The article examines the challenge posed by the departure of German Chancellor Angela Merkel to her successor in 2021. Merkel admits that she failed to act decisively on climate change in her final annual press conference as chancellor. Among the issues in which her administration acted decisively were nuclear power, gay marriage and European Union debt. Also noted is the importance of Merkel to Europe in light of her response to crises including the Russian invasion of Ukraine and Brexit.
