A Gallup survey conducted May 7-12, 1997 found that 46% of Canadian voters support Jean Chretien's Liberal Party, down from 55% the previous month. While support decreased, the Liberal Party still holds a sizeable lead over Jean Charest's Progressive Conservative Party which is supported by 19% of decided voters. Ontario is the more liberal region with 58% favoring Chretien's party over 22% favoring Charest's party.

A Gallup survey conducted Oct 4-10, 1995 found that 53% of Canadians support Jean Chretien's Liberal Party. The other parties were not mentioned by more than 9% as the best-equipped to solve problems.

A Gallup survey conducted June 1-4, 1995, found that the Progressive Conservative Party, behind the leadership of Mike Harris, would lead at the polls with 42% of the vote in Canada's June elections. The Liberals were named by 35% of decided voters, followed by New Democratic Party, which had the support of 20% of those polled. Of those who said they would vote, however, the Progressive Conservatives are favored over the Liberals by a much slimmer margin, 39% to 38%.

A Gallup poll conducted Jun 1-5, 1993, reveals that Jean Charest would solicit the most votes in a nation-wide election if he were named head of the Progressive Conservative Party. Charest has the support of 44% of the electorate, a 9% increase from Apr 1993. The Liberal Party dropped 3%, to 37% in the same time period. A Charest-led campaign would win 183 seats in the House of Commons, giving the Liberals 91. If Kim Campbell was the candidate, the Progressives would receive only 107 seats, while the Liberals would win 160.

A Gallup survey performed between Jul 24 - Aug 3, 1998, showed that a majority of Canadian voters plan to support the Liberal Party in an upcoming federal election. Well over half of those polled, or 60%, indicated they would vote for the Liberal Party, up from 53% in Jun 1998. Both the Progressive Conservative Party and the Reform Party are tied at a distant second place, with 12% of respondents supporting each party.

The survey indicates a substantial increase for Liberals over the last election, in which support stood at 38% in the months following the election.

Progressive Conservatives and Reform Party politicians share second place, with support for both at 14%. Thirty-percent of respondents are undecided on which party they support.

Results from a Gallup poll of 1003 Canadian adults aged 18 and older, conducted September 18-23, 1997, demonstrate that support for federal Liberals has declined by five points, from 53% to 48%. Liberals are most popular in Ontario, with 59% of respondents from that province claiming they would support Liberals in a federal election. The Reform Party is taking votes away from Liberals in Western Canada, with only six percentage points separating Liberal and Reform candidates.

The support for Tories has correspondingly fallen from 16% to 13%. Other parties have a steady support base. Ontario shows the most support for Liberals with 61% and only 13% support the Reform party. Reform has 46% support in British Columbia compared to 29% for Liberals.

This is compared to the 38% who actually voted for the Liberals. While the Liberals received strong support from each region of the country, the lowest percentage of support was 29% in the Prairies and the highest was 55% in Ontario. The Liberals did not enjoy a significant post-election increase in overall support.

Results of a Gallup Poll conducted the week of December 3-8, 1996 revealed that 54% of Canadian adults would vote for Prime Minister Jean Chretien's Liberal party in a federal election. The Liberals hold a substantial lead in all regions of the country except Quebec. Forty-two percent of Quebec residents would vote for the separatist party, Bloc Quebecois. These results make Bloc Quebecois statistically even with the Liberals in Quebec. In second place overall, the Progressive Conservative Party is supported by approximately 18%.

Results of a Gallup Poll conducted during the week of November 4-9, 1996 revealed that 58% of Canadians surveyed would vote for Prime Minister Jean Chretien's Liberal Party in a federal election. The results are up from a 50% support claim in September. The Liberals are also favored in Quebec with a lower support rating of 47%. Although 40% of Quebec residents would vote for the Liberal Party, 48% would support the Bloc in a national election. Jean Chretien's Liberals lead Conservatives in Atlantic Canada by 64% to 23% and by 62% to 17% in Ontario. In Western Canada, Liberals hold a big lead over the Reform Party.

A Gallup survey conducted Dec 6-11, 1995, found that 46% of Canadians approve of the country's Liberal party government, down from 57% in June, 1994. Of those surveyed, 35% disapproved and 19% had no opinion. These figures are higher, however, than the Conservative government's 1986 and 1990 ratings, also conducted after two years in office. Quebecers disapprove of the Liberals by 52% to 29% approval, and only 28% of francophones support the government. In other provinces, approval ratings are higher, reaching 60% in Ottawa.

The Liberals have a higher approval than disapproval rating in every region of the country other than Quebec, and their approval rating is twice as high as the approval rating given the Progressive Conservative Party when they were in their second year of federal rule in 1986.

The Conservatives would receive 36% of the votes if the election were held on the day of the poll, compared to the Liberals 40%. The next leading vote-getter would be the National Democratic Party, receiving 8% of the vote. The Liberals would have a majority in Ontario, while the Conservatives did well in Quebec.
