English is the lingua franca in academia, business and international relations, and as such can act as gatekeeper to opportunities in the increasingly globalized world. The importance of English language competence is difficult to overstate. Consequently, English language education has been an important area of focus in education. In Japan, learning English as a second language has proven to be a difficult challenge for learners in spite of the extensive educational resources made available. Success in language learning has been linked to learner beliefs, a key affective factor, and since learner beliefs influence learner behaviors, they may impact language learning success. Therefore, the language learning beliefs of unsuccessful language learners and successful language learners, as determined by standardized testing, were investigated. Following this, the impact of student personal communication networks on the language learning beliefs of the successful language learners were examined in focused interviews. Participants shared beliefs, but also differed significantly in some beliefs according to their success as language learners in five groupings of beliefs: (1) foreign language aptitude; (2) the difficulty of language learning; (3) the nature of language learning; (4) learning and communication strategy; and (5) motivation. This study found that the unsuccessful learners blamed the lack of success to outside factors that were beyond their control, did not expect to succeed, relied on traditional ways of learning and were passive learners. Successful language learners used non-traditional learning styles, made opportunities to use the language, and took responsibility for their learning and expected to succeed. Two successful learners, Fumiko and Masahiro, had their learner beliefs influenced by their student personal networks through face-to-face communication, SNS software, and Facebook communication. These communications led to increased motivation, self-awareness in language learning, and provided more opportunities to use language. Beliefs can influence behaviors, and behaviors, in turn, can influence outcomes. The socially created knowledge in personal communication networks can lead to beliefs that encourage good learner behaviors, and student personal communication networks play an important role in helping students achieve language learning success. This study identifies a correlation between student beliefs and English language learning successes in Japanese non-English majors in Japan. Furthermore, it shows that for two of the successful language learners, student personalcommunication networks played an important role in influencing their beliefs.

Teachers and students hold their own language learning beliefs about English as a Foreign Language (EFL). In the classroom, students’ and teachers’ beliefs interact, which might result in either tension or opportunities for change. Considering that it might be difficult to evoke some of the participants’ beliefs, this study opted to analyze conceptual metaphors as an indirect way to elicit them. Metaphors are part of our thoughts and actions and, sometimes, they are the only way of organizing and expressing our experiences coherently (Lakoff & Johnson, 2003). This study analyzed, through metaphor analysis, how students’ beliefs about learning EFL relate to the teacher’s selection and use of language learning strategies (LLS) in the classroom. The study occurred at an English Institute in Montevideo, Uruguay, between October and November 2018. The methodology of this multiple case study was qualitative. The participants were three EFL teachers and four groups of students ranging from basic to advanced level. Students were asked to respond to the following prompt with a metaphor: “For me, learning English as a foreign language is (like)… because…”. Then they wrote a letter advising a future EFL student. Teachers answered a structured interview in which they provided a metaphor describing the work with their groups. The most heterogeneous group in terms of age was selected for a follow-up structured interview. Results indicate that metaphors not only shed light upon how students perceive their learning process, but also encourage reflection. The study also found that several factors influence teachers’ selection of language learning strategies, including the role of international exams. We can conclude that visible interactions that happen in class are like the tip of an iceberg - beliefs lie hidden from view. Es en el aula donde esas creencias se encuentran, pudiendo generar puntos de tensiones o habilitaciones de cambio. Debido a la dificultad para tener acceso a las creencias, se optó por investigarlas de una manera indirecta, a través de la metáfora conceptual. La metáfora está presente en nuestros pensamientos y acciones y, en muchos casos, pueden ser la única manera de organizar y expresar nuestras experiencias de forma coherente (Lakoff & Johnson, 2003). Esta investigación analizó, a partir de metáforas conceptuales, la relación entre las creencias de estudiantes sobre el aprendizaje de inglés como lengua extranjera y la posible influencia en la selección de las estrategias para el aprendizaje de lenguas por el docente. El estudio se realizó en un instituto de Montevideo, Uruguay, entre octubre y noviembre de 2018. La metodología de este estudio de casos fue cualitativa. Los participantes fueron tres docentes y cuatro grupos de estudiantes de nivel básico al avanzado. Las metáforas fueron recolectadas a través de la oración: “Según su opinión, aprender inglés como lengua extranjera es (como)… porque…”. Los estudiantes también escribieron una carta a un futuro estudiante. Los docentes tuvieron una entrevista estructurada donde crearon una metáfora sobre sus grupos. Se seleccionó el grupo más heterogéneo en cuanto a edad para entrevistar. Los resultados indican que las metáforas no sólo arrojan luz sobre cómo estudiantes perciben su proceso de aprendizaje, sino que también fomentan la reflexión. Se observó que existen diversos factores que influyen en la selección de las estrategias para el aprendizaje de lenguas, como el rol que implican los exámenes internacionales. Concluimos que las interacciones visibles que ocurren en clase son como la punta de un iceberg: las creencias están ocultas de la vista. Este estudo analisou, por meio de metáforas, a relação entre as crenças dos alunos sobre a aprendizagem de inglês como língua estrangeira e a possível influência na seleção de estratégias de aprendizagem de línguas pelo professor. O estudo ocorreu em um Instituto de Inglês em Montevidéu, Uruguai, entre outubro e novembro de 2018. A metodologia deste estudo de caso foi qualitativa. Os participantes foram três professores de EFL e quatro grupos de alunos do nível básico ao avançado. As metáforas foram coletadas por meio da frase: “Na sua opinião, aprender inglês como língua estrangeira é (como)… porque...”. Os alunos também escreveram uma carta para um futuro aluno. Os professores responderam a uma entrevista estruturada na qual forneceram uma metáfora descrevendo o trabalho com seus grupos. O grupo mais heterogêneo em termos de idade foi selecionado para uma entrevista estruturada. Os resultados indicam que as metáforas não apenas iluminam como os alunos percebem seu processo de aprendizagem, mas também estimulam a reflexão. O estudo também descobriu que vários fatores influenciam a seleção dos professores de estratégias de aprendizagem de línguas, incluindo o papel dos exames internacionais. Concluímos que as interações visíveis que acontecem em sala de aula são como a ponta de um iceberg - as crenças permanecem ocultas.

Language is an entity of common spoken, hand-operated, or written indications through which people− the individuals of community assert themselves by transmitting emotions and thoughts. Language, which bears human characteristics, is a complex structure that is closely related to such fields as psychology and sociology, and this relationship may be reflected on the language development of the individuals of a society. The language learning beliefs of learners have significant effects on their language skills. Besides, being aware of the language learning beliefs of students may reflect on language learning approaches and activities within this context. Regarding the mentioned point of view, the aim of this study is to investigate the language learning beliefs of Syrian refugees learning Turkish as a foreign language by means of the scale of language learning beliefs designed by Horwitz (1987). Syrian war victims living in Adana city participated in this study. SPSS 24.0, a Statistical Package for the Social Sciences, was utilized to collect the data of the study. The findings of the study represent that Syrian refugees learning Turkish as a foreign language have developed positive attitudes towards foreign language learning. Besides, the respondents suggested that Turkish is a foreign language of medium difficulty and can be learnt easily if given enough time, children can learn a language more easily compared to adults, some languages are easier to learn compared to other languages, and practicing the language is vital in foreign language learning.

Although the relationship between language proficiency and learner beliefs is generally viewed as weak, indirect, and distant, there are empirical findings which show that the relationship between syntactic complexity measures and language learning beliefs is statistically tangible. Since syntactic complexity is only one constituent of the linguistic complexity system, it seems plausible to question whether other constituents of the system are also in statistically measurable relationships with language learning beliefs. This research project explores the relationship between 25 lexical complexity measures (Lu 2012; 2014) and four subscales of language learning beliefs that are suggested for Horwitz’s (2013) Beliefs about Language Learning Inventory—BALLI 2.0 (Kovačević 2017). For three semesters (Fall 2014, Spring and Fall 2015), 152 freshman students at the International University of Sarajevo responded to BALLI 2.0 and wrote in-class exam essays which were converted into an electronic format. The results show 15 statistically significant correlation coefficients between 14 lexical complexity measures and three BALLI 2.0 subscales. Overall, it may be concluded that the relationship between lexical complexity measures and language learning beliefs is statistically detectable. The findings imply that the lexical complexity framework offers valuable opportunities for exploring how and to what extent particular individual differences manifest in foreign language production., Iako se odnos između jezičnog umijeća i vjerovanja o učenju općenito opisuje kao slab i neizravan, postoje empirijski dokazi da je veza između mjernih jedinica sintaktičke složenosti i vjerovanja o učenju jezika statistički opipljiva. Budući da je sintaktička složenost samo jedan od podsustava jezične složenosti, potrebno je ispitati jesu li i ostali podsustavi u statistički mjerljivom odnosu s takvim vjerovanjima. U ovoj se studiji istražuje veza između 25 indeksa leksičke složenosti (Lu 2012; 2014) i četiri podljestvice vjerovanja o učenju jezika izvedene iz instrumenta Vjerovanja o učenju jezika (The Beliefs about Language Learning Inventory—BALLI 2.0, Horwitz 2013; Kovačević 2017). Tijekom tri semestra (zimski semestar akademske godine 2014./2015., te ljetni i zimski semestar akademske godine 2015./2016.) prikupljen je uzorak eseja 152 studenta prve godine preddiplomskih programa na Međunarodnom sveučilištu u Sarajevu. Rezultati pokazuju 15 statistički značajnih koeficijenata korelacije između 14 indeksa leksičke složenosti i tri podljestvice BALLI 2.0. Na temelju rezultata može se zaključiti da je veza između indeksa leksičke složenosti i vjerovanja o učenju stranog jezika statistički mjerljiva. Na temelju rezultate analize može se izvesti zaključak da konstrukt leksičke složenosti predstavlja koristan okvir za proučavanje načina na koji, i opsega u kojemu se individualne razlike manifestiraju u uporabi stranog jezika.

Balıkesir Üniversitesi, Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü, Eğitim Bilimleri Ana Bilim Dalı, Bu araştırmanın amacı, İngilizce öğretmen adaylarının dil öğrenme inanışları ile dil öğrenme stratejilerini belirlemek ve bu değişkenlerin ilişkisini incelemektir. Ayrıca, bu amaç doğrultusunda cinsiyet, sınıf düzeyi, ikinci yabancı dil ve İngilizce eğitimi süresi değişkenlerinin İngilizce öğretmen adaylarının dil öğrenme inanışlarına ve dil öğrenme stratejilerine etkileri de araştırılmıştır. Araştırmada, nicel araştırma yöntemlerinden tarama modeli kullanılmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubu, 2015-2016 yılında Balıkesir Üniversitesi Necatibey Eğitim Fakültesi İngilizce Öğretmenliği Bölümünde öğrenim gören 190 öğretmen adayından oluşmuştur. Araştırma verileri, Horwitz’in (1988) “Dil Öğrenme İnanışları Ölçeği” (BALLI), Oxford’un (1990) “Dil Öğrenme Stratejileri Ölçeği” (SILL) ve araştırmacı tarafından geliştirilen “Kişisel Bilgiler Anketi” aracılığıyla toplanmıştır. Araştırma verileri SPSS 17.0 programı kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Her iki ölçeğe ait faktörlerin altında yer alan maddelerin frekansları, ortalamaları ve standart sapmaları hesaplanmıştır. Cinsiyet, sınıf düzeyi, ikinci yabancı dil ve İngilizce eğitimi süresi değişkenlerinin dil öğrenme inanışlarına ve dil öğrenme stratejilerine etkileri belirlenirken bağımsız gruplar t testi ve tek yönlü varyans analizi (ANOVA) yapılmıştır. Ayrıca, dil öğrenme inanışları ile dil öğrenme stratejilerinin ilişkisini incelemek için Pearson çarpım-moment korelasyon katsayısı hesaplanmıştır. Araştırmada kapsamında şu sonuçlara ulaşılmıştır: Öğretmen adaylarının dil öğrenme inanışlarına ait puanlarının yüksek olduğu gözlenmiştir. Bunun yanı sıra öğretmen adaylarının dil öğrenme stratejilerini ortalamanın üstünde kullandıkları belirlenmiştir. Dil öğrenme inanışları cinsiyete göre farklılık göstermiyorken, dil öğrenme stratejilerinin cinsiyete göre farklılaştığı sonucu elde edilmiştir. Dil öğrenme inanışlarının ve dil öğrenme stratejilerinin bazı faktörlerinde sınıf düzeyine göre farklılık olduğu tespit edilmiştir. İngilizce eğitimi süresinin dil öğrenme inanışlarını ve dil öğrenme stratejilerini etkilemediği görülmüştür. Dil öğrenme inanışlarının bazı faktörlerinde ikinci yabancı dile göre farklılık gözlenmiştir ancak dil öğrenme stratejileri ikinci yabancı dile göre farklılık göstermemiştir. Dil öğrenme inanışların dil öğrenme stratejileri ile ilişkisine bakıldığında ise BALLI ’nin ve SILL’ in faktörleri arasında zayıf ve çok zayıf ilişkiler olduğu gözlenmiştir., The purpose of the study was to identify language learning beliefs and language learning strategies of pre-service English teachers and to research the relationship between these two variables. Additionally, in line with this purpose, the effects of gender, grade level, second foreign language and the duration of English study variables on pre-service English teachers’ language learning beliefs and language learning strategies were studied. In this study, general survey model was used. The study group included 190 pre-service English teachers studying at Necatibey Faculty of Education at Balıkesir University in 2015-2016. In this study, the data was collected through “Beliefs About Language Learning Inventory” (BALLI) developed by Horwitz (1988), “Strategy Inventory for Language Learning” (SILL) developed by Oxford (1990) and an “Individual Background Questionnaire” developed by the researcher. The data was analyzed through SPSS 17.0 program. The frequencies, means and standart deviations of the items under BALLI and SILL factors have been calculated. Independent samples-test and ANOVA were used to determine the effects of gender, grade level, second foreign language and the duration of English study variables on language learning beliefs and language learning strategies of pre-service English teachers. Additionally, Pearson coefficient of contingency was calculated in order to identify the relationship between language learning beliefs and language learning strategies. The following results have been obtained in the study: The results of the study have revealed that pre-service English teachers have strong language learning beliefs. Additionally, they use language learning strategies above the average. While there is no difference in language learning beliefs in terms of gender, gender is effective on language learning strategies. The results have indicated that there is difference on some of the factors of language learning beliefs and language learning strategies according to the grade level. The duration of English language study has no effect on language learning beliefs and language learning strategies. While there is diffrence on some factors of language learning beliefs regarding second foreign language, there is no difference on language learning strategies regarding second foreign language. As to the relationship beween language learning beliefs and language learning strategies, there are weak or very weak correlations between BALLI and SILL factors.

Bu çalışma, İngilizce öğretmen adaylarının yabancı dil öğrenme inançları ve eleştirel düşünme becerilerini incleyerek öğretmen bilişini daha yakından araştırmayı amaçlamaktadır. Karma yöntemle tasarlanan bu çalışma, bahsi geçen inançlarla eleştirel düşünme becerileri arasındaki bir korelasyon olup olmadığı sorusuna cevap aramanın yanısıra, öğretmen adaylarının eleştirel düşünme becerileri kavramına ve bu kavramın İngilizce öğretimindeki uygulamalarına ait algılarını belirleme amacını da benimsemiştir. Çalışmanın diğer bir amacı da öğretmen adaylarının dil öğrenme inançlarıyla algıları arasında bir tutarlılık ve aynı adayların eleştirel düşünme algılarıyla puanları arasında bir ilişki olup olmadığını belirlemektir. Çalışmanın nicel verileri Dil Öğrenme İnançları Envanteri (BALLI) ve Watson Glaser Eleştirel Düşünme Gücü Ölçeği (WGCTA) ile Gazi Üniversitesi İngiliz Dili Eğitimi Lisans Programı'na kayıtlı 133 son sınıf öğretmen adayının katılımıyla toplanmıştır. Nitel veri ise aynı örneklemden seçilen 7 öğretmen adayının katılımıyla yarı yapılandırılmış görüşmelerle alınmıştır. Veri toplama sürecinin ardından, verilerin çözümlenmesi için betimsel ve çıkarsamalı istatistik analizi teknikleri ile birlikte içerik analizi yapılmıştır. Bulgular öğretmen adaylarının belli kategorilerde dil öğrenme inançlarına sahip olduğunu ve nitel verilerin nicel verileri doğruladığını göstermiştir. Eleştirel düşünme becerilerinde ise, öğretmen adaylarının en yükseği 100 üzerinden 79 olan WGCTA puanlarına dayanarak ortalama düzeyde eleştirel düşünebildikleri görülmüştür. Öğretmen adaylarının eleştirel düşünme kavramına dair algıları ile becerileri arasında doğrudan bir ilişki olduğu önerilmese bile, daha yüksek WGCTA puanına sahip öğretmen adaylarının eleştirel düşünme algılarını daha detaylandırabildikleri görülmüştür. Son olarak, söz konusu öğretmen adaylarının inançları ile eleştirel düşünme düzeyleri arasında bir korelasyon bulunamamakla birlikte, bu iki kavramın birbirleriyle yakın ilişkili olarak işlev gösterdiği tespit edilmiştir. This study set out to delve into teacher cognition by examining student teachers' beliefs about foreign language learning and critical thinking skills. Designed as a mixed methods research study, it combined quantitative and qualitative methods in search of a correlation between the aforementioned beliefs and critical thinking skills as well as student teachers' perceptions of the concept of critical thinking and its implications in English Language Teaching (ELT). The study also aimed to find out whether there is congruence between student teachers' reported beliefs and perceptions and whether a relationship exists between their perceptions of critical thinking and critical thinking scores. The data of the quantitative strand were collected with the Beliefs about Language Learning Inventory (BALLI) and the Watson Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (WGCTA) from 133 senior student teachers of English enrolled in the ELT Program at Gazi University, Ankara. The qualitative data were gathered with semi-structured interviews with 7 student teachers drawn from the same group of participants. Following the data collection, both descriptive and inferential statistical procedures along with content analysis were employed for the analysis of the data. The findings showed that student teachers held certain beliefs about learning a foreign language in terms of several categories. These quantitative findings were also supported by the interview data, which presented a closer look into the BALLI results. As for critical thinking skills, student teachers' WGCTA scores showed that they are moderate-level critical thinkers, with the maximum score being 79 out of 100 points. With respect to the relationship between their WGCTA scores and student teachers' perceptions of the concept itself, although a direct one cannot be suggested, it can be observed that the higher the WGCTA score was, the more concisely student teachers conceptualized CT. Finally, no correlation between student teachers' beliefs and critical thinking skills was found, but the data showed that these two constructs function very closely and affect each other to some extent although one of them is of a more affective nature and the other one is entirely cognitive. 247

The paper presents a qualitative approach to language learning beliefs while analysing case studies in detail to offer significant insight into these beliefs and language learning as well. A number of studies have shown that the belief system of language learners plays a decisive role in their success and failure in language learning (Bernat & Gvozdenko 2005; Horwitz 2008). The research presents the content analysis of interviews with bilingual participants. Interviews were carried out with migrant workers, other interviews with bilingual students in Romania, as well as online interviews with immigrant workers in the EU. The paper explores different beliefs learners hold regarding learning languages. By comparing migrant workers’ and students’ beliefs the complexity of positive and negative beliefs are presented. These may change due to previous and current language learning experiences, cultural-, social-, and educational background, personality traits, etc. The result of the qualitative analysis has shown that beliefs are linked to the particular language placed in a socialcultural dimension; the same beliefs may not be possible to be transferred to the next language being learnt, individual differences in beliefs regarding learning languages and their dynamic change in different language learning processes are investigated in details.

This paper reports part of a study that examines undergraduate English as second language (ESL) students’ English learning beliefs, language anxiety and learning outcome in a university of Pakistan. As a pilot of the study, this paper uses Horwitz’s Belief about Language Learning Inventory (BALLI) to collect data from 404 undergraduate ESL students, and explores the effects of gender on Pakistani undergraduate ESL students’ English language learning beliefs. The results indicate that males and females held similar beliefs in the factor of “motivations and expectations”, but significantly differed in the factor of “nature of language learning”. There were gender differences in the other three factors as well, but those were statistically insignificant. Possible explanations are provided for the differences. Based upon the findings, pedagogical implications are provided for improvement of teaching and learning of English in Pakistan.

Bu çalışmanın amacı, lise öğrencilerinin yabancı dile yönelik kalıplaşmış düşünceleri ile yabancı dil özyeterlik algıları arasındaki ilişkiyi çeşitli değişkenler açısından incelemektedir. Araştırmanın örneklemini, Anakara il merkezinde liselerde öğrenim gören 900 lise öğrencisi oluşturmaktadır. Çalışma ilişkisel tarama, modelinde desenlenmiş, nicel bir çalışmadır. Veri toplama araçları olarak `Yabancı Dile Yönelik Kalıplaşmış Düşünce Ölçeği` (Ünal, 2015) ve `İngilizce Özyeterlik Ölçeği` (Yanar, 2008) kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen verilerin analizinde betimsel istatistikler (frekans, yüzde, ortalama), t testi, ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis, Mann Whitney U testi ve basit ve kısmi korelasyon testleri kullanılmıştır. Yabancı dile yönelik kalıplaşmış düşünce ölçeğine ait güvenirlik değeri ,87 ve yabancı dil öz yeterliğe ilişkin güvenirlik değeri ,97 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Araştırma bulgularına göre, lise öğrencilerinin yabancı dile yönelik kalıplaşmış düşüncelerinde cinsiyet, lise türü, hazırlık okuyup-okumama, sınıf düzeyi, anne eğitim durumu, baba eğitim durumu, İngilizce öğrenme amaçları değişkenleri açısından anlamlı farklılık vardır. Ayrıca, öğrencilerin yabancı dil özyeterlik algılarında lise türleri, sınıf düzeyi, anne eğitim durumu, baba eğitim durumu, anne mesleği, aile gelir düzeyi, ders çalışma saatleri ve İngilizce öğrenme amaçları değişkenleri açısından anlamlı farklılık tespit edilmiştir. Buna karşılık, öğrencilerin yabancı dile yönelik kalıplaşmış düşünceleri ile yabancı dil özyeterlik algıları arasında anlamlı bir ilişki bulunmamıştır. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between stereotyped thoughts about foreign language and foreign self-efficacy perception of high school students in terms of various variables. 900 students from different high schools in Ankara, Turkey attended this study as a sample group. Data were collected through `Scale for Stereotyped Thoughts about Foreign Language` (Ünal, 2015) and `English Self-efficacy Perception` (Yanar, 2008). Descriptive statics (frequency, percentage, mean), t- Test, one way ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis, Mann Whitney U, Pearson correlation were used to analyze the data. This study was designed with comparative correlational survey design. The realibility coefficients of the stereotyped thoughts about foreign language scale is ,87 and The realibility coefficients of the foreign language self-efficacy scale is calculated as,97. According to the findings, there is no significantly difference between stereotyped thoughts about foreign language and foreign language self-efficacy of the students. There are statistically significant difference in their stereotyped thoughts about foreign language in terms of sex, high school types, maternal education status, father education status, the aim of learning English variables. There are statistically significant difference in their foreign language self-efficacy percetions in terms of high school types, grades in high school, maternal education status, father education status, the occupation of mother, income level of the family, study hours, the aim of learning English variables. However, There is no significant correlation between stereotyped thoughts about foreign language and foreign language self efficacy perceptions of students.

Bu faktörlerden üçü olan tutum, önyargı ve kalıpyargı bireyi ruhsal ve zihinsel olarak etkileyerek öğrenmeyi zorlaştıran faktörler arasında yer almaktadır. Önyargı ve kalıpyargılardan arınma, öteki kültür karşısında olumlu düşünce geliştirdiği ve öğrenilen yabancı dile karşı ilgi ve sempati uyandırdığı için, önyargı ve kalıpyargıların derslerde ele alınması günümüzde yabancı dil derslerinin iyileştirilmesi ve geliştirmesinde önemli bir işleve sahiptir. Bu çalışma ile Türk lise öğrencilerinin Almanlara ve Almancaya ilişkin önyargı ve kalıpyargılarının olup olmadığı, tutumlarının nasıl olduğu ve bu tutumların önyargı ve kalıpyargıları nasıl etkilediği incelenmiştir. Bu bağlamda, öğrencilerin Almanlara ve Almancaya ilişkin önyargı, kalıpyargı ve tutumlarını etkileyebileceği düşünülen farklı değişkenler de ele alınmıştır. Araştırmanın örneklemini 2015-2016 eğitim-öğretim yılında Muğla ili Menteşe ilçesinde bulunan 75.Yıl Fen Lisesi, Menteşe Sosyal Bilimler Liesei, Muğla Anadolu Lisesi, Muğla Gazi Anadolu Lisesi, Turgutreis Anadolu Lisesi ve Bayır Anadolu Lisesinde Almancayı ikinci yabancı dil olarak öğrenen öğrenciler oluşturmaktadır. Bu kapsamda, 9., 10., 11. ve 12. sınıfta öğrenim gören toplam 1065 lise öğrencisinden veri elde edilmiştir. Karma modelde desenlenen araştırmanın verileri nicel ve nitel veri toplama teknikleri ile elde edilmiştir. Nitel veriler araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formu ile nicel veriler ise Kazaoğulu (2013) tarafından geliştirilen ve araştırmacılar tarafından Almanca dersine göre uyarlanan `İngilizce Dersine Yönelik Tutum` ölçeğiyle toplanmıştır. Nitel verilerin analizinde içerik analizi, nicel verilerin analizinde ise, betimsel istatistikler, normallik testleri, T-Testi, Mann Whitney U testi, ve tek yönlü varyans analizi (ANOVA) ve kullanılmıştır. Araştırmada lise öğrencilerinin Almanca dersine yönelik tutumlarının olumsuz, Almanca öğrenmeye yönelik tutumlarının ise olumlu olduğu bulunmuştur. Araştırmada ayrıca, lise öğrencilerinin Almancaya yönelik tutumlarının; cinsiyet, öğrenim görülen lise, sınıf, ailede Almanca konuşan birey, Almanlar hakkında yeterli bilgiye sahip olma, Almanya'da yaşamak isteme, Almanca derslerinde yeterince ülke bilgisine yer verilmesi, Almanların çalışkan olup olmamasına ilişkin düşünceler, ile Almanlar ve Almaya hakkında edinilen bilginin kaynağı değişkenleri açısından anlamlı farklılık gösterdiği belirlenmiştir. Öğrencilerin tutumlarının yalnızca Almanya'da bulunma değişkeni açısından farklılaşmadığı sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Öğrencilerin Almanca dersine yönelik bu olumsuz tutumları Almanca öğretmenlerinden, derste kullanılan öğrenme-öğretme yöntem ve tekniklerinden ve ders kitaplarından kaynaklanıyor olabilir. Buradan hareketle, öğrencilerin Almanca dersine yönelik motivasyon ve ilgilerinin düşük olduğu söylenebilir. Araştırmada ulaşılan diğer bir sonuç ise, lise öğrencilerinin Alman diline yönelik önyargı ve kalıpyargılarının büyük ölçüde olumsuz; Almanlara ve Almanya'ya ilişkin önyargı ve kalıpyargılarının çoğunlukla olumlu olduğudur. Bununla birlikte, az sayıda da olsa bazı lise öğrencilerinin Almanlara ve Almanya'ya ilişkin olumsuz önyargı ve kalıpyargılarının da olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Araştırmadan elde edilen sonuçlar Almanca derslerinde yeterince ülke bilgisine yer verilmediğini doğrulamaktadır. Almanca derslerini daha etkili hale getirebilmek için Almanca derslerine yönelik olumsuz tutum, önyargı ve kalıpyargıların ortadan kaldırılması, hoşgörü, kültürlerarası yeti ve empatinin teşvik edilmesi gerekmektedir.Anahtar kelimeler: Tutum, önyargı, kalıpyargı, Alman dili, Almanlar. Im letzten Viertel des 20. Jahrhunderts rückte der lernerzentrierte Unterricht in den Vordergrund und die Untersuchungen der Faktoren, die den Lernprozess und das Lernen beeinflussen, gewannen an Bedeutung. Einstellungen, Vorurteile und Stereotype sind drei dieser Faktoren, die, die Lernenden mental und seelisch belasten und dadurch auch das Lernen erschweren. Außerdem wird immer wieder festgestellt, dass die Vorurteile bei den Problemen und Konflikten zwischen den Völkern eine signifikante Rolle spielen. Da die Beseitigung der Vorurteile und Stereotype positive Einstellungen gegenüber der anderen Kultur entwickelt und dazu noch Interesse und Sympathie gegenüber der erlernenden Fremdsprache erweckt, nimmt die Bearbeitung der Vorurteile und Stereotype im Fremdsprachenunterricht heute für die Verbesserung und Weiterentwicklung des Fremdsprachenunterrichts einen hohen Stellenwert ein. In dieser Masterarbeit wurde erforscht, welche Einstellungen türkische Gymnasiasten gegenüber Deutschen und deutscher Sprache haben, ob sie überhaupt Vorurteile und Stereotype gegenüber ihnen haben und inwiefern ihre Einstellungen von Vorurteilen und Stereotypen beeinflusst sind? In diesem Zusammenhang wurden die verschiedenen Variablen geforscht, die die Einstellungen, Vorurteile und Stereotype der Gymnasiasten gegenüber Deutschen und deutscher Sprache beeinflussen können. Die Teilnehmer dieser Studie sind die Gymnasialschüler und -schülerinnen der Muğla 75.Yıl Fen Lisesi, Menteşe Sosyal Bilimler Lisesi, Muğla Anadolu Lisesi, Muğla Gazi Anadolu Lisesi, Turgutreis Anadolu Lisesi und Bayır Anadolu Lisesi Gymnasien, die im 2. Halbjahr des Schuljahrs 2015/2016 Deutsch als zweite Fremdsprache lernten. Die Daten der Studie wurden insgesamt von 1065 Gymnasialschüler und -schülerinnen nur vom Zentrum der Großstadt Muğla von den neunten, zehnten, elften und zwölften Klassen erhoben. Um die Daten zu sammeln, wurde im gemischten Forschungsdesign ein Mixed-Methode-Design entwickelt. Die qualitativen Daten wurden anhand eines semistrukturierten Interviews, die von den Forscherinnen entwickelt wurden und die quantitativen Daten wurden durch „Befragung der Einstellung gegenüber Englischunterricht`, die von Kazazoğlu (2013) entwickelt und auf Deutsch übertragen wurde, gesammelt. Bei der Analyse der qualitativen Daten wurden die Inhaltsanalyse und bei der Auswertung der quantitativen Daten wurden beschreibende Statistik, Normalitätstest, T-Test, Einweg Varianzanalyse ANOVA und Mann Whitney U verwendet. Als Ergebnis der Untersuchung stellte sich heraus, dass die Einstellungen der Gymnasiasten gegenüber dem Deutschunterricht negativ sind, aber gegenüber Deutschlernen positiv sind. Nach den Ergebnissen der Studie unterscheiden sich die Einstellungen der Gymnasiasten bei den Variablen „Geschlecht`, „besuchtes Gymnasium`, „Klasse`, „eine Bekannte haben, der Deutsch sprechen kann`, „genügende Kenntnisse über die Deutschen`, „Der Wunsch in Deutschland zu leben`, „Ausreichendes Erlernen der Landeskunde im Unterricht`, „Meinung zu Thema Fleiß der Deutschen` und „die Quelle der Kenntnisse über Deutschland und Deutsche`. Die Einstellungen der Gymnasiasten unterschieden sich nicht bei der Variable „Aufenthalt in Deutschland`. Des Weiteren wurde festgestellt, dass die Vorurteile und Stereotype der türkischen Gymnasiasten gegenüber der deutschen Sprache negativ sind, aber gegenüber Deutschen und Deutschland meistens positiv. In einigen Bereichen finden die Gymnasiasten die Deutschen besser als die Türken, in anderen wiederum umgekehrt. Generell haben sie negative Vorurteile und Stereotype gegenüber der deutschen Sprache, aber nicht gegenüber den Deutschen. Die meisten negativen Einstellungen der Gymnasiasten gegenüber dem Deutschunterricht können sich aus dem Erfolg der Deutschlehrer, aus von ihnen benutzten Lehrmethoden oder aus dem Erfolg der im Unterricht benutzten Lehrbüchern resultieren. Die tauchen öfters als die wichtigsten Faktoren auf, die die Motivationen und Interessen der Schüler am Deutschunterricht beeinflussen. Was ihre Kenntnisse über die deutsche Landeskunde sowie ihre Wissenschaftler, ihre Kultur, Geschichte usw. anbelangt sind, befinden sie sich nicht auf dem gewünschten Niveau. Im Bereich der aktuellen und medienbasierten Kenntnisse hingegen liefern sie bessere Ergebnisse. Diese Studie ergibt, dass sich die Gymnasiasten im Deutsch als Fremdsprachenunterricht mit landeskundlich-interkulturellen Themen nicht ausreichend beschäftigen. Um einen effektiven Erfolg im Deutschunterricht erreichen zu können, sollte man negative Einstellungen über den Deutschunterricht, Vorurteile und Stereotype gegenüber den Deutschen beseitigen, bzw. interkulturelle Handlungskompetenz fördern, Toleranz, Empathie etc. gegenüber der anderen Kulturen entwickeln.Schlüsselwörter: Einstellung, Vorurteile, Stereotype, Deutschunterricht, deutsche Sprache, Deutsche. 197

Treball de fi de grau en Traducció i Interpretació English is nowadays one of the most widely spoken languages around the world. Therefore, there are many contexts in which it is learnt, such as formal instruction and immersion. It appeared interesting to examine different learning contexts in order to compare how the students of each of them tackled the task of learning the language and what their thoughts were about language learning. Thus, this paper explores strategy use and beliefs about motivation, difficulty and aptitude of students from three different contexts (EFL, language specialists and immersion at school). Fifty-two people responded to a questionnaire based on SILL and BALLI posted online. However, this was a low number taking into account that three groups were to be analyzed. The results showed that the immersion and specialist groups were more motivated and the EFL learners found learning the language to be the hardest. However, cognitive strategies were the most employed by all groups. The EFL learners showed a preference for memory strategies, the immersion category for interactive strategies and the language specialists for metacognitive strategies. Thus, one can argue that context affects beliefs and strategies and promotes different relationships with the language.

To maximize learning, it is crucially important to consider both the beliefs of language learners about learning a language and the factors affecting these beliefs. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore Iranian learners’ beliefs about learning English and find out whether there is a positive correlation between EFL learners’ language learning beliefs and their language proficiency level. The data were collected from four public schools in Tehran, Robatkarim District in Iran, using the Beliefs about Language Learning Inventory (BALLI), and the Key English Test (KET).Data were analysed through correlation analyses. The results revealed that participants reportedstrong beliefs in the categories of “motivation and expectation” and “foreign language aptitude.” The findings also revealed that there was a positive correlation between language proficiency and beliefs about language learning.

The purpose of the current study is to explore the effects of pre-service teachers’ language learning beliefs on their practice teaching. Two randomly chosen pre-service teachers were recruited in the study (one male, one female). This research mainly adopted a qualitative approach using a structured interview, philosophy statements, field-notes during observations and the reflective journals of the participants. To explore their language learning beliefs and to determine the categories participants’ interview transcriptions were open coded. Five main categories of language learning beliefs were identified in the end of the analysis; (1) ideal English learner, (2) ideal English teacher, (3) ideal English classroom, (4) difficulties in language learning process, (5) strategies of learners to overcome difficulties. The findings of the observation checklist and reflection papers written by the participants revealed some significant effects of the language learning beliefs of pre-service teachers on their practice teaching. Briefly, the results of the study revealed that both participants’ teachings were greatly affected by their foreign language learning beliefs. However, it was also seen that some external factors created some divergences between the beliefs and practice teaching.
