Shuweihat, which is now producing 1,500 MW of electricity, as well as 100 million gallons of drinking water a day, is Abu Dhabi's latest, and the world's largest, independent power and desalination project. The Abu Dhabi Electricity and Water Authority, established in 1998, serves more than 1.4 million people. The emirates' current water demand is estimated at 600 mg/d, three times its 1998 level. To keep pace with demand, the UAE's installed generating capacity has grown from 2,000 MW seven years ago to just under 8,000 MW this year.

The article reports that U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy is opposing the Cape Wind project that is expected to produce pollution-free and renewable energy. The Massachusetts Energy Facility Sitting Board says that the project will lower local residents' sky-high electricity bills while providing 75 percent of their power needs. Cape Wind also is predicted to create between 600 and 1,000 jobs in the region and spur tourism, with negligible impact on local ecosystems. Many of his prosperous neighbors are equally alarmed. They have raised about $7 million to oppose the project. A provision in the Coast Guard and Maritime Transportation Act of 2006 gives the governor of Massachusetts right to veto the Cape Wind project despite a finding by the Coast Guard that the project would not harm navigation. It could cripple offshore wind power development.
