This paper introduces a new framework for the organization of electronic books (e-books) and their corresponding authors using a multilayer self-organizing map (MLSOM). An author is modeled by a rich tree-structured representation, and an MLSOM-based system is used as an efficient solution to the organizational problem of structured data. The tree-structured representation formulates author features in a hierarchy of author biography, books, pages, and paragraphs. To efficiently tackle the tree-structured representation, we used an MLSOM algorithm that serves as a clustering technique to handle e-books and their corresponding authors. A book and author recommender system is then implemented using the proposed framework. The effectiveness of our approach was examined in a large-scale data set containing 3868 authors along with the 10500 e-books that they wrote. We also provided visualization results of MLSOM for revealing the relevance patterns hidden from presented author clusters. The experimental results corroborate that the proposed method outperforms other content-based models (e.g., rate adapting poisson, latent Dirichlet allocation, probabilistic latent semantic indexing, and so on) and offers a promising solution to book recommendation, author recommendation, and visualization. Richard Doherty, principal analyst at Envisioneering, says that if Apple iPads can give 10 hours of battery life it can solve the disadvantages of electrophoretic displays.

Abstract: It is still an open question where to search for complying a specific information need due to the large amount and diversity of information available. In this paper, a content analysis of health-related information provided in the Web is performed to get an overview on the medical content available. In particular, the content of medical Question & Answer Portals, medical weblogs, medical reviews and Wikis is compared. For this purpose, medical concepts are extracted from the text material with existing extraction technology. Based on these concepts, the content of the different knowledge resources is compared. Since medical weblogs describe experiences as well as information, it is of large interest to be able to distinguish between informative and affective posts. For this reason, a method to classify blogs based on their information content is presented, which exploits high-level features describing the medical and affective content of blog posts. The results show that there are substantial differences in the content of various health-related Web resources. Weblogs and answer portals mainly deal with diseases and medications. The Wiki and the encyclopedia provide more information on anatomy and procedures. While patients and nurses describe personal aspects of their life, doctors aim to present health-related information in their blog posts. The knowledge on content differences and information content can be exploited by search engines to improve ranking, search and to direct users to appropriate knowledge sources. The article examines the factors that contribute to the growth of online books. In the traditional book industry, authors never get the authority over publishing. But with introduction of online books, authors may have the chance to get back some control. Several publishers announcing their interest indicate that online book is reaching critical mass. Books published on paper can also be digitized, which means more income for authors because most digital rights in force give them 50 percent of the publisher's proceed.

This paper lists several electronic books on library technology. In "Beyond Print: Reading Digitally," the author, Gary J. Brown suggests that the availability of digital texts will change how people read and urges producers to alter their approach to electronic books. Vivian Lewis' "E-books After the Fall" provides a good overview of electronic book history with a discussion of what is needed now for successful implementation, both on the publisher and the library side. "I, User - The eBook Prospectus: 2004," by Rich Lugg and Ruth Fischer is a review of what's new in online and offline e-books technology and in solutions for integrating e-books into acquisition processes. Ann Bristow's "Acquiring Reference Tools: Some Thoughts on Current Issues" reviews the state of reference e-publishing and note the metamorphosis of print reference books into subscription-based online databases that are less easy to accommodate in limited budgets.

This paper describes the libraries devotion of their resources to access management. When libraries began buying electronic resources, they joined publishers and information scientists on the technology train, an express that generates its own momentum. First, libraries bought current subscriptions to electronic journals. Libraries also have been willing to buy expensive products even though they are seriously flawed. One of the most basic impacts of electronic publishing has been the stimulation of the belief that libraries must transform themselves and take on new roles. A few years ago library leaders talked about the challenges of maintaining the hybrid print/digital library. The balance has shifted perceptibly to the idea that the good library is the electronic library.

The article presents a review of the changing image of the periodical "Computing Surveys." During the last 2 years, Computing Surveys has introduced short, 2-page papers to complement the long 30- to 50- page traditional papers. Association of Computing Machinery (ACM)'s 50th anniversary year was commemorated with two special issues, one on perspectives in computing (March, 1996), examining current technology and one on strategic directions in computing (December, 1996) looking towards the future. The December, 1996 issue of the periodical demonstrates the feasibility of joint hard copy/electronic publication. It is economically feasible to publish a 1000-page special issue of which about 300 pages appear in hard copy and the remainder electronically. The ACM electronic repository in www.acm.org will increasingly supplement its hard-copy publications with electronic value. One of the side effects of short articles is to make "Computing Surveys" more participatory. Another participatory activity designed to recognize student talent is the ACM student paper competition.

The editorial board of the new journal "Transactions on Design Automation of Electronic Systems" (TODAES) of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) is inviting submissions of technical papers. C. L. Liu of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is the editor-in-chief of TODAES. Papers should address recent results of research and/or development in the specification, design, analysis, simulation, testing, and evaluation of very large-scale integrated electronic systems, emphasizing a computer science/engineering orientation. TODAES will also publish tutorial and survey papers and short technical notes. Publication begins in January 1996. This article presents profiles and statements of two candidates for the post of Vice-President of Association of Computing Machinery. The two candidates are Norman Gibbs and Mary Jane Irwin. Gibbs earned his bachelor's degree in mathematics from Ursinus College and his master's and doctorate degrees in computer science from Purdue University. He has been a member of several national advisory committees, an active consultant and published over 30 refereed papers and three books. According to him, it is not realistic to believe that an ACM vice-president will be able to make many changes in direction in a two year period. Investing in the future leadership will be a priority for him. Irwin did her B.S. in mathematics with honors from Memphis State University and Ph.D. in computer science from University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. According to her, ACM must focus on issues important to society such as in helping to define the future information infrastructure. The success of several ACM initiatives such as Network Services and the Electronic publishing program depend on this infrastructure. ACM needs strong, experienced leadership.

The article presents an overview of open access (OA) and explains key issues relating to unrestricted online access to scholarly publications. It discusses the creation of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA) in late 2008, and professors Robin Peek and Peter Suber's launch of an Open Access Directory wiki in April 2008. It considers the issue of how much it should cost to publish scholarly papers, and distinguishes Gratis OA with Libre OA.

The article focuses on the popularity and viability of electronic books in libraries. A technology with great potential can suffer from poor implementation or ineffective marketing, while one with less promise can succeed for a short time due to brilliant marketing that masks the product's limitations. Predicting the success or failure of any new technology is difficult. Reading a book on a computer screen or personal digital assistant is not as comfortable as reading a printed book. Electronic ink is ideally suited for Electronic Paper Displays as it is a reflective technology which requires no front or backlight, is viewable under a wide range of lighting conditions, including direct sunlight and requires no power to maintain an image.

The present article focuses on belief that electronic books would end all printed books. The so called "book of the future," developed by researchers, will not be on a disk or a monitor but instead "printed" on bound leafable pages, with a memory to hold a number of different titles. It is a futuristic vision of a book composed of electronic ink, or e-ink, which can be applied to the page within instead of by a press. E-ink consists of microscopic spheres, each about 40 microns in diameter, that together form characters on a page. Each sphere is half black and half white, applied by the millions to paper and then flipped over electronically to either side to produce what looks like a traditional printed page. A reader would select a title displayed on the book's binding, and circuits in the spine would activate transparent electrodes in each page. Ideally, public-domain text could be downloaded from the Internet and the daily news could be accessed through newspaper companies.

The article presents views of Joseph Halpern, who was appointed Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the ACM (JACM) in March, 1997. Halpern is concerned about a growing parochialism among computer scientists, especially at a time when it seems that many of the most exciting advances will come from interdisciplinary work. Halpern recognized the impact of the web on scholarly publishing but believes that with the glut of information available, the need grows even stronger for authoritative, high-quality, refereed papers. Halpern notes that ACM journals continue to be very reasonably priced at a time when most journal prices are increasing rapidly while library budgets are barely keeping up with inflation. Halpern is presently a Professor at the Cornell University Computer Science Department. This article presents biographies and statements of Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) candidates for Central Region Representative. Lee J.White has been a full member of ACM since 1969. White is a author of over 50 refereed technical papers. White suggests the increased scheduling of joint conferences, symposia and workshops in ACM. This will allow the travel dollar of members to go further, attending several collocated events of interest. David S.Wise attended Carnegie Institute of Technology (B.S. 1967) and the University of Wisconsin (M.S. 1969 and Ph.D. 1971). Within ACM Professor Wise is a member of Special Interest Group (SIG) Board, Publications Board, the Executive Committee of USACM. According to Wise, ACM must lead in launching on-line products, while still sustaining the respect that the ACM imprimatur has earned. As a federation of semi-autonomous local chapters and SIGs, whose liveliness stems from localized management, ACM must shape its global future from local spirit.

Major newspaper publishers, including, Gannett, Knight-Ridder, and Times-Mirror, recently announced the creation of a research consortium to explore new ways to use computers and telecommunications to deliver news, as of July 1, 1993. Ideas include electronic newspapers transmitted to pocket-size wireless computers or personalized papers printed at home.

That day, Microsoft released Windows Millennium Edition, its most forgettable operating system. It was also the day I posted the entry p-book to my Word Spy site, along with the following prognostication: "Within a few years, using the word 'book' without any kind of modifier will be confusing because people won't know if you?re talking about a book printed on paper or one that's printed on electrons (so to speak). So I predict that 'p-book'...will become a common noun that will help us distinguish between the paper and electronic formats." · For a while it looked like I couldn't have been more wrong. The number of citations for "p-book" (as well as "pbook") in the Nexis media database went from 20 in 2000 and 19 in 2001 to just 1 in 2003 and 2 in 2004. But as e?books have become more popular, the word p-book has been showing renewed signs of life, with 20 citations in 2010, 24 in 2011, and 28 in 2012. · Language prediction is a mug's game, but it's certain that digital books (as opposed to printed analog books) are here to stay. Sales of e-books (also known as ebooks or eBooks; there is much hand-wringing in the industry over the correct spelling) have slowed down recently, but they remain the fastest growing (or, for some companies, the only growing) segment of the publishing industry. The article presents an interview with Michael Eisen, a computational biologist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, about the launch of three new open access scientific journals under his initiative Public Library of Science. According to Eisen, 95 percent of research papers in the life sciences are still locked up by the big commercial publishers--Elsevier, Springer and the rest. The reason why research libraries pay for subscriptions is for starters, if reseearch were freely available, people would build better tools to sift through and dig things out. In the first issue of the journal, The Lancet, Elsevier's prime medical journal--there was an editorial stating that the aim of the publication was to communicate the findings of science to the widest possible audience. Somewhere along the line, they became a business and lost touch with why they exist. Eisen explains that scientific publishing is a $10 billion global business, growing 10 percent a year. They are not going to let go without a fight. The Association of American Publishers has hired former Congressperson Pat Schroeder as its president and chief lobbyist--the queen of darkness. They went up to Capitol Hill and said we were socializing scientific publishing. Their argument is ludicrous. What we have now is an egregiously subsidized industry--they are given content for free and then paid tremendous amounts of money to process and distribute it. Peer reviewers mostly are not compensated. In a lot of fields, even the people who oversee the peer-review process are volunteers. And of course, the research that went into the papers is already paid for. And then the publishers have the gall to insist that they own a copyright on the results.

"e-PRESERVATIONScience" is a new European online journal of papers, announcements, and news about materials research in 2004. It intends to speed the dissemination of information about a broad range of preservation and conservation science by publishing articles within eight weeks of submission. The e-journal is available free-of-charge at www.e-preservationscience.org. Subscriptions to a paper version cost 250 Euros per year and are available for the publisher, Morana RTD.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) has announced an update to the IEEE Xplore online interface, Xplore 1.6, which uses the K2 search technology from Verity, Inc. The update includes new search tools and cover-to-cover editorial materials. Search terms are highlighted in all search results, and secondary searches may be conducted within the results of primary searches. A subscription icon identifies the papers to which subscribers already have full-text access. Beginning with content published in 2004, Xplore will include cover-to-cover material from select periodicals. Users will see link from tables of contents to items, such as letters to the editor, editorial board listings, and calls for papers.
