Background Ischemic stroke is among the most common and fatal diseases.. Apoptosis exerts a crucial role in ischemic stroke and heart disorders. The role of the circRNA associated with apoptosis in ischemic stroke was not fully elucidated. Methods Three datasets, GSE122709, GSE133768, and GSE110993, from the GEO database, were enrolled in bioinformatics analysis. The targeting miRNAs and mRNAs were predicted through the circBase and miRWalk database. The circRNA-miRNA-mRNA network was created by Cytoscape software. The ‘clusterProfiler’ R package was applied to execute GO and KEGG analysis. We constructed the SH-SY5Y oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) model to simulate ischemic stroke in vitro. RT-qPCR and western-blot was utilized to examine the expression level of corresponding genes. Cell Counting Kit-8 was utilized to assess cell viability. Flow cytometry was conducted for cell apoptosis analysis. Results Based on the data from public database, we finally created a circRNA-miRNA-mRNA network containing 143 nodes and 272 edges. In the network, the expression of CDKN1A (cyclin dependent kinase inhibitor 1A) was regulated by hsa-miR-17-5p, which is regulated by hsa-circ-0004622. Then, we verified the expression of CDKN1A, miR-17-5p, and circ-0004622 in SH-SY5Y OGD model. The result of functional experiment showed that circ-0004622 promoted apoptosis in ischemic stroke by regulating miR-17-5p. Conclusion Taken together, by bioinformatics methods and functional experiments, this study excavated and investigated the role of circ-0004622 in promoting cell apoptosis in ischemic stroke, providing a theoretical foundation for clinical diagnosis and elucidation of the molecular mechanism of ischemic stroke.

Primary hippocampal neuronal cells were used to establish cell model of cerebral ischemia under oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) treatment. After the cell model was pre-treated with short hairpin (sh)-circ_NLRP1 or mmu-miR-199b-3p inhibitor, LDH release and cell apoptosis were detected by LDH kit and TUNEL staining, respectively, while the expression of NLRP3 pyroptosis-related makers was analyzed through immunofluorescence (IF) assay and Western blot, respectively. The binding sites between circ_NLRP1 and mmu-miR-199b-3p were predicted and further validated by Dual Luciferase Reporter assay. Additionally, mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway was also analyzed by means of Western blot assay. Neuronal cells under OGD conditions released less lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and showed less apoptosis status by silencing circ_NLRP1. In addition, gasdermin D (GSDMD)-N immunofluorescence staining showed weaker fluorescence intensity and decreased expression of pyroptosis-related mediators. We further found that mmu-miR-199b-3p-inhibitor could alter the effects of sh-circ_NLRP1 on hippocampal neuronal cells. In addition, in this process, extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK)/EGR1 pathway was also significantly affected. In conclusion, OGD stimulation induced neuronal damage and pyroptosis through enhancing circ_NLRP1 expression and further downregulating mmu-miR-199b-3p levels. The present study provided a novel insight for understanding the potential mechanism of ischemia-induced neuronal damage and for developing new drugs for treating brain ischemia damage., Graphical Abstract

A balanced substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW) bandpass filter (BPF) is designed and fabricated based on through-quartz-via (TQV) technologies in this article. Sixth-order filtering response centered at 41.4 GHz with equal source and load termination is achieved by the transformation of the Chebyshev polynomial. By exploiting cross-coupled resonators, the 3-dB fractional bandwidth (FBW) achieves 12.1%, and the out-of-band rejection is better than 30 dB with frequencies up to $2f_{0}$ . High CM suppression can be achieved up to $2.2f_{0}$ with the help of two slots on the bottom metal layer. Based on the theory of the proposed SIW BPF, asymmetric diplexer with different resonance orders for two channels is studied with high isolation and wide stopband. The mixed dual-mode (TE101 and TE301) and single-mode (TE101) junction resonators provide a transition between the input port and two channels. Diplexer with lower and upper channels centered at 20.2 and 37.5 GHz, respectively, is fabricated and measured to verify the proposed structure, which exhibits high isolation better than 40 dB over the whole band and a wide stopband up to $3f_{0}$ of the lower channel. Measured results are in good agreement with the simulations.

This brief proposes a novel comparator to greatly increase its comparison speed while not degrading its noise performance. This comparator is well suited for high-speed high-resolution SAR ADCs. Its structure is based on the classic Miyahara’s two-stage comparator with the addition of only an extra charge pump. This simple modification greatly accelerates both the second-stage amplification phase and the regeneration phase, leading to significantly increased comparison speed. Meanwhile, the noise performance is not degraded, because the input pair transconductance of the second stage is increased while its integration time is decreased. For fair comparison, both the proposed comparator and the classic Miyahara’s comparator are implemented in the same 40nm CMOS process. Measurement results show that the proposed comparator speed is faster by 60% compared with the classic Miyahara’s comparator, while the input-referred noise is similar.

Depressive symptoms are prevalent in Chinese college students, but little is known about the heterogeneity in the developmental trajectory of depressive symptoms in China. This study examined heterogeneity in the development of depressive symptoms and examined the effect of gender on the developmental trajectories over a 14-month period among Chinese college students (N = 1163, mean age 20.18, 80.31% female). Three different trajectories, moderate-increasing, high-stable and low-stable, captured the heterogeneity in the development of depressive symptoms. Gender showed significant influence on class membership. Relative to the moderate-increasing class, males emerged as significantly more likely than females to be found in the low-stable class (odds ratio (OR) = 2.73, 95% CI = (1.21, 6.13), p = 0.015) and the high-stable class (OR = 5.10, 95% CI = (1.12, 23.18), p = 0.035). The results provide additional evidence for the conclusion that the trajectories of depressive symptoms are heterogeneous with Chinese samples. Moreover, cultural difference should be paid more attention to when examining the effect of gender and other predictors of the trajectories of depressive symptoms.

Herein, we synthesized high-performance SiO2–core quantum dot (QD)–shell nanocomposites (SiO2@PEI-QDs) using the polyethyleneimine (PEI)-mediated adsorption method. Cationic PEI was used to form a positively charged interlayer on the SiO2 core, which achieved a dense adsorption of carboxylated QDs to form a shell of QDs and maintained a good dispersibility of the nanocomposite. The SiO2@PEI-QDs showed excellent stability and high luminescence, and served as high-performance fluorescent labels for the detection of bacteria when used with the lateral flow immunoassay (LFA) technique. An SiO2@PEI-QD-based LFA strip was successfully applied to rapidly detect Salmonella typhimurium in milk samples with a low limit of 5 × 102 cells per mL.

BACKGROUND: ISR remains the major adverse outcome after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). MicroRNAs have been demonstrated to be associated with coronary plaque and stable in the blood and can be used as biomarkers/predictors. This study aimed to investigate whether circulating microRNAs could predict in-stent restenosis (ISR). METHODS: MicroRNA array was used to detect differently expressed microRNAs between 30 ISR patients and 30 non-ISR patients in the derivation cohort. Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) was used to validate the microRNA array results and to detect levels of target microRNAs in the validation cohort. All patients were followed up for at least 1 year, and major adverse cardiac events (MACEs) were recorded. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analysis were applied to find factors associated with ISR. Receiver operating characteristics (ROC) and Kaplan-Meier survival curves were used to analyze the predictive ability of the microRNA score for ISR. RESULTS: MicroRNA array and qRT-PCR showed that miR-143, 145, 425, 208, and let-7g were differently expressed between ISR patients and non-ISR patients. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that lower levels of mir-143 (OR =2.36, 95% CI: 1.43–3.67) and mir-145 (OR =2.12, 95% CI: 1.56–3.48) were associated with ISR. In this paper, an ultra-compact low-pass filter (LPF) with wide stopband is proposed based on lumped L-C structure in through-silicon via-based 3-D stacked configuration. The spiral inductor (L), interdigital capacitor (C), and the proposed LPF are theoretically analyzed based on parasitic parameters and equivalent circuit models. To evaluate the characteristics, the proposed LPF is simulated by HFSS, fabricated with CMOS-process-compatible technology, and measured with de-embedding method. Simulation and measured results are in good agreement. Compared with the other literature, the proposed LPF has the most compact size of $0.028\lambda _{g }\times 0.017 \lambda _{g}$ . ( $\lambda _{g}$ is the guide wavelength at $f_{c}$ .) With the cutoff frequency at 10.05 GHz, the filter has an insertion loss of 0.14 dB and reflection loss over 13 dB from dc to 9 GHz in the passband. The suppression levels are better than 20 dB from 20.4 up to 40 GHz in the stopband.

Malus sieversii(Ledeb.) M. Roem is a tertiary relict tree species and a rare and valuable resource for germplasm conservation. Since 1995, its wild forest has been severely destroyed by a devastating wood-boring beetle Agrilus mali Matsumura (Coleoptera: Buprestidae) in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, China. Where it invaded, this beetle infested more than 95% of the forests, and 80% of wild apple trees were reported dead in the hotspots. The physiological damage by A. mali infestation and their causality to tree death remain unclear. In this study, we attempted to explain the wild apple dieback from plant physiological perspectives, based on the hypothesis that the more damage M. sieversii suffered from the infestation of A. mali, the less water and fewer nutrients it could utilize. The study was conducted on trees with different extents of damage in wild apple forests over a large scale during 2016 and 2017. The stable carbon isotope ratio in leaves was analyzed to indicate tree water stress status. Total N, total P, total K, Ca2+ and Mg2+ were analyzed to reflect plant mineral nutrient status. The extent of damage was significantly associated with the leaf stable carbon isotope ratio in the drier year of 2016, but not significantly in 2017 with heavy rainfall in spring. The mineral nutrient contents of leaves were not significantly different among the four damage rankings in either year. The water stress experienced by M. sieversii was aggravated by the damage caused by A. mali, especially in a drought year, and indicates that the long-term water deficit caused by A. mali infestation may be the key factor leading to the decline of wild apple forests. The finding suggests the necessity of aerial irrigation for sustainable integrated pest management in wild apple trees.

A wideband equivalent-circuit model of coaxial-annular through-silicon vias (TSVs) for three-dimensional (3-D) integrated circuits is proposed in this paper. Rigorous closed-form formulas for the resistance and inductance of coaxial-annular TSVs are derived by computing the longitudinal electrical field in Cu and the longitudinal magnetic vector potentials in ${\rm{SiO}}_{2}$ and Si substrate with Bessel functions. The equivalent-circuit model can appropriately capture the skin effect in Cu as well as eddy-current effect in Si substrate. The proposed model is verified using 3-D full-wave field solver high frequency simulator structure, showing that it can yields highly accurate results up to 100 GHz.

Alternative splicing (AS) is a major source of transcript and proteome diversity, but examining AS in species without well-annotated reference genomes remains difficult. Research on both human and mouse has demonstrated the advantages of using Iso-Seq™ data for isoform-level transcriptome analysis, including the study of AS and gene fusion. We applied Iso-Seq™ to investigate AS in Amborella trichopoda, a phylogenetically pivotal species that is sister to all other living angiosperms. Our data show that, compared with RNA-Seq data, the Iso-Seq™ platform provides better recovery on large transcripts, new gene locus identification and gene model correction. Reference-based AS detection with Iso-Seq™ data identifies AS within a higher fraction of multi-exonic genes than observed for published RNA-Seq analysis (45.8% vs. 37.5%). These data demonstrate that the Iso-Seq™ approach is useful for detecting AS events. Using the Iso-Seq-defined transcript collection in Amborella as a reference, we further describe a pipeline for detection of AS isoforms from PacBio Iso-Seq™ without using a reference sequence (de novo). Results using this pipeline show a 66%-76% overall success rate in identifying AS events. This de novoAS detection pipeline provides a method to accurately characterize and identify bona fide alternatively spliced transcripts in any nonmodel system that lacks a reference genome sequence. Hence, our pipeline has huge potential applications and benefits to the broader biology community.

This paper presents an effective loop impedance extraction method and a model of a signal through-silicon via (TSV) surrounded by multiground TSVs. According to this method, the effective coupling substrate capacitances of multiground TSVs with different numbers and placements are calculated. Based on the calculated values of the resistance-inductance-capacitance-conductance (RLCG) parameters, the equivalent circuit and a two-port network model are established. The S -parameters of the model are validated by the simulated and measured results. Then, the effect of different patterns of ground TSVs on the central signal and coupling capacitance are discussed. Note that the hexagon pattern proposed in this paper can save the occupied area prominently without damaging the signal integrity.

Early diagnosis of cancer biomarkers is the key to guiding treatments and improving the survival rate of patients. Herein, we report a novel surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS)-based lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) for quantitative and ultra-sensitive analysis of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP). Gold nanorods (AuNRs) were fabricated to be in resonance with 785 nm laser excitation, that is, the excitation level that can maximize SERRS activity. The AuNRs were modified with 5,5′-dithiobis(2-nitrobenzoic acid), bovine serum albumin (BSA), and AFP detection antibody successively as the SERRS nanotags for the LFIA system. Modification of the BSA layer guaranteed good stability and biocompatibility of the SERRS nanotags in complex samples. The SERRS-LFIA strip for AFP detection showed a low detection limit of 9.2 pg mL−1 and a broad detection range from 10 pg mL−1 to 500 ng mL−1. By comparison, the detection limit of the proposed assay is about 100 and 10 times lower than those of the Au nanoparticle-based SERS-strip and conventional enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, respectively. Moreover, the potential clinical applications of the assay were evaluated by detecting 10 actual serum samples. Results showed 100% accuracy based on the clinical tests.

Unbonded prestressed reinforced concrete column (UBPRC column) has become an attractive approach in the field of bridge seismic design due to its superior self-centering behavior. Unbonded prestressing bar in a UBPRC column functions as a self-centering element and longitudinal mild reinforcement functions as an energy dissipator. Quasi-static cyclic test was carried out in this study to compare the seismic performance of reinforced concrete column (RC column), UBPRC column and fully prestressed concrete column (FPC column). The result shows that the UBPRC column has higher post-yield stiffness and smaller quasi-static residual displacement, but lower energy dissipation capability than the RC column. The FPC column suffers from the least quasi-static residual displacement, but has the lowest energy dissipation capability, the least ultimate displacement and the most severe prestress loss. The quasi-static residual displacement and residual crack width of the UBPRC column are around 66% and 73% of those of the RC column, respectively. The failure patterns of the RC column and the UBPRC column are similar, while the failure pattern of the FPC column is similar to that of a rocking column. The self-centering behavior of the three columns was analyzed and quantified using a self-centering index, which can be recommended for use in the seismic design of bridge columns.

The present study aimed to investigate the effect of avicularin on rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in vitro, and additionally explore the molecular mechanism. To perform this investigation, an in vitro model of RA was established by treatment of the human RA synovial MH7A cell line with tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). MH7A cells were then treated with various concentrations (10, 30, 100 and 300 µM) of avicularin. Then, the levels of inflammatory factors [interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-8, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)-1 and MMP-13] were measured by ELISA. Cell viability and apoptosis were detected using an MTT assay and flow cytometry, respectively. In addition, the expression levels of genes and proteins were determined reverse transcription quantitative polymerase chain reaction and western blot analysis. The results of the present study indicated that avicularin significantly decreased the levels of inflammatory factors (IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, MMP-1 and MMP-13), previously increased by TNF-α, in a dose-dependent manner. Concurrently, avicularin inhibited the mRNA and protein expression levels of iNOS and COX-2 increased by TNF-α. It was also identified that TNF-α administration significantly promoted MH7A cell viability and inhibited cell apoptosis, and avicularin treatment dose-dependently inhibited MH7A cell viability and induced cell apoptosis. In addition, these data suggested that avicularin prevented the activation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MEK)/nuclear factor kappa light-chain-enhancer of activated B-cells (NF-κB) pathway activated by TNF-α. Taken together, these results demonstrated that avicularin may inhibit the inflammatory response, prevent cell viability and induce apoptosis in human RA synovial cells through preventing the activation of the MEK/NF-κB pathway.

Keep-out-zone (KOZ) is a conservative way to prevent any devices/cells from being impacted by the through-silicon via (TSV)-induced stress. In this paper, an effective approach was proposed of reducing the KOZ induced by coaxial TSV, by using the structure of coaxial-annular TSV, without decreasing the electrical performance of coaxial TSV. The analytical model was developed appropriate for the thermal stress induced by both coaxial and coaxial-annular TSVs, and was verified by the finite element method. The KOZs induced by coaxial and coaxial-annular TSVs were compared in detail, and the effects of Cu plasticity, TSV material, TSV size, and inner metal plating ratio of coaxial-annular TSV were also studied. The electrical characteristics of different TSVs were compared by employing ANSYS' HFSS, and a feasible fabrication process for coaxial-annular TSV was suggested. It could be concluded that: 1) a 1.6-μm (22.2%) drop of KOZ for coaxial-annular TSV could be reached as compared with that of coaxial TSV; 2) coaxialannular TSV was proved to offer the same superior signal integrity with coaxial TSV, improving S21 by about 93% at 5 GHz and 60% at 20 GHz compared with ordinary cylindrical and annular TSVs; and 3) the coaxial-annular TSV is realizable.

Microsatellites, or simple sequence repeats (SSRs), have long played a major role in genetic studies due to their typically high polymorphism. They have diverse applications, including genome mapping, forensics, ascertaining parentage, population and conservation genetics, identification of the parentage of polyploids, and phylogeography. We compare SSRs and newer methods, such as genotyping by sequencing (GBS) and restriction site associated DNA sequencing (RAD-Seq), and offer recommendations for researchers considering which genetic markers to use. We also review the variety of techniques currently used for identifying microsatellite loci and developing primers, with a particular focus on those that make use of next-generation sequencing (NGS). Additionally, we review software for microsatellite development and report on an experiment to assess the utility of currently available software for SSR development. Finally, we discuss the future of microsatellites and make recommendations for researchers preparing to use microsatellites. We argue that microsatellites still have an important place in the genomic age as they remain effective and cost-efficient markers.

The writer focused on the strategies of establishing maritime performing party in China, and analyzed the problems which needed to pay attention. Finally, in the writer's view, China does not need to take part in the Convention, and can establish the maritime performing system by amending China Maritime Code.

"United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Carriage of Goods Wholly or Partly by Sea" was passed in July 3, 2008. on September 23, 2009 signing ceremony was held in Rotterdam. The system of maritime performing party is a special system in the transport convention, and constitutes an integral part of the Convention. Maritime performing party system is not the first system which brings in the carrier's independent contractor, but it is the most comprehensive and thorough one. It unified the duty of carrier's independent contractor in the maritime segment, and it is also an important progress in the developing process of international maritime legal system. There are some differences between the maritime performing party and China's current related system, i.e, the port maritime performing party and the intermediate performing party are included in the maritime performing party, and they can enjoy the carrier's exception clause and limitation of liability.

In order to fulfill post-earthquake operational requirements, in recent years, there has been an increasing interest in developing self-centering structural systems, where self-centering elements are used with combinations of energy dissipation elements in parallel. It was demonstrated experimentally and numerically that such systems exhibit robust flag-shape hysteretic behavior under seismic load. A new performance index for evaluating self-centering behavior of the bridge column is developed in this paper based on the flag-shape hysteresis and the index can be obtained conveniently. Parametric analysis was carried out to investigate the effects of different parameters on the seismic response of a SDOF system. The results show that the residual displacement decreases as the new performance index increases and the residual displacement is negligible when the performance index [Formula: see text] exceeds unity (1.0). Furthermore, parametric analysis was conducted to investigate the effects of design parameters on the self-centering behavior of an unbonded pre-stresed reinforced concrete column (UBPS column). The design parameters include the prestressing force, the bonded longitudinal reinforcement ratio and the area of unbonded strands. Results show that either increasing the prestressing force or decreasing the amount of longitudinal reinforcement can result in smaller residual displacement and a higher value of the new index.

Premise of the study: The One Thousand Plant Transcriptomes Project (1KP, 1000+ assembled plant transcriptomes) provides an enormous resource for developing microsatellite loci across the plant tree of life. We developed loci from these transcriptomes and tested their utility. Methods and Results: Using software packages and custom scripts, we identified microsatellite loci in 1KP transcriptomes. We assessed the potential for cross-amplification and whether loci were biased toward exons, as compared to markers derived from genomic DNA. We characterized over 5.7 million simple sequence repeat (SSR) loci from 1334 plant transcriptomes. Eighteen percent of loci substantially overlapped with open reading frames (ORFs), and electronic PCR revealed that over half the loci would amplify successfully in conspecific taxa. The azocalix[4]arene film modified glassy carbon electrode was established for the convenient and sensitive detection of four DNA bases (guanine, adenine, thymine and cytosine). Field emission scanning electron microscopy, attenuated total reflectance-FTIR and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the film. The azocalix[4]arene film exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity toward the oxidation of all bases. Well-separated voltammetric peaks were obtained among guanine, adenine, thymine and cytosine, which lead to the feasibility for the simultaneous determination of all of them in a mixture without separation or pretreatment. Linear calibration curves were obtained from 0.125 to 200.0 μM for adenine, 0.125 to 175.0 μM for guanine, 2.50 to 650.0 μM for thymine, and 2.50 to 650.0 μM for cytosine. This sensor also exhibits good stability, reproducibility and long lifetime.

We demonstrate coherent control of population transfer between vibrational states in an optical lattice by using interference between a one-phonon transition at $2\omega$ and a two-phonon transition at $\omega$. The $\omega$ and $2\omega$ transitions are driven by phase- and amplitude-modulation of the lattice laser beams, respectively. By varying the relative phase between these two pathways, we control the branching ratio of transitions to the first excited state and to the higher states. Our best result shows an improvement of the branching ratio by a factor of 3.5$\pm$0.7. The objective of this study was to investigate the role of the RhoA/Rock signaling pathway in the epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT) of rat peritoneal mesothelial cells (RPMCs). Primary SD rat peritoneal mesothelial cells were cultured in vitro. RPMCs were randomly assigned to four groups: group A (control), group B (TGF-β1, 10 μg/L), group C (10 μg/L TGF-β1 + 10 μmol/L Y-27632, an inhibitor of Rock that was pre-applied for 2 h before TGF-β1 stimulation), and group D (Y-27632 alone, 10 μmol/L). Our results were as follows: (1) TGF-β1 stimulation elicited a robust increase in RhoA activity in a time-dependent manner; the increase was 2.57 ± 0.52 times larger than the activity observed for the control group (P < 0.05) after 10 min of stimulation. RhoA activity peaked at 1 h and was 4.35 ± 0.41 times the value observed for the control group (P < 0.05). (2) TGF-β1 up-regulated mRNA and/or protein expression of α-SMA, vimentin, and collagen and down-regulated mRNA and protein expression of E-cadherin in RPMCs. (3) The Rock inhibitor Y-27632 effectively reduced TGF-β1-induced expression of α-SMA, collagen, and vimentin; the mRNA levels of α-SMA and collagen decreased by 53.8% and 55.7%, respectively, and the protein levels of α-SMA, vimentin, and collagen decreased by 42.6%, 60.1%, and 58.1%, respectively, as compared to TGF-β1-stimulated groups (P < 0.05). However, the Rock inhibitor Y-27632 had no effect on the level of E-cadherin. In conclusion, the RhoA/Rock signaling pathway may mediate EMT induced by TGF-β1 in rat peritoneal mesothelial cells. The RhoA/Rock pathway may be a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of peritoneal fibrosis.

This review aims to describe changes in breastfeeding and summarise the breastfeeding rates, duration and reasons of discontinuing 'any breastfeeding' or 'exclusive breastfeeding' in P.R. China. Breastfeeding rates in China fell during the 1970s when the use of breast milk substitutes became widespread, and reached the lowest point in the 1980s. As a result many efforts were introduced to promote breastfeeding. The breastfeeding rate in China started to increase in the 1990s, and since the mid-1990s 'any breastfeeding' rates in the majority of cities and provinces, including minority areas, have been above 80% at four months. But most cities and provinces did not reach the national target of 'exclusive breastfeeding' of 80%. The 'exclusive breastfeeding' rates in minority areas were relatively lower than comparable inland provinces. The mean duration of 'any breastfeeding' in the majority of cities or provinces was between seven and nine months. The common reasons for ceasing breastfeeding, or introducing water or other infant food before four months, were perceived breast milk insufficiency, mother going to work, maternal and child illness and breast problems. Incorrect traditional perceptions have a strong adverse influence on 'exclusive breastfeeding' in less developed areas or rural areas. China is a huge country, geographically and in population size, and there is considerable ethnic diversity. Therefore breastfeeding rates in different parts of China can vary considerably.

Background There have been considerable changes in breastfeeding practices in China over the past forty years. However China is a very large country, and breastfeeding rates in different parts of China vary considerably. The objective of this paper is to identify and compare breastfeeding types and rates between 1994–1996 and 2003–2004 in Shihezi, Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, PR China. Methods In 1994–1996, a study of breastfeeding (n = 2197) was undertaken in Shihezi, Xinjiang, PR China. A decade later in 2003–2004, a longitudinal study (n = 545) of infant feeding practices was undertaken in the same area. Results The 'any breastfeeding' rates at 1, 4 and 6 months were 94%, 82% and 78% respectively in the early 1990s. A decade later, breastfeeding at 1 month was lower, but rates at 4 and 6 months remained the same. In 2004 the 'full breastfeeding' rate at one month was significantly higher (57%) than a decade earlier (38%), but after 3 months there was a rapid decline. This reflected a shift in the way complementary foods are introduced: the initial introduction was later, but by a higher proportion of mothers. Conclusion The rate of breastfeeding at one month is significantly lower in 2003–2004 when compared to 1994–1996. The 'full breastfeeding' rates were initially higher, but after 3 months were then lower. The Chinese national breastfeeding targets were not reached in either period of the study. These studies show the need to further promote full or exclusive breastfeeding and further longitudinal studies are necessary to provide the detailed knowledge about risk factors required for health promotion programs.

Nearly four decades ago, Roose & Gottlieb (Roose & Gottlieb 1976Evolution30, 818–830. (doi:10.2307/2407821)) showed that the recently derived allotetraploidsTragopogon mirusandT. miscelluscombined the allozyme profiles of their diploid parents (T. dubiusandT. porrifolius, andT. dubiusandT. pratensis, respectively). This classic paper addressed the link between genotype and biochemical phenotype and documented enzyme additivity in allopolyploids. Perhaps more important than their model of additivity, however, was their demonstration of novelty at the biochemical level. Enzyme multiplicity—the production of novel enzyme forms in the allopolyploids—can provide an extensive array of polymorphism for a polyploid individual and may explain, for example, the expanded ranges of polyploids relative to their diploid progenitors. In this paper, we extend the concept of evolutionary novelty in allopolyploids to a range of genetic and ecological features. We observe that the dynamic nature of polyploid genomes—with alterations in gene content, gene number, gene arrangement, gene expression and transposon activity—may generate sufficient novelty that every individual in a polyploid population or species may be unique. Whereas certain combinations of these features will undoubtedly be maladaptive, some unique combinations of newly generated variation may provide tremendous evolutionary potential and adaptive capabilities.
