Leguminous shade trees are ubiquitous parts of tea plantations of the Terai region. However, their shed leaves might have an effect on the soil microflora under those shade trees, so it is important to find out how leaf litter affect the soil microflora. Isolation of soil microbial consortia followed by downstream experiments were conducted to observe the tolerance/susceptible pattern of those soil microflora against the fallen leaves. Sample from under Albizia odoratissima has higher organic carbon, organic matter and nitrogen content but the same property was found to be low in the sample collected under Melia azedarach. Isolation of consortia was done on nutrient agar. In vitro tolerance assay was conducted to find out the tolerance pattern against leaf extracts, heavy metal salts, pesticides, antibiotics and antifungals. Heavy metals salts like Arsenic trioxide (AS2O3) and Cupric chloride (CuCl2); and pesticides like Thiamethoxam; Spiromesifen; Phorate etc. showed no inhibition against all the isolated consortia. Co-Trimoxazole and Augmentin have not showed any inhibition except consortia under Derris robusta, whereas no antifungals but Itraconazole had an impact over all the consortia. Shade trees, being a crucial member of the tea plantations, cannot be removed but replacement of these with other species could be a probable option, besides this limited use of chemical pesticides and fertilizers should be taken into consideration strictly to restrain the microbial population in tea garden soil. So, this study has disclosed the acceptability of each and every shade tree used in this region.

Abstract Background The tea plant, Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze, is an evergreen leafy plant whose tender leaves are used in the manufacturing of the world’s second most consumed beverage—tea. The production and consumption of tea worldwide have continually increased over the decades. All parts of the plant—leaf, stem, root, flower and seed, are fed upon by insect pests. This study elucidates the metabolomic changes occurring in tea leaves in response to infestation by two major pests in tea gardens: red spider mites and tea mosquito bugs. These pests significantly impact both the quantity and quality of tea production. The secondary metabolites produced by the tea due to pest attack has been analysed using GC–MS analysis in the laboratory. Results Mostly fatty acid derivatives were biosynthesized as secondary metabolites due to pest attack as revealed from the result. In both infestations, methyl stearate was found to be produced along with increased chromatographic peaks of compounds such as caffeine, methyl palmitate, methyl linoleate, and stigmasta-7,25-dien-3-ol. In comparison with respective control samples (leaf with no pest attack), the one attacked by red spider mite showed eighteen exclusive metabolites, whereas tea mosquito bug infested leaf showed six such exclusive metabolites. Conclusions Some metabolites were found to be either increased or decreased in their amount in both the samples. The increased compounds were reported with insecticidal and pesticidal properties with respect to respective controls. Some metabolites were markers of pest attacks i.e. plant defense mechanism induced phytochemicals according to the literature as discussed in this research.

Abstract Tongba, chhyang, nigar and raksi are popular traditional drinks served in Nepal, northern and north eastern part of India and Tibetan plateau which are claimed as medicinal and considered as elements of high altitude ethnopharmacology. In this research, kodo (finger millet) based traditional beverages such as tongba, chhyang, nigar and raksi samples, collected from Singalila ridge of the Himalayas, were analysed through various qualitative and quantitative biochemical parameters. Total phenolic content (gallic acid equivalent) was estimated in a varied range from 936.26 ± 6.87 µg/mL (nigar) to 96.36 ± 1.22 µg/mL (chimphing raksi) while highest free fatty acid was measured in khokim raksi (2.11%). Antioxidant activity was evaluated using in vitro assays (DPPH assay, iodometric assay and in vitro anti-lipid peroxidation assay); antibacterial assay was conducted using well diffusion method. Tongba was found to be the most potential sample in antioxidant assays with a DPPH scavenging value of 85.31 ± 1.54% while nigar was the sample with most promising antibacterial activity. Furthermore, special emphasis was given on GC-MS based metabolite profiling and metabolomic elucidation. Responsible candidates detected by GC-MS analysis were discussed to correlate results of preliminary biochemical screenings and in vitro bioactivities. In vitro gastrointestinal digestion was carried out to figure out bioaccessibility of the bioactive groups of compounds in simulated human GI tract where DPPH assay, total phenol content and lipid composition (acid value) were considered as parameters. Most of the bioavailable bioactive antioxidants and phenolics were estimated to be decreased in the gastric phase reflecting the highest rate of digestion in the stomach while breakdown of lipid composition was dominated by the intestinal phase. Overall results suggest that antioxidative phenolics and fatty acids from these beverages possess bioactivities in their bioavailable form which may be associated to their ethnomedicinal properties. 2D nanosheets produced using liquid phase exfoliation method offers scalable and cost effective routes to optoelectronics devices. But this technique sometimes yields high defect, low stability, and compromised electronic properties. In this work, we employed an innovative approach that improved the existing liquid phase exfoliation method for fabricating MoS2/graphene heterostructure-based photodetector with enhanced optoelectronic properties. This technique involves hydrothermally treating MoS2 before dispersing it in a carefully chosen and environmentally friendly IPA/water solvent for ultrasonication exfoliation through an optomechanical approach. Thereafter, heterostructure nanosheets of MoS2 and graphene were formed through sequential deposition technique for the fabrication of vertical heterojunctions. Furthermore, we achieved a vertically stacked MoS2/graphene photodetector and a bare MoS2 photodetector. The MoS2/graphene hybrid nanosheets were characterized using spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. The results obtained show the size of the nanosheets is between 350 and 500 nm on average, and their thickness is less than or equal to 5 nm, and high crystallinity in the 2H semiconducting phase. The photocurrent, photoresponsivity, external quantum efficiency (EQE), and specific detectivity of MoS2/graphene heterostructure at 4 V bias voltage and 650 nm illumination wavelength were 3.55 μA, 39.44 mA/W, 7.54 %, and 2.02 × 1010 Jones, respectively, and that of MoS2 photodetector are 0.55 μA, 6.11 mA/W, 1.16 %, and 3.4 × 109 Jones. The results presented indicate that the photoresponse performances of the as-prepared MoS2/graphene were greatly improved (about 7-fold) compared to the photoresponse of the sole MoS2. Again, the MoS2/graphene heterostructure fabricated in this work show better optoelectronic characteristics as compared to the similar heterostructure prepared using the conventional solution processed method. The results provide a modest, inexpensive, and efficient method to fabricate heterojunctions with improved optoelectronic performance.

Abstract Recent experiments in magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene have revealed a wealth of novel electronic phases as a result of interaction-driven spin-valley flavour polarisation. In this work, we investigate correlated phases due to the combined effect of spin-orbit coupling-enhanced valley polarisation and the large density of states below half filling of the moiré band in twisted bilayer graphene coupled to tungsten diselenide. We observe an anomalous Hall effect, accompanied by a series of Lifshitz transitions that are highly tunable with carrier density and magnetic field. The magnetisation shows an abrupt change of sign near half-filling, confirming its orbital nature. While the Hall resistance is not quantised at zero magnetic fields—indicating a ground state with partial valley polarisation—perfect quantisation and complete valley polarisation are observed at finite fields. Our results illustrate that singularities in the flat bands in the presence of spin-orbit coupling can stabilise ordered phases even at non-integer moiré band fillings.

Background: Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze (tea) belongs to the family of Theaceae and is one of the most popular beverages. According to traditional Chinese medicine, its phytochemicals have the ability to cure various diseases of the liver, heart, spleen, and lungs. This study was done to explore the phytochemical potentiality of leaf extracts from different tea clones with special emphasis on their antioxidant, total phenol, flavonoid, and antibacterial activity. Methods: The leaves were extracted in methanol for various qualitative, and quantitative tests like antioxidant assay, total phenolic content, flavonoid content etc. Results: The result of this study delivers comparative data about the biochemical properties of various tea clones which will further help in future studies. Leaves extract of tea clones like TV-9, TV-26, CP-1 and Phoobsering-312 showed promising antioxidant activity. Leaves extract of TV-9, TV-23, TV-26 and CP-1 has shown an inhibitory effect on the growth of Gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli. Among the clones, Phoobsering-312 was found to be the most prominent tea clone as it exhibited total phenolic content, and antioxidant properties along with very significant antibacterial activity against Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis. Conclusion: This study showed the Darjeeling Garden clone (Phobsering-312) could be selected as an ideal clone for cultivation in the study area. This is to sustain the phytochemical quality of tea and gain health benefits, as the quality of manufactured tea is reflected in all aspects of the green harvest.

Oxidative burden plays a central role in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology, fostering protein aggregation, inflammation, mitochondrial impairment, and cellular dysfunction that collectively lead to neuronal injury. The role of exosomes in propagating the pathology of neurodegenerative diseases including AD is now well established. However, recent studies have also shown that exosomes are crucial responders to oxidative stress in different tissues. Thus, this offers new insights and mechanistic links within the complex pathogenesis of AD through the involvement of oxidative stress and exosomes. Several studies have indicated that exosomes, acting as intracellular communicators, disseminate oxidatively modified contents from one cell to another, propagating the pathology of AD. Another emerging aspect is the exosome-mediated inhibition of ferroptosis in multiple tissues under different conditions which may have a role in neurodegenerative diseases as well. Apart from their involvement in the pathogenesis of AD, exosomes enter the bloodstream serving as novel noninvasive biomarkers for AD; some of the exosome contents also reflect the cerebral oxidative stress in this disease condition. This review highlights the intricate interplay between oxidative stress and exosome dynamics and underscores the potential of exosomes as a novel tool in AD diagnosis.

In this paper, the proportional power sharing is focused through proposing a modified reverse droop control (RDC) scheme in a low-voltage (LV) islanded microgrid. The power is shared proportionally among parallel inverter-interfaced distributed energy resources (DERs) in an LV microgrid to distribute the change in the load based on their power capacity. The proposed control method shares real power inversely proportional in accordance with the real droop gain when the DERs have the same initial voltage values, while reactive power is also shared proportionally depending on reactive droop gains when different DERs’ rate-of-change of voltage angles (i.e. system frequency) are equal. The stability margins of the droop gains are analysed by dint of extended dynamic phasor model (DPM). An LV microgrid with inverter-interfaced DERs is demonstrated to run simulations during load impedance changing scenario. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed controller provides better response with lesser oscillations than the conventional reverse droop controller. Also, the performance of sharing power in an LV islanded microgrid is validated.

Abstract A novel wine has been developed from Camellia japonica’s petal by fermenting the decoction with Saccharomyces cerevisiae or brewer’s yeast. pH, brix, specific gravity and alcohol percentage were tested to study the physicochemical properties of the wine. Qualitative tests indicated presence of phenols such as flavonoids, coumarins; protein; glycosides; glycerin; terpenoids; steroids; and fatty acids in the wine. Total phenol content was found high in the decoction and in its fermented form as well. In vitro biological activities such as antioxidant activity, antidiabetic activity and lipid peroxidation inhibition power were assessed in samples. Furthermore, GC-MS analysis helped to detect volatiles present in the unfermented decoction and understand the effect of fermentation on its changing metabolome while column chromatography assisted the separation of solvent-based fractions. Notable outcomes from this study were detection of bioactive compound quinic acid in the decoction and a proposed pathway of its metabolic breakdown after fermentation. Results of this research revealed biochemical and physicochemical acceptability of this wine prepared from an underutilized flower. Graphical Abstract

Abstract Mediterranean diet (MD) can play a major role in decreasing the risks of non-communicable diseases and preventing overweight and obesity. In order for a person to follow the MD and assess their adherence to it, proper dietary assessment methods are required. We have developed an Artificial Intelligence-powered system that recognizes the food and drink items from a single meal photo and estimates their respective serving size, and integrated it into a smartphone application that automatically calculates MD adherence score and outputs a weekly feedback report. We compared the MD adherence score of four users as calculated by the system versus an expert dietitian, and the mean difference was 3.5% and statistically not significant. Afterwards, we conducted a feasibility study with 24 participants, to evaluate the system’s performance and to gather the users’ and dietitians’ feedback. The image recognition system achieved 61.8% mean Average Precision for the testing set and 57.3% for the feasibility study images (where the ground truth was taken as the participants’ annotations). The feedback from the participants of the feasibility study was also very positive.

Abstract Present study deals with molecular expression patterns responsible for post-harvest shelf-life extension of mulberry leaves. Quantitative profiling showed retention of primary metabolite and accumulation of stress markers in NS7 and CO7 respectively. The leaf mRNA profiles was sequenced using the Illumina platform to identify DEGs. A total of 3413 DEGs were identified between the treatments. Introduction: Small-for-gestational-age (SGA) is one of the important factors for neonatal mortality. Early identification and necessary intervention of these newborns is crucial to increase their chances of survival and reduce long-term disabilities. However, in low- and middle-income countries a large portion of pregnant women are unaware of their accurate gestational age (GA) due to the limited availability of ultrasonography. The purpose of our study was to build an alternative tool to identify SGA. Methods: A institutional-based, prospective observational study was conducted from August-2018 to February-2020, with 1451 live singleton-newborns of 30-40 weeks of gestation. Ultrasonography was used to evaluate accurate GA in early pregnancy and a reference chart for the Asian population, constructed by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) Fetal Growth Studies was used to classify newborns as SGA. Neonatal anthropometry was measured within 48 hours of birth. Receiver operating characteristic curves were developed to identify the best cut-off point for each anthropometric parameter and the area under the curve (AUC) was estimated to assess the overall precision. Results: Prevalence of SGA was 34.3%. The AUC was 0.888 for head circumference (HC), 0.890 for chest circumference (CC), and 0.865 for mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC). The optimal cut-offs to classify SGA were ≤32.45 cm for HC, ≤29.75 cm for CC and ≤8.55 cm for MUAC with sensitivities of 85.9%, 86.9% and 85.4%, specificities of 75.5%, 85.1% and 72.1%, positive predictive values of 0.64, 0.75 and 0.61 and negative predictive values of 0.91, 0.93 and 0.90 respectively. Conclusion: All three anthropometric measurements could be used to identify SGA but, overall CC is the best.

Abstract In this paper, a multi‐objective optimization technique is proposed for the planning of a networked microgrid based on peer‐to‐grid (P2G) and peer‐to‐peer (P2P) energy trading schemes. Two different criteria's including annual profit and energy index of reliability are taken into consideration to form a multi‐objective function. The networked microgrid consists of three individual microgrids containing their own combinations of generation resources, batteries and residential loads. All microgrids are connected together and also to the main grid to meet the energy exchange requirements of P2P energy trading. A cooperative game theory technique based on a particle swarm optimization algorithm is used to model the networked microgrid, and to find the suitable sizes of the players that simultaneously maximize the payoff values of both objective functions. Besides, a comparative analysis is carried out for both P2G and P2P energy trading schemes. The results show that the outcomes are maximum when both criteria are considered in the optimization and P2P energy trading is carried out. The sensitivity analysis is performed on the selected parameters and verified the right change 0.003% and 4.5% in discount rate and electricity prices, respectively.

Abstract This research work was designed to attempt and propose the first report on production and biochemical characterization of fermented tea flower petal decoction or simply tea petal wine. The tea petal decoction and brewer’s yeast or Saccharomyces cerevisiae were co-cultured for fermentation. Antioxidant activity and chromatographic separation of potential candidates were assessed. Primary investigations for qualitative characters on this fermented broth revealed the presence of steroids, tannin, flavonoids, phenol, cardiac glycosides, coumarin, caffeine etc. Our manufactured fermented broth showed high free radical scavenging activity after 2 months of aging. High DPPH scavenging activities were also observed in solvent fractions of acetone, ethanol and methanol. The antioxidant activity, alcohol percentage and other qualities were seen to be gradually increased during aging. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis revealed the presence of 44 compounds including many potential antioxidant molecules and other bioactive agents. Hopefully, presence of alcohol with medicinally active compounds and antioxidant activity will make it as acceptable as a good wine and tea flower as economically functional. Graphical abstract

Abstract Raksi, a fermented distilled alcoholic beverage, is an ethnic drink consumed in high altitude regions of Singalila Ridge of the Himalayas and in adjoining high altitude places in Nepal, northern and north eastern part of India and Tibetan plateau. Like jaanr, tongba, nigar, chhyang, and other fermented ethnic beverages, raksi is considered as an element of ethnopharmacology of high altitude with claims of medicinal properties. An ethnobiological survey was done in the study area prior to collection and identification of raksi samples. In this research, two raksi samples (khokim raksi and chimphing raksi) of Singalila Ridge of the Himalayas were investigated by metabolite profiling using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. Results of the experiment showed presence of several respiratory protective, cardioprotective, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant components which have properties to prevent various high altitude illnesses. Moreover, large quantities of bioactive terpenoids, fatty acid derivatives, coumarins, and peptides were detected whose chemotaxonomy and biosynthesis pathways were further studied. This metabolomics investigation not only affirmed Raksi as a remedy for high-altitude sickness but also helped in understanding the importance of this type of ethnic foods in high altitude ethnoecology. This research on raksi in the fields of ethnobiology and metabolomics is a cumulative approach which has opened the door for in-depth investigations on similar ethnic foods. However, further experiments on raksi are surely needed in ethnobiology, microbiology, biochemistry, and food technology.

Abstract Background Primary iliopsoas abscess is extremely rare in neonates and overlooked easily. It is potentially curable with surgical drainage and broad-spectrum antibiotics if diagnosed early. Case presentation A 13-day-old neonate was presented with a swelling and bluish discoloration on the left thigh and groin. There was a restriction of movement of the left lower limb, and he developed high grade fever later on, during hospital stay. In spite of a great dilemma, we could finally reach the diagnosis of primary iliopsoas abscess, performed surgical drainage, and controlled ongoing sepsis. At 3 months follow-up, the patient was doing well and there was no asymmetry in appearance of movements. Conclusion High index of suspicion, vigilant clinical examinations, and targeted laboratory investigations with imaging studies are of paramount importance in establishing its diagnosis. This case highlights the diagnostic difficulties and re-evaluates the representative features of neonatal iliopsoas abscess and its management.

Background: World Health Organization (WHO) declared vaccine-hesitancy (VH) as an emerging threat to global health. There are limited studies from developing countries, especially from Eastern India, addressing parental VH's determinants and its impact on childhood immunization. Current study aims to assess the prevalence of incomplete immunization in children and parental VH, explore the socio-demographic determinants, and delineate their interconnections. Material and methods: In this hospital-based, cross-sectional study vaccination cards or parents’ recall method were used to inquire about immunization status and the Likert-vaccine hesitancy scale (VHS) developed by WHO Strategic Advisory Group Experts on Immunization (SAGE) was utilized as an instrument to measure VH. Multivariate analyses were performed to identify the independent predictors. Results: The prevalence of incomplete immunization and VH were 18.9% and 41.6% respectively. Significant predictors of incomplete immunization were maternal education, socioeconomic status, gender, and place of delivery. Most responders believed vaccines are effective (99%), important for child's health (98%) and most vaccines offered by the government are beneficial (95%) but were also concerned about serious adverse effects (41%) and feared about new vaccines carrying more risk than old vaccines (16%). Maternal education and family type were significant determinants of VH. Incomplete immunization was significantly prevalent among children with vaccine-hesitant caregivers, though it was not found to be an independent predictor in multivariate analysis. Conclusions: This study emphasizes the magnitude of the issue of incomplete immunization, VH, and unravels its contributing factors which will help public-health care providers with a roadmap to prioritize resources and focus on preventable measures like health education, ensuring institutional births, and free health-service delivery expansion to increase immunization coverage. Caregivers’ VH is a major roadblock to attaining better immunization coverage which can be tackled through proper counselling to improve their health literacy.

Introduction. Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a common cause of cognitive impairment, behavioral changes and language deficits. in this study we assessed the clinical and FDG-PET characteristics of our patients and compared them with available international and Indian data on FTD. Methods. All patients were evaluated with a neuropsychological battery followed by 18F-FDG-PET scan, in addition to all necessary dementia work-up. Results. 15 FTD patients (m:f = 11:4) had a mean age of presentation of 67.4 (8.6) years, with a mean interval of 1.7 (0.7) years from the symptom onset to diagnosis. those with 10 or less years of education had an earlier presentation. a positive family history was present in 20%. The mean MMSE score was 18.8 (4.6). Disinhibition was the most common symptom seen in 60%. Apathy was less frequently noted. FDG-PET scan showed predominantly anterior cingulate and anterior temporal hypometabolism, with asymmetry in 67%. 2 cases diagnosed as fvAD had a revised diagnosis of bvFTD after FDG-PET scan. 1 patient of nfvPPA was mute at presentation with a history of agrammatism with hypometabolism in left inferior frontal and superior temporal regions. Conclusions. There were significant variations compared to international/Western literature, with later age of presentation, shorter interval from onset to presentation, lower MMSE scores, with disinhibition rather than apathy as the commonest symptom. FDG-PET showed similar areas of involvement but with less extensive hypometabolism compared to other studies with a lesser frequency of asymmetry. FDG-PET scan is a useful adjunct for evaluation of FTD patients.

In last couple of decades organisations are looking for solutions to reduce carbon emissions across their supply chains primarily due to stringent carbon policies. The two most familiar carbon policies are (i) Carbon tax/cost policy and (ii) Carbon cap-and-trade policy. In this paper a two-echelon supply chain have been optimised under these two policies under random demand. Comparisons of these two policies have been discussed, and a possible hybridisation of these two policies has also been presented. It has been assumed that the demand is random in nature. Two different Mixed Integer Non Linear Programming (MINLP) models have been developed and solved under the consideration of two different carbon policies. These models will help organisations to determine optimal order quantity, reorder point and number of shipments under most widely known carbon policies, severally. Sensitivity analyses have revealed that organisations can reduce total expected emissions and total expected cost by operational adjustments under both the carbon policies. It has been shown here that while optimising the total supply chain cost under the two different policies the decision variables and total emissions remain same. The advantages and disadvantages of both the policies have been discussed here and the potential benefits of a hybrid policy have also been presented.

Abstract Background The Himalaya hotspot, habitat to numerous indigenous species, harbours an endemic and endangered, cucurbit climber Herpetospermum darjeelingense (C.B.Clarke) H.Schaef. & S.S.Renner [Edgaria darjeelingensis C.B.Clarke]. Seeds of this plant have traditionally been used for ethno-veterinary treatment. The present probe aims to provide an insight into the antioxidant-related biochemical attributes of this phytochemically unexplored plant. Results DPPH scavenging activity of solvent extracts showed more potential towards the polar end with its maximum activity in methanolic extract (84.64%). Acetone extract showed more ferric reducing power than the ethanol fractions. Maximum flavonoid quantification was recorded in ethanol extract. GC–MS of methanolic extract detected 39 compounds of which 22 have preventive and curing properties for several ailments. Thirteen compounds were reported with antioxidant activity and cover an area of 63.92% among the total detected compounds by GC–MS. 1,3,4,5-Tetrahydroxy-cyclohexanecarboxylic acid; Hexadecanoic acid, methyl ester; ß sitosterol and Phytol are present in significant quantity and are the prime candidates conferring antioxidant potential. Chromatographically fractionalized methanol extract with non-polar to polar solvents and their subsequent DPPH scavenging analysis exhibited a major peak in ethanol fraction due to the presence of Phytol in considerable high quantity and some other compounds. Further sub-fractionation of ethanolic fraction provides a supportive evidence of ethanol solubility of the compounds. Biosynthetic lineage reveals fatty acid synthesis, intermediates of Shikimate pathway and terpenoid metabologenesis schemes lead to the several antioxidant molecules detected in our extract. Conclusion Metabolomics of antioxidants will provide a better understanding in its intracellular free radical quenching activity and isolation of these bioactive compounds can boost pharmaceutical industry.

The health and economic burden of colitis is increasing globally. Understanding the role of host genetics and metagenomics is essential to establish the molecular basis of colitis pathogenesis. In the present study, we have used a common composite dose of DSS to compare the differential disease severity response in C57BL/6 (Th1 biased) and BALB/c (Th2 biased) mice with zero mortality rates. We employed multi-omics approaches and developed a newer vector analysis approach to understand the molecular basis of the disease pathogenesis. The multi-omics approach also helped us discover some unique metabolic and microbial markers associated with the disease severity. These biomarkers could be used in diagnostics.

The health and economic burden of colitis is increasing globally. Understanding the role of host genetics and metagenomics is essential to establish the molecular basis of colitis pathogenesis. In the present study, we have used a common composite dose of DSS to compare the differential disease severity response in C57BL/6 (Th1 biased) and BALB/c (Th2 biased) mice with zero mortality rates. We employed multi-omics approaches and developed a newer vector analysis approach to understand the molecular basis of the disease pathogenesis. Abstract Background Metabolomics of Camellia japonica leaf has been studied to identify the terpenoids present in it and their interrelations regarding biosynthesis as most of their pathways are closely situated. Camellia japonica is famous for its anti-inflammatory activity in the field of medicines and ethno-botany. In this research, we intended to study the metabolomics of Camellia japonica leaf by using gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy technique. Results A total of twenty-nine anti-inflammatory compounds, occupying 83.96% of total area, came out in the result. Most of the metabolites are terpenoids leading with triterpenoids like squalene, lupeol, and vitamin E. In this study, the candidate molecules responsible for anti-inflammatory activity were spotted out in the leaf extract and biosynthetic relation or interactions between those components were also established. Conclusion Finding novel anticancer and anti-inflammatory medicinal compounds like lupeol in a large amount in Camellia japonica leaf is the most remarkable outcome of this gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy analysis. Developing probable pathway for biosynthesis of methyl commate B is also noteworthy.

Aim of the Study: The aim of this study is to assess the role of early feeding after elective colorectal surgery in children and compare the outcome of feeding practice early versus traditional feeding. Study Design: A randomized controlled, single-center study was conducted over a period of 3 years (November 2015–October 2018) at a tertiary care center. Materials and Methods: Patients (n = 147), after colostomy closure (as elective colorectal surgery), were randomly selected for postoperative feeding initiation and were divided into two groups, namely the control (traditional feeding) group and study group (early feeding). In early group, feeding was initiated on the postoperative day 1 after the removal of nasogastric tube (removed after 16 h of surgery). Postoperative hospital stay and complications were compared among them. Statistical Analysis Used: Data were tabulated and analyzed in Microsoft Excel 2010. Results: Among 147 patients (boys[70] and girls [77]), the average age of colostomy closure was 4.36 years. Forty-five patients had early feeding and 102 traditional feeding. Average postoperative hospital stay was noted 5.62 ± 1.11 days for “Study group” and 8.1 ± 1.04 days for “Control group.” Postoperative complications were found in 17 patients; 11 (7.5%) superficial surgical site infection (9 [8.8%] in control and 2 [4.4%] in study group) and 6 (4%) minor fecal fistulae (5 [4.9%] in control group and 1 [2.2%] in study group). None required any further surgical intervention. No mortality was reported. Conclusions: Early feeding initiation after elective colorectal surgery is safe, and postoperative hospital stay is significantly reduced. It is definitely a step forward in the era of fast track surgery in pediatric population.

To capture lapses in management, active surveillance of pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admissions should consider as an essential tool to bring a better outcome with available resources, while there is a scarcity of data from comparatively newly set up peripheral PICU in developing countries. An observational record-based cross-sectional study was conducted in a peripheral medical college PICU over one year to evaluate morbidity pattern, outcome, and predictors of mortality. Binomial logistic regression (SPSS version-25) was used for analysis. The confidence interval (CI) of Odd’s ratio was used to report the strength of association between dependent and independent variables. Pneumonia was the major cause of admission (27%), followed by septicemia (25.5%), congenital heart diseases (12.2%), bronchiolitis (6.6%), seizure disorders (8.6%), encephalitis (5%), and meningitis (4%). 51.7% were discharged, 14.6 %were referred, 3.2% were left against medical advice, and 30.4% were expired. Pneumonia (46.44%) was the most common cause of death, followed by sepsis (42.07%), congenital heart disease (15.3%), and bronchiolitis (6.01%). The mean duration of stay in PICU was five days (range 1-31 days). Patients who required ventilation (40%) or Inotropes (55.6%) had increased risk of mortality by 14 and 8 times, respectively. Pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) have been observed to occur in two distinct states — naive and primed. Both naive and primed state PSCs can give rise to tissues of all the three germ layers in vitro but differ in their potential to generate germline chimera in vivo. Understanding the molecular mechanisms that govern these two states of pluripotency in human can open a plethora of opportunities for studying early embryonic development and in biomedical applications. In this work, we use weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) to identify the key molecular makers and their interactions that define the two distinct pluripotency states. Signed hybrid network was reconstructed from transcriptomic data (RNA-seq) of naive and primed state pluripotent samples. Our analysis revealed two sets of genes that are involved in the establishment and maintenance of naive and primed states. The naive state genes were found to be enriched for biological processes and pathways related to metabolic processes while primed state genes were associated with system development. We further filtered these lists to identify the intra-modular hubs and the hub transcription factors (TFs) for each group. Validation of the identified TFs was carried out using independent microarray datasets and we finally present a list of 52 and 33 TFs as the set of core TFs that are responsible for the induction and maintenance of naive and primed states of pluripotency in human, respectively. Multi-agent-based smart grid applications have gained much attention in recent times. At the same time, information and communication technology (ICT) has become a crucial part of the smart grid infrastructure. The key intention of this work is to present a comprehensive review of the literature and technological frameworks for the application of multi-agent system (MAS) and ICT infrastructure usages in smart grid implementations. In the smart grid, agents are defined as intelligent entities with the ability to take decisions and acting flexibly and autonomously according to their built-in intelligence utilizing previous experiences. Whereas, ICT enables conventional grid turned into the smart grid through data and information exchange. This paper summarizes the multi-agent concept of smart grid highlighting their applications through a detailed and extensive literature survey on the related topics. In addition to the above, a particular focus has been put on the ICT standards, including IEC 61850 incorporating ICT with MAS. Finally, a laboratory framework concepts have been added highlighting the implementation of IEC 61850.

All around the world, tea is one of the most popularly consumed non-alcoholic beverages. Tea is a shade loving shrub. However, how the tea metabolites get changed under shade versus unshade condition and also under shade-pesticide treatment versus unshade-pesticide treatment condition have not been determined and reported yet. So, a metabolomics approach was applied to investigate the shade and pesticide treatment condition of the first flushes of Camellia sinensis L. A GC/MS-based metabolomics approach was established encompassing a homogeneous experimental setup for growth, treatment and sampling of tea leaves and their subsequent data analysis using statistical and chemometric tool. A total of 90 metabolites have been identified and semi-quantified. The chemometric analysis elucidates the changes in important metabolites under shade and unshade conditions and also the effect of thiamethoxam on metabolite profile and their responses on tea bushes from shade and unshade conditions. The antioxidant activity and total antioxidant capacity were also assessed and showed a significant change in activity after pesticide treatment both under shade–unshade conditions. Increase in phenols, amino acids, organic acids, sugar alcohols concentrations when plants exposed to shade than unshade treatment was reported. The results suggest that during pesticide treatment on shaded tea plants there is decrease in many important metabolites (phenolics and organic acids), which impart the major flavor, taste, aroma, and quality of the beverage. The increase in amino acids cope the plants to protect them from chemical pesticide treatments under shade conditions.

The transfer of charge carriers across the optically excited hetero-interface of graphene and semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) is the key to convert light to electricity, although the intermediate steps from the creation of excitons in TMDC to the collection of free carriers in the graphene layer are not fully understood. Here, we investigate photo-induced charge transport across graphene–MoS2 and graphene–WSe2 hetero-interfaces using time-dependent photoresistance relaxation with varying temperature, wavelength, and gate voltage. In both types of heterostructures, we observe an unprecedented resonance in the inter-layer charge transfer rate as the Fermi energy (EF) of the graphene layer is tuned externally with a global back gate. We attribute this to a resonant quantum tunneling from the excitonic state of the TMDC to EF of the graphene layer and outline a new method to estimate the excitonic binding energies (Eb) in the TMDCs, which are found to be 400 meV and 460 meV in MoS2 and WSe2 layers, respectively. The gate tunability of the inter-layer charge transfer timescales may allow precise engineering and readout of the optically excited electronic states at graphene–TMDC interfaces.

We describe a rare haematological complication of pulmonary thromboembolism in a scrub typhus infection. There are very few case reports on scrub typhus infection causing deep venous thrombosis. Vasculitis and perivasculitis with endothelial dysfunction could be considered as the main pathologic mechanism causing this complication.

The weak interlayer coupling in van der Waals solids allows isolation of individual atomic or molecular layers with remarkable electrical, optical, and structural properties. The applicability of these two dimensional materials in future electronic architectures requires a thorough understanding of the electrical transport mechanisms as well as of the factors limiting the device performance. The study of slow time-varying fluctuations in resistance, often called the 1 / f noise, offers deep insight into the electronic transport and scattering mechanisms, and also acts as a performance benchmark. Here we review the current status on the magnitude and microscopic understanding of low-frequency 1 / f noise in two-dimensional electronic materials, with specific focus on graphene, bismuth chalcogenides, and transition metal dichalcogenides. The noise characteristics differ significantly among these systems, and are directly influenced by the band structure, energy dispersion, and screening properties. The noise in field effect devices from van der Waals materials closely compares with or is even lower than that of conduction channels in conventional electronics. The excellent noise performance, when combined with high carrier mobility, energy efficiency and structural flexibility, renders an excellent platform for future electronic, optoelectronic, and sensor applications.

To meet the fast-growing energy demand and, at the same time, tackle environmental concerns resulting from conventional energy sources, renewable energy sources are getting integrated in power networks to ensure reliable and affordable energy for the public and industrial sectors. However, the integration of renewable energy in the ageing electrical grids can result in new risks/challenges, such as security of supply, base load energy capacity, seasonal effects, and so on. Recent research and development in microgrids have proved that microgrids, which are fueled by renewable energy sources and managed by smart grids (use of smart sensors and smart energy management system), can offer higher reliability and more efficient energy systems in a cost-effective manner. Further improvement in the reliability and efficiency of electrical grids can be achieved by utilizing dc distribution in microgrid systems. DC microgrid is an attractive technology in the modern electrical grid system because of its natural interface with renewable energy sources, electric loads, and energy storage systems. In the recent past, an increase in research work has been observed in the area of dc microgrid, which brings this technology closer to practical implementation. This paper presents the state-of-the-art dc microgrid technology that covers ac interfaces, architectures, possible grounding schemes, power quality issues, and communication systems. The advantages of dc grids can be harvested in many applications to improve their reliability and efficiency. This paper also discusses benefits and challenges of using dc grid systems in several applications. This paper highlights the urgent need of standardizations for dc microgrid technology and presents recent updates in this area.

An LCL filter utilized in an active front end (AFE) converter can generate significant resonance, which can affect quality and stability of the system. Thus, a proper active or passive damping technique and/or a suitable controller is required to be designed for the converter. The duty cycle constraint-though inevitable in practical inverter systems-is often ignored in most of the existing literature. The effects of measurement noise on filter control system performance must be considered and evaluated under different conditions. Finally, almost all inverter control systems are implemented digitally using microcontrollers. Consequently, the effects of sampling on control system stability and performance should be evaluated as well. Thus, this paper presents stability analysis of an AFE converter-based filter design with a complete practical system configuration, including saturation and sampling blocks and measurement noises. Mathematical analysis and simulations have been carried out to validate the proposed method.

The new era of power semiconductor devices is exploiting the high potential of wide bandgap device-based high-frequency power converters. The advanced capabilities of Silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors allow the power converters to switch at higher switching frequencies with lower switching and conduction losses. Operation under higher switching frequencies can drastically reduce the output filter requirements in grid-connected converters. At higher frequencies, an L-type filter can sufficiently eliminate the switching frequency harmonics. This will reduce the size and cost of the filter, which eventually results in the optimised system cost. In this paper, the filter requirements of SiC based high-frequency converters are investigated. Usage of LCL filters to remove high-frequency harmonic will shift the resonance frequency to high-frequency region, where these harmonics can create electromagnetic compatibility issues. In industries, passive damping is utilised for mitigating these oscillations. This will result in additional losses and compromise the advantages of SiC devices. Even though active damping can be utilised to eliminate resonance oscillations, the high bandwidth processors and measurement devices may increase the cost further. Simulation study is conducted on PSCAD/MATLAB and the experimental verification using Cree SiC devices verify the filter requirements, stability issues, and possible mitigating solutions for high-frequency grid converters.

BACKGROUND: The study aims to record the perceptions of medical faculties regarding the effectiveness of theory-based examination to assess the newly introduced competencies of attitude ethics and communication (AETCOM) in the competency-based medical curriculum for Indian medical graduates. MATERIALS And METHODS: This is an analytical cross-sectional study performed on the month of February 2020 where a prevalidated questionnaire consisting of components of AETCOM was e-mailed to the teaching faculties of IQ City Medical College via Google Forms. Consenting faculties responded. Their results were analyzed by inbuilt Google statistics and were cross-verified with SPSS 20.0. RESULTS: Sixty percent faculties strongly agree regarding the beneficial role of mandatory inclusion of AETCOM competencies in competency-based medical education. About 61.66% of faculties strongly agree that both formative assessment and summative assessment of AETCOM are essential. Although 48.33% of faculties believed that theoretical questions can be used to assess AETCOM, 51.66% of faculties do not agree that theory examination serves as an effective tool to assess AETCOM. They believe that AETCOM cannot be written on paper and attitude can change in reality when facing a real-world clinical scenario in contrast to what is written in answer script during creative writing. CONCLUSIONS: Assessment of AETCOM is essential and it should be preferably done via a practical approach in a real-world simulated scenario and not by written theoretical examination.

The Mediterranean diet (MD) is regarded as a healthy eating pattern with beneficial effects both for the decrease of the risk for non-communicable diseases and also for body weight reduction. In the current manuscript, we propose an automated smartphone application which monitors and evaluates the user’s adherence to MD using images of the food and drinks that they consume. We define a set of rules for automatic adherence estimation, which focuses on the main MD food groups. We use a combination of a convolutional neural network (CNN) and a graph convolutional network to detect the types of foods and quantities from the users’ food images and the defined set of rules to evaluate the adherence to MD. Our experiments show that our system outperforms a basic CNN in terms of recognizing food items and estimating quantity and yields comparable results as experienced dietitians when it comes to overall MD adherence estimation. As the system is novel, these results are promising; however, there is room for improvement of the accuracy by gathering and training with more data and certain refinements can be performed such as re-defining the set of rules to also be able to be used for sub-groups of MD (e.g., vegetarian type of MD).

One of the unique features of Dirac Fermions is pseudodiffusive transport by evanescent modes at low Fermi energies when disorder is low. At higher Fermi energies, i.e., charge carrier densities, the electrical transport is diffusive in nature and the propagation occurs via plane waves. In this study, we report the detection of such evanescent modes in the surface states of topological insulator through 1/f noise for the first time. While signatures of pseudodiffusive transport have been seen experimentally in graphene, such behavior is yet to be observed explicitly in any other system with a Dirac dispersion. To probe this, we have studied 1/f noise in topological insulators as a function of gate voltage, and temperature. Our results show a nonmonotonic behavior in 1/f noise as the gate voltage is varied, suggesting a crossover from pseudodiffusive to diffusive transport regime in mesoscopic topological insulators. The temperature dependence of noise points towards conductance fluctuations from quantum interference as the dominant source of the noise in these samples.

The diverse properties of two-dimensional materials have been utilized in a variety of architecture to fabricate high quality electronic circuit elements. Here we demonstrate a generic method to control hysteresis and stable memory effect in Van der Waals hybrids with a floating gate as the base layer. The floating gate can be charged with a global back gate-voltage, which it can retain in a stable manner. Such devices can provide a very high, leakage-free effective gate-voltage on the field-effect transistors due to effective capacitance amplification, which also leads to reduced input power requirements on electronic devices. The capacitance amplification factor of ∼10 can be further enhanced by increasing the area of the floating gate. We have exploited this method to achieve highly durable memory action multiple genre of ultra-thin 2D channels, including graphene, MoS _2 , and topological insulators at room temperature.

In this paper, two techniques of game theory are considered for sizing and comparative analysis of a grid-connected networked microgrid, based on a multi-objective imperialistic competition algorithm (ICA) for system optimization. The selected networked microgrid, which consists of two different grid-connected microgrids with common electrical load and main grid, might have different combinations of generation resources including wind turbine, photovoltaic panels, and batteries. The game theory technique of Nash equilibrium is developed to perform the effective sizing of the networked microgrid in which capacities of the generation resources and batteries are considered as players and annual profit as payoff. In order to meet the equilibrium point and the optimum sizes of generation resources, all possible coalitions between the players are considered; ICA, which is frequently used in optimization applications, is implemented using MATLAB software. Both techniques of game theory, Shapley values and Nash equilibrium, are used to find the annual profit of each microgrid, and results are compared based on optimum sizing, and maximum values of annual profit are identified. Finally, in order to validate the results of the networked microgrid, the sensitivity analysis is studied to examine the impact of electricity price and discount rates on maximum values of profit for both game theory techniques.

Due to its efficiency, reliability and better channel and resource utilization, cooperative transmission technologies have been attractive options in underwater as well as terrestrial sensor networks. Their performance can be further improved if merged with forward error correction (FEC) techniques. In this paper, we propose and analyze a retransmission protocol named Cooperative-Hybrid Automatic Repeat reQuest (C-HARQ) for underwater acoustic sensor networks, which exploits both the reliability of cooperative ARQ (CARQ) and the efficiency of incremental redundancy-hybrid ARQ (IR-HARQ) using rate-compatible punctured convolution (RCPC) codes. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations are performed to investigate the performance of the protocol, in terms of both throughput and energy efficiency. The results clearly reveal the enhancement in performance achieved by the C-HARQ protocol, which outperforms both CARQ and conventional stop and wait ARQ (S&W ARQ). Further, using computer simulations, optimum values of various network parameters are estimated so as to extract the best performance out of the C-HARQ protocol.

Background: Methodical and meticulous understanding of clinico-pathological procedures and decision making process of cancer diagnosis and identification of aspects that are well-suited for computer-aided analysis are first steps toward development of assistive computational tool for analysis of breast fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) slides. Aims: To identify variables in practice of FNAC as used for diagnosis of breast lesions and commonly perceived diagnostic significance of cytological features for diagnosis of benign or malignant condition of breast lesions. Materials and Methods: An India-wide questionnaire-based survey of cytopathologists/pathologists′ breast FNAC reporting practices and their opinion on diagnostic significance of cytological features in diagnosis of benign or malignant nature of breast lesion were conducted. Results: Fifty-one experts working with various medical education institutes (~52% of participants), oncological tertiary care centers (~28%) and primary care centers/private diagnostic pathology laboratories (~20%) spread over 13 states of India have participated in the survey. Constants and variables observed in clinico-cytopathological practices and combined opinion of the participants on diagnostic significance of cytological features are presented here. Conclusions: There exist analogous as well as varied components in clinico-pathological procedures and diagnostic interpretation by individuals. These constants and variables in the practice of breast FNAC should be considered, when drawing up specifications for an assistive computational tool for analysis of breast FNAC slides. The estimate for commonly perceived significance of cytological features obtained through this study will help in their selection for computer-aided analysis of breast FNAC slides and further in selection of corresponding feature quantification techniques.

OBJECTIVES/SPECIFIC AIMS: Epidemiologic data suggest that BV is sexually transmitted with male partners colonized or infected with the responsible organism(s). The objective of this study was to compare the genital microbiota of women with recurrent BV and their regular male sexual partner using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and quantitative PCR targeting BV-candidate bacteria (Gardnerella vaginalis, Atopobium vaginae, BVAB1-3, Sneathia, Leptotrichia, and Megasphaera type I). METHODS/STUDY POPULATION: Women with recurrent BV (≥3 prior episodes, including a current episode) and their regular male partner participating in a BV treatment trial and providing genital specimens (women: vaginal; men: urethral, coronal sulcus, urine) at enrollment were included. Male specimens for each participant were pooled. 250 bp 16S rRNA V4 region PCR amplicons were sequenced and analyzed using the QIIME pipeline. Taxonomy was assigned using the RDP Classifier against a modified Greengenes database with additional vaginal taxonomies added. An average relative abundance cutoff of 0.5% was used for analysis. qPCR was also performed for specific BV-candidate bacteria. Spearman correlation coefficients were used to investigate associations between all genital bacteria in addition to BV-candidate bacteria between partnerships. To determine positive associations between partnerships, the Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used. RESULTS/ANTICIPATED RESULTS: In total, 45 partnerships were included. Mean partnership age was 31.3 (SD=7.9), 91.1% partnerships were African-American. The majority of partnerships (70.0%) reported condomless sex during the past 3 months. Regarding 16S data, 37 genital bacteria had an average relative abundance of ≥0.5%. The average Spearman correlation across all 45 partnerships was 0.28 (SD=0.27) (median=0.27, minimum=−0.21, maximum=0.84). The room temperature operating resistive ammonia gas sensor is designed by using an upright-standing ZnO nano-sheets. Wet chemical route is preferred for growing ZnO upright-standing free nano-sheets of ~2-5 μm in length and ~100-150 nm in width. Structural, surface morphological and room temperature ammonium sensing properties of these nano-plates are elucidated. Well-resolved nano-sheets when kept in ammonium container showing good sensing behavior. Ammonia gas sensor response measured room temperature (300 K) is the function of gas concentration.

We report measurement of low frequency 1/f noise in molybdenum di-sulphide (MoS2) field-effect transistors in multiple device configurations including MoS2 on silicon dioxide as well as MoS2-hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) heterostructures. All as-fabricated devices show similar magnitude of noise with number fluctuation as the dominant mechanism at high temperatures and density, although the calculated density of traps is two orders of magnitude higher than that at the SiO2 interface. Measurements on the heterostructure devices with vacuum annealing and dual gated configuration reveals that along with the channel, metal-MoS2 contacts also play a significant role in determining noise magnitude in these devices.

The role of inflammation being minimal in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in nonobese patients; the aim of the study was to investigate the role of adenosine deaminase (ADA) and see its association with diabetes mellitus. The preliminary case control study comprised of 56 cases and 45 healthy controls which were age and sex matched. 3 mL venous blood samples were obtained from the patients as well as controls after 8–10 hours of fasting. Serum ADA and routine biochemical parameters were analyzed. Serum ADA level was found significantly higher among nonobese T2DM subjects with respect to controls (38.77±14.29 versus 17.02±5.74 U/L; P
