An article discussing the role of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) within the geopolitical intelligence community is presented. Citing an interview with former Director General of the IAEA Mohamed ElBaradei, the author examines possible problems with the intelligence gathering and data analysis capabilities and explains why use of spies and underground intelligence officers by the IAEA would not be a practical information collection method. The impact of North-South political division within the United Nations (UN) and the roles of the UN and IAEA in preventing illegal nuclear proliferation are also included.
