Described herein is a stereo- and regioselective cis-hydrophosphorylation reaction of the internal alkyne of 1,3-enynes that accesses various 1,3-dienes in good isolated yields. The visible-light irradiation of NiCl2(PPh3)2 allows the generation of highly reactive nickel(II)-phosphorus species that subsequently migrate into the internal alkyne of the 1,3-enynes and protonate the resulting vinyl nickel species, leading to various phosphinoyl 1,3-butadienes under mild reaction conditions.

A porous organic polymer (POL-Xantphos) was synthesized and employed as a heterogeneous ligand for selective hydrosilylation of alkynes. It exhibits high selectivity and catalytic efficiency toward a broad range of alkynes. Owing to the confinement effect of the micropore structure, POL-Xantphos was far superior to the monomeric Xantphos ligands in controlling the selectivity. By performing hydrosilylation in a flow reactor system, separation and regeneration of the Ni/POL-Xantphos catalyst are easily achieved without any loss in selectivity or activity.

This robust protocol proceeds with a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance under relatively mild reaction conditions.

An efficient Cp*Rh(III)-catalyzed, chelation-assisted C(sp2)–H acetoxylation and hydroxylation reaction has been developed for the first time. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions and allows for selective preparation of C–H acetoxylation and hydroxylation products, thus providing a good complement to previous C–H oxygenation reactions and expanding the field of Cp*Rh(III)-catalyzed C–H functionalizations.

A convenient and highly efficient palladium-catalyzed decarboxylative annulation of 2-arylbenzoic acids with [60]fullerene has been exploited to synthesize the novel and scarce [60]fullerene-fused dihydrophenanthrenes. The use of Lewis acid ZnCl2 is crucial for the success of the present formal [4 + 2] annulation reaction. Plausible reaction pathways leading to the observed products have been proposed, and the electrochemistry of the fullerene products has also been investigated.

Thiophenes containing an adjacent C≡C group as ligands for PdII-promoted organic reactions are reported for the first time. These ligands were utilized as catalytic sites and integrated into the skeleton of conjugated microporous polymers. By employing these CMP materials as selective regulators, oxidative Heck reactions between arylboronic esters and electronically unbiased alkenes provide highly selective linear products.

An exoselective copper-catalyzed arylation- and vinylation-carbocyclization of electron-deficient alkenes was developed to provide rapid and efficient access to a variety of functionalized 3,3-disubstituted oxindoles. An unprecedented Rh(III)-catalyzed direct intermolecular C-H amidation with N-hydroxycarbamates has been developed. Different directing groups, such as pyridine, pyrimidine, pyrazole, and N-OMe oxime, can be employed in this C-H amidation process, providing valuable N-carbamate-protected arylamines (e.g., Cbz, Moz, Ac, Boc, and Fmoc). More importantly, this process may afford a new avenue for intermolecular C-H amidation where readily available N-hydroxycarbamates can be used as the nitrogen source.

An unprecedented Rh-catalyzed direct addition of aryl C-H bonds to nitrosobenzenes has been developed under very mild reaction conditions (room temperature). The reaction is highly step-, atom-, and redox-economic and compatible with air and water to N-selectively provide a variety of N-diarylhydroxylamines in good to excellent yields. More importantly, this process may provide a new direction for C-N bond formation through direct C(sp(2))-H functionalization.

A Rh(III)-catalyzed direct aldehyde C-H amidation from aldehydes and N-chloroamines, prepared in situ from amines, has been developed via C-H bond activation under very mild reaction conditions. A variety of primary and secondary amines were used to afford the corresponding amides in moderate to excellent yields.

A convenient and facile palladium-catalyzed reaction of [60]fullerene (C60) with 2-aryl cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds via the enolate-directed sp(2) C-H activation and sp(3) C-H functionalization has been exploited to synthesize the novel and rare C60-fused spiroindanes for the first time. This reaction is easy to perform with broad substrate scope and provides diversified products in 20-50% yields. A plausible reaction mechanism involving the palladium-catalyzed enolate-directed C-H activation and subsequent cyclization has been proposed, and the electrochemistry of the C60-fused spiroindanes has also been investigated.

An enantioselective synthesis of (+)-lithospermic acid, a potent anti-HIV agent, has been accomplished in a convergent manner in nine steps. The synthesis features an enantioselective intramolecular oxa-Michael addition catalyzed by a quinidine derivative, a hypervalent iodine-mediated rearrangement of chromanone to dihydrobenzofuran, an enantioselective α-oxyamination, and an intermolecular C-H olefination.

An enantioselective synthesis of (-)-(α)-kainic acid in 15 steps with an overall yield of 24% is reported. The pyrrolidine kainoid precursor with the required C2/C3 trans stereochemistry was prepared with complete diastereoselectivity via an unprecedented SmI2-catalyzed intramolecular [3 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of an aryl cyclopropyl ketone and an alkyne. Double bond isomerization was then employed to set the remaining stereochemistry at the C4 position en route to (-)-(α)-kainic acid.

A Rh(III)-catalyzed intramolecular redox-neutral or oxidative annulation of a tethered alkyne has been developed to efficiently construct 3,4-fused indoles via a C–H activation pathway. The advantages of this process are (1) ready availability of annulation precursors; (2) broad substrate scope; (3) complete regioselectivity; (4) simple and mild reaction conditions; and (5) no need for an external oxidant or to employ molecular oxygen as the stoichiometric terminal oxidant.

Monofluorovinyl tosylate was developed as a practical vinyl fluoride building block to couple with a variety of arylboronic acids in the presence of a palladium catalyst. The high stereoselectivity of 2-aryl-1-fluoroethene derivatives was achieved. This approach is also applicable to the synthesis of 2,2-diaryl-1-fluoroethenes in good yields.
