoly. Supports for capacity constrained renewables under perfect competition lead to more current fossil fuel supply but delay fossil fuel exhaustion time, and these effects are reversed under monopoly. Our results highlight the importance of considering the long-term effects on fossil fuel supply as well as capacity constraints and market power in designing renewable energy policies and evaluating their carbon footprints. Lotteries and auctions are common ways of allocating public resources, but they have rarely been used simultaneously in urban transportation policies. This paper presents a unique policy experiment in Guangzhou, China, where lotteries and auctions are used in conjunction to allocate vehicle licenses. Guangzhou introduced vehicle license regulations to control the monthly quota of local automobile growth in 2012. To obtain a license, residents are required to choose between the lottery and auction method. Since the introduction of the regulations, there has been heated debates on the distributional effects of lotteries and auctions; however, the debates have not been grounded in empirical studies. We analyze the distributional effects of such mixed mode of resource allocation in a positive manner based on individual behavioral choices. We conducted a survey in January 2016 (n = 1000 people ∗ 12 months), and used mixed logit models to analyze how socio-economic status, including income and household automobile ownership, determined people’s choices among lottery, auction, and non-participation alternatives. We find that income increased participation, but did not influence non-car owners’ choices between lotteries and auctions, which contrasts with the common notion that lotteries benefit the poor. Additionally, the positive impact of car ownership on participation indicates a car-dependent trajectory for automobile growth. The significant socio-economic differentiators between lotteries and auctions were age, gender, and education. Proxies of mobility needs were insignificant overall. The program attributes had a much larger impact than all other variables—people were more likely to choose lotteries with higher winning rates and more participants and more likely to choose auctions with higher prices and more participants. We concluded that for those who participated, the choice between lotteries and auctions did not depend on their income or mobility needs but, rather, the probability of winning plates and the opportunity for speculation. This paper studies the impacts of Madrid-Seville High-Speed Rail (HSR) on land-cover change in the five HSR connected cities – Madrid, Ciudad Real, Puertollano, Cordoba, and Seville. The analysis period ranges from 1991 to 2006. The study finds that, in the Madrid-Seville region, the land development process concentrates mostly toward the two largest cities, Madrid and Seville, while other smaller HSR served cities are also benefited. The process of land development in each city varies largely. HSR contributes more to Ciudad Real and Cordoba than to Puertollano, with booming urban development in the former two cities. To study the accessibility impacts of HSR, binary discrete choice models are adopted. The results suggest that, the land development in smaller cities can be mainly explained by the improvement of regional accessibility and population growth. Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) is an economically destructive disease for global pig industry. Although its invasion mechanism is clear, the knowledge of pathogen and host interaction is less known. Here, we found that PPRSV infection led to induction of 2′, 5′-oligoadenylate synthetase gene 1(OAS1), an important interferon-stimulated gene. More importantly, ectopic overexpression of OAS1 significantly restricted the replication of PRRSV in 24 and 36 h post-infection in Marc-145 cells, and indirect immunofluorescence assay with antibody against PRRSV N protein displayed significantly lower frequency of fluorescence stained cells and reduced cytopathogenic effects of PRRSV on OAS1-transfected Marc-145 cells. Meanwhile, knockdown of endogenous OAS1 increased the PRRSV ORF7 mRNA level to 1.6 and 1.7 times of that in control in 24 and 36 h post-infection of PRRSV, and led to approximate 5.5 times increase of the frequency of fluorescence positive cells compared to negative control (p < 0.01). The obtained results strongly support a direct restriction function of OAS1 to PRRSV replication, which may contribute to the antiviral effect of the interferon system on PRRSV replication. The SMEN protocol, proposed by Wu and Ustaoglu in 2009, has been considered to be secure as the authors claimed, and numerous theories are proposed based on this protocol. This paper analyzes the SMEN protocol and finds that this protocol is not resistant to the session corruption attack and the key compromise impersonation attack. Then, we propose an improved protocol with tight security reduction. Our improved protocol not only avoids the above attacks but also embraces the same efficiency as the SMEN protocol in terms of exponentiation. This paper shows how policies aimed at insuring health risks and those intended to improve the environment are (and should be) deeply intertwined. In the model economy inspired by recent Chinese experience, pollution raises the likelihood of future, poor health prompting households to save more so as to self-insure against anticipated medical expenses. Increased household saving generates more capital while capital use by firms generates more pollution. Along the transition, such a “pollution-growth nexus” may be attractive from a capital-accumulation perspective; however, rising pollution, via the health channel, hurts welfare. Both insurance and environmental policies affect capital accumulation and can have additional dynamic benefits. The availability of private health insurance to top up pay-as-you-go coverage of medical bills along with a Pigouvian tax on emissions and a profit tax can replicate the first best. Objective. We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the predictive value of interim 18F-FDG PET/CT in patients with DLBCL treated with R-CHOP chemotherapy. Methods. We searched for articles published in PubMed, ScienceDirect, Wiley, Scopus, and Ovid database from inception to March 2014. Articles related to interim PET/CT in patients with DLBCL treated with R-CHOP chemotherapy were selected. PFS with or without OS was chosen as the endpoint to evaluate the prognostic significance of interim PET/CT. Results. Six studies with a total of 605 cases were included. The sensitivity of interim PET/CT ranged from 21.2% to 89.7%, and the pooled sensitivity was 52.4%. The specificity of interim PET/CT ranged from 37.4% to 90.7%, and the pooled specificity was 67.8%. The pooled positive likelihood ratio and negative likelihood ratio were 1.780 and 0.706, respectively. The explained AUC was 0.6978 and the Q* was 0.6519. Conclusions. The sensitivity and specificity of interim PET/CT in predicting the outcome of DLBCL patients treated with R-CHOP chemotherapy were not satisfactory (52.4% and 67.8%, resp.). To improve this, some more work should be done to unify the response criteria and some more research to assess the prognostic value of interim PET/CT with semiquantitative analysis. Developing a quantitative science of sustainability requires bridging mathematical concepts from fields contributing to sustainability science. The concept of substitutability is central to sustainability but is defined differently by different fields. Specifically, economics tends to define substitutability as a marginal concept while fields such as ecology tend to focus on limiting behaviors. We explain how to reconcile these different views. We develop a model where investments can be made in knowledge to increase the elasticity of substitution. We explore the set of sustainable and optimal trajectories for natural capital extraction and built and knowledge capital accumulation. Investments in substitutability through knowledge stock accumulation affect the value of natural capital. Results suggest that investing in the knowledge stock, which can enhance substitutability, is critical to desirable sustainable outcomes. This result is robust even when natural capital is not managed optimally. This leads us to conclude that investments in the knowledge stock are of first order importance for sustainability. Despite extensive efforts to understand the tectonic evolution of the Jiangnan Orogen in South China, the orogenic process and its mechanism remain a matter of dispute. Previous geodynamic studies have mostly focused on collisional orogeny, which is commonly invoked to explain the Jiangnan Orogen. However, it is difficult for such hypotheses to reconcile all the geological and geophysical data, especially the absence of ultrahigh‐pressure metamorphic rocks. Based on the magnetotelluric data, we present a group of resistivity models produced through the combination of two ‐dimensional and three‐dimensional inversions, revealing the geo‐electrical structures of Jiangnan and a typical collisional orogen. In our models, the resistive crust is separated into three parts by a prominent conductive layer with opposite dipping directions on both sides. A special thrust‐nappe system, which is different from that developed in a typical collisional process, is revealed in the Jiangnan Orogen. This structure suggests a process different from the simple collisional orogeny. To interpret our observations, an 'intra‐continental orogeny' is proposed to address the development of the Jiangnan Orogen in the Mesozoic. Furthermore, this 'reworked' process may contain at least two stages caused by the decoupling of the lithosphere, which is revealed by an extra conductive layer beneath Jiangnan. We evaluated the predictive value of [18F]fluoro-2-deoxy- d-glucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) for clinical outcome such as progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS) in patients with relapsed or refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) prior to and after autologous stem cell transplant (ASCT). FDG-PET/computed tomography (CT) was performed in 39 consecutive patients with relapsed/refractory DLBCL scheduled for ASCT. The median follow-up of surviving patients was 3 years (range 19-66 months). Both pre- and post-ASCT, FDG-PET findings were strongly correlated with PFS and OS ( p < 0.005). The 2-year PFS estimates for FDG-negative versus -positive patients were 84.8% vs. 36.8% (pre-) and 81.1% vs. 13.3% (post-). The 2-year OS estimates in these groups were 95.5% vs. 68.3% (pre-) and 92.7% vs. 57.1% (post-). Patients were classified into three groups according to FDG-PET results before and after ASCT. The median PFS was significantly lower in the +/+ group (13.0 months) as compared with the +/− group (31.0 months, p = 0.021) and the −/− group ( p = 0.000). The regression model showed that the predictive value of FDG-PET before ASCT owed its significance to a very high hazard ratio between patients with positive and negative imaging ( p < 0.01). Abstract: Increased automobile ownership and use in China over the last two decades has increased energy consumption, worsened air pollution, and exacerbated congestion. However, the countrywide growth in car ownership conceals great variation among cities. For example, Shanghai and Beijing each had about 2 million motor vehicles in 2004, but by 2010, Beijing had 4.8 million motor vehicles whereas Shanghai had only 3.1 million. Among the factors contributing to this divergence is Shanghai’s vehicle control policy, which uses monthly license auctions to limit the number of new cars. The policy appears to be effective: in addition to dampening growth in car ownership, it generates annual revenues up to 5 billion CNY (800 million USD). But, despite these apparent successes, the degree to which the public accepts this policy is unknown. This study surveys 524 employees at nine Shanghai companies to investigate the policy acceptance of Shanghai’s license auction by the working population, and the factors that contribute to that acceptance: Perceived policy effectiveness, affordability, equity concerns, and implementation. Respondents perceive the policy to be effective, but are moderately negative towards the policy nonetheless. However, they expect that others accept the policy more than they do. Respondents also hold consistently negative perceptions about the affordability of the license, the effects on equity, and the implementation process. Revenue usage is not seen as transparent, which is exacerbated by a perception that government vehicles enjoy advantages in obtaining a license, issues with the bidding process and technology, and difficulties in obtaining information about the auction policy. Nevertheless, respondents believe that license auctions and congestion charges are more effective and acceptable than parking charges and fuel taxes. To improve public acceptability of the policy, we make five recommendations: Transparency in revenue usage; transparency in government vehicle licensing and use, categorising licenses by vehicle type, implementation and technology improvements to increase bidding convenience, and policies that restrict vehicle usage in congested locations. This is a two-part mixed methods study that investigated motivations for watching videos on mobile phones while driving. We make three theoretical contributions in this paper. First, we specifically examine watching videos on mobile phones while driving, whereas previous studies examine calling, texting, monitoring messages, and using apps. Second, we specifically focus on waiting at intersections and driving in parking lots; parking lots have not been studied in previous studies. Third, we incorporate perception about the law into the Theory of Planned Behavior model as a predictor of intention. The quantitative survey yielded responses measuring each variable in our extended Theory of Planned Behavior model. We found that although people don't watch videos on their phones while driving as much as they text or converse, the rates of watching are disturbingly high (41% watch at intersections). The intention to watch while driving is a significant predictor of behavior, and attitude is a significant predictor of intention in both scenarios. Moral norms are significant predictors of intention in the parking lot scenario. Nearly half (48%) of drivers don't know their state laws regarding mobile phone use while driving. Neither knowledge about state law with respect to watching videos on mobile phones while driving nor the actual state law about using handheld devices while driving is a significant predictor of the intention to watch videos while driving. The qualitative survey yielded open-ended responses on drivers' salient beliefs about watching videos on mobile phones while driving. The size uniformity and spatial dispersion of nanoparticles (NPs) formed by ion implantation must be further improved due to the characteristics of the ion implantation method. Therefore, specific swift heavy ion irradiation and thermal annealing are combined in this work to regulate the size and spatial distributions of embedded Au NPs formed within LiTaO3 crystals. Experimental results show that small NPs migrate to deeper depths induced by 656 MeV Xe35+ ion irradiation. During thermal annealing, the growth of large Au NPs is limited due to the reductions in the number of small Au NPs, and the migrated Au NPs aggregate at deeper depths, resulting in a more uniform size distribution and an increased spatial distribution of Au NPs. We compare the short- and long-run effects of environmental reform and harmonization under autarky and free trade. When trade is driven by environmental distortions rather than real relative advantages, harmonization of environmental policies, even if achieved by lowering standards in one country, can improve short-run aggregate welfare. With the possibility of multiple steady states, harmonization can improve long-run welfare, especially when the environment is fragile. Further, long-run considerations favor upward harmonization even when it is equivalent to downward harmonization in the short run. For a country trapped in a low (or bad) steady state, environmental reform may not move it to a high (or good) steady state under autarky. However, under trade, harmonization of policies may enable this country to reach the high steady state. A dynamic model based on Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm is then proposed for the climate change dilemma, where the information exchange is restricted by a network. Metabolic engineering seeks to rewire the metabolic network of cells for the efficient production of value-added compounds from renewable substrates. However, it remains challenging to evaluate and identify strains with the desired phenotype from the vast rational or random mutagenesis library. One effective approach to resolve this bottleneck is to design an efficient high-throughput screening (HTS) method to rapidly detect and analyze target candidates. L-cysteine is an important sulfur-containing amino acid and has been widely used in agriculture, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food additive industries. However, HTS methods that enable monitoring of L-cysteine levels and screening of the enzyme variants and strains to confer superior L-cysteine biosynthesis remain unavailable, greatly limiting the development of efficient microbial cell factories for L-cysteine production at the industrial scale. Here, we took advantage of the L-cysteine-responsive transcriptional regulator CcdR to develop a genetically encoded biosensor for engineering and screening the L-cysteine overproducer. The in vivo L-cysteine-responsive assays and in vitro electrophoretic mobility shift assay (EMSA) and DNase I footprint analysis indicated that CcdR is a transcriptional activator that specifically interacts with L-cysteine and binds to its regulatory region to induce the expression of target genes. To improve the response performance of the L-cysteine biosensor, multilevel optimization strategies were performed, including regulator engineering by semi-rational design and systematic optimization of the genetic elements by modulating the promoter and RBS combination. As a result, the dynamic range and sensitivity of the biosensor were significantly improved. Using this the excellent L-cysteine biosensor, a HTS platform was established by coupling with fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) and was successfully applied to achieve direct evolution of the key enzyme in the L-cysteine biosynthetic pathway to increase its catalytic performance and to screen the high L-cysteine-producing strains from the random mutagenesis library. The use of anti-pollution facemasks (APFs) in defense against particulate matter (PM) pollution is subject to debate as air pollution and wildfire events intensify. Inward leakage due to imperfect fitting and the Peltzman effect of people spending more time outdoors when wearing masks have led to mixed evidence regarding the effectiveness of APFs, which in turn has contributed to conflicting public messages about APFs with potentially large public health costs. We conduct a large-scale randomized field study on individuals' daily outdoor time and mask wearing behaviors and the associated health outcomes during an entire winter heating season in a provincial capital city in Northeastern China. We find that APFs used in everyday life achieved an overall efficiency of 80% in reducing respiratory or cardiovascular disease related doctor visits. Mask wearing, due to its discomfort, reduced outdoor time. However, the added protection provided by masks against PM led respondents to spend more time outdoors on smog days, and this relative Peltzman effect wiped out about 12% of APFs' health benefits. Taken together, APFs' health benefits far exceed their financial costs. Background: Although the association between ambient temperature and mortality of respiratory diseases was numerously documented, the association between various ambient temperature levels and respiratory emergency department (ED) visits has not been well studied. A recent investigation of the association between respiratory ED visits and various levels of ambient temperature was conducted in Beijing, China. Methods: Daily meteorological data, air pollution data, and respiratory ED visits data from 2017 to 2018 were collected in Beijing. The relationship between ambient temperature and respiratory ED visits was explored using a distributed lagged nonlinear model (DLNM). Then we performed subgroup analysis based on age and gender. Finally, meta-analysis was utilized to aggregate the total influence of ambient temperature on respiratory ED visits across China. Results: The single-day lag risk for extreme cold peaked at a relative risk (RR) of 1.048 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.009, 1.088] at a lag of 21 days, with a long lag effect. As for the single-day lag risk for extreme hot, a short lag effect was shown at a lag of 7 days with an RR of 1.076 (95% CI: 1.038, 1.114). The cumulative lagged effects of both hot and cold effects peaked at lag 0–21 days, with a cumulative risk of the onset of 3.690 (95% CI: 2.133, 6.382) and 1.641 (95% CI: 1.284, 2.098), respectively, with stronger impact on the hot. Additionally, the elderly were more sensitive to ambient temperature. The males were more susceptible to hot weather than the females. A longer cold temperature lag effect was found in females. Compared with the meta-analysis, a pooled effect of ambient temperature was consistent in general. In the subgroup analysis, a significant difference was found by gender. Conclusions: Temperature level, age-specific, and gender-specific effects between ambient temperature and the number of ED visits provide information on early warning measures for the prevention and control of respiratory diseases. • The gas liquid microextraction technique was applied in quantitative analysis of plant semiochemicals. • Compared with common methods, the technique has distinct advantages in sample consumption and extraction time. • The quantitative performance of the method was evaluated in recovery and linearity by seven common semiochemicals. • The seven common semiochemicals in Thuja koraiensis Nakai were successfully quantified using the technique. A trapping-based gas liquid microextraction (GLME) method coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS) was utilized to qualitatively and quantitatively characterize semiochemicals in plants. The main GLME extraction efficiency associated parameters (heating temperature and extraction time) were optimized. The results obtained from GLME process were compared with those of steam distillation and ultrasonic extraction, and the recovery, peak number and reproducibility were evaluated by using Thuja koraiensis Nakai as a representative plant. Furthermore, the quantitative performances of the GLME in terms of sample amount, recoveries of spiked standards and correlation were systematically evaluated using standard addition method, which gave a good quantitative ability for all the compounds with squares of correlation coefficient (r2) of higher than 0.99. Finally, the contents of α-pinene, camphene, linalool, α-terpinenol, β-caryophyllene, α-caryophyllene, and totarol in Thuja koraiensis Nakai samples were quantified, and their concentrations (SD, n = 3) were; 0.65 (0.06), 0.62 (0.05), 4.12 (0.15), 0.99 (0.08), 1.11 (0.07), 0.63 (0.04), and 21.91 (0.25) μg g–1, respectively. In this work, a new an innovative micro liquid extraction technique named "gas purge micro solvent extraction" (GP-MSE) have been tested, hyphenated with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC–MS), to evaluate its capability to extract volatile fractions from vegetal samples respect to classical steam distillation extraction procedure, by comparing essential oil fingerprints from three different Atractylodes species. GP-MSE showed higher extraction capabilities and sensitivities (in particular for semi-volatile components), obtaining more structured essential oil fingerprints with high reliabilities (relative standard deviation of the peak areas between 0.34% and 5.83%), requiring at the same time smaller sample amounts and reduced extraction times. Essential oil profile data were also submitted to principal component analysis and included cosine angle in order to highlight differences among the Atractylodes species under investigation. GP-MSE can be considered an alternative, simple, fast, sensitive and environmentally friendly extraction method, with high extraction efficiencies and reproducibility toward both volatile and semi-volatile compounds. Hydrophilic trioctylammonium triflate ([TOA][OTf]), a protic organic ionic plastic crystal (POIPC), is studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) in a temperature range from −100°C to 120 °C. Below the melting temperature, ${T}_{m}~\approx ~18 ^{\circ} {\mathrm {C}}$ , [TOA][OTf] shows five solid phases, separated by sharp thermal transitions as detected by DSC. BDS spectra are analyzed using various strategies for data analysis. Phase changes are discernible in temperature-dependent permittivity and dielectric loss data; however, the derivatives ${{\partial \epsilon ^{\prime }}}/ {{\partial }\text {ln}{\omega }}$ and ${{\partial }\text {ln}{\varepsilon ^{\prime }}}/ {{\partial {T}}}$ appear to be much more sensitive to confirm all calorimetric phase transitions consistently. Fitting of ${{\partial \epsilon ^{\prime }}} /{{\partial }\text {ln}{\omega }}$ spectra with symmetric Cole–Cole functions reveals two conductivity relaxation processes, the relaxation time of which (${\tau }_{\text {fast}}$ and ${\tau }_{\mathrm {slow}}$) is separated by about two decades over the whole temperature range. The dc conductivity (${\sigma }_{\mathrm {dc}}$) is computed from ${\varepsilon ^{\prime \prime }}$ spectra for the solid phases I–IV and in the melt. Within all solid phases, ${\sigma }_{\text {dc}}$ shows Arrhenius behavior with typically decreasing activation energy toward higher temperature except for phase III. In the melt, ${\sigma }_{\text {dc}}$ obeys Vogel–Fulcher–Tammann (VFT) behavior as expected favoring a “vehicle” mechanism for ionic charge transport. Surprisingly, the ratio ${\tau }_{\text {fast}}/ {\tau }_{\text {slow}}$ shows an exceptional sensitivity to phase changes, either by stepwise changes or changes in its temperature dependence. From the presence of two distinct conductivity relaxation modes, we conclude that the crossover from subdiffusive to diffusive charge transport proceeds via two characteristic length scales, where the longer one likely relates to apolar aggregates of nanophase-separated cation tails as proposed by various authors. Contact angle measurements support this hypothesis. Finally, we discuss the temperature dependence of ${\sigma \tau {T}}$ and ${\sigma \tau }$ in the framework of the Debye–Stokes–Einstein (DSE) and Barton–Nakajima–Namikawa (BNN) relation. Here, ${\sigma }_{\text {dc}}{\tau }_{\text {slow}}{T}$ exclusively “sees” the transition III $\to $ II, which implies that this transition originates from a reorganization of the nanophase-separated apolar aggregates. Extensive studies have reported that interaction of α-synuclein amyloid species with neurons is a crucial mechanistic characteristic of Parkinson's disease (PD) and small molecules can downregulate the neurotoxic effects induced by protein aggregation. However, the exact mechanism(s) of these neuroprotective effects by small molecules remain widely unknown. In the present study, α-synuclein samples in the amyloidogenic condition were aged for 120 h with or without different concentrations of mitoquinone (MitoQ) as a quinone derivative compound and the amyloid characteristics and the relevant neurotoxicity were evaluated by Thioflavin T (ThT)/Nile red fluorescence, Congo red absorption, circular dichroism (CD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), cell viability, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), reactive oxygen species (ROS), reactive nitrogen species (RNS), malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and caspase-9/-3 activity assays. Results clearly showed the capacity of MitoQ on the inhibition of the formation of α-synuclein fibrillation products through modulation of the aggregation pathway by an effect on the kinetic parameters. Also, it was shown that α-synuclein samples aged for 120 h with MitoQ trigger less neurotoxic effects against SH-SY5Y cells than α-synuclein amyloid alone. With the rapid growth of the mobility-on-demand (MoD) market in recent years, ride-hailing companies have become an important element of the urban mobility system. There are two critical components in the operations of ride-hailing companies: driver–customer matching and vehicle rebalancing. In most previous literature, each component is considered separately, and performances of vehicle rebalancing models rely on the accuracy of future demand predictions. To better immunize rebalancing decisions against demand uncertainty, a novel approach, the matching-integrated vehicle rebalancing (MIVR) model, is proposed in this paper to incorporate driver–customer matching into vehicle rebalancing problems to produce better rebalancing strategies. The MIVR model treats the driver–customer matching component at an aggregate level and minimizes a generalized cost including the total vehicle miles traveled (VMT) and the number of unsatisfied requests. For further protection against uncertainty, robust optimization (RO) techniques are introduced to construct a robust version of the MIVR model. Problem-specific uncertainty sets are designed for the robust MIVR model. The proposed MIVR model is tested against two benchmark vehicle rebalancing models using real ride-hailing demand and travel time data from New York City (NYC). The MIVR model is shown to have better performances by reducing customer wait times compared to benchmark models under most scenarios. Facing rapid motorization, many Chinese municipalities are implementing policies that restrict car ownership or use. However, there is significant variation in terms of which cities adopt these policies and when. This research systematically investigates what factors prompt local governments in China to adopt these car restriction policies. We collect a database of car restriction policies as well as economic, demographic, land use, and transportation indicators for 287 Chinese municipalities from 2001 to 2014. We adopt a mixed methods approach that combines a qualitative investigation of stated objectives and legislative precedent within policy documents with a quantitative duration model of policy adoption. We find that the adoption of comprehensive car ownership and use restriction policies across Chinese cities primarily responds to local air pollution and secondarily to car ownership and congestion. Policy adoption additionally responds to local subway line constructions. Local economic power and population size do not effectively explain policy adoption. Idiosyncratic effects at provincial or city levels are important, although the underlying mechanisms by which these network effects manifest remain unclear. Broadly, our findings suggest that problem solving and network effects both contribute to the adoption of car restriction policies across China's cities and that the legal policy documents reliably illustrate the motivations of these policies. Researchers often treat data-driven and theory-driven models as two disparate or even conflicting methods in travel behavior analysis. However, the two methods are highly complementary because data-driven methods are more predictive but less interpretable and robust, while theory-driven methods are more interpretable and robust but less predictive. Using their complementary nature, this study designs a theory-based residual neural network (TB-ResNet) framework, which synergizes discrete choice models (DCMs) and deep neural networks (DNNs) based on their shared utility interpretation. The TB-ResNet framework is simple, as it uses a (δ , 1- δ) weighting to take advantage of DCMs' simplicity and DNNs' richness, and to prevent underfitting from the DCMs and overfitting from the DNNs. This framework is also flexible: three instances of TB-ResNets are designed based on multinomial logit model (MNL-ResNets), prospect theory (PT-ResNets), and hyperbolic discounting (HD-ResNets), which are tested on three data sets. Compared to pure DCMs, the TB-ResNets provide greater prediction accuracy and reveal a richer set of behavioral mechanisms owing to the utility function augmented by the DNN component in the TB-ResNets. Compared to pure DNNs, the TB-ResNets can modestly improve prediction and significantly improve interpretation and robustness, because the DCM component in the TB-ResNets stabilizes the utility functions and input gradients. Overall, this study demonstrates that it is both feasible and desirable to synergize DCMs and DNNs by combining their utility specifications under a TB-ResNet framework. One of the main features in mobility sharing applications is the exposure of personal data provided to the system. Transportation and location data can reveal personal habits, preferences, and behaviors, and riders could be keen not to share the exact location of their origin and/or destination. But what is the price of privacy in terms of decreased efficiency of a mobility sharing system? In this paper we address the privacy issues under this point of view, and show how location privacy-preserving techniques could affect the performance of mobility-sharing applications, in terms of both system efficiency and quality of service. To this extent, we first apply different data-masking techniques to anonymize geographical information, and then compare the performance of shareability network-based trip-matching algorithms for ride-sharing, applied to real data and to privacy-preserving data. The goal of the paper is to evaluate the performance of mobility-sharing, privacy-preserving systems, and to shed light on the trade-off between data privacy and its costs. The results show that the total traveled distance increase due to the introduction of data privacy could be bounded if users are willing to spend (or "pay") for more time in order to share a trip, meaning that data location privacy affects both efficiency and quality of service. Phytohormones are interrelated by synergistic or antagonistic crosstalk and play important roles in the regulation of plant growth and development. In order to understand the interaction between phytohormones in the plant physiological network, it is necessary to determine trace levels of multiple phytohormones simultaneously in a complex matrix. Here, we synthesized ionic liquids containing different functional groups and modified the surface of carbon fibers with them. Based on these carbon fibers-ionic liquid (CFs-IL) materials, a solid phase microextraction method was developed to enable the simultaneous extraction of phytohormones. The adsorption specificity of multiple phytohormones was studied by identifying the hydrophobic, electrostatic, and π-π interactions, as well as hydrogen bonds, which favor simultaneous extraction of the relevant acidic, alkaline and neutral phytohormones by improving compatibility. The proposed method, coupled with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, was applied to the simultaneous determination of 13 acidic, alkaline and neutral phytohormones in tomato. The limits of quantification were found to be in the range of 0.32–54.05 ng mL−1 and 4.6–185.8 pg mL−1, respectively, when measured by QQQ and Q-TOF. All of the relative recoveries were in the range of 94.40–113.37% with RSDs ≤15.36% (n = 3) for spiked tomato samples. • Examine how ICT use impacts an individual's travel behavior and ride-hailing use. • Study how ride-hailing use is associated with an individual's travel behavior. • Greater ICT use significantly predicts higher PMT and VMT. • ICT use is positively and substantively correlated with individual ride-hailing adoption. • Ride-hailing use of the passenger is slightly negatively correlated with PMT and VMT. Previous studies have explored the relationships between an individual's use of information and communication technology (ICT) and their travel. However, these studies often focus on one specific type of travel and have not considered new forms of mobility, such as ride-hailing, that are enabled by greater ICT penetration. This paper focuses on how ICT use impacts an individual's self-reported travel behavior—including total number of trips, personal miles traveled (PMT), and vehicle miles traveled (VMT) in a typical travel day—and ride-hailing use in the past month. Specifically, we investigate whether substitution or complementarity dominates the relationships between ICT use and an individual's net travel; how ICT impacts individual ride-hailing adoption and frequency of use; and how ride-hailing use is associated with an individual's overall travel behavior. Using data from the 2017 U.S. National Household Travel Survey (NHTS), we estimate a structural equation model that includes a robust set of individual, household, built environment, and travel characteristics, frequency of ICT use, and a hurdle model (two-part regression) of the adoption and frequency of ride-hailing use. Results reveal that greater ICT is not significantly related to the total number of trips that an individual takes, but it does significantly predict higher PMT and VMT. Greater ICT use is positively and substantively correlated with whether or not the individual has used ride-hailing in the past 30 days, but has no significant relationship with the frequency of ride-hailing use with this bounded outcome being controlled for. We further find that an individual's ride-hailing use has a small negative correlation with their PMT and VMT after controlling for other common factors. Our results indicate the importance of future research examining the mechanisms by which ICT use increases the distance individuals travel and the role that new ICT-enabled modes, such as ride-hailing, play in changing these mechanisms at both the individual and system levels. • Use behavioral knowledge to design a new DNN architecture with alternative-specific utility (ASU-DNN). • ASU-DNN provides a more regular substitution pattern of travel mode choices. • ASU-DNN improves both the predictive power and interpretability. • Behavioral knowledge can function as an effective domain-knowledge-based regularization. Whereas deep neural network (DNN) is increasingly applied to choice analysis, it is challenging to reconcile domain-specific behavioral knowledge with generic-purpose DNN, to improve DNN's interpretability and predictive power, and to identify effective regularization methods for specific tasks. To address these challenges, this study demonstrates the use of behavioral knowledge for designing a particular DNN architecture with alternative-specific utility functions (ASU-DNN) and thereby improving both the predictive power and interpretability. Unlike a fully connected DNN (F-DNN), which computes the utility value of an alternative k by using the attributes of all the alternatives, ASU-DNN computes it by using only k 's own attributes. Theoretically, ASU-DNN can substantially reduce the estimation error of F-DNN because of its lighter architecture and sparser connectivity, although the constraint of alternative-specific utility can cause ASU-DNN to exhibit a larger approximation error. Empirically, ASU-DNN has 2–3% higher prediction accuracy than F-DNN over the whole hyperparameter space in a private dataset collected in Singapore and a public dataset available in the R mlogit package. The alternative-specific connectivity is associated with the independence of irrelevant alternative (IIA) constraint, which as a domain-knowledge-based regularization method is more effective than the most popular generic-purpose explicit and implicit regularization methods and architectural hyperparameters. ASU-DNN provides a more regular substitution pattern of travel mode choices than F-DNN does, rendering ASU-DNN more interpretable. The comparison between ASU-DNN and F-DNN also aids in testing behavioral knowledge. Our results reveal that individuals are more likely to compute utility by using an alternative's own attributes, supporting the long-standing practice in choice modeling. Overall, this study demonstrates that behavioral knowledge can guide the architecture design of DNN, function as an effective domain-knowledge-based regularization method, and improve both the interpretability and predictive power of DNN in choice analysis. • Perceptions of AV safety were surveyed across 41,932 individuals in 51 countries. • Young, high-income, employed, and highly-educated males are the most optimistic about AV safety. • Western European countries are aware of AV technology, but are pessimistic about its safety. • Conversely, developing countries in Asia are the most optimistic about current and future AV safety. • AV safety optimism in risk-taking individuals and developing countries may reduce global disparity in road safety. Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are envisioned to reduce road fatalities by switching control of safety-critical tasks from humans to machines. Realizing safety benefits on the ground depends on technological advancement as well as the scale and rate of AV adoption, which are influenced by public perceptions. Employing multilevel structural equation modeling, this paper explores differences in perceptions of AV safety across 33,958 individuals in 51 countries. At the individual level, young males report higher perceptions of current AV safety and predict fewer years until AVs are safe enough for them to use. Since young males are more likely to undertake risky driving behavior, their positivity towards AV safety could lead to more rapid manifestations of safety benefits. Urban, fully employed individuals with higher incomes and education levels also report fewer years until AVs are safe to use. The multilevel model identifies country-level effects after controlling for individual characteristics. Developed countries with greater motorization rates and lower road death rates tend to have greater awareness of AVs but are more pessimistic about their present and future safety. Individuals in developing countries that face greater road safety challenges, particularly involving 2- and 3-wheeled vehicles, predict fewer years until AVs will be safe enough for them to use. Higher AV safety perception among the most risk-taking road users and in developing countries coincide with sociodemographic groups and geographic areas facing the greatest road safety challenges and most in need of improvement, highlighting a potential opportunity to reduce the global disparity in road safety. A great amount of new S‐wave data has been combined to image the mantle structure down to lower mantle depth near the southeastern margin of Eurasia and understand the tectonics in South China since the Mesozoic. Our results reveal a large‐scale structure beneath the South China Sea, with a prominent, broad low‐velocity feature of at least 1500‐km wide in and below the mantle transition zone (MTZ) and a pronounced low‐velocity feature of nearly 500‐km wide in the lowermost mantle. Together these features may represent the head‐and‐tail of an upwelling mantle plume that has interacted with and deformed by the subducting plates in the region. The Andaman–Sumatra plate is seen subducting steeply without stagnation in the MTZ over the large‐scale low‐velocity structure, suggesting that the upwelling mantle may have exerted significant influence on the overlying plate tectonics. Our results suggest a long‐term extensional regime near the southeastern margin of Eurasia, which may help to understand the formation of the large‐scale intra‐plate magmatism and mineralization with accumulation of huge amount of rare metal elements in South China during the Mesozoic, and the continental breakup, the southeastward extrusion of Indochina, and the opening of the South China Sea during the Cenozoic. • Establish the validity and reliability of a measure of rider-to-rider discriminatory attitude. • Examine associations between such attitude and four aspects of ridesharing behavior. • Survey Uber and Lyft users (N = 2041) in the United States in 2016 and 2018. • Such attitudes reduce satisfaction with the ridesharing service. • Such attitudes may persistently discourage sharing. Using online survey data from N = 2041 Uber and Lyft users in the United States collected in 2016 and 2018, this paper establishes the validity, reliability, and invariance of a measure of rider-to-rider race and social class discrimination. This measure is then incorporated into three structural models that investigate associations between rider-to-rider discriminatory attitudes and four aspects of ridesharing behavior. We find no significant relationship between rider-to-rider discriminatory attitudes and whether a TNC user has ever used a ridesharing service (such as uberPOOL or Lyft Line). However, among those who have used ridesharing services before, rider-to-rider discriminatory attitudes are strongly negatively predictive of an individual's level of satisfaction with the sharing option, and marginally negatively predictive of an individual's percentage of shared TNC trips. Furthermore, among those who have not yet used ridesharing services, rider-to-rider discriminatory attitudes are strongly negatively predictive of willingness to consider using uberPOOL or Lyft Line in the future. Together, these findings suggest that rider-to-rider discriminatory attitudes may discourage sustained and frequent use of ridesharing services among TNC users.
