Abstract: In the aza-Baylis–Hillman reaction of N-sulfonated imines with 2-cyclohexen-1-one or 2-cyclopenten-1-one, we found that by using (R)-2′-dimethylphosphanyl-[1,1′]binaphthalenyl-2-ol LB1 as a chiral phosphine Lewis base, the corresponding Baylis–Hillman adducts 2 or 3 can be obtained in good yields and moderate enantiomeric excess. In the presence of a catalytic amount of chiral imino-thiophosphoramide ligand L7 (6 mol %) and Cu(I) salt (3 mol %), the asymmetric addition of diethylzinc to α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds could be achieved in good yields with moderate ees (up to 75% ee) at −20 °C in toluene. We utilized a reported quinidine-derived chiral amine 1 to catalyze the asymmetric Baylis–Hillman reaction of aldehydes with methyl vinyl ketone. The enantioselectivities increase and in some cases, the absolute configuration of the Baylis–Hillman adducts can be inverted by the use of proline or lithium salt additives. The highest ee achieved is 49% with S configuration at the newly formed stereogenic centre. When using chiral amine 1 to catalyze the asymmetric Baylis–Hillman reaction of aldehydes with (α)-naphthyl acrylate, ee as high as 92% can be achieved. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

In the Baylis–Hillman type reaction of chiral non-racemic N-sulfinimines 1 with cyclopent-2-en-1-one, we found that in the presence of a catalytic amount of the Lewis base PhPMe2 (10 mol%), diastereoselective reaction could be achieved in toluene at room temperature to give the normal Baylis–Hillman adducts 2 in good yields and high diastereoselectivities.
