This article focuses on the lack of African American writers in major chain bookstores in the U.S. as of November 15, 2004. Journalist, lecturer and bibliophile A. Peter Bailey faults a white supremacist society for the paucity of books by and about African Americans in non- African American stores. Retailers and publishers often contend that it is futile to market books about African Americans to the white market. For young writers, the task of getting published can be monumental. African American writers encounter special obstacles. Major trade publishers are perceived to be pragmatic, very sales-oriented managers who are not interested in subjects or authors but in sales. White perceptions of what will sell can effectively preclude sales. Racial barriers began to crack and several leading publishing houses hired African American editors. By the mid-1970s, the enchantment of the white press with people of color had died and many argue it has been dead ever since. Some of the most important studies in African American history and literature have been published by university presses. The problem is compounded by the fact that scholarly presses usually have university professors review manuscripts for possible publication.

This article presents an interview with Ken Gloss, proprietor of the Brattle Bookshop in Boston, Massachusetts, about old books and the business of appraising books. Asked about the grounds of the necessity of an appraisal, Gloss says that it is necessary if an individual donates books to charities, institutions, or fundraisers and elects to take the donation as a tax deduction. According to Gloss, an appraisal might be done on the stacks so that rare or valuable books could be removed from circulation and not subjected to the usual handling and possible loss or damage. In terms of appraisal fees and the appraiser's specialties, Gloss recommends that these issues should be discussed before an appraisal begins. He also recommends that when dealing with a donor who expects to take a tax deduction the receiving institution refer any tax questions to the donor's accountant. He adds that a good appraiser will know exactly what paperwork needs to be completed to satisfy the Internal Revenue Service. Gloss encourages libraries to be in the business of collecting, but small libraries and town libraries must ask themselves what they should be collecting, what their focus should be, what their particular strength is, be it town history or local genealogy.
