This article presents an argument that although teacher education programs may aim to prepare teachers to be antiracist agents of change, they often fall short of doing so and that investigations of why can provide essential insights for teacher education. The authors use the critique of liberalism tenet of critical race theory to analyze three teacher candidates' experiences learning to teach across three different types of teacher preparation programs and discuss the implications for preparing teachers to be antiracist agents of change. The authors then propose guiding principles for developing teacher candidates' antiracist stance on teaching by situating race and justice in relation to the task of teaching, offering sufficient opportunities to learn about schools and communities as socio-historical and cultural settings, and leveraging pre-teacher education identities for antiracist teaching. "Space wins" is a long-held homiletical maxim. Usually, this means that architecture and pulpit style influence how sermons are delivered and heard. What is less frequently considered is how monuments and memorials affect proclamation in space. Among other things, Confederate monuments make claims on space, communicate idealized aesthetics, and preach about hopes for a particular eschatological community. This essay examines pedagogical approaches to preaching that confronts Confederate monuments. It is based upon courses I offered in 2022 at The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, and through the Association of Chicago Theological Schools D.Min. program in Chicago, Illinois. After articulating a pedagogy drawn from the work of Leonora Tubbs Tisdale and Willie James Jennings, I examine three approaches to place-based pedagogy that serve anti-racist preaching by (1) analyzing monuments within the teaching location, (2) fostering reflective participation in pilgrimage to the National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and (3) inviting students to research monuments in their home community and confront them through preaching. These approaches can foster preaching that is better attuned to addressing localized histories, better able to identify and confront specific aspects of white supremacy that are concretized in a community, and more adept at offering a gospel proclamation that is finely tuned to the transformative needs of a particular place. White hegemony is pervasive in and through music education, demanding that teachers and scholars take deliberate social and political actions in order to address racial injustice. Such actions are often built upon propositional knowledge or knowledge that can be evaluated by conceptual reason and verified as true or false (Perry and Shotwell 2009; Shotwell 2011). The purpose of this philosophical inquiry is two-fold: to problematize the prioritization of propositional knowledge when engaging in antiracist efforts and to suggest the need for more holistic accounts of antiracism that combine propositional knowledge with affective understandings. I argue that solely propositional approaches can foster disingenuous antiracism rather than substantive action and dialogue. Poet Audre Lorde emphasized the importance of synthesized understandings, and poetry and literary works such as Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye engage with both propositional concepts and affective experiences, which can lead to deeper understandings for the reader. I suggest that synthesized understandings are also possible in music education. Using preparing for a performance of Joel Thompson's choral work Seven Last Words of the Unarmed as an example, I offer sharing multiple narratives, recognizing the importance of affect, and taking actions based on synthesized understandings as considerations for antiracist pedagogy. In Australia, racism remains a challenge to dismantle within public health institutions. This paper examines the pressures I experienced from some public health scholars and practitioners to conform to colonial and positivist approaches in knowledge production that still dominate the field. To challenge this hegemony, my research practices turned into what Mignolo calls "epistemic disobedience," an approach to delink from Western ways of producing knowledge. Based on this experiential learning process, I argue epistemic disobedience should not be overlooked in the discussion of decolonizing research and antiracist pedagogy in the context of doctoral training. What tactics are high school educators using to teach about socio-political changes in the past and present? Five educators in the province of Alberta (two women, three men; four urban, one rural; four White, one Arab; four without visible religious garb, one Muslim in hijab) explored content they considered to be "radical" and how they teach about (and for) significant sociopolitical changes focused on making society hurt less. Coming from a perspective of symbolic evil, radical love, and radical imagination as inherent to beneficial social movements, the researchers used process and dramaturgical coding to analyze participant insights about decolonial and antiracist education as well as teaching for gender and sexual justice. Participants shared insights about the role of school context and teacher positionality, what might shape an educator to teach for radical change, as well as several tactics: operationalizing positionality, supplementing curriculum, challenging assumptions, subverting school rules, and addressing emotionality. This conceptual piece uses Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a way to recognize systemic inequities within sorority and fraternity life (SFL) communities, and to advance meaningful change on college campuses. As sociologists of education, we're deeply concerned about the growing censorship in our schools and the attack on teaching the truth about our history and present-day inequality. We also recognize how an educational past mired in antiblack practices and policies remains with us today and thus why teachers are still faced with navigating censorship and constraints on what they know are critical and proven pedagogies. This article explores the continued need for "fugitive" practices to employ educational models that de-center Eurocentric narratives and center Black or other marginalized cultures and ways of knowing. We argue that educators committed to antiracist teaching can learn from the legacy of the art of Black teaching and how it was subversively taken up and put into practice by Black teachers over time (Gay, 2002; Givens, 2021; Walker, 2018). Background -- Limited work has been done to integrate ethical leadership and anti-racist school leadership practice. Through narrative ethics, this paper links caring with race-consciousness to form a foundation for critical praxis. Purpose -- The authors address the limitations of caring leadership by arguing for a race-conscious narrative ethics that promotes communal responsibility for students, with specific attention to racialized and marginalized students. Research Design – This conceptual paper draws on caring theory, feminism, womanism, and culturally responsive leadership. The paper considers racism within a United States context, drawing from theory developed in additional contexts. Analysis – The paper builds from the limitations of caring theory and seeks alternative caring ethics from critiques and African-American historical struggles for sustainable and anti-racist praxis. Results -- The authors argue that predispositions toward caring among teachers and school leaders are insufficient for the project of anti-racist education because of uncritical assumptions of sameness, misplaced empathy, and the evasion of race and racism. The resulting impersonal caring reproduces racist power relations and reinforces standardized and competitive notions of responsibility for children, forestalling opportunities for collective action. Conclusions -- As an alternative to impersonal caring, the authors explore the possibilities of deepening leaders' engagement in race-conscious caring through the significance of experience, the quality of caring relations, and the value of narrative ethics. This article explores the importance of incorporating Native American and Indigenous histories and perspectives into educational institutions in the United States. The author emphasizes the need for antiracist pedagogies that acknowledge the colonial histories and ties of these institutions to Indigenous lands. This research, conducted jointly by history and modern language teacher educators working in a higher education institution, evaluates the impact of a project to 'Decolonise Postgraduate Teacher Education', started in summer 2020. This project involved the creation of an action planner aimed to cultivate tutors' and student teachers' racial literacy and empower them to tackle racism in school. The research explores the impact and challenges of the project from the perspectives of the student teachers and tutors involved and establishes the next steps to decolonise the programme. A self-study approach was adopted, as the tutors' and student teachers' perceptions were recorded in diaries. One finding from the research is that the project had a positive impact on the participants' racial literacy and allowed them to look critically at resources and curriculum. The research also identified many challenges in decolonising subjects in secondary schools; for instance the considerable variation in approaches taken by different departments and the underrepresentation of individuals from ethnically diverse communities on the course, but also in the wider teaching and teacher educator workforce. Finally, the research revealed areas where more progress was needed, for example supporting student teachers further in recognising microaggressions and dealing with racist incidents. This article discusses the state licensing requirements for antiracism education for physicians in the United States. The authors conducted a review of physician accreditation requirements for each state and found that as of August 2023, 12 out of 50 states have antiracism training requirements. This report critically reviews developments in geographical education through the themes of anti-racism and decoloniality, reflecting on the silences around these issues across previous progress reports and arguing that the present moment might be understood in terms of a decolonial turn. Publication trends and increasing attention associated with the turn are unevenly distributed, contested and attenuated by structural issues surrounding the recruitment and retention of more diverse geographers. Drawing on theories of antiracist pedagogy, pandemic pedagogy, and racial identity development, this article demonstrates the benefits of campus-wide virtual conversations, arguing that they provide students in particular with salient opportunities to synthesize antiracist theory and praxis while further developing their racial identities. Using data from two such campus conversations, "Antiracism, Intersectionality, and Empowerment" and "Racial Trauma and White Fragility," we offer a series of effective strategies, lessons learned, and preliminary antiracist outcomes. Although the field of mathematics education has made gains in centering the need for justice-oriented approaches and antiracist teaching practices in teacher education, much of this work remains in its infancy. Moreover, research focused on this area highlights teacher candidates' knowledge and dispositions and often ignores the role of the mathematics teacher educators facilitating the process. We contend that mathematics teacher educators must pay more attention to how intersectional identities, contexts, Mirror Tests, and principles of Rehumanizing Mathematics manifest in teacher education to better understand how teacher candidates develop political knowledge in teaching mathematics. To this end, we introduce a framework of considerations, which we call a compass, that identifies four dimensions (or strands) and offers guiding questions for mathematics teacher educators to consider. We offer examples from a multi-site research study to illuminate each dimension and build the case for the necessity of braiding the four strands together as we engage in this line of work. Anti-racism is an imperative for those committed to a world and planet free of the manifestations of racial oppression. This correspondence between two critical women teacher educators illustrates ideologically aligned 'work friends' theorising anti-racist pedagogy in the context of heightened sociopolitical uncertainty. We explore creative possibilities for uncertainty-oriented anti-racist pedagogy vis-à-vis the aims of inquiry-based, social justice teacher preparation. We co-develop pedagogical insights using an anti-racist intersectional frame as an analytical lens for re-viewing teaching artefacts, reflecting on lived experiences, and posing probing questions. Eschewing feigning pedagogical mastery, we employ the epistolary form to reflexively interrogate the nexus of anti-racism, pedagogy, uncertainty, and teacher education. This exchange contributes (a) an intersectional framework for the practice of antiracist pedagogy, and (b) a model for the emergent, dialogic process of letter writing as a tool for critical collaborative teacher inquiry. Purpose: Research has documented how white teachers often fall short of their anti-racist intentions. However, much of this research is done with preservice teachers or teachers across disciplines. The authors investigate stories in which white English teachers who teach substantial proportions of black students and who self-reported anti-racist goals nevertheless fell short of those goals. The purpose of the study is to understand the tensions between racial liberalism and racial literacy in their pedagogy. Design/methodology/approach: The authors snowball sampled 12 veteran white high school English teachers (3–27 years' experience) who taught in schools with substantial proportions of black students. The authors used a two-stage interview process to narrow the sample to 7 teachers who confirmed their anti-racist intentions and who wrote narratives of moments when they tried to be anti-racist, but the lesson failed in some way. The authors used a three-stage narrative analysis to analyze how racial liberalism and racial literacy were reflected in the narratives. Findings: The veteran English teachers, despite their anti-racist intentions, told narratives that reflected racial liberalism, portraying racism as an individual and interpersonal phenomenon. Some narratives showed teachers who had taken steps toward racial literacy, but no narratives showed a fully developed sense of racial literacy, portraying the layers of institutional and structural racism in English education. Originality/value: The sample suggests that veteran white English teachers are subject to similar limited racial literacies as novice teachers. While the authors found glimmers of racial literacy, they still note the work necessary to equip veteran English teachers with the racial literacies necessary for anti-racist instruction. Purpose: This study aims to explore the perceived barriers that a secondary English teacher faced when attempting to discuss racial injustice through young adult literature in Mississippi. Design/methodology/approach: The authors rely on Critical Whiteness Studies and qualitative methods to explore the following research question: What are the barriers that a White ELA teacher perceives when teaching about racial injustice through The Hate U Give? Findings: The authors found that there were several perceived barriers to discussing modern racial injustice in the Mississippi ELA classroom. The participating teacher indicated the following barriers: a lack of racial literacy, fears of discomfort and an urge to avoid politics. Underscored by a long overdue call to challenge racism in teacher education (TE), we set forth to examine our own university TE classrooms to understand how we are both perpetuating and disrupting systemic racism and decentering whiteness, such that we can move toward sustained antiracist pedagogy for ourselves, our institutions, teacher candidates, and school communities. Undergirded by Critical Race Theory, this paper presents the development of an Antiracist Pedagogy Course Audit– a tool to develop instructor capacity to engage in critically reflective practices in five key areas: 1) Instructor Critical Consciousness; 2) Understanding Students' Backgrounds and Experiences; 3) Course Readings and Content; 4) Classroom Learning Environment; and 5) Assignments and Assessments. In recent years, school psychology has given increasing attention to issues of social justice and antiracism. While such orientations are not new, the scope and centrality of these movements within the field are, as is the growing appreciation of the need to integrate them across all areas of professional activities and efforts in school psychology. The aim of this special topic section is to create a space for scholarship addressing a broad range of issues relevant to advancing equity and justice in school psychology. In particular, we seek to curate diverse scholarship that expands the ways we conceptualize, design, implement, and interpret school psychology research, as well as how we approach graduate preparation and practice in school psychology to advance equitable and just services for individuals from historically and systemically marginalized backgrounds. The resulting compilation of articles provide insight into how school psychologists can approach scholarship, practice, and professional education to advance antiracism, social justice, and equity. Themes include expanding the nature and scope of school psychology scholarship by confronting the detriments of whiteness and epistemic exclusion; centering equity, healing, and minoritized voices in practice; and leveraging diverse research methods, including participatory approaches, to elevate youth and family voices in addressing some of the most pressing issues in schools. In this essay, I draw on two black theorists of whiteness—W.E.B. Du Bois and the Reverend Thandeka—to examine how white supremacy and white racial identities emerge from and are fortified in the relations of white people to other white people. I use stories told by two white people from a rural, white farming community in Wisconsin—William and Delores—to flesh out and complicate Du Bois's and Thandeka's ideas. Unfortunately, antiracist efforts in education and teacher education have mostly ignored the significance of white people's relations to each other for the production and reproduction of white supremacy. This article examines the purposeful use of counternarrative to develop an antiracist school identity. Based on a seven-year ethnographic project at an elementary school in the southeast U.S., it illustrates how counternarrative can be employed as strategy to embed Critical Race Theory (CRT) into school equity discourse and, in doing so, help public schools disrupt majoritarian narratives that deny the salience of race. It argues that by developing counternarratives rooted in the perspectives and knowledge of teachers of color, and then using those counternarratives specifically for the purposes of strategizing, schools and researchers can help CRT achieve its activist function in K-12 school contexts. In the summer of 2020, powerful protests against police brutality took place throughout the United States in response to the unlawful deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and the shooting of Jacob Blake. Though the types of protests ranged from local grassroot organizations walking the streets to athletes using their platforms to address the injustices, the protests had one goal in mind—to bring attention, awareness, and hopefully change to an unjust legal system that consistently and disproportionately affects unarmed Black people. The aim of this article is to focus on the responses of both LeBron James and Doc Rivers to the shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man who was shot seven times in the back by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Using Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), as informed by Black Critical Theory (BlackCrit), we argue that the dynamic words of these two Black men not only operate as an act of protest and an act of resistance, but also they provide pedagogical enactments for being and becoming antiracist. This study explores the racial pedagogical decision making of teachers presented with the opportunity to address the #BlackLivesMatter movement in their classroom. Findings of more than 4,000 teachers indicate that suburban, urban, African American and Latino/a were most likely to address BLM through an antiracist positioning. Rural and more experienced teachers were the most likely to respond 'All Lives Matter' to a classroom scenario. Analysis of extended response items found that participants deployed three defences to avoid engaging with #BLM in their classrooms: constitutional, institutional and appropriateness. Previous research indicates pandemics have a traumatic effect on individuals. The COVID-19 pandemic has been traumatic for all students of all races and socioeconomic households. The pandemic has, however, intensified racial trauma by exacerbating racial disparities already existing in American society. Racial trauma has been linked to poor socioemotional health and academic performance in racial minority adolescents. For this reason, an examination of classroom strategies to address racial trauma is imperative in the conversation about Youths of Color's (YoC) return to the classroom post- COVID-19. This paper reviews racial trauma within the context of COVID-19 pandemic and posits antiracist pedagogies teachers may be an effective strategy to support YoC in processing racial trauma exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Problem: The field of human resource development (HRD) is recognized for its contributions to the body of literature on learning and performance. However, the lack of literature on problems emanating from the social systems (e. g. racism, sexism, ageism, sexual orientation, disability, to name a few) that create a barrier for optimal learning and performance is troubling. In this article, racism is called out as an enduring and pervasive social injustice that has become normalized and encompasses the whole of society as well as those spaces that are frequently occupied each day. Nonetheless the ideology of racism is egregious and continues to threaten individual well-being, dignity, and simply put, rights as a human being. As a program within numerous departments of higher education, the lack of literature that addresses racism and subsequently provide resources for educators is problematic. While it is understood that HRD is an interdisciplinary field that draws from multiple bodies of literature, the lack of contributions from HRD researchers, scholars, and practitioners on a topic that counteracts learning and performance is a problem. Solution: HRD is uniquely positioned as a field of practice with an affiliate in higher education. HRD researchers and scholars are often instructors in HRD educational programs. This unique position can hugely impact what is learned and therefore what is practiced in the workplace. We propose a framework for an anti-racism curriculum in HRD educational programs that teaches students, the future workforce, how to recognize and disrupt racism and contribute to building workplaces that are equitable, fair, and psychologically safe. Following the summer 2020 civil rights movement and increasing attention to the intersections of mathematics with politics and power, many math educators have reported a desire to implement an antiracist pedagogy and to examine the intersections of their subject with issues of equity, inclusion, and social justice. Many resources exist for K-12 math educators interested in incorporating social justice into their curricula, but resources are comparatively scarce for college and university instructors (though this is changing quickly!). We discuss why one may want to teach mathematics for social justice, how to begin to implement issues of social justice into postsecondary math courses, and publicly available social justice materials for postsecondary math courses.
