Creative writing is a discipline that originated in the United States. In the process of its introduction into Chinese universities, it must undergo debugging and transformation from the perspectives of local writing traditions and university curriculum systems, otherwise it cannot fully play its distinctive role. This article is a reflection on the teaching experience of creative writing at Sichuan University in recent years. It explores possible methods of large-class teaching, the mutual promotion of writing and classical reading, and the group training mode of writing classes with the same style and materials in the process of localizing creative writing education. In addition to sharing specific teaching experiences, it also reflects on how creative writing education can connect with Liberal Arts Education and promote the humanistic atmosphere on campus in contemporary Chinese colleges. Anti-Black racism has plagued the United States since the birth of the nation. It is apparent in acts of violence, in individual interactions, and in the systems that create and maintain our society. Psychology has evolved from promoting racist theories to exploring implicit biases and the effects of racism on the physical and mental health of marginalized communities. In light of recent social unrest following the death of an unarmed Black man due to police brutality, psychology's organizations have published statements condemning racism. This article explores the connections between values espoused by the Black Lives Matter movement and humanistic psychology and argues that statements against racism are not sufficient. An entrenched assumption in the mental health field is that if left "untreated" the aftermath of sexual assault will inevitably lead to some diagnosable form of emotional distress. This assumption has focused the search for pathology on individual survivors rather than systems and led to societal pressure for medical or psychotherapeutic treatment following unwanted sexual experiences in the United States and globally. Humanistic psychology is grounded in an existential phenomenological approach that privileges agency and a sociopolitical context of lived experience. As such, it has great overlap with the social justice mission of liberation psychology and is well equipped to respond to sexual assault survivors and the oppressive and patriarchal systems that perpetuate gender-based violence. This article explores the rising use of neoliberal medicalized frameworks to respond to sexual assault in therapy, analyzing both positive and negative aspects of medicalization. Implications for responses to the global prevalence of sexual violence are discussed. Suggestions for alternative epistemic and therapeutic approaches that can be used by humanistic psychologists and that aim to enhance an appreciation for the context of survivor's experiences are provided. In this essay, I argue that sociology programs should offer curricular opportunities for undergraduate students to study the actual mechanics of social change in the form of explicit training in the philosophies and practices of community organizing and direct action. That training, I assert, is separate from a content‐driven approach to the study of social movements, or the inclusion of community‐based research courses. Grounded in an analysis of the roots of the discipline of U.S. sociology as situated in the practice of empirically informed democratic engagement, I shift the focus away from a debate over whether or not critical pedagogy is, or should include, activism. Instead, I focus on the extent to which our students are, in practice, learning concrete organizing skills to change power relations, regardless of the content area or pedagogical style. In doing so, I bring back into the conversation a tradition that the profession seems to have forgotten, and think of ways in which contemporary sociology programs in the United States can better contribute to the advancement of a grassroots, or a humanistic public sociology. In this article, the author discusses the relationship of progressive politics to humanistic psychology in the Trump/Coronavirus era. The harsh realities of personal fears and severe challenges to our mental health evoked by both the United States presidency of Donald Trump and the coronavirus pandemic are described initially. Then, a number of self-care practices that are consistent with the basic values of humanistic psychology and that we can undertake to help us meet these harsh realities are illustrated. Next, the author describes his own personal engagement and self-care in the world of progressive politics and humanistic psychology in the context of the Resisting Trump movement. The article concludes with the author suggesting that perhaps it may be worthwhile for politically like-minded others to also consider finding ways of merging their progressive politics with humanistic psychology in order to enhance their self-care through these turbulent times in the Trump/Coronavirus era. Objective: To better understand the humanistic and economic burden of focal seizures in children 2-12 years old. Methods: We conducted a targeted literature review by searching MEDLINE for English-language publications reporting on children 2-12 years old with focal seizures published in the United States since 2008. Results: Thirty-five publications were included. Incidence of focal seizures was 23.2 to 47.1 per 100,000 children per year; prevalence was 2.0 per 1,000 children, and ranged from 1.6 - 2.6 per 1,000 in patients of any age. Life expectancy was 47.3-61.8 years among children 3-12 years old. Patients took several antiepileptic drugs and experienced frequent seizures, sleep disorders, mood disorders, migraine, and seizure-related injuries (eg, bone fractures, sprains, open wounds). Children with focal seizures scored below average on cognitive assessments and up to 42%, 16%, and 19% had depression, anxiety, and attention-deficit disorder, respectively. Patients of any age had about 10 outpatient visits (2 epilepsy-related), 2 inpatient visits (less than 1 epilepsy-related), and 24 procedures (1 epilepsy-related) per year. Medication adherence was low: only half of pediatric patients maintained ≥90% adherence over 6 months. Annual total health care costs among patients of any age ranged from $18,369 - 38,549; first-year total health care costs for children were $19,883. Conclusions: Incidence and prevalence of focal seizures is high and the humanistic and economic burdens are significant. Future studies focused exclusively on children with focal seizures are needed to more precisely describe the burden. We also suggest further research and implementation of methods to improve medication adherence as an approach to lessen burden on these young patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Courtrooms in the United States whether family court or criminal court fall far short of being either developmentally or trauma sensitive. While there is growing recognition that vulnerable child witnesses are at risk of retraumatization by court procedures and some judges have used their discretionary powers to render courtrooms less toxic to children, the system was designed by adults for adults, and certainly not for children. The court process especially in criminal trials does not typically take into account the developmental constraints of children nor do they fully understand trauma in children and the risks to testifying child witnesses. Humanistic psychology has long stood for social justice and compassion toward our most vulnerable humans, especially children, but the long and slow-to-change traditions of the court system in the United States creates an environment that is inhospitable to children and even older victims as illustrated by the low rate of prosecutions in rape cases. This article outlines the distressing conditions that await child victims/witnesses in this country in comparison with other developed countries and an innovative, out-of-the box solution that does not interfere with the rights of the accused. Positive psychology is a developing discipline of psychology, particularly originated from the United States, that focuses on positive aspects of human lives. The objective of this paper is to highlight some of the cultural and methodological challenges in developing positive psychology as a universal science. This paper first explores the roots of positive psychology in the Eastern philosophical/spiritual traditions and then explores the possibility of reconciliation between positive psychologists and humanistic and cross-cultural psychologists on two major issues - universality of positive psychology and positivist methodology in the inquiry process. It also evaluates the methodological approaches followed by positive psychological researchers in their inquiry process and their applicability/appropriateness in diverse cultural contexts. This paper concludes that as envisaged by the founders of positive psychology movement, there is a possibility of positive psychology being developed as a universal science that transcends cultural boundaries, if positive psychology scholars, rather than utilizing the Western conceptualization of the positive psychology constructs, use mix method approach while conceptualizing and capturing the constructs. This paper utilizes a humanistic psychology theoretical framework and pays attention to the rampancy of anxiety affecting youth in the United States. This paper intends to explore the phenomena of anxiety and discuss how it could be perceived as an opportunity for growth if approached in a constructive way. Though much attention, professionally and in popular American culture, has been accorded to midlife angst and turmoil, no published research has been conducted on peak-experiences during this major lifespan period. In this study, 153 people aged 40 to 65 years in the United States responded to a questionnaire asking them to describe a recent joyful experience and its subsequent impact on their outlook on life. They were also asked to rate it numerically on a 5-point Likert-type scale. Their qualitative reports were subsequently coded into 13 categories. Peaks involving interpersonal joy were reported significantly most frequently, more than all other categories combined. These were followed in frequency by those comprising respectively external achievement and personal growth. Small percentages involved religious peaks in either institutional or noninstitutional settings, recovery from illness/accident, nature, skill mastery, philosophical musing, developmental landmark, homecoming, nostalgia, and serenity. The article presents the author's response to the comment of Paul Wong to his articles on humanistic psychology in the U.S. The author notes that he and Wong agree on the significance of science and research, and irrelevance of empirically supported treatments. This article begins as a lamentation over the historical demise of humanistic psychology programs in the United States and considers the critiques and alternatives to the humanistic tradition proposed during such transitions. The article isolates the core elements of the premodern humanistic tradition, outlines the central features of the cultural trend referred to as modernity, and shows how modernity has provided the fuel for most of the major critiques of and alternatives to the humanistic tradition. The article then shows how modernity has even influenced the way that humanistic psychology has appropriated its own premodern tradition. The article concludes with six concrete suggestions for reclaiming humanistic psychology from modernity hopefully setting it on a sounder, more valid, and potentially more effective course for the future. The experiential humanistic family systems approach of Virginia Satir lacks a theoretical structure and is thus vulnerable to losing its experiential nature and being reduced to a mere collection of creative techniques. A way to effectively keep Satir's transformative presence alive is to integrate her approach with a model that is solidly grounded in explicit theory, relationship principles, and therapeutic skills and processes. The model proposed as appropriate to this effect is Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT). A number of medication trials at major U.S. research universities are now, once more, legally exploring psychedelics' vast potential for treating various physical and psychological problems. These studies have been approved based on a medical model that considers psychedelics' effects as primarily biochemical, but some are also addressing wider humanistic and transpersonal implications for research and praxis. These studies may challenge the prevailing medical model of psychopathology that not only reduces humans to just their biology but also has led to widespread medical treatments through formularies that predominantly constrict, rather than enhance, human potential. As the rates of suicide in America continue to rise, suicide recently has been declared to be a national public health concern. The crisis intervention model, which has dominated the treatment of suicidal individuals in America since the 1950s, is currently believed to be the most effective model for suicide intervention. This study examined this belief by taking a more complex look at professionals' responses to suicidal clients both by investigating the existence of different ways in which professionals interpret the crisis intervention model. In one interpretation (the"fight"response), the professional takes power and agency away from the client and does what is perceived to be"best"for the client. An alternate interpretation, the"ideal"response, allows for a respectful engagement with the client. Professionals also can act contrary to the model (i.e., the"flight"response). In addition, based on the humanistic notion that clients are the experts of their own experience and that their voices are a very valuable part of evaluating the treatment process, this study investigated which response style clients report to be most helpful and most desired. The results suggest that while the typical response of mental health professionals to suicidal clients is most characteristic of the"fight"response style, clients overwhelmingly report that the contrasting"ideal"response style is most helpful.
