The article discusses data security measures for telecommuting. The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), which runs 14 telework programs, maintains a secure private network connection through which telecommuters can access the application server of the agency. Data is encrypted during its transmission across the network. A number of U.S. agencies also train employees before they are allowed to work at home to prevent security breaches. Installation of firewall technology and other data security measures recommended by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management and the General Services Administration are cited.
