This article uses critical media literacy to approach themes of sexism and gender inequality depicted in the 2023 film Barbie. Teachers cognizant of the need to address women's rights issues in American history often struggle to find resources that are accessible and meaningful for their students. Furthermore, the use of film in social studies instruction can be an engaging and culturally relevant way for students to grapple with contentious issues in social studies education. Additionally, by using human rights concepts to frame inequality and inspire advocacy, teachers can address dimensions of oppression and inequality with a more 'neutral' or objective framing. Given the current political climate that instills fear in educators who teach about issues of gender, strategic approaches can empower social studies teachers to engage students in examinations of this contentious topic in American schools. Lastly, this article introduces perspectives of Black feminists and international activists to provide intersectional analyses of women's rights issues to curb the common emphasis on White feminism. The lesson plan offered in this article includes a film viewing guide, enrichment opportunities, and an activity that connects themes in Barbie with women's rights movements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AbstractAs an increasing number of states mandate or consider the incorporation of Asian American history into school curricula, educators and curriculum developers are actively responding to this growing demand. Recognizing the transnational nature of Asian American history and the explanatory power of Asian Critical (AsianCrit) Theory in addressing this complexity, I advocate for the pedagogical effectiveness of a human rights framework. This framework provides a valuable scaffold for students’ learning and the development of a transnational perspective. After reviewing multiple typologies of Human Rights Education, I propose that the C3 Inquiry framework offers a robust model for implementing Human Rights Education. This approach provides a comprehensive strategy for teaching about, through, and for human rights within the context of teaching and learning about Asian American history. The engagement of social workers with human rights is deeply embedded in the history of the profession and discipline. Therefore, incorporating human rights into social work curricula is paramount. However, comparative research on the integration of human rights in Europe is largely missing. This article addresses the gap by analyzing curricula in eight European countries. It is based on a symposium organized by the Special Interest Group on Human Rights in Social Work within the European Association of Schools of Social Work in 2022. The article focuses on three questions: What explicit references to human rights can be found? How are human rights linked to political and structural aspects? In what form is the significance of human rights for social work practice considered? The analysis encompassed the curricula of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Poland, Austria, Ireland, the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, and Finland. It shows that human rights are an integrated component within all degree programs in these countries, albeit in different forms and to different extents. However, the critical analysis also shows significant shortcomings, e.g. missing emphasis on human rights topics within the curriculum and insufficient consideration of the practical applicability of human rights. AbstractThis article provides a theoretical foundation to argue for an effective and meaningful realization of human rights education in school curricula and beyond. Despite emerging research on a content-related basis and large-scale initiatives, the practical realization of human rights education is mostly still a desideratum. By analyzing relevant documents by the United Nations (UN), particularly the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UNGA, 1948), this paper shows that human rights education is a human right itself. Upon joining the UN, member states pledged to provide human rights education to all citizens. However, the question what it means to ensure the right to human rights education is complex because the concept of ‘right’ is ambiguous. Thus, this manuscript logically analyzes the right to human rights education by means of Kanger’s theory of rights that encompasses a classification of all possible types of right. The analysis shows that the right to human rights education consists of two complex types of right that contain both a claim right as well as service rights. The author concludes that in order to meet the obligations of the UN Charta, UN member states are required (1) to provide mandatory human rights education in compulsory education and (2) to grant access to human rights education to all citizens. It is known among social work educators that training students about human rights is not only a mandate of the profession’s governing bodies but a desirable goal. While the notion of giving voice to the marginalized is not new to social work and is assumed to be a critical element of social justice, it is not always clear how best to manifest this in pedagogy and practice. This article introduces a training model that incorporates human rights and social work values and ethics. Based on participatory action research by ATD Fourth World, an anti-poverty organization, this training is led by people with lived experience of poverty and of child protection services in the UK. As lay experts and co-creators of knowledge, they guide students to a deeper understanding of the multiple dimensions of poverty and the impact of social work on their lives. This training challenges the power differentials typically embedded in client-clinician relations and focuses on the values underlying social work. This paper analyses one particular experience of Human Rights Education at the university environment: the "Seminar on Justice and Human Rights" at the National University of Lanús, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The course is compulsory and cross-cutting for students taking undergraduate and undergraduate degree courses at that institution. The general objective of this research was to find out how cis women, cis men and the LGBTIQ+ community experienced this type of training spaces. The analysis was carried out from the perspective of the participants, especially the students, which is a fundamental and understudied approach in this field. The methodology used was mixed: both, 1703 student surveys conducted in the period 2017-2022 and three semi-structured interviews with teachers during 2023, were analysed. Among the main results, it was observed that the cis-male group showed less interest in gender issues and in the fact that there is this type of compulsory education at the university environment, compared to the other groups. In addition, it was noted that the different groups are questioned differently, depending on the topic in question. This article explores how legal academics approach sensitive topics in human rights law, specifically how content is chosen, curated and discussed with students. It draws on data collected as part of a small pilot study which looked at how human rights academics approach "controversial" topics and how their views on controversy and sensitivity may be reflected in their curriculum. It focuses on the wider debate around trigger warnings in higher education and explores how academics use them. It concludes that, despite their negative reputation, "trigger warnings" can play a necessary and welcome role in navigating sensitive material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The international human rights framework and United Nations' Agenda 2030 with its Sustainable Development Goals are two closely linked frameworks. Agenda 2030 has galvanized much interest and action within the education sector around Education for Sustainable Development. The human rights framework, with its calls for Human Rights Education, provides a legal imperative for embedding these pedagogies in education. This article argues that for the education sector, unifying actions and embracing the two pedagogies of Education for Sustainable Development and Human Rights Education can form a foundation for a new social contract for education. For these frameworks to meet their potential in education, they must be embedded at both curricular and institutional levels. This paper examined the extent and nature of safety for teachers in their different school settings and further underscored the importance of safety for teachers in the school context. The current school environment is violent owing to the increasing lack of teachers’ ability to maintain order in schools due to the uncertain alternatives to corporal punishment. This creates a hostile learning environment that weakens the teachers’ position of power and prohibits them from using their authority and fulfilling their duty to provide learners with compassionate monitoring. A qualitative interpretivist research paradigm was used in this study employing Critical Emancipatory Research (CER) as a research framework. A CER framework aims to strengthen the liberating, enlightening, emancipating, and empowering democratic values of equality and justice among the researcher and the participants in the research setting. A team of four teachers, a principal, and the School Governing Body (SGB) member from each school were purposively sampled to apply the principles of PAR in Lejweleputswa District in the Free State Province in South Africa. A focused group was employed to answer the following questions: What are the perceptions of secondary school teachers regarding their safety in the school setting? To what extent does learners’ violent behaviour threaten teachers’ safety at schools? And, how can teachers be assisted to change their minds regarding Human Rights Education as a tool for peaceful education? Data was analysed thematically. The findings of this research showed that teachers do not feel safe at their workplace, they fear both learners and parents who most of the time come to humiliate them physically and emotionally in front of their learners. The study contributes to a debate on the safety of teachers in schools for professional development.

AbstractNowadays, media platforms are a catalyst for sculpturing a society’s mindset. Especially within a societal context characterized by skepticism towards the culture of human rights, the proliferation of misinformation has exerted a detrimental impact on public sentiment, thereby amplifying skepticism towards the culture of human rights. The objective of this study is to examine the misuse of media platforms in the dissemination of misinformation regarding the culture of human rights. The paper offers a legal analysis of our case study regarding the controversy surrounding the Jordanian child rights draft law. The paper analyses the practice of disseminating misinformation via media platforms through three main lenses: discourse, trust, and social practice. It also examines the intersection between these lenses through the example of the Jordanian child rights draft law controversy.

This paper explores the relationship between education and diversity from a different perspective as compared to the current human rights education-based discourse on the subject matter. Instead of portraying education as the means and respect for diversity as the end, the focus rather lies on a concept of education that incorporates diversity as one of its fundamental conditions. I argue that Wilhelm von Humboldt's concept of diversity as an integrated component of his educational idea(l) of Bildung precisely follows this line of argumentation. In the spirit of Humboldt, exposure to diversity is both a necessary and a sufficient condition for Bildung. Since Humboldt neither explicitly outlined nor systematized his argument, this paper reconstructs and interprets his line of thought. By juxtaposing contemporary policy papers on human rights (education) with Humboldt's educational theory, rooted in his original work, this paper opens a new – even though more than 200 years old – outlook on diversity and education. Design-Based Research (DBR) has emerged as a widely accepted methodological framework in educational research worldwide, as it is a sustainable research paradigm for overcoming the frequently observed gap between research and educational practice (Reinmann, 2022; Tinoca et al., 2022). I use The Rights of the Child and the School Subject of Religious Education (CRE4RE) project as an illustrative example of DBR's potential to help close the theory-practice gap in the area of children's rights education (CRE) in religious education (RE). To do so, I link classroom research and lesson design. The first part of the paper provides an overview of the three interdependent project phases, which are based on the three steps of the research process model by McKenney and Reeves (2019). In the second part, I transfer a teaching module into practice to demonstrate how children's rights perspectives can be successfully integrated into RE. Finally, I identify project-specific opportunities and challenges in the use of the DBR approach to point out further design-based research perspectives, which favor a sustainable practical transfer of the double theory-practice output. I transferred a prototyped learning module into RE and tested and empirically evaluated it in a sample of N = 88 children and found substantial differences in the empathy scale's mean values, which also differed by gender. The article shows how a DBR approach can be used to integrate CRE into RE, thereby also highlighting the forward-looking significance of the research paradigm for RE and for the interlinking of teaching research and lesson design. This study explores the intersection of rights consciousness, rights mobilisation and cultural capital among high school pupils of low socioeconomic status. The research design comprised interviews with Israeli pupils who completed a human rights education (HRE) unit in civic studies. The findings indicated that the vast majority of pupils demonstrated a developed rights consciousness and noted that the HRE studies assisted them in naming rights violations. However, pupils articulated various reasons for their reluctance to mobilise rights, including communal norms, lack of trust in adults and institutional systems, apprehension of the implications, and considering the process unfeasible. We conceptualise pupils' perceptions of their rights as reflecting a sense of constraint, which frames rights mobilisation as privileged and distanced. This sense of constraint sheds light on the crucial role of cultural capital in pupils' rights consciousness and rights mobilisation, thus extending our understanding of how social location should shape HRE pedagogies. Based on the authors' wide reading in the field, this article suggests the notion of the narrative as a fitting and meaningful way of conceptualising and mapping the field of comparative education. Four prominent narratives can be identified in not only the field of comparative education (and the scholarly discourse on education) but also the public discourse on education. These are the narratives of the capability theory, neoliberal economics, the creed of human rights, and the call for social justice. These narratives are contrasted, and guidelines are offered for further research on reconstructing and reflecting on the current state of comparative education and its future trajectory. The Armenian Memory Project (AMP) is a collaborative effort designed to harness the energy and resources of the University of Connecticut and the New England Armenian community for the goal of fostering greater understanding of the region's Armenian cultural heritage and the impact human rights crimes had on the Armenian community. In 2019, students and faculty from the university worked with Armenian American institutions and individuals on an initial component of the AMP, employing digital media technology to tell the story of one immigrant Armenian family, the Dildilians. A unique course was created to produce a documentary film centring around this family's experiences in Ottoman Turkey before, during, and after the Armenian Genocide. Designed and taught by a documentary filmmaker with support from a family archivist/historian, the course brought students together in a collaborative learning experience. By immersing themselves in the family's extensive photograph archive, these students came to understand the important role that the past continues to play in the lives of present-day Armenians. Furthermore, by taking on the responsibility as storytellers of the Dildilian narrative, students developed a deeper identification with this distant history and, in a wider sense, an appreciation for the ethical value of memory in bearing witness to the past. This collaborative and participatory framework for teaching using archival collections can serve as a model for creating a transformative learning experience in the study of human rights, war, and genocide. This article aims to investigate Human Rights Education in the “COVID & Human Rights” course on the Amnesty International app. In order to achieve this objective and this guiding question, a professional and four volunteer activists from Amnesty International were interviewed. In terms of theoretical foundation, the dimensions of the Body and sociodigital Inclusion were analyzed, through Amnesty International's Human Rights Education course. As considerations for the moment achieved, the great proximity between EDH and the Body category stands out, as well as the relevance of Sociodigital Inclusion for the advancement of an Education that is increasingly less exclusionary. Finland has repeatedly been presented as a "success story" of equality and education, promoter of human rights and included equality and human rights as part of national curricula. However, research has shown the slow progress of integrating topics of equality and human rights in teacher education despite hundreds of project-based interventions during the past 50 years. We used historically informed discursive reading drawing from the existent literature, human rights and equality policy documents, and data from student teachers (n = 311) about their perceptions. The theoretical framework in this article is grounded in critical and feminist theories. The aim is to analyse why student teachers still report receiving too little education in human rights and equality despite the improvements in human rights and equality education law and policy. We argue that Finnish teacher education has an ambivalent role of representing itself as "exceptional" while reproducing inequalities. Furthermore, this alleged "exceptionalism" does not enable a focus on equality and human rights policies goals. We constructed a general theoretical frame to re-examine critically the role of ambivalence, ignorance, and "innocence", which reproduce inequalities. Our analysis describes several discursive realities of public narratives and student teachers' experiences concerning equality and human rights education. This article provides a novel interpretation frame for the persisting inequalities in education in a country that profiles itself as a champion of human rights and equality. This study assesses the effect of conceptual change pedagogy on students’ attitudes toward pluralism and related rights within culturally sensitive contexts. Global efforts to address the spread of intolerant ideologies that foment radicalization, discrimination, and violence are fraught with controversy. Prior research on the Middle East and North Africa region has found that efforts to address these challenges in the field of education — including reform to curricula, the promotion of narratives inclusive of religious diversity, and civics education initiatives — have had varied levels of success. Absent from these efforts is the development of an effective pedagogy and the training of teachers to identify and address ideologies and behaviors that foment intolerance and conflict among students. Hardwired Global developed a teacher training program based on conceptual change theory and pedagogy to fill these needs. Conceptual change refers to the development of new ways of thinking and understanding of concepts, beliefs, and attitudes. Hardwired Global implemented the program in partnership with the regional Directorate of Education for Mosul and the Nineveh Plains region of Iraq from 2019–2023. From 2021–2023, Hardwired trained 485 teachers in 40 schools across the region. Following the training, teachers implemented two lessons. A mixed method research study — with a primary focus on quantitative data collected — was conducted to determine the effect of the program on student perceptions, understanding, and behavior toward key concepts inherent to pluralism. Quantitative data consisted of a pre-post survey with four multiple choice questions. Scores on pre-surveys were compared to post-surveys and a two sample paired t-test was applied. We documented statistically significant developments in students’ conceptual understanding of key concepts inherent to pluralism and associated rights, including: respect for diversity in expression inclusion of diverse religious and/or ethnic communities, gender equality, and violent or non-violent approaches to conflict. Qualitative data consisted of semi-structured interviews with teachers and students implemented at the conclusion of the program and observations reported by Master Trainers and teachers during training and activity implementation. Findings suggest conceptual change pedagogy on pluralism and associated rights is a promising approach to education about controversial topics in conflict-affected and culturally sensitive environments. This mixed-methods study examines the human rights and human rights education and training (HRET) perspectives and practices of law educators in Myanmar during the democratic transition that ended with the 2021 coup. "Contextual, Theoretical, and Methodological Framing" provides an overview of legal and human rights education in Myanmar, discusses the potential of human rights education in law schools during democratic transitions, addresses why educators' human rights and human rights education perspectives and practices are important to examine, and presents the research methodology. "Findings" presents findings based on the two phases of research during the transitional period: phase 1 (2015–2017)—law instructors' perspectives and practices after participating in a multi-year HRET program; and phase 2 (2019–2020)—law instructors' perspectives on the goals, challenges, and potential of HRET in Myanmar. The third section—"Discussion and Implications"—examines the contextual challenges and opportunities for human rights education as related to (1) critical human rights education, (2) practice-oriented HRET, and (3) administrative policies and practices for human rights and HRET within universities. This study investigates how human rights education (HRE), a global movement and citizenship education model based on universal personhood rather than nationality, is presented and negotiated in relation to national citizenship discourses in South Korean middle school moral education and social studies textbooks. Using qualitative methods of textual analysis, I identify four recurring approaches consistently used in textbooks to educate students about human rights: (1) distinguishing between universal human rights and national constitutional rights, (2) emphasizing duties to the national community, (3) accommodating both global and national identity through a discourse of achieving harmony and (4) demonstrating continuity between universal and national moral values. Over several years, the German/Sri Lankan NGO VisAbility has been pioneering a mix of inclusive dance with rights education and advocacy to empower persons with conflict-related, physical impairments, first in Sri Lanka and, more recently, in Nepal. This work recovers the perspective of racial justice from Afro-Latin American studies to delve into the pedagogical praxis in human rights from the perspective of human rights and peoples, within the migrant movements of sub-Saharan Africa, in Brazil and Argentina. We develop the research from qualitative perspectives, oral history, collaborative ethnographies and participatory research, views that allow us to propose the processes of co-investigation or co-construction of knowledge together with the subjects themselves who suffer rights violations and who fight for justice. racial. The enclosed population study evaluated administrator and instructor awareness and performance ratings concerning application of national standards specific to global citizenship curricula as set forth by Curaçao's Ministry of Education, Science, Culture, and Sports. Two compelling outcomes were detected; first, teachers and principals reported similar observations relative to a) awareness and performance on standards; and second, significant statistical differences were detected concerning performance when the data were filtered by public versus private schools. The implication is that Curaçao's primary school system is indeed administering the Ministry's prescribed national standards within their primary schools; however, differential levels of performance are evident between public versus private schools which in turn provides evidence of underlying casual factors. Therefore, an overarching finding is that these disparate results between public and private schools relative to performance on global citizenship curricula portends pending social inequities in student knowledge and awareness of global citizenship principles. In response to the rapidly rising number of asylum applications, student-run asylum clinics (SRACs) designed to provide pro bono forensic medical evaluations have emerged at medical schools across the United States. Distinct from traditional student-run clinics in the services they provide and in their operational models, SRACs face a unique set of challenges. This study aims to identify the common challenges in building SRACs and to collect insights to inform a structured approach to collaborative problem-solving. This study gathered data from online surveys and semi-structured phone interviews with representative medical student SRAC leaders. 14 clinics participated in the 2017 online survey, 15 clinics in the 2018 online survey, and eight clinics in the 2018-2019 phone interviews. We identified common challenges in five areas: volunteer recruitment, clinic operations, case demand, institutional support, and leadership. SRACs stand to benefit from ongoing extramural collaborations to overcome shared challenges.

Human rights education (HRE) is an urgent historically and globally recognized challenge for societies. However, it has not been sufficiently addressed by empirical and theoretical research in education. Based on the UN Declaration on Human Rights Education and Training (UNDHRET), there is wide agreement that HRE should include education about, through, and for human rights. We argue that a situated deliberative pedagogy can offer these three dimensions to HRE. However, this is not without challenges for teachers and students. One way to deal with these challenges and support this pedagogical innovation is to design curriculum material that supports teachers. To contribute to this, we conducted a design-based research (DBR) aimed at participative designing of educative curriculum material for human rights deliberative education. Four teachers participated in two phases of the study. Two participated in refining the material's structure and its controversies and the other two participated in discussing the dilemmas and activities relating to implementation of the material at school with their 11th- and 12th-grade students. The results show participatory educative curriculum material designed for holistic HRE: about, through, and for HR. The implications and problems of the design process associated with a deliberative curriculum for HRE are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aims to evaluate prospective teachers' views on the elective Human Rights and Democracy Education course taught in the Faculty of Education. This study was conducted based on a mixed-methods approach. For this purpose, the opinions of 144 students who took and did not take this course were evaluated according to the branch, gender, and class variables using the "Attitude Scale towards Human Rights Education." In addition, the views of 10 students on the effectiveness, importance, and recommendations of the course were collected through focus group interviews. According to the results obtained, there was a statistically significant difference in the Education of Human Rights Field scores based on whether the students took the course or not, but there was no significant difference in the Human Rights in Education Environment scores in terms of department, gender, and class level. Through the methodologies of critical reflexión and autoethnography, the author illustrates how border/transformative pedagogies and Anzaldúa's concepts of nos/otras and new tribalism proved useful in efforts to dismantle color- and colonial-blind ideologies, abstract liberalism, and binary and oppositional thinking among members of a graduate seminar in social justice and human rights. Investments in these discourses and unquestioned philosophical commitments to them limited seminars members' ability to openly talk about racism, sexism, homophobia, and colonialism. Applying the principles of border/transformative pedagogies, nos/otras, and new tribalism required hard work, in-depth reflexión, and deep listening to each other. As a result of this praxis, some members of the seminar were able to name their philosophical and political positions to work across what seemed to be insurmountable borders. In doing so, seminar members were able to begin to build bridges among multiple intersectional identities and philosophical positions.
