Hyuga-nada, off the Pacific coast of Kyushu along the Nankai Trough in southwest Japan, is one of the most active slow earthquake regions around Japan. We estimated the energies of shallow tremors and moments of shallow very low frequency earthquakes (VLFEs) in Hyuga-nada using data from a permanent onshore broadband network and temporary ocean–bottom seismometer observations. The energies and moments of these slow earthquakes have a similar along-strike variation and are generally higher south of the subducted Kyushu–Palau Ridge than near the top of the ridge. This spatial variation is also related to the characteristics of slow earthquake migration. The along-strike migration speed was faster at initiation in the south, where the moments of slow earthquakes are higher. After migration entered the subducted Kyushu–Palau Ridge, its speed was decelerated with a parabolic pattern and their moments became smaller. Assuming a constant patch size of slow earthquakes, we estimated that the stress drop of VLFEs in the south of the subducted ridge was approximately three times higher than that near the top of the subducted ridge. According to our observations and a physical model, this stress drop difference between adjacent regions may cause parabolic migration. We also estimated the scaled energy of slow earthquakes from the ratio of the seismic energy rates of tremors to the seismic moment rates of accompanying VLFEs. The spatial variation in scaled energy is not identified inside the Hyuga-nada. Since the range of scaled energy is similar between the south and near the top of the subducted ridge, the apparent stress may be similar if the rigidity is the same. The dominant range of scaled energy of slow earthquakes in Hyuga-nada is 10−11.5–10−8.5. In addition to having similar or one order smaller values compared to other slow earthquake regions, the range of scaled energy in Hyuga-nada is broader. This broader range suggests wide range of characteristic time and various spectral features of slow earthquakes in Hyuga-nada. Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) using existing optical fiber cables facilitates high‐density seismic observation. However, few studies have examined the reliability of the seismic waveform amplitude recorded by DAS. In this study, a DAS network was connected to optical fiber cables installed over a distance of 75 km along a high‐speed train (Shinkansen) railway in the Kumamoto prefecture, Japan. We successfully observed strong motions of the Mj6.6 earthquake (approximately 150 km from the fiber) on 22 January 2022, in Hyuga‐nada, in addition to several small local earthquakes. The observed strong motions from the Mj6.6 earthquake, using DAS, exhibited cycle skipping (clipping) issues due to dynamic range limitations at numerous channels. To address this, we estimated the shaking map, representing maximum strain distributions for Mj6.6, by replacing the clipped data with information from nearby unclipped channels and scaling their RMS amplitudes based on S‐coda (unclipped). Furthermore, we verified the reliability of the amplitude information obtained from DAS by estimating the distance attenuation of seismic waves while correcting for the differences in the structure type and coupling as much as possible. The distance attenuation property of local earthquakes was consistent with that of the peak ground velocities obtained from seismometers, indicating that DAS data acquired using fibers installed on infrastructure (various structures) can also be utilized to assess the spatial distribution of the relative amplitude values along the fiber. Obtaining high‐density seismic motion distributions is important for earthquake early warning and accurate damage estimation of strong motions. By utilizing existing dark fibers, such as telecommunication cables, high‐density seismic observation networks can be established in residential areas. In this study, DAS was applied to an existing optical fiber cable installed along a railway line, which recorded strong ground motions of Mj6.6 originating from a subduction zone, as well as numerous regional earthquakes. Although the technique uses optical phase differences for strain measurements and therefore has a poor response to strong ground motions, we resolve this issue using the correct data from neighboring stations as a reference and estimated the shaking distribution every 5 m along 75 km of the railway line. Additionally, when we analyzed the distance attenuation of small regional earthquakes, we found that the attenuation characteristics were similar to those obtained from permanent seismometers. These findings will significantly impact society in the future, particularly as the fiber cables replace conventional seismic observation networks. As a result, ultra‐high‐density observation networks will be capable of issuing more accurate earthquake early warnings and estimating damage following earthquakes. In this study, geodetic and seismic phenomena occurring in the subduction zone were observed with two tiltmeters that were installed in seafloor boreholes drilled in the Kumano Basin in the Nankai Trough, southwest Japan. We used one electrolytic-type tiltmeter and one pendulum-type tiltmeter installed 6 and 19 m below the seafloor, respectively. The two tiltmeters have been continuously operated since 2019 and 2021, respectively. The records of the two tiltmeters showed microseisms, seismic signals of normal earthquakes, and variations that correlated well with the M2 tide (tidal response). The noise environment relative to existing seafloor observatories was assessed by comparing the power spectral densities of the tiltmeters and broadband seismometers in the seismic frequency band. The two tiltmeters and the seismometers showed similar spectral peaks in the microseism band, and at lower frequencies below 10–2 Hz, the pendulum tiltmeter had a noise level that was up to 20 dB lower than that of the broadband seismometers. The tidal responses of the tiltmeters were analyzed to reveal corresponding mechanisms because a large amplitude of the tidal response makes it difficult to detect geodetic phenomena. Considerable azimuthal dependence was observed in the NW–SE direction for both tiltmeters. The principal direction was approximately the same as the down-slope direction of the local bathymetry. This tendency was thus interpreted to be caused by the differences in the thickness of the sedimentary layer along the direction of the slope. Furthermore, the validity of the tilt measurements for the two tiltmeters was demonstrated by in-situ loading experiments, where the theoretical response of an elastic half-space medium was computed and compared with the experimental results. Off Cape Muroto area, along the Nankai Trough in southwest Japan, is a typical area with adjacent occurrences of slow and megathrust earthquakes. High‐resolution monitoring of slow earthquakes is necessary to understand tectonic conditions. In the off Muroto area, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) measurement, which provides high‐density strain data, has been conducted using offshore fiber‐optic cable. We observed shallow tremors, a type of slow earthquakes, using DAS measurement for the first time. The characteristics of the tremor signals recorded by DAS were longer durations than those recorded in seismographs and composed of several phases with apparent velocities of several hundreds of m/s to several km/s that are coherent only in tens of meters. By combining DAS and seismograph data, we located these tremors around a subducted seamount peak. Therefore, spatial relationship between slow earthquakes and structural characteristics is suggested. This is a pioneering study of slow earthquake observation using DAS. This study presents the shear wave velocity (VS) structures of sedimentary sequences and a section of the upper crustal layer in the Fukushima forearc region of the Japan Trench subduction zone, which were obtained by analysing the horizontal-to-vertical (H/V) spectral ratios of ambient vibration records. The H/V curves were derived using 31 d of continuous seismic data from 3 broad-band and 16 short-period ocean bottom seismometer (OBS) stations. Using the broad-band data, H/V ratios from 0.01 to 10 Hz were derived, but the ratios below 0.1 Hz frequencies were unusually large and temporally unstable. Characterization of seismic noise energy from ∼1 yr of seismic data of three broad-band OBSs revealed variable and elevated energy conditions below 0.1 Hz due to typical long-period oceanic noise; we link these observations with the unstable H/V ratios below this frequency. Therefore, H/V analysis was performed in the frequency range of 0.1–10 Hz for both broad-band and short-period OBSs to obtain subsurface VS profiles. For the forward calculation of the H/V ratios in the inversion process, we used the recently developed 'hvgeneralized' method, which is based on the diffuse field assumption, and accounts for the water layer on top of stratified media. Moreover, available prior geological and geophysical information was utilized during the inversion of the H/V curves. We found that subsurface VS ranged from approximately 30 m s−1 at the seabed to approximately 4900 m s−1 at 7000 m below the sea floor (mbsf). Starting with the best model candidate at each OBS location, the effect of the water layer on the H/V curve in the deep ocean was investigated by comparing synthetic H/V curves with and without the water layer. The synthetic H/V analysis revealed that the water layer had a significant effect on H/V amplitudes at higher frequencies (>1 Hz), whereas comparatively little effect was observed at lower frequencies (<1 Hz). This study provides an empirical basis for H/V analysis using OBS data to determine VS down to several kilometres of sedimentary sequences to the upper crust with high-resolution. Shear wave velocity (Vs) estimations of accretionary prisms can pose unique constraints to the physical properties of rocks, which are hard to obtain from compressional velocities (Vp) alone. Thus, it would help better understand the fluid processes of the accretion system. This study investigates the Vs structure of the Hyuga‐nada accretionary prism using an array of ocean‐bottom seismometers (OBSs) with a 2 km radius. Teleseismic Green's functions and a surface wave dispersion curve are inverted to one‐dimensional Vs structures using transdimensional inversion. The results indicate the presence of a low‐velocity zone 3–4 km below the seafloor. The reduced Vs corresponds to a reduced Vp feature obtained in a previous seismic refraction survey, and the high Vp/Vs ratio suggests the presence of high pore fluid pressure. In addition, the resolved lithological boundary exhibits a sharp offset that extends laterally across the OBS array. We attribute this offset to a blind fault below while acknowledging other possibilities, such as due to mud diapirism or intense fracturing. The predicted fault is located at the Kyushu–Palau Ridge flank, oriented roughly parallel to the ridge axis, and thus likely caused by ridge subduction. This fault may act as a fluid conduit, contributing to the formation of a fluid reservoir beneath the compacted sediment layers. This study investigates the subsurface structure in Hyuga‐nada in the southwestern Japan subduction zone by exploring S‐wave speeds. For this purpose, we use natural seismic and noise data recorded by densely installed ocean‐bottom seismometers. The results reveal a region with a reduced S‐wave velocity at a depth of ∼3–4 km below the seafloor, which may be a water reservoir. To clarify the characteristics of high-frequency (> 1 Hz) S and S-coda waves at ocean-bottom seismometers (OBSs), we analyzed seismograms observed at permanent OBSs and inland broadband seismometers around the Kii Peninsula in southwest Japan along the Nankai Trough. The coda amplitudes (both horizontal and vertical) at the OBSs were much larger than those at the inland rock-site stations. Because coda amplitudes relative to those at inland rock-site stations have been used as site-amplification factors, large site amplifications for both components can be expected due to the presence of thick oceanic sediments just below the OBSs; however, the observed maximum S-wave amplitudes in the vertical component exhibited similar attenuation trends against epicentral distances at both OBS and inland stations. To clarify the causes of this discrepancy, we conducted numerical simulations of seismic wave propagation using various three-dimensional seismic velocity structure models. The results demonstrated that coda waves at OBSs mostly comprise multiple scattered waves within a thick (> 2 km) sedimentary layer; consequently, coda amplitudes at OBSs become much larger than those at inland rock-site stations. Our numerical simulations also confirmed the generation of large coda amplitudes at regions with seawater depths ≥ 4 km, where no OBS was deployed. However, the thick sedimentary layer and seawater have limited effects on maximum S-wave amplitudes at the OBSs. Given that the effects of a thick sedimentary layer and seawater on S and S-coda waves differ, we concluded that the coda-normalization technique for site-amplification correction against a rock-site station could not be applied if stations are located within regions above the thick sedimentary layer or deeper sea depths. The site amplifications at the OBSs were corrected according to the horizontal-to-vertical ratios at each OBS; we adjusted the simulated horizontal envelopes at the OBSs using these ratios of the observed S-coda waves. Since deep low‐frequency tremors are considered to be associated with large earthquakes that occur adjacently on the same subducting plate interface, it is important to investigate tremors that occurred before the establishment of modern seismograph networks such as the High Sensitivity Seismograph Network (Hi‐net). We propose a deep‐learning solution to detect evidence of tremors in scanned images of paper seismogram records from over 50 years ago. In this study, we fine‐tuned a convolutional neural network (CNN) based on the Residual Network, which was pre‐trained using images of synthetic waveforms from our previous study, using a data set comprised of images generated from real seismic data recorded digitally by Hi‐net to facilitate a supervised analysis. The fine‐tuned CNN was able to predict the presence or absence of tremors in the Hi‐net images with an accuracy of 98.64%. Gradient‐weighted Class Activation Mapping heatmaps created to visualize model predictions indicated that the CNN's ability to detect tremors is not degraded by the presence of teleseisms. Once validated using the Hi‐net images, the CNN was applied to paper seismograms recorded from 1966 to 1977 at the Kumano observatory in southwest Japan, operated by Earthquake Research Institute, The University of Tokyo. The CNN showed potential for detecting tremors in scanned images of paper seismogram records from the past, facilitating downstream tasks such as the creation of new tremor catalogs. However, further training using an augmented data set to control for variables such as inconsistent plotting pen thickness is required to develop a universally applicable model. Plain Language Summary: In 2002, deep low‐frequency tremors, which periodically occur with much smaller amplitudes and longer durations than common earthquakes, were discovered owing to the establishment of dense seismic arrays in Japan. These tremors are considered to be associated with megathrust earthquakes because they occur in deeper regions of plate boundaries compared with common earthquakes. Investigating tremors that occurred before the establishment of dense seismic arrays is important since megathrust earthquakes recur on intervals of 100–200 years, and digital records from modern seismic arrays cover only a fraction of that time. In this study, we developed a convolutional neural network based on the Residual Network (ResNet) that extracts tremors from images of waveforms recorded more than 50 years ago, when seismometers drew waveforms directly on drum‐rolled paper using a pen. The proposed ResNet, which was trained on seismogram images generated from synthetic waveforms and real data recorded digitally by modern seismic arrays, was applied to scanned images of paper seismograms recorded from 1966 to 1977 at an observatory in southwest Japan. A list of tremors was successfully obtained; however, further training using data that accounts for variables such as inconsistent plotting pen thickness is required to develop a universally applicable model. S-net is a large-scale ocean bottom (OB) network in the Japan Trench area, consisting of inline-type 150 observatories equipped with seismometers and pressure gauges. Among them, 41 observatories have been buried about one meter beneath the seafloors in the shallow water regions (water depth <1500 m). We analyzed the strong-motion data recorded at the S-net sites from earthquakes with magnitudes 3.5 < Mw ≤ 7 and focal depths < 70 km to understand the site amplification effect on the recorded motions. We used the spectral inversion technique and obtained some fundamental properties of the earthquake source spectra, path attenuation, and site factors from the horizontal-component S-wave portions of the recordings. We obtained that the source spectra followed the ω - 2 source model generally well, and the estimated magnitudes were mostly within ± 0.3 magnitude units of the catalog magnitudes. The stress drops increased systematically with the focal depths, and the values for the shallow earthquakes in the Pacific Plate were higher than those for the interplate earthquakes with comparable focal depths. The path-averaged quality factors were generally frequency-dependent and were somewhat larger than those in the past studies. The peak site frequencies ranged between about 0.2 and 10 Hz, while the peak amplification factors ranged between 10 and 50. Even though the peak frequencies and amplification factors differed from site to site, the peak frequencies were mostly higher than 2 Hz at the outer trench stations, while they were lower than 2 Hz at many inner trench stations. The amplification factors at a few OB sites in the shallow water regions were comparable with the theoretical ones computed from the 1-D subsea model. The amplification factors at intermediate frequencies (~ 0.3 to 2 Hz) generally increased with P-wave travel time in the sediments estimated from the multi-channel seismic survey. At about 20% of the sites (mainly at the unburied stations), spurious site spectra were recognized at frequencies higher than about 4 Hz. New heat flow data corrected for climate change over Northeastern Japan were obtained using the temperature profile of the borehole of the High Sensitivity Seismograph Network (Hi-net). The obtained spatial distribution of heat flow shows low heat flow on the forearc side, high heat flow along the Ou Backbone Range, and low heat flow in the plains on the back-arc side. However, the distribution is not clearly divided into high and low heat flow along the VF front; for example, the low heat flow extends from near the northern Kitakami Mountains on the forearc side to the Ou Backbone Range crossing the VF, while the high heat flow extends to the central Kitakami Mountains and Sendai plain on the forearc side. In addition, a crustal temperature structure model was developed that considers into account the presence of sedimentary layers, the temperature dependence of thermal conductivity, and differences in heat generation due to lithology. There is a good correlation between this temperature structure and the lower limit of the seismogenic layer, which is between 400 and 450 °C. Compared to previous studies, the crustal thermal structure calculation method assumed is a model whose estimated temperature distribution is sensitive to structural differences; however, a more accurate estimation of the temperature structure is possible if detailed structural information is available. On the other hand, it seems necessary to treat fluid behavior in more detail in areas of high heat flow. Single‐frequency microseisms (SFMs) have been revealed to be only generated in shallow water for decades, while some recent studies reported them in a deep ocean. Using the continuous waveform data recorded by ocean bottom seismometers, we investigate the deep ocean SFMs in the northern Philippine Sea. Based on the spectrum analysis, we find that the SFMs can be detected in deep ocean and the detection is time variable. To determine the source locations of SFMs, we perform polarization analysis and calculate the cross‐correlation coefficients between SFMs on vertical components and ocean wave energy spectra considering the attenuation of SFMs. Both the polarization and correlation results show that the sources nearby stations dominate the observed Rayleigh‐wave SFMs though distant sources also contribute. Our investigation suggests that the SFMs can be generated in a deep ocean likely by infragravity ocean waves interacting with seafloor topography, which is strengthened by strong ocean storms. Those of microseisms have similar periods of 10–20 s as ocean waves are called single‐frequency microseisms (SFMs), which are generally considered to be excited only in shallow water. Here we show that SFMs can be detected in a deep ocean from time to time especially when strong ocean storms impact. Combining the source azimuthal distributions of SFMs as well as the correlations between SFMs and ocean wave energy, we demonstrate that the derived dominating sources of abyssal SFMs are local, mostly nearby stations. The generating mechanism of the local SFMs is likely that long‐period ocean waves strengthened by strong ocean storms impact with the rugged seafloor topography. Fluid migration in subduction zones is a key controlling factor of slow and megathrust earthquakes at plate boundaries. During the migration, seismic velocity and heterogeneous structures in its pathways may be temporarily perturbed, preferably triggering slow earthquakes. Here, we show that transient changes of seismic heterogeneity occurred 0–9 months before shallow slow earthquakes in the Nankai subduction zone, Japan, using very long‐term (6–10 years) records of ambient seafloor noise. The heterogeneity changes preceding to shallow slow earthquakes were observed near the margin of the source region, while concurrent changes primarily occurred in the source region. We propose that the heterogeneity changes are attributed to dynamic fluid migration, and the difference in timings reflects the pore pressure level in the corresponding source region. When fluids are supplied to a source region under relatively low pressure, fluids are leaked out from its downdip or updip side, and slow earthquakes occur not immediately but with a time delay of at most 9 months. In the high pore pressure case, slow earthquakes occur immediately with fluid migration from the source region. This study suggests that the heterogeneous seismic structure is possibly changed by fluid migration before slow earthquakes in the Nankai subduction zone. In this study, we investigated the temporal variations of seismic velocity and heterogeneous structure beneath the seafloor in the Nankai subduction zone, Japan, using the seismographs observed by a permanent cabled network starting in 2010. The intensities of seismic heterogeneous structures change 0–9 months prior to the shallow slow earthquakes, implying that the heterogeneous structure is altered by fluid migration that affects the slow earthquake generation. In the case of the fluid migration preceding to slow earthquakes, fluids are supplied to the source region with relatively low pore pressure levels, and the pore pressure level there increases until the timing of the slow earthquake generation. In contrast, the case of concurrent fluid migration corresponds to the fluids supplied to the source region with a relatively high pore pressure level, and slow earthquakes occur at the immediate timing of the fluid supply. These results suggest that monitoring heterogeneous seismic structures potentially contributes to further understanding of the spatio‐temporal relationship between fluid migration and shallow slow earthquakes. Small-scale seismic velocity heterogeneity has been studied through the calculation of peak amplitude ratio as a means to quantify the strength of seismic wave scattering at volcanoes in Japan. This ratio is defined as the ratio of the maximum (peak) P wave energy in the transverse component seismogram envelope over that of the three-component sum seismogram envelope (transverse + radial + vertical). According to the previous study using Japan's Hi-net seismometer network, the peak ratio is observed to be larger near the (active) quaternary volcanoes. However, these Hi-net stations are not positioned on the volcanoes themselves. This study systematically examines the peak ratios at 47 active volcanoes across Japan, using seismometers operated by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA). Analyses were performed at four frequency bands: 0.5–1, 1–2, 2–4, and 4–8 Hz. We found that the JMA stations yield higher peak ratios than the Hi-net stations. Their differences are statistically significant at the 99.9% confidence level in all frequency bands. We also examined the differences between the ground surface and borehole stations of the JMA network. The former shows larger peak ratios, and for most frequency bands, the differences are also statistically significant at the 99.9% confidence level. This suggests an intensification of small-scale medium heterogeneities especially at shallow depths at active volcanoes, and that scattering might have been enhanced at the very shallow parts. The evolution history of the Sea of Japan back-arc basin remains under debate, involving the opening of sub-basins such as the Japan and Yamato Basins. Detailed knowledge of the lithospheric structure will provide the key to understanding tectonic history. This study identifies the lithosphere–asthenosphere boundary (LAB) beneath the Sea of Japan back-arc basin using S-receiver functions (S-RFs). The study area, including the Japan and Yamato Basins, has been instrumented with broadband ocean-bottom seismometers (OBSs). S-RFs from these OBSs show negative Sp phases preceding the direct S arrivals, suggesting the LAB. The S-RFs also show abnormally reduced amplitudes. For further qualitative interpretation of these findings, we conduct transdimensional Bayesian inversion for S-wave velocity models. This less-subjective Bayesian approach clarifies that the low-velocity seafloor sediments and damped deconvolution contribute to the amplitude reduction, illuminating the necessity of such considerations for similar receiver function works. Inverted velocity structures show a sharp velocity decrease at the mantle depths, which we consider the LAB. The obtained LAB depths vary among sites: ~ 45 km beneath the Japan and Yamato Basins and ~ 70 km beneath the Yamato Rise, a bathymetric high between the two basins. The thick lithosphere beneath the Yamato Rise most likely reflects its continental origin. However, the thickness is still thin compared to that of eastern Asia, suggesting lithosphere extension by rifting. Notably, the Japan and Yamato Basins show a comparable lithospheric thickness, although the crustal thickness beneath the Yamato Basin is known to be anomalously thick. The 2011 M w 9.0 Tohoku-oki earthquake ruptured the subduction megathrust fault in the central Japan Trench. We investigated the aftershock activity in the southern Japan Trench to the south of the main rupture area using ocean bottom seismographs deployed both landward and seaward of the trench. In the trench-outer rise region seaward of the trench axis, we identified several ∼100-km-long linear earthquake trends both parallel and oblique to the southern Japan Trench. The earthquake trend oblique to the southern Japan Trench is a southward extension of the trench-parallel linear earthquake trend in the central to northern Japan Trench. The trench-parallel normal-faults in the trench-outer rise region could extend linearly, despite the change of the trench strike from N–S to NNE–SSW to the south of the main rupture area. Normal-faults oblique to the trench should be considered as substantial parts of large intraplate normal-faulting earthquakes. In addition, intraplate seismicity coinciding with the lower velocity oceanic mantle suggest that the structure heterogeneity would be indicative of normal-faults extending into the mantle. In the trench landward area, earthquake activity showed along-trench variations. Earthquakes along the shallow megathrust interface near the trench were observed south of 37°N. These shallow near-trench regular earthquakes, which are located close to the episodic tremors and temporally correlated with the tremor activities, suggest that the afterslip on the plate interface likely extended to the shallow plate interface close to the trench axis. Smaller spatial scale structure heterogeneity, such as the thickness variation in the channel-like low-velocity sedimentary unit, likely relate to the proximity of the regular earthquakes and slow slip which results in the formation of diverse slip behaviours in the shallow subduction zone of the southern Japan Trench. The 2011 magnitude (M) 9.0 Tohoku-oki earthquake was followed by seismicity activation in inland areas throughout Japan. An outstanding case is the M6.2 Northern Nagano earthquake, central Japan, occurred 13-h after the megathrust event, approximately 400 km away from its epicenter. The physical processes relating the occurrence of megathrust earthquakes and subsequent activation of relatively large inland earthquakes are not well understood. Here we use waveform data of a dense local seismic network to reveal with an unprecedented resolution the complex mechanisms leading to the occurrence of the M6.2 earthquake. We show that previously undetected small earthquakes initiated along the Nagano earthquake source fault at relatively short times after the Tohoku-oki megathrust earthquake, and the local seismicity continued intermittently until the occurrence of the M6.2 event, being likely 'modulated' by the arrival of surface waves from large, remote aftershocks off-shore Tohoku. About 1-h before the Nagano earthquake, there was an acceleration of micro-seismicity migrating towards its hypocenter. Migration speeds indicate potential localized slow-slip, culminating with the occurrence of the large inland earthquake, with fluids playing a seismicity-activation role at a regional scale. This paper describes an efficient approach to high-resolution time-reversal source imaging simulation. Dense seismograph network records are backpropagated from stations to the hypocentre through a 3-D subsurface structure model to estimate the initial source wavefield at the earthquake initiation time. By assimilating high-density observational data into the time-reversal wave propagation, a clearer source image can be determined, even for deep and distant earthquakes, than is achievable with conventional source imaging. The effectiveness of data-assimilation-based source imaging by a time-reversal wave propagation simulation with a 3-D heterogeneous structural model was demonstrated using recordings from a nationwide strong-motion seismograph network during the 2007 Off Niigata, Japan, M w 6.6 earthquake, and the 2007 Off Ibaraki, Japan, M w 6.8 earthquake. Such data-assimilated-based simulations are also effective for early forecasting of strong ground motions caused by large earthquakes through fast time-advancing simulations based on the current assimilated wavefield. We will discuss the feasibility of a disaster prevention system for the early forecasting of strong motion disasters due to large earthquakes, based on repeatedly estimating source parameters and forecasting strong motions in future time based on the current assimilated wavefields. The characteristics of shallow low‐frequency earthquakes (LFEs) are related to stress changes on the shallow plate boundary, which are important for understanding the megathrust earthquake cycle. The 5 September 2004 off the Kii Peninsula earthquakes (MJMA = 7.1, 7.4) occurred near the Nankai trough subduction zone, off southwest Japan. Ocean bottom seismometer observations from 22 September to 30 November 2004 detected many shallow LFEs among the ordinary aftershocks. During the observation period, the frequency of shallow LFEs steadily decayed with the exception of episodic activities, which were very sensitive to stress changes caused by tides and the 23 October 2004 Niigata earthquake (MJMA = 6.8). We also confirmed correlations between shallow LFEs and shallow very low frequency earthquakes, which suggest that these slow events represent the same slip phenomenon. These findings will contribute to clarifying the impact of LFEs on megathrust earthquakes. Volcanic eruptions are sometimes preceded by tilt changes that are an indicator of immediate pre-eruptive processes. In this study, the tilt changes before all monitored eruptions in Japan were surveyed for the first time to address the generality and common features of these signals. An automated procedure was devised to identify tilt changes. The results showed that approximately half of the analyzed eruptions were preceded by tilt changes. Detection ratios depended on station locations, and approximately 10–20% of the total waveforms consisted of detectable tilt changes. Broadband seismic records, when integrated into displacements, showed detection ratios comparable to those of tiltmeter records. The lead times and durations of the tilt changes showed large variations. The durations correlated with amplitudes, although with considerable scatter. Both accelerating and decelerating types of tilt changes were common, and their ratios depended on the volcanoes. These are the first findings on the nature of pre-eruptive tilt changes from many volcanoes, and the waveform analysis procedure proposed in this paper is applicable to other regions. Future works involve extending this study to datasets from other regions, detecting tilt changes from continuous records, applying the proposed method to an early warning system, and detecting longer tilt changes, which require that the proposed approach be improved by subsequent studies. In the northern part of the Japan Trench, the 1933 Showa-Sanriku earthquake (Mw 8.4), an outer-trench, normal-faulting earthquake, occurred 37 yr after the 1896 Meiji-Sanriku tsunami earthquake (Mw 8.0), a shallow, near-trench, plate-interface rupture. Tsunamis generated by both earthquakes caused severe damage along the Sanriku coast. Precise locations of earthquakes in the source areas of the 1896 and 1933 earthquakes have not previously been obtained because they occurred at considerable distances from the coast in deep water beyond the maximum operational depth of conventional ocean bottom seismographs (OBSs). In 2015, we incorporated OBSs designed for operation in deep water (ultradeep OBSs) in an OBS array during two months of seismic observations in the source areas of the 1896 and 1933 Sanriku earthquakes to investigate the relationship of seismicity there to outer-rise normal-faulting earthquakes and near-trench tsunami earthquakes. Our analysis showed that seismicity during our observation period occurred along three roughly linear trench-parallel trends in the outertrench region. Seismic activity along these trends likely corresponds to aftershocks of the 1933 Showa-Sanriku earthquake and the Mw 7.4 normal-faulting earthquake that occurred 40 min after the 2011 Tohoku-Oki earthquake. Furthermore, changes of the clarity of reflections from the oceanic Moho on seismic reflection profiles and low-velocity anomalies within the oceanic mantle were observed near the linear trends of the seismicity. The focal mechanisms we determined indicate that an extensional stress regime extends to about 40 km depth, below which the stress regime is compressional. These observations suggest that rupture during the 1933 Showa-Sanriku earthquake did not extend to the base of the oceanic lithosphere and that compound rupture of multiple or segmented faults is a more plausible explanation for that earthquake. The source area of the 1896 Meiji-Sanriku tsunami earthquake is characterized by an aseismic region landward of the trench axis. Spatial heterogeneity of seismicity and crustal structure might indicate the near-trench faults that could lead to future hazardous events such as the 1896 and 1933 Sanriku earthquakes, and should be taken into account in assessment of tsunami hazards related to large near-trench earthquakes. The Japan Sea is a part of the western Pacific trench-arc-backarc system and has a complex bathymetry and intense seismic activities in the crust and upper mantle. Local seismic tomography revealed strong lateral heterogeneities in the crust and uppermost mantle beneath the eastern margin of the Japan Sea, which was determined using P and S wave arrival times of suboceanic earthquakes relocated precisely with sP depth phases. Ambient-noise tomography revealed a thin crust and a thin lithosphere beneath the Japan Sea and significant low-velocity (low-V) anomalies in the shallow mantle beneath the western and eastern margins of the Japan Sea. Observations with ocean-bottom seismometers and electromagnetometers revealed low-V and high-conductivity anomalies at depths of 200–300 km in the big mantle wedge (BMW) above the subducting Pacific slab, and the anomalies are connected with the low-V zone in the normal mantle wedge beneath NE Japan, suggesting that both shallow and deep slab dehydrations occur and contribute to the arc and back-arc magmatism. The Pacific slab has a simple geometry beneath the Japan Sea, and earthquakes occur actively in the slab down to a depth of ∼600 km beneath the NE Asian margin. Teleseismic P and S wave tomography has revealed that the Philippine Sea plate has subducted aseismically down to the mantle transition zone (MTZ, 410–660 km) depths beneath the southern Japan Sea and the Tsushima Strait, and a slab window is revealed within the aseismic Philippine Sea slab. Seismic anisotropy tomography revealed a NW-SE fast-velocity direction in the BMW, which reflects corner flows induced by the fast deep subduction of the Pacific slab. Large deep earthquakes (M > 7.0; depth > 500 km) occur frequently beneath the Japan Sea western margin, which may be related to the formation of the Changbai and Ulleung intraplate volcanoes. A metastable olivine wedge is revealed within the cold core of the Pacific slab at the MTZ depth, which may be related to the deep seismicity. However, many of these results are still preliminary, due to the lack of seismic stations in the Japan Sea. The key to resolving these critical geoscientific issues is seismic instrumentation in the Japan Sea, for which international cooperation of geoscience communities in the East Asian countries is necessary. The nationwide strong-motion seismograph network of K-NET and KiK-net in Japan successfully recorded the strong ground motions of the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake sequence, which show the several notable characteristics. For the first large earthquake with a JMA magnitude of 6.5 (21:26, April 14, 2016, JST), the large strong motions are concentrated near the epicenter and the strong-motion attenuations are well predicted by the empirical relation for crustal earthquakes with a moment magnitude of 6.1. For the largest earthquake of the sequence with a JMA magnitude of 7.3 (01:25, April 16, 2016, JST), the large peak ground accelerations and velocities extend from the epicentral area to the northeast direction. The attenuation feature of peak ground accelerations generally follows the empirical relation, whereas that for velocities deviates from the empirical relation for stations with the epicentral distance of greater than 200 km, which can be attributed to the large Love wave having a dominant period around 10 s. The large accelerations were observed at stations even in Oita region, more than 70 km northeast from the epicenter. They are attributed to the local induced earthquake in Oita region, whose moment magnitude is estimated to be 5.5 by matching the amplitudes of the corresponding phases with the empirical attenuation relation. The real-time strong-motion observation has a potential for contributing to the mitigation of the ongoing earthquake disasters. We test a methodology to forecast the regions to be exposed to the large shaking in real time, which has been developed based on the fact that the neighboring stations are already shaken, for the largest event of the Kumamoto earthquakes, and demonstrate that it is simple but effective to quickly make warning. We also shows that the interpolation of the strong motions in real time is feasible, which will be utilized for the real-time forecast of ground motions based on the observed shakings. We try to detect an unidentified signal from the surface motion at northeastern Japan immediately after the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. A focused frequency range is 10-100 mHz (10-100 s). We find a peaky signal with frequency of about 38 mHz (26 s) based on the horizontal-tovertical (H/V) spectral ratio using the high-rate GNSS data at 382 GEONET stations. We are not able to identify locality of the signal. The signal appears several minutes after the passing of surface wave fronts. The duration of the signal is about 2min. Since the origin of the 38 mHz signal is unlikely to be local hydrologic tremors, tectonic tremors, or the tsunami, we speculate that the 38 mHz signal originates from a kind of a characteristic oscillation of Northeastern Japan triggered by the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. A normal-mode simulation implies that highorder radial overtones could create the signal with a spherically-layered velocity structure, however, the detailed mechanism of the signal still remains a mystery. Seismic prevention issues are discussed much more seriously around the world after Fukushima earthquake, Japan, April 2011, especially for those countries which are near the earthquake zone. Approximately 1.8×1012 kilograms of explosive energy will be released from a magnitude 9 earthquake. It destroys most of the unprotected infrastructure within several tens of miles in diameter from the epicenter. People can feel the earthquake even if living hundreds of miles away. This study is a seismic simulation analysis for an innovated and improved design of viscoelastic damping isolator, which can be more effectively applied to earthquake prevention and damage reduction of high-rise buildings, roads, bridges, power generation facilities, and so forth, from earthquake disaster. Solidworks graphic software is used to draw the 3D geometric model of the viscoelastic isolator. The dynamic behavior of the viscoelastic isolator through shock impact of specific earthquake loading, recorded by a seismometer, is obtained via ANSYS finite element package. The amplitude of the isolator is quickly reduced by the viscoelastic material in the device and is shown in a time response diagram. In this study, the crustal and uppermost mantle shear wave velocities beneath the Japanese islands have been determined by inversion from seismic ambient noise tomography using data recorded at 75 Full Range Seismograph Network of Japan broad-band seismic stations, which are uniformly distributed across the Japanese islands. By cross-correlating 2 yr of vertical component seismic ambient noise recordings, we are able to extract Rayleigh wave empirical Green's functions, which are subsequently used to measure phase velocity dispersion in the period band of 6–50 s. The dispersion data are then inverted to yield 2-D tomographic phase velocity maps and 3-D shear wave velocity models. Our results show that the velocity variations at short periods (∼10 s), or in the uppermost crust, correlate well with the major known surface geological and tectonic features. In particular, the distribution of low-velocity anomalies shows good spatial correlation with active faults, volcanoes and terrains of sediment exposure, whereas the high-velocity anomalies are mainly associated with the mountain ranges. We also observe that large upper crustal earthquakes (5.0 ≤ M ≤ 8.0, depth ≤ 25 km) mainly occurred in low-velocity anomalies or along the boundary between low- and high-velocity anomalies, suggesting that large upper crustal earthquakes do not strike randomly or uniformly; rather they are inclined to nucleate within or adjacent to low-velocity areas. Abstract: Very-long-period (VLP) pulses with widths of 20s on velocity seismograms were observed during volcanic activity at Miyake-jima Volcano, Japan in 2000. The VLP events occurred repeatedly during a few days prior to caldera formation and essentially vanished following the onset of caldera collapse. Waveform inversions of the pulse-like signals point to a source offset 3.5km beneath and 1km south of the summit. A candidate for the source mechanism is the inflation of an elliptical cylinder with axis tilted 20–30° from vertical and major axis of the elliptical cross section oriented northeast-southwest. The inferred mechanism appears consistent with a step-like pressurization of a magma reservoir impacted by a falling rock mass in response to gravitational instability. Abstract: Understanding the spatial distribution of earthquake-induced landslides from specific earthquakes provides an opportunity to recognize what to expect from future events. The July 16, 2007 Mw 6.6 (MJMA 6.8) Niigata Chuetsu–Oki Japan earthquake triggered hundreds of landslides in the area surrounding the coastal city of Kashiwazaki and provides one such opportunity to evaluate the impacts of an offshore, magnitude 6+ earthquake on a steep coastal region. As part of a larger effort to document all forms of geotechnical damage from this earthquake, we performed landslide inventory mapping throughout the epicentral area and analyzed the resulting data for spatial, seismic-motion, and geologic correlations to describe the pattern of landsliding. Coupled with examination of a third-party, aerial-photo-based landslide inventory, our analyses reveal several areas of high landslide concentration that are not readily explained by either traditional epicentral and fault–plane-distance metrics or by recorded and inferred ground-motions. Whereas average landslide concentrations averaged less than 1 landslide per square kilometer (LS/km2), some areas reached up to 2LS/km2 in the Nishiyama Hills to the northeast of Kashiwazaki and between 2 and 11LS/km2 in coastal areas to the north and south of the city. Correlation with seismometer-based and monument overturning back-calculated ground motions suggests that a minimum peak ground acceleration (PGA) of approximately 0.2g was necessary for landsliding throughout the region, but does not explain the subregional areas of high landslide concentration. However, analysis of topographic slope and the distribution of generally weak, dip-slope, geologic units does sufficiently explain why, on a sub-regional scale, high landslide concentrations occurred where they did. These include: (1) an inland region of steep, dip-slope, anticlinal sedimentary strata with associated fold belt compression and uplift of the anticline and (2) coastal areas with generally weaker, weathered outcrop lithology and steeper slopes resulting from active marine and terrestrial cliff processes. We observed seismic events consisting of several one-sided velocity pulses with durations of 5-30 s (hereafter called very-long-period or VLP pulses) using up to 14 broad-band seismometers installed near the summit area of Asama volcano, Japan. Particle motions do not point to a single source location despite their rectilinearities, suggesting a non-isotropic source mechanism, together with path effect. We conducted moment-tensor inversion analyses for these events using the Green's functions of not only translational motions but also of tilt motions. The best-fitting source locations are located north of the crater centre, at depths of 100-150 m below the crater bottom. The principal value ratios of moment-tensor solutions can be approximated as 5:3:2, which is indicative of a combination of a tensile crack and a cylinder, with the strike and dip angle of the crack both being nearly 70°, and symmetry axis of the cylinder being inclined by nearly 30° from the vertical. The time histories of moment-tensors are indicative of an initial sudden pressurization and subsequent gradual depressurization at the source region. We sought to model VLP pulses at Asama volcano by considering the inflow and outflow of gas at the source cavity, compensated by boiling in another deeper reservoir. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: A slope 120m wide and 100m high collapsed including the roadbed of a national highway of Route 168 at Ohto, Nara, Japan on August 10, 2004. The precursory phenomena of abnormal features were found as cracks growing on the road-side slope 7months before the catastrophe. The movements of the slope were monitored by extensometers. The data of the extensometers showed that creep mode turned from the secondary into the tertiary due to the heavy rainstorm of Typhoon Namtheun. The slide claimed no victims because the highway was closed 43h before the catastrophe, anticipating a possible hazard when the creep velocity reached 4mm/2h. Comparison of rupture time predictions suggested that precision of the prediction using the reciprocal of creep velocity is higher than that by tertiary creep analysis, although leaving a problem that the prediction of the time zone of failure erred on the dangerous side. The slide generated ground vibration which was observed by seismometers deployed around the slide. Duration of the seismic signals corresponded well with the slide motion deciphered from video records. We found the fact that the seismic energy radiation from a landslide consisted of four stages. This had not been reported in any previous study, and may be important in understanding the dynamics of a rock-slide avalanche. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: A very-long-period (VLP) volcanic event, which occurred on 25 January 2007 beneath Mt Ontake, central Japan, was recorded by nearby broadband seismometers as well as the Japanese nationwide Hi-net and F-net seismic networks. The VLP waveforms show a pulse-like shape with a duration of approximately 1min. The VLP event was accompanied by a burst sequence of long-period (LP) events. We carried out waveform inversion to determine the source mechanism and location of the VLP event. Our analysis indicates volumetric changes in an inclined crack (seismic moment of 1014 Nm) at the VLP source, which is located at 0.6km above sea level beneath the summit of Mt Ontake and above dikes determined from GPS data. The source-time functions of the VLP event showed a pulse-like triangular shape, indicating inflation followed by deflation of the crack at the source. We interpreted the result of the waveform inversion as follows. Gases released from the intruded magma heated an aquifer system beneath the summit of Mt Ontake. A break of unstable superheated water in a hydrothermal crack in the system caused vaporization of water and associated crack inflation, which was followed by discharge of steam from the crack resulting in its collapse. These processes caused the VLP event, which may have been a precursor of a small phreatic eruption that occurred in late March 2007. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Interplate coupling in the southernmost extent of the northeast Japan subduction zone (east off-Kanto, Japan) is investigated in detail using a large data set of small repeating earthquakes. In this region of the trench-trench-trench type triple junction, the subducting Pacific plate is in contact with two different overlying plates (the North American and Philippine Sea plates). The border between the two overlying plates extending northwestward from the triple junction is identified along the upper surface of the Pacific plate based on the slip vectors of many interplate events including small repeating earthquakes. The interplate coupling coefficient estimated from the cumulative slip of small repeating earthquakes for the period from 1993 to 2007 reveals a distinct change from south (ca. 0.3) to north (ca. 0.7) across the border. This border also corresponds to the southern limit of the source areas of M>7 interplate earthquakes in the last 80 years along the Japan trench, again indicating the stronger coupling to the north. We also investigate hypocenter distribution and seismic velocity structure along the plate boundary from a large number of travel-time data obtained from the nationwide seismograph network. The results reveal a distinct low-velocity zone just above the Pacific plate and low seismicity along the plate boundary in the region overlain by the Philippine Sea plate, whereas there are no low-velocity zones and the seismicity is high in the region overlain by the North American plate. Abstract: Large earthquakes have repeatedly occurred in the area off southeastern Hokkaido Island, Japan, as the Pacific Plate subducts beneath the island, which is on the North American Plate. The most recent large earthquake in this area, the 2003 Tokachi-oki earthquake (Mw=8.0), occurred on September 26, 2003. In order to investigate aftershock activity in the rupture area, 47 Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBSs) were quickly deployed after the main shock. In the present study, we simultaneously estimate the hypocenters and 3-D seismic velocity models from the P- and S-wave arrivals of the aftershocks recorded by OBSs. The subducting plate is clearly imaged as a northwest dipping zone in which Vp is greater than 7 km/s, and the relocated hypocenters also show the subducting Pacific Plate. The aftershock distribution reveals that the dip angle of the plate boundary increases abruptly around 90 km from the Kuril Trench. The bending of the subducting plate corresponds to the southeastern edge of the rupture area. The island arc crust on the overriding plate has P-wave velocities of 6–7 km/s and a Vp/Vs of 1.73. A region of Vp/Vs greater than 1.88 was found north of the epicenter of the main shock. The depth of the high Vp/Vs region extends about 10 km upward from the plate interface. The plate boundary just below the high Vp/Vs region has the largest slip at the main rupture. A high Vp anomaly (~7.5 km/s) is found in the island arc crust in northeast part of the study area, which we interpret as a structural boundary related to the arc–arc collisional tectonics of the Hokkaido region, as the rupture of the main shock terminated at this high Vp region. We suggest that the plate interface geometry and the trench-parallel velocity heterogeneity in the landward plate are principal factors in controlling the rupture area of the main shock. Abstract: The Tsushima Basin is located in the southwestern Japan Sea, which is a back-arc basin in the northwestern Pacific. Although some geophysical surveys had been conducted to investigate the formation process of the Tsushima Basin, it remains unclear. In 2000, to clarify the formation process of the Tsushima Basin, the seismic velocity structure survey with ocean bottom seismometers and airguns was carried out at the southeastern Tsushima Basin and its margin, which are presumed to be the transition zone of the crustal structure of the southwestern Japan Island Arc. The crustal thickness under the southeastern Tsushima Basin is about 17 km including a 5 km thick sedimentary layer, and 20 km including a 1.5 km thick sedimentary layer under its margin. The whole crustal thickness and thickness of the upper part of the crust increase towards the southwestern Japan Island Arc. On the other hand, thickness of the lower part of the crust seems more uniform than that of the upper part. The crust in the southeastern Tsushima Basin has about 6 km/s layer with the large velocity gradient. Shallow structures of the continental bank show that the accumulation of the sediments started from lower Miocene in the southeastern Tsushima Basin. The crustal structure in southeastern Tsushima Basin is not the oceanic crust, which is formed ocean floor spreading or affected by mantle plume, but the rifted/extended island arc crust because magnitudes of the whole crustal and the upper part of the crustal thickening are larger than that of the lower part of the crustal thickening towards the southwestern Japan Island Arc. In the margin of the southeastern Tsushima Basin, high velocity material does not exist in the lowermost crust. For that reason, the margin is inferred to be a non-volcanic rifted margin. The asymmetric structure in the both margins of the southeastern and Korean Peninsula of the Tsushima Basin indicates that the formation process of the Tsushima Basin may be simple shear style rather than pure shear style. Seismic observations to retrieve various information from the Earth are the basis of seismology. A seismic observation system requires various technologies for vibration sensors, analog-and-digital measurement, data transmission, and computing for mass data analysis, for example. New developments in technology are adopted whenever possible in the construction of seismic observation systems. In Japan, after the disastrous Kobe Earthquake in 1995, a high-density and high-sensitivity seismograph network was constructed. The seismic network, called the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED) Hi-net, uniformly covers the Japanese Islands with a spacing of 20–30 km. As a result, the detection capability for microearthquakes has been greatly improved, and various research using Hi-net data has indicated that this seismic network has a great potential to resolve the underground structure and various geophysical phenomena as a radar-array oriented toward the Earth. In 1997, a seismic experiment using an airgun array and ocean bottom seismographs (OBSs) was performed in the forearc region of the northeastern Japan (NEJ) arc. The objectives of this experiment were to clarify seismic structures of the forearc region off Sanriku, Japan using airgun–OBS data and to understand the nature of the Japan trench seismogenic zone. Fundamental features of the structure are as follows:(i)The subduction angle becomes steeper from east to west, from 3 to 8 to 11°, with the top of the plate located at depths of 11 km (40 km west from the trench), 21 km (120 km west from the trench) and 28 km (140 km west from the trench), respectively.(ii)The NEJ Moho beneath the forearc is defined at a depth of approximately 20 km.(iii)P-wave velocity of the island arc upper mantle is approximately 8 km s−1.(iv)TheP-wave velocity of the Cretaceous sedimentary layer exhibits significant lateral variability (4.0–5.5 km s−1) in the E–W direction.(v)The upper crust of NEJ forearc also has the significant lateral heterogeneity (5.0–6.3 km s−1) in the E–W direction, but not in the N–S direction.(vi)The middle crust defined on land extends in some locations 40 km east of the coastline.(vii)Lateral variability in theP-wave velocity of the lower crust (6.7–7.0 km s−1) is small compared with that of the upper crust.According to these results, it is suggested that the rupture areas of large earthquakes (>M7) in this region are limited within the contact zone between the NEJ arc crust and the subducting oceanic crust. Although a thin layer with low velocity is probably present within this contact zone, the serpentinization of uppermost mantle wedge of the NEJ arc by reaction between the mantle materials and the water from the thin layer beneath forearc region is limited. Along the Nankai trough, southwestern Japan, the Philippine Sea plate (PSP) is subducting beneath the Eurasian plate, and large interplate earthquakes have occurred repeatedly with a recurrence interval of about 100–200 years. The most recent large thrust event in the eastern Nankai trough off Kii Peninsula was the 1944 Tonankai earthquake. In this region, current seismicity is very low and hypocenters are not determined accurately by the land seismic network. We conducted microseismicity observations around the rupture area of the 1944 Tonankai earthquake using ocean bottom seismographs (OBSs). Hypocenters were determined using a 2-D seismic velocity structure model based on an airgun-OBS seismic survey. Results obtained show that the seismicity was relatively active near the trough axis. These earthquakes may relate to deformation of the subducting Philippine Sea plate. On the other hand, microseismicity in the rupture area of the 1944 Tonankai earthquake was very low. This low-level seismic activity in the co-seismic rupture area of the 1944 Tonankai earthquake likely relates to a single large asperity off Kii Peninsula. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We delineate shallow structures of the Mozumi–Sukenobu fault, central Japan, using fault zone waves generated by near-surface explosions and detected by a seismometer array. Two explosive sources, S1 and S2, were placed at a distance of about 2 km from the array, and the other two, S3 and S4, were at a distance of about 4 km. Fault zone head waves and fault zone trapped waves following direct P wave arrivals were clearly identified in the seismograms recorded by a linear seismometer array deployed across the fault in a research tunnel at a depth of 300 m. Synthetic waveforms generated by a 3-D finite-difference (3-D FD) method were compared with observed fault zone waves up to 25 Hz. The best fitting model indicates a 200-m-wide low-velocity zone extending at least to shot site S1 located 2 km east of the seismic array with a 20% decrease in the P wave velocity relative to the wall rock. The width of the low-velocity zone is consistent with the fault zone defined by direct geological observation in the research tunnel. However, the low-velocity zone should disappear just to the east of the site S1 to explain the observed fault zone waves for shot S3 and S4 located 4 km east of the seismometer array. Yet the observation and the simulation show notable trapped wave excitation even though shots S3 and S4 are outside the fault zone. These results indicate that (1) the effective waveguide for seismic waves along the fault does not exist east of source site S1 although the surface traces of the fault are observed in this region, and (2) considerable trapped waves can be excited by sources well outside the fault zone. The article presents the observations of the 2011 Tohoku-Oki Earthquake at 19 ocean bottom seismometers (OBS) sites located off Miyagi region. The researchers retrieved 17 OBS from March to November 2011 in emergency research cruises. The retrieved OBSs have recorded the seismic wave data, which were used for relocation of the hypocenters of the foreshock, mainshock, and aftershocks.

Shallow slow earthquakes have been documented along shallow plate interfaces near trenches. Recent geophysical observation networks located offshore of Japan enable us to analyze shallow tremors in the Nankai Trough and the Japan Trench. Onshore seismic stations are also important for detecting shallow very low frequency earthquakes (VLFEs) and for evaluating their seismicity prior to the deployment of offshore observation networks. This study analyzes data from ocean bottom seismometers to estimate the seismic energy radiation of such tremors, from which we observe along-strike heterogeneity. Tremors with higher seismic energy rates tend to have longer recurrence intervals, which has also been observed for deep tremors. This study also estimates seismic moment releases of shallow VLFEs at the Japan Trench observed by onshore seismic stations using Green's function in a local three-dimensional seismic velocity model. The scaled energy, which is the ratio of the seismic energy (rate) to the seismic moment (rate), is ~10−9. Shallow slow earthquakes located off the Kii Peninsula and Cape Muroto in the Nankai Trough have higher values (10−9–10−8), while shallow slow earthquakes located off the Kii channel in the Nankai Trough and in the Japan Trench have lower values (10−10–10−9), which are similar to the values estimated for deep slow earthquakes. By comparing the cumulative seismic energy of the shallow tremors with the cumulative seismic moment of shallow VLFEs, we evaluate the monitoring of shallow tremors and shallow VLFEs in the Japan Trench, suggesting that monitoring shallow VLFEs based on data from onshore seismic stations could miss many (~90% at most) of the seismic moment releases by small magnitude but frequent events. • Shallow tremor seismic energy rates exhibit significant along-strike variations. • Tremors with higher energy rates tend to have longer recurrence intervals. • Shore-based monitoring could underestimate shallow slow earthquake activity. We have identified "N"-shaped Y/X amplitude spectral ratios in S-coda records from a significant number of OBSs (ocean bottom seismometers) belonging to in-line-type ocean bottom networks of S-net and ETMC deployed around the Japan Trench and Sagami Trough, respectively. The "N"-shape reflects a sharp peak and notch at approximately 5–13 Hz and 10–23 Hz, respectively. This shape does not characterize OBSs belonging to node-type ocean bottom network of DONET deployed near the Nankai Trough. For S-net stations, the "N"-shape is not clearly formed for stations installed within grooves dug in the seafloor. We interpret the "N"-shaped Y/X amplitude spectral ratio is caused by the natural vibrations of a cylindrical pressure vessel that is placed sideways (long-axis lies in the horizontal plane) on the seafloor. The notch and peak frequencies in the Y/X amplitude spectral ratio likely correspond to natural frequencies of longitudinal (X-direction) and torsional and/or bending (Y-direction) vibrations, respectively. These natural vibrations are not observed for buried OBSs or those installed within grooves in the seafloor probably because they are better coupled to the seafloor. We propose a simple model to evaluate the extent to which the peak and notch have formed, which depends on the natural frequencies and coupling of the pressure vessel. We suggest users of in-line-type OBSs carefully examine if there are different responses between the X and Y components when frequencies about > 3 Hz are used. When installing OBS networks in the future, installing OBSs and cables within grooves dug in the seafloor or by burial will be effective in suppressing such natural vibrations. The predictability of catastrophic earthquakes according to data on time variations in tidal response is discussed. We present the results of a harmonic analysis of (1) a one-year record of tide-gauge observations with the use of two long-term vertical seismometers at the MAJO station on Honshu Island near the epicenter of the M = 9 catastrophic earthquake of March 11, 2011, and (2) a 0.5-year record of horizontal pendulum observations at the ERM station near Hokkaido Island from March 13, 2010, to March 12, 2011, and from April 26, 2010, to August 3, 2010, respectively. The relative changes in the tidal amplitudes are found to be about 3 and 4%. The identification of distinct prognostic attributes awaits much more representative spatiotemporal statistics. These results can be adequately and reliably interpreted by analyzing 'background' variations in the tidal amplitudes at these stations and, in particular, their possible seasonal variations. The region off the Boso Peninsula, Japan, is a tectonically complex area where the Pacific plate is subducting beneath both the landward plate and the Philippine Sea plate (PHS) from the Japan trench and the Izu-Bonin trench as the PHS is subducting under the landward plate from the Sagami trough. It is important to better determine the structure of this region to deepen our understanding of its seismicity. Previous seismic reflection studies have shown that reflections from the upper surface of the PHS vary with depth, being stronger in the main slip area of the slow slip events beneath the Boso Peninsula (Boso SSEs). However, the spatial relationship between the reflective area and the SSEs is poorly constrained. This study mapped the distribution of the reflective area using data recorded by ocean bottom seismometers during an active-source seismic experiment. We constructed a 3D P-wave velocity structure by using traveltimes of first arrivals from 18 ocean bottom seismometer records. We also adapted the traveltime mapping method to reflection traveltimes, projecting them to the depth–distance domain, to map the 2D distribution of strong reflections from the top of the PHS. These reflections were concentrated in two areas, one near the main slip area of the Boso SSEs and the other about 60 km to the east. In the first area, the absence of strong velocity contrasts near the top of the PHS suggests that the reflections were generated by a thin low-velocity layer. In contrast, the structure of the second area has a convex shape of high velocity with a high velocity gradient near the top of the PHS. This structure may represent boninitic material of the outer-arc high, partially serpentinized peridotite, or gabbro displaced by intraoceanic reverse faults. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We investigate S-wave attenuation (Qs) structure in and around Hokkaido, Japan, including the source area of the 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake (M 6.7) and its aftershocks. From the strong-motion seismograms recorded in the nationwide seismograph network in Japan, we compute spectrum amplitude at 1–10 Hz with every 1 Hz and then estimate Qs structure by adopting tomographic inversion technique. The obtained Qs structure suggests that lateral variations of Qs are remarkably formed in the study areas. The low-Qs anomalies distributing north to south are imaged in both sides of the Hidaka mountain range which is built in the central Hokkaido. These characteristics structures of Qs are extended from the ground surface to depths by about 50 km, indicating that heterogeneous structures resulted from the collision of the Kuril and northeastern Japan arcs develop at the depth ranges. Around the source area of the 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake, the abrupt changes of Qs values are identified. The 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake and its aftershocks seem to be arraigned on the high-Qs zones, whereas the low-Qs anomalies are also imaged next to the high-Qs zones. The boundary of the low- and high-Qs zones lies with near vertical, corresponding to aftershock distributions of the 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake. This agreement would propose that the heterogeneities formed due to the arc–arc collision would characterize faulting processes in the main shock of the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake and the activities of its aftershocks. The source rupture process of the 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi earthquake was investigated by performing a joint inversion analysis using the strong motion and geodetic data. A fault model that consists of two fault planes was constructed by considering the relocated aftershock distribution and the focal mechanisms. The inversion result showed that the large slip occurred at approximately 22 km depth, which was much shallower than the hypocentral depth. Our results showed that the rupture initiated on the minor fault plane around the hypocenter and the major fault plane started to rupture 4–6 s after the rupture initiation. Although the shape of the minor fault plane has not been clearly determined, the major fault plane appears to be high-angle, east-dipping. An additional inversion with only the major fault plane showed that the strong ground motion near the source was mainly generated from the major fault plane. The total seismic moment estimated by the inversion with the two fault-plane model was 1.1 × 1019 Nm, which yielded an Mw of 6.6. Using the inversion result of the two fault-plane model, we simulated the ground surface and borehole waveforms at strong motion station IBUH03 where the large velocity pulse was observed on the ground surface. The simulations suggest that this large velocity pulse was generated from the combination of the large slip of the source and large site amplification of the velocity structure between the ground surface and borehole seismometers.
