This article provides information on electronic information resources on economics in the U.S. The traditional bastion of scholarly literature in economics has been EconLit, the database of the American Economics Association. It indexes six document types: journal articles, books, collective volume articles, dissertations, working papers and book reviews. It is not just an index database, but also contains abstracts and some full text. NetEc, the network for economists, began as an international academic effort to improve the communication of economics via electronic media and took full advantage of Internet technology. The scholarly literature in economics frequently involves working papers, the pre-prints of the academic economic research community. These working papers are collected in RePEc, which is a free, open access source. The largest contributors are listed at the site and include universities, publishers and governmental bodies. The National Association for Business Economics acts as a portal to the profession. Not only does it provide on its home page news of interest to economists, it also has links to useful and interesting information in the field of business economics.

Apparently, physicist have been one of the most innovative groups in developing open access digital archives and free subsets of those. Along with the Institute for Scientific Information, physicists made the most out of cited references through Web links. The University of Southampton, the British host of the arXive.org preprint archives, is also home of many innovative, open access digital projects, the reprints software that makes self-archiving of research papers quick and easy, the cogprints.org archive of research papers in cognitive sciences, the Journal of Digital Information, and Psychology.

An interview with Dona Scheeder of the Law Library of Congress is presented. Willard Marriott Library at The University of Utah, in partnership with Brigham Young University (BYU) and Utah State University (USU). The statewide program quickly became a model for other institutions across the country and have been and remain a leading edge for newspaper digitization, especially within the public sector. The program presents digital images and searchable text of historic Utah newspapers to the general public through its website. Anyone with an interest in history can search by keyword or browse by title and date, from any computer.

The article examines the factors that contribute to the growth of online books. In the traditional book industry, authors never get the authority over publishing. But with introduction of online books, authors may have the chance to get back some control. Several publishers announcing their interest indicate that online book is reaching critical mass. Books published on paper can also be digitized, which means more income for authors because most digital rights in force give them 50 percent of the publisher's proceed.

This article focuses on online sources for property data of metals. Information on metals chemistry, the metals business and alloy patents is readily available in specialized databases that have been evaluated many times in the past, based on the general content of the databases. The technical literature on metals properties is adequately covered by the large comprehensive databases. For the 10-year period 1993 to 2004, a search on fatigue in aluminum yielded 1,978 items from Ei Compendex, 3,456 from INSPEC and 486 from SciSearch. For a search on stainless steel, results from Ei Compendex were 14,847, from INSPEC, 7,013, and from SciSearch, 2,053. A more specific search on friction stir welding gave 395 items from Ei Compendex, 169 from INSPEC, and 237 from SciSearch. Web-based sources of information on metals properties include ASM Materials Information Online, the most comprehensive peer-reviewed source. ASM Online is a compilation of data from the 22,000 pages of 21 ASM Handbooks, the Alloy Center, the Micrograph Center, and the Failure Analysis Center. The ASM Handbooks cover all aspects of metals technology including property data, heat treating, surface engineering, metallography, corrosion, testing, forming, casting, and machining. The Alloy Center provides property data and processing guidelines drawn from various ASM publications, including the Alloy Digest and worldwide equivalence data for all alloys. Included are more than 15,000 worldwide alloy designations, 4,800 material data sheets, 1,050 time-temperature curves, and 450 fatigue curves.

The article reports that OCLC Online Computer Library Center Inc. has added two new databases to its reference services, FirstSearch and EPIC. ProceedingsFirst and PapersFirst index conference papers, sources of leading-edge research. ProceedingsFirst offers tables of contents and lists papers from worldwide conferences, professional meetings and symposia and provides an overview of the activities at such meetings. PapersFirst indexes individual papers presented at conferences, symposia and meetings worldwide. In PapersFirst, each paper is described with keywords and a description of up to 1,500 characters. The file is expected to grow by 500,000 papers each year. ProceedingsFirst and PapersFirst are available on a per-search basis, through subscription and as part of the FirstSearch Base Package. The FirstSearch service is designed for library patrons, with an end-user interface that allows patrons to move easily through the online search process in just a few steps, without training or online searching experience.

This article announces that Nature Publishing Group and the Allen Institute for Brain Science has launched the Neuroscience Gateway, a free online resource for neuroscience and genomics research. The Neuroscience Gateway, which was available in early May 2006, provides the latest papers, neuroscience news, and free access to highlights lights of key articles. It will also provide free access to highlighted primary research papers from journals in the Nature family as well as direct access to the Allen Brain Atlas, a freely available scientific resource developed by the Allen Institute.

ISI ResearchSoft announced the release of WriteNote, a Web-based research and writing tool designed for the undergraduate market. Sold as an annual, sitewide subscription to the institution, WriteNote is designed to help students conduct research and compose papers. WriteNote, which is customized for each campus, takes students to their library resources. There, users can search for relevant content and capture references into their personal library folders. They can also annotate and save Web pages for citing in their papers..

This article compares the Internet search tools Google Scholar and Scirus. With an initial focus on research articles from publishers participating in the CrossRef project and several collections of online preprints and other major scholarly sites, Google established a new approach to a broad range of scholarly literature. Google Scholar aims to include peer-reviewed papers, theses, books, preprints, abstracts and technical reports. Basically, Google Scholar includes Web pages that either look like an article or other scholarly document. In 2001, Elsevier launched Scirus as a Web search engine that would search both Elsevier's online journals in ScienceDirect along with selected, science-oriented portions of the Web. Despite all the limitations and problems, both offer some unique reasons to use them beyond just watching their future development. Both of these tools may work better, or at least appear to work better, for the affiliated scholar.

This article addresses the impact of the advent of Weblogs on the printing of directory information references in the U.S. Distribution and production costs make the pure online option the only way to go for directory publishers. The Manufacturers' Agents National Association came to the same conclusion five years ago when it decided to give up on print and make its Directory available only electronically. InfoCommerce Group Inc. is not surprised at all by the move from paper to electronic. The company researches the directory industry and publishes Database Subscription Pricing Benchmark which examines the state of pricing for B2B subscription databases. The latest report, published in March 2005, presents data as of the end of 2004 and benchmarks it against InfoCommerce's research findings in 2000.

Blackwell Publishing has announced the addition of more than 250 social science and humanities journals to its online research tool, Blackwell Synergy. According to the sales and marketing director at Blackwell Publishing, many of the journals on Synergy now include CrossRef linking to cited articles, JSTOR links to back volumes, and reference links to the ISI database. In addition, several of these journals also have OnlineEarly papers, where peer-reviewed articles are posted online before the print issue is published. Librarians can set up a single platform for all their Blackwell journals in the Library Administrator area of the Synergy site.

The article presents information on the electronic publishing software Folio VIEWS 3.0. Folio Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Mead Data Central Inc. and the developer of Folio VIEWS 3.0, defines electronic publishing as publishing information in an online, electronic medium, rather than on paper. The old standard involves paper, books and other printed material in the form of anything one can pick up and read without the aid of a computer or some other electronic device. This article reports on SocINDEX databases offered by EBSCO Publishing as of June 2005. SocINDEX and SocINDEX with Full Text are now available via EBSCOhost. SoclNDEX features more than 1.3 million records with subject headings from a 15,000-term sociology-specific thesaurus as welt as abstracts for more than 620 core journals dating back to 1895. It also provides priority coverage of more than 500 journals and selective coverage of more than 1,070 other journals. Indexing for books, conference papers, and other sources is included, as are searchable cited references. SoclNDEX with Full Text provides the same indexing and abstracts as Soc-lNDEX, as well as the full text of 72 priority journals and 241 core journals dating back to 1895. The database also includes the full text of 545 books and 6,711 conference papers.

This article reviews the Learner's Library (LL) database produced by Knowledge Ventures Inc. It is a database of multidisciplinary, full-text journal articles intended primarily for college students. Social science has the largest number of titles, with approximately 80. Arts and humanities, science and current events each have about 50 and business has about 20. The database's search results are often thin and spotty, with the same few periodicals providing the bulk of the retrieval in a given search. It uses relevance searching and there is no field limiting or data searching. It is the only service that has only one search method. An LL search identifies the passage within the individual document that has the highest occurrence of search terms and it sorts results accordingly. The idea is that users do not have to read through a lengthy and difficult article. Users just cut the database's quote and paste it into their research paper. There are two major faults with the database's searching. First, searches are full of duplicates. Moreover, the documents provided lack original graphics such as tables, charts and illustrations. LL is a subscription service that is sold to individuals. The cost is $9.95/week, $24.95/month, $49.95/6 months and $74.95/year.

This article reports that The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star have joined 62 other U.S. newspapers online with Vu/Text in 1990. Both papers provide in-depth coverage of area military installations, including the world's largest naval installation, Norfolk Naval Base in Virginia. Other military posts include headquarters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Norfolk Naval Air Station, and Oceana Naval Air Station. Related industries such as shipbuilding and repairing are also covered by the papers. They are rich resources for other regional topics as well, such as financial information, medicine, and the state government.

The article claims that the increase of scientific activity in biotechnology and materials science is manifested by the increasing number of abstracts in the Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) database from 1984 to 1989. According to an analysis of five-year data from 1984 to 1989, abstracts are designated to one of 80 subject sections of the CAS database. Among the subject sections that grew more than 30% between 1984 and 1989 include immunochemistry, fermentation and bioindustrial chemistry, and essential oils and cosmetics.

According to the study Wireless Internet Use, conducted by researchers of the Pew Internet & American Life Project, almost one-third of U.S. people accessed web-based information and sent instant messages using their cellular phones. The international nonprofit organization New Media Consortium (NMC) introduced the Horizon Project in March 2002 to increase the understanding of people on web resources.

This section provides an update on new databases released by several U.S. publishers as of September 2005. Elsevier announced the release of ScienceDirect College Edition. This database offers students and teachers access to full-text journals and books in a variety of disciplines. Greenwood Publishing Group released Greenwood Digital Collection, a research platform of reference, academic, and general interest e-books. The collection features some 4,000 complete-text titles; multiple users may check out a title simultaneously. Readex announced the availability of a fully searchable digital edition of American State Papers 1789-1838.

This paper looks at new and enhanced databases in the information services field. Dialog announced that it has added a database of German full-text patents, with integrated English- language machine translations, to its Dialog-branded family of services. The new file contains approximately 3.1 million German patent records, starting in 1967. ProQuest Information and Learning announced the release of Latin American Newsstand, an electronic full-text current events collection featuring 30 newspapers, magazines, and wire services from 12 countries. Each title will have an interface in its native language, both Spanish and Portuguese interfaces will be available. ProQuest also announced that The Boston Globe's historical content will be added to the ProQuest Historical Newspapers collection. The content will appear online beginning this month, February 2005, covering the period from the paper's first published edition in 1872 through 1922. Thomson Gale has launched The Shakespeare Collection, featuring general reference data, full-text scholarly periodicals, reprinted criticism, primary source material, and the full-text annotated works from The Arden Shakespeare. The company also announced that Book Review Index is now available online.

The article describes the utilization of Microsoft Access to develop a basic, effective and inexpensive electronic resource management (ERM) for the University of Wisconsin--La Crosse's Murphy Library. Attending the "Taming the Electronic Tiger: Effective Management of E-Resources" symposium in January 2004 influenced the author's decision to create an ERM for the library. The initial development of the ERM took about two months and 40 hours. It featured vendor names, link between specific databases and vendors, data elements, alternate login information and Uniform Resource Locators (URL) links. The author claimed that the ERM brought about significant improvement to the library.

Keiser suggested that tools which can automatically monitor people, companies, products, and activities across both traditional and Web-only media are gaining momentum. Results are used in public relations, sales and marketing, and competitive intelligence. Players in the field of reputation monitoring include QucikBrowse, CyberALert, Tracerlock, Nexcerpt, and eWatch. This article focuses on the things that online users hate about Web sites and the Internet. Sree Sreenivasan, a journalism professor at Columbia University, wrote a column titled Stuff I Hate, for PoynterOnline in 2005. He wrote a similar piece in 2003. In each, he asked readers to tell him what they hated online. Responses to his most recent article indicate that things haven't really improved. For example, there are still plenty of Web sites that don't include easy-to-find contact information. One person complained about going to a newspaper Web page and not being able to figure out where the paper is located. A medical writer said he was frustrated by Web stories without a date because he can't tell how fresh or how stale the information is. Other peeves included slow-loading home pages, often due to promiscuous use of music or graphics; pages that mess with a user's browser; Web sites that require downloading special software in order to access content; sites that present a seizure-inducing Flash introductory page; and links that start the download of unexpectedly large portable document format files without warning.

This article provides information on the Web portal, DocuTicker. In 2004, Gary Price planned to spin off a new Weblog from his popular ResourceShelf. This one would be devoted, purely and simply, to identifying new reports from government agencies, trade associations, think tanks, non-governmental organizations, and other organizations that releases research studies, and position papers. Since then, DocuTicker has taken on a life of its own. DocuTicker is never lacking for sustenance. Substance, on the other hand, is a separate issue. From people who latch onto an interesting item and wonder where they can find similar material. And also from folks who feel that there are too much liberal stuff or too much conservative stuff posted at the site. DocuTicker does not have an ideological slant. Basically, they post anything that someone might want to read because the topic is current, it contains potentially useful statistics, and a helpful bibliography is included. However, DocuTicker does not include commentary from its contributors Internet.

This article discusses the benefits of Weblogs for library staff communication, and describes the steps to start an internal Weblog. An Internal Weblogs can be a way to reduce e-mail and paper clutter, a vehicle to share knowledge and experiences, a way to create buy-in for projects, a powerful communication tool, an easy way to create dynamic Web pages, and a method to make searchable archives. The first step in starting an internal Weblog is choosing and installing software, followed by planning and making policies. The third step is to train the staff members who will be using the Weblog. The final step is promoting the Weblog for staff awareness.

Produced by the OCLC Public Affairs Information Service, PAIS International includes references to more than 530,000 journal articles, books, government documents, statistical directories, gray literature, research reports, policy papers, Internet documents, Web sites, conference reports, and other sources from more than 120 countries. The database covers topics such as affirmative action, AIDS, climate change, environmental degradation, and war and conflict. Thomson Gale announced the launch of Science Resource Center, a new science database with content directly correlated to national and state science curriculum standards. The database includes three core proprietary references from Thomson Gale--Gale Encyclopedia of Science, Macmillan Science Library, and UXL Encyclopedia of Science--as well as 40 additional proprietary reference titles. Also included are links to full-text science magazines and journals, multimedia records, and Web sites.

The article features the PROMT database from Predicasts. There are new types of record added to the PROMT database, including annual reports, news releases, brokerage form reports, Securities and Exchange Commission new corporate filings. The only flaw of the PROMT database is its Full Text feature. Most of the records of PROMT maintain their conventional form, which features a citation and long abstract with Predicast codes and descriptors.
