Fourteen percent felt government debt was an important issue, followed by national unity at 10%. Prime Minister Jean Chretien was believed by 63% of Canadians to have strong leadership qualities, while Jean Charest received a high rating on leadership issues in Quebec. Former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau was considered the most credible defender of Canadian federalism by 41% of Canadians.
