The article discusses pressures on public higher education from massive budget cuts in 2010. It notes that state systems in addition to the well-publicized California system are suffering. The Nevada system, it states, has been hit hardest because of its nearly 60 percent predicted budget shortfall, the fastest rise in high school graduates in the country, and an already-existing college-pipeline problem. Its chancellor, Daniel Klaich, wrote publicly that the system faces closings of colleges, departments and programs, flight of professors from the state, and students being shut out of classes at community colleges. The article notes that some education policy leaders say public higher education is in peril as a system but it also notes positive action being taken by some schools.
