The development of facile and cost-effective strategies for hydrogels with multifunctionality is of great scientific interest. In this work, a series of poly (vinyl alcohol)/tannic acid (PVA/TA) composite hydrogels were facilely prepared by gamma radiation of a PVA solution and subsequent soaking treatment in TA solutions. The chemical composition, transparency, microstructure, mechanical property and antibacterial activity of the resulting composite hydrogels were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), UV-Vis spectroscopy, SEM, tensile measurements and an antibacterial test, respectively. The introduction of TA into the gamma radiation-induced chemically cross-linked networks of PVA hydrogels via the soaking treatment, which forms the second physically cross-linked networks, endows the PVA hydrogels with improved mechanical performance. The tensile strength, toughness and elongation at break of the composite hydrogel were increased by 1500 % (from 18 kPa to 254 kPa), 3600 % (from 8.5 kJ m−3 to 315 kJ m−3) and 360 % (from 87 to 403 %), respectively. Meanwhile, high transparency of the neat irradiated PVA hydrogels was maintained in the obtained composite hydrogels (transmittance over 60 % at 660 nm). The strong hydrogen bonding interaction between PVA and TA within the networks serves as sacrificial bonds and suppresses the crystallinity of the PVA hydrogels. In addition, the composite hydrogels also possess superior antibacterial activity against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. This work provided a simple approach for the construction of multifunctional hydrogels on large-scale preparation, thus would hopefully promote their applications in biomedicine, wound dressings and soft devices. The titanium-based lithium ion-sieve (H 2 TiO 3 , abbreviated as HTO) is considered one of the most promising adsorbents for liquid phase lithium extraction technology because of its environmental friendliness and low cost. However, the actual lithium adsorption capacity of HTO is far from the theoretical maximum due to the sluggish kinetics of Li+ and H+ exchange influenced by the lamellar structure. Herein, we introduce a cobalt and nitrogen co-doped H 2 TiO 3 lithium ion-sieve (abbreviated as Co/N-HTO-LIS). It has been demonstrated that the doped Co atoms partially replace Ti sites in native lattice while allochthonous N atoms prefer occupying interstitial positions, thereby modifying the crystal structure and increasing the adsorption sites. Additionally, doping Co and N in HTO can create more oxygen vacancies to facilitate the ion diffusion process. Benefiting from the synergistic effect between heteroatoms modification and oxygen vacancies mediation, Co/N-HTO-LIS exhibits excellent performance in terms of lithium extraction with a lithium adsorption capacity of 46.17 mg g−1 in simulated brine (lithium 1100 mg/L) at 20 °C. This value is significantly higher than that of cobalt-doped HTO (41.28 mg g−1) and undoped HTO (30.58 mg g−1). Furthermore, batch experiments demonstrate that Co/N-HTO-LIS also possesses good stability and selectivity. A photonics-assisted joint radar detection and microwave frequency measurement system is proposed. A broadband dual-chirp linear frequency-modulated (LFM) signal is generated based on an optically injected semiconductor laser, which is later shared by two functional modules. Thanks to the photonics-assisted broadband signal generation method, both radar detection with high resolution and microwave frequency measurement with high accuracy can be realized without using high-speed electronic devices. Drift velocity and driving force are not directly proportional in the case of inhomogeneous suspensions, where a space dependent mobility induces an additional contribution to the drift velocity. Similarly, particle flux and drift velocity are related not only by the gradient of density but also by an additional contribution given by the gradient of the self-diffusion coefficient. We provide quantitative support to this scenario in a non-equilibrium system by means of computer simulations with a temperature gradient. Moreover, our simulation results demonstrate that the temperature gradient-induced mass transport coefficient, namely thermal diffusion coefficient, is not directly proportional to the drift velocity so that the well-accepted relation of proportionality is just an approximation. An active system consisting of many self-spinning dimers is simulated, and a distinct local rotational jamming transition is observed as the density increases. In the low density regime, the system stays in an absorbing state, in which each dimer rotates independently subject to the applied torque; while in the high density regime, a fraction of the dimers become rotationally jammed into local clusters, and the system exhibits microphase-separation like two-phase morphologies. For high enough densities, the system becomes completely jammed in both rotational and translational degrees of freedom. Such a simple system is found to exhibit rich and multiscale disordered hyperuniformities among the above phases: the absorbing state shows a critical hyperuniformity of the strongest class and subcritically preserves the vanishing density fluctuation scaling up to some length scale; the locally jammed state shows a two-phase hyperuniformity conversely beyond some length scale with respect to the phase cluster sizes; the totally jammed state appears to be a monomer crystal, but intrinsically loses large-scale hyperuniformity. An external diffusive mass flux is shown to be able to generate a mechanical torque on a microscale object based on anisotropic diffusiophoresis. In light of this finding, we propose a theoretical prototype micro-turbine driven purely by diffusive mass flux, which is in strong contrast to conventional turbines driven by convective mass flows. The rotational velocity of the proposed turbine is determined by the external concentration gradient, the geometry and the diffusiophoretic properties of the turbine. This scenario is validated by performing computer simulations. In this work, polyamide 66/polyphenylene oxide (PA66/PPO) composites, including the flame retardants 98 wt% aluminum diethylphosphinate + 2 wt% polydimethylsiloxane (P@Si), Al(OH)3-coated red phosphorus (RP*), and glass fiber (GF), were systematically studied, respectively. The limiting oxygen index (LOI), UL-94 vertical burning level, and thermal and mechanical properties of the PA66/PPO composites were characterized. The results showed that the P@Si and RP flame retardants both improved the LOI value and UL-94 vertical burning level of the PA66/PPO composites, and PA66/PPO composites passed to the UL-94 V-0 level when the contents of P@Si and RP* flame retardants were 16 wt% and 8 wt%. On the other hand, the mechanical properties of the PA66/PPO composites were reduced from a ductile to a brittle fracture mode. The addition of GF effectively made up for these defects and improved the mechanical properties of the PA66/PPO composites containing the P@Si and RP*, but it did not change the fracture mode. P@Si and RP* flame retardants improved the thermal decomposition of PA66/PPO/GF composites and reduced the maximum mass loss rates, showing that the PA66/PPO/GF composites containing the P@Si and RP* flame retardants could be used in higher-temperature fields. We consider a nanodimer in solution with asymmetric thermal properties that shows self-propelled motion. One monomer of the nanodimer can be heated to a fixed temperature producing a radially symmetric temperature gradient. The thermophoretic properties of the second monomer produce then a propulsion against or toward the heated particle, such that the nanodimer becomes a puller or pusher nanoswimmer. We combine our simulation measurements with a theoretical analysis that satisfactorily characterizes the self-propelled velocity with the temperature gradient, and the thermophoretic properties of the bead. Living cells on a substrate with mechanical inhomogeneities often migrate along or against the mechanical gradient, i.e., mechanotaxis, which inspires us to ask how biomimetic cells without biochemical signaling processes respond to environmental inhomogeneity. Here, we perform computer simulations to study the migration of a 2D active colloidal cell (ACC), which consists of active particles enclosed by a passive vesicle, in a heterogeneous environment composed of two adjoining uniform regions with different attributes (influencing the persistent length of the active particle). We find that the ACC can migrate unidirectionally across the interface separating the heterogeneous region and behave tactically. Interestingly, the tactic motion of the ACC is qualitatively different from that of the constituent active particles themselves. In addition, the ACC may also experience a directed drift along the interface of the heterogeneous environment. The tactic behavior of the ACC can be explained by analyzing the pressure distribution on the cell membrane exerted by the enclosed active particles. Chemotaxis plays a crucial role in the realization of various functions of human life such as fertilization, immune function, inflammatory response, regeneration processes, etc. Inspired by the natural chemotaxis, colloidal motors with chemotactic ability can realize intelligent sense and targeted navigation, which bring a revolutionary method to biomedical applications like precision medicine. However, the application in the biomedical field requires the colloidal motors with submicrometer scale, strong chemotactic ability and clear chemotactic mechanism. In this Concept article, we introduce the recent progress of chemotactic colloidal motors, covering the fundamental theory behind experimental advancements. Particularly, the torque‐driven reorientation motion of the submicrometer‐sized colloidal motors during chemotaxis is discussed, and also their underlying mechanism is proposed. With the continuous research on chemotactic colloidal motors, it is believed that the emerging chemotactic colloidal motors will broaden practical applications in the biomedical field. HIPS-g-MAH compatibilizer and the other three compatibilizers were prepared and added to the polyamide 66/polyphenylene oxide (PA66/PPO) alloy. The FT-IR spectra showed that the maleic anhydride (MAH) had successfully undergone grafting on the high impact polystyrene (HIPS). The effect of the MAH ratio in the HIPS-g-MAH compatibilizer, the HIPS-g-MAH compatibilizer weight ratio, and the PA66/PPO ratio on the mechanical properties of PA66/PPO alloy was systematically studied. The results showed that the PA66/PPO alloy possessed the optimal mechanical properties when the HIPS-g-MAH compatibilizer weight ratio was 7% and the MAH ratio in HIPS-g-MAH compatibilizer ranged 4% ~ 8%. The fracture morphologies of PA66/PPO alloy with different HIPS-g-MAH compatibilizer weight ratios were characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM). The PA66/PPO alloy without HIPS-g-MAH compatibilizer showed a typical brittle fracture. The mechanical properties of PA66/PPO alloys with the HIPS-g-MAH compatibilizer were improved. In addition, the crystallization temperature of PA66/PPO alloy decreased with the increase in the HIPS-g-MAH compatibilizer weight ratio. These streamlined flasklike colloidal motors are prepared by combining a hydrothermal synthesis and a vacuum infusion and can be propelled by an enzymatic cascade reaction in the glucose fuel. Their flasklike architecture can be used to recognize their moving posture, and thus the dynamic glucose‐gradient‐induced alignment and orientation‐dependent motility during positive chemotaxis can be examined experimentally. Stimulus‐responsive hydrogels are of great significance in soft robotics, wearable electronic devices, and sensors. Near‐infrared (NIR) light is considered an ideal stimulus as it can trigger the response behavior remotely and precisely. In this work, a smart flexible stimuli‐responsive hydrogel with excellent photothermal property and decent conductivity are prepared by incorporating MXene nanosheets into the physically cross‐linked poly(N‐isopropyl acrylamide) hydrogel matrix. Because of outstanding photothermal effect and dispersion of MXene, the composite hydrogel exhibits rapid photothermal responsiveness and excellent photothermal stability under the NIR irradiation. Furthermore, the anisotropic bilayer hydrogel actuator shows fast and controllable light‐driven bending behavior, which can be used as a light‐controlled soft manipulator. Meanwhile, the hydrogel sensor exhibits cycling stability and good durability in detecting various deformation and real‐time human activities. Topological edge flow and dissipationless odd viscosity are two remarkable features of chiral active fluids composed of active spinners. These features can significantly influence the dynamics of suspended passive particles and the interactions between the particles. By computer simulations, we investigate the transport phenomenon of anisotropic passive objects and the self-assembly behavior of passive spherical particles in the active spinner fluid. It is found that in confined systems, nonspherical passive objects can stably cling to boundary walls and are unidirectionally and robustly transported by edge flow of spinners. Furthermore, in an unconfined system, passive spherical particles are able to form stable clusters that spontaneously and unidirectionally rotate as a whole. In these phenomena, strong particle-wall and interparticle effective attractions play a vital role, which originate from spinner-mediated depletion-like interactions and can be largely enhanced by odd viscosity of spinner fluids. We became aware that a relevant Ref. [1] (namely, Ref. 63 in the article[2]) was omitted from the result part "ACC filled with linear active Brownian particles" of the article (specifically, in the last paragraph of the right column on p. 7), although it was cited in another place (in the first paragraph of the right column on p. 5). In its conclusion part, the authors suggested that active bodies inside a container moving in a gradient of activity can give rise to chemotactic motion of the container, which is similar to a special case among our many systems, i.e., the ACC filled with linear active Brownian particles in the inhomogeneous self-propelled force environment. We report robust control over the dynamic assembly, disassembly, and reconfiguration of light‐activated molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) colloidal motor swarms with features not possible in equilibrium systems. A photochemical reaction produces chemical gradients across the MoS2 colloidal motors to drive them to move. Under illumination of a gradient light, these colloidal motors display a positive phototactic motion. Mesoscale simulations prove that the self‐diffusiophoresis induced by the locally consumed oxygen gradient across MoS2 colloidal motors dominates the phototactic process. By programming the structured illumination, the collective migration and well‐defined shapes of colloidal motor swarms can be externally regulated. We quantify the mean potential energy of a passive colloidal particle harmonically confined in a bacterial solution using optical traps. We find that the average potential energy of the passive particle depends on the trap stiffness, in contrast to the equilibrium case where energy partition is independent of the external constraints. The constraint dependence of the mean potential energy originates from the fact that the persistent collisions between the passive particle and the active bacteria are influenced by the particle relaxation dynamics. Horizontal flow of discrete objects through a bottleneck is prevalent and important in nature and industry. In this paper, we experimentally investigate the frictional effect of the bottom wall on the flow rate of granular particles passing through an aperture on a conveyor belt, since the bottom wall is always assumed to be trivial and the issue remains elusive. The flow rate monotonically increases with the coefficient of friction, finally approaching a saturation plateau. The bottom wall has an obvious effect on the flow rate. We show that the lateral motion of particles on both sides of the aperture, which is influenced by the coefficient of friction and can be converted into an effective aperture width, is responsible for the variation of the longitudinal flow rate. Our findings may provide a new way to manipulate the horizontal flow rate, particularly for the case where the aperture has to be fixed. Polyamide 1010 (PA1010) is a representative of long-chain polyamides, used in applications requiring good mechanical, thermal and chemical properties. It has a lower melting point and slightly higher flexible properties compared to nylon 66. Very few reports have been focused on the structures and properties of long-chain polyamides, which brings some troubles on their processing and applications. For the purpose of understanding mechanical changes within different temperature interval, dynamic structure transition of PA1010 was investigated by wide-angle X-ray diffractometer (WAXD) equipped with a hot stretching stage. During the process of the simultaneous thermal stretched, in addition to the Brill transition phenomenon, it was also accompanied by changes in crystallinity, orientation and tensile force. Both annealing and stretching can promote crystallization, in addition, stretching can also induce and destroy crystallization. With stretch ratios increasing, the crystallinity increases firstly, reaches the maximum when stretch ratio is 2.25 times and then decreases. The degree of orientation increase firstly but increase poorly after 2.50 times. The stretch force increase gradually too. The stretch force has a stronger ability than temperature to induce the PA1010 undergo the Brill transition. The presented results show that Brill transition is completed and the α-crystal structure completely transformed into γ-crystal structure when the stretch ratio is 2.50 times. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

• NC has emerged as a potential candidate for fabricating highly efficient membranes. • The aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive review of NC-based membranes. • The structural design, separation performances and mechanisms are provided. • The review focuses on the state-of-the-art NC membranes for molecular separation. Nanocellulose (NC), a family of most promising natural nanomaterials, has emerged as a potential candidate for the fabrication of highly efficient separation membranes owing to its unique one-dimensional nanostructure, hydrophilic property, easily designed surface chemistry as well as outstanding mechanical strength. In this paper, we review the latest advancements on the state-of-the-art NC-based membranes for molecular separation in water treatment, chemical industries, seawater desalination and battery fields. Based on the function of NC, NC-based membranes are classified as NC-assembled membranes, NC/2D nanomaterial composite membranes, functional NC membranes, thin-film nanocomposite membranes, and thin-film composite membranes with NC as an interlayer. Their preparation methods, physicochemical structures, separation performances and separation mechanisms are summarized to elucidate the role of NC. A summary and perspective are further provided on the opportunities and challenges in this arising field. Multifunctional hydrogels show potential applications in actuators and wearable sensors. However, it is still a challenge to develop a photothermal responsive conductive hydrogel with high transparency, mechanical properties, broad sensing range, and low-temperature resistance. In this work, a transparent, photothermal responsive, and highly stretchable alginate-based hydrogels was feasibly constructed by adding two-dimensional non-layered molybdenum dioxide nanosheets (2D-MoO 2) to sodium alginate/polyacrylamide mixture and then soaking into the calcium chloride solution. The introduction of 2D-MoO 2 renders the hydrogels excellent photothermal properties and controllable photomechanical deformation under near-infrared irradiation, while maintaining high transparency (~60 %).The calcium ions give the hydrogel excellent mechanics, conductivity, and freezing tolerance concurrently. The transparent hydrogel-based sensor shows wide sensing range (0–1800 %) and cycling stability in detecting deformations and real-time human motions even in harsh environments. Therefore, this work provides a new route for generating transparent multifunctional hydrogels towards the applications of remote actuation and strain sensing. The interplay between active matter and environmental complexity can be applied to achieve complex functions ranging from rectification, separation, and capture to sorting of active particles. Here, we experimentally realize chiral separation of disk-shaped active rotors by using the interactions between the rotors and the obstacle array. Differently chiral active particles passing through the obstacle array exhibit opposite lateral drifts. The separation efficiency is excellent provided that the obstacle array is of sufficient length. The spin and longitudinal flow of the rotors and the friction between rotors and obstacles jointly determine the lateral drift of the rotors, thus leading to chiral separation. Furthermore, we propose a simple theoretical model, which captures the essential mechanism underlying the chiral separation and properly reproduces the experimental critical collision angle. This scheme could separate objects with static chiral structures, once an external source can power the objects to spin with different angular velocities. In this work, polyamide 1010 (PA1010) films were prepared by melt-quenching. A wide-angle X-ray diffractometer (WAXD) with a thermal stretching stage was used to investigate the structure transformation, crystallinity and degree of orientation in the course of simultaneous thermally stretched PA1010. The crystallinity increased along with the increase of draw ratio and then decreased as the draw ratio was over 2.00 times—which the maximum value reached when the draw ratio was about 2.00 times. The degree of orientation of γ-PA1010 was much greater at higher temperature than room temperature (RT); the difference gradually became weaker with the increase of draw ratio. There was a linear relationship between the draw ratios and tensile force at higher temperatures, and the tensile force increased with the increase of draw ratios. The tensile force may induce crystallization and promote orientation in the course of simultaneous thermally stretched PA1010. These phenomena are beneficial to understand the structure-processing-performance relationship and provide some theoretical basis for the processing and production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
