The extra-LC auxiliary-resonant-snubber-based converter (ELCARSC), as a soft-switching converter, has the advantages of low switching loss, low electromagnetic interference noise, and low-output distortion caused by the dead-time effect. However, the dead-time effect is still the main problem in a high-precision application. Besides, the traditional control and compensation methods rely on the accuracy of the circuit parameters, especially the junction capacitance, thus resulting in compensation error. Therefore, this paper proposed a novel high-precision control method through modulating the initial resonant current to eliminate the dead-time effect of ELCARSC. The method does not need complicated online calculation and reduces the dependence on the accuracy of the circuit parameters, especially the influence of the junction capacitances of the switches. In this paper, the dead-time effect of the ELCARSC is analyzed. The output voltage error with the conventional variable-timing control method is analyzed. Subsequently, the proposed modulated initial resonant current control is introduced. Finally, a prototype was developed that verified the effectiveness of the control method. This paper presents the digital implementation of a boundary controller with unipolar switching characteristic for single-phase voltage source full-bridge inverters. This paper expands the application of a second-order switching surface-based control method to unipolar switching of single-phase voltage source inverters (VSIs) using a finite-state machine. The finite-state machine has been formulated considering four different states of the inverter; positive,zero1, negative, andzero2. The second-order boundary control governs the current state of the system and provides proper switching action to keep the system within the desired reference. The control law is implemented digitally in F28m35x digital control card. A full-bridge inverter topology is used to achieve the three-level voltage switching. Various simulations and experiments were performed in a 550 VA, 120 V, 60 Hz VSI with a digitally implemented controller to verify the theoretical predictions. A high-quality voltage output was obtained for various loading conditions. The transient performance of the controller was investigated using a reference and load changes. This paper proposes a new high-efficiency photovoltaic (PV) converter for grid connection through a high-leg delta transformer. The converter is composed of a symmetrically connected boost converter and three half-bridge inverters. One of the three half-bridge inverters is connected to the boost converter, and the others are directly connected to the PV terminals. As a result, this circuit configuration enables to reduce the power losses in both boost converter and inverters. This paper also proposes a new cooperative control method between the symmetrically connected boost converter and inverter. The control method can reduce the average switching frequency to 75% of that in a conventional one, resulting in a great reduction in the switching power loss. Experimental results confirm that the proposed circuit configuration makes it possible to improve its European efficiency from 91.6% to 94.5%. The pump-back test is widely adopted in the industry for characterizing and qualifying high-power converters. One popular pump-back test configuration is to tie the dc links of two converters together and circulate the current through the inductor connected between the ac terminals. In this configuration, one of the converters operates in the voltage mode to generate the virtual grid and the other converter regulates the circulating current, where hysteresis control could be applied. However, the switching characteristics of hysteresis control are unique due to the pulsewidth modulation type voltage being the virtual grid. This paper contributes to analyzing the switching frequency characteristics of the hysteresis control in this pump-back test configuration. The switching frequency tracking phenomenon is revealed and reported in this paper for the first time. This paper proposes generation of a 15-level (14 concentric) dodecagonal voltage space vector structure (DVSVS) for a star connected induction motor drive. The proposed multilevel DVSVS is obtained by cascading two inverters, namely a primary and secondary inverter. The primary inverter is a five-level (5L) structure formed by stacking two three-level flying capacitors with individual reduced dc sources and the secondary inverter is also a 5L structure formed by cascading two capacitor-fed cascaded H-bridges (CHB). The active power is supplied by the primary inverter, while the secondary inverter acts as switched capacitor harmonics filter, and capacitors in the secondary inverter are balanced naturally irrespective of load power factor for entire modulation index. The high-voltage dc supply fed primary inverter is operated in quasi-square wave mode, while the high frequency switching is applied to low voltage CHBs, thus, reducing the overall switching loss. The proposed scheme gives the advantages of both DVSVS and multilevel structure, thus, making it one of the solutions for battery or stacked dc-fed applications. To support the development of high-frequency ac microgrids in terms of compact design, high-voltage gain and low total harmonic distortion (THD), a buck–boost dual-leg-integrated step-up inverter is proposed in this paper. The inverter is formed by integrating a buck–boost converter into a conventional single-phase full-bridge inverter by sharing the upper switch and the body diode of the lower switch in both bridge-legs. Consequently, the component count is significantly reduced over the step-up inverter counterparts. In addition, to address the drawbacks of hybrid modulation methods adopted by existing dual-leg-integrated inverters, such as double-variable control, and high THD of output voltage/current at high input voltage and heavy load conditions, unipolar frequency doubling sinusoidal pulse width modulation scheme is adopted in this inverter. As a result, the modulation ratio M becomes the only control variable to regulate the output voltage/current and the control is simplified. The THD of the proposed inverter output can remain low throughout the entire input voltage range and load power range. This paper analyzes the combination in a cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (CHBI) based on transformers with the different turn ratios for increasing the voltage level and proposes the switching method for achieving the output voltage distribution among H-bridge cells (HBCs). The transformers used in this paper are connected to the output of the respective HBCs, and the secondary sides of all the transformers are connected in series for generating the final output voltage. Only one of the transformers, in particular, has a different turn ratio for increasing the output voltage level. In this paper, the possible turn ratio of the special transformer with a different turn ratio is discussed in detail, and a switching method based on the level-shifted switching method for the topology used in this paper is proposed. This paper proposes a current sensorless control strategy for the dual active bridge (DAB) converter with nonlinear disturbance observer (NDO)-based load current feedforward. The proposed method can regulate both the dc-bus voltage and the current of the DAB converter without current sensors. Several performance indexes are established for the parameter design and a detailed design method is presented in this paper. When a single-phase H-bridge inverter is connected, the double-frequency oscillation from the feedback path is suppressed by proper parameter design, while the transient response of dc-bus voltage can be further improved by the NDO-based load current feedforward with a notch filter in the feedforward path. Digital current controllers have the key impact on the performance of grid-side converters and ac drives. The voltage disturbances are commonly suppressed by enhancing the controller with an inner active resistance feedback. In cases where the switching noise and parasitic oscillations introduce sampling errors, conventional sampling is replaced by the oversampling-based error-free feedback acquisition which derives the average of the measured currents over the past switching period. The time delay introduced into the feedback path creates difficulties in designing the current controller with the active resistance. In this paper, we introduce a novel structure of the current controller, which includes the error-free sampling and the active resistance feedback. Devised structure improves the disturbance rejection by extending the range of permissible values of the active resistance. Controller structure is based on the internal model principles, and it maintains the input step response unaffected. In this paper, direct torque control (DTC) of five-phase induction motor (FPIM) is implemented using three-level neutral point clamped (TL-NPC) inverter. One of the advantages of three-level inverter over two-level one for DTC operation is the low torque ripple. Also TL-NPC inverter through space vector modulation technique gives low $ dv/dt$ transition with better voltage waveform. By applying conventional lookup table for DTC, the TL-NPC inverter does not ensures lower $dv/dt$ transition. In this paper, a novel switching scheme for DTC of FPIM using TL-NPC inverter is proposed that ensures the low $ dv/dt$ transition and balancing of dc-link capacitor voltages of TL-NPC inverter. To form the lookup table for DTC operation, instead of using voltage vectors directly, virtual vectors (VVs) are utilized. Two switching states are used in one sample time to generate a VV in $\alpha \beta$ plane, which gives zero resultant voltage in $ xy$ plane. The switching strategy ensures low number of transitions to reduce the switching losses. The switching state redundancies are used in a novel way to balance the dc-link capacitor voltages without using any additional hardware. This paper proposes and validates model predictive control as an alternative control strategy for H-bridgeneutral-point-clamped (H-NPC) converters for single-phase grid-tied string photovoltaic (PV) systems. The presented control scheme achieves good quality current waveforms with unity power factor, dc-link voltage control, and neutral-point voltage minimization. Furthermore, the predictive controller has been further enhanced by including an average device switching frequency restriction and a $dv/dt$ mitigation. The main contribution of this paper is the avoidance of the potential leakage current due to parasitic capacitance of the PV modules by using a predictive model based control technique instead of modulated schemes and eliminating high-frequency common-mode voltage components. This paper proposes an effective sliding mode controller (SMC) for a grid-connected 7-level packed U-cell (PUC7) inverter. The aim is to design a simple controller that deals effectively with the complex control problem of the PUC7 inverter (multiobjective control problem). The selection of the control actions is achieved according to the system state error at every sampling time, regardless of the previous values, which makes the control technique model-independent. The control algorithm evaluates online two cost functions (one for each state error), which are derived on the basis of sliding mode theory, and it selects the optimal control input in order to satisfy the reaching conditions of the two cost functions. Compared with the existing solutions, the proposed SMC technique ensures lower average switching frequency by tuning the hysteresis bandwidth of the capacitor-voltage error. The fast implementation, needless of gains tuning, and simple design procedure are the main features of the proposed algorithm. Recent technical advances in control, protection and interconnection of distributed power generation units imply that it is practically viable and economically profitable to keep them as backup generators in isolated operating modes. Therefore, along with the development of islanding detection techniques, seamless operation in transition between islanded and grid connected modes is required and more sophisticated control strategies are needed to recognize the existing working condition and adjust the performance to meet the strict standards of grid interconnection. This paper presents a new adaptive control structure, based on internal model control (IMC), which uses multiple models and an inherent islanding detection method through an optimized switching mechanism to tune the operation of a three-phase inverter under transitions between islanded and grid-tied conditions. By applying a power synchronization method, the system emulates the operation of a synchronous machine which is needless to rely on a phase-locked loop to synchronize during the transitions. Hardware co-simulation environment in Simulink/PLECS and Xilinx System Generator have been utilized to evaluate the transient behavior of the controller in discretized domain and verify its robustness during parameter variations and load switching conditions. Various switching rules have been applied and a comparison of their effect in transient response is demonstrated. Reliability of power systems can be improved by the use of voltage source inverters (VSIs) with fast dynamic control, which can handle uncertainties induced by renewable energy resources and nonlinear loads. To ensure fast-dynamic response and simplified controller design, various model predictive control (MPC) methods are investigated in this paper. In the conventional MPC design for three-level VSIs, the cost function requires an additional term to ensure the balance of the neutral-point voltage (NP-V), which however can considerably impact the main goal of the MPC. To address this issue, an enhanced MPC using virtual space vectors is proposed, which allows the use of a significantly reduced weighting factor for the term in the cost function for NP-V balancing, while retaining fast-dynamic response. Additionally, the proposed MPC leads to reduced harmonic distortion in the VSI output voltage and current. Both simulation and controller hardware-in-the-loop studies are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed enhanced MPC in an operating microgrid under both steady-state and fast-transient conditions. Three-level inverter has an outstanding performance and is more advantageous in the switching vector selection than two-level inverter. In particular, the neutral-point voltage unbalance and common-mode voltage (CMV) reduction of three-level inverter should be carefully regulated for the appropriate operation, both of which, however, are mutually coupled resulting that the conventional space vector modulation (SVM) scheme cannot deal with them properly. To overcome this limitation, this paper proposes an improved space vector modulation (ISVM) technique to reduce the CMV and neutral-point voltage imbalance simultaneously. The generating mechanism of neutral-point voltage oscillation is derived. Based on the analysis, the proposed ISVM method adopts four voltage vectors (large, medium, small, and zero vectors) with adjusted dwell times to eliminate the ac unbalance of the neutral-point voltage. Considering the occurrence of neutral-point voltage disturbances, the dc neutral-point unbalance voltage is controlled by selecting the P-type or N-type small vector and adjusting the dwell times of small vectors for neutral-point voltage recovery. In addition, a novel switching sequence arrangement method with the minimal number of switches transition in one switching cycles and between switching cycles is proposed to reduce the total switching loss. Theoretical analysis and verification results show that the proposed ISVM scheme can reduce the magnitude of CMV to half of value using the conventional SVM, and an accurate control of ac and dc unbalanced neutral-point voltage can be obtained. In this paper, a new space vector pulse width modulation method to extend the linear modulation range of a cascaded five level inverter topology with a single dc supply is presented. Using this method, the inverter can be controlled linearly and the peak phase fundamental output voltage of the inverter can be increased from 0.577 to 0.637 V\text{dc} without increasing the dc bus voltage and without exceeding the induction motor voltage rating. This new technique makes use of cascaded inverter pole voltage redundancy and property of the space vector structure for its operation. Using this, the induction motor drive can be operated till the full speed range (0–50 Hz) with the elimination of lower order harmonics in the phase voltage and phase current. Zero-common-mode-voltage (CMV) operation of multilevel inverters results in reduced dc-bus utilization and reduced linear modulation range. In this paper, a method to increase the linear modulation range for zero-CMV operation without increasing the dc-bus voltage using a cascaded multilevel inverter with a single dc supply is presented. Using this method, the peak fundamental output voltage can be increased from 0.499 to 0.637  \textV\text{dc} with zero CMV inside the linear modulation range. Also, various pulse width modulation (PWM) switching sequences are analyzed in this paper, and the PWM sequence that gives minimum current ripple is used for the zero-CMV operation of the inverter. This paper presents a model predictive control technique applied to a dual-active bridge inverter where one of the bridges is floating. The proposed floating bridge topology eliminates the need for isolation transformer in a dual inverter system and therefore reduces the size, weight, and losses in the system. To achieve multilevel output voltage waveforms, the floating inverter dc-link capacitor is charged to the half of the main dc-link voltage. A finite-set model predictive control technique is used to control the load current of the converter as well as the floating capacitor voltage. Model predictive control does not require any switching sequence design or complex switching time calculations as used for space vector modulation; thus, the technique has some advantages in this application. This paper presents a three-phase open-end winding induction motor drive. The drive consists of a three-phase induction machine with open stator phase windings and dual-bridge inverter supplied from a single dc voltage source. To achieve multilevel output voltage waveforms, a floating capacitor bank is used for the second of the dual bridges. The capacitor voltage is regulated using redundant switching states at half of the main dc-link voltage. This particular voltage ratio (2:1) is used to create a multilevel output voltage waveform with three levels. A modified modulation scheme is used to improve the waveform quality of this dual inverter. This paper also compares the losses in the dual-inverter system in contrast with a single-sided three-level neutral point clamped converter. The carrier-based pulsewidth modulation (CBPWM) and virtual space vector pulsewidth modulation (VSVPWM) for neutral point clamped three-level converter are reviewed briefly in this paper. A novel modulation strategy is proposed to maintain unconditional neutral point voltage balance under the full range of power factor and modulation index. The proposed PWM strategy is featured with three switching actions in one switching cycle, which is named 3SNPBPWM hereafter. In 3SNPBPWM, one phase is clamped to a certain level without switching action, and the other two phases have one and two switching actions in one switching cycle (SC), respectively. Moreover, a neutral point voltage recovery algorithm for 3SNPBPWM is also proposed. The performance of 3SNPBPWM is analyzed and compared with CBPWM and VSVPWM in terms of switching loss, waveform quality, and ability of neutral point voltage recovery. This paper presents a novel model predictive control (MPC) for the T-type single-phase three-level inverters. The cumbersome procedure in tuning of weighting factors is eliminated so that the implementation of the proposed MPC becomes easy. The constant switching frequency is achieved during the control implementation in order to facilitate the filter design. In order to optimize the distribution of the output current harmonics, multiple voltage vectors are employed in each control cycle with their application times setting inversely proportion to the respective cost function. The redundant small voltage vectors are utilized to balance the neutral point voltage of the inverter by directly regulating the upper and lower dc-link capacitors voltages. Finally, the proposed MPC algorithm is experimentally evaluated and compared with other two unfixed switching frequency MPC algorithms in terms of the steady state, transient performance, and parameter sensitivity. When fast voltage control is used in a power factor control, the ripple of the dc link causes current harmonics. This paper proposes a method to reduce the harmonic content of a fast voltage loop in a power factor correction, which can both produce low distortion during steady-state operation and fast recovery from a load transient. The performance is achieved by using a Takagi–Sugeno-type nonlinear controller for dc-link voltage control. The proposed nonlinear control is compared with linear proportional–integral (PI) control, which is tuned to meet the standardized regulations for the harmonic content in a 3-kW single phase power supply. The results show that the presented nonlinear voltage controller can maintain the dynamic performance of the linear control with reduced current harmonics. This paper introduces a new configuration of bidirectional multilevel converter in electric vehicle (EV) applications. It has multilevel dc–dc converter with a dc link capacitor voltage balance feature. The multilevel dc–dc converter operates in a bidirectional manner, which is a fundamental requirement in EVs. Compared to the conventional configurations, the proposed one only implements two extra power switches and a capacitor to balance the voltage of the T-type multilevel inverter (MLI) capacitor over a complete drive cycle or at fault conditions. Therefore, no extra isolated sensor, control loops, and/or special switching pattern are required. Moreover, the proposed configuration due to the high-frequency cycle-by-cycle voltage balance between ${C_N}$ and ${C_P}$ , the bulky electrolytic capacitors used in T-type MLI, are replaced with more reliable longer life film capacitors. This will result in a size and weight reduction of the converter by 20%. This allows more real estate for the EV battery in the chassis’ space envelope to increase its capacity. The new IEEE 1547-2018 standard includes dynamic Volt/VAr control for photovoltaic (PV) smart inverters. While recent research has addressed the problem of optimal inverter dispatch, the interaction between inverters and the classical Volt/VAr control (VVC) regulation system needs further study. This paper proposes an approach that builds on the classical VVC solution with PVs, by computing for each inverter a rule that modulates the smart inverter reactive power in function of its real power. Two approaches are presented for computing the inverter's reactive power equation slope: the first approach is based on the robust minimization of the absolute voltage magnitude deviation via a linear program, whereas the second approach yields closed-form solutions inspired from distributionally robust chance constraints. Numerical results are presented on weakly meshed distribution networks having up to 3146 nodes; they demonstrate that the voltage violations due to intermittent real power variations are significantly reduced by the decision rules as compared to maintaining the last computed VVC set-points, even when the inverters operate at constant power factor or with default Volt/VAr settings proposed in the literature; additionally, the reactive power decision rules maintain a network loss level that is close to the average from a centralized solution. This paper proposes a switching strategy for the Z-source inverter (ZSI), which has unequal short-through intervals to reduce the current ripple in the inductor of its impedance source. A size reduction of the inductor of the ZSI is one of the important issues in improving the power density of the ZSI, and the inductor current ripple reduction is required to achieve it. The proposed method can reduce the inductor current ripple by 27.8% compared with the conventional method that has equal short-through intervals without increasing the number of inverter switching. The proposed operation and ripple reduction were confirmed in experiments with a 3-kW-class laboratory prototype. This paper presents a five-phase dual random space vector pulsewidth modulation (FPDR-SVPWM) strategy with an optimized probability density function (PDF) for a five-phase voltage-source inverter, and its performance and evaluation are also analyzed. Based on the nearest four vectors modulation method, the FPDR-SVPWM strategy, combined with random switching frequency and random zero vector, is investigated to significantly reduce the amplitude of high-order harmonics near the switching frequency and its integer multiples. For the nonsinusoidal power supply, third harmonic injection is introduced in this modulation strategy as well. Considering the effect of random numbers on the performance, an optimized Beta distribution is studied in detail. In order to analyze harmonic dispersion degree qualitatively and quantitatively, the power spectral density and the harmonic spread factor are both employed to assess the performance of the FPDR-SVPWM strategy. A series of results of simulation in MATLAB and experiments based on field programmable gate array demonstrate that the proposed modulation strategy is correct and valid, and it distributes high-order harmonics into a wide range without affecting the fundamental wave and third harmonic. To reduce the common-mode voltage (CMV) and eliminate the CMV spikes for two-level voltage source inverters (2L-VSIs), an improved model predictive control (MPC) based CMV reduction method is proposed in this paper considering dead-time effects. First, an improved voltage vector (VV) preselection strategy is proposed to reduce the CMV spikes caused by the dead time. Second, a new hybrid VV preselection strategy based on a delay compensation strategy and a modified current sector division strategy is proposed to completely eliminate the CMV spikes. As the proposed hybrid VV preselection based MPC strategy makes full use of the six nonzero VVs of the 2L-VSI, the current total harmonic distortions and ripples are reduced. In this paper, a fixed switching frequency model predictive current controller is designed and implemented on a sensorless five-level packed U-cell (PUC5) inverter interfacing the utility. The predictive control methodology is based on a voltage vector generation technique for the cost function optimization by nullifying its derivative. The aim of the controller is to allow a fixed-frequency operation with no iterations while operating as a utility line current regulator. A pulsewidth modulator based on employing PUC5 redundant switching states fixes the PUC5 auxiliary dc bus capacitor voltage to its desired level with no necessity of a regulator; the overall technique reduces system complexity with less sensors and no loops in the predictive algorithm making it suitable for industrial applications. Recently, a few fault-tolerant control strategies have been proposed for T-type three-level inverters to improve the reliability of the inverter system. However, the neutral-point (NP) voltage oscillations suppression is never considered in the previous fault-tolerant control strategies. In order to suppress the NP voltage oscillations when open-circuit fault occurs to NP switches, this paper proposes two novel fault-tolerant control strategies named as improved two-level switching tolerant control and hybrid switching tolerant control (HS-TC). Both methods are implemented by adding an optimal time-offset to the three-phase turn-ontimes. The corresponding time-offset value of each method is simply calculated considering the phase current and dwell time of [O] state. Moreover, an NP voltage balancing algorithm to eliminate the dc deviation and a dc bias to further reduce the NP voltage oscillations are used in the HS-TC. The performance and comparison of the tolerant controls with respect to the NP voltage oscillations, current total harmonic distortion, and dynamic response are illustrated and analyzed through the simulation and experimental results. An isolated single sourced multi-output dc/dc converter with a high-frequency link was proposed before to feed different cells of the Asymmetrical Cascaded H-bridge (ACHB) inverter. One of the fundamental advantages of the ACHB is that the main H-bridge is commutated with fundamental frequency, passing the majority of the inverter power. However, the isolated dc/dc converter needs to be connected to the main voltage source with high-voltage/high-frequency switches, which limits the power capability and the efficiency of the converter. In this paper, a switching pattern based on nearest level modulation method is proposed to command all the power to be transferred through the main H-bridge. Therefore, the power circulates between the auxiliary H-bridges with no need for high-voltage switches. As a result, a single-input single-output auxiliary converter is needed with only 5% of the power rating. This solution reduces cost and size while it improves the efficiency of the converter. Furthermore, the architecture makes the inverter more suitable for high power and high-voltage applications. The inverter switching strategy is based on programmable firing angles. The main dc-link of the grid connected inverter is controlled to achieve maximum power point tracking, while the dc/dc isolated converter is controlled to regulate the auxiliary dc-links. A 1-φ hybrid nine-level inverter (H9LI) topology has been proposed in this paper. The proposed H9LI topology uses a simple phase disposition pulsewidth modulation strategy to generate nine-voltage levels in the output. The main advantage of this topology is that it has a low switch count (ten switches) compared to the existing nine-level inverter topologies. To regulate the voltage across auxiliary capacitor, two innovative control techniques are proposed, which are integrated with the inverter modulation technique itself. Hence, it does not require any extra voltage balancing circuits to maintain the voltage across the auxiliary capacitor and input dc capacitors. A major advantage of these control techniques is that they eliminate the sensing of the coupled inductor current. Another significant advantage of H9LI is that loss distribution among all the power switches is more uniform compared to existing nine-level inverters. Due to low part count and absence of extra voltage balancing circuits, the H9LI achieves higher efficiency (η ≍ 94.5%) and lower cost. Furthermore, the requirement of filter size reduces due to the presence of coupled inductor in H9LI. In this paper, capacitor current sensorless control by using an observer is applied in a seamless transfer single-phase inverter. The proposed control system is a multiloop control system. The control loop is composed of a capacitor voltage outer control loop and capacitor current inner control loop for stand-alone mode. For on-grid mode, the grid current outer loop controller is combined with the stand-alone control structure to form a simple controller structure for mode switching. The capacitor current feedback signal is calculated using the observer in the discrete-time domain and thus sensors are not required. Use of the proposed observer for the inverter with capacitor current control has many advantages, such as sensorless capacitor current calculation, one-sample-ahead data prediction for sampling delay compensation, and an average capacitor current without ripple components. Verification of the theoretical analysis is presented through simulation and experiment. A 5-kW single-phase inverter prototype combined with a Li-ion battery is set up with a digital controller using a TI TMS320F28377D microcontroller unit to confirm the feasibility of the system. Individual microgrids have proven their ability to provide uninterrupted power to critical end-use loads during severe events. Building on the performance of individual microgrids during extreme events, there has been an increasing interest in the operations of network microgrids. By networking microgrids during extreme events, it is possible to share resources, increase the duration for which they can operate islanded, improve efficiency, and increase the resiliency of critical end-use loads. While there are benefits to networking the operations of resiliency-based microgrids, the switching operations that they require introduce transients, which can result in a loss of dynamic stability. The issue of dynamic stability is especially acute in microgrids with high penetrations of inverter-connected generation, and correspondingly low system inertia. While the low inertia of these microgrids can be increased by over-sizing the rotating generators, the increased capital and operating costs can become a barrier to deployment. This paper will present a method of augmenting primary frequency controls to support the switching transients necessary for the operation of networked microgrids, without the need to over-size rotating machines. In this paper, a novel space-vector pulsewidth modulation technique for a five-level active neutral-point clamped (5L-ANPC) inverter is proposed to eliminate the common-mode voltage (CMV). For the 5L-ANPC inverter, which produces a good output voltage performance and lowdv/dt, the total 125 voltage vectors can be generated, among which the proposed scheme employs only 19 voltage vectors producing a zero CMV. Due to the limitation of voltage vectors selected, the dc-link capacitor voltages of the 5L-ANPC inverter cannot be balanced by themselves. Therefore, the capacitor voltages of the inverter should be controlled by choosing the redundant switching states appropriately. This paper proposes a control method for a five-level hybrid flying-capacitor (5L-HFC) inverter, of which structure stems from the conventional five-level active neutral-point-clamped (5L-ANPC) topology by dividing the dc-link stage into three series-connected capacitors. In this inverter, the voltage stress on the power switches connected to the dc link is reduced by a half compared with that of the 5L-ANPC topology, thus the lower number of equally voltage-rated power devices can be employed. Also, the power losses in the 5L-HFC inverter are more evenly distributed than in the 5L-ANPC. In order to balance the dc-link capacitor voltages, a third-order harmonic offset injection is applied. When a diode rectifier is used to supply the dc bus voltage, the balancing method is not effective if the modulation index is higher than 0.64. Thus, an auxiliary circuit is needed to support the balancing of the dc-link capacitor voltages. However, the unbalancing problem can be overcome in a full-range operation without the auxiliary circuit if the back-to-back configuration is utilized. This paper proposes the new clamping angle control (CAC) pulse width modulation (PWM) method to restore its maximum linear modulation range of voltage source inverters (VSIs) reduced by the duty ratio limitation in hardware implementation, which makes the VSIs to operate nonlinearly in the high modulation range. The deadtime and the bootstrap gate driver circuit mainly cause this duty ratio limitation in practice. In particular, the bootstrap gate driver circuit is used in many industrial applications by avoiding the additional power supply to apply the gate-source voltage of power switches, and therefore making the VSIs to be small size with the low cost. First, the proposed CACPWM method is theoretically analyzed. Then, it is applied in the high modulation range to overcome the limitation of the duty ratio due to the use of the bootstrap gate driver circuit. An adaptive control of DPWM implementable in clamped-three-level inverters with two strings of photovoltaic (PV) panels in cascaded connection is proposed in this paper. The proposed modulation is developed based on the so-called circuit-level decoupling concept. It is able to provide balance line voltage even under unbalanced dc links. The unequal dc voltages appeared due to asymmetric maximum point of power trackings (MPPTs) are controlled by proper injection of zero-sequence voltage to the common mode voltage, while the total dc voltage is regulated based on the voltage commands generated by the MPPT of each string. Thus, both PV strings are able to be operated based on their MPPTs while there is almost no low-order harmonic distortion at the inverter output current. In this paper, a three-level quasi-switched boost T-type inverter (3L qSBT2I) is proposed. A new pulse-width modulated (PWM) control method is presented to reduce the inductor current ripple of the qSBT2 I. In the introduced PWM technique, the shoot-through duty cycle is maintained constant to keep the modulation index as high as possible. Then, the only control parameters of the qSBT2I are the duty cycles of the two additional switches. By controlling the duty cycles of the two additional switches, the voltage gain of the proposed qSBT2 I can be improved to a value larger than that of the conventional 3L impedance source inverters. The steady-state analysis, operating principles, and comparisons with the impedance source-based 3L inverters are presented. A 1-kW prototype is constructed to verify the operating principle of the 3L qSBT2I. This paper investigates a multilevel inverter composed of series/parallel-connected H-bridges. The presented structure can be used for applications in which the use of semiconductor switches with low-voltage and low-current ratings is intended. A comprehensive system model, an overall control strategy to adjust the output voltage with constant magnitude and frequency, and a level-shifted PWM (LS-PWM) strategy based on a voltage vectors unidimensional analysis and a plane analysis are presented. The LS-PWM is capable of mitigating the low-frequency circulating current, thus generating multilevel voltage signals with low harmonic distortion, maximum number of levels, and low dv/dt. In addition, considering a wide range of values of voltages and currents and various power levels, the total converter losses are reduced compared with the conventional multilevel converters. An optimal current control strategy for asymmetrical hybrid multilevel inverters (MLIs) is proposed in this paper enabling their use on motor drives, static synchronous compensators, and photovoltaic and wind generators, where a fast and precise current regulation is required. A key feature of these highly efficient converters is that an ac machine (motor or transformer) operates according to an open-end winding configuration, connected on one side to a main MLI and, on the other side, to an auxiliary two-level inverter (TLI). The first efficiently controls the main power stream operating at a low switching frequency, while the TLI acts as an active power filter, exploiting a conventional high-frequency two-level pulsewidth modulation (PWM) technique. The proposed control scheme optimally exploits the key features of the two inverters by suitably sharing the control task. In fact, a predictive current control is assigned to the MLI, which can be accomplished by low switching frequency operations, while the high switching frequency of the PWM-operated TLI is exploited to accomplish a fast and precise closed-loop current control, processing only a part of the power stream flowing through the system, thus producing low power losses. Microinverters operating into the single-phase grid from new energy source with low-voltage output face the challenges of efficiency bottleneck and twice-line-frequency variation. This paper proposed a multilevel inverter based on bridge modular switched-capacitor (BMSC) circuits with its superiority in conversion efficiency and power density. The topology is composed of dc–dc and dc–ac stages with independent control for each stage, aiming to improve system stability and simplify the control method. The BMSC dc–dc stage, which can be expanded to synthesize more levels, not only features multilevel voltage gain but also partially replaces the original bulk input capacitor and functions as an active energy buffer to enhance power-decoupling ability between dc and ac sides. In dc–ac stage, the control strategy of optimized unipolar frequency doubling sine-wave pulse width modulation is proposed to improve the quality of output waveform. Meanwhile, the multilevel voltage phase has been optimized to further reduce the power loss. Finally, a prototype has been built and tested. Three-phase three-leg inverter is one of the most popular topologies for inverters. When short-circuit fault occurs, the inverter is generally switched to the current-controlled mode from voltage-controlled mode to limit the fault currents. In this situation, the inverter becomes equivalent to a symmetric, three-phase, positive sequence current source. However, the voltage limiting may occur under asymmetrical fault. In this paper, a closed-loop model based on time-domain is originally developed as a means to investigate the fault current characteristics under asymmetrical fault. Based on the proposed model, a more intuitive insight into fault currents is presented as follows. 1) The positive sequence fundamental component of three-phase currents can still track the symmetric current references. 2) The magnitude of fault phase currents (ignoring the harmonics) will vary between 1 and $\sqrt 3 $ times of magnitude of current limiting references. Based on the conclusion, although the magnitudes of fault phase currents can be reduced by adopting smaller current limiting references, the actual magnitudes of fault phase currents will still vary in a range depending on the load impendence of healthy phase. Therefore, the reliable action of the protection devices is greatly affected and the selective protection cannot be realized. Furthermore, in order to achieve completely controllable fault currents under asymmetrical fault, two alternative current limiting strategies are presented with reverse current limiting references, and with current limiting references based on the introduced phase angle regulation. A new pulsewidth modulation (PWM) strategy which is an alternative approach of the discontinuous PWM (DPWM) for a three-level neutral-point-clamped (NPC) inverter is proposed in this paper. A three-level NPC inverter is completely mature and very well-established topology in high-power applications. However, the three-level NPC inverter has an inheritance problem of the neutral-point voltage unbalancing due to the split dc-link capacitors. This structure can cause large neutral-point voltage ripple. Furthermore, output currents of the three-level NPC inverter are distorted by the neutral-point voltage ripple. Therefore, the neutral-point voltage must be controlled. This paper presents a new application of power and voltage balance control schemes for the cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter (CHMI)-based solid-state transformer (SST) topology. To reduce load on the controller and simplify modulation algorithm, a master–slave control (MSC) strategy is designed for the dual active bridge (DAB) stage. The master controller executes all control and modulation calculations, and the slave controllers manage only device switching and protection. Due to the inherent power and dc-link voltage unbalance in cascaded H-bridge-based SST, this paper presents a compensation strategy based on three-phase dq decoupled current controller. An optimum zero-sequence component is injected in the modulation scheme so that the three-phase grid currents are balanced. Furthermore, to tightly regulate the output voltage of all the DAB modules to target value, a dynamic reference voltage method is also implemented. With this proposed control method, the three-phase grid currents and dc-link voltage in each module can be simultaneously balanced. In this paper, a modulation and control method for the new transformerless unified power flow controller (UPFC) is presented. As is well known, the conventional UPFC that consists of two back-to-back inverters requires bulky and often complicated zigzag transformers for isolation and reaching high power rating with desired voltage waveforms. To overcome this problem, a completely transformerless UPFC based on an innovative configuration of two cascade multilevel inverters has been proposed. The new UPFC offers several advantages over the traditional technology, such as transformerless, light weight, high efficiency, low cost and fast dynamic response. This paper focuses on the modulation and control for this new transformerless UPFC, including optimized fundamental frequency modulation for low total harmonic distortion and high efficiency, independent active and reactive power control over the transmission line, dc-link voltage balance control, etc. The new UPFC with proposed control method is verified by experiments based on 4160-V test setup. This paper presents an improved dc-link voltage balancing algorithm for a three-level neutral-point-clamped inverter by considering phase current direction. Detailed studies on the effects of change in load current direction on the dc-link capacitor voltages are presented. A maximum value of power factor is numerically derived, above which it affects the capacitor voltage balancing capability. Compared with the previously presented research work, the inputs to the space-vector pulsewidth-modulation block are the three phase currents and the difference between the two capacitor voltages. Depending on the states of the two dc-link capacitor voltages and phase current direction, redundant voltage vector sequences are selected. The selected vectors keep the capacitor voltage deviations within 5% of the total dc-link voltage. Two zero switching vectors (i.e., PPP and NNN) are also removed from all subsectors of the earlier proposed strategy, which one used to produce higher common-mode voltages. Detailed simulation and experimental results are presented in this paper for a 6.0-kW surface permanent-magnet synchronous machine. In order to solve the neutral-point voltage unbalancing problem for three-level inverters, this paper proposes a method to balance the neutral-point voltage for three-level inverters with variable modulation wave offset sinusoidal pulse-width modulation (SPWM) control. Based on the mathematical expressions of neutral-point voltage unbalancing, the factors are studied, which affect the fluctuation of neutral-point voltage. Theoretically the mathematical expressions of the neutral-point voltage with the proposed method are derived, and the mathematical relationship between the fluctuation of neutral-point voltage and the adjusting offset of modulation wave is studied. This proposed method realizes controlling the neutral-point voltage balance by dynamically calculating the offset superimposed to the modulation wave based on SPWM (DCOSPWM). This DCOSPWM method is very simple, which has good steady-state performance and is easy for digital implementation. The simulation results verify the correctness of the theoretical analysis in this paper, and the feasibility and effectiveness of this method is verified by the experiments in the experimental platform of neutral point clamped three-level inverters based on digital signal processor (DSP)-complex programmable logic device (CPLD). According to the number of segments, the space vector modulation (SVM) can divide into conventional SVM sequence (CSVMS) and special SVM sequence (SSVMS). It is well known that SVM can be equivalently realized by carrier-based pulse width modulation (CBPWM) with a zero component injection in both two-level and three-level inverters. For eight segment CSVMS in three-level inverters, many papers have ever got the injected zero component equation. But similar approach does not work for SSVMS, which has more than eight segments, e.g., 10, 12, or 14. What more, the accurate injected zero component has never been achieved so far. To solve above problems, therefore, a generated decomposition method of modulation wave has been proposed in this paper. By strict theoretical derivation, the same correlation can be extended to SSVMS and the corresponding zero component expression can be acquired. Based on this method, this paper puts a lot attention on the essential feature explanation, mathematical proof, and gives a detailed process to get the zero component equation, using it can realize SSVMS by CBPWM. In this paper, we propose model predictive control methods to reduce the common-mode voltage of three-phase voltage source inverters (VSIs). In the reduced common-mode voltage-model predictive control (RCMV-MPC) methods proposed in this paper, only nonzero voltage vectors are utilized to reduce the common-mode voltage as well as to control the load currents. In addition, two nonzero voltage vectors are selected from the cost function at every sampling period, instead of using only one optimal vector during one sampling period. The two selected nonzero vectors are distributed in one sampling period in such a way as to minimize the error between the measured load current and the reference. Without utilizing the zero vectors, the common-mode voltage controlled by the proposed RCMV-MPC algorithms can be restricted within ±Vdc/6. Furthermore, application of the two nonzero vectors with optimal time sharing between them can yield satisfactory load current ripple performance without using the zero vectors. Thus, the proposed RCMV-MPC methods can reduce the common-mode voltage as well as control the load currents with fast transient response and satisfactory load current ripple performance compared with the conventional model predictive control method. This paper proposes a novel bidirectional inverter, named series ac-link inverter. This three-phase inverter belongs to a new class of partial resonant ac-link converters in which the link is formed by a series ac inductor/capacitor (LC) pair having low reactive ratings. The input and output of this converter can be either dc, ac, single-phase, or multiphase. Therefore, they can appear as dc–dc, dc–ac, ac–dc, and ac–ac configurations. In all of these configurations, the ac capacitor is the main energy-storage element, and the inductor is merely added to facilitate the zero-current turnoff of the switches and their soft turn-on. Due to the zero-current turnoff of the switches in the proposed converter, the use of SCRs with natural commutation is possible as well. Since the current and voltage of the link are both alternating, no bulky dc-electrolytic capacitors are required in this converter. This paper mainly focuses on bidirectional dc to three-phase ac conversion. This single-stage inverter can step up or step down the voltage in a wide range. If galvanic isolation is required a single-phase high-frequency transformer can be added to the link. In the proposed inverter, the power can flow in both directions, and therefore, it is an excellent candidate for battery-utility interface and electric vehicle applications.
