The spatial response mechanism of hydrology and water quality of large river-connected lakes is very complicated. In this study, we developed a spatial response analysis method that couples wavelet correlation analysis (WTC) with self-organizing maps (SOM), revealing the spatial response and variation of water level and water quality in Poyang Lake, China's largest river-connected lake, over the past decade. The results show that: (1) there was significant spatial heterogeneity in water level and quality during the dry seasons (2010–2018) compared to other hydrological stages. (2) We identified a more pronounced difference in response of water level and quality between northern and southern parts of Poyang Lake. As the distance increases from the northern lake outlet, the impact of rising water levels on water quality deterioration intensified during the dry seasons. (3) The complex spatial heterogeneity of water level and quality response in the dry seasons is primarily influenced by water level fluctuations from the northern region and the cumulative pollutant entering the lake from the south, which particularly leads to the reversal of the response in the central area of Poyang Lake. The results of this study can contribute to scientific decision-making regarding water environment zoning management in large river-connected lakes amidst complex environment conditions. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia and its incidence increases with sepsis. However, data on new-onset AF during sepsis hospitalization remain limited in China. We aimed to evaluate the incidence, risk factors, and associated mortality of new-onset AF in sepsis patients in China. We conducted a retrospective study using the National Data Center for Medical Service system, from 1923 tertiary and 2363 secondary hospitals from 31 provinces in China from 2017 to 2019.In total we included 1,425,055 sepsis patients ≥ 18 years without prior AF. The incidence of new-onset AF was 1.49%. Older age, male sex, hypertension, heart failure, coronary disease, valvular disease, and mechanical ventilation were independent risk factor. New-onset AF was associated with a slight increased risk of mortality (adjusted RR 1.03, 95% CI 1.01-1.06). Population attributable fraction suggested AF accounted for 0.2% of sepsis deaths. In this large nationwide cohort, new-onset AF occurred in 1.49% of sepsis admissions and was associated with a small mortality increase. To estimate the severity of the disease in outpatients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in Hunan Province, China and use the subgroup analysis to evaluate the reliability of the new comprehensive evaluation of Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD). COPD outpatients from 12 medical centers in Hunan Province, China were stratified into groups A-D, and group D patients were further stratified into subgroups D 1 -D 3 according to the GOLD 2016 and 2019 comprehensive assessment. Demography, clinical characteristics and medications were compared among groups. In 1017 COPD outpatients, the distribution from group A to D and subgroup D 1 to D 3 was 41 (4.0%), 249 (24.5%), 17 (1.7%), 710 (69.8%) and 214 (30.2%), 204 (28.7%), 292 (41.1%), according to GOLD 2016. In terms of demographic and clinical characteristics related to A-D groups, there was a significant difference in COPD assessment test (CAT), modified Medical British Research Council (mMRC), the clinical COPD questionnaire(CCQ), age, BMI, education level, smoking history, comorbidities, the course of chronic bronchitis/emphysema, number of exacerbations/hospitalisations in the previous year, treatment protocols, forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) % predicted, and FEV1/forced vital capacity (FVC) (p < 0.01). Furthermore, some patients in groups C-D regrouped to groups A-B were all C 1 and D 1 subgroups according to GOLD 2019. Comparing subgroup D 1 with group B, subgroup D 2 and subgroup D 3 , it was found that the demography, clinical characteristics and medications of subgroup D 1 were the closest to group B, according to GOLD 2016 (p < 0.01). The disease severity of outpatients with COPD in Hunan Province was more pronounced in group B and D and patients in groups A-D had different demography, clinical characteristics and medications. To determine the prevalence of bladder and bowel dysfunction (BBD) and its relationship with delayed elimination communication (EC) in children. A cross-sectional study was carried out in kindergartens and primary schools in mainland China. A total of 10,166 children ranging from 4 to 10 years old were included. A total of 10,166 valid questionnaires were collected, and 409 children were diagnosed with BBD. The overall prevalence was 4.02% (409/10,166) and decreased with age, from 6.19% at age 4 to 1.96% at age 10. With the prolonged use of disposable diapers (DDs), the commencement of usage of EC in a child was significantly put off or delayed by parents, and the prevalence of BBD amongst these children increased (P < 0.001). The prevalence of BBD among children who stopped using DDs within the first 12 months and after more than 24 months was 2.79% and 4.38% respectively. Additionally, the prevalence among children who started EC within 12 months after birth and those who never engaged in EC was 1.36% and 15.71% respectively. Early introduction of EC and weaning of DD usage has a positive correlation with lower prevalence of BBD in children in China.

Water holding capacity (WHC) is an important sensory attribute that greatly influences meat quality. However, the molecular mechanism that regulates the beef WHC remains to be elucidated. In this study, the longissimus dorsi (LD) muscles of 49 Chinese Simmental beef cattle were measured for meat quality traits and subjected to RNA sequencing. WHC had significant correlation with 35 kg water loss (r = - 0.99, p < 0.01) and IMF content (r = 0.31, p < 0.05), but not with SF (r = - 0.20, p = 0.18) and pH (r = 0.11, p = 0.44). Eight individuals with the highest WHC (H-WHC) and the lowest WHC (L-WHC) were selected for transcriptome analysis. A total of 865 genes were identified as differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between two groups, of which 633 genes were up-regulated and 232 genes were down-regulated. Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment revealed that DEGs were significantly enriched in 15 GO terms and 96 pathways. Additionally, based on protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, animal QTL database (QTLdb), and relevant literature, the study not only confirmed seven genes (HSPA12A, HSPA13, PPARγ, MYL2, MYPN, TPI, and ATP2A1) influenced WHC in accordance with previous studies, but also identified ATP2B4, ACTN1, ITGAV, TGFBR1, THBS1, and TEK as the most promising novel candidate genes affecting the WHC. These findings could offer important insight for exploring the molecular mechanism underlying the WHC trait and facilitate the improvement of beef quality.

Genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) arrays can be used to explore homozygosity segments, where two haplotypes inherited from the parents are identical. In this study, we identified a total of 27,358 runs of homozygosity (ROH) with an average of 153 ROH events per animal in Chinese local cattle. The sizes of ROH events varied considerably ranging from 0.5 to 66 Mb, with an average length of 1.22 Mb. The highest average proportion of the genome covered by ROH (~11.54% of the cattle genome) was found in Nanda cattle (NDC) from South China, whereas the lowest average proportion (~3.1%) was observed in Yanhuang cattle (YHC). The average estimated F ROH ranged from 0.03 in YHC to 0.12 in NDC. For each of three ROH classes with different sizes (Small 0.5-1 Mb, Medium 1-5 Mb and Large >5 Mb), the numbers and total lengths of ROH per individual showed considerable differences across breeds. Moreover, we obtained 993 to 3603 ROH hotspots (which were defined where ROH frequency at a SNP within each breed exceeded the 1% threshold) among eight cattle breeds. Our results also revealed several candidate genes embedded with ROH hotspots which may be related to environmental conditions and local adaptation. In conclusion, we generated baselines for homozygosity patterns in diverse Chinese cattle breeds. Our results suggested that selection has, at least partially, played a role with other factors in shaping the genomic patterns of ROH in Chinese local cattle and might provide valuable insights for understanding the genetic basis of economic and adaptive traits.

Haemolymph microbiome was considered to be unique to healthy invertebrates and beneficial to the host against external pathogens, including disease resistance and maintenance of homeostasis. Here, we investigated the effects of elevated water temperature on infection of haemolymph microbiome of the hard-shelled mussel (Mytilus coruscus). Exposure to Vibrio. cyclitrophicus resulted in high mortality of mussels on day nine at 27 °C. The haemolymph was collected to determine the microbiota by 16 S rRNA gene sequencing. Exposure to waterborne V. cyclitrophicus increased the mortality of mussels that was associated with a reduction in the diversity of their microbial community. Principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) revealed that temperature was an essential factor in shaping microbial communities in mussel haemolymph. Vibrio exposure promoted the proliferation of opportunistic pathogens (e.g., Arcobacter and Francisella) at a lower temperature. A high abundance of Vibrio present in live and dead mussels, at 27 °C might contribute greatly to mortality, as indicated by linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe). These data suggested that the dynamics of microbial community have unique biomarker species in mussel haemolymph that could be used as health indicators. An elevated temperature may reduce the ability of bacterial elimination function against infection in mussel haemolymph.

Planktonic fungi are important components of aquatic ecosystems, and analyses of their community composition and function have far-reaching significance for the ecological management and maintenance of reservoir environments. However, few studies have investigated the composition, distribution, and function of planktonic fungi in reservoir ecosystems and their relationship with water quality. Here, the composition of the planktonic fungal community in the surface water layer of the Danjiangkou Reservoir is investigated using Illumina MiSeq sequencing. According to the results, the reservoir community is primarily composed of 7 phyla, including Ascomycota, Rozellomycota, Basidiomycota, Chytridiomycota, and Zygomycota, comprising 294 genera, demonstrating the rich diversity of this community. Redundancy analysis (RDA) of the planktonic fungal community and environmental factors showed dissolved oxygen (DO), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total nitrogen (TN), chlorophyll a (Chl a), and permanganate (COD Mn ) to be important factors influencing the distribution of planktonic fungi. Spearman correlation analysis of the planktonic fungal community composition and diversity indices with physical and chemical water quality parameters showed that the impacts of TN, COD and DO were the most significant. The results of this study on the planktonic fungal community in the Danjiangkou Reservoir area using high-throughput sequencing revealed that the community is sensitive to water quality parameters. This result provides a reference for studying the composition and distribution of the planktonic fungal community in Danjiangkou Reservoir and its role in the biogeochemical cycle.

Cryptococcosis is a globally distributed infectious fungal disease. However, much remains unknown about its molecular epidemiology in many parts of the world. In this study, we analyzed 86 clinical Cryptococcus neoformans isolates from 14 regions in Jiangxi Province in south central China. Each isolate was from a different patient and 35 of the 86 (40.7%) patients were infected with HIV. All strains belonged to serotype A and mating type α (MATα). Genotyping based on DNA sequences at seven nuclear loci revealed eight sequence types (STs) among the 86 isolates, including two novel STs that have not been reported from other parts of the world. ST5 was the dominant genotype and our comparative analyses showed that these genotypes in Jiangxi likely originated by dispersal from other regions within and outside of China and/or mutations from another genotype within Jiangxi. Though none of the isolates was resistant to the five tested antifungal drugs (flucytosine, amphotericin B, fluconazole, itraconazole, and voriconazole), obvious differences in their minimum inhibitory concentrations were observed, even among isolates of the same ST. Our results suggest that continuous monitoring should be conducted to understand the changing dynamics of C. neoformans in this and other regions.

The freshwater snail Oncomelania hupensis is the unique intermediate host of the blood fluke Schistosoma japonicum, which is the major cause of schistosomiasis. The snail inhabits two contrasting environments: the hilly and marshland regions. The hilly snails are smaller in size and have the typical smooth shell, whereas the marshland snails are larger and possess the ribbed shell. To reveal the differences in gene expression between the hilly and marshland snails, a total of six snails, three per environment, were individually examined by RNA sequencing technology. All paired-end reads were assembled into contigs from which 34,760 unigenes were predicted. Based on single nucleotide polymorphisms, principal component analysis and neighbor-joining clustering revealed two distinct clusters of hilly and marshland snails. Analysis of expression changes between environments showed that upregulated genes relating to immunity and development were enriched in hilly snails, while those associated with reproduction were over-represented in marshland snails. Eight differentially expressed genes between the two types of snails were validated by qRT-PCR. Our study identified candidate genes that could be targets for future functional studies, and provided a link between expression profiling and ecological adaptation of the snail that may have implications for schistosomiasis control.

Copy number variations (CNVs) are defined as deletions, insertions, and duplications between two individuals of a species. To investigate the diversity and population-genetic properties of CNVs and their diverse selection patterns, we performed a genome-wide CNV analysis using high density SNP array in Chinese native cattle. In this study, we detected a total of 13,225 CNV events and 3,356 CNV regions (CNVRs), overlapping with 1,522 annotated genes. Among them, approximately 71.43 Mb of novel CNVRs were detected in the Chinese cattle population for the first time, representing the unique genomic resources in cattle. A new V i statistic was proposed to estimate the region-specific divergence in CNVR for each group based on unbiased estimates of pairwise V ST . We obtained 12 and 62 candidate CNVRs at the top 1% and top 5% of genome-wide V i value thresholds for each of four groups (North, Northwest, Southwest and South). Moreover, we identified many lineage-differentiated CNV genes across four groups, which were associated with several important molecular functions and biological processes, including metabolic process, response to stimulus, immune system, and others. Our findings provide some insights into understanding lineage-differentiated CNVs under divergent selection in the Chinese native cattle.
