The article presents a memoir of U.S. legal scholar Thomas Reed Powell. The article author states that although Powell founded no school and espoused no doctrinal creed, his teaching and writing were distinctive, unmistakable, and inimitable. His published papers, numbering close to two hundred essays, are marked by that relentless analysis of judicial rhetoric, that irreverent uncloaking of disreputable logic, that playfulness in the service of intellectual morality, which made him a fearsome delight to students and friends. If one were to revert after all to the language of science and identify a phenomenon with his name, it would have to be called the Powell Effect.

The article analyzes the UDC's class 9, based on frequent use of its classification indices, especially 929/94 divisions and their subdivisions, for publications on Biographical sciences and related studies. History and predilection of the main divisions to be used in connection with indices of other classes. An important aspect of the classification methodology within historical field is how distinctly can historical figures and historians be classified. There are also presented the existence of different types of classification, based on a combination of common auxiliary indicating place, time and direct alphabetical specifications. The existence of different types of classification is also highlighted, based on specific topics. For application there can be used common auxiliaries and/or alphabetical extension (Table Ih in UDC) and the author provides different examples of combination(s) for biographies, biographical presentation (092), various other literary forms (82-9), presentation in chronological/historical form (091), historical sources (093). The history of individual countries and peoples is expressed through the use of Table Ie - common auxiliaries of place, Table Ig - common auxiliaries of time, and, where appropriate, Table If - common auxiliaries of ethnic grouping and nationality. Class 94 allows great flexibility for collection organization which should be guided by users needs and established by the local indexing policy. If required, it is also possible to organize history by periods first and then by place - e.g. 94"1914/1918"(4) Europe during First World war or 94"04/14"(5) History of the Middle Ages in Asia. Although the term Hesselbach’s triangle is used in everyday general surgical practice, little is written and known regarding the life of the early surgical pioneer for whom it is named. The article discusses the creation of an intellectual biography of the U.S. sociologist Talcott Parsons. The researcher discusses Parsons' doctoral dissertation dealing with capitalism that was analyzed by sociologist Max Weber, and how Parsons' work delivered sociology from social Darwinism at the turn of the twentieth century. The author supports Parsons' work on the basis that he was a thinker and academician who did not use inconsistent analysis. A biography of Viktor Aleksandrovich Pliss, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, is presented on his 75th birthday. He was born in 1932 in Syktyvkar, Republic Komi, in a family of Leningrad intellectuals and studied at Leningrad State University. He worked at the Department of Differential Equations at Leningrad State University and published several scientific papers. The article mentions his accomplishments and career growth.

The article presents information on Bio Buddies, a project developed by the author to help students demonstrate mastery of language arts concepts after a unit or semester is completed on biography or biographically related activities. Emphasis is placed on biography as a central theme in many different parts of language arts curriculum to connect students with the lives of people from the community, pages of history, and works of fiction. It is said that Bio Buddies is an engaging way for students to show that they have learned about how people's lives are honored through the telling of their stories. Prof. John Papapolymerou must also retire as an Associate Editor, but John is retiring because he has accepted the position of Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE MICROWAVE AND WIRELESS COMPONENTS LETTERS. I have valued his work as an Associate Editor for me for six years, and I wish him success in his new role and service that he will be providing to the IEEE MTT-S. In 2015, she joined the Nuclear Science And Technology Research Institute, as an Assistant Professor. She has been working on fiber lasers and amplifiers, laser fusion, and laser accelerators. The present study deals with the founders of the section of anthropology at the Estonian Naturalists' Society (ENS) and their biographies and scientific bibliographies. Only the chairman of the section of anthropopology Juhan Aul had dr. phil. nat. scientific degree in the branch of anthropology. We may divide all other founders into four groups as follows: the first -- the colleague from the Institute of Zoology at the University of Tartu -- MSc. Harald Haberman, the second -- two students of zoology (stud. rer. nat.) Eerik Kumari and Aina Erna Emmeline Tõnurist, the third -- colleagues from the same building -- the archeologist MSc. Richard Indreko and the student Karl Pärna and the fourth -- Medical Doctor Voldemar Üprus. As our study shows no one of the other founders, only J. The article aims to present Zigmas Angarietis as a politician, concentrates on the factors which formed his personal views and the evolution of his world outlook as well as attempts to estimate his political activities from a historical point of view. This is done on the basis of Z. Angarietis' memoirs and his articles as well as the memoirs of his contemporaries. The author of the article claims that social inequality of that period and Marxist ideas encouraged him to become a professional revolutionary; his exile in 1915-1917 made him become a member of the Russian Bolshevik party. The author also discloses Z. Angarietis' hostility towards Lithuania as an independent state and concentrates on his role as a promoter of the communist ideas in Lithuania in 1919, as a propagator of the Bolshevik ideology, and as a founder of Lithuania's communist party in 1920-1937. A biography of Josef Gerstmann, a neuropsychiatrist, is presented. He was born on July 17, 1887 in Lviv, Ukraine and studied medicine at the University of Vienna. He was trained under Julius Wagner von Jauregg in neurology and psychiatry and became a professor in those subjects. He authored more than 100 papers with important contributions in unilateral tactile agnosia and the malaria treatment of progressive paralysis. He discovered the Gertsmann syndrome.

A biography of German physicist Klaus Arnold is presented. Arnold garnered his academic education at the Department of Physics of the University of Leipzig. He obtained his doctor of philosophy degree in physics in 1969. Arnold co-founded the research program Bio- and Model Membranes at the department. In 1988, Arnold became an elected member of the Saxonian Academy of Science. He is the author/coauthor of more than 250 scientific papers and reviews and has given talks and invited seminars.

Klaas Koen (1852-1883) was the first South African-born missionary of the Berlin Mission Society. From the perspective of the mission authorities, he was the perfect poster boy for their activities in this country. In the dominant thinking of the times, the fact that he was of Khoisan descent should have condemned him to a life of 'wicked foolishness...and all sorts of heathen sins and disgraces." Instead, in the interpretation of the mission, having been reborn in Christ, he worked diligently for the mission and remained faithful even unto death. His life was celebrated in a tract and other texts produced by the Society. Given the fact that the reports sent back to headquarters by missionaries in the field followed a rigid format, it is difficult to recover what Koen himself may have thought about his life and actions. This paper examines Koen's life history and explores why the Mission Society treated him, wrote about him, and remembered him as they did.
