The article focuses on the use of the term "third sex," citing its adoption by gay right movements in Germany, as of January 2015. It states that German writers Karl Heinrich Ulrichs and Magnus Hirschfeld used the term in their writings and mentions presence of the term in nineteenth century literature like the book "Mademoiselle de Maupin" by French writer Théophile Gautier. It notes the use of the term for homosexuality and cites that term was notes adopted by activists in Great Britain.
