As childhood death is considered nonnormative and outside of the life course, children may be memorialized differently than adults who have had an opportunity for fuller lives. As obituaries are cultural artifacts used to provide public documentation of personal legacies, this study sought to determine how children obituaries differ from traditional obituaries of those who have lived full lives. I content analyzed 63 children's obituaries to determine how they differ in intention and use of linguistic devices from what we know about traditional obituaries. Several key themes emerged in the obituary content – passions, religion and faith, children's role as siblings, their effect on those around them, and messages written directly to the deceased children. These children's obituaries read as tributes to the children's lives, rather than as resumes as traditional obituaries often do. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

YOUNG adults , *MEDIA literacy , *INTERNET security , *DIGITAL literacy , *CORE competencies - Abstract
This article presents the results of a lexicometric and content study carried out in the curricula of different subjects of secondary education whose objective has been to demonstrate the regulatory changes in digital competence. Above all, we are interested in Internet security aspects that also include privacy. For this, the regional decrees of secondary education that derive from Organic Law 2/2006 of May 3 (LOE), and Organic Law 2/2013 of December 9 (LOMCE) have been analyzed, from three areas of media literacy: digital training, processing and treatment of information and critical thinking. The most recent Royal Decree 217/2022 of March 29 of the new Organic Law 3/2020 of Modification of the LOE (LOMLOE) has also been assessed. Finally, contrasting the results with the literature consulted, we come to understand the importance of digital security and privacy in secondary education from three areas of media and information literacy: instrumental training, understanding and analysis of digital content, and its consumption and production. We conclude on its importance in the training of young people, and we provide some operational ideas for the curricular approach from the social sciences. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

SOCIAL institutions , *UNIVERSITIES & colleges - Abstract
The university models that are conceived today produce effects directly on the conformation of higher education curricula, which generates tension in the ways in which they are related: they are integrated, excluded, approached, distanced, according to the different historical configurations in which they are inserted. From this tension result: i) what is meant by university, which responds to the conception of modern university, translated by the inseparability between research, teaching and extension, and ii) what is meant by higher education, which prepares to serve the market and which, can be affiliated with a marketing concept. In this sense, this article, resulting from bibliographical research, aims to observe how a certain conception of university is related to a conception of curriculum and the effects that can be produced. Therefore, the proximity in the ways in which they are constituted showed different effects for the construction of a modern conception of university and for the emergence of a university that provides services (CHAUÍ, 2001). The service provider university deconstructs the university as a social institution with teaching, research and extension inseparable. In the approximation between university models and curriculum theories, a model of public university was evidenced that is largely restricted to its traditional function of training polyvalent professionals for the labor market. This function of the public university is in correlation with the concept of a service provider university. On the other hand, a possible model of the university as a social institution was evidenced, which would be related to the post-critical theories of curriculum, an emancipating university. EARLY childhood education , *CURRICULUM planning , *EDUCATION research , *CRITICAL theory , *CARTOGRAPHY - Abstract
This article presents a literature systematic review on the curriculum in Early Childhood Education, based on surveys carried out in Capes Periodicals Portal and in Annals of National Meetings of the National Association for Research in Education (ANPEd). The purpose is elaborating an overview of the academic production on this matter in the last five years (2017-2022) to clarify study problems. Exhaustive texts readings were carried out, accompanied by a form with the following indexes: (i) research problems; (ii) curriculum design; (iii) theoretical framework; and (iv) methodology. The results indicate that: research problems refer to pedagogical policies and practices; theoretical references outside pedagogy are used, such as philosophy, sociology and politics; and methodologies such as ethnography and cartography are also used. We have concluded that, in comparison with revisions results from previous periods, the interest in the Early Childhood's curriculum grows, and in this context, critical and post-critical theories of curriculum can help deepening in the matter. We propose a CMOS synapse circuit using a time-domain digital-to-analog converter (TDAC) for realizing spiking neural network hardware with on-chip learning. A TDAC has the advantages that (i) it can reproduce a post-synaptic potential and (ii) its number of analog components for DA conversion, such as current sources and capacitors, is independent of the bit width. We designed a synapse circuit using TSMC 40 nm technology, and the synaptic weight was updated by the remote supervised method (ReSuMe) or spike timing-dependent plasticity (STDP). The circuit simulation results of the designed circuit show that it can execute ReSuMe and generate the time-window function for STDP with high energy efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

KINDERGARTEN teachers , *EARLY childhood education , *KINDERGARTEN children , *DIVISION of labor , *BASIC education , *TEACHER role - Abstract
This article problematizes the tense ratio between teachers and class assistants. This legally established division of labor undermines the care-education binomial and has a considerable impact on the quality of early childhood work. It will be argued that there is an inseparability of these functions, as guided by the reference curriculum of Minas Gerais and all the guiding documents of early childhood education. This documental analysis aims to investigate the reference curriculum of Minas Gerais in order to point out its perspectives on caring and educating in early childhood education, underlining the roles of the teacher and the kindergarten assistant. The first part will present a brief overview of the history of early childhood education and its struggle for legitimacy as a stage of basic education. It will be studied the reality of teachers and kindergarten assistants in the southern municipality of Minas Gerais regarding the administrative division of labor will be examined, comparing with what the reference curriculum of Minas Gerais considers ideal for early childhood education. It is expected to find a direction of legislation to strengthen early childhood education as a right, where caring and educating are not based on philanthropy or welfare, but on public policies. LEARNING , *NATIONAL curriculum , *SCIENTIFIC knowledge , *REQUIRED courses (Education) , *WOMEN teachers - Abstract
Teaching is challenging and exciting for those who are willing to see it far beyond the transmission of content, especially when recognizing students, educators and everyone who constitutes the school and academic curricula, as sociocultural, political and historical subjects. The curriculum went through several definitions, being the subject of discussions about the theoretical-analytical perspectives and influences in the teaching and learning process, until today. In this study, we understand that the curriculum goes beyond content, activities, assessments, teaching and learning, theory and practice, mainly because it consists of a cultural artifact that encompasses the multiple identities/differences that permeate the school environment. Thus, the main objective was to problematize the discourses of Biology teachers about curriculum and the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC), from the perspective of post-structuralist cultural studies. For this purpose, we conducted semi-structured interviews with eleven (11) male and female cisgender teachers, who teach Science/Biology subjects in the municipal and state public schools in Ceará. We adopted Foucauldian discourse analysis as a theoretical-analytical tool. The results showed that some/but teachers have already built a more comprehensive view of the curriculum, but the majority still do not question the universalist, content and technical discourses that underpin the BNCC. Thus, we emphasize the importance of educational public policies that encourage the (re)construction of pluralistic and democratic school curricula, not enclosed in "grids", but that contribute to the incessant sociocultural and political formation of "learners and learning subjects" beyond of scientific knowledge. DISCOURSE analysis , *VIDEOS , *CYBERSPACE , *CURRICULUM , *INSPIRATION , *INVENTIONS - Abstract
In this article, we start from the paths of a Doctoral thesis that explored the functioning of a curriculum in cyberspace, mobilizing methodological tools with elements of netnography and Foucauldianinspired discourse analysis, from a post-critical perspective. Here, our focus will be to describe how, by mobilizing these tools, we analyzed a set of videos published in the investigated curriculum. This action composes the methodological effort to consolidate an epistemological field of how to operate when analyzing the functioning of a non-school cultural curriculum. What we systematize here is not a prescription for the repetition of a formula, but seeks to function as inspiration and contribution in the construction of methodologies for curricular experimentation and invention. The objective of this article is to produce a reflection on the profanation as a way of operating with contents of religious dimension in religious teaching classes. It follows a methodology of essay writing, which takes into account the approximation of borders (in this case the concepts and materialities used for this). For this it presents a brief systematization of the concept of desecration, and broadens it for the idea of pedagogical profanation in order to problematize that in school it is possible to desecrate the contents, make them open and accessible to be studied as a matter of school study, the from curricular instigations to the component. In a second moment, we seek to analyze some records of possible pedagogical profiles in religious teaching classes, through articles, summaries and posters documented in the annals of the congresses and seminars promote by the Permanent National Forum of Religious Education – Fonaper. It is concluded by stating that there are relations between the concept of profanation and some practices of non-confessional religious teaching and that it is fundamental to exploit and expand debates as this in order to problematize the theoretical and practical assumptions of religious teaching curricula. This article originated from a research project, submitted to Plataforma Brasil and approved by the Research Ethics Committee – CNPq. The objective of this work is to present and problematize the experiences and pedagogical practices narrated by twenty-seven teachers who work in Basic Education, public and private, in the city of Caxias (MA), during the Covid-19 Pandemic, a period in which they developed their activities. EAD/remote pedagogical practices. This fabric, with a qualitative approach, of a bibliographic and documentary nature, presents three categories of analysis: I - Pedagogical/emotional/psychological monitoring; II - Social and professional appreciation of the teacher in the pandemic context; III - Personal and professional aspects in a post-pandemic perspective. The discussions, analyzes and syntheses, given from the narratives of the professionals interviewed, exchanged with a critical theoretical contribution, denote the lack of professional appreciation, the invisibility, accountability, heteronomy and intensification of the precariousness of the work of teachers. as in the pandemic social context, having as a background, the imposition of “a reinvention of pedagogical practice”, through an instrumental technological rationality, which represents a given conception of education and human formation. This paper presents an effective learning multi-spike deep spiking neural network with temporal feedback backpropagation for breast cancer detection using contrast-enhanced MRI images. The learning in the spiking network is a new universal temporal feedback called Temporal_Feedback_SpikeProp (TF_SpikeProp) and Temporal_Feedback_ReSuMe (TF_ReSuMe). Thus, it can be implemented on all kinds of algorithms such as MultiSpikeProp and MultiReSuMe algorithms and is compatible with all temporal codings. The presented spiking network is a functional network with high accuracy and convergence in low epochs. The new algorithm explores the influence of all presynaptic neurons on the output error and reduces the role of inactive neurons. Therefore, the error propagation of the spiking network is such that it affects not only the spike time of each neuron in the output spike time, but also the refractory time and the presynaptic spikes of the neuron during the spiking time of the output neuron. The spiking network can correct and adjust the weights, spike delay, spike threshold, and also the time constant of the spike collection kernel. In order to diagnose cancer tissue, time–frequency features such as STFT and packet wavelet transform (WPT) have been used along with texture recognition features such as co-occurrence matrix. The presented network achieved an accuracy of 98.3% in 23 epochs in SpikeProp algorithm, 97.4% in ReSuMe with Duke MRI dataset, 98.64% on MNIST, and 96.1% on Iris. The results have shown that the training algorithm used in this study can achieve high accuracy in low epochs compared to traditional algorithms, while solving the challenge of getting stuck in local minima and poor convergence, as well as reducing the problem of time confusion of output spikes to an acceptable level and providing a fully functional network in practice and reality. PHYSICAL education , *HEGEMONY , *ARGUMENT , *ATTITUDE (Psychology) - Abstract
The article identifies the permanence of a certain anti-scientific and anti-pedagogical behavior in the discursive production of Physical Education, especially in the hasty and mistaken transposition of concepts from the educational sciences. It resorts to poststructuralist arguments to problematize the indiscriminate use of the notion of approach to refer to teaching theories in the area. Aware that such a regime of truth enjoys hegemony, it resorts to the critical attitude proposed by Michel Foucault, through which it signals inconsistencies, at least when considering the genesis of the concept. As an alternative, it presents the notion of curriculum as more adequate and powerful to theorize the pedagogical work carried out in schools. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The intense process of slavery in Brazil publication to the exclusion of Afro-Brazilian and African populations, who created the resistance to survive the barbarism of the slave system. Just like yesterday, today the African peoples and their descendants in the Diaspora are challenged to re-exist in a scenario of denial of basic rights. This article reflects on the denial of quilombola memory and history in official curricula. Initially, it examines the possibilities of an intercultural curriculum for promoting quilombola history and culture in school contexts. Then, it presents the narratives of the residents of the remaining community of Alto do Tamanduá as possible paths for the dialogue with the quilombola memory. Furthermore, it analyzes the conditions of access to education in the community, based on the legal rules of Quilombola School Education. The study is based on the methodology of Oral History, with the use of identification, being part of an investigation at the master's level within the scope of ProfEPT / Ifal, which resulted in the conclusion of a documentary video with the social memories of the whole community. Without intending to end the reflections, it indicates other paths for the inclusion of quilombola memory in curricula. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Skills extraction is a critical task when creating job recommender systems. It is also useful for building skills profiles and skills knowledge bases for organizations. The aim of skills extraction is to identify the skills expressed in documents such as resumes or job postings. Several methods have been proposed to tackle this problem. These methods already perform well when it comes to extracting explicitly mentioned skills from resumes. But skills have different levels of abstraction: high-level skills can be determined by low-level ones. Instead of just extracting skill-related terms, we propose a multi-label classification architecture model based on convolutional neural networks to predict high-level skills from resumes even if they are not explicitly mentioned in these resumes. Experiments carried out on a set of anonymous IT resumes collected from the Internet have shown the effectiveness of our method reaching 98.79% of recall and 91.34% of precision. In addition, features (terms) detected by convolutional filters are projected on the input resumes in order to present to the user, the terms which contributed to the model decision. This article presents some reflections resulting from a broader research that sought to analyze the repercussions of Prova Brasil on the curriculum and teaching work in schools in the municipal networks of Campina Grande-PB and Pelotas-RS, understanding that external evaluations they have become one of the main technologies of reform and "modernization" of the State, in the service of the materialization and strengthening of neoliberal and neoconservative measures in the field of education. As a qualitative research, bibliographic review and documentary analysis were used, in addition to field research covering observations and semi-structured interviews with professionals working in each of the municipalities involved. As main results it was found that both municipalities have put in place policies of a managerial nature, which includes significant changes in the management of networks, with the active participation of actors from the private sector; under the justification of improving the results in external evaluations, especially Prova Brasil, they have been adopting their own evaluation policies in order to improve their performance at Ideb. This has opened up more space for the private sector, which provides advisory services, especially the Lemann Foundation. It was also observed that this process has intensified since the approval of the BNCC, which induces the alignment of management, evaluation and curriculum policies, with the necessary adaptation of schools and professionals to the standards imposed by it, reducing the spaces of autonomy and hindering the consolidation of democratic management in schools. In the text, the author's speech is systematized in a work table at the IX Curriculum Curriculum and Practices Colloquium promoted by the Curriculum Policies Research and Research Group (GEPPC) of the Faculty of Education of the Federal University of Paraíba in November 2020 The theme of the intervention was the implantation of the National Common Curricular Base - BNCC in Santa Catarina - a movement that in the state is being called Implementation of the Base Curriculum of the Territory of Santa Catarina. The points that stand out and guide the organization of this article are, respectively: a brief analysis of the Brazilian and Santa Catarina curriculum policy, both seen as aligned with the internationalizing discourses of a reformist transnational agenda; the mobilization of international privatist thinking in the production of BNCC in Brazil, and finally aspects of the recontextualization of BNCC texts in Santa Catarina. Santa Catarina is said to efficiently carry out its institutional / normative task, embracing the logic of national curricular policy, with some manifestation of criticism and resistance arising especially from academia and union spaces. Objective: The purpose of this commentary was to critically appraise the patellofemoral pain clinical practice guideline published by the Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy in 2019 and to summarize their recommendations for chiropractic practice. Methods: Quality and reporting of this guideline was assessed with the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation II (AGREE II) instrument. Three reviewers independently scored between 1-7 (strongly disagree-strongly agree) for 23 items organized into six quality domains. Results: AGREE II quality domain scores ranged between 57%-98%, with overall quality of the recommendation rated 89%. The guideline contained evidence summaries and/or recommendations for three topics: impairment/function-based diagnosis; examination; and interventions. Conclusion: Based on its methodological quality, we recommend the use of this guideline for the examination, diagnosis, and management of patellofemoral pain in chiropractic practice. A summary of recommendations from this guideline is presented for use within the scope of chiropractic practice in Canada. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Advanced practice nurses (APNs) now have great opportunities to serve in leadership positions for organizations, institutions of higher education, community and public agencies, and more. The need exists for APNs to have a full set of professional business documents readily available. Such common documents would extend beyond the professional business card and professional photograph to include the curriculum vitae, the resume, and the National Institutes of Health Biographical Sketch (biosketch) and a professional biosketch. Advanced practice nurses should understand the differences between the documents as each document helps to share the professional identity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In a society that communicates and connects through text, strengthening writing skills becomes a fundamental aspect in school. The purpose of this article is to identify the factors that allowed a Center for Digital Writing (CED) to operate as an institutional strategy to strengthen the academic writing. The method used was the case study. Two secondary education institutions participated, one public and one private, in the city of Medellín, Colombia. Questionnaires with open questions were applied to students, teachers, and tutors. In the results, the categories of academic writing counseling, institution integrated services, institutional projection and identity, promotion of services and curricular integration were addressed. In a CED, the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) goes beyond the teaching of tools usage, it entails strengthening the digital literacy processes from the areas and subjects of the school curriculum, where management, teachers, students and parents are involved. The conclusions confirm that recognizing the CED as part of the educational community generates actions aimed at its maintenance and sustainability, as a component of the institutional educational project. In addition, the integration of the CED with the directive and academic management is a factor that contributes to the institutional differentiation and sustainability of the strategy over time. In this article we present and discuss the value of the ethical dimension present as articulator in the organization of pedagogical work. Whereas Ethics is disfigured by the events and understandings of today's society, in which teachers hide behind masks as proletarians of unnecessary knowledge and useless to capital, analyze the ethical dimension and its importance for the process and educational practice presents itself as an appreciation of the human being and all its manifestations. Understanding the School as a space for interactions, the curriculum becomes a cultural artifact for the teacher to achieve his goal with a humanizing education that aims at the emancipation of the human being. Background Occipital lobe strokes are characterised by a visual field deficit (VFD) and the absence of a motor deficit. A persistent VFD may have significant long-term implications for a patient and their lifestyle. Our aim was to assess the overall impact of these events particularly patients' ability to return to driving. Methods All patients admitted with an acute occipital lobe stroke to a Dublin teaching hospital in 2017 were identified. Case notes were retrospectively reviewed to identify patients' pre-stroke function, stroke pathology, neurological losses and further vascular events. A follow up phone call was made 18 months after the event to assess if previous drivers had returned to driving and required the installation of formalised home supports after discharge. Results In 2017, 37 of 311 stroke patients admitted had a confirmed occipital lobe stroke. 33 of these patients (89.1%) had ischemic events. The median age was 76 (50-93) years old. Twenty-nine patients were able to undergo formal cognitive testing; the median Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MOCA) was 18 (2-29). 15 patients (40.5%) had underlying Atrial Fibrillation with one (6.7%) of this cohort being identified post discharge; 14 (85.7%) of those patients with ischemic strokes were anticoagulated for atrial fibrillation. The median length of stay was 33.9 days, with a range of 2-391 days. Further vascular events occurred in 2 (5.8%) of the patients. A follow up phone call was made to the 15 patients who drove prior to their event. 12 patients (80%) could not resume driving due to persistent VFD. One (7%) of the previous drivers had a home care package installed since discharge. Conclusion A persistent VFD results in long term problems including an increased risk of further vascular events, a reduction in overall independence and quality of life following an occipital lobe stroke. This study has led to a business plan for a dedicated hemianopia clinic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Highlights • Innovative methods for ranking résumés or curriculum vitae automatically • Methods based on the similarity between résumés instead of résumés and a job offer • Free of external resources such as word embedding and ontologies • Experiments done over a large corpus of real recruitment and selection processes • In average, 93% of résumés are ranked correctly. Abstract With the success of the electronic recruitment, now it is easier to find a job offer and apply for it. However, due to this same success, nowadays, human resource managers tend to receive high volumes of applications for each job offer. These applications turn into large quantities of documents, known as résumés or curricula vitae, that need to be processed quickly and correctly. To reduce the time necessary to process the résumés, human resource managers have been working with the scientific community to create systems that automate their ranking. Until today, most of these systems are based on the comparison of job offers and résumés. Nevertheless, this comparison is impossible to do in data sets where job offers are no longer available, as it happens in this work. We present two methods to rank résumés that do not use job offers or any semantic resource, unlike existing state-of-the-art systems. The methods are based on what we call Inter-Résumé Proximity , which is the lexical similarity between only résumés sent by candidates in response to the same job offer. Besides, we propose the use of Relevance Feedback, at general and lexical levels to improve the ranking of résumés. Relevance Feedback is applied using techniques based on similarity coefficients and vocabulary scoring. All the methods have been tested on a large corpus of 171 real selection processes, which correspond to more than 14,000 résumés. The developed methods can rank correctly, in average, 93% of the résumés sent to each job posting. The outcomes presented here show that it is not necessary to use job offers or semantic resources to provide high quality results. Furthermore, we observed that résumés have particular characteristics that as ensemble, work as a facial composite and provide more information about the job posting than the job offer. This certainly will change how systems analyze and rank résumés. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Due to its key role in the diffusion of knowledge in the academy, the abstract has been studied regarding aspects such as its lexical-grammatical performance and rhetorical organization. However, the ordering of these findings has not been made from the disciplinary view of biology. The objective of this study is to contribute with information regarding the writing of the abstract in the discipline of biology; in particular, regarding the rhetorical organization of the discursive genre, the author's positioning and the coherence relations. For this purpose, an articulation of the results of several empirical studies is presented. As a result of this bibliographic review, a synthesis of the characteristics of this genre in biology is presented, among which the mandatory moves of "method" and "product", its frequent writing in the first-person plural and the use of subordinated clauses to express author´s subjective evaluations. It is hoped that this synthesis will be a didactic contribution to disciplinary literacy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The résumé is a fixture within employment counseling, often viewed as a necessary product for securing employment. Résumés can also be a powerful vehicle for facilitating the development of positive career identities. The complex interplay of negative societal narratives with personal narratives can make the development of a positive identity, and the execution of an employment search, difficult for clients who have work histories complicated by personal and economic challenges (e.g., homelessness, intimate partner violence, histories of incarceration). The authors present résumé counseling as an opportunity for clients to develop stories of strength, reveal stories of difficulty, solidify a positive career identity, and rewrite positive future narratives. This article describes the strength-based narrative approach to résumé and employment counseling, illustrates its application with a hypothetical case, and offers practice recommendations. - Abstract
This article presents the results of a comparative study of summaries written by secondary- and university-level students enrolled in either the FL1 or FL2 program in a Canadian province outside Québec. The purpose is to compare the use of connector words in these summaries. To do so, the connector words were categorised according to four types of relationships, specifically addition, causality, opposition, and chronology. The frequency with which these words were used in the summaries was analysed by program and academic level, as well as compared to their use in the source text. The study showed differences in the frequency with which causal and temporal connecting words were used between the two programs as well as among the different academic levels. However, when connector use was adjusted for the length of the summaries, the only statistically significant differences were in the use of connector words for opposition, which increased at the university level. The study also showed that causal linking words were overused in summaries produced by all participants when compared to the source text. It also showed that the FL1 group used a greater lexical variety of connectors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

PERSONALITY , *COLOR photography , *EMOTIONAL stability , *CONSCIENTIOUSNESS , *EXTRAVERSION - Abstract
Given the importance of personality to predict consequential outcomes in the workplace, it is important to be able to measure it accurately. To date, no research has examined if people leave valid cues of their personality in résumé photographs. This research examined to what extent résumé photographs provide accurate information about the personality traits of their owner. Two observers rated 97 résumé photographs on four aspects: color photograph, photograph background, smile and professional attire. These ratings were compared with an accuracy criterion of the big five dimensions (self and peer reports). Results indicate that three out of the four cues are linked to extraversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness and emotional stability. These results suggest that résumé photographs can convey valid information about personality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

JOB hunting , *WEBSITES , *EMPLOYEES , *ARTIFICIAL intelligence , *EMPLOYEE recruitment - Abstract
Online jobs search through popular websites are quite beneficial having served for many years as a prominent tool for job seekers and employers alike. In spite of their valuable utility in linking employers with potential employees, the search process and technology utilized by job search websites have not kept pace with the rapid changes in computing capability and machine intelligence. The Information retrieval techniques utilized by these websites rely primarily on variants of manually entered search queries with some advanced similarity metrics for ranking search results. Advancements in machine intelligence techniques have enabled programmatic extraction of pertinent information about the job seeker and job postings without active user input. To this end, we developed a resume matching system, RésuMatcher, which intelligently extracts the qualifications and experience of a job seeker directly from his/her résumé, and relevant information about the qualifications and experience requirements of job postings. Using a novel statistical similarity index, RésuMatcher returns results that are more relevant to the job seekers experience, academic, and technical qualifications, with minimal active user input. Our method provides up to a 34% improvement over existing information retrieval methods in the quality of search results. In addition however, RésuMatcher requires minimal active user input to search for jobs, compared to traditional manual search-based methods prevalent today. These improvements, we hypothesize, will lead to more relevant job search results and a better overall job search experience for job seekers. As an alternative to the fragmented organization-centric job application process, job recruitment websites offered the promise of simplifying and streamlining the job search process. However, these websites offer limited functionality using generic and simplistic information retrieval methods, which being non-domain lead to a poor and frustrating search experience. In this paper, we present RésuMatcher, a personalized job-résumé matching system, which offers a novel statistical similarity index for ranking relevance between candidate résumés and a database of available jobs. In our experiments we show that our method offers a 37.44% improvement over existing information retrieval methods in the quality of matches returned. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores what sources students use for advice while writing their résumés, their reasons for choosing those sources, and their perceptions about the sources’ quality. Results from surveys, interviews, and focus groups with 86 undergraduates and 20 career counselors and instructors suggest issues with educators’ credibility and students’ access. To address these issues, the author suggests that educators approach the résumé as a research project, which empowers students and legitimizes educators’ expertise. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

A curriculum vitae or a résumé, in general, consists of personal details, education, work experience, qual- ifications, and references. The overall objective of this study was to extract such data as experience, features, and business and education information from résumés stored in human resources repositories. In this article, we propose an ontology-driven information extraction system that is planned to operate on several million free-format textual résumés to convert them to a structured and semantically enriched version for use in semantic data mining of data essential in human resources processes. The architecture and working mechanism of the system, similarity of the concept and matching techniques, and an inference mechanism are introduced, and a case study is presented. We investigated whether including an applicant’s photograph on a resume boosts or hampers the accurate assessment of that person’s (Big Five) personality traits and intelligence. A group of 114 participants rated 8 applicants (4 men and 4 women) with respect to their personality traits and intelligence. We used a 3 × 2 (Condition [resume with photograph, resume without photograph, photograph only] × Sex [male, female]) between-subjects design. In all conditions, all personality traits (except Agreeableness) were assessed at better than guessing level. Including a photograph on the resume did not significantly alter the accuracy of personality assessment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study analyzes the report of the teachers of the regular room and special education, in relation to the curriculum adaptation for students with intellectual disabilities. The survey, conducted through questionnaires, the participants were 18 teachers of a school board in the state of São Paulo, divided between: 8 teachers from regular class room who taught in elementary school for students with intellectual disabilities, 8 teachers ministered class in high school for students with intellectual disabilities and 2 teachers of special education. The results indicated that teachers recognize the importance of curriculum adaptation in teaching learners with intellectual disabilities, but has no clarity on the definition and use of resources and strategies tailored to favor the contents offered in the curriculum learning. However, the data revealed the need for teachers to share a broader vision of how to adapt learning contents. These data indicated the need for programs aimed at training teachers to work in the development of curriculum adaptation with students with intellectual disabilities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: This study examined the extent that personality information in resumes impacts hiring judgments through applicant's resumes. Study 1 examined lay theories regarding relationships between resume cues and the applicant's personality and hireability. Study 2 examined how the applicant's personality impacted hiring judgments through resumes. Design/Methodology/Approach: Data for both studies were collected in the context of a managerial position. For Study 1, participants assessed resume cues in regards to their relationship with personality and hireability. For Study 2, Human Resource personnel evaluated each resume in regards to personality and hireability. Findings: Results for Study 1 highlight several connections between applicants' personality and resumes, with strong links between resume content and perceptions of conscientiousness and agreeableness. Results for Study 2 indicate that personality was largely unrelated to ratings of hireability but perceptions of personality were strongly linked to hireability; actual personality was linked to the variability in cue information related to hireability, and conscientiousness was indirectly related to hireability through judgments of conscientiousness. Implications: Results from these studies suggest that personality and perceptions of personality play a greater role in resume development and screening than has been previously suggested. The pattern of results reported suggest that there are a number of resumes cues that accurately reflect an applicant's personality and influence perceptions of hireability. Originality/Value: By taking an exploratory approach, the current studies were able to explore a large variety of cues linked to personality and ratings of hireability. Results have implications for both applicants and HR personnel evaluating resumes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Publication of abstracts presented at a scientific meeting is a measure of the latter's scientific quality. Objectives To evaluate the publication rate for abstracts presented at the 2008 congress of the French Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine Society (SOFMER) and to identify (i) factors that were predictive of publication and (ii) the main reasons for non-publication. Methods We searched the PubMed database for publications related to SOFMER 2008 abstracts. We then screened the abstracts’ characteristics for features that were predictive of publication. Authors of abstracts that had not been published were contacted (by e-mail) in order to establish the reason(s) for non-publication. Results Of the 231 abstracts presented at SOFMER 2008, 49 (21.2%) had been published. Original studies submitted by French university teams were more likely to be published. Most of the unpublished abstracts had never been submitted to scientific journals. A heavy workload (limiting the time available for drafting a publication) and unwillingness to submit incomplete or preliminary studies were the main barriers to submission for publication. Conclusion SOFMER 2008s abstract publication rate was lower than those of other national or international medical congresses. University status and the performance of original research were predictive of publication. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recent work by the NCPH, OAH, and AHA has raised the profile of challenges in evaluating collaborative research during the tenure and promotion process.1 Although it is acknowledged that most public historians work in collaborative partnerships, few resources dissect the nature of those collaborations and how they should be credited. This article focuses on a single case study, the development of the history of science exhibit Imaging the Invisible, a collaboration among faculty, staff, and students (both graduate and undergraduate). It was also an interdisciplinary project with representation from at least seven different departments and programs in the humanities, social sciences, sciences, and engineering. This collaborative article reflects on the project, giving four perspectives on how credit can be shared.
