Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to suggest a more central role for reflexive artistic practices in a clarified research agenda for second-order cybernetics (SOC). This is offered as a way to assist the field in the further development of its theoretical/methodological "core" and, subsequently, enhance its impact on the world. Design/methodology/approach: The argument begins by reviewing Karl Müller's account of the failure of SOC to emerge as a mainstream endeavor. Then, Müller's account is recontextualized within recent developments in SOC that are traced through the Design Cybernetics movement inspired by Ranulph Glanville. This alternate narrative frames a supposedly moribund period as a phase of continuing refinement of the field's focus upon its "proper object of study," namely, the observer's mentation of/about their mentation. The implications of this renewed focus are then positioned within Larry Richard's vision of the cybernetician, not as "scientist" per se but rather as a "craftsperson in and with time" capable of productively varying the dynamics of their daily interactions. Having centered widespread capacity building for this "craft" as a proposed research agenda for a new phase of SOC, the paper concludes by pointing to the unique and necessary role to be played by the arts in this endeavor. Personal reflections upon the author's own artistic and theoretical activities are included throughout. Findings: The development and application of artistic methods for the enhancement of individual capacity for second-order observation is consistent with the purpose of SOC, namely, "to explain the observer to himself." Therefore, it is in the field's interest to more fulsomely embrace non-scientific, arts-based forms of research. Research limitations/implications: In a truly reflexive/recursive fashion, the very idea that first-person, arts-based narratives are seen, from a mainstream scientific point of view, as an insufficiently rigorous form of research is, itself, a research limitation. This highlights, perhaps ironically, the need for cybernetics to continue to pursue its own independent definitions and standards of research beyond the boundaries of mainstream science rather than limiting its own modes of inquiry in the name of "scientific legitimacy." Practical implications: A general uptake of the view presented here would expand the horizon of what might be considered legitimate, rigorous and valuable research in the field. Social implications: The view presented here implies that many valuable contributions that SOC can make to society take place beyond the constraints of academic publication and within the realm of personal growth and social development. Originality/value: The very clearly defined and "refocused" vision of SOC in this paper can be of substantial utility in developing a more robust, distinctive and concrete research agenda across this field. Privacy-preserving set operations have important practical and theoretical significance and have always been a research focus of secure multiparty computation. Most existing studies focus on single set operations which cannot express many complicated set operations. However, the studies on mixed set operations are highly limited. The available protocols for mixed set operations can only be implemented through a threshold fully homomorphic encryption scheme. Since mixed set operations are necessary in practice, it is necessary to design an efficient and practical secure computation protocol for mixed set operations. In this paper, we propose a new protocol for mixed set operations that is based on a new encoding method and the threshold ElGamal cryptosystem. Through an efficiency analysis, it is proved that the efficiency of the protocol that is proposed in this paper are significantly higher than those of the available protocols. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this article, the authors discuss the User-Centered Design (UCD) process for mobile devices. When designing any product, mobile or not, good UCD practices help to ensure the product works. No feature should be added to the product only because it is easy and cheap to implement, or because one thinks it is a good idea. The most important aspect of the design process is to provide the user with the real usage context. For mobile phones this means users need to be able to touch the buttons and see software that feels like it is actually working. Paper prototypes are good because they can be used for verifying the product requirements without any investments in technology or development. They can also be used in a real context to get a relevant testing environment, but they are not sufficient for solving the usability issues of the final product, especially detailed interaction or performance. The authors are planning to work on practices that speed up the construction of realistic prototypes for mobile phones. This will allow them to test as if they had the final product, but the prototype can be provided earlier and less expensively. In addition, methods and tools for observing and testing in the mobile context need to be developed further. The experience shows that realistic prototypes are even more important for understanding the detailed requirements of mobile software when compared to traditional software.

The article cites that the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking to calm the fray over whether scientific results should be freely available. On Friday, it released a draft policy aimed at improving public access to the results of NIH-funded research. The proposal requires grantees to deposit copies of their papers in NIH's free PubMed Central archive once they're accepted by a journal and calls for posting them on PubMed 6 months after publication. They experience the ordinary world in extraordinary ways and seem to inhabit a mysterious no-man's-land between fantasy and reality. For them the senses--touch, taste, hearing, vision and smell--get mixed up instead of remaining separate. Modern scientists have known about synesthesia since 1880, when Francis Galton, a cousin of Charles Darwin, published a paper in Nature on the phenomenon. About four years ago, in 1999, we and others began to uncover brain processes that could account for synesthesia. Along the way, we also found new clues to some of the most mysterious aspects of the human mind, such as the emergence of abstract thought, metaphor and perhaps even language. A common explanation of synesthesia is that the affected people are simply experiencing childhood memories and associations. This article focuses on the academic plagiarism by young researchers and university professors as they are rewarded on the basis of academic publications they produce annually, as well as on the quality of these publications. The quality standards are often determined by the academic ranking of the conference or journal publishing the firm. In the pressure to publish, to proceed up the ladder, or simply to keep a job, young professors may be tempted to cheat their way up through the system. And many of them are able to hide their crime. Faking research data is one option, especially when confidentiality prevents disclosure. Another alternative, apparently pursued by is plagiarizing the published work of others. Choosing a journal in a related field, rather than one in the same field, would likely reduce the chance of an overlap of readership and of being caught. Besides, if one use a paper that's already moved successfully through a review process may increase the likelihood it would be accepted for publication again in another journal.

Abstract Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) monitoring takes a primary role in many industrial and research processes. Huge amounts of WSN sensor readings are nowadays available and can be analyzed to discover fruitful knowledge. This paper focuses on analyzing historical WSN sensor readings to identify the combinations of sensors whose readings show an unexpected trend. Although significant variations of single sensor readings may be easily detected, discovering correlations between multiple sensor readings is challenging without using advanced data analytics tools. To tackle this issue, we present an itemset-based data mining approach to analyzing WSN data. It identifies the combinations of sensors (of arbitrary size) whose readings are unexpectedly low in a given time period. Since the readings acquired by multiple sensors may decrease in an alternate fashion, the discovered patterns provide new information compared to single sensor analysis. To make the mined patterns manageable by domain experts for manual inspection, the mining algorithm is driven by spatial constraints defined on the WSN topology. In this paper, we show how quantum Boolean circuits can be used to implement the oracle and the inversion-about-average function in Grover's search algorithm. Before illustrating how this can be done, we present the circuit design principle using the satisfiability (SAT) problem as an example. Then, based on this principle, we show the quantum circuits for two different kinds of applications. The first one is searching a phone book. Although this is a typical example of Grover's algorithm, we show that it is impractical as a real-world application. As the second application, we give the quantum circuits for a more practical application—breaking a symmetric cryptosystem. Although these two applications have quite different types of search criteria, they are both one-way functions and the proposed circuits can actually be generalized to any such problems. In this perspective, we conclude this paper by proposing a template of quantum circuits that is capable of searching the solution of a certain class of one-way functions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
