Background Developing eco-friendly antioxidant and antimicrobial substances originating from biomass residues has recently attracted considerable interest. In this study, two lignosulfonates and various oxidized water-soluble lignins were investigated for their antioxidant properties, as assessed by ABTS, DPPH and Folin-Ciocalteu methods, and their antimicrobial activity against some bacterial strains responsible for human pathologies. Results The lignosulfonates showed the largest antiradical/antimicrobial capacity, whereas the other substrates were less effective. The observed antioxidant/antibacterial properties were positively correlated with lignin aromatic/phenolic content. The positive correlation between antiradical and antimicrobial activities suggests that lignin scavenging capacity was also involved in its antibacterial activity. A greater antimicrobial performance was generally observed against Gram-positive bacterial strains, and it was attributed to the intrinsic larger susceptibility of Gram-positive bacteria to lignin phenols. A significant though lesser inhibitory activity was also found against Escherichia coli. Conclusion Our results confirmed the dependence of lignin antioxidant/antibacterial power on its extraction method and chemical structure, as well as on the type of bacterial strains. Identifying the relationship between lignin molecular composition and its antioxidant/antibacterial features represents an advance on the potential future use of renewable and eco-compatible lignin materials in nutraceutical, pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors. © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

Cocoa bean shells were subjected to green extraction technologies, based on the absence of toxic organic solvents, to recover polyphenols; the extract was then encapsulated using a spray dryer and maltodextrin as coating agent. The best conditions observed in the spray drying tests (core-to-coating ratio 1:5; inlet temperature 150 °C; flow rate 6 ml min−1) were applied to produce the microcapsules used to enrich the same cocoa mass as the shells and processed for the preparation of the chocolate bars. Sensory analysis showed no significant differences between enriched chocolate bar and the unenriched reference one, except for the appearance. Both samples were then subjected to accelerated storage tests, at the end of which the polyphenols in the control chocolate bar (0.85 g 100 g−1) were reduced by about 50% (0.42 g 100 g−1), while in the enriched chocolate (1.17 g 100 g−1) by only 22% (0.97 g 100 g−1). The proposed process significantly enriched the chocolate bars with phenolic antioxidants recovered from cocoa waste without increasing the sensations of bitterness and astringency.

Lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs) are monocopper enzymes of industrial and biological importance. In particular, LPMOs play important roles in fungal lifestyle. No inhibitors of LPMOs have yet been reported. In this study, a diverse library of 100 plant extracts was screened for LPMO activity-modulating effects. By employing protein crystallography and LC-MS we successfully identified a natural LPMO inhibitor. Extract screening revealed a significant LPMO inhibition by methanolic extract of Cinnamomum cassia (cinnamon), which inhibited LsAA9A LPMO from Lentinus similis in a concentration-dependent manner. With a notable exception, other microbial LPMOs from families AA9 and AA10 were also inhibited by this cinnamon extract. The polyphenol cinnamtannin B1 was identified as the inhibitory component by crystallography. Cinnamtannin B1 was bound to the surface of LsAA9A at two distinct binding sites, one close to the active site and another at a pocket on the opposite side of the protein. Independent characterization of cinnamon extract by LC-MS and subsequent activity measurements confirmed that the compound inhibiting LsAA9A was cinnamtannin B1. The results of this study show that specific natural LPMO inhibitors of plant origin exist in nature, providing the opportunity for future exploitation of such compounds within various biotechnological contexts. Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7 is a major foodborne pathogen that causes severe human infections. Plant extracts, glycine, and sodium acetate (NaOAc) exert antimicrobial effects that can be used to control pathogenic E. coli. However, their combinations have not been investigated. Thus, this study investigates the combination of ethanolic plant extracts with glycine and NaOAc against E. coli at various pH and temperature levels. Clove and rosemary extracts exhibited significant (p ≤ 0.05) antimicrobial activity against E. coli. At neutral pH, the combination of plant extracts with 1.0% glycine or 0.1% NaOAc reduced the minimum inhibitory concentration of clove from 0.4% to 0.2%, at pH 5.5, clove (0.1%) and rosemary (0.2%) extracts supplemented with NaOAc (0.1%) showed an additive effect. The population of E. coli O157:H7 in phosphate-buffered saline with 0.2% clove extract, 2% glycine, and 2% NaOAc showed a more than 5 log reduction after incubation at 15 °C for 96 h, while the combination of 0.1% clove extract with 2% NaOAc at pH 5.5 completely inhibited E. coli within 24 h at 35 °C. Thus, the combination of plant extracts with glycine and NaOAc could serve as a promising hurdle technology in controlling the growth of E. coli.

Despite technological advances in cancer treatment, especially in radiotherapy, many efforts are being made in improving cancer cell radio-sensitivity to increase therapeutic ratio and overcome cancer cell radio-resistance. In the present review, we evaluated the anticancer mechanism of Annona muricata L. (AM) leaves extract and its bioactive compounds such as annonaceous acetogenins, annomuricin, annonacin, or curcumin; and further correlated them with the potential of the mechanism to increase or to reduce cancer cells radio-sensitivity based on literature investigation. We see that AM has a promising future potential as a radio-sensitizer agent.

Background: Lycium barbarum (also called wolfberry), a famous Chinese traditional medicine and food ingredient, is well recognized for its significant role in preventing obesity; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying its preventive effects on fat accumulation are not well understood yet. The aim of this study was to determine the effects and mechanism of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) on the proliferation and differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. MTT was used to detect the proliferation of 3T3-Ll preadipocytes. Oil red O staining and colorimetric analysis were used to detect cytosolic lipid accumulation during 3T3-L1 preadipocyte differentiation. Real-time fluorescent quantitative PCR (qPCR) technology was used to detect peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ ( PPARγ ), CCAAT/enhancer-binding protein α ( C/EBPα ), adipocyte fatty-acid-binding protein ( aP2 ), fatty acid synthase ( FAS ), and lipoprotein lipase ( LPL ) expression. Results: The concentration of LBP from 25 to 200 μg/mL showed a tendency to inhibit the growth of preadipocytes at 24 h, and it inhibited the differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes in a dose-dependent manner. In the preadipocytes treated with 200 μg/mL LBP, there were reduced lipid droplets in the cytoplasm, and its effect was opposite to that of rosiglitazone (ROS), which significantly reduced the PPARγ , C/EBPα , aP2 , FAS , and LPL mRNA expression of adipocytes. Conclusions: LBP exerts inhibitive effects on the proliferation and differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes and decreases the cytoplasm accumulation of lipid droplets during induced differentiation of preadipocytes toward mature cells. Above phenomenon might link to lowered expression of PPARγ , C/EBPα , aP2 , FAS , and LPL after LBP treatment. Thus, LBP could serve as a potential plant extract to treat human obesity or improve farm animal carcass quality via adjusting lipid metabolism. The present study evaluated the effect of extraction techniques (ultrasound-assisted extraction (U) and shaking water bath extrac-tion (WB)), solvents (etha-nol, acetone and distilled water) and concentration (2.5% and 5%) on total phe-nolic content (TPC), anti-bacterial and antioxidant activities of extracts ob-tained from feijoa leaves, peel and pulp. The antibac-terial activity of feijoa ex-tracts were tested in vitro against 6 pathogens bacteria by the disc diffusion method and the antioxidant activity was evaluated by 2,2 diphe-nyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical assay. The results indicated that leaves and peel extracts exhibited stronger antibac-terial activity than that of pulp. In generally, WB-A5%, WB-W5%, U-A5% and U-W 5% extracted with acetone (A) and water (W) at 5% concentration from feijoa leaves, peel and pulp showed more antibacterial activity against all tested pathogen bacteria. The leaves, peel, and pulp ex-tracts had high antioxidant activity with 85.78-90.82%, 89.86-91.60%, and 81.49-91.31%, respectively. Peel extracts had slightly higher antioxidant activity than leaves and pulp extracts. TPC of leaves, peel, and pulp extracts were in the range of 488.99-554.00, 349.17-517, and 115.64-345.46 mg gallic acid equivalents (GAE)/100 g of extract. The overall findings suggested that different part of feijoa (especially leaves and peel) could be used as a natural antibacterial and an-tioxidant for functional foods.

Pallenis spinosa is a medicinal plant which is used in folk medicine as curative or preventive remedies for various diseases. Individual phenolic compounds from the methanolic extracts of its flowers, leaves and stem were determined by the high performance liquid chromatography method (HPLC) and total phenolic contents (TPC) were evaluated by Folin-Ciocalteu assay. The stability and bioactivity (antioxidant activity, micellar cholesterol solubility, α-amylase, and angiotensin converting enzymes (ACE) inhibitory effects) of these extracts in the gastrointestinal environment was determined before and after their protection in hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) capsules. HPLC analysis revealed the presence of thirteen phenolic compounds with nine flavonoids and four phenolic acids. Except for kaempferol, the twelve other compounds have not been previously detected in the aerial part of the studied plant. Quantification of phenolics by HPLC and Folin Ciocalteu methods revealed that the highest TPC was detected in the flower extracts (104.31 ± 0.80 and 145.73 ± 0.48 mg EGA per g of extract, respectively). Leaf extracts displayed the best antioxidant capacity against the two tested radicals DPPH and ABTS (IC50 = 1.24 ± 0.03 and 0.94 ± 0.02 mg mL-1, respectively), FRAP assay (IC50 = 0.50 ± 0.02 mg mL-1), α-amylase inhibitory (IC50 = 1.25 ± 0.00 mg mL-1) and angiotensin activity with an inhibitory percent of 30.10 ± 0.12%. The best activity shown by stem extracts was against micellar cholesterol solubility (67.57 ± 0.00%). A strong decrease in TPC and their bioactivity was observed after the gastrointestinal digestion (GID) in non encapsulated extracts. These results showed that P. spinosa is a good source of phenolic compounds and GID affects significantly their composition, content and bioactivity.

The aim of this study was to use various plants to increase the functional properties of yoghurt. The ethanol extracts of three different plant (Mentha piperita L., Ocimum basilicum L., and Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) extracts were added to the stirred type yoghurts at different ratios (0.1%, 0.3% and 0.5%). The pH values, colour values, antioxidant activity, microbial and sensory attributes of yoghurt were evaluated on the storage days of 0, 7, 14, 21, and 28. The lowest pH values were found at the beginning (4.29) and at the end (3.95) of the storage period in samples containing 0.5% hibiscus extract. The corrosion response of mild steel in 0.5 M H2SO4 acid solution in the presence of Moringer oliefera (MO) leaf extract was investigated using gravimetric, electrochemical, and DFT techniques. Gravimetric results indicate that MO exhibits a high inhibition value up to 93.0% when the concentration was 1.5 g/L. Inhibition value in general increased with an increase in concentration of the extracts but decreased with prolonged exposure time and temperature. Analysis of polarization curves indicated that MO extract acted as mixed-type inhibitors. The adsorption process of MO on a mild steel surface in the acid solution fitted the Langmuir isotherm. GC/MS analysis of MO extract revealed the presence of more than 29 active constituents including 9,12-Octadecadienoic acid (Z, Z) methyl ester (28.55%); n-Hexadecanoic acid (11.24%); 9,12,15-Octadecatrienoic acid methyl ester (9.31%), Benzeneacetonitrile, 4-hydroxy-(6.32%), 2-Furancarboxaldehyde,5-(hydroxymethyl)-(5.6%), Heptadecane (4.85%). Quantum chemical calculations were applied on some of the identified constituents to assess their adsorbability on the mild steel surface and the result revealed remarkable high interaction energies.

In this study, Co0.5Ni0.5Nd0.02Fe1.98O4 nanoparticles CoNiNd (NPs) were synthesized by combustion method linked with biosynthesis with and without different plant extracts such as Lavender, Ginger, Flax-Seed, Lemon Juice, Tragacanth Gum, and Dates Fruit. Co0.5Ni0.5Nd0.02Fe1.98O4 nanoparticles (NPs) with plant extracts (CoNiNd plant extracts) were analyzed by XRD, TEM and SEM methods. The structure of Co-Ni spinel ferrite was confirmed by XRD and the shape and the size of nanoparticles were examined via SEM and TEM and the size was found between 17 and 25 nm. The anti-cancer activity of NPs on cancer cells such as human colorectal carcinoma (HCT-116) and human cervical cells (Hela) were investigated. The cytotoxicity of was examined by MTT assay and followed by measuring the inhibitory concentration (IC50) values after 48h treatments. The cell viability assay confirmed a decrease in the cancer cell viability post NPs treatments and showed dose-dependent inhibitory action. The treatments of CoNiNd (NPs) and CoNiNd plant extracts via Lavender plant extract showed most profound inhibitory action on both cancer cells than extracts other plant extracts. The IC50 values were for HCT-116 cells were found to be in range of 15.75-42.55 µg/mL and 13.44 to 35.65 µg/mL for HeLa cells. In contrast, the treatment of CoNiNd (NPs) and CoNiNd plant extracts showed inhibitory action but the percentage of inhibition was higher in HEK-293 cells. Our results showed that CoNiNd (NPs) and CoNiNd plant extracts possess potential application in the colon and cervical cancer treatments and we recommend molecular analysis of NPs mediated cancer cell death for future applications.

Background Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease caused by the formation of amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE), a serine hydrolase, is the crucial enzyme in the hydrolysis of one of the most extensively known neurotransmitters acetylcholine (ACh) that has been associated with the pathophysiology of AD. From this perspective, enzymatic inhibition of AChE activity has been an auspicious treatment strategy for AD. Different natural products extracted from various plant sources have begun to gain popularity worldwide as a potential inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase (AChEi), and thus, could be used as a therapeutic option for AD treatment. Purpose The present study congregates and discusses the hitherto scattered data of medicinal plants used for the treatment of AD worldwide. The already existing drugs of AD have been discussed. This study aims to highlight species with assessed efficacy, usable tissues, model organisms, and extraction information, to point out species of interest for further study. A critical assessment and examination of plants were done for the potential pharmacological evaluations. Materials and methods This review surveys all the published literature (research and review articles) between 2000 and 2021 using numerous search engines and publication houses viz. Web of Science, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Springer, Google scholar, Taylor and Francis imprints, Chemspider, Wiley and NCBI (National Centre for Biotechnology Information). The literature search was conducted using the following keywords in different combinations: acetylcholinesterase inhibitors, plant extract and Alzheimer disease. More than 300 studies were recovered from which 107 were considered final summarization. Latin names of the identified plant species were validated at The Plant List (2013); version 1.1.; http://www.theplantlist.org/ (accessed 15th August 2018). Results A bulk amount of research has revealed a comprehensive inventory of plant-based acetylcholinesterase inhibitors to date. Due to the lack of promising, effective, and safe inhibitors, this broad array of phytochemicals has captured the focus of research on the inhibition-based treatment of AD. From the literature search, sixteen plant species were found to have high potency with IC50 values ranging from 0.08 µg/mL to 18.9 µg/mL. Conclusion This review broadly discusses the existing approved drugs against AD along with natural products extracted from several plant sources with potential AChEi potential. Species with higher AChEi potency could be evaluated further for pharmacological application.

Comparison of bio CeO2-Nps prepared using Trianthema Portulastrum leaf extract with chemical CeO2-Nps is of interest. The ultraviolet - visible, x-ray diffraction, HR - TEM, FT - IR, and photoluminescence studies were conducted with CeO2-Nps. UV–Maximum absorptionat 292 nm was completed using UV-visible spectrum. The HR–TEM images showed 38 nm bio CeO2-Nps with spherical morphology. This showed the polycrystalline character of CeO2-Nps similar to XRD data. The presence of metal oxide is confirmed by FT - IR analyses. The CeO2-Nps showed the potential photocatalytic activity for Acid black 1 color degradation after exposure to sunlight. Chem and bio CeO2-Nps have a degradation rate of 86.66 and 94.33%, respectively for acid black 1 dye. The synthesized CeO2-Nps are also evaluated for antibacterial and antioxidant activity. The bio CeO2-Nps has antibacterial activity for Pseudomonas aeruginosa (17 ± 0.56 mm) and Staphylococcus aureus (16 ± 0.24 mm) at low concentrations of 100 μl. The CeO2-Nps bio showed high inhibition of radical DPPH IC50 μg/ml, at 95.17 ± 21. Thus, we show that CeO2-Nps have environmentally friendly properties that are useful for dye degradation with antimicrobial and antioxidant activities.

This study aimed to identify major phytochemical constituents, as well as compare the immunomodulatory effects of Psidium guajava L. and Phyllanthus amarus Schun and Thonn crude ethanol extracts and their fractions on striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) head kidney leukocytes (HKLs). Moreover, pure constituents were also investigated for their effects on those cells: hypophyllanthin, identified as a major constituent of P. amarus crude extracts and its hexane fraction; corosolic acid, ursolic acid, and oleanolic acid, identified in P. guajava crude extract, ethyl acetate and dichloromethane fractions; with other terpenic derivatives, as well as guajaverin and avicularin, identified with other flavonoids by LC-UV-MS in the crude P. guajava extract and its ethyl acetate fraction. Cell viability, respiratory burst assay (RBA), nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and lysozyme activity in HKLs were analyzed after 24 h stimulation with each extract (10, 20 and 40 μg/mL) or pure compound (7.5, 15 and 30 μM). Our results show that the hexane fraction of both plant extracts inhibited the viability of HKLs, while several other fractions enhanced the cell viability. All P. guajava fractions at all or some concentration considerably enhanced the RBA production in HKLs. Similarly, NOS production was also significantly increased by some or all concentrations of P. guajava dichloromethane and ethyl acetate fractions. However, the NOS production was dose-dependently inhibited in HKLs treated with Pa ethyl acetate and both plants aqueous fractions at 10 or 10 and 40 μg/mL respectively. The lysozyme activity in cells treated with P. guajava crude extracts and all its organic solvent fractions were stronger than those in P. amarus treatments. Pure compounds including corosolic acid, guajaverin, ursolic acid, hypophyllanthin inhibited the HKLs viability according to concentration and type of compound. All pure compounds except avicularin significantly stimulated, at certain or all concentrations, the RBA production and/or the lysozyme activity in HKLs. The NOS production was significantly reduced in HKLs treated with oleanolic acid (30 μM) and hypophyllanthin (7.5 μM) while its level was increased by hypophyllanthin at 30 μM. These results highlighted that the crude ethanol extracts of P. guajava and P. amarus, their fractions and some of their pure components at certain concentrations can potentially act as immunomodulators, and could be considered as valuable candidates in fishery sciences.

Trypanosoma cruzi is the agent of Chagas disease, an infection that affects around 8 million people worldwide. The search for new anti-T. cruzi drugs are relevant, mainly because the treatment of this disease is limited to two drugs. The objective of this study was to investigate the trypanocidal and cytotoxic activity and elucidate the chemical profile of extracts from the roots of the Lonchocarpus cultratus. Roots from L. cultratus were submitted to successive extractions with hexane, dichloromethane, and methanol, resulting in LCH, LCD, and LCM extracts, respectively. Characterization of extracts was done using 1H-RMN, 13C-RMN, CC and TLC. Treatment of T. cruzi forms (epimastigotes, trypomastigotes, and amastigotes) with crescent concentrations of LCH, LCD, and LCM was done for 72, 48, and 48 h, respectively. After this, the percentage of inhibition and IC50/LC50 were calculated. Benznidazole was used as a positive control. Murine macrophages were treated with different concentrations of both extracts for 48 h, and after, the cellular viability was determined by the MTT method and CC50 was calculated. The chalcones derricin and lonchocarpine were identified in the hexane extract, and for the first time in the genus Lonchocarpus, the presence of a dihydrolonchocarpine derivative was observed. Other chalcones such as isocordoin and erioschalcone B were detected in the dichloromethane extract. The dichloromethane extract showed higher activity against all tested forms of T. cruzi than the other two extracts, with IC50 values of 10.98, 2.42, and 0.83 µg/mL, respectively; these values are very close to those of benznidazole. Although the dichloromethane extract presented a cytotoxic effect against mammalian cells, it showed selectivity against amastigotes. The methanolic extract showed the lowest anti-T. cruzi activity but was non-toxic to peritoneal murine macrophages. Thus, the genus Lonchocarpus had demonstrated in the past action against epimastigotes forms of T. cruzi but is the first time that the activity against infective forms is showed, which leading to further studies with in vivo tests.

The study was conducted to investigate the antibacterial effect ofAndrographis paniculataagainst selected human pathogens using microbiological techniques. Different solvents were used to extract the active components from the leaves. The antibacterial activity was studied against selected human pathogens viz,Escherichia coli,Salmonellasp,Bacillussp andEnterococccussp. ForE. coli, the range of minimum inhibition zone at 2.5 mg/ml, 5.0 mg/ml, 7.5 mg/ml and 10.0 mg/ml ethanol extract was 15 mm-25 mm while that of aqueous extract was 13 mm-17 mm with a non-detectable zone at 2.5 mg/ml concentration.Salmonellasp had inhibition zone range of 13 mm-22 mm for ethanol extract while the same organism showed minimum inhibitory zone range of 11 mm-21 mm for aqueous extract. The inhibition zone range of ethanol extract againstBacillussp was 16.5 mm- 25.5 mm while aqueous extract had 9.5 mm-19 mm. Finally forEnterococcussp, the inhibition zone range of ethanol extract was 15 mm-25.5 mm while aqueous extract had 9 mm-25 mm. Among the two solvents, ethanol extract showed greater antibacterial activity against the test organisms when compared with the aqueous extract at 10.0 mg/ml concentration of the extracts. Preliminary screening of phytochemicals in the leaf extract ofAndrographis paniculatarevealed the presence of alkaloids (6.266±0.376 mg/100g), saponins (11.055±0.134 mg/100g), flavonoids (1.175±0.067 mg/100g), tannins (2.230±0.099 mg/100g) and cyannogenic glycosides (0.870±0.057 mg/100g). The results revealed that 10.0mg/ml concentration had effect on all the test bacteria.

Background: Natural phenolic compounds in medicinal herbs and dietary plants are antioxidants which play therapeutic or preventive roles in different pathological situations, such as oxidative stress and inflammation. One of the most studied phenolic compounds in the last decade is chlorogenic acid (CGA), which is a potent antioxidant found in certain foods and drinks. Objective: This review focuses on the anti-inflammatory and antinociceptive bioactivities of CGA, and the putative mechanisms of action are described. Ethnopharmacological reports related to these bioactivities are also reviewed. Materials and Methods: An electronic literature search was conducted by authors up to October 2019. Original articles were selected. Results: CGA has been shown to reduce inflammation and modulate inflammatory and neuropathic pain in animal models. Conclusion: The consensus of the literature search was that systemic CGA may facilitate pain management via bolstering antioxidant defenses against inflammatory insults.

The aim of the presented work was to investigate the potential of aqueous extract of cultivated strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) leaves for stabilization of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs-E) synthesized at room (RT) and boiling temperature (BT). The synthesis and stability of AgNPs-E were monitored by UV-Vis spectroscopy confirming high stability of the AgNPs-E in the dark at room temperature. The Fourier-transform infrared spectra suggest that molecules containing oxygen and nitrogen functional groups (NH, (NH)C=O, CNO, C-O-C and OH) participate in the reduction and stabilization of formed nanoparticles. As determined by the DPPH test, AgNPs-E synthesized at RT exerted higher antioxidant activity as compared to AgNPs-E synthesized at BT (EC50 values of 0.025 and 0.039 mg cm-3, respectively). Also, the AgNPs-E synthesized at RT exerted higher antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus luteus. Examination of the AgNPs-E on HeLa and MDCK cell lines showed concentration-dependent and cell line specific effects on the cell viability as evaluated by the MTT test. The obtained results indicate that synthesized AgNPs-E can be used as a base material in production of pharmaceutical preparations for potential skin applications.

To date, just over a hundred phenanthrenoid dimers have been isolated. Of these, forty-two are completely phenanthrenic in nature. They are isolated from fourteen genera of different plants belonging to only five families, of which Orchidaceae is the most abundant source. Other nine completely acetylated and five methylated dimers were also defined, which were effective in establishing the position of the free hydroxyls of the corresponding natural products, from which they were obtained by semi-synthesis. Structurally, they could be useful chemotaxonomic markers considering that some substituents are typical of a single-family, such as the vinyl group for Juncaceae. From a biogenetic point of view, it is thought that these compounds derive from the radical coupling of the corresponding phenanthrenes or by dehydrogenation of the dihydrophenanthrenoid analogs. Phenanthrenes or dihydroderivatives possess different biological activities, e.g., antiproliferative, antimicrobial, antiinflammatory, antioxidant, spasmolytic, anxiolytic, and antialgal effects. The aim of this review is to summarize the occurrence of phenanthrene dimers in the different natural sources and give a comprehensive overview of their structural characteristics and biological activities.

Plant extracts were produced from Camellia sinesis (Green Tea) and Punica granatum (pomegranate), and the total concentration of polyphenols was measured in terms of equivalent concentration of Gallic acid by using the Folin-Ciocalteu method. Zero Valent Iron nanoparticles (nZVIs) were synthesized in a semi-batch reactor by mixing a pre-specified volume of plant extract or Gallic Acid solution with an aqueous solution of iron sulfate heptahydrate (FeSO4·7H2O). To monitor the kinetics of nZVI synthesis, the transient responses of solution pH and redox potential (Eh) were recorded with two probes adequately connected with a data acquisition card. The nanoparticles were characterized by a variety of techniques: Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), ζ-potential, Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). A kinetic parametric model, based on two parallel single electron transfer (SET) and hydrogen atom transfer (HAT) reactions, was suggested to quantify the dynamics of ferrous ions reduction to zero valence, and its parameters were estimated for each experimental system by matching the transient response of pH. The temporal changes of redox potential during nZVI synthesis were indicative of the reaction progress and agreed with the numerical predictions in semi-quantitative basis. The numerical model enabled us to track the temporal variation of the concentration of iron and polyphenol species, and calculate the yield of ZVI synthesis. The reactivity of nZVIs was assessed by measuring their capacity to reduce hexavalent chromium Cr (VI) in aqueous solutions prepared from potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7).

Graphical abstract, Juniperus spp. are used as medicinal plants in many countries like Bosnia, Lebanon, and Turkey. In folk medicines, these plants have been used for treating skin and respiratory tract diseases, urinary problems, rheumatism and gall bladder stones. The objectives of this work were to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using a coniferous tree, Juniperus procera leaf extract and testing the synthesized AgNPs for its antimicrobial potentials, hemolytic activity, toxicity and the proliferative effects against normal and activated rat splenic cells. Leaf extract was prepared using acetone and ethanol as solvents. AgNPs were prepared using the acetone extract. AgNPs were validated using UV–Vis spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Functional groups in the extract were identified using Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy. SEM images of AgNPs showed spherical and cubic shapes with a uniform size distribution with an average size of 30–90 nm. FT-IR spectroscopy showed the presence of many functional groups in the plant extract. AgNPs showed promising antimicrobial activity against tested bacteria and fungus. AgNPs also expressed a stimulating activity towards the rat splenic cells in a dose dependent manner. Acetone as solvent was safer on cells than ethanol. Green synthesized AgNPs using J. procera might be used as a broad-spectrum therapeutic agent against microorganisms and as an immunostimulant agent.

This study aimed to protect phenolic compounds of Cyclocarya paliurus (Batal.) Iljinskaja (C. paliurus) using a microencapsulation technique. Ethanol and aqueous extracts were prepared from C. paliurus leaves and microencapsulated via microfluidic-jet spray drying using three types of wall material: (1) maltodextrin (MD; 10–13, DE) alone; (2) MD:gum acacia (GA) of 1:1 ratio; (3) MD:GA of 1:3 ratio. The powders’ physicochemical properties, microstructure, and phenolic profiles were investigated, emphasizing the retentions of the total and individual phenolic compounds and their antioxidant capacities (AOC) after spray drying. Results showed that all powders had good physical properties, including high solubilities (88.81 to 99.12%), low moisture contents (4.09 to 6.64%) and low water activities (0.11 to 0.19). The extract type used for encapsulation was significantly (p < 0.05) influenced the powder color, and more importantly the retention of total phenolic compounds (TPC) and AOC. Overall, the ethanol extract powders showed higher TPC and AOC values (50.93–63.94 mg gallic acid equivalents/g and 444.63–513.49 µM TE/g, respectively), while powders derived from the aqueous extract exhibited superior solubility, attractive color, and good retention of individual phenolic compounds after spray drying. The high-quality powders obtained in the current study will bring opportunities for use in functional food products with potential health benefits.

The widespread use of chemical control agents and pesticides for plant-pathogen control has caused many human health and environmental issues. Plant extracts and biocontrol agents have robust antimicrobial activity against different plant pathogens. However, their antiviral activities are still being investigated. In the present study, the methanol extract of Paronychia argentea was characterized and evaluated for its protective activity against the tobacco mosaic virus (TMV) infection in tomato plants under greenhouse conditions at 21 days post-inoculation. The results showed that the foliar application of P. argentea extract (10 µg/mL) enhanced tomato plant growth, resulting in significant increases in shoot and root parameters and total chlorophyll contents. Moreover, a significant reduction in TMV accumulation level in P. argentea-treated plants of 77.88% compared to non-treated plants was reported. Furthermore, induction of systemic resistance with significant elevation in production of antioxidant enzymes (PPO, CAT, and SOD) and transcriptional levels of the pathogenesis-related proteins (PR-1 and PR-7) and polyphenolic genes (CHS and HQT) were also observed. Out of 16 detected compounds, HPLC analysis revealed that the most abundant polyphenolic compounds found in P. argentea extract were gallic acid (5.36 µg/mL), kaempferol (7.39 µg/mL), quercetin (7.44 µg/mL), ellagic acid (7.89 µg/mL), myricetin (8.36 µg/mL), and ferulic acid (8.69 µg/mL). The findings suggest that the use of P. argentea extract as an effective and safe source for the production of bioactive compounds may offer a solution for a promising approach for the management of plant viral infections. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of the protective activity of P. argentea extract against plant viral diseases.

Oxidized LDL (oxLDL) plays a pivotal role on atherosclerosis development, mainly in the formation of lipid-laden macrophage "foam cells". As a consequence, substances that can modulate LDL oxidation have a pharmacological and therapeutic relevance. Based in previous findings showing the ability of Syzigium cumini leaf extract (ScExt) in preventing LDL oxidation in vitro, this study was aimed to assess the effects of ScExt on oxLDL-mediated toxicity in murine J774 macrophages-like cells. For biochemical analyses, LDL isolated from fresh human plasma and oxidized with CuSO4 was incubated with ScExt pre-treated macrophages. Our results demonstrated that ScExt was efficient in preventing the overproduction of reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (ROS/RNS), the loss of macrophage's viability and the foam cells formation induced by oxLDL. These protective effects of ScExt make it a promising antioxidant for future trials toward atherogenesis.

Over the centuries, humans have traditionally used garlic (Allium sativum L.) as a food ingredient (spice) and remedy for many diseases. To confirm this, many extensive studies recognized the therapeutic effects of garlic bulbs. More recently, black garlic (BG), made by heat-ageing white garlic bulbs, has increased its popularity in cuisine and traditional medicine around the world, but there is still limited information on its composition and potential beneficial effects. In this study, the metabolite profile of methanol extract of BG (BGE) was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry in high-resolution mode. Results allowed to establish that BGE major components were sulfur derivatives, saccharides, peptides, organic acids, a phenylpropanoid derivative, saponins, and compounds typical of glycerophospholipid metabolism. Characterization of the BGE action in cancer cells revealed that antioxidant, metabolic, and hepatoprotective effects occur upon treatment as well as induction of maturation of acute myeloid leukemia cells. These results are interesting from the impact point of view of BG consumption as a functional food for potential prevention of metabolic and tumor diseases.

Rhanterium epapposum, native to the Arabian Peninsula, is traditionally used to cure skin infections. The objective is to screen the phytochemical content and antimicrobial activity of aqueous, methanol and 80% methanol extracts of aerial parts of R. epapposum. The phytochemical screening of aqueous, methanolic, and 80% methanol extracts of R. epapposum was conducted using gas chromatographymass spectrometry. The antimicrobial activities of the extracts were assessed by well diffusion and microdilution methods. Qualitative phytochemical analysis revealed the presence of 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol in all three extracts, whereas ethanol, 2-methoxy-, acetate, n-hexadecanoic acid, and 2,3-butanediol are present in higher amount exclusively in the methanol, 80% methanol and aqueous extracts of the aerial parts of R. epapposum, respectively. The highest antibacterial activity was shown by the aqueous extract S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, E. cloacae, and K. pneumoniae, methanolic extract against S. aureus, methicillin-resistant S. aureus, and E. coli, and 80% methanol extract against S. epidermidis, and S. paucimobilis. Interestingly, 80% methanol extracts showed the highest antifungal activity against C. albicans, C. guillermondii, C. vaginalis, C. utilis, and C. tropicalis. The aerial parts of R. epapposum showed broad-spread antimicrobial activity against bacteria and fungi. Especially, the 80% methanol extract showed potent antifungal activity against all the tested fungal strains.

This study was conducted to examine the effects of a plant extract mixture, a microencapsulated product composed of eugenol and garlic tincture (PE), on intestinal health in broilers under necrotic enteritis (NE) challenge. A total of 960 d-old mixed-sex Cobb 500 chicks were randomly distributed to 48-floor pens housing 20 birds per pen. Six treatments were applied: UC, unchallenged control, CC, challenged control, PE, challenged group plus PE, AM, challenged group plus antimicrobial (AM), FAP, challenged group plus a full dose of AM with PE, HAP, challenged group plus a half dose of AM with PE in starter, grower and finisher phases. Birds in the challenged groups were inoculated with Eimeria spp. on d 9 and Clostridiumperfringens on d 14. On d 16, the CC group had increased serum fluorescein isothiocyanate dextran (FITC-d), reduced villus surface area, goblet cell number, upregulated CLDN1, JAM2 genes and reduced microbial diversity compared to the UC group (p &lt, 0.05). Birds fed PE had reduced FITC-d, increased goblet cell number and Bifidobacterium compared to the CC group (p &lt, 0.05). Birds fed PE had reduced CLDN5 expression in male birds, and Bacteroides spp. in female birds than CC group (p &lt, 0.05). These findings suggest that PE supplementation mitigates the effect of NE by improving the intestinal health of birds.

The Cr2O3/ZnO composite catalysts with varying the amount of chromium precursors abbreviated as 0.02CrZn, 0.04CrZn, 0.06CrZn, 0.08CrZn, 0.1CrZn, and fixed the amount of Zn precursor (0.1 M) were prepared by using water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) extract as a template/capping agent. The prepared catalysts were characterized and the catalytic performances of the catalysts were also checked for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye. The photocatalytic MB dye degradation by 0.08CrZn catalyst was achieved and 85% of MB dye was degraded within 90 min irradiation time. However, 0.1CrZ, 0.06CrZ, 0.04CrZ, 0.02CrZ, ZnO, and Cr2O3 catalysts degrade only 80, 74, 79, 76, 52, and 74% of MB dye, respectively. The catalytic performances indicated that the addition of optimum amount of chromium precursor in the preparation of Cr2O3/ZnO composite catalysts with the aid of Eichhornia crassipes plant extract enhances the catalytic activities. This performance enhancement could be as a result of reducing the electron/hole pair separation and the porosity resulted from the plant extract in the catalyst system., Eichhornia Crassipes, Plant extract, ZnO, Cr2O3, MB dye, Visible light.

The study aimed at evaluating the antioxidant profile of a medicinal epiphyte Viscum album L. harvested from three tree species, namely, Populus ciliata L, Ulmus villosa L., and Juglans regia L. The crude extracts were obtained with ethanol, methanol, and water and were evaluated for the total phenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and antioxidant activities using total reducing power (TRP), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 1, 1-diphenyl 1-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH), superoxide radical scavenging (SOR), and hydroxyl radical scavenging (•OH) assays. Our results showed that crude leaf extracts of plants harvested from the host Juglans regia L. exhibited higher yields of phytochemical constituents and noticeable antioxidative properties. The ethanolic leaf samples reported the highest phenols (13.46 ± 0.87 mg/g), flavonoids (2.38 ± 0.04 mg/g), FRAP (500.63 ± 12.58 μM Fe II/g DW), and DPPH (87.26% ± 0.30 mg/mL). Moreover, the highest values for TRP (4.24 ± 0.26 μg/mL), SOR (89.79% ± 0.73 mg/mL), and OH (67.16% ± 1.15 mg/mL) were obtained from aqueous leaf extracts. Further, Pearson correlation was used for quantifying the relationship between TPC, TFC, and antioxidant (FRAP, DPPH, SOR, OH) activities in Viscum album L. compared to their hosts. It was revealed that the epiphyte showed variation with the type of host plant and extracting solvent.

Molineria capitulata is an ornamental plant that has traditionally been used to treat several chronic diseases. The present study was designed to examine the antioxidant, cytotoxic, thrombolytic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic activities of a methanolic extract of M. capitulata leaves (MEMC) using both experimental and computational models. Previously established protocols were used to perform qualitative and quantitative phytochemical screening in MEMC. A computational study, including molecular docking and ADME/T analyses, was performed. The quantitative phytochemical analysis revealed the total phenolic and flavonoid contents as 148.67 and 24 mg/g, respectively. Antioxidant activity was assessed by examining the reducing power of MEMC, resulting in absorbance of 1.87 at 400 µg/mL, demonstrating a strong reduction capacity. The extract exhibited significant protection against blood clotting and showed the highest protein denaturation inhibition at 500 µg/mL. In both the acetic acid-induced writhing and formalin-induced paw-licking models, MEMC resulted in significant potential pain inhibition in mice. In the computational analysis, 4-hydroxybenzaldehyde, orcinol glucoside, curcapital, crassifogenin C, and 2,6-dimethoxy-benzoic acid displayed a strong predictive binding affinity against the respective receptors. These findings indicated that M. capitulata possesses significant pharmacological activities to an extent supported by computational studies.

The conventional physical and chemical synthetic methods for the preparation of metal nanoparticles have disadvantages as they use expensive equipment and hazardous chemicals which limit their applications for biomedical purposes, and are not environment friendly. However, for the synthesis of biocompatible nanomaterials, plant-based techniques are eco-friendly and easy to handle. Herein a simple, single-step biosynthesis of gold nanoparticles using aqueous extracts of Nigella sativa (NSE) and Zingiber officinale (GE) as a reducing and capping agent has been demonstrated. The formation of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, UV-Vis, and EDS spectroscopies. Spectroscopic and chromatographic analysis of GE and NSE revealed the presence of bioactive phytochemical constituents, such as gingerol, thymoquinone, etc., which successfully conjugated the surface of resulting Au NPs. TEM analysis indicated the formation of smaller-sized, less-aggregated, spherical-shaped Au NPs both in the case of GE (~9 nm) and NSE (~11 nm). To study the effect of the concentration of the extracts on the quality of resulting NPs and their anticancer properties, three different samples of Au NPs were prepared from each extract by varying the concentration of extracts while keeping the amount of precursor constant. In both cases, high-quality, spherical-shaped NPs were obtained, only at a high concentration of the extract, whereas at lower concentrations, larger-sized, irregular-shaped NPs were formed. Furthermore, the as-prepared Au NPs were evaluated for the anticancer properties against two different cell lines including MDA-MB-231 (breast cancer) and HCT 116 (colorectal cancer) cell lines. GE-conjugated Au NPs obtained by using a high concentration of the extract demonstrated superior anticancer properties when compared to NSE-conjugated counterparts.

Lupin seeds can represent a valuable source of phenolics and other antioxidant compounds. In this work, a comprehensive analysis of the phytochemical profile was performed on seeds from three Lupinus species, including one cultivar (Lupinus albus) and two wild accessions (Lupinus cossentinii and Lupinus luteus), collected from the northern region of Tunisia. Untargeted metabolomic profiling allowed to identify 249 compounds, with a great abundance of phenolics and alkaloids. In this regard, the species L. cossentinii showed the highest phenolic content, being 6.54 mg/g DW, followed by L. luteus (1.60 mg/g DW) and L. albus (1.14 mg/g DW). The in vitro antioxidant capacity measured by the ABTS assay on seed extracts ranged from 4.67 to 17.58 mg trolox equivalents (TE)/g, recording the highest values for L. albus and the lowest for L. luteus. The DPPH radical scavenging activity ranged from 0.39 to 3.50 mg TE/g. FRAP values varied between 4.11 and 5.75 mg TE/g. CUPRAC values for lupin seeds ranged from 7.20 to 8.95 mg TE/g, recording the highest for L. cossentinii. The results of phosphomolybdenum assay and metal chelation showed similarity between the three species of Lupinus. The acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition activity was detected in each methanolic extract analyzed with similar results. Regarding the butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) enzyme, it was weakly inhibited by the Lupinus extracts, in particular, the highest activity values were recorded for L. albus (1.74 mg GALAE/g). Overall, our results showed that L. cossentinii was the most abundant source of polyphenols, consisting mainly in tyrosol equivalents (5.82 mg/g DW). Finally, significant correlations were outlined between the phenolic compounds and the in vitro biological activity measured, particularly when considering flavones, phenolic acids and lower-molecular-weight phenolics.

Spermacoce verticillata (L.) G. Mey. is commonly used in the folk medicine by various cultures to manage common diseases. Herein, the chemical and biological profiles of S. verticillata were studied in order to provide a comprehensive characterization of bioactive compounds and also to highlight the therapeutic properties. The in vitro antioxidant activity using free-radical scavenging, phosphomolybdenum, ferrous-ion chelating and reducing power assays, and the inhibitory activity against key enzymes such as acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), tyrosinase, α-amylase and α-glucosidase of S. verticillata extracts (dichloromethane, ethyl acetate, methanol and water) were investigated. The highest total phenolic and flavonoid content were observed in the methanolic and aqueous extracts. Exhaustive 2DNMR investigation has revealed the presence of rutin, ursolic and oleanoic acids. The methanolic extract, followed by aqueous extract have showed remarkable free radical quenching and reducing ability, while the dichloromethane extract was the best source of metal chelators. The tested extracts showed notable inhibitory activity against cholinesterases (AChE: 1.63-4.99 mg GALAE/g extract and BChE: 12.40-15.48 mg GALAE/g extract) and tyrosinase (60.85-159.64 mg KAE/g extract). No inhibitory activity was displayed by ethyl acetate and aqueous extracts against BChE and tyrosinase, respectively. All the tested extracts showed modest α-amylase inhibitory activity, while only the ethyl acetate and aqueous extracts were potent against α-glycosidase. This study further validates the use of S. verticillata in the traditional medicine, while advocating for further investigation for phytomedicine development.

Dietary supplements based on Teucrium chamaedrys L. subsp. chamaedrys aerial parts were banned, due to the hepatotoxicity of furan-containing neo-clerodane constituents. Indeed, the plant leaf content in phenolic compounds could be further exploited for their antioxidant capability. Accordingly, bio-guided fractionation strategies have been applied, obtaining seven partially purified extracts. These latter were chemically investigated through 1D and 2D NMR techniques and tested for their antiradical, reducing and cytotoxic capability. Data acquired highlighted that, through a simple phytochemical approach, a progressive neo-clerodane depletion occurred, while maximizing phenylethanoid glycosides in alcoholic fractions. Thus, although the plant cannot be used as a botanical remedy as such, it is suggested as a source of healthy compounds, pure or in mixture, to be handled in pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and/or cosmeceutical sectors.

The effects of combining a polyamide-alginate casing incorporated with nisin (100 ppm and 200 ppm) and ε-polylysine (500 ppm and 1000 ppm) nanoparticles and a mixed plant extract as ingredient in sausage formulation (500 ppm, composed of olive leaves (OLE), green tea (GTE) and stinging nettle extracts (SNE) in equal rates) were studied to improve the shelf life and safety of frankfurter-type sausage. The film characteristics and microbiological properties of sausage samples were evaluated. Sausage samples were packaged in polyethylene bags (vacuum condition) and analysed during 45 days of storage at 4 °C. Control sausages were also treated with 120 ppm sodium nitrite. Polyamide-alginate films containing 100 ppm nisin and 500 ε-PL nanoparticles had the highest ultimate tensile strength compared to other films. However, 100 ppm nisin and 500 ε-PL nanoparticles decreased water vapour permeability of films. The results also revealed that nisin nanoparticles had significantly (p &lt, 0.05) low inhibitory effects against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, molds and yeasts and total viable counts compared to control and ε-PL nanoparticles. Furthermore, 1000 ppm ε-PL nanoparticles displayed the highest antimicrobial activity. Based on the obtained results, the films containing ε-PL nanoparticle could be considered as a promising packaging for frankfurter-type sausages.

Pomelo peel extract (PPE) was evaluated as green and renewable corrosion inhibitor for mild steel in 1.0 mol/L H3PO4 solution. The inhibition behaviour was studied using mass loss, potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements. The chemical structure of PPE was investigated using Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and ultraviolet-visible (UV–vis) spectroscopy. The corrosion morphology of mild steel was analysed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The adsorption thermodynamics and kinetics was discussed. The results show that PPE confers an acceptable long-term effect (inhibition efficiency of 95.0% and 92.8% for corroding 23 h and 224 h in the presence of 5.0 g/L PPE inhibitor) and functions as a mixed inhibitor. The adsorption of PPE on mild steel simultaneously follows the Langmuir, El-Awady and Temkin isotherms at 35, 45 and 55 °C. PPE is mixed adsorption dominated with physical adsorption at room temperature or with higher PPE concentrations. PPE possesses many polar functional groups such as hydroxyl, carbonyl and hetero-aromatic rings. The inhibition mechanism is closely related to these polar groups, as is the surface coverage of steel.

Background: Obesity is a serious health problem in the world. We thought that the activity and safety of natural plants and/or foods are very important in the management of therapy for obesity. Rhus verniciflua (R. verniciflua) is also known as lacquer tree in Japan and Korea, and it is consumed as food ingredients and/or traditional herbal medicine. We prepared an extract from R. verniciflua leaves (Rv-PEM01-99) to develop a new functional food material and/or nutritional supplements. Objective: This study evaluated the anti-obesity effects of the Rv-PEM01-99 in high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice. Design: Six-week-old male C57BL/6J mice were divided into three groups: group I (HFD group), group II (HFD + 1% Rv-PEM01-99 group), and group III (HFD + 2% Rv-PEM01-99 group). Throughout the 56-day treatment period, body weights of these mice were checked twice a week. After 56 days, blood biochemical analyses were performed. Results: In animal studies, no death or abnormalities in food consumption were observed between groups I, II, and III. Body weight gain in the groups administered Rv-PEM01-99 was less than that in group I. In particular, body weight gain in group III was significantly less than that in group I after 52 days of Rv-PEM01-99 administration. In addition, intra-abdominal fat and leptin levels in group III were significantly lower than those in group I. HPLC and LC/MS analysis showed a quercetin derivative as an active compound in Rv-PEM01-99. Conclusion: Rv-PEM01-99, containing a quercetin derivative, showed anti-obesity effect in HFD-fed mice. It could therefore be useful as food material and/or nutritional supplement for management of obesity.

BACKGROUND: The spread of phytocomplex application and justification of its selective effects on tumour cells (mainly due to the presence of flavonoids) require research of its cytotoxic and immunomodulatory activity. AIM: The goal was to study the direct cytotoxic effect of the phytocomplex and its modulating effect on the cytotoxic activity of the donor's mononuclear blood cells in in vitro experiments. METHODS: The phytocomplex was a dry extract from marsh cinquefoil, creeping alfalfa and common hop; its main active ingredients were flavonoids. Transplantable monolayer cultures of lung adenocarcinoma, colorectal cancer, erythroblastic leukaemia, and fibroblasts were used as target cells. The cytotoxic activity was assessed using a cytotoxic test based on the selective ability to live cells to reduce MTT (3-[4, 5-dimethyltriazol-2-yl]-2, 5 diphenyltetrazolium bromide) to formazan in mitochondria. Quantitative determination of formazan was performed using spectrophotometry. RESULTS: A direct cytotoxic effect of the phytocomplex in concentrations of at least 2.5 mg/ml on tumour cells has been established. Its modulating effect on the cytotoxic activity of mononuclear blood cells at a concentration of 0.05 mg/ml was shown. The phytocomplex in doses of 0.25 and 0.5 mg/ml increased the killer activity of the mononuclear cells in a diseased person's blood, but did not affect these blood cells in a healthy donor. Incubation of lymphocytes with a phytocomplex for 24 hours increased the cytotoxic activity of mononuclear cells by 20-25%. CONCLUSION: The direct cytotoxic effect of the phytocomplex and its modulating effect on the cytotoxic activity of mononuclear blood cells in model experiments in vitro have been established.

Resistant plants are one of the disease control techniques that considered to be effective. Resistant plants can be produced in various ways including the application of plant extracts. The aim of this study was to examine the ability of several plant extracts to increase the resistance of rice plants to bacterial leaf blight (BLB) caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo). A total of 13 plants were extracted and applied in two methods, which were seed treatment and seedling treatment which sprayed on two-week old rice seedlings. Xoo bacteria were inoculated on rice plants two weeks after planting. The observations on the intensity of BLB disease infection showed that water hyacinth extract (Eichhornia crassippes), spiny amaranth (Amaranthus spinosus) and jasmine leaves (Jasminum grandiflorum) can suppress the development of BLB disease in both application methods. The application of plant extracts as inducing agents needs to be repeated to maintain the activated plant defense mechanism.

This study aimed to determine the phytochemical components, microbial inhibitory effectiveness and antioxidant properties of Aerva lanata plant extracts. The whole plant showed various medicinal applications in folklore and traditional medicine in various parts of the world. The organic extracts such as ethanol, ethyl acetate, chloroform, acetone, water and methanol were subjected for various phytochemical analysis and confirmed for the existence of flavonoids, glycosides, terpenoids and alkaloid containing components. Alternatively, the extracts were performed for the antibacterial activities against the microbial pathogens and antioxidant properties. Results indicated that, the solvent extracts showed prominent activity against the tested strains. The MIC concentrations of plant were detected from 5 mg/ml to 40 mg/ml. The plant extract was highly effective against E. coli and E. aerogenes and the MIC was 5 mg/ml. In addition, the extracts noted promising antioxidant activities. The antioxidant activities were dose dependent manner. In conclusion, A. lanata extracts showed that significant major phytochemicals and effective antioxidant and anti-microbial properties. Background In this research, different active phytochemical constituents present in Cleome heratensis (C. heratensis) from Capparaceae family were investigated. Moreover, the fatty acids present in the seed and aerial parts of the plant were identified by gas chromatography (GC) after esterification of the oil. Antioxidant activity of the aerial parts and seed of C. heratensis methanolic extract over 2,2′-diphenylpicryl-1-hydrazyl (DPPH) was investigated using ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectrophotometer. Methods To study total phenolic compounds and flavonoids, the plant was extracted from ethanol by ultrasonic method, then further extracted with other solvents. Amounts of anthocyanins and tannins/condensed tannins were determined by their corresponding ethanolic and acetone extracts. Antioxidant activity of the plant species was studied by a spectrophotometric method using 80% methanolic extract. Results The high content of phenolics as 16.915 mg tannic acid equivalents per gram of dry matter (TAE/g DM), tannins (12.231 mg TA/gr DM) and condensed tannins (4.086 mg TA/g DM) was obtained for the C. heratensis extract. The most flavonoids content was found 4.444 rutin equivalents (in mg) per gram of dry matter (mg RE/g DM) in plant’s aerial extract. The most amount of anthocyanin (0.48 mmol/gr WM) was observed in flowering stage. Antioxidant activity of the aerial parts and seed of C. heratensis methanolic extract were 11.92 and 63.54 mg/mL IC50, respectively. Conclusion High level of phenolic components including flavonoids, proanthocyanidins and tannins was detected in the extract of aerial parts of the plant. The oil of seed of this plant is a rich source of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. Finally, C. heratensis aerial part extract was found as an excellent natural antioxidant.

Skin problems especially the aging and darkening are the major esthetic problems in human beings. Various natural compounds has been used in order to deal with unwanted skin spots until past to the present. The orientation of people who take care of themselves towards natural products is growing increasingly nowadays. Microalgae species with both great taxonomic diversity and high environmental stability could be a good source for cosmetic products. In this context, the tyrosinase inhibitory activities of Arthrospira platensis ethanol and water extracts were evaluated in the present study. The ethanol extract showed the higher inhibitory activity on tyrosinase enzyme (IC50:1.4 × 10- 3 g/mL) than water extract (IC50:7.2 × 10- 3 g/mL). Due to their substrate like structure, ferulic and caffeic acids in ethanol extract may probably be the main inhibitors of tyrosinase. The higher antioxidant capacity of water extract although the lower total phenolic content indicates that the main contributor of the antioxidant capacity might probably not the phenolic compounds. © 2018 South African Association of Botanists

Spirulina platensis is a “super-food” and has attracted researchers’ attention due toits anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and analgesic properties. Herein, we investigated the antinociceptive effects of Spirulina in different rodent behavior models of inflammatory pain. Male Swiss mice were treated with Spirulina (3–300 mg/kg, p.o.), indomethacin (10 mg/kg, p.o.), or vehicle (0.9% NaCl 10 mL/kg). Behavioral tests were performed with administration of acetic acid (0.6%, i.p.), formalin 2.7% (formaldehyde 1%, i.pl.), menthol (1.2 µmol/paw, i.pl.), cinnamaldehyde (10 nmol/paw, i.pl.), capsaicin (1.6 µg/paw, i.pl.), glutamate (20 µmol/paw, i.pl.), or naloxone (1 mg/kg, i.p.).The animals were also exposed to the rotarod and open field test to determine possible effects of Spirulina on locomotion and motor coordination. The quantitative phytochemical assays exhibited thatSpirulina contains significant concentrations of total phenols and flavonoid contents, as well as it showed a powerful antioxidant effect with the highest scavenging activity.Oral administration of Spirulina completely inhibited the abdominal contortions induced by acetic acid (ED50 = 20.51 mg/kg). Spirulinatreatment showed significant inhibition of formalin-induced nociceptive behavior during the inflammatory phase, and the opioid-selective antagonist markedly blocked this effect. Furthermore, our data indicate that the mechanisms underlying Spirulina analgesia appear to be related to its ability to modulate TRMP8 and TRPA1, but not by TRPV1 or glutamatergic system. Spirulina represents an orally active and safe natural analgesic that exhibits great therapeutic potential for managing inflammatory pain disorders.

A wide range of analytical techniques are reported for the determination of cinnamaldehyde (CCHO) and eugenol (EOH) in plant extracts and herbal formulations either alone or in combination. Nevertheless, sustainable/green analytical techniques for the estimation of CCHO and EOH either alone or in combination are scarce in the literature. Accordingly, the present research was carried out to establish a rapid, highly sensitive, and sustainable high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) technique for the simultaneous estimation of CCHO and EOH in the traditional and ultrasound-assisted methanolic extracts of Cinnamomum zeylanicum,C. burmannii, and C. cassia and their essential oils. The simultaneous estimation of CCHO and EOH was performed through NP-18 silica gel 60 F254S HPTLC plates. The cyclohexane/ethyl acetate (90:10, v v−1) solvent system was optimized as the mobile phase for the simultaneous estimation of CCHO and EOH. The greenness score of the HPTLC technique was predicted using AGREE software. The entire analysis was carried out at a detection wavelength of 296 nm for CCHO and EOH. The sustainable HPTLC technique was observed as linear in the range 10–2000 ng band−1 for CCHO and EOH. The proposed technique was found to be highly sensitive, rapid, accurate, precise, and robust for the simultaneous estimation of CCHO and EOH. The content of CCHO in traditional methanolic extracts of C. zeylanicum,C. burmannii, and C. cassia was found to be 96.36, 118.49, and 114.18 mg g−1, respectively. However, the content of CCHO in ultrasound-assisted methanolic extracts of C. zeylanicum,C. burmannii, and C. cassia was found to be 111.57, 134.39, and 129.07 mg g−1, respectively. The content of CCHO in essential oils of C. zeylanicum,C. burmannii, and C. cassia was found to be 191.20, 214.24, and 202.09 mg g−1, respectively. The content of EOH in traditional methanolic extracts of C. zeylanicum,C. burmannii, and C. cassia was found to be 73.38, 165.41, and 109.10 mg g−1, respectively. However, the content of EOH in ultrasound-assisted methanolic extracts of C. zeylanicum,C. burmannii, and C. cassia was found to be 87.20, 218.09, and 121.85 mg g−1, respectively. The content of EOH in essential oils of C. zeylanicum,C. burmannii, and C. cassia was found to be 61.26, 79.21, and 69.02 mg g−1, respectively. The amounts of CCHO and EOH were found to be significantly higher in ultrasound-assisted extracts of all species compared to its traditional extraction and hence ultrasound extraction has been proposed as a superior technique for the extraction of CCHO and EOH. The AGREE analytical score of the present analytical technique was predicted as 0.75, suggesting excellent greenness profile of the proposed analytical technique. Based on all these observations and results, the proposed sustainable HPTLC technique can be successfully used for the simultaneous estimation of CCHO and EOH in different plant extracts and herbal products.

Ethnopharmacological relevance: Tabebuia pallida (Lindl.) Miers (T. pallida) is a well-known native Caribbean medicinal plant. The leaves and barks of T. pallida are used as traditional medicine in the form of herbal or medicinal tea to manage cancer, fever, and pain. Moreover, extracts from the leaves of T. pallida showed anticancer activity. However, the chemical profile and mechanism of anticancer activity of T. pallida leaves (TPL), stem bark (TPSB), root bark (TPRB) and flowers (TPF) remain unexplored. Aim of the study: The present study was designed to explore the regulation of apoptosis by T. pallida using Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma (EAC) cultured cells and an EAC mouse model. LC-ESI-MS/MS was used for compositional analysis of T. pallida extracts. Materials and methods: Dried and powdered TPL, TPSB, TPRB and TPF were extracted with 80% methanol. Using cultured EAC cells and EAC-bearing mice with and without these extracts, anticancer activities were studied by assessing cytotoxicity and tumor cell growth inhibition, changes in life span of mice, and hematological and biochemical parameters. Apoptosis was analyzed by microscopy and expression of selected apoptosis-related genes (Bcl-2, Bcl-xL, NFκ-B, PARP-1, p53, Bax, caspase-3 and -8) using RT-PCR. LC-ESI-MS analysis was performed to identify the major compounds from active extracts. Computer aided analyses was undertaken to sort out the best-fit phytoconstituent of total ten isolated compounds of this plant for antioxidant and anticancer activity. Results: In EAC mice compared with untreated controls, the TPL extract exhibited the highest cancer cell toxicity with significant tumor cell growth inhibition (p < 0.001), reduced ascites by body weight (p < 0.01), increased the life span (p < 0.001), normalized blood parameters (RBC/WBC counts), and increased the levels of superoxide dismutase and catalase. TPL-treated EAC cells showed increased apoptotic characteristics of membrane blebbing, chromatin condensation and nuclear fragmentation, and caspase-3 activation, compared with untreated EAC cells. Moreover, annexin V-FITC and propidium iodide signals were greatly enhanced in response to TPL treatment, indicating apoptosis induction. Pro- and anti-apoptotic signaling after TPL treatment demonstrated up-regulated p53, Bax and PARP-1, and down-regulated NFκ-B, Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL expression, suggesting that TPL shifts the balance of pro- and anti-apoptotic genes towards cell death. LC-ESI-MS data of TPL showed a mixture of glycosides, lapachol, and quercetin antioxidant and its derivatives that were significantly linked to cancer cell targets. The compound, pelargonidin-3-O-glucoside was found to be most effective in computer aided models. Conclusions: In conclusion, the TPL extract of T. pallida possesses significant anticancer activity. The tumor suppressive mechanism is due to apoptosis induced by activation of antioxidant enzymes and caspases and mediated by a change in the balance of pro- and anti-apoptotic genes that promotes cell death.

Plant polyphenols have beneficial antioxidant effects on human health, practices aimed at preserving their content in foods and/or reusing food by-products are encouraged. The impact of the traditional practice of the water curing procedure of chestnuts, which prevents insect/mould damage during storage, was studied to assess the release of polyphenols from the fruit. Metabolites extracted from pericarp and integument tissues or released in the medium from the water curing process were analyzed by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight-mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS) and electrospray-quadrupole-time of flight-mass spectrometry (ESI-qTOF-MS). This identified: (i) condensed and hydrolyzable tannins made of (epi)catechin (procyanidins) and acid ellagic units in pericarp tissues, (ii) polyphenols made of gallocatechin and catechin units condensed with gallate (prodelphinidins) in integument counterparts, (iii) metabolites resembling those reported above in the wastewater from the chestnut curing process. Comparative experiments were also performed on aqueous media recovered from fruits treated with processes involving: (i) tap water, (ii) tap water containing an antifungal Lb. pentosus strain, (iii) wastewater from a previous curing treatment. These analyses indicated that the former treatment determines a 6–7-fold higher release of polyphenols in the curing water with respect to the other ones. This event has a negative impact on the luster of treated fruits but qualifies the corresponding wastes as a source of antioxidants. Such a phenomenon does not occur in wastewater from the other curing processes, where the release of polyphenols was reduced, thus preserving the chestnut’s appearance. Polyphenol profiling measurements demonstrated that bacterial presence in water hampered the release of pericarp metabolites. This study provides a rationale to traditional processing practices on fruit appearance and qualifies the corresponding wastes as a source of bioactive compounds for other nutraceutical applications.

Nowadays, biodegradable antimicrobial packaging materials draw substantial attention and are considered one of the preferred emerging technologies to be used in the food industry. In this study, we have reported developing a two-component, chitosan (CS) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) based films loaded with natural extract of Ocimum tenuiflorum via solvent casting technique. Experimental results showed that all the components were well dispersed, resulting in complete homogenous films. FTIR-ATR spectral analysis indicated strong interaction between the film matrix components, which also gets reflected by the films' physical properties. Transparent biodegradable films have resulted from the mixture and incorporation of the natural agent/extracts influenced light barrier, water resistance, moisture content (9.89–9.01%), and DPPH radical scavenging properties (antioxidant value ~41.1%) of the CS/PVA films. For maize, the potential preventive role of foliar spraying with an extract derived from maize grain (MEg, 2%), silymarin (Sm, 0.5 mM), or silymarin-enriched MEg (MEg-Sm) in attenuating the stress effects of cadmium (Cd, 0.5 mM) was examined using a completely randomized design layout. Under normal conditions, foliar spraying with MEg, Sm, or MEg-Sm was beneficial (with MEg-Sm preferred) for maize plants, whereas the benefit was more pronounced under Cd stress. The use of Cd through irrigation water decreased plant growth traits, photosynthetic efficiency, including instantaneous carboxylation efficiency, Fv/Fm, and pigment contents, and hormonal contents (e.g., auxin, gibberellins, cytokinins including trans-zeatin, and salicylic acid). These undesired findings were due to an increase in Cd content, leading to increased levels of oxidative stress (O2•− and H2O2), ionic leakage, and lipid peroxidation. Therefore, this damage resulted in an increase in the activities of nonenzymatic antioxidants, Sm, antioxidative enzymes, and enzyme gene expression. However, under Cd stress, although foliar spray with MEg or Sm had better findings than control, MEg-Sm had better findings than MEg or Sm. Application of MEg-Sm greatly increased photosynthesis efficiency, restored hormonal homeostasis, and further increased the activities of various antioxidants, Sm, antioxidative enzymes, and enzyme gene expression. These desired findings were due to the suppression of the Cd content, and thus the levels of O2•−, H2O2, ionic leakage, and lipid peroxidation, which were positively reflected in the growth and accumulation of dry matter in maize plants. The data obtained in this study recommend applying silymarin-enriched maize grain extract (MEg-Sm at 0.24 g Sm L‒1 of MEg) as a spray solution to maize plants when exposed to excess Cd in soil or irrigation water.

Background Ruminal methane (CH4) emissions from ruminants not only pollute the environment and exacerbate the greenhouse effect, but also cause animal energy losses and low production efficiency. Consequently, it is necessary to find ways of reducing methane emissions in ruminants. Studies have reported that feed additives such as nitrogen-containing compounds, probiotics, prebiotics, and plant extracts significantly reduce ruminant methane; however, systematic reviews of such studies are lacking. The present article summarizes research over the past five years on the effects of nitrogen-containing compounds, probiotics, probiotics, and plant extracts on methane emissions in ruminants. The paper could provide theoretical support and guide future research in animal production and global warming mitigation. Methods This review uses the Web of Science database to search keywords related to ruminants and methane reduction in the past five years, and uses Sci-Hub, PubMed, etc. as auxiliary searchers. Read, filter, list, and summarize all the retrieved documents, and finally complete this article. Results Most of the extracts can not only significantly reduce CH4 greenhouse gas emissions, but they will not cause negative effects on animal and human health either. Therefore, this article reviews the mechanisms of CH4 production in ruminants and the application and effects of N-containing compounds, probiotics, prebiotics, and plant extracts on CH4 emission reduction in ruminants based on published studies over the past 5 years. Conclusion Our review provides a theoretical basis for future research and the application of feed additives in ruminant CH4 emission reduction activities.

Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) is not only easy to grow, but it is also common in diets around the world. This study was conducted to determine the impact of Chinese chive (Allium tuberosum Rottler), soybean (Glycine max L.) leaf, and soybean stem extracts on lettuce plants’ secondary substances, minerals, amino acids, and free sugars. This study was carried out in order to better understand which types of plant extract applications are most effective in increasing lettuce plants’ nutritional value. While not all applications produced an increased nutritional value in the lettuce plants, we found that soybean leaf extract treatments increased the Mg and Ca contents and Chinese chive treatments increased the Fe contents in the lettuce plants. Additionally, glucose and maltose contents in lettuce plants were higher after treatments of Chinese chive and soybean leaf extracts. Finally, all selected extracts increased the total and free amino acid levels in our test plants.
