This research has analyzed the dynamics of collaborative practices towards the creation of an Entrepreneurial Ecosystem (EE), in the light of the theory of Knowledge-Based Development, by applying the Capital System. The qualitative method was adopted, with a process approach. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observation, and document analysis; and analyzed by narrative, temporal bracketing, and visual maps. We identified four phases that occurred for the creation of the ecosystem. For each of them, the knowledge capitals involved were pointed out, as well as the relationship dynamics between them. It was also shown how different actors have contributed to this process. As a theoretical contribution, the research advances in the application and understanding of CS and proposing a Dynamic Model for the formation of entrepreneurial ecosystems. Furthermore, it allowed the identification of a specific attribute to the Agent Capital, the leaderships, which are fundamental for the dynamics to happen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ELECTRONIC data processing , *INNOVATION management , *QUALITATIVE research - Abstract
Objective: This article presents the process data research approach as an opportunity to improve management studies and to create a roadmap for beginners. Process research is a sidelined way to conduct qualitative studies. The fundamental concern of the process approach is to capture and apprehend the meanings attributed to organizational phenomena directly in the field of research, aiming to understand and answer the questions of 'how' and 'why' events change over time. Method: This study reviews selected recent research on innovation management that used process research criteria (temporal orientation, units of analysis, sample, data, analytical strategies, and conceptual products) as the back-drop. Main Results: The main result of this paper is the creation of a ro-admap for applying the process research approach. Also, it highlights ele-ments of improvement for management studies from the process data approach. Relevance / Originality: This study provides several examples of qualitative process research in innovation. The proposed roadmap helps increase the rigor and uses of this research approach. Theoretical / Methodological Contributions: We offer an academic discussion on process research's role in improving (innovation) management studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This chapter unpacks how universities’ dynamic capabilities are mobilized to take on the role of fostering and orchestrating regional innovation ecosystems. Increasingly, universities are applying strategic and entrepreneurial management practices to be able to expand themselves into governance structures to deal with dynamic and changing environments. Different phases of an innovation ecosystem (initial stage, development, and renewal) require different key dynamic capabilities. We found that there is a fourth phase, the boost stage, in which an existing but declining innovation ecosystem requires an agent to be the propellant and revitalizer for its development cycle to be resumed and expanded. We address this issue with a unique Brazilian case study, an Alliance founded by three universities to develop the region into an environment conducive to innovation and entrepreneurship. This case study shows the role of universities as an orchestrator agent when there is a need to boost an ecosystem that is experiencing difficulties, by organizing, motivating, and supporting a network of stakeholders to drive the regional ecosystem. The research found that universities in declining ecosystems need to combine three dynamic capabilities at the same intensities in several actions to lead the local initiative.

International audience; The development of inter-firm cooperation is a major issue in government policies to support economic competitiveness. In order to optimize the spread and impact of these policies, the public authorities deploy specific mechanisms in which universities can play a central role. While the latter have every legitimacy to be active within the framework of support mechanisms for innovation or technology transfer, it seems less natural to involve them in operations outside these activities. We present the lessons learned from a longitudinal case study of an inter-firm cooperation program conducted in a state in southern Brazil through a partnership between the government and community universities in charge of its operational implementation. From a relational perspective, we analyze the determinants of this partnership in order to identify the relational rents produced by the networks of SMEs built into authentic territorial ecosystems: community access and propagation. We show that these rents are confronted with obstacles that constitute relational losses that must be minimized in order to optimize the effectiveness of the public policy pursued: inflexibility and distance from the target.; Le développement de la coopération inter-entreprises est un enjeu majeur des politiques gouvernementales de soutien à la compétitivité économique.

For employees of organizations to be able to act innovatively during their work routine, they must have Innovation Competences (ICs) developed. However, the majority of studies within this research area focus on the identification and measurement of ICs and the audience of students from academic institutions. Therefore, the objective of this study is to build a tool that helps Brazilian companies in their collaborators’ ICs development. For this, the Design Science Research methodology was used, which allows finding solutions instead of explanations to problems, generating greater impacts, through the creation of an artifact. As a result, it was possible to come to the construction of the Innovation Competences Development Cycle (ICDCs), which allows the collaborators’ ICs development. It is possible to conclude that the tool was able to develop collaborators’ ICs, considering that this, after going through processes linked to the application of the tool, evidenced a series of new individual behaviors. This paper analyses the role of universities as orchestrators of the development of a regional ecosystem that is conducive to innovation and entrepreneurship. We argue that universities in emerging economies, due to many social challenges, must go beyond their missions of teaching, research, and collaboration with industry for innovation. We present a unique case study of an alliance of three universities in Porto Alegre, Brazil that, in addition to being competitors in the above-mentioned missions, are orchestrating a network of stakeholders in this region to develop an ecosystem for innovation and entrepreneurship. We demonstrate that universities perform several orchestration processes that are consistent with the literature, such as fostering knowledge mobility, managing innovation appropriability, and increasing network stability. Furthermore, we found differences in how innovation ecosystems are orchestrated as compared to firm networks. In the case of innovation ecosystems, appropriability reaches the broader region, and the benefits are not limited to participant stakeholders. Such orchestration processes emerge when universities take on leadership positions in the region; they can influence the beginning of collective actions and projects as well as transfer responsibility, delegating power to other actors in the network. The innovation literature is growing rapidly and one of the of the main concerns is about the contexts that encourage and strengthen the results of innovation. Researches on innovation environments are still in its early stages. This paper sheds light on the process of fostering and developing an innovation ecosystem in cities with the perspective of institutional work, considering the need to institutionalize the collaboration. The method used was a multiple cases study, in a descriptive and processual approach. The study was conducted in two cities in Latin America: Porto Alegre and Florianopolis. The findings are that there is a logic in the process of institutionalization of collaboration that reflects on the development of the innovation ecosystem, which occurs in three phases involving three groups of actors: leaders, support and community. Understanding this process can help other cities or regions to promote their own innovation ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Health is one of the goals for the sustainable development at the global level, but emerging economies remain off-track. The Responsible research and innovation concept consider stakeholders’ inclusion a way to guarantee a positive impact. This study aims to know how the inclusion of multiple stakeholders in e-health occurs. We used in-depth interview and a survey with 26 companies in Brazil. We identified that Brazilian companies that develop products or services for the health sector behave in a similar way as companies in developed countries, especially regarding the inclusion of external stakeholders from the initial stages. Brazilian companies face the difficulties inherent in developing countries, related to heavy bureaucracy, and institutional inefficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The competitive gains acquired by collective action, through the phenomenon of collaborative networks can be considered responses to a series of pressures of the economic environment that limit or restrict the competitiveness of companies in the early age of globalization. Structured around information and social relations since 1990 has consolidated a new approach in the field of strategy, they propose to analyze organizations in the domestic sphere, arguing that the main sources of business competitiveness are endogenous. One of the endogenous resources in academic studies and empirical explanation of the performance of communities and nations, over the past two decades has been the social capital. In this sense, social capital becomes a resource strongly competitive, functioning as an enhancer of the individual and collective capacity through collaborative practices can become a source of improvement or maintenance of the competitiveness of member companies through collaborative networks. This is a key statement for the present study, which aimed to verify the relationship of social capital and competitiveness of collaborative networks of Serra Gaucha Wine cluster by studying networks APROVALE and APROBELO, while the specific objectives were to identify the factors explain the social capital and competitiveness, verification of company characteristics that influence the expression of these constructs as well, analysis of their correlations and finally comparing the levels of social capital and competitiveness of the two studied networks. For the methodology, we used a survey to measure social capital and competitiveness was the result of work of the research group TSO (Social Theory in Organizations) and the main statistical analysis used the factor analysis, linear regression, bivariate correlation Pearson, analysis of variance and descriptive statistics. The main results of the study are the presence of high levels of social capital in the Serra Gaúcha wine cluster evenly distributed between the three dimensions studied, the present high correlations between social capital and improve competitiveness, too distributed on three dimensions, the high correlation coefficients among them, and that these two constructs share determinant variables and essentially subjective. Still, before the results became possible to say that different combinations of elements linked to the two constructs lead two different results, or the idiosyncratic organizational realities. The study concludes highlighting the contributions confirmed by the literature, the differing contributions for literature, methodological contributions, research limitations and suggestions for future studies.

- Abstract
Ambidexterity supports firms during periods of technological transition cycles (TTCs), enabling them to achieve excellence in the management of new technologies, crucial for new markets entrance, and traditional ones, useful for maintaining the firm in markets they already play. Although this literature has been extensively studied, few studies have deepened on how a firm has organized ambidextrous to foster the technological transition process. We conducted a single case study with a process-based approach in a knowledge-intensive firm that underwent three TTCs in less than seven years. It was found that the firm proactively and reactively engaged in new TTCs. There was a reduction in transition cycles as the firm gained experience by incorporating new technologies and maturity of ambidextrous management. This work shows how a firm has organized itself regarding structures, incentives, and context to adapt to the changing environment, elucidating changes required to adapt. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OR*AT*MER (IP*AI+~IP*MP) → RC + RL + RA + RPO + RPR. The formation of interorganizational networks for the promotion of ecosystems is a strategy increasingly present on the agenda of public and private actors, as an alternative for local development. However, effectiveness is something very difficult to achieve, and much has been studied about the factors that contribute to the effectiveness of a collaborative environment and that, in turn, becomes essential for the promotion of innovation ecosystems. One of these factors is the governance of networks. Despite advances in governance research, more studies are published on the role of routine governance activities to promote greater collaboration. This research intends to fill this gap, analyzing the possibilities of governance functions that favor collaboration. To this end, a set of networks in the initial stage of formation, formed from the Pacto Alegre initiative, was researched. Nineteen purpose-oriented networks focused on promoting the local innovation ecosystem in the municipality of Porto Alegre were evaluated. These networks are formed by universities, the city of Porto Alegre, public agencies, companies and civil society associations and local leaders. The research method chosen to provide answers to the research question was Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA). As a result, it was identified that the Organize Resources, Arbitrate Tensions and Monitor Efforts and Results governance functions are necessary but not sufficient, and two combinations of conditions lead to collaboration. Two combinations of conditions were identified with high consistency: OR*AT*MER (IP*AI+~IP*MP) → RC + RL + RA + RPO + RPR. Finally, the study presents theoretical contributions by filling a knowledge gap about the governance functions that enhance the collaborative environment. As managerial contributions, we contributed to a greater understanding of what everyday governance functions are required for the success of collaboration of startup networks in formation, as well as specific recommendations for the forthcoming stages of network maturity of the networks studied.

Currently, organizational structures, specifically private companies, universities, and the public sector, seek innovation and technology in their processes to become more competitive in the market. These structures are known as Innovation Ecosystems, which are characterized as innovative activities that rely on collaboration agreements between companies and local institutions namely universities, research institutes, technology transfer centers, among others. (AUTIO; THOMAS, 2014). In this context, universities appear as a significant influencer and facilitator of the Innovation Ecosystems creation and development process. (FOSS; GIBSON, 2015). For delimitation purposes, this master's thesis is based on the perspective of ecosystemas-affiliation. (ADNER, 2017). Thus, a university may work as an ecosystem organizer, strategically applying its intellectual, reputable, and financial capitals to establish and maintain a well-built ecosystem. To do so, strong Dynamic Capabilities are required from it, and it is precisely in this sense that these capabilities provide a useful framework to think about ecosystems. Dynamic Capabilities, or DCs, refer to a company's ability to integrate, build, and reconfigure internal and external resources/competencies to innovate in rapidly changing environments (TEECE; PISANO; SHUEN, 1997; TEECE, 2007). In other words, from the recombination of current capabilities and their available resources, especially knowledge (as an intangible resource), a possible competitive advantage is obtained. The concept of Knowledge‐Based Dynamic Capabilities (KBDC) emerges from this DCs' perspective. In this sense, it is worth noting that it is essential to use the dimensions of Zheng, Zhang and Du (2011) to understand the influence of the microfoundations of the KBDC throughout the development of an innovation ecosystem. Thus, this thesis focuses on analyzing the microfoundations of the Knowledge‐Based Dynamic Capabilities for the development of an innovation ecosystem in a university. This empirical research employed a qualitative case study approach through interview conduction and data transcription. This study addresses four main contributions, which are (1) empirical pieces of evidence show that certain microfoundations exist during the university phases; (2) microfoundations related to different knowledge-based dynamic capabilities; (3) empirical pieces of evidence show the influence on ecosystem creation concerning different Knowledge‐Based Dynamic Capabilities; and (4) how dynamic capabilities impact ecosystem's creation. The results obtained in this study are intended to foster further research and discussion on different ways to analyze the microfoundations of the KBDC for the creation of an ecosystem in a university.

The traditional development of innovation often generates unknown impacts. The search for responsible innovation establishes the management of (external) stakeholders' interests as a way to minimize uncertainty and maintain or develop a competitive advantage. Also, there is a concern with ethical, social, and environmental aspects. The inclusion of stakeholders during the responsible innovation process enables the integration of new and significant knowledge. For inclusion to be leverage, dynamic capabilities are required. This thesis analyzed how dynamic capabilities leverage the inclusion of stakeholders in the innovation process. Two equipment developer companies from the healthcare sector, recognized worldwide, were analyzed. The sector was chosen by the potential to provide high-quality solutions that offer better results and reliability, improving productivity and service to patients. The analysis of the cases pointed to specific processes and routines for the inclusion of stakeholders, which constitutes the microfoundations of dynamic capabilities. The particular processes and routines are cocreation, memory creation, strategic partnerships, active participation in events, systematic observation of product use, encouraging training and qualification of users, and the establishment of multiple communication channels. From the microfoundations, generic and specific dynamic capabilities were identified, which leverage the inclusion. The comparative analysis of the cases pointed to four propositions: (1) The inclusion of stakeholders occurs throughout the responsible innovation process, favored by the Stage-gate model; (2) the inclusion of stakeholders in the responsible innovation process requires particular processes and routines; (3) the generic dynamic capabilities of sensing, seizing and transforming, and the specific dynamic capabilities, relational and Integrative knowledge, based on particular processes and routines, leverage the inclusion of stakeholders in the process of responsible innovation; and (4) specific dynamic capabilities contribute to greater responsible innovation maturity. Theoretical contributions stand out as the approximation of the theoretical lens of dynamic capabilities to the context of responsible innovation. Specifically, about dynamic capabilities, the possibility of operationalization is demonstrated, from its microfoundations. The concept of generic dynamic capabilities is developed – which leverage various processes, and specific dynamic capabilities – that leverage a given process. Empirical advances are mainly due to detailing the inclusion process, considered to be one of the governance aspects of responsible innovation. Another increase is to demonstrate to entrepreneurs and managers the case of global companies in the healthcare sector, recognized for responsibility in innovation. A responsible innovation governance model was also developed, inspired by the Canvas model, which contributes to companies evaluating and seeking responsible innovation development.

Innovating in business models for sustainability is the process of building solutions that create environmental, social and economic value, for the firm and its entire value chain. One of the possibilities for innovation is the transition from linear business models to circular business models. The understanding of how this process of transition from a linear to a circular business model occurs and evolves remains unknown. Through a single case study carried out with the Brazilian petrochemical company Braskem S.A., the process of transition from a linear to a circular business model was investigated, in light of the dynamic capabilities theory. Braskem, a commodities company with global operations, conceived in 2002 as a linear business model, began in recent years a process of transition to a circular business model. This case is a rare example, given that this type of business model transition is not common in this type of industry. It is also revealing, given that the entire history of the firm was explored, from a qualitative approach, with the application of procedural methodology. Interviews and secondary data were collected and analyzed using narrative, time scheduling, and visual maps. Four evolutionary phases of the business model innovation process for sustainability were identified: development, maturation, consolidation, and renewal of the value proposition. Each phase was associated with a different market differentiation strategy. It was found that the phase changes occurred because, over time, the exchange of differentiation strategies made the firm obtain a competitive advantage. The micro-foundations of dynamic capabilities that contributed to this innovation process were highlighted. A new dynamic capacity, called orchestrating, has been proposed. It is associated with the mobilization of resources external to the firm, to create value not only for itself but also for the other links in its value chain. Two micro-foundations of the transforming capacity (co-innovation and governance) and two of the orchestrating capacity (development of the value chain and influence on the value chain), presented themselves as essential for firms that are in transit from a linear model to a circular business model. A deepening of the sensing capacity (monitoring market demands), proved to be responsible for providing agility and market differentiation to the firm, which innovates in business models for sustainability.
