THE NEW YORK TIMES is the closest thing we have in this country to a ''newspaper of record.'' A year ago I suggested that the paper should do a better job, therefore, of maintaining a record of the articles it publishes. Because of the swift changes wrought by the Internet, I observed, Times articles drift out into digital space in multiple versions. Some articles disappear altogether. At the time, the newsroom's management told me that establishing a stronger historical record by tracking changes in articles and keeping them in a comprehensive archive was not a priority. LONDON -- In his 60 years in the newspaper business, few moments can have been as charged for Rupert Murdoch as the one he seems likely to confront on Friday when he is scheduled to visit the London headquarters of his British newspaper arm, News International, where reporters and editors are said to be in a state of civil war against Mr. Murdoch and his executives. Scotland Yard jolted the Murdoch empire when it mounted dawn raids last weekend on the homes of five senior newsroom staff members from The Sun tabloid who were questioned on accusations of paying police officers and other public officials for leaking confidential information for the paper's scoops. An article on Sept. 8 about a bar in Queens that set off a conflict in its immigrant community when it raffled off a free same-sex wedding reception referred imprecisely to a statistic taken from The National Herald, which posed the question ''Do you approve of gay marriage?'' to its Greek-American readers. While 86 percent said they did not approve, that figure was based on about 1,000 readers who chose to answer the question when it was posted on the paper's Web site; the figure was not arrived at through a scientific ''poll'' in which The National Herald contacted readers. ASTANA, Kazakhstan -- On the eve of an election in which Kazakhstan's strongman leader hopes to improve his democratic credentials, a prominent opposition newspaper announced on Thursday that its publisher had suffered a severe beating and that his whereabouts were unknown. Maybe newspapers really are dying, as some media analysts have been predicting for decades, but apparently that does not apply to newspaper wars. A doozy is shaping up at the moment between The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. In an attempt to eat into The Times's mass-market audience and lure away some of its luxury advertisers, The Journal has already edged away from its traditional role as a national business paper, adding a daily sports page and a bimonthly magazine, strengthening foreign and Washington coverage and shifting the mix of articles on its front page. The former Soviet spy Aleksandr Y. Newspapers have tried many ways to cover the news with dwindling resources: dropping certain topics, having people do double duty, using more wire service work. Routine plagiarism is not usually an option, but a lawsuit contends that it was for a while at The Hartford Courant. The Journal Inquirer of Manchester, Conn., has sued The Courant, the state's largest paper, saying that it copied The Journal Inquirer's work in articles published last summer, a time when The Courant was also, in a subsequent admission, lifting material from several other northern Connecticut newspapers. As feuds go, this is not the biggest or most easily understood, but when a government agency uses phrases like ''hyperbole, fiction and innuendo,'' ''dark, dirty and poorly lit newsroom'' and ''dying medium'' to describe a newspaper, it is bound to get attention. After months of hunting for a buyer, The New York Times Company said on Wednesday that it had decided not to sell The Boston Globe, the newspaper it threatened last spring to close because of mounting losses. The Globe did not draw high bids, and the company chairman, Arthur Sulzberger Jr., said last month that the paper's finances had improved enough that the company no longer believed it had to sell if the offers were not attractive enough. The hostility between the Fox News Channel and its television news competitors, usually barely submerged, exploded into open recriminations Friday over a newspaper advertisement in which Fox accused its competitors of missing the story of the so-called antitax protests in Washington last Saturday. For decades, successful newspaper reporters and editors have looked forward to university fellowships as a chance to take a mid-career sabbatical and recharge their batteries. When The Philadelphia Inquirer hired as its new opinion columnist, John C. Readers of Sunday newspapers are more likely than other Americans to use coupons, according to a survey released recently by Scarborough Research, which measures consumer shopping habits.
