An efficient new electrophilic reagent combination of N-Halosuccinimides (NXS)/BF3-H2O is developed as BF3-H2O is more economic, easy to prepare, nonoxidizing and offers high acidity. The structural aspects of the BF3-H2O complex are investigated.

Density functional studies, based on the local density approximation including nonlocal correction for correlation and exchange self consistently, are carried out for the equilibrium structures of the phosphinidene transition metal complex MLn=PH. The calculated geometries indicate that the length of the metal-phosphorus bond for all studied complexes, depend solely on the atomic size of the transition metal and not on the nature of its ligands.

The catalytic effect of trifluoroethanol (TFE) on the electrophilic chlorination of arenes is studied. It is found that TFE catalyzes the chlorination by providing a complementary charge template to the transition state and thereby enables oxychlorination of less activate arenes.
