1. Toucha11y: Making Inaccessible Public Touchscreens Accessible

Abstract

Despite their growing popularity, many public kiosks with touchscreens are inaccessible to blind people. Toucha11y is a working prototype that allows blind users to use existing inaccessible touchscreen kiosks independently and with little effort. Toucha11y consists of a mechanical bot that can be instrumented to an arbitrary touchscreen kiosk by a blind user and a companion app on their smartphone. The bot, once attached to a touchscreen, will recognize its content, retrieve the corresponding information from a database, and render it on the user's smartphone. As a result, a blind person can use the smartphone's built-in accessibility features to access content and make selections. The mechanical bot will detect and activate the corresponding touchscreen interface. We present the system design of Toucha11y along with a series of technical evaluations. Through a user study, we found out that Toucha11y could help blind users operate inaccessible touchscreen devices.

Abstract

The federal circuit courts of appeals are in conflict over whether Title III of the Americans with Disabilities Act requires public accommodations' websites to be accessible to people with disabilities. Some courts consider websites themselves to be a covered 'place of public accommodation. ' Others conclude that websites are not covered at all. The predominant view is that a website must be accessible if it has a 'nexus ' to a physical public location. However, the 'nexus' requirement has been problematic from the start and its weaknesses have been particularly exposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic exposes a deep mismatch between the 'nexus ' requirement and how businesses approach their work. 5. End-User Satisfaction in Training Novice Users To Surf the Web.

Abstract

The user population of the World Wide Web is increasing rapidly. People who have never had experience with computers are logging on, and, therefore, the novice user population is very large. These new users need to be trained in using this new technology. It is therefore important to investigate which training methods leave the users most satisfied. This paper presents the results of an experiment designed to assess user satisfaction with different training methods. Over 250 users took part in this experiment, measuring user satisfaction with eight different training methods: networked error training; conceptual error training; conceptual exploratory training; conceptual training; error training; error management training; exploratory training; and traditional training. There were not major differences in user satisfaction across training methods, but overall satisfaction scores were very high. This might mean that the users were in serious need of training and were satisfied to have received training, regardless of the type of training. (Contains 34 references.) (Author/MES)

Abstract

The purpose of the conference was to review the current legal issues, policies, and practices in Federal ERM electronic records; learn specific strategies and solutions for managing electronic records on Web sites; exchange ideas and share information for Web site ERM; and contribute to the development of ERM policies and guidelines for the Federal government. At the beginning of the conference, 147 attendees completed a short survey about their views of ERM on government Web sites. Preliminary findings from the surveys were presented at the end of the conference. There was also an open discussion session at the end of the conference for participants to discuss their views on problems and solutions in the ERM of Web sites. This report includes findings from the 22-item surveys and also a summary of the problems and solutions presented at the open discussion session. The text of each survey question is presented with the results. A complete copy of the participant survey is appended. (AEF)

The impacts of the Internet on library services and information usage since the advent of the World Wide Web have been significant, changing patron expectations for libraries, the ways in which libraries can reach patrons, the amount of information available, the job requirements of librarians, and the roles that libraries can play in their communities in times of need, among more prominent changes. This article will consider the coevolution of the Internet, public libraries, and public library research through the lens of the historical evolution of the methods of the Public Library Funding and Technology Access study. The three authors of this article bring a unique focus to the topic, having collectively worked at various points on most of the iterations of the study over its more than decade and a half of existence. Abstract

Many devices, such as smart phones, implement vibration motors for tactile feedback. When multiple vibration motors are placed on, for instance, the backrest of a chair it is possible to trace shapes on the back of a person by sequentially switching motors on and off. Social Haptic Communication (SHC) is a tactile mode of communication for persons with deafblindness that makes use of tracing shapes or other types of spatiotemporal patterns with the hand on the back of another person. This could be emulated using vibrotactile patterns. Here we investigated whether SHC users with deafblindness would recognize the vibrotactile patterns as SHC signs (Haptices). In several cases the participants immediately linked a vibrotactile patterns to the Haptice that is was meant to imitate. Together with the participants we improved and expanded the set of vibrotactile patterns.

28. Severity and Impact of Computer User Frustration: A Comparison of Student and Workplace Users (2002)

Abstract

User frustration with information and computing technology is a pervasive and persistent problem. When computers crash, network congestion causes delays, and poor user interfaces trigger confusion there are dramatic consequences for individuals, organizations, and society. These frustrations not only cause personal dissatisfaction and loss of self-efficacy, but may disrupt workplaces, slow learning, and reduce participation in local and national communities. Our study of 107 student computer users and 50 workplace computer users shows high levels of frustration and loss of 1/3 to 1/2 of time spent. This paper reports on the incident-specific and user-specific causes of frustration, and they raise frustration severity. It examines the frustration impacts on the daily interactions of the users. The time lost and time to fix problem, and importance of task, strongly correlate with frustration levels for both student and workplace users. Differences between students and workplace users are discussed in the paper.

Abstract

When hard to use computers cause users to become frustrated, it can affect workplace productivity, user mood, and interactions with other co-workers. Previous research has examined the frustration that graduate students and their families face in using computers. To learn more about the causes and effects of user frustration with computers in the workplace, we collected modified time diaries from 50 workplace users, who spent an average of 5.1 hours on the computer. In this experiment, users reported wasting on average, 42-43% of their time on the computer due to frustrating experiences. The causes of the frustrating experiences, the time lost due to the frustrating experiences, and the effects of the frustrating experiences on the mood of the users are discussed in this paper. Implications for designers, managers, users, information technology staff, and policymakers are discussed.

While most aspects of web accessibility are technically easy to solve, providing accessible equivalents of data visualizations for blind users remains a challenging problem. Previous attempts at accessible equivalents focused on sonification of population data. This paper describes the creation of two prototypes for providing real-time weather information in a sonified format for blind users. A structured requirements gathering using interviews and surveys led to the development of the first sonification prototype using both keyboard and touchscreen (with a tactile overlay) access to weather data on a PC and Mac. This prototype was evaluated for usability by five blind users. Based on the feedback from the usability evaluation, a second prototype on a new platform (Android tablet computer) was created. We discuss the development and evaluation process for the sonification prototypes, with a detailed description of the usability evaluations performed in the field. The studies show that when working at the intersection of users with disabilities and new technologies, it's important to be flexible and adjust quickly to get the most out of field studies. Results showed the most common problems encountered by blind users while using such sites, which include confusing layout, searching for jobs link, and labeling problem. Despite the significant advantages that access to information and communication technology has made to many of our lives, the related benefits, opportunities and even equalizing effect of this technology are often not accessible or only partially accessible to a growing portion of the global population. Current disability rights laws which are supposed to exist for the protection and well-being of individuals with disabilities are often too close to the heart of the problem, as they can actually promote a separate but unequal online environment. If current U.S. laws were revised to encourage born-accessible technology and there was consistent enforcement of such laws, the online experience of millions of individuals with disabilities could be drastically improved. This article examines the aspects of the current laws that perpetuate a separate but unequal online environment, discussing past and current examples of such inequity. It also contrasts the structure of current U.S. disability rights laws with other civil rights legislation and offers a set of policy recommendations that could have a positive impact on accessibility. The article presents information on accessibility barriers for blind users who use screen readers like Window-Eyes and Access Systems to access websites. E-mail is an effective communication tool nowadays but websites can present certain barriers for blind people. To conduct the study, 15 blind users tested seven popular e-mail applications. The conclusion of the study was to improve e-mail applications including web-based interfaces, calendaring and the e-mail address book.

E-mail serves as an important tool for communication nowadays, but blind users using screen readers like System Acess to access websites can get barriers of accessibility and usability. To evaluate these problems, seven e-mail applications like Gmail and Yahoo Mail Classic were tested by 15 blind users. On basis of feedback, some changes to the testing process and questions were implemented.
