The aim of this Doctoral Thesis is the development of new catalytic synthetic methodologies in the context of the modern organic chemistry setting, with special focus on the use of cheap, sustainable catalytic materials. Specifically, during the course my PhD, I focused my research on two main distinct catalytic strategies, namely: the use of carbonaceous materials as catalysts (carbocatalysis) and nickel catalysis, also investigating a synergistic combination of the two. These methodologies were explored as means for the manipulation of (hetero)aromatic cores, representing ubiquitous, easily accessible and privileged scaffolds in medicinal or natural products chemistry. Both polar and radical reaction manifolds were engaged as complementary reactivities, capitalizing on metal- as well as organo-based activation modes. Particular attention has been devoted to addressing modern synthetic challenges or highly sought- after methodologies. Specifically, protocols for direct substitution of alcohols, dearomatization of arene nuclei, formation of C-S bonds, carbon dioxide fixation, C-C bond activation and fluoroalkylation were successfully achieved under carbo- or nickel catalyzed conditions.

The tandem catalytic functionalization/carboxylation of double as well as triple carbon-carbon bonds with CO2 represent an emerging research area in synthetic organic methodology. In particular, the combination of mild reaction conditions, stoichiometric acceptor/donorless conditions (visible light photoredox catalysis) and chiral catalysts contributed to a rapid development of this intriguing research area capable of creating chemical diversity/ complexity from readily available unsaturated hydrocarbons and CO2 as a C1-buinding block. The most recent developments in the field have been collected in the present review article and organized, based on the different sets of π-systems/intermediates/reactive partners employed (i.e., nickelalactones, organo-halides) as well as synthetic strategies (i.e., visible-light photo redox catalysis).

Hypothesis Thin liquid films are important in many scientific fields. In particular, films with both the surface layers exposed to a different fluid phase, known as freestanding films, are relevant in the ambit of foams and emulsions. Hence, there is a great interest in developing novel techniques allowing to form large and stable freestanding liquid films and to follow their dynamics. Experiments We develop a novel opto-mechanical tool allowing to perform and study the preparation and the capillary leveling flow of axisymmetric bare freestanding liquid films. The tool is composed by a customized motorized iris diaphragm and by an innovative joint imaging setup combining digital holography and white light color interferometry that enables real-time measurement of film thickness over a large field of view. The dynamics of films made of a model Newtonian fluid, i.e., high-viscosity silicone oil, is studied. Direct numerical simulations and a hydrodynamic model based on the lubrication theory are used to support the experimental results. Findings Iris opening induces the formation of large circular freestanding films with a stepped profile. Once iris opening is stopped, the films undergo a capillary leveling flow tending to flatten their profile. The leveling flow follows the theoretical scaling given by Ilton et al. [1]. We prove through numerical simulations that an equi-biaxial extensional flow occurs at the film center. Furthermore, we observe the formation and dynamics of dimples in bare freestanding films for the first time.

Insights into the effect of die swell on extrusion foam of thermoplastic polymers are presented. The die swell or Barus effect is the swelling of a viscoelastic material due to a fast elastic recovery after being subjected to stress. The elastic recovery is proportional to the energy stored in the material during the deformation that is released immediately when the material is free to expand. In extrusion foam, the elastic recovery happens at the die exit together with the foaming process (i.e., bubble nucleation and growth). Previous reports on extrusion have focused on modeling the die swell or foaming individually. We investigated the existence of a link between the die swell and foaming that is fundamental in designing the geometry of a die for extrusion foam. Simple and complex dies were used to measure the expansion ratio of a polyethylene blown with isobutane and CO2. It was found that the expansion ratio is anisotropic, the anisotropy in the expansion of the foam is due to the die swell strongly affecting the final shape of the product, and it cannot be neglected in standard application for extrusion foam. Surprisingly, it was found that the foam density changes at a high level of die swell because it is affected by the elastic recovery of the material.

Può essere considerata la fotografia di Diane Arbus un esempio contemporaneo di tempo comico? La primogenita Doon, precoce e involontaria custode del lavoro e della memoria di Diane Arbus, è giunta ad augurarsi che l’insieme delle curiose, e a volte morbose, informazioni biografiche e aneddotiche sulla madre, potesse paradossalmente rendere alla fine invisibili tutte le parole in modo che, di fronte alle sue fotografie, parlasse “l’eloquenza del loro silenzio”. Può essere comico il silenzio? Sì, certamente. Se appunto la forza eloquente della situazione cui ci si trova dinnanzi va ben oltre tutto ciò che la narrazione potrebbe concorrere a definire e raccontare. Il parlare di tempo comico nella fotografia di Diane Arbus impone di chiarire la distinzione tra un tempo della performance e un tempo della fruizione. Penso che ciò che rende affascinanti e sconvolgenti le immagini di Arbus sia proprio la distanza e l’estraneità che si aprono come un insondabile varco tra il sentimento che ha dato impulso allo scatto e la reazione che si prova di fronte a quello stesso scatto. L’impatto improvviso con le inconfondibili immagini di Diane Arbus può facilmente provocare il sorriso (anche se per alcuni suoi contemporanei fu il disgusto): la signora al ballo con la “maschera da uccello”, i due ragazzini vincitori dei Campionati giovanili interstatali di ballo, l’adolescente in procinto di sfilare con bandiera a stelle e strisce e spilletta “Bomb Hanoi”, i nudisti seduti in salotto, i primi piani di ladies con velette e trucco pesante, ma anche l’uomo-puntaspilli, le gemelle, il nano ebreo coi genitori, gli abitués del museo dei mostri Hubert, la barista con cane souvenir o la donna con la scimmietta travestita da neonato. Così, gli irresistibili ritratti scattati dalla fotografa americana tra la fine degli anni Cinquanta e l’estate del 1971, ci fanno provare la sensazione di assistere alla pazzesca sfilata di un’umanità grottesca e caricaturale. Ma non appena ci si addentri un poco nel suo mondo, nel suo silenzio appunto, nella sua esperienza esistenziale e fotografica, quel sorriso si fa sempre un po’ più amaro e un po’ più doloroso. Forse una fotografia in particolare condensa i doppi livelli di lettura e le affascinanti ambiguità del suo lavoro, e cioè il ritratto del Re e della Regina del Ballo del Circolo degli Anziani newyorchesi del 1970. Dentro all’immagine spoglia, quadrata e in bianco e nero, posano due anziani signori seduti su due sedie a poca distanza l’uno dall’altra. Lo sguardo in macchina è diretto, impettito, assolutamente serio e coinvolto ma non ironico né retorico. Li possiamo anche immaginare esausti dalla festa ma non per questo meno orgogliosi della parte che recitano per l’obiettivo. Il Re e la Regina indossano corone scintillanti e lavorate, scettri con pomelli decorati e mantelli di simil-ermellino che però lasciano candidamente intravedere la finzione, cioè gli abiti di tutti i giorni e i particolari che non appartengono alla favola, come gli occhiali da vista, la borsetta appoggiata a fianco dei piedi, i pacchi regalo appoggiati sulle gambe. Diane si era appassionata ai vincitori di gare, balli, trofei, campionati e vari tipi di ritualità sociale, emblemi di quel “pinnacolo precario dell’orizzonte umano” che sembra essere un’ancora di salvezza al disagio e al nulla. Ecco uno splendido esempio della doppia vita delle sue fotografie: quanto sono buffi e un po’ ridicoli quei due anziani coniugi travestiti per il ballo in maschera, quanto sono tristi. Credo che stia in questo secondo tempo di percezione la grandezza, il fascino e insieme il dramma di Diane Arbus, il passo che separa la fruizione individuale di una sua immagine, singola, slegata e autarchica, dallo sforzo invece di guardarla con gli stessi occhi con cui l’aveva fissata lei, ripetendo la medesima performance fotografica che l’aveva portata a scattare quel ritratto, a immortalare quella decadenza a volte fisica, a volte culturale, a volte s...

Il contributo ripercorre le vicende storiche della fotografia, dall'invenzione fino ai nostri giorni, sotto la particolare categoria del "tempo comico". Il "tempo" come forma plasmante decisiva per tutta contemporaneità e il "comico" come particolare declinazione del tempo stesso allargando il suo significato primario del termine fino a comprendere il grottesco, l'assurdo e in generale l'anomalo e il sorprendente.

Objective: Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) has been gaining momentum as a non-invasive rehabilitation approach to restore movement to paralyzed muscles after spinal cord injury (SCI). However, its low selectivity limits the types of movements that can be enabled and, thus, its potential applications in rehabilitation., Approach: In this cross-over study design, we investigated whether muscle recruitment selectivity of individual muscles could be enhanced by multielectrode configurations of tSCS in 16 neurologically intact individuals. We hypothesized that due to the segmental innervation of lower limb muscles, we could identify muscle-specific optimal stimulation locations that would enable improved recruitment selectivity over conventional tSCS. We elicited leg muscle responses by delivering biphasic pulses of electrical stimulation to the lumbosacral enlargement using conventional and multielectrode tSCS., Results: Analysis of recruitment curve responses confirmed that multielectrode configurations could improve the rostrocaudal and lateral selectivity of tSCS. To investigate whether motor responses elicited by spatially selective tSCS were mediated by posterior root-muscle reflexes, each stimulation event was a paired pulse with a conditioning-test interval of 33.3 ms. Muscle responses to the second stimulation pulse were significantly suppressed, a characteristic of post-activation depression suggesting that spatially selective tSCS recruits proprioceptive fibers that reflexively activate muscle-specific motor neurons in the spinal cord. Moreover, the combination of leg muscle recruitment probability and segmental innervation maps revealed a stereotypical spinal activation map in congruence with each electrode's position., Significance: Improvements in muscle recruitment selectivity could be essential for the effective translation into stimulation protocols that selectively enhance single-joint movements in neurorehabilitation.
