The article explores the early European history of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Emphasis is given to topics such as the arrival of Portuguese forces under the command of officer Martim Afonso de Sousa in Guanabara Bay in 1530, relations between French traders and the Tupinambá people, the establishment of a French colony by soldier Nicolas de Villegagnon, and victory over the French by Portuguese forces under the command of governor-general Mem de Sá and his cousin Estácio de Sá.
